Nelson is ‘crawling’ with ants Andrew Board

Parts of Nelson are “crawling” with aggressive Argentine ants, forcing some home owners out of their house, says a local pest control business owner. Shane Warland of Flybusters says this week he is working on 18 different homes on one Richmond street, all with severe ant problems. “They’re rampant, they’re just taking over parts of Richmond and Nelson. The Wood area is crawling,” he says. “In Richmond there’s places they can’t even put their little kids out on the lawn because the ants just crawl all over them. They don’t sting but they do bite, and if you get a couple of hundred thousand ants over a little kid…” Shane says spring is traditionally a busy time for him getting rid of the “nasty”

Nelmac workers were out and about on Monday morning decorating Trafalgar St with hanging flower baskets. Linda Vandercolk says they started hanging them at 5am on Monday morning. “They’re small now but after a while they’ll get bigger and really bloom.” The project was first instigated by the Nelson City Council in 2000, and since then the council have organised hanging baskets to bloom each year from November through to Easter. The baskets are funded through the cooperation of local businesses and the council budget, a large portion of which is CBD parking meter revenue. All of the baskets in Hardy St, Trafalgar St and Bridge St will be up by Wednesday.

ants but this year is worse than others. “Because of the warmer winter I’ve been busy for months. You need a good few weeks of frosts and we haven’t had that for five years, so the numbers just keep booming.” Home owners are sometimes “hysterical” when they call him, with others having to move out of their homes until Shane has destroyed the ants. “We had a lady in The Wood, she would have been in her late 80s, and she woke up with them in her hair, in

Nelson is ‘crawling’ with ants say pest experts FROM PAGE 1 her ears and down her arm. She rang me and she was hysterical.” Tasman District Council biosecurity co-ordinator Lindsay Vaughan says the Argentine and Darwin ants are on the march,

spreading throughout the district. Lindsay says the ants commonly spread by walking, although they can also travel long distance by inadvertently hitching a ride in a car or in pot plants. “They can walk up to 150 metres a year,” Lindsay says.

Although Biosecurity New Zealand funded a $100,000 baiting programme for the highly invasive ants in Richmond in 2006, Lindsay says it’s too late for eradication because they have become so widespread. The only step people can take is to control the ants by baiting and spraying around their properties. “We have to live with them now. If people have a problem with them, they treat their own properties to control their numbers.” Lindsay says the ants are a nuisance because they Authentic can reach plague proporBarber Shop tions and invade proper7.30 - 1.00pm Daily ties, entering the house $9 - $12 Appointments and eating food and other essential to avoid waiting insects. Lindsay says there are a number of pest-eradication companies which can treat properties for the ants. The council website also has a section that provides everything residents need to know about the ants and their treatment. Argentine and Darwin’s ants are a honey-brown colour when viewed in sunlight. Most of the more common house ants are black.

Shane says, unlike other types of ants, they build satellite nests, which can have hundreds of thousands in each one. “They can just take over, if you disturb a nest in your garden you’ll have them crawling up your arms, they’re really bad. There can be 400,000 ants in a nest and if you have half a dozen nests on your property, that’s a hell of a lot of ants.”

Power change will be ‘bad for customers’

Simon Bloomberg A trustee of Network Tasman is concerned that a move to deregulate the company lacks transparency and could result in consumers paying more for their power. The Network Tasman Trust, which distributes electricity to 37,500 customers around Nelson and Tasman, is seeking public feedback on a proposal to “vary the terms of the deed” with the biggest change being a move to allow Network Tasman to be deregulated. However, Terry Kreft, who has been an industry-appointed representative on the trust for 18 years, says he is concerned about the process the trust is following to change the deed and has serious reservations about the intent of the changes. Terry says his main concern is that the changes will allow the company to be deregulated and that will cost the consumer. He says being regulated ensures your power delivery is fairly priced and that there is security of supply to your door, while “deregulating would remove the cap on pricing and the company could spend the money on whatever they wish”. “The changes are to allow the company to move from under

...deregulating would [mean] the company could spend money on whatever they wish. - Terry Kreft, Network Tasman trustee.

the regulator’s umbrella to a deregulated environment. There are advantages for the company but there is a disadvantage for the consumer in terms of cost and trustees are aware of some of these costs.” Terry says he’s also disappointed that there has been “no mention of why these changes are being made in any of the documentation” during the public consultation process. A decision by the trust not to seek an independent report or evaluation on the move is also a concern. “The trust hasn’t done any homework and the effects on the consumers who are the owners of the company are unknown. When a company comes to you with something like this you can see advantages and disadvantages and you then go out and get an independent report which tells you exactly what is happening.”

