Opportunity to join Fun Creative Co.

Albert Einstein has long been revered so when he has said “imagination is more important than knowledge” it seems logical, when seeking out extra curricula activities for the kids, to veer towards one that gives space for imagination to grow wild.

And that’s exactly what Fun Creative Co’s drama classes do. With a curriculum designed by founder and teacher Rachel Coward, the classes are designed to encourage creative ways of expression on stage.

Now there’s an opportunity for more students to reap the benefits with spaces available in the Mapua and Motueka classes.

Rachel says the

changes she’s witnessed in her students have been incredibly positive.

“They’ve grown in their self-worth, sense of belonging, they stand taller and feel heard. Students have often told me they like our approach of nothing being compulsory,” says Rachel. “We give the students a choice to feel comfortable when they are ready which is important to us.”

With Steiner teacher Margot Schweigman on board teaching classes, Rachel says their emphasis is on creating more fun in the students’ worlds.

With anxiety on the rise in our young people, the teachers at Fun Creative Co have the ability to make children feel safe

“The arts offer life skills to support and discover new ways to relieve stress and encourage confidence in a safe space. The life skills you use in drama are extremely useful.”

Fun Creative Co is not just limited to drama classes with Eugenie Piozin-Belloir teaching piano at Parklands, Tasman and Brooklyn schools.

“We use themes each term to educate the students beyond just piano, to create a bigger love for music, composers, scales around the world and styles of music.”

With piano classes largely booked out, you can add your child to a waiting list or enrol

them in drama while you wait. Every local child is able to attend a drama class free of charge to get a feel for it.

Heaphy Track reopening but Queen Charlotte Track temporarily closed

The Heaphy Track reopened on Friday 30 June after work to clear fallen trees and repair other storm damage, but the Queen Charlotte Track remains temporarily closed.

The two tracks are among a number of tracks and access roads to conservation areas in the top of the South Island damaged by the severe weather over the weekend of

17-18 July. Some are temporarily closed while Department of Conservation (DOC) staff assess damage and carry out repair work.

DOC is advising people to check its website www.doc. govt.nz for the latest information on the status of tracks, campsites and access to conservation areas before heading into the outdoors.

DOC Buller Operations Manager Suvi van Smit says the storm damage to the Heaphy Track was mostly on the coastal section, between Kohaihai and the Heaphy Hut.

“DOC staff have repaired damage to the track as much as possible and cleared fallen trees. Extra care is needed on the coastal section of track. To safely

cross damaged track areas, mountain bikers should dismount and walk.

“The bridge over Pitt Creek by the Heaphy Hut was washed out and a temporary ford is in place to enable it to be safely crossed.”

The Queen Charlotte Track has multiple slips, fallen trees and cracks in the track and is impassable in some places. A bridge at Davies Bay

was washed out. The entire track has been temporarily closed while DOC staff fully assess the damage and carry out some initial repairs. Some sections with extensive damage could be closed for some weeks. DOC is continuing to review the condition of the track and when parts might be able to be reopened.

WHIT W ELL’S for beds

Coming to the Chanel Arts Centre on Tuesday, 10 August as part of a New Zealand tour is a talented trio, Vieux Amis (old friends). And they really are old friends, reuniting to perform as a trio for the first time in over 20 years. James and Justine originally planned to tour with an Australian guitarist as a group called Les Voisins, but with the guitarist stuck in Sydney they invited Sarah to join them for this tour.

A carefully crafted programme that draws equally on the varied expertise of three of Aotearoa’s most accomplished chamber musicians: James’ exquisite baroque practice and Sarah and Justine’s shared experiences with NZTrio’s modern outlook.

A first half focused on J.S.Bach and Arvo P”art. Followed by Shostakovich’s muscular, invigorating second piano trio. A Shostakovich prelude and fugue stitch the two halves together. This tour is initially “Les Voisins”, French music throughout the centuries. With a play-

er stuck in Sydney, James and Justine “made lemonade” by inviting Sarah and putting together this superb musical event.

Vieux Amis (“Old Friends”) brings together 3 friends, neighbours, and long- standing colleagues. Violinist Justine Cormac, cellist James Bush and pianist Sarah Watkins all grew up together in Christchurch, and their bonds run deep.

James and Justine have remained close friends throughout their diverse careers.

Justine dedicated her energies to nurturing and promoting the best of New Zealand art and music through her performances with NZTrio.

James on the other hand, moved in completely the opposite direction, as his fascination with the freedom and energy of baroque performance practice led him to work with many of Europe’s top baroque orchestras and ensembles.

Sarah first teamed up with Justine when they were both in high school in Christchurch, playing chamber music together through the

CSIM. Their careers have been tightly intertwined ever since, most recently as founding members of NZTrio.

