Man must break law to vote

A Tahunanui man has been told the only way he can vote in this year’s local body election is to break the law. Daryl, who’s surname we’ve chosen not publish, leaves for a holiday in Turkey next week and won’t return until after the local body elections in mid-October. He says he’s been in touch with the electoral officer about the situation and asked if he could vote online, an option given to those voting overseas in the general election. But he

was told that option doesn’t exist for council elections and he couldn’t vote at the New Zealand consulate in Istanbul either. Posting letters to Turkey can be “dodgy” says Daryl and he wouldn’t trust it to arrive in time for him to cast his vote and get it back to New Zealand before the cut off. The gap caused by not having an electronic option left around a dozen Nelsonians with similar problems at the last council election and more are expected to be affected

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz this year. Daryl says one “informal” option was given to him by the electoral office: allow someone else to open his mail and cast the vote for him. The problem with that is that it breaks the electoral act, meaning it is against the law.

Warwick Lampp, the chief returning officer for Electionz which runs the election on behalf of Nelson City Council, says he would never recommend someone to break the law but if the voting packs are sent back correctly filled in then they are none the wiser and the vote is counted. “Most people use common sense with that, but it is illegal and it is an issue.”

Father’s Day road race Car enthusiasts young and old raced alongside each other at the Nelson Car Club’s Race Your Road Car event on Sunday. The 30 odd participants were also there to celebrate Father’s Day and it was a huge success says club member and event organiser Adrian Curtis. “It’s great because you can get out there and have fun in any road car, with no racing experience at all.” Sunday’s Motokana style event was the first time it had been held on a tarseal surface, making for a great day of tyre spinning and fast lap times says Adrian. “It was a great day with a variety of

competitors and cars out there.” Two self confessed car lovers who attended the race day have maintained a friendship for more than 60 years, completely based on their mutual soft spot for all things motor related. Leicester Harris says he and mate Max Smart, “farmboys from way back” entered his Westfield kitcar on the day, partly to “prove I can still do it, but also for the fun, fellowship and the smell of petrol”. He says the event was perfect for younger car enthusiasts and Max agreed say-

changing the rules so electronic votes are eligible in local body elections, like they are in most other elections. “Yes, absolutely. We do 120 elections a year and if you take out the council elections there’s probably about 100 that have an online component so it’s becoming second nature and will change and probably before 2016.” Daryl says he was shocked when he discovered the only way he could cast his vote was to break the law and says it’s about time the government closed the gaping hole created by the act. Warwick says that although the act is strict, it is open for change and it wouldn’t take much for an electronic option to be added. “The silly thing is that the act currently allows it, but the regulations to back it up haven’t been written to provide

it. In the act it says you can vote electronically but the regulations make no mention of it. So they need to be written to allow online voting, which should be pretty straight forward.” He says the minister of local government recently said he would instruct the department of internal affairs to write the regulations and Warwick is hopeful the issue will be solved by the next election. “At the last election we had about 30 phone calls on this issue from around New Zealand, with about a dozen from Nelson. Just this morning I had a call from the North Island where there is a group of 20 people going on a tour group who leave the day before voting opens and are coming back the day after voting closes. So it sometimes happens. There will be many other cases where people make their own arrangements and we never know about it.”

A shock dose of a chemical used to kill weeds and algae in ponds is a last ditch attempt to clean up the Modeller’s Pond in Tahunanui before a $1million upgrade begins next year. The pond has suffered from algae for years and the council has tried many times to fix it by using various products and even draining the pond completely in the hope the algae would be gone when it was refilled. Nelson City Council currently has $495,000 in its budget to fix the pond but it is hoping a shock dose of the chemical Aquathol K, followed by monthly doses with Aqua Boost, an organic product commonly used in swimming pools, will fix the problem. If so it will come at a significantly cheaper cost to ratepayers, with the monthly cost around $200. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the council is hopeful it will work but if it doesn’t it’s likely the entire pond will be drained and the bottom of it concreted, at a cost of around $1million. “The solution we know will work is to concrete

The council tried to find other remedies in the past that have had limited success and now before we go down the concrete pathway, we’re giving this new chemical one last trial to see if it works, if it does it will save ratepayers money.” The concrete plan isn’t set in stone though, it will have to go through the annual plan process next year if the latest plan is unsuccessful. “If we were to concrete it, it wouldn’t happen until next year at the earliest anyway. So we’ll try this, we’re

hopeful this does the trick, if it does, very good. If it doesn’t we’ll have to have allocations in the annual plan to get it concreted next winter,” says Aldo. If the concrete is needed, Aldo says it is a significant amount of money but he says the pond is worth it as it’s a valuable community asset so it needs to be looked after. Aquathol K was put in the pond late last month and is a non-carcinogenic weed killer and has no effect on fish, according to its distributor. NCC staff will report back on its success, or not, in December.

