Local teen off to Harvard

Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States and consistently ranks as the hardest Ivy League to gain entry to, so when ex-Motueka High School student Moeka Koyama learned her application was successful she was left “shaking”.

With an acceptance rate of just 3.4%, Harvard is renowned for its devotion to excellence in teaching, learning, and research, and to developing leaders who make a difference globally.

“Hopefully my acceptance will inspire a few students and show that even students from a rural background can make it to top institutions without any academic consulting,” says Moeka.

With a desire to experience a more balanced education without having to specialise too early, Moeka applied to a few universities in the United States and was left pleasantly surprised after being

accepted into Harvard, Stanford, Brown and Northwestern Universities.

Now committed to Harvard, Moeka says it was a tough choice.

“They’re all top calibre universities so it was not a situation I expected to find myself in.”

Keen to major in History, Moeka would like to embark on a career in education, particularly teaching ‘liberal arts’.

“I think it’s really important to teach Liberal Arts, it lends itself to skills we all need such as critical thinking.”

Moeka credits Motueka High School’s “great” history teacher, Sharon Beuke for inspiring her love of history and says the School’s principal John Prestidge, deputy principal Andrew Dell and her dean Sarah Matheson were instrumental in aiding her application.

“It sounds cliché but I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support from Motueka High School.”

Heading to the United States in August, Moeka will be joined by three fellow New Zealanders at the prestigious university.

“I don’t think it’ll feel real until I’m walking the campus.”

With excellent diversity, Moeka says she’s expecting it to be “really competitive

with a lot of exchange of ideas”.

A keen rugby referee, Moeka is looking to continue that pastime and hoping to referee the Harvard women’s rugby team.

Another of her passions, music, will also play a part with tutoring in the wider Boston area on the cards.

“Music is so empowering, I really believe that.”

A self-confessed history buff, Moeka is excited at the potential of exploring places she’s learned about previously.

“I’m just really thrilled that I have this opportunity and am excited to make the most of it.”

Kono NZ announces sale of seafood assets to Talley’s Ltd

Greenshell™ Mussels, we were looking at how to meet that demand through our stateof-the-art Blenheimbased mussel plant, which can have up to 450 staff working there on four product lines.

“With capacity at our mussel facilities we are thrilled this deal with Kono will enable us to employ hundreds of skilled local people, keeping them in our region. We have created more than 250 roles for Kono seafood staff. As well as Blenheim, we also have opportunities for

people to work with us in Havelock, Motueka and Golden Bay, and potentially in other parts of our food business as well.”

Kono and Talley’s will be working together to ensure continuity for people, suppliers and customers throughout the sale process and beyond.

The sale of Kono Seafood does not impact other Kono businesses. Kono Horticulture, Hop Federation and Tohu wines continue to operate as usual.

Sale ensures retention of jobs within the region and realisation of commercial value of seafood assets.

Food and beverage company Kono NZ, an associated business of Wakatu Incorporation, has announced the asset sale of its Marlborough-based seafood business, Kono Seafood, to Talley’s Ltd.

Kono Seafood produces and exports

Kono New Zealand Greenshell™ Mussels and employs around 300 staff across its three New Zealand sites in Blenheim, Golden Bay, and Havelock.

Securing employment opportunities for affected staff beyond the sale was a key factor in the Wakatu approach, and Kono NZ Chief Operating Officer Andy Wotton said the organisation was working closely with Talley’s to ensure employees were offered roles.

“We’re really pleased that Talley’s will take on the overwhelming majority of our valued staff and

that the roles will stay within the region. Talley’s is a leading player in the industry and they’re firmly committed to this area and its long-term development.”

Forecast for completion on 22 May this year, the sale of the seafood assets forms part of a wider strategic reset for Wakatu, to ensure its portfolio of businesses align more closely with its 500-year vision Te Pae Tawhiti and put Wakatu in a strong position for the future.