The proposed changes will also see the position for an industry-appointed trustee removed from the trust, but Terry says that’s not an issue. “What’s relevant here is the impact of these changes on the consumer.” Terry says the trust presently does a great job, allocating about $100,000 annually in grants to the community and issuing an annual refund to consumers, and they “should stick to their knitting”. The trust’s former chairperson Trevor Tuffnell and newlyelected chairperson Gwenny Davis were reluctant to discuss the proposed changes, referring the matter to the executive of Network Tasman. Network Tasman chief executive Wayne Mackey told the Nelson Weekly to speak to Network Tasman board chairperson John McCliskie, but he could not be contacted. Ian Barker, Ian Kearney and Nathan Fa’avae are the other trustees. The trust deed and proposed changes can be viewed at the trust offices, Craig Anderson at 270A Queen St, in public libraries and at networktasman. co.nz until 4pm on November 25. Written submissions are to be lodged at Craig Anderson by midday on November 23.

‘Toxic’ meth found in more Nelson homes

Andrew Board

The increase of available meth in Nelson is impacting local homeowners, with more and more homes testing positive for contamination. Last week, Nelson Weekly first reported news of an increase in methamphetamine, otherwise known as P, in the region, including record numbers of people failing a workplace drug test. Police area commander Mat Arnold-Kelly says the drug is a problem in the region and is driven by gangs. Kevin Taylor and Tracey Gray own Meth Screen, which specialises in testing homes for methamphetamine contamination. They say the growing use of the drug means more people are having homes checked before buying them. In the past three years they’ve tested 30 homes in the top of the South, with half showing

signs of P use. Tracey says the toxins from P in the walls of a home can cause respiratory problems, lack of sleep and skin rashes for those living there. Kevin says they’ve been shocked by the results they’ve been getting. “It’s staggered us just how many properties are out there that are contaminated, it’s knocked us back. And it’s not just in your stereotypical-looking flat either. There are multi-million properties that are contaminated.” He says the drug commands a higher price in the South Island so it seems those running it are sending it south. “There certainly seems to be more around at the moment because the use is causing the problems that we’re seeing.” Kevin says just a few months of P smoke in a house can put it over the Ministry of Health limit that makes it unsafe to live in. Cleaning up a house that’s been contaminated by P can cost up to $80,000.

Pharmacy owners annoyed at thefts Locally Owned and Operated

Andrew Board Thousands of dollars’ worth of drugs and money has been stolen from pharmacies around Nelson over the past fortnight. Queen St Pharmacy owner Sue Morris arrived at work last Wednesday morning to find a hole smashed through her ceiling and another hole in the wall. The story was first reported by nelsonlive.co.nz. She says she wasn’t sure if the burglars were still in the building when she arrived, so waited until others turned up. Along with extensive damage, Sue says their safe was smashed open with money and controlled drugs taken. She says the items taken would be worth thousands of dollars. Queen St Pharmacy is the latest to be hit, after at least two Nelson pharmacies were targeted last week. One of the

Queen St Pharmacy owner Sue Morris surveys the damage after her store was broken into last week. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Nelson pharmacies that was burgled last week confirmed that it was broken into but did not want the business name to be published. Sue says pharmacy owners around the region were sent an email late last week advising of the burglaries, and just before closing last night she saw two “suspicious-looking people” in her store.

“Because of the way they were looking around the store and the email that we received last week I decided to call the police, but I went through to a national call centre and they didn’t understand where I was and nobody turned up. So it was pretty frustrating that this happened a few hours later.” She says the police she dealt

with after the theft were “excellent”. The burglars left their tools in the store this morning, including a crow bar and screw-drivers. Sue says it looks as if they were passing stuff out through bars that cover the windows. She says they only went into the office, the only part of the building that isn’t alarmed.