Historic house quake damaged morE STorES confirmED: A cafe, a sushi shop and a greengrocer will be joining the new Gibbons Holdings retail complex in Richmond and they should all be open before Christmas. While most people will recognise the site, situated across from the Richmond Mall, as being a future home to The Warehouse, Kmart and a new Couplands store, Nelson Weekly can confirm that Aki Sushi, Benge & Co greengrocers and Columbus Coffee will also open there, with Gibbons Property’s Louise Devine labelling it as a “one stop shop”.

Two chimneys on the historic Melrose House may have to come down after suffering damage from one of the recent Seddon earthquakes. Nelson City Council confirmed this week that it is assessing its options with the chimneys and part of the house will remain closed until they are fixed.

The popular cafe is still open for business though as it is at the other end of the house and not near the affected chimneys. The function rooms on the eastern corner of the house are also closed and the area cordoned off. The council is looking at either strengthening or removing both

the building’s chimneys from the inside. If removal proves to be the only option the roof top sections would be replaced with non working replica chimneys in keeping with the history of the house. The council is working with the Historic Places Trust on the project and will need a resource consent.

Cawthron gets $45m for research Your Community Newspaper

Nelson’s Cawthron Institute has received a record research grant from the government of $45.4 million, it announced last week. The new funding round includes significant investment in Cawthron’s shellfish and coastal marine research that is supporting sustainable development of primary industries. The grant was announced by minister of science and innovation Steven Joyce. “This is a fantastic result for our scientists,” says Cawthron Institute chief executive professor Charles Eason. “It is great that our nationallyunique expertise in the areas of algal ecology, marine and freshwater ecology, biosecurity and natural compound chemistry, has been recognised.” Cawthron Institute chairman Ian Kearney is thrilled with today’s announcement, saying it acknowledges the important role Cawthron plays in supporting New Zealand’s economic development. “This research investment round is possibly the most significant in Cawthron’s 90 year history,” he says. “Clearly there is a desire for more sustainable use and better

protection of our coastal marine resources, and we are ready to support that. “It is also hugely important to the regional economy. Cawthron is one of the region’s largest employers and in particular offers local employment opportunities for highly qualified scientists. This research funding ensures that we can continue to provide these employment opportunities.” In total, Cawthron and its research partners will share approximately $7.4 million per annum from four programmes submitted to MBIE for funding consideration early this year. Two of these, the Safe New Zealand Seafood and Cultured Shellfish programmes, secured capability funding over seven years. This new type of longterm funding supports nationally significant capabilities. Approved projects include further work on the selective breeding of shellfish for which Cawthron has established an international reputation. “This research funding allows us to build on our expertise in these areas and provides greater certainty to plan for the future.”

Nelson Weekly celebrates 3rd birthday Nelson’s only locally owned and operated newspaper turns three this week. Nelson Weekly was founded in 2010 by two families, one from Tahunanui and the other from Richmond. It is the only locally owned newspaper in the region with the other two major

newspapers – Nelson Mail and Leader – both owned by Australian multi-national, Fairfax. Publisher Steve Page says the Weekly has enjoyed strong support from day one with advertisers thrilled to have an alternative paper to market their businesses through

and readers excited to read a newspaper filled with local news only. “Right from the start we hit the ground running and haven’t stopped. It’s been great and we look forward to it continuing.” He says while doom and gloom is being spread by daily newspapers, it is the exact

opposite for the Weekly and its sister paper, the Waimea Weekly. “We’ve been busy recruiting new staff, expanding and it’s a really exciting time for our newspaper. We see nothing but a bright future and we’re thrilled with how Nelson folk have really supported the Weekly.”