“Our core purpose is inter-generational – to protect and enhance our taonga, for the benefit of current and future generations. As part of that goal, the different parts of our business will change and evolve over time, but our purpose remains the same. To care for and ensure the protection of our whenua through the generations, and to develop the capability of our whanau – from both a cultural and commercial perspective.

“Not only does the timing of this sale allow us to put our people in

the position to secure ongoing employment with a well-known and experienced operator in the region, but we are also able to realise the value of our significant seafood asset, positioning us well for the future.”

Talley’s CEO Tony Hazlett says he is pleased to welcome the Kono team into Talley’s, recognising the commitment both organisations have to the region.

Tony says, “With national and global demand for

Documentary uncovers forgotten

West Coast photographer

Two local film makers are shining a light on an unsung West Coast photographer in a documentary about to hit screens across New Zealand.

‘Jos – the forgotten photographer who saved a town’ was made by Riwaka local Robyn Janes and Nelson cinematographer Dave Kwant. It tells the story of miner and photographer Jos Divis who spent much of his life photographing life, above and below ground, in the abandoned ghost town of Waiuta.

Writer Robyn Janes, who is also a director with iconic New Zealand television show Country Calendar, says the pair came across Jos Divis’ photographs when working on a documentary called Whispers of Gold back in 2020.

“We realised Jos Divis’ photographs had kept Waiuta alive despite it being abandoned in the 1950s with over a billion dollars worth of gold still left underground. We were amazed Jos had never really got any recognition and was missing from histories of New Zealand photography and wanted to right that wrong.”

Some call Jos Divis the ‘inventor of the selfie’ as he featured in nearly half of his images, something that was unusual during the early 1900’s. He was a street photographer who pioneered techniques to capture images of ordinary people and their work-

ing lives. Dave Kwant, who is the director of photography at Nelson based creative studio SuperNatural says Jos was a man ahead of his time.

“He was incredibly proficient when it came to lighting things underground using gunpowder and magnesium so he captured mining life in incredible detail. As well as being a really accomplished photographer he was literally a modern day influencer. I think if he was around today he’d be a You Tuber – back in the 1900s he just didn’t have an audience.”

The documentary follows the story of Jos’ life and work, including a dark period when he was injured in a mining accident, and interned as a prisoner of war. It features geologist and biographer Simon Nathan who first brought Jos Divis and his work to prominence. Wet plate photographer Brian Scadden, reenacts some of Jos Divis’ most iconic photos. The documentary includes exerts from letters written by Divis and interviews with Veronika Schmidtova, a member of the Divis family in the Czech Republic, who for many years thought him dead.

Jos Divis’ images of Waiuta and other mining towns provide a unique record of life at the time of the depression and have recently been digitised as part of the National Library of New Zealand’s photographic collec-

tion. He was one of Waiuta’s last inhabitants and his photographs of the community and everyday life in the long abandoned ‘ghost town’ are a major reason why it has recently been given Tohu Whenua status and designated a Category 1 historic site by Heritage New Zealand.

Jos – the forgotten photographer who saved a town plays at the Gecko Theatre in Motueka from May 4 with a Q & A session with Robyn Janes after the 5pm screening on Saturday 6 May. Details can be found on www.jos-film.com

Vandals attack property in Sanderlane Drive

Neighbours on either side of a walkway in Sanderlane Drive, Motueka woke on Sunday, 23 April morning to find their fences had been daubed with pink graffiti and a panel had been kicked in.

‘Our corrugated steel fences are regu-

larly kicked and dented by vandals but the graffiti is a new addition to the damage,” says Judy Fisher, one of the property owners. ‘We’d like to know what can be done to protect our property which borders a council owned public right of way.”

Dear Editor, Restarting the live exports of cattle?

On 19th April Christopher Luxon, National Party leader, announced that his party would restart the live exports of cattle with strict animal welfare rules as part of its agricultural policy for the next election. The Government has banned this export from 30 April 2023.

Think again Mr Luxon and Maureen Pugh who has spoken of her support of export of livestock by shipping.

Many factors point to the Government’s wise decision to end this practice.