Nelson prepares for future King Locally Owned and Operated

Kate Russell

He may not be as popular as his two royal sons, but the reality is Prince Charles will be King in the not-too-distant future and this Saturday he gets to see the best of Nelson. Prince Charles and Camilla are in town this weekend, and they’ll be soaking up as much of Nelson as possible during their short visit. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are visiting Nelson as part of their royal tour of New Zealand, which will see them travelling all over the country. After arriving in Nelson on Saturday morning, they will head to the Cawthron steps at 11.15am and walk down Trafalgar St and into Hardy St, which will give locals the opportunity to greet them. They will then visit the Nelson Market where they’ll be able to get a taste of local arts, crafts and produce. Nelson Market owner Nita Knight says it is a “huge honour” they have chosen to

McDonald's birthday party for 80 year old

ALL BLACKS: It was a must-watch and Nelsonians certainly didn't miss out. Steph Doucet and Laura Tibbs went to a packed Speights Ale House on Sunday morning to watch the All Blacks win their third Rugby World Cup, over Australia. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Jeans that fit

You wouldn’t normally expect to see an 80th birthday party at McDonald's, but one very special Tahunanui local says she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else for her big day. Frances Smith, who is also known as “Granny Smith” by her grandchildren, was surrounded by what she calls her “gang” of good friends at Tahunanui McDonald's on Thursday morning to celebrate her 80th birthday. The party was in true McDonald’s style, complete with McDonald’s memorabilia, party hats and cake. The mum of seven is a frequent visitor to the restaurant, which is just around the corner from her house. “I love coming here,” she says. “I bring my grandson here every sec-

ond Wednesday. The staff know me so well that they know my order off by heart.” Frances’s good friend Ruby Aberhart says she is the “most wonderful person,” and is always looking after people and putting others before herself. “She’s pretty special,” says Ruby. “Anytime someone has a birthday, she makes the cake. She’s a very giving lady.” McDonald's Tahunanui manager, Vaughan Warren, says that they don’t normally hold birthday parties at their restaurant, but they made an exception for one of their favourite customers. “She’s definitely a customer we like to see walk through the door,” he says. “She’s a class act and all the staff enjoy seeing her.”

Coastguard Nelson scoops a top award

Members of Coastguard Nelson, who have won ‘unit of the year’ in the central region on New Zealand at this year’s Coastguard awards. Photo: Kate Russell.

Kate Russell Coastguard Nelson has been recognised for its hard work over the past year, picking up an award for 'unit of the year' for the central region of New Zealand at the charity's annual awards. The central region encompasses nine units stretching from the top of the South Island to Wanganui, and there are four regions in total through the country. President of Coastguard Nelson, Graeme Richards, says they are thrilled to receive the award, which is the first time they've won it in his four years of being president. “Next year we'll be going for the national award,” he says. The award was based on things such as management, how finances are handled and presentation of the unit. “There is a lot of emphasis on how you're doing training wise too,” says Graeme. “But the bottom line is, it's about saving lives at sea.” Regional Instructor Robyn Holmes says that volunteers go through rounds of training before they can be out in the water. “It's quite a big commitment,” she says. Coastguard Nelson currently have a team of 21 volunteers but would love to have more people come on board. They are about to start a new round of training, and are looking for some new members. Anyone who is interested in volunteering can call Coastguard Nelson on (03) 548 8300.

NMIT abuzz as students survey options

NMIT opened the doors to its campus on Saturday so potential students could learn more about studying at the local institute. Every single course available through NMIT was represented by a mixture of student helpers, staff and tutors, who were available to answer all the important questions that come with choosing a study path. There were also plenty of activities running throughout the campus for the general public to enjoy, that gave them an insight into what study at NMIT is like. These included a ten point car check, making a killer espresso, a gym workout, how to look good in 15 minutes, | wallpaperand | curtains | blinds NMIT clinic practice manager Chris Fellows shows soon-to-be first paint year nursing jewellery and interior design, plus, a student, Alana Crook, the nursing facility. New date for police open day Nelson Police have rescheduled their open day, after wet weather forced them to call off the original date earlier in October. The open day will now be held this Sunday, and Nelson Police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn says that all the same things will be on offer, including station and cell block tours, fingerprinting and taser demonstrations. There will also be plenty of hands-on activities for kids, with police car rides and body armour to try on. The open days are held nationwide and give the public an opportunity to see modern day policing in action. Barbara says they will still be giving away toy police puppies, and some them have already been allocated ‘guardians’ which will be announced on the day, but there will also be a lucky draw for puppies that people can enter at the open day. Nelson Police Station open day, Sunday November 8, at the Nelson Central Police Station from 10am – 2pm.