Free shoes for school students Walking a mile in someone elses shoes has taken on a new meaning for a local charity, that is offering community members a chance to help local students in need. Walk with Us is a new local Charitable Trust whose mission is to provide free school and sports footwear and socks to children who despite needing them the most, sometimes miss out. Eight local schools have already signed up to join the early pilot programme including Victory, Richmond and Wakefield primary schools, who will provide feedback on the programme. Walk with Us has been established by a group of Nelson and Tasman women who wanted to contribute something positive

to the community in a targeted and specific way. Following discussions with local schools and teachers, and researching similar organisations from around the country, the group has decided that providing school and sports footwear fits well with their goals and aspirations as well as a community need. Walk with Us is looking for sponsors and donations and have already heard from Dave Heyward of Stirling Sports and Number One Shoes who are keen to be involved. To donate or become a sponsor for Walk With Us, contact AnneMarie Teece on 027 544 8255 or get in touch with Nancy Cowling 027 496 4720.

Three homes were raided for illegal dog tracking collars last week, but a Nelson pig hunter says even that won’t deter him from using them. The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment confirmed to Nelson Weekly that it had issued three search warrants in Nelson-Tasman to obtain evidence related to the US-imported dog tracking devices, which it says have never been legal in New Zealand. Although the MBIE confirmed the search, it refused to comment in much detail on the seizure saying it was not appropriate as the evidence may be used in prosecution. Some tracking devices are illegal because they operate on the same radio frequencies as people travelling and working in rural areas, such as forestry workers, Department of Conservation rangers, and search and rescue crews. It is illegal for anyone else, including pig hunters, to use the frequencies due to the possibility of interference and the fact that other people are paying to use them. But a Nelson man, who imported a collar and unit valued at $1400, says the illegal tracking collars were

still being used by many fellow hunters because of the in-depth GPS which shows where you are, and where the dogs are, in detail. “Pretty much everyone hunting uses these, even randoms I’ve met in the bush, they’ve had them too,” he says. “It shows all the ridges, the contour lines, extra roads that you can go down to get closer.” And when asked if news of the seizures would stop him from using him, the man says he would instead find other ways to get around it. “I’m never going to stop using them. They’re just too valuable.” Just last month, pig hunter Conrad Adams told Nelson Weekly that Radio Spectrum, who control the licensing of radio frequencies, needed to change its attitude towards pig hunters and come up with a positive solution instead of criminalising “good guys” who simply want to hunt. A spokesperson from the MBIE says the frequencies can be used for emergency calls and has been designated for use by landmobile radiotelephone users for the last 30 years.

Quake risk halts centre upgrade The future of the Trafalgar Centre is under threat and all proposed upgrades have been put on hold after a disastrous earthquake assessment was delivered to the council last week. Nelson City Council will now have to decide on the centre’s future after the report highlighted the costs involved in earthquake strengthening and the

potential for liquefaction. Councillors resolved to do more investigation on the best options for the future with the first step being a peer review of all the assessments done on the building to date. A report on the various options will come back for the council to look at in the new term.

In the meantime, the upgrades planned for the Trafalgar Centre will be put on hold until further research is carried out. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the council needs to make the right decision as it’s a wellused facility. “In the meantime, the centre will remain open, subject to any decision on safety from the Building Consent Authority, and

will continue to take bookings if users are happy to proceed once they know the status of the building.” The council also decided that the emergency designation of the Trafalgar Centre will change so that is not used as a post-earthquake evacuation centre but could still be used in a flooding or pandemic event if needed.

Buccaneers’ treasures now on display Unlike their namesakes, these Buccaneers have earned their treasures and now have a new display cabinet to show them off. John Goodman organised the trophy cabinet for the various trophies and memorabilia that the invitational side has collected over the years. It includes trophies given to the region’s top performers, club ties, keepsakes from various international tournaments and other bits and pieces. John says the cabinet idea has been talked about for a few years but it’s great to see it up. “I’d like to thank Richmond Glass, The Sellers Room and the Car Company for supporting Buccaneers John Goodman, Ross Butler and Bob Neighbours with the new trophy cabinet at Tasman Rugby Union’s headquarters. With the amalgamation of the three unions to form the Tasman Rugby Union, the need and opportunity for that type of game no longer exists. Performers take to different stage

with Sinead Ogilvie

Tuesday August 20 The cat which had to have its leg amputated after it was caught in an illegal gin trap is well on the road to recovery. The cat, whose original name was Ollie but has been nicknamed ‘Jim’ by SPCA staff, has taken great steps towards building up the muscle tone in his three remaining legs. He has already had plenty of offers of new homes, including one local lady who already has a three legged cat, who is keen to open her home to the animal. The original owner has also paid a significant amount of the vet bill, which was subsidised by the Halifax Vet Clinic.