Firstly in the vessels used to carry livestock do not have reputable safety records. Companies exporting livestock use Flag of Convenience (F.O.C.) vessels which are mainly registered in

ing SoulUtionz Sports Trust, she is not a member of the Motueka 2030 committee.

the Middle East or in countries like Panama. These vessels avoid rigorous ship surveys which focus on the safety of the ship for both crew and livestock. The Manchester Guardian has reported that ships carrying livestock have the worst safety records of all commercial shipping. Do not forget the loss of 6000 cattle, and 41 crew, one of whom was a New Zealander, on 3rd October 2022. The NZ public is still waiting to see the full report of that tragedy.

Secondly many of the companies offering the service of shipping of livestock are not financially viable. Currently there are two livestock vessels tied up in port, one in Australia and the other in Singapore as the companies have been declared bankrupt. The crews have not been paid.

Thirdly, have our

farmers who support the export of our prime breeding cattle for financial gain thought about what would happen to our export of dairy produce to China in future decades? China plans for selfsufficiency in its food supplies. In the future that country will not need to import our milk powder or other dairy products. Look at what China has done to our kiwifruit industry.

Finally Damian O’Connor, our Ministry of Agriculture has enacted the policy of cessation of our export of livestock to enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a trading nation with ethical standards. We should be proud of this legislation.

Think again Mr Luxon and Maureen Pugh. Do you really know enough about livestock shipping?

Extension granted for fund designed to ensure tamariki and rangatahi Maori in Te Waipounamu have access to sport and recreation

A pilot project to help remove financial barriers to participation in sport and recreation for tamariki and rangatahi Mãori in the South Island has been extended.

Te Kîwai was launched in 2021 to support tamariki and rangatahi Mãori aged 5 – 18 years who were missing out on activities due to financial hardship. Hundreds of children and teens have benefited from the one-off $300 payment to help cover items like annual subs, club uniforms, new boots, gear, or transport.

Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa and the Whãnau Commissioning Agency for the South Island, Te Pútahitanga o Te Waipounamu, have now agreed to continue the grassroots Te Kîwai fund for the coming year.

Te Pútahitanga o Te Waipounamu

Pouãrahi, Ivy Harper, said the decision by Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa to extend the Te Kîwai partnership would make a difference for hundreds of whãnau.

“The need has not changed and when budgets are tight, food comes before children’s activities, so we are really pleased that this partnership has been able to continue,” says Ivy.

“Enabling tamariki and rangatahi to be able to take part not just in sports, but in whatever recreational or cultural pursuit works for them, is not just about now, or the next season or the next tournament, but it extends to encouraging healthy habits for life and so it is important that tamariki and rangatahi are not locked out of physical activity simply

because of financial barriers.”

Te Pútahitanga o Te Waipounamu is one of 12 organisations that Sport NZ currently invests in through He Oranga Poutama, an initiative created to develop, promote and implement physical activity that is culturally appropriate to Mãori.

Sport NZ Acting Group ManagerKãhui Rautaki Mãori, Tanya Wilson, says Te Kîwai is another great opportunity for Sport NZ and Te Pútahitanga o Te Waipounamu to continue to work together to invest directly into wellbeing outcomes for tamariki and rangatahi.

“It is particularly significant that Te Kiwai includes investment into traditional Mãori activities like taonga tãkaro and kapa

haka.

“These activities encourage tamariki and rangatahi to stay active, while also expressing their culture and heritage and contributing to taha tinana and taha wairua.

“Research shows that the most enduring habits are built in childhood and being active as tamariki is key to staying active as an adult.”

Ivy says Te Pútahitanga o Te Waipounamu was excited to be able to continue to help whãnau ensure their young ones are staying active.

“We are thrilled to be able to respond to the call from whãnau to support their tamariki and mokopuna to be able to engage in getting active, and we welcome and encourage whãnau Mãori to apply.”