The open day was an opportunity for people like Alana Crook, soon to be a first year nursing student, to get a look at the facility where she will be spending most of her time next year. “I’ve been in hospital as a patient and the nurses were always so nice and lovely, and I just want to be that person and look after people,” says Alana. “[I came to the open day] to have a look at the [nursing] facilities and see what’s involved. The campus is really nice and the people are really lovely.” The day is also a chance for those who aren’t sure what study direction to take to explore everything NMIT has to offer. Enrolments into NMIT courses are open right up until courses start next year.

More failing drug tests: I am not at all surprised to read of the increasing availability of P in Nelson. I have long been of the opinion that the local police force should spend more time and resources in combating the drug problem, rather than their ludicrous, over-the-top pursuit of drivers who are only a few kms over the speed limits. Most of these limits are too slow anyway, and I regularly observe more than one police officer lurking around parking areas on their revenue gathering exercises. What a waste of their taxpayer training. Louise Francis. I'm all for people having a puff on the clean green, but P freaks are scum!! Shawnee Burford-Young. Yuck!!! Vermin!!! Janelle Thorpe.

Tree poisoned? I have just been talking to our neighbour about why would the council poison a pine tree over 100 years old. He said other people were upset at seeing it die. The tree is on The Grampians Reserve just up from Blick Tce. In all my years of knowing the tree it has never had seedlings. It was a reasonably large tree in a photo taken in the early 1900s. All the other odd pine trees they have poisoned came from the ones planted on the Sugar Loaf and the town side of the Grampians. It will be a danger when the dead branches, which are heavily laden with cones, break off. Also, why did the council workers fill the old concrete tanning pit with all the branches they cut off the willows. These are now all beginning to sprout. The pit has historical significance for Nelson, it should be given more care. Sue Harris. Doctors support warmer homes: Great to see, but astonishing this needs to be done in 2015... Brian Gower. Monster Garage Sale for hospice Nelsonians will be able to snap up some bargains this weekend at a Monster Garage Sale on St Vincent St. Business Networking International Nelson is holding the sale at Tyres and More on Saturday to raise funds for the Nelson Hospice, which is their chosen charity. Organiser Stephen Halcrow says they are still looking for donations of household items for the sale, especially things like furniture, bric-a-

brac, retro items, antiques and tools. The sale will not include clothing and e-waste. Stephen said they had the idea to rally around for items, as most people have something they don’t need any more that they could give. “It’s a good chance for people to have a clear out and people often can’t donate their time but they might have something they could donate.”

Stephen says that people can drop off items to Tyres and More on Friday November 6th, or, if they can’t bring them in themselves, Stephen will be picking up items with a trailer from anywhere in Nelson from Brightwater to Atawhai, on the same day. The Monster Garage Sale will be held at Tyres and More, 36 St Vincent St, from 8am. To donate items phone/text Stephen on 02102352728 or email steve@nbd.co.nz.

WWI medals given to solider's great grandson Andrew Board

Adam Gausel knew his great grandfather went to war, but he had no idea his medals lay unclaimed just down the road. But thanks to the efforts of the Nelson RSA and Medals Reunited, the medals are back with their rightful owner. The World War I medals of Albert Francis Holyoke were one set of five medals that remained unclaimed at the Nelson RSA office. Then Medals Reunited approached the RSA to see if they could step in and look for the descendants. A few months later, Adam got a phone call asking if he’d like the medals of his great grandfather. “I knew that he and his brother went to war but I had no idea about the medals,” says Adam. “The family link was lost a long time ago.” RSA member Brian Ramsay then mounted the medals for Adam and handed them back to him. He says it will give Anzac Day services extra meaning. “I’ll be wearing them at Anzac Day services. I’ve been to them in the past but this obviously gives it a bit more of a special meaning. I’ve tried to find more information on him. My mother and grandmother died a long time ago so the link was lost.” Adam has been able to find out that his great grandfather was from Sandy