Tuesday August 27 The Nelson Weekly inbox has been inundated with almost 100 emails from people wanting to be in to win a pack of local award winning home brewer Dale Holland’s beer. The lucky winners of the packs, which include a beer glass and four bottles of beer, are Doug Barry-Martin and Brian Burke. Congratulations.

Tuesday January 22 Aspiring Nelson actress Claudia Peters has finally touched down in the Big Apple and is loving attending the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Art. Tuesday August 1 A man charged with the daylight bashing of a long-serving Nelson police officer has appeared in court to apply for electronically-monitored bail. Matei Peti, 23, allegedly attacked the officer after he and a colleague tried to stop Peti attacking a woman outside Nelson Public Hospital late last month. The officer, a senior constable with 40 years’ experience, required 40 stitches to his face and dental reconstruction surgery. Peti has pleaded not guilty to charges of male assaults female and wounding with intent to injure. ‘Art saved me after stroke’

Andrew Board

Catherine Kent celebrated her 40th birthday last November in perfect health. She doesn’t smoke, eats healthy food, rarely drinks alcohol and was in training for a marathon. The mother and wife was also an art tutor and studying for an advanced arts diploma. Life was “perfect”, until just weeks after her birthday when she had a stroke which left her unable to make a cup of tea, dress herself or even talk. But almost a year on Catherine is back running, talking and this month will even graduate with her arts diploma. It’s been an incredible recovery that she says started with her husband’s quick thinking and a fridge magnet. Catherine and her daughter last year took part in the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day fun run. There they were given a fridge magnet from the Heart Foundation that had the signs of a stroke on it and for four months Catherine’s husband David had read it every time he opened the fridge. Catherine said her stroke happened while she was out on a run, which seemed a lot harder than normal. She came home and started working on her assignment for the course and the words she’d written days earlier no longer made sense, she had a sore neck but still didn’t realise what was happening. The pain then spread to her jaw and when David made her lunch after returning home from a bike ride he knew straight

The exhibition will be the final piece of her art diploma, completed less than a year after a stroke forced her to relearn how to talk, draw and dress herself. Even as the doctors were talking to me about it I still didn’t believe it was a stroke.” She says David’s quick thinking saved her as the longer a stroke goes untreated the more damage is done to the brain. “I thought ‘I’m young, fit, healthy, this can’t

be happening to me. But it can happen to anyone, no matter the age, health or otherwise.” Catherine had to face the reality of a long recovery but after eight weeks tried to return to work. “I just couldn’t do it and it was then that I realised I needed to take more time out.” Catherine’s mother came over from the UK to help teach her how to dress and eat

all over again but she was determined not to give up her studies. “Everyone told me to stop it or to put it on hold but I really wanted to carry on so I did.” With only one semester finished when the stroke happened she had to battle through her second and final semester to graduate. She says it was extremely tough work but she believes it’s helped her recovery. “I found creating really therapeutic and it was the only time I didn’t hurt and my brain wasn’t sore.” She had to learn how to draw again but says that helped her coordination in her hands. “The hardest part was definitely writing, explaining my work. That was really hard for me.” This month Catherine and another student from Nelson doing the same extramural course will jointly exhibit their work at the Icon Gallery in Upper Moutere. The exhibition is the final part of her course and once finished she will graduate. Something she says she is extremely proud of. “And I think my husband and daughter are pretty proud as well. It will be a great moment.” Catherine says she now wants to set up an art class for others with brain injuries as she believes it’s a great way to regain some skills and help with recovery. She is also back running three times a week and enjoying swimming when she can. • Stroke Awareness Week runs from September 9-15 and this year the foundation is running a “FAST campaign” to help people recognise the symptoms of stroke. 70 years of marriage for local couple After being married for 70 years, a local couple say their wedding anniversary tomorrow will be just like any other day. Kath, 92, and Claude Teece, 95, first fell for each other while away on a fishing trip in their teens, and have been together ever since. Theirs is a rare long-term love story, and Kath puts the success of their union down to a solid effort on both of their behalf. "We've had a few rough patches, but we just kept on trying, and here we are." She says the day of their anniversary 'sort of crept up’ on them and the occasion was celebrated with a get together with family – which includes their three children, grandchildren and great grandchildren – and friends on Saturday night. Kath and Claude have always lived in Nelson or Motueka, with a stint on a farm near Upper Moutere.

