Motorbike rally to help trust fly
As part of the Summit Rescue Helicopter awareness month, a motorcycle ride will be held this weekend to raise funds for the vital community service. This is the fourth annual heli run organised by Roadsafe Nelson’s Jen Trow. Over the past three years $15,000 has been raised for the helicopter trust. Jen says she wants as many motorcyclists as possible this Saturday. “We don’t care what you drive; we’ll only be doing 50 kilometres an hour the whole way so scooters are more than welcome too.” Bikers are encouraged to meet at the Cambridge St car park in Richmond this Saturday at 10.30am. The ride will then end at Verdict in Nelson where a bbq and charity auction will be held. Cost is $10 per person and tickets can be pre-purRIDE FOR RESCUE: Roadsafe Nelson’s Jen chased at the Stables in Richmond Trow with Stoke’s Derek O’Beirne prepare and the Verdict in Nelson. for this weekend’s Summit Rescue Ride from For more information phone Jen on Richmond into Nelson. NEWS IN BRIEF • Nelson City Council has spent $3.16 million on three central city properties it was announced on Monday. The properties, on the corner of Rutherford St and Achilles Ave, are currently occupied by Hunter Furniture, Nelson Hunting and Fishing, plus 22 leased car parking spaces. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the properties adjoin land already owned by council in Wakatu Square and it’s expected that the income from the leases will mean that there will not be an impact on rates. • The Fire Service is alerting the public not to be concerned if they see smoke coming from the York Valley Landfill area on Market Rd, Bishopdale. Nelson Station Officer Kevin O’Connor is heading up the training for the local crews which will be carried out on various days in May. • Top jazz musician and photojournalist Maggie Gould is set to launch her national photographic exhibition in Nelson this week. Jens Hansen Gold & Silversmith is helping to bring the exhibition Sight & Story to Nelson’s Refinery ArtSpace. The opening will be hosted by photographer Peter Bush (QSM). The Sight & Sound exhibition will run throughout May at the Refinery ArtSpace.

Our readers are the best! Its official, Nelson Weekly readers are the best in town, after helping police catch a wanted sexual predator last week. Nelson police were over-themoon they caught up with Kenneth Lee Woodward as a direct result of his photo appearing in last week’s paper and the quick response by readers. Sergeant Steve Berkett, of Nelson, says Woodward was arrested on Thursday morning after Nelson Weekly readers recognised his photo and then
phoned police with information about his whereabouts. “It’s a great result, we are really happy to get this result; he is a bad man and would have hurt someone if we didn’t catch up with him.” The arrest was made after three separate readers called police with information on Woodward, with one able to lead police right to him. Steve says he would like to thank Weekly readers for their help. “Without Nelson Weekly
readers he could still be roaming the street and a real danger to some people. We will continue to put wanted men in the paper now because it got such a great response.” Woodward was arrested for unlawful sexual connection with a female under 14 years old, meeting a young person following sexual grooming, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, breach of court release conditions and failing to appear in Nelson District Court.

HAPPY CHOPPER: All 7 year-old Ryan Martyn wanted for his birthday was a ride in a helicopter. And on Sunday he finally got his wish at the Summit Rescue open day. Ryan was one of four winners in the dress up competition meaning he got a free ride on a helicopter. He spent three afternoons making his own Summit helicopter outfit. The helicopter took the children past the Rutherford Hotel. “It was really fun. I could see my street,” says Ryan. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

She has made flowers for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston, created pieces for Madonna’s home and the owner of Pepsi’s super-yacht, but now Sara-lee Dabinette is back making flowers for the people of her new home, Nelson. Sara-lee is the new owner of Earthbloom Designer Florist after moving back from earthquake ravaged Christchurch to be with her family and for a change of lifestyle. She forms an award-winning team alongside her sidekick Rosie Burghart. Sara-lee was the winner of People’s Choice New Zealand Florist of the Year in 2009 and 2010 while Rosie is a recipient of New Zealand Junior Florist of the Year. Earthbloom has shifted into a concept store on Waimea Rd.
Her success comes from “putting people’s emotions in to their flowers”, although she says she was “surprised” and “humbled” when she received the accolade for People’s Choice Florist of the Year. Sara-lee has designed flowers for other a-list celebrities including actor Will Smith, Desperate Housewives’ Eva Longoria and co-founder of Oracle Corporation and the fifth richest man in the world Larry Ellison. Some of the weddings she has worked on had budgets of US$100,000 and some unlimited. Rosie worked alongside Sara-lee at Perfect Day floral in Christchurch and just completed a purple-themed wedding for a presenter of BBC, before moving to Nelson when Sara-lee offered her a job. The new-look Earthbloom opens this week.