Sarah and James have also performed together through their careers - their first outings for CMNZ was as a duo in 1996 - and all three musicians have their first concert as a

trio in 1997.

Needless to say, they are thrilled to be back playing together for this very special CMNZ tour.

Tasman residents invited to help plan for Richmond’s transport growth

Tasman and Nelson residents are being asked for their feedback on an emerging programme of work that looks at ways to improve transport issues in rapidly growing Richmond – Tasman district’s largest population centre and one of the fastest growing.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and the Tasman District Council are working together on a business case to address Richmond transport needs over the next 30 years.

The Richmond Transport Programme Business Case (PBC) focuses on making Richmond a safer and more reliable place to travel around by offering everyone improved transport choices, whether you are driving, walking, cycling or taking the bus.

Waka Kotahi Director of Regional Relationships, Emma Speight says this PBC is an important step towards helping address current and future transport issues within and around the Richmond area.

“In recent years we have seen an increase in the amount of traffic and businesses using local roads within Richmond and an increase in commercial vehicles passing through to Nelson and freight going to the Port.

“The business case looks to address these issues, while ensuring the cycling and walking paths, roads, and public transport can deal with this growth, so Richmond is a more connected place that is easy to live in and travel around,” says Emma.

She acknowledged the current post-flood conditions in the wider region and surrounding hard-hit districts would be uppermost in people’s thoughts.

“However, we would like to ensure that people have time to consider and respond to these proposals, and are able to attend the workshops that start next week. Feedback is open until 13 August, and we encourage everyone

who lives, works and travels through the area to have their say over the next four weeks.”

Investigations have found that people in Richmond tend to rely on cars for short trips, and are choosing not to walk, bike or take a bus. Roads around Richmond’s shops, homes and schools are also congested, making it feel unsafe and unpleasant to walk or bike.

“The PBC is one of the steps towards getting funding for the projects and ensuring that the right transport solutions are identified. We are looking forward to hearing from the community to see what they think about what we are proposing,” says Emma.

“We are fulfilling an essential part of our growth planning by being part of this programme’s development,” says Tasman District Council’s Community Infrastructure Manager Richard Kirby.

“As we grow and evolve from being a rural support town not that long ago to being one of the fastest growing urban areas in the region, if not the country, we need to take account of the transportation choices available to people and the impact and needs of those choices in planning for denser communities.”

The PBC is aligned to national and regional transport strategies, and seeks to: Make Richmond’s roads safer for everyone.

Improve connections between streets, and build safe and attractive walking and cycling paths, helping make Richmond an even nicer place to live.

Help ensure journey times are more reliable for people and freight, particularly during busy times of the day. Make it easier for people to walk, bike or take different transport options to get to work and school.

The work completed on the PBC to date has identified an emerging programme of transport options that could be delivered over the short, medium

and long-term to deliver these outcomes.

Tasman District Council are also finalising or developing plans and strategies that align with the Richmond PBC. These include NelsonTasman Regional Public Transport Plan 2021-31; Tasman District Council Long

Term Plan 2021-31 and the Richmond and Motueka town centre parking strategy.

“The Council is currently developing a Walking and Cycling Strategy, a regional speed management plan and updating the District Plan. These will reflect the business case and we will carry

out separate public engagement on these plans and strategies in the near future,” says Richard.

Feedback on the Richmond Transport Programme Business Case is open until Friday, 13 August 2021.

Waka Kotahi and the Council are encouraging Tasman and Nelson residents to come and talk more about the project at community drop-in sessions:

Saturday 7 August, 9am - 2pm Connings Food Market, 151 McShane Road, Appleby Online feedback options and more information about the project can be found at www.nzta.govt.nz/richmondpbc

Friends of Flora are committed to conservation in the Wharepapa/Mt Arthur area

Friends of Flora or FOF as they are known, are a group of passionate community volunteers that are committed to conservation in the Wharepapa/Mt Arthur area. You may have already seen them in their orange high viz tops checking traps and carrying out monitoring of the flora and fauna of the area.

This year it’s their

20th birthday!!

FOF was founded by locals in January 2001, led by Maryann Ewers and Bill Rooke. After many years of tramping through the area they had noticed the decline of the birdsong and decided something had to be done and FOF came to be.

Since establishing a partnership with the Department of Conservation (DOC)

they have dedicated themselves to restoring the flora and fauna of the area.

Their volunteers walk 250kms and climb 13,000 metres every month to check the 2568 stoat traps they have installed in the area which covers 10,000 hectares to date.

With the ongoing predator control FOF has been able to reestablish whio (blue duck) in the Flora Stream area. From a single lonely male to approximately 26 breeding pairs. You may be able to hear the high pitch whistle of the male on your walks in the area.