Bay and went to war with his brother. He was 31 when he went to war and was stationed in Egypt. RSA district president Derek Nees says returning the medals is a great thing for the RSA to do. “This is just another example of a success story that we have within the organisation. Being able to marry medals like this back with the owner – because he is the owner now – and to see them properly mounted and being worn is great.” Ian Martyn, of Medals Reunited, says his service is free and the joy of seeing the medals returned to the family is the reason why he does it. “It’s really great to see the person that they’re going to. We look at the serviceman’s file and extrapolate the information and glean what we can, and then search from there. So it’s really interesting and it’s great to hear the reaction from the family members, the majority are thrilled and say ‘we’d love to have them back in the family so they can be looked after’.” Adam’s first opportunity to wear the medals in public will be this Sunday, November 8, when the Nelson RSA hosts its Remembrance Day commemorations. Remembrance Day – also known as Armistice Day – commemorates the day the armistice was signed, officially ending WWI. The service will be held at Anzac Gardens at 11am this Sunday.

Whitebaiters finding success in Appleby

WHITEBAIT SEASON IN APPLEBY: Nelson whitebaiters Sonny Grant, left, and Yee Shek On have been whitebaiting on the Waimea River almost every day since the season opened. After a slow start to teh season, whitebaiters say Labour Weekend was very busy with many catching around five pound. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg The whitebait have finally started running, with “plenty of good catches of 10 pounds a day” in the Waimea River and reliable reports of “a hundred pounds a day” being caught in the Motueka River and Aorere River in Golden Bay. Sonny Grant of Bishopdale and Yee Shek On of Richmond, who have been out on the Waimea River almost every day since the season opened on August 15, say they were both catching “about a pound a day on average” just before Labour Weekend. That’s a far cry from Yee’s best catch of “a gallon and three-quarters in one scoop” on the Waimea River five years ago but still enough to keep them coming back. A retired market gardener, Yee says he’s been whitebaiting on the Waimea River for “30 or 40 years”. Although he’s pleased the whitebait have finally started running, he admits he’d still be out on the river if they weren’t. “It’s just good to be out here,” Yee says. “If I wasn’t here I’d only be out snapper fishing.” Nelson whitebaiter Nick Wright made a good call to take annual leave to go whitebaiting for two weeks, catching five pounds on the Saturday of Labour Weekend. “I always take my leave on the two biggest tides of September and October to go whitebaiting,” Nick says. “I got my biggest catch of five pounds on Saturday and I talked to other guys who got up to 10 pounds - you just have to be in the right place at the right time.” Although Yee says the catches on the Waimea River had improved, they were small fry compared to Golden Bay rivers where rumours of 100 pound catches were doing the rounds. Department of Conservation ranger Dirk de Vries has also heard those rumours, saying there had been 100 pound catches in the Motueka River as well. “It’s been a late season but the Motueka ran well the week before Labour Weekend, the same week things picked up in the Waimea,” Dirk says. “I’ve heard of people taking 100 pounds out of the Motueka and the Aorere is fishing really well, too.” However, Dirk says he’s concerned about the increasing number of whitebaiters who effectively extend the length of their nets beyond the legal limit of six metres, or across more than one-third of the width of a stream, by standing on the outside of the nets. Dirk says that’s illegal and he has issued five notices for that offence this season. The whitebait season closes on November 30.