The only time they have been separated was for three years when Claude went to war when he turned 21. The separation never did them any harm though says Claude, who was based out of Maadi Base in Cairo on the banks of the River Nile during World War Two. They wrote letters backwards and forwards weekly, resulting in an inevitable engagement ring being sent in the post. "They do say that absence makes the heart grow fonder – and I can't get rid of her now" he says. While most spouses could probably list off a dozen annoying habits that their other half just can't seem to shake, this isn't the case for these two who are "the best of friends" and still get along famously. "We are so used to each other that we don't notice. And if we haven't gotten used to each other by now then we never will" says Claude.

Bodybuilding champ celebrates with KFC Saturday night’s KFC was probably the best dinner David Lowe has ever tasted. After sixteen weeks of a strict 2400 calorie diet with no saturated fat, working out in the gym for four hours a day, David celebrated winning the WFF Best Overall at the Top of the South Classic 2013 Regional Body Building Show with a chicken burger filled with nachos. The 22 year old Chorus employee, who had to endure friendly banter from his co-workers during the four month stint, says he was greeted with cheers and text messages after Saturday’s competition – his first since signing up to the gym four years ago. Having played football all throughout his teenage years, his former coaches probably wouldn’t recognise the human hulk that flexed his muscles on the Theatre Royal stage, with David reaching just five per cent body fat and 77kg during his transformation. The former Nayland College student admits there were plenty of times where he wondered why he had set himself the goal of becoming a bodybuilder, why he had prioritized training over his social life and why he was eating plain meat and vegetables every night. “Everything else in my life took a step back, I had no social life, I wasn’t texting my mates as much, I wasn’t going out to town, I wasn’t going

I had maybe an hour at night to relax.” But after winning his class and taking out the best overall award for his federation, David says he would go through it all again, just after a well deserved break. “Yes, just not for a while, in another year or two. If I can stay in better condition and do it in ten to twelve weeks then I could handle it a bit better.”

0800 10 35 35 Richmond Glass taking on Novus

A joint venture between two market leaders in glass will see Nelsonians better off says Richmond Glass director Russell Gilden, who has recently taken on the dealership for Novus windscreen repair and replacements for the region. Richmond Glass will now operate Novus windscreen repairs and replacements from both the Richmond and Nelson branches of the business, offering wide coverage and man power to the region. Novus has been in Nelson for a number of years and Richmond Glass is no stranger to automotive glass repairs, so joining forces will mean local customers will have peace of mind and far reaching guarantees says Russell. “While we’ve already built a great name for ourselves repairing and replacing automotive glass, aligning ourselves with Novus who are also a long standing and well known business means we are now a preferred supplier to all major insurers and can offer the Novus nationwide guarantee.” Russell is now the supplier of Novus for the top of the south, operating as the agent for Novus in both the Greymouth and Marlborough regions, and now Nelson and Tasman. Novus offer full workshop and mobile services and also have a courtesy car available.

Do you agree with me that we could have another long hot summer again? We could do, because we have had a lot of rain of late, [especially on the weekends] as you will note! Long hot summers mean constant watering, or sad, dry plants, which all help to make us feel mean and nasty. Not a good thing. Some may say “there is nothing you can do about it” But oh yes we can!

• Straw is pretty hard to find now but there is still plenty of mulch or compost about. And there is plenty of newspaper too. So here’s what we do. Place layers of wet newspaper on wet soil. Both must be really wet! Cover this with mulch or compost. I prefer compost because it helps to condition the soil. I shall be adding lawn clippings as well. Why? Because I want to! If you want a tidy effect then don’t do that. • Next we can think about assembling plants that are not fussy about constant watering. Many natives fall into this category. “But I don’t want a garden full of natives” some may cry. “I want a pretty garden with flowers to look at and to pick” And so you can. • Natives, perennials, and ornamentals can be very pleasing grouped together. I have planted alstromerias within a circle of corokias of the same variety. They [the alstromerias] look particularly well with plants with divaricating misty grey foliage. The plants surrounding the alstromerias offer support for stems that are inclined to flop about. Corokias don’t have