Friends of Flora seeking new volunteers

Friends of Flora (FOF) are a community volunteer group working in partnership with the Department of Conservation (DOC). We are dedicated to restoring the flora and fauna in the Wharepapa/Mt Arthur area of the Kahurangi national park.

Hopefully, many of you have seen our newspaper stories or Facebook posts about the kea chicks monitored in the Flora for the last few years.

But did you know we do so much more!

We have been conducting predator control in the Flora since 2001 and with traps spread over 10,000 hectares, we have been able to re-introduce Whio (blue duck) & Roroa (great spotted kiwi) into the area.

But trapping is no use without monitoring the outcomes. For the past 18 years we have been monitoring the fortunes of all our favourite birds in the area including, robin, rifleman, kaka, kiwi, long tailed cuck-

oo etc using formal bird counts, acoustic recorders, and nest cams. We also monitor in the alpine and forest areas by putting out tracking tunnels and seeing what has travelled through them by identifying their footprints. If you are interested in plants, we do that too, from monitoring the amazing mistletoe high up in the trees to helping DOC search for alpine clematis hanging out on the side of a 1400

New bus services for TDC

The Tasman District Council (TDC) are getting a range of new bus services on new routes later this year. This will now start in August rather than July due to a delay in the arrival of the new electric buses caused by

delays at international ports.

The new bus service, made possible by a Waka Kotahi subsidy, will not only be greener but there will also be more buses going to more places. The new service will include new routes

from Motueka and Wakefield and an airport service.

In preparation for these new routes, they need to construct new bus shelters and seats throughout the District, as well as create space for the larger 14-metre sin-

gle-deck bus. As part of these new routes, the buses will travel both ways along Wensley Road. There will also be changes on Queen Street outside TDC’s main building where they will be creating new bus stops.

“Our effort to support kids and whanau to reach their potential is to help parents see where they need to reframe their approach, learn new skills or get a better understanding of what kids are capable of at each age and stage.”

Valuing and celebrating diversity they are based within the Motueka Family Service Centre, a onestop-shop for people seeking support, and tucked away on Talbot Street, behind Parklands School.

The first gap the Tasman District Council is filling is with a new shared pathway at Pohara. They are building this from Tennyson Street along the edge of the Pohara Top 10 Holiday Park to the end of the Pohara Beach Reserve.

Construction has begun and should be finished by the middle

of the year.

The next missing link they plan to fill is between the two existing footpaths on Motupipi Street, through to the intersection at Abel Tasman Drive. The new shared aggregate path will be 2.5 metres wide with a pedestrian crossing near number 83 Motupipi Street and

will improve cycling and pedestrian safety along this popular route. It’s hoped this project will be ready to be used early next year.

Funding for these shared pathway projects has come from the government’s $5.64 million to help the wider community and iwi outcomes

through tranche one of the Three Waters Better Off Support Package.

This money is part of a $22.55 million total allocation to the Council and the Tasman community in recognition of the significant transfer of responsibility for three waters service delivery.

Three games of senior rugby at Sportspark this Saturday

There will be two trophies on the line when the Kahurangi Men’s Division One team takes on Marist this coming Saturday, 6 May at Sportspark Motueka, with kickoff scheduled for 3pm. The John Goodman Trophy is up for grabs, which Kahurangi has successfully defended by remaining unbeaten in 13 home fixtures since it won that trophy from Central in the first round of the 2021 season. The game is also effectively a final for the Nelson Bays SubUnion competition, although Kahurangi will need to secure a bonus-point victory and also ensure Marist do not gain a losing bonus-point to regain that trophy from Marist, the current holders. Unbeaten this season, Marist currently sit atop of the Nelson SubUnion table with 15 points while Kahurangi sit in second spot on 11 points having beaten Waimea Old Boys and Nelson but with a loss to Stoke in their round-

two match on the 15th of April.