Stoke man puts 100 years down to ‘lots of veges’ When George Scott was a boy he really did work two hours before he started school each morning and he really did walk kilometres to get there – maybe not uphill both ways – but certainly with no shoes on. And how sweet those memories are. George turned 100 years-old on Sunday, surrounded by family at Kensington Court, where he now lives. He has a vivid memory from growing up in Golden Bay and later working in market gardens and on saw mills in Nelson. He says he has lived a great life and despite being blind and deaf in one ear, feels better now than
when he did at 60, when he retired. “Oh, I feel good, my health is good and I eat right, that’s the key I think.” Well it certainly wasn’t his years of smoking, jokes son Kelvin, who can remember his father driving with one hand and rolling a smoke with the other. George has had diabetes since he was a kid and it has forced him to be strict with his diet, he says he has never has injections because he controls his diabetes with a rigorous diet, including “lots of good veges”. He also believes that has been his secret to long life. George remembers having to stack
a quart of wood for his father’s business each morning before school and quickly having to run the journey to ensure he wasn’t late. He left school at the age of 13 after an outbreak of polio closed the school and when it reopened George had turned 14, the leaving age, and never returned. He began working on saw mills in Golden Bay, where he was also a talented runner and winger for the Collingwood Rugby Club. He was also a great shot and says he never spent much time on Golden Bay’s famous beaches, “we were too busy
Kelvin says he is proud of his dad’s achievement and says he was a hardworking man who “not once in my life raised his voice.” George enjoyed his birthday cake with relatives from around the country on Sunday. He also had an impressive range of birthday, cards including one from the prime minister and Queen Elizabeth II.
working as kids”. George married in Golden Bay but moved to Nelson as an adult and worked at saw mills and for a brief period on a market garden in Hope. He lived in Stoke with his wife and son Kelvin until he retired in 1971. After retirement George says he and his wife loved to surf cast from beaches all along the top of the South Island and did so into their 90’s.

Brides dust off dresses for comp
A ROYAL STOKE WEDDING: Members of the Stoke Senior Citizens at a mock wedding to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Princess Catherine last Friday. They are from left; Marshall Langley, Paul Dolman, Joyce Townsley and Hilary Black. Photo: Andrew Board.
Drag out those dresses ladies – it’s that time of year again. Bride of the Year organiser Heather Harley is on the look out for ladies married between June 1 2009 and June 1 2011. These brides are encouraged to make contact with Heather for an entry form into this year’s competition. As well as getting the chance to wear your wedding dress again, Heather says the event is a great fundraiser for a local organisation. “Every single cent raised on the night goes directly to Hospice,” says Heather. Due to the economic climate last year, Heather says it wasn’t feasible to run the event in 2010, which is why brides over two years are more than welcome to enter. The event will take place at the Hope Community Church hall on Ranzau Rd West on June 11. Doors will open at 6.45pm and following this will be a silent auction including unsold works
from a recent Hospice art auction. The show will then start at 7.45pm. Heather says she is still on the look out for businesses to donate prizes and every bride gets a prize for entering. “It’ll be a lovely evening so I welcome any brides to come forward and register so we can raise some money for Hospice, they could do with our help,” she says. The evening will also provide a great excuse for people in the area to dress up and have a night out. The evening’s four judges are all from out of town to make the contest fair, including chief judge Robyn Cliffe from Robyn Cliffe Couturiere in Christchurch. Heather says the event is always a lot of work but being able to raise money for such a worthy cause makes it worthwhile. “The sponsors we have already have made things easier.” For more information, contact Heather on 5451644 or heather.harley@xtra.co.nz.

Errol Millar, Nelson. Calling crossword lovers It is with surprise I find the Nelson Weekly does not include a crossword of any sort, let alone a locally flavoured Cryptic Crossword. I think I might be able to correct this omission with the assistance of the Weekly and a few of our community members. I am hoping to create a group of 15-20 people who, like myself, enjoy solving Cryptic Crosswords, but have never contemplated crossword compilation. The appeal of compiling just a few (3-4) clues, rather than an entire grid (25-30), is strong in those of us solvers who at times feel that we could improve some clues, or at least have fun attempting compilation of only a few. The details of how a continuous weekly supply of crosswords can be supplied to the Weekly using the local community, are too numerous to go into here. So, at this stage I’m just interested in discovering how many Nelsonians would be keen to join me and a few others in this novel crossword creation idea. Those who are, need only email me at, bartysss@gmail.com, or text or phone on 027 681 9849.