only grey foliage. There are attractive browns and greens which blend well with other plants, and when the perennials die down in winter, there is still a pleasant mixed foliage garden giving winter colour and interest in the cold months. • Roses blend well with pittosporums, again those with dainty foliage, to set off the lovely rose blooms Daisies look super with grasses as well. • White and yellow daisies among bronze coloured grasses look most effective making an unexpected combination. Why not try it? • I have a garden that has not, and will not, receive any man/lady made watering this summer. So I have removed all the perennials and low growing shrubs to an area that will receive several doses of water. I have taken all the plants in pots away and grouped them in this new garden. This, hopefully will add textural interest. There is a bit of a problem though. The new garden takes up the last bit of lawn in the whole garden, so where do I find these lawn clippings that I so love? Never fear. I will find a way! • But this isn’t giving the baby its bottle or should we say greens! Plant now lettuce, onions, silverbeet, spinach, and hurry up with the potato planting. Tomatoes too if they are to grow in the glasshouse. Don’t bother with veges that are a bit frost tender. You are wasting your time. • So with these wise words, I will leave you in peace for another fortnight! And good gardening to you all.

Proud to support Appleby School’s Country Fair

www.nzhops.co.nz

Appleby School has a long history, having opened its doors more than 150 years ago. Over those years the school has forged an excellent reputation and made the papers many times. In recent years the school has hit the headlines for an additional reason – the success of its spring fair. Ph: 545 7107 Passie & Co is Dutch for passion. Passion for food, but above all, passion for others. “I’ve spent a lifetime of halves. Being half Dutch, and half broke, half happy and half sad, and blaming other people for half of my mistakes.” Yet it only took Marcel three years working at Greengables rest home to realise the secret of being happy was free. A smile cost nothing, and is passed on so often, yet you only ever have to pay for it once. It can be given away time after time, but it will always return home. “I would love to thank all of the residents at Greengables who were so kind in giving me that little smile, even when their meat, was a little tough to eat.” The moral behind Marcel’s story, which started long before Greengables but somehow flourished there, is that Passie & Co is not built from bricks. It is not owned by banks. But is instead a little home away from home, that is run from the heart and not by dollars. “My need for profit will never be outweighed by a greed of wealth.” Marcel refers to Passie & Co, where like minded businesses that go hand in hand meet, as his little garden. Colourful, and at times in need of a weed, but always a place where he can draw a big breath, and smile again. While the Passie & Co story continues, Marcel is living out his dreams of making others happy on a daily basis. Truly content in his business, every day he fills the Passie cabinets with sweet treats and savoury delights, tempting locals who catch a glimpse through the window or make the trip across town to visit. Everything from handmade fudges, truffles, chocolates to homemade pies and pasties are on display, so why not call in and try for yourself the wonderful homemade food that is the centre of Passie & Co.

average playing age of around 40, could also call their result an upset, being unable to beat Tasman throughout the regular season. Craig Brett, who scored in the final, admits the result was “against the run of play”. “We hadn’t had a win against them all season and we had to be cautious with a few boys on yellow cards but we’re thrilled,” he says. “We’ve won it a few times so it was good to have it go our way.” And even though both finals went against regular season form, both Federal and Tasman were clear favourites to reach the division one final and it’s something Craig seasons will need to be reviewed before next season, suggesting a more ideal situation would be to have more competitive clubs in the competition.

Last week’s solutions

Federal’s stranglehold on Nelson Hockey has been loosened, with Tasman clinching a thrilling penalty shootout victory during Saturday’s women’s final. But while the shock result went the way of Tasman, Federal proved too good in the men’s final, pushing out to a 3-0 lead in a pulsating fixture. Having led 2-0 within the opening stages, Tasman women found themselves staring down a 3-2 defeat to a Federal side it hadn’t beaten all season. But the side’s gamble to pull the goal keeper and add an eleventh outfield player with just eight minutes on the clock proved to be a masterstroke with Bronie Edwards scoring in the final 30 seconds. The late equaliser sent Federal into a state of disbelief, while in turn, sky rocketing the confidence in the Tasman camp going into a straight penalty shoot out. Two Federal players failed to score with Rebecca Kersten’s touch passing the keeper but also the playing turf, handing Tasman the trophy – just the second time Federal has lost it in the past ten years. While the men’s final was more straight forward, the Federal side, which has an