Ponds filled with fish

The trout and salmon are ready for release in the Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust ponds in Appleby and now all that's needed are some keen young anglers to catch them again. About 330 rainbow trout and 100 salmon, around 750g to 1kg in weight, are being released in the man-made ponds near the Waimea River this week in preparation for the trust's first fishing day of the season on November 8. The trust will be holding additional fishing days on November 15 and December 13, as well as evening fishing days on November 24 and December 2 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm - a number of other dates have also been booked for special interest groups and disabled anglers. “We have also introduced the opportunity for some evening fishing which may suit some families," trust chairman Ian Kearney says. Ian says the ponds have been upgraded over the winter in preparation for this season's opening. The

"Our aim is to encourage kids to participate in outdoor activities and to make it an enjoyable experience for them. We also want to make it affordable for families, so our cost of $2 a child is very affordable." Ian says the ponds were

Pause for a moment and think….. seriously think…. and be honest • If you had a disability such as a heart attack, cancer or stroke and were unable to work in your business for some time, what would be the financial impact on your business and your family? • Worse still, what would happen to your business, and what financial impact would it have on your family, if you were to suffer premature death? • How will the lack of your expertise impact on the business? (and don’t say that your existing staff can replace that expertise - if that was the case, why are you needed in the business in the first place!) These are hard-hitting questions because the reality is, without you, at best your business will face a serious financial crisis; at worst it could be placed in liquidation and everything lost. There are many tragic stories where this has occurred. For your business to survive, and your family to be financially secure, it needs an immediate and substantial cash input. But where does that money come from? You certainly don’t want it to come from your cash reserves, even if they are substantial. That’s where we help. For many years, we have assisted businesses to put in place financial plans ensuring that if the worst did happen, the business is secure and the family’s income and assets are protected. We meet with you, analyse the financial risks to you and your business, put together a detailed, thorough and accurate plan for your business, highlighting the risks and offering well-constructed solutions to the issues. In many cases it will be by using quality insurance products, but where the business can self-manage the risk, we will recommend that alternative. Please remember, the worst does happen. We’ve been around long enough to see many testimonies to that. One of the privileges of being an insurance adviser is to see how the programme we put in place works when it has to. It gives us great satisfaction seeing clients financially survive, survive their medical trauma and then move on with their lives. The initial consultation is at our cost, so please give us a call. Your business may depend on it.

Nelson dancers take on LA

®

A group of 17 talented dancers from around Nelson have just returned from an experience of a lifetime in Hollywood. The dancers, who range in ages from 12 to 17, travelled to Los Angeles for 12 days where they attended workshops and performed on Hollywood Boulevard and Disneyland, as part of the ‘World Class Dance Tours’ programme. The Nelson team were part of a bigger group of 40 from around New Zealand who attended workshops at differ-

ent studios in Hollywood and Anaheim, before performing a 20 minute routine which consisted of Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap and Contemporary. Team manager Louise Devine, whose 14 year old daughter was part of the group, says it has been an incredible lifelong experience for all of them. “We were treated like superstars – it was a huge inspiration for them,” she says. But it wasn’t all a walk in the park, with the girls having to endure dancing in 32 degree

heat. “The dancing was tough, it really challenged them and we saw so much personal development. They were amazing, and are like a family now.” In preparation for the trip, the girls spent 18 months fundraising and training for the trip, rehearsing once a week from January with local dance instructor Rebecca Bignall. The dance group will be running a one-off performance to showcase their routine at 1903 Square, at 10:30am on November 21.

Comment: Safari hunt a thrill Steve Page

ing buddy Neil Simpson from the Motueka Gun Shop. Two hours later we were sitting on the bench in owner and guide Alex Monahan's tourist barn-come accommodation. All around was silence and we prepared ourselves for the shoot. Alex was instantly likable and took this trip of ours very seriously and was determined to make this a memorable hunt. The target was a fallow for the freezer. Cost, and that includes a nights accommodation, was $250 for my son Stan and I. By the end of the trip this was to prove to be the best $250 I have ever spent. I want you to know we paid and that's also what it would cost you as readers, so we got no special discount or requests for a favourable story. This is how it happened. We got ready, checked the guns etc and Alex gave us all an overview of the property. A quite large 1000 acres that took in two reasonable-sized hill ranges. Easily into the clouds on a bad day. More importantly, lots of good faces that the animals favoured later in the day. Whilst not spooky the range of animals was very alert. Goats, reds, sheep and fallow all shared the property. As we were walking out of the accommodation, a huge red deer ran alongside the low fence not more that 300 metres from us, grunted and tore off up the hill. Two fallow stags met him quite by accident on the trail and leapt both left and right through fencing to get out of his way. Although from where we looked there appeared little of no cover, that big red completely disappeared. Almost into thin air. Alex told us to not underestimate just how well these animals know the property, and how to