TO THE EDITOR
Council must be accountable The High Court ruling that the Nelson City Council has failed to conduct adequate consultation over the proposed Montgomery Square upgrade is not unexpected. This Council continually treats its community and ratepayers with contempt and thinks it can do what it likes irrespective of statutory requirements. Someone must be held accountable for this latest fiasco. Once again the ratepayers will pick up the tab for Council incompetence and pay the legal costs for something that should never have been allowed to happen. The Rutherford Park proposal is another example of Councils abuse of the system. NO facts just spin and more spin. Thanks to the TDC and Andrew Talley for exposing this sham. Hopefully common sense will prevail. I would hate to see the RWC overshadowed by headlines like “Council sacked - Commissioner appointed”.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• A busy week for the Port as we catch up after the Easter break. After delivery of cars, the car carrier departed with processed timber and since a second car carrier arrived discharged and left. • Twenty one movements of large fishing vessels into, around, or out of the port occurred in the past week. Welcome back to the Russian fleet for their month layup and maintenance. Six container vessels came through keeping the stevedores very busy. A fruit ship and the Spirit of New Zealand at the end of her three day voyage round off a very active time. • Many thanks to all the canoeists, kayakers and small power boats that behaved themselves over Easter. It was good to see there were no foolhardy people challenging the elements. • Speaking of challenging, I had the privilege of piloting one of the big ships out one dark night and it was the pilot boat that had to light up a yacht coming through the cut as the ship approached. The yacht came as a surprise and I am grateful to the skipper and crew of the pilot boat for pointing out the danger. I am sure that yacht has the appropriate lights to display or else he should not be out after dark at all. What is disappointing is the response from the yacht skipper when assisted by the pilot boat. After sunset it is compulsory to display the correct lighting for your vessel. It is foolish not to. If in doubt - don’t go out

Libraries a popular place to be as thousands pour through doors Andrew Board Nelson libraries are experiencing a record number of visitors, with more than 2000 people walking through the doors of the Elma Turner Library last Tuesday alone. And the increase is certainly not a onetime-thing with an average of 1541 more people walking through the door of the Elma Turner Library each month compared to last year. In March just fewer than 40,000 people used the central Nelson library, up 10 percent on the year before. Despite the large increase of users, staff numbers have not changed in the past two years and Sarah says that is testament to the staff working more efficiently, while still keeping a high standard of customer service. specification. Adam says Milestone Homes has listened to the comments of their clients over the past year and tried to create something a bit different and tick all of the boxes for people looking to build a new home. “Our focus over the last three years has been on providing exceptional value homes for people and with this brand new design we are continuing to do that. “Our previous showhome was the most popular house plan in Nelson throughout the period that it was open and we think this home will be even more popular. In fact, we have already sold five of the new showhome plans already. The comments from people who have already looked through the home have been excellent, with one couple even choosing the same colour scheme’s for the inside and outside of their new home.” Not only the house plan is new
though, with a brand new, innovative specification being used both inside and outside the home. The exterior is 100% maintenance free with a combination of Monier clay bricks and pre-finished weatherboards. When asked what drove this decision Adam says everyone leads busy lives and everyone likes to spend their free time doing things that they enjoy. “When you build a new home you shouldn’t have to worry about re-painting. This also adds value to your investment as you own a maintenance free property. “The combination of the cladding is also unique and makes quite a feature of the front of the home as we wanted the new showhome to be unique and encourage people to do something a bit different. However if this look isn’t for you we have also created two alternative front facades so you could have the same floor plan but the house would look totally different. Two clients have already