Kahurangi has struggled to settle into its patterns so far this season, something that shouldn’t come as a surprise when you consider 12 players have made their debuts for the team this year. After a solid win over Waimea Old Boys in round one, 40-19, the 17-22 loss against Stoke made for frustrating viewing. The Hawks were the architects of their own demise, conceding far too many penalties, and squandering too many clear scoring opportunities, to win the match. The win over Nelson on April 22nd was a comfortable 39-19 margin in the end, although Nelson responded immediately after the Hawks scored each of their first three tries. However, in the second half Kahurangi scored a further three tries at the same time as they improved their defensive systems to keep Nelson scoreless and take the bonus-point win.

The Div 1 Stuff Tasman Trophy

begins on Saturday, 13 May with Kahurangi hosting Stoke this time, back at Sportspark Motueka. Reinforcements are due to arrive for the Hawks with a number of key players, including Luca Inch, Tim Sail, and Hunter Leppien to name a few, scheduled to become available for the Tasman Trophy stage of the season.

The Kahurangi Women’s team play Marlborough’s Wairau Wahine on Saturday

at 1:15pm, also at Sportspark Motueka. Kahurangi remain unbeaten after the three rounds of the Senior Women’s Stuff Tasman Trophy having beaten Wairau Wahine, Marist and Waimea to sit at the top of the table. This has been a remarkable turnaround for Kahurangi after struggling in their maiden season, something that must be incredibly satisfying to new coaches Weesang Paaka and Bevan

Thomas.

The Kahurangi U15s celebrated their maiden fixture with a 33-19 win, playing away to Takaka last Saturday. The U17s also showed plenty of promise in their preseason mini-tournament at Jubilee Park on Saturday losing narrowly to Nelson College 12-0 before getting their very first W against Waimea Old Boys 22-5. The Riwaka Men’s Division Two team fought out a 15-all

draw against Waimea

Old Boys on Saturday at Cook’s Reserve in a game with all of the frustrating hallmarks of a typical early season fixture.

Riwaka had more than enough opportunities to snatch the victory only for the players who had created clean linebreaks, and with support players to either side, opting to take contact with Waimea’s final defender rather than throwing the pass to

their unmarked team mates. Riwaka play away to Murchison this Saturday with kickoff at 1.15pm.

The Huia Senior Div 2 team play Wanderers in its first competition game of the season at Sportspark Motueka at 1.15pm.

The Kahurangi U15s take on Waimea Old Bays at Jubilee Park at 11:15am while the U17s play Nelson College Oxford at Broads with kickoff at 11.30am.

money you have to feel that you’re employing someone reliable and someone you can communicate with.

Tradesmen feel the same way about homeowners as they too invest both time and money when they’re undertaking a job, they don’t want to risk losing valuable business. Managing expectations is therefore key for both parties.

Give your tradie a call or meet them in person and get a feel for their character. If you have an extensive project, you’ll meet and deal with the tradesmen for many months to come, so make sure you have a good gut feeling.

Some of the best people to engage are our local tradies, here are a few reasons why:

• When they live locally, a tradesman can get to you sooner to quote on a job.

• They will also be able to get to you quickly in the case of an emergency, such as a burst pipe or electrical failure.

• When you hire someone locally they know the area which can come in handy when it comes to local council regulations.

• You can drive around and see examples of local work they have carried out.

• Using a local business is also a good way of getting to know more people in your community.

• Everyone knows you can’t beat word of mouth, and good news travels fast in local communities.

The importance of communication and trust

It’s essential that you feel trust when you hire a tradesman. When you’re parting with (potentially) a lot of

When you hire a tradesman make sure they’re registered. Don’t be afraid to ask to see their certificate/ registered number, they would have worked hard to gain their certification and will be only too happy to show you.

Is your tradie covered by insurance? This is important should there be an unforeseen situation.

Be clear and up front about budgets, start/finish dates and expectations. For instance, who will be supplying material? You or the tradesperson? To avoid confusion or argument about who said what, ask for a written quote and maintain communication with your tradie throughout the work. A written detailed description of the work to be carried out can also help.