The first time I was offered Safari Park shooting I was a bit indifferent. It was 1985 and we shot fallow with legendary taxidermist and hunting guide Kerry O'Rourke. The location was the Black Forest in Otago and from memory it was June. And bloody cold. Way back then I learnt quite a lot. I remember very clearly glassing a side of a hill and while being told there were nine animals there I couldn't see a damn thing. Although I was at a distance of about 400 metres, all I could see was tussock, snow and the odd Manuka bush. Then, after a while I saw my first fallow grazing. All of a sudden it seemed like my eyes got trained I saw another and then another, until finally I truly knew what to look for. I did get a stag way back then but only after crawling on my hands and knees for about three hours dressed in flimsy white overalls. You see, shooting in a Safari Park guarantees only one thing. There are animals there. That's it. It also introduces a new set of rules that help the animal. In the wild they rely on only their own observation, but in this environment all of the animals sound the danger warning. Be it a whistle or grunt, or in this case a sort of sneeze by the goats. This happened every time you got close and every time the fallow disappeared for another few hours. It was, in fact, very tough hunting that required way more skill than luck. Fast forward 30 years and I got another chance to shoot at a local Safari Park at Doughboy Safaris, just south or Murchison. So I jumped at the chance. I took my 12 year old son Stan and shoot-

We went back into the barn which sits just at the start of the walking path up to the hunting grounds, when all of a sudden three fallow stags poked their heads out of the cover and walked into the top paddock for a nibble on the long green grass. All of us dropped to the ground and sat and watched. Alex sat behind Neil, Stan and I and talked us around the animals. Two were of good timber, and one had, for the third year put out a scrappy head. In a very kind gesture, Alex gave the OK for Stan to take a shot at him. Stan was on Browning 6.5x55 with a Nikon Scope. So with me whispering all of the safety points in his ear, he sat and quietly drew a bead on the animal. Just behind him I whispered, "behind the front leg, Stan" and "just squeeze the trigger, nice and relaxed". After what seemed like an eter-

nity the sound of a Hardy suppressor boom broke the silence. We watched and waited. Nothing. The other two animals bolted back into the safety of the bush cover followed by this stag. But this one was just that bit slower and after 100 metres he faltered and fell. In a testament to these tough little animals, the bullet Stan fired had, in fact, hit the top of the heart. We all leapt up and went over. A few photos later and Alex had the animal back to the cooling shed. We then continued up the hill in search of an animal for Neil. We stopped on the top plateau and I decided to just sit there and glass the great view of three hillsides that I had. Stan, Neil and guide Alex went further up about a kilometre. Neil spotted his target and fired. He was using a 22-250 and, although hit, the animal disappeared into a patch of bush. While we kept the

glasses on the bush, Alex went over to flush him out. He did on a number of occasions and again I was surprised as to how close he got before the deer ran. Probably only five metres. We were able to observe it all the way, along with the other animals who, while 5-600 metres away, also stood and watched us all. Just on dusk, the animal was felled by a careful barrage of shots from Neil and his trusty 22-250. Alex, acting more like a pack horse than a guide, bought the animal over to where we could heave it onto the ute. Happily, we all made it off the hill in the dark and down to the purpose-built cooling house where the animals were dressed and prepared for the trip back to Richmond. I had a ball. I learnt more about deer shooting that day from Alex and Neil than I ever had before and I spent some genuine great time with my son. He learnt firearm safety, to listen, to follow instructions, respect for animals, and what we have available to us. And best of all, respect for himself to be able to enjoy the great outdoors and to put into responsible practise all he had learnt. Alex has agreed to offer to our readers the same deal I got. One animal for the freezer, one night's accommodation in the hunter barn for two (bring your own tucker and bedding) for $250. I challenge you, dads, granddads, to take your boys or girls out and show them the great outdoors and give them a memory for a lifetime. Big thumbs up to Alex Monahan from Doughboy Safaris, who can be contacted on 03 523 9249. And also a big thanks to Neil and James from The Gun Shop in Motueka.