taken advantage of this and with the positive feedback we are starting to introduce this multiple facade option on our new plans.” Milestone Homes have a refreshing approach when it comes to the specification of the showhome, as they ensure that everything you see is standard. This allows people to see exactly what they will be getting and allows them to choose if they would like to change something. “People love the fact that everything they see and touch is what they will be getting in their home” says Adam. Having the standard specification on display also allows Milestone Homes to quantify and price
every single house plan. When you ask for a price it is exactly that - you could sign a fixed price contract based on that price and be confident that is all it will cost you. Adam is clearly passionate about the high standards that Milestone Homes work to, but that isn’t just in the house but also the service. “The thing everybody sees is the quality of the finish and we pride ourselves on using the best builders and sub-contractors in Nelson. We use the same builders and sub-contractors as the ‘most awarded’ Jennian Homes so clients can be confident they are getting a home of the highest quality. A fresh start is the way forward for Busy Bees Early Childhood centre with a new sole owner at the helm and plenty of teaching experience making Busy Bees an exciting, fun and busy little centre. Jill Taylor is now the sole business owner of The Child Care Company Ltd, which operates Busy Bees in the Wood. Fritha Snape has joined the team as the new head teacher. Fritha is well known within Early Childhood Education circles in the Nelson region. She is full of enthusiasm, with a passion for working with children and their families. Recently the centre has been
promoting healthy choices for the children after discussions at a staff meeting. This has lead to the idea of a fresh start for the centre and the children. The children are learning about healthy choices in what they eat and how they exercise. Play and learning is promoted through the use of the Sport Tasman equipment available to ECE centre’s, through monthly visits to the gym, through regular walking outings from the centre and through the children being provided with a stimulating, challenging and changing outdoor play environment. “We are teaching children to be aware of what
they have in their lunch boxes so that they can make healthy food choices. Resources from the Ministry of Health (5 + a day) provide valuable learning activities and with help from whanau, the children are quick to learn,” says Jill. Activities have included making a food pyramid with magazine cut outs, preparing our garden for some winter vegetables and making fresh juice and fruit kebabs. The centre hase had some fruit and veges donated by a parent to support our fresh start. Thanks to Faace. Busy Bees is a mixed age centre with children from birth to

Although Nelson was declared a city in 1858, it was another 16 years before it had a city council. In its early years the town was administered by a Board of Works and this body remained in existence till 1874 when the first city council was established. It wasn’t elected, the Board of Works members became the council overnight. They then selected one of their own, Joseph Field Dodson, as Mayor. Dodson, businessman and brewer, disagreed with
the council over the city’s funding system, and resigned his position a year later. However he returned to the post for a further four-year term in 1877. It wasn’t quite unexpected, but Nayland College received a fairly rude welcome from its cross-town rivals Nelson College, in its first ever Press Cup rugby game on Saturday. Former champions Nelson College ran riot clocking up 94 points to Nayland’s solidary penalty kick in the first match of the 2011 Press Cup competition – which includes the top secondary school teams from Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson. Despite Nayland holding off the rugby powerhouse in the opening ten minutes, thanks to some strong work in the forwards by captain Connor Riley, Fijian import Misaele Tabua and grafting lock Hassan Rayan, it didn’t take long for the flood gates to open. Nelson College star Mitchell Drummond scored a game high 34 points against his former school, scoring two tries and banging over 12 conversions at an impressive 86 percent conversion rate. While electric fullback Mitch Hunt and hulking winger Kerehama Barrett flourished in the open space created by missed tackles. The Nayland squad will get to know the tackle bags a lot more closely in training this week as they fell off tackle after tackle, giving flankers Steven Soper and Nathan Baxter plenty of space to run the ball and free up their outsiders, although both forwards RUNNING RIOT: Nelson College’s blindside flanker Nathan Baxter tears past the had enough pace to finish themselves. The Tim Miller Plumbing Nelson Indoor Invitational is taking place at Action Indoor Centre in Richmond from 3pm on Saturday. Organiser Jon Routhan says he is hoping the tournament will raise the profile of indoor cricket around the region. “It’s also an opportunity to see a really good level of sport.” There will be three teams from Nelson, two teams from Christchurch and one team from Blenheim vying for the $500 first place prize money put up by local company Tim Miller Plumbing. The tournament starts at 3pm on Saturday and will run all day on Sunday. Smashing season ends on high Phillip Rollo It has been arguably his greatest year on the track but Brett Nicholl’s trophy cabinet finally received some silverware for 2011. The 48N super-stock driver won the Easter Championship and reclaimed his Winstanley Cup last weekend, making him a very happy man heading in to the five month offseason. “It was one of the better seasons we’ve had actually,” he says. A rain-affected Easter Champs was won by Brett, who claimed the championship for the first time in his career. Earlier in the season he finished sixth place at the New Zealand Super-Stock Championships in Rotorua and finished second place at the South Island Championships. Brett says putting in the hard yards, late nights working on the car, a reliable pit crew and good sponsors behind him were the difference in his top season. With Brendan Higgins retiring, Brett has made it clear he would like to see 1NZ Dale Ewers remain in the sport despite rumours of joining Brendan and calling it a day.
IF YOU CAN’T BEAT ‘EM... TACKLE ‘EM: FC Nelson United defender Sam Miller makes sure Richmond Athletic winger Sam Mason-Smith doesn’t get around him in his side’s 5-1 loss to the high-flying Richmond at Jubilee Park on Saturday. FC Nelson United scored its sole goal from the penalty spot after an illegal tackle in the box by Richmond defender Ant Sonneman. Despite the large score line, it is actually the closest any team has got to Richmond this season. FC Nelson United are fourth on the Nelson Pine Industries first division table and are set to play the youthful AMI Nelson Suburbs 1st XI at Saxton Field this Saturday. Photo: Andrew Board.
“With 1NZ on the body, he’s going to have to come out and defend it again next year. We need him in for the [Nelson] Tigers, he’s awesome at team’s races and he’s a good guy,” says Brett. “It’s good having good cars at home so you know if you’re on the pace or not. With Brendan Higgins retiring, if we lose Dale it will be a bit unfortunate. Hopefully he stays around for another few seasons.” But while he hopes for Dale to stick around, he will again be his number one rival as he looks to take the 1NZ title. “It’s what we’re here for.” He has a “few little things” up his sleeve for next season, but the off-season will be spent fine-tuning the car and making sure he has the consistency to better his top year. Brett wants to say a special thanks to his mum Sue and dad Phill, partner Kirsty, all his pit crew and sponsors; Edridge Contracting, Super Charge Batteries, Burnsy’s Straight and Paint, Super Liqour, TNT, Nicholls Auto Centre, Castrol Edge, Sam Taylor Builders, Bay Cars and Discover NZ Motorhomes.