Local footballers ready to host NZ's best The last time Nelson College for Girls won the country’s top school football tournament was in 1996, the year the current captain Sophie Daines was born, so she reckons it’s about time they did it again. Nelson College for Girls are competing in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Football tournament in Nelson this week and Sophie says it will be an exciting week for the team. “We’ve been playing hard so we just need to put that into practice and it will be a fun week.” The tournament features the top 32 schools in the country and Nelson will feature alongside Waimea College and Marlborough Girls College, who beat Nelson last weekend in the region’s club competition. But Sophie says Nelson has been a team that's been im-

proving all year and they will look to continue that this week. “Our season started a bit slow but lately we’ve been playing really well as a team. I’m confident that we’ve put the effort in and done as much as we could preparation-wise.” Coach Steve Whittington says the girls have trained hard and he, along with co-coach Nic Foster, are looking forward to watching the girls get stuck in. They played their first games yesterday and another two today. Sophie says the team’s first goal is to make the top 16 and work upwards from there. “Hopefully we can then get to the top eight and keep going and keep winning.” All the games are at Saxton Field and Sophie says the team would love as much home-town support as possible.

Jacks win again Jacks OPD are Nelson's premier netball champions for the second year in a row, and although they were the side lifting the trophy at full-time, Thursday night's final certainly didn't go to script. With only one loss in the previous two seasons, thrashing their finals opponents by 30 points in the previous fixture and boasting the tag of number one qualifiers, Jacks Office Products Depot were hot favourites going into the premier grade final against Robbie's Bar and Bistro Richmond, and the scoreline of 50-47 was much tighter than the blow out predicted by some. In fact, Richmond had the upper hand in the first two quarters, with ace shooter Nicki Rampton helping her side to a 27-24 lead at half-time. But Jacks OPD, who confirmed their championship credentials right throughout the season, finally kicked into gear with some swift substitutions having a sharp impact, pushing the team ahead 41-37 going into the final 15 minutes.

Jacks OPD after winning Nelson's premier netball competition for the second year running. Photo: Phillip Rollo. While the score was even at 43-43 with just minutes to go on the clock, Richmond just couldn't regain the dominance it had in the opening two spells, and some late turnovers proved costly with Jacks OPD edging ahead by three to seal the win. Jacks OPD coach Robyn Leonard, who was not afraid to drag under performing players on the night, says finals netball is a "different kettle of fish" and was not surprised to be pushed closely by Richmond. "We knew

it was going to be very tough against them. They've got a lot of good experience and a lot of very good athletes so we always knew come the big one that they'd be there looking for the win," she says. Having won the title last year as well, 2013's effort seems to trump it, according to Robyn. "This year the whole premier competition has been tighter and it was a bit more cut throat so I think that it made it a bit more exciting and a bit sweeter."

Fun day for Future Ferns There was fun, fun, fun at the Tactix Future Ferns Final at Saxton Courts on Saturday. All teams wore their netball uniforms however they were asked to dress up for the occasion with Tactix colours of red and black. The day began with a mass warm up before each team played three games. Teams went to great lengths to embellish their attire, faces and hair. Mapua Mavericks had spent last Sunday creating their team banner, and then they had a practice to make sure they could play with the “huge Minnie Mouse bows” in their hair. The Mavericks went all out as they had a table set up in front of their team banner, with refreshments (complete with chocolate cake iced with red and black) their team photo was autographed, straws and serviettes completed the red and white spot theme. It was warming to hear that the girls had helped every step of the way. I talked to the girls between games (and between mouthfuls of chocolate cake!) Denim said she loved everything about netball, but shooting was her favourite part. Olivia said she tried not to con-

Holly enjoyed learning different techniques at training. Rhea knows she has a long reach that she uses well at goal defence. When asked their toughest opposition Brydie could remember that they were defeated 24-4 but along with her team mates couldn’t remember the name of the team. Tiarne said she loves netball because you make new friends and it’s heaps of fun. Angel said she tries hard to get out in the open and tries not to knock the ball out of the hands of other players. Jess’ favourite player is Irene van Dyke because she is a really nice person and a good player. And when asked what their coach had taught them this year there was a chorus of replies – spread out, dodge, come forward, fast passes and jump! That’s a whole lot of skills and knowledge that Shara Manihera has taught her girls this season.