Hiring the right tradie for your home is important, but a professional relationship works both ways. To help keep the experience a positive one, check out these tips:

Establish a professional rapport

From the get-go make sure the lines of communication are well and truly open. It’s important to express your expectations and requirements clearly while working together to establish a plan. If there is something you are unsure about, honesty is the best policy.

Make their job easier

Clear the area that is to be worked on from any obstacles or breakable items. Do make sure your house is easily accessible, including making room for parking. Remember to keep you pets away from the work area.

Offer a spot for lunch and breaks

If your tradespeople will be spending the entire day working at your house, they will more than likely have brought their lunch. Let them know where they can set up. It’s also helpful and thoughtful to set aside a space outside with seating and a table they can be used for their well-deserved breaks.

Check-in for updates

Depending on the size of the job, it’s important to check in every couple of days and see how things are going. This includes asking your tradie if they need anything.

Don’t hover

There’s a fine line between being friendly and getting in the way. Keep your conversations short and let them get on with the job.

Show your appreciation

Offering tea, coffee or a plate of biscuits is a simple gesture to show your appreciation.

At the end of the job, if you are happy with the work, make sure you take the time to give them a reference or a review online.

Be reasonable

Things go wrong and sometimes it’s out of your tradie’s hands. Although frustrating, stay calm and work together to help solve the problem.

Supporting local tradespeople isn’t only about dollars, it’s also about community. Often it’s our small local businesses that provide a generous amount of community support to local schools, sports teams and events. By supporting local tradespeople you may well also be supporting a local sports team, making it a double win for

our community. Spending your money locally grows a community and generates a shared sense of wellbeing that is impossible to ignore. Whether you prefer to do it yourself or engage a local tradie, do your best to keep it local, and make an informed, thoughtful approach when deciding where to spend your hard-earned pay. Spend with wellbeing in mind, not just the lowest price. You, your neighbours, and your community will benefit. Finally, a couple of things to be aware of • on’t use tradespeople who want to do cash jobs. While you may save a small amount, this is not only

illegal, but you have limited recourse in the event something goes wrong.

• tradesperson who is willing to break one law is likely to be willing to break others.

• void the fast talking tradesperson who approaches you at your home claiming to be ‘in your area’.

• The standard trick involves offering to do a small job (like repair tiles), before “discovering” a larger job is critical (like a new roof is required).

Are you interested in becoming a tradie?

There are numerous benefits for those who wish to start a career in the trades. It’s a wonderful occupation for those who enjoy working with their hands, flexible hours, job security and good wages.

More and more women are joining the trades and it’s heart-warming to see them employed as apprentice builders, drain layers, plumbers and electricians. The support of their male counterparts within the sector is commendable in encouraging women to learn such skills. Being a tradie does require hard work, physical labour and dedication but the benefits can be immense and absolutely worthwhile.

Job satisfaction

When you talk to tradespeople, one of the things they all talk about is the real sense of satisfaction they get from finishing a job. It’s not uncommon to drive around an area or a neighbourhood and see the sites you’ve had a hand at creating, infrastructures you helped build and pieces you’ve crafted. It could be a house, landscaping, a business, an item of machinery or something else – you know you’ve done a good job and have others appreciate and enjoy.

Work flexibility

Once a tradesperson masters their trade and gets their qualification, they can essentially pick their own projects

Architectural

and be their own boss. Many tradespeople end up working for themselves and build a business which in turn supports our local community

Job Security

As one of the most in-demand services in New Zealand, tradespeople are among the top when it comes to in demand and most sought after jobs. There will probably never be a shortage of the handyman repair, house-building, landscape contracting and plumbing jobs, to name a few.

To say that a tradesperson will be needed all day, every day is no exaggeration. The trade career pathway for young people considering a career path in the trades sector is both bright and promising.

Mother’s day

Celebrate the superhero in your life, your mum

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day, it’s a time to acknowledge our mums. Mothers are the emotional backbones of the family, they provide the holding place for everyone’s feelings and do their best to keep us from being hurt. These amazing women love us unconditionally, lift us up when we are feeling down, give us courage and hope and keep us safe a secure.