Club day packs out Stoke clubrooms
BLOOD, SWEAT AND GUTS: Accessman Stoke lock Jarrod Aberhart attempts to burrow through the tackle of Stables Waimea Old Boys winger Corey McClelland. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Stoke held its club day at Greenmeadows on Saturday in perfect conditions, with the Women’s team taking on Central at Ngawhatu. The senior teams had two losses, a win and a draw, not the perfect result, but a good day was enjoyed by all. The clubrooms was abuzz after the games with a great turnout from supporters, sponsors and players. We would especially like to thank the following people for making our day a success: all our loyal sponsors, our team’s supporters, the
coaches and managers, the referees and ball boys, the Women’s team for preparing the food for the spit, Murray Cederman for providing the kune kune pig and spit and cooking it to perfection, Emmzy for another outstanding effort in the kitchen, and those who helped him, especially Denise, the opposition teams, Waimea, Wanderers, Rangers and Central Women. – Jo Maclean, Stoke Rugby Club co-ordinator.
Women win first up, Reds draw The Women played their eagerly anticipated season opener against Central on Saturday. The team has been training hard since January and the players were keen to finally pull their boots on. After the initial rustiness, the girls settled into their work with Welsh import Gemma Hallett showing excellent skills at number eight. Holly Fry also worked hard
at the breakdown to provide valuable ball to the backline, where first five-eighth Alicia Ford impressed in her debut for the club. Stoke proved too strong for Central in the end, and won 47-7. Meanwhile the division three men’s side, the Stoke Reds, drew 22 each with the recentlydemoted Rangers.
Div 2 falls just short to Wanderers
Stoke will be kicking themselves after poor kicking from the tee made a courageous comeback a bridge too far against Waimea Old Boys. Accesman Stoke fell short against Stables Waimea Old Boys for the second time this season, this time going down 28-20 in an entertaining match at Greenmeadows on Saturday. Shaun Begg’s radar faulted throughout the game while opposition fullback Andrew Leatham was lethal, landing penalties from all over the pitch. Stoke scored three tries to Waimea’s one which made the loss hard to bear for the home side. The midfield pairing of Jack Umaga and Sione Holani again showed brilliance in attack and the forwards toiled strongly against a larger pack. Stu Tunnicliff showed his experience and skill with strong defence. Young hooker Nick Max and Lofi Ula both scored late tries to bring the scores close. But missed kicks mean’t missed opportunities for the defending champions.
Coming off a couple of good wins, the Stoke side were beaten by 34-18 by Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers in very balmy conditions on Saturday at Greenmeadows. Stoke started the game slowly and were noticeably quiet on the field, which Wanderers took advantage of and scored a couple of tries before Stoke got into the game. Their three unconverted tries were scored by forwards Sami Sami, Lindsay McPhillips and Martyn Young, with Chad Lowrie kicking another monster 50m penalty to add to their points. Player of the day went to Motoi Yokoyama Stoke division two halfback Motoi Yokoyama scrambles to clear who had a strong game at the ball in his sides loss to Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers at halfback.