Our mothers worked hard and made sacrifices, so our lives would be better. There are not a lot of people willing to do that; on Mother’s Day let her know how much you appreciate your mum. This week at The Guardian we’ve put together a few suggestions to celebrate your mum on Mother’s Day.

Homemade baking

Find out what mum’s favourite edible treat is and whip up a batch of her most loved biscuits or a favourite cake. Research online or head to our local library and find an outstanding recipe, gather together the ingredients and get baking. For youngsters who might not feel confident baking, grab a packet of plain biscuits from the supermarket or a plain cake and decorate it with colourful toppings or delicious chocolate. Most importantly, don’t forget to clean up your mess once you’ve finished. Better still do your baking at a friend or relatives house so mum doesn’t guess you are baking something special just for her.

Housework

Let’s be honest, us mum’s aren’t that keen on housework, especially when we are tasked with tidying up other people’s messes. One of the best gifts you can give mum this mother’s day is a tidy home, clean windows, no dishes to wash and all the washing done (including folding it up and putting it away). Take care of any of these jobs for your mum and we can almost guarantee she will be over the moon. Better still send her out for the morning to visit friends whilst you tidy up.

Give mum the gift of a sleep in

How often do mums enjoy a sleep in? Why not give mum the gift of a sleep in. You may be excited to wake her up and wish her happy Mother’s Day, but try to hold back and instead use that energy to tidy up the house a bit. Keep the noise to a minimum and let mum have a much deserved sleep in and bask in the glory of her happiness at being well rested.

Make a homemade card

Believe it or not, mums are sentimental, even if they don’t always show it. The joy of being given a handmade card from your child is second to none. Some of us even store all of those homemade cards like they were treasure and when we are having a down day, look through them and it lifts our spirits. When you put time and effort

into making card and fill it with words of love it’s like gold for us mums.

Tyou are looking for a gift for Mother’s Day, make a point of shopping locally.

Winter Gardening

Improve your gardening using lunar cycles

• bove ground crops should be planted when the Moon is waxing.

• oot crops do best when the Moon is waning. Gardening by the moon relates to using the cycles of the moon to time your plantings, and this method of garden planning has been used by gardeners for centuries.

How It Works

The same gravitational force that creates the tides and brings the sea turtles ashore to lay eggs, also cause crops to grow. When the moon wanes, and its light and gravitational pull decreases, the Earth’s gravity kicks in and root crops bear happily in the ground. However, don’t plant anything on the dark of the moon (new moon). This is the time when plants should rest. It is a good time to kill weeds, because they will not grow back.

Make the most of your garden and tune into the cycles of the moon, this ancient method has proven results; you will be absolutely amazed at the outcome. Let’s find out more.

The Earth is in a large gravitational field, influenced by both the sun and moon. Tides are highest at the time of the new and the full moon when our sun and moon are lined up with earth. Just as the moon pulls the tides in the oceans, it also pulls upon the subtle bodies of water, causing moisture to rise in the earth, which encourages

growth. The highest amount of moisture is in the soil at this time, and tests have proven that seeds will absorb the most water at the time of the full moon. Planting by the phases of the moon makes it easy to plan out any important garden tasks, such as when to plant fruit trees (third quarter), condition the soil (last quarter) or plant out seedlings (first quarter). Plant just before the full moon to get the benefits of peak moisture.

During a waxing moon, the light increases toward a full moon. This is a great time for sowing and transplanting flowering annuals, biennials, grains, and melons. It’s also a good time to apply liquid fertilizer, prune, or graft to produce new growth more quickly.

During a waning moon, the light decreases as the moon goes from a full to a new moon. This is the time the energy focuses on the roots, which is a perfect time to plant root crops and perennials. pply solid fertili ers and compost at this time. You can also prune dormant plants and harvest. It is less likely that your harvest will rot.

The new moon (from new moon to the first quarter) is best for sowing or transplanting leafy annuals. These are plants where we value or eat the leaves or stem, like lettuce, spinach, cabbage, and celery.

The first quarter phase is most suited to fruiting annuals (not fruit trees) where we value or eat the fruit or seed-bearing part of the plant, like tomatoes, pumpkins, broccoli, and beans.

Full moon (from full moon to the third quarter) is best for sowing or planting root crops, as well as fruiting perennials, like apples, potatoes, asparagus, and rhubarb. You can also take cuttings and divide plants.

In the last quarter phase, avoid planting and focus on improving your soil. Weed, mulch, add compost and manure teas, and create new garden beds. It is also a good time to weed and take care of pests. Do not sow, plant, or prune 12 hours before or after the transition from one phase to the next.

Each week The Guardian publishes a tide table which also contains the moon cycles. We are currently in a waxing moon cycle, with a full moon happening this Saturday, 6th May 2023.

SoulUtionz Sports ‘All-in-Junior Rugby Academy’ Complete for 2023!

Friday’s rainy forecast meant the annual All-in Junior Rugby Academy was rescheduled for Sunday, 23 April. With a couple of the SoulUtionz Sports team members now residing in Australia the decision was made to split the age groups into two sessions to be more manageable for fewer facilitators, morning for U6-U9s and U10-U13s in the afternoon.

Still following SoulUtionz Sports elements model, Whenua (earth) focusing on fundamentals became the warmup with a combine relay and fun game. Groups then split into two skills focused sessions, Wai (water) for attacking skills, run-catch-pass, and Ahi (fire) the defensive components of rugby and rippa. The final element in the SoulUtionz Sports model is Hau (air) which covers communication skills and mental strength.

“It’s always a fun

full-on day for everyone, but this time with the split for older and younger groups meant we had a bit more time to focus on their specific age grade needs, and facilitators got a well-needed break in between,” says director and head facilitator, Joe Wineera.

Shout out to supporters, Shinade Hamilton, Kirsty Hay and Pam Graham on the background bits, Mackenzie Taikato, Kane McLeod, and Terina Graham with the little rippas. Rei Pourilane assisting Joe Wineera, and Moeka Koyama for the great photos which can be found on SoulUtionz Sports Facebook.

This year SoulUtionz Sports had high performance players Nic Sauira from the Crusaders Academy and Mako and Kahurangi half back Louie Chapman to help facilitate, imparting their rugby skills and knowledge for local players to aspire

to.

Thanks also to support with use of gear and facilities from Kelly Atkin, Huia Rugby Club and Tito Elisara from Riwaka Rugby Club, helping bring everything together for the rugby community.

SoulUtionz Sports would like to acknowledge contributions from Motueka Community Store, Bidfoods and Talley’s who supplied the end of session kai, NBS and Tasman Rugby Union for donating some giveaway goodies.

Chief Everything Officer, Terina Graham explains, “we know businesses, families, and communities are feeling the pressures of rising costs, so we scaled back asking for sponsorship and lessened the fee to participants. This year we had a surprise donation from local Liz Mcleod offering to cover fees for ten children, so we’d really like to thank Liz for her generous support

helping families out.”

Team SoulUtionz is pleased with the event and wishes to thank everyone for attending, especially the first timers to the academy and those new to rugby that gave it a go. Everyone did awesome!

In March SoulUtionz Sports held their Allin-Academy Netball Development Program with support from Motueka Netball Centre and aim to hold their All-in Touch Academy later this year.

With a strong focus on providing professional low to no cost opportunities, and positive experiences, SoulUtionz Sports aims to empower others to be their best version. They’d love for you to be part of the journey, keep an eye on SoulUtionz Sports Facebook page and website to be kept in the loop. https:// www.facebook.com/ SoulUtionzSports. www. If roses grow in heaven, Lord please pick a bunch for me, place them in my Mother’s arms, and tell her they’re from me. Tell her I love her and miss her, and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile. Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, but there’s an ache within my heart that will never go away.

Love Cristina.