Roroa (great spotted kiwi) is another of FOF successes with its reestablishment project being recognised in 2018 with the inaugural Kiwis for Kiwi, Tohu Tiketike ‘Kiwi Project of the Year’ award. The first roroa chick to be born in the Flora for decades was born in December 2012 and with the videos put on their Facebook page everyone could follow the adventures of the new arrival.

The Wharepapa/ Mount Arthur area is one of the most biodiverse areas in New Zealand. It supports at least seven species that occur nowhere else in the world, it has 24 different ecosystems, two of the deepest caves in New Zealand and has at least 88 species categorised as threatened or at risk.

As FOF celebrates its 20th Birthday and their successes they are looking towards their next 20 years. With the country looking at being predator free in 2050, they are always on the lookout for new volunteers or donations to enable them to continue their amazing work. If you would like to volunteer or make a donation please see their website (fof.org. nz) or find them on Facebook (friends of flora).

And if you happen to be walking or tramping in the Wharepapa/ Mount Arthur area and you see someone wearing bright orange hi viz do stop and say Hi, Happy Birthday and maybe Thank You.

Plenty of growth at MoTEC

MoTEC has set up a native plant nursery and an ecosourced seed bank at Parklands School.

This educational hub gives students the opportunity to learn about our natural world and sustainable native plant propagation using a variety of techniques. The nursery has been established with collaboration and funding from Tasman Environmental Trust,

Landcare Trust NZ, Tasman Bay Guardians and the Rata Foundation.

Mel Willmott runs Nurture - Nature, a programme for Year 5 & 6 students from the MoTEC Biotech room, which teaches native plant propagation, plant identification and the importance of plants. Native plants grown here by the students are used by the Moutere Catchment Project

- a project which aims to link local communities and improve the health of our waterways. This year, 540 year 7 & 8 MoTEC students from across the Tasman District will also have the opportunity to help propagate seedlings to support whanau, iwi, schools and local community organisations during Conservation Week (4th - 12th of September).

A Predator Free Community: The Gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park

Over the last few years a bunch of keen volunteers have created several different trapping networks covering sections of the coastline from Marahau to Kaiteretere.

Recently we have joined together with the hope of establishing a predator free corridor stretching from the Abel Tasman National Park boundary all the way through to Tapu Bay.

Sharing our statistics, with you and with each other, and connecting the separate groups will help us reach the predator free goal we are all working towards.

This is an ongoing process and as the saying goes “many hands make light work” so if there are any keen hands out there that would like to be involved please contact Chris at marahauhalo@gmail.com

Your local electricial geniuses

Electrical Worx Ltd began in 2017 after Daniel Knapp had sold his share of his previous Company. After popular demand Paul (Flash) and Daniel decided to join forces alongside Chris McIntosh. The original idea for the Company was to be a part time labour of love for them, none of them guessed, just how busy it would become.

Their company has been evolving, growing and solving our regions electrical issues ever since.

The wiring behind your walls is a complex lifeline and one which should only ever be tackled by a qualified electrician. The consequences of not doing so could very well mean that everything else goes up in smoke.

Electrical work is amongst the most dangerous jobs to undertake in the home or workplace. It’s reassuring to know the trusted team at Electrical Worx are here to help, keeping our community safer as a result.

Supporting our community

Community is important to Electrical Worx Ltd and they support a number of local community groupsMotueka Golf Club, Motueka Bowling Club, Motueka Power Boat Club, Motueka Yacht Club, Riwaka Croquet Club, Abbeyfield, ITM Riwaka Hunting and Fishing Competition and a number of community halls to name but a few.

Optimising soil health

Dr. Graham Sparling in his lecture to a packed theatre in 2004 stated, “It’s a sobering thought that our entire high-tech world is ultimately supported by life in the top 20cm of the soil.”

Dr Sparling, then a leading Landcare Research scientist, went on to say the soil biological process of denitrification is the only process whereby we can get reactive nitrogen from the soil and water back into benign nitrogen gas. In essence without a healthy functioning soil, civilization as we know it steadily unravels. Human health is only as good as the food we eat and that is dependent on soils functioning as they are designed to do.

The fact that excess nitrogen is entering groundwater is a sign that the filtering effect provided by soil held carbon is compromised and inputs must be reduced if further degradation is to be avoided. Although there is now a limit of 190kgN/ha/year of synthetic N able to be applied, that alone is unlikely to have a marked effect on the losses to groundwater, particularly in regions with shallow sandy soils.

The answer to the issue is increase the amount of carbon being sequestered and limit the quantity of synthetic N applied. Carbon is most rapidly sequestered under permanent grazed pasture provided the essential nitrogen component is supplied by the bacteria on the nodules of clover. Losses of N to groundwater can then be markedly reduced without limiting total farm output.

A key to a healthy functioning soil is its ability to breathe. Air needs to be able to enter freely and gases, primarily CO2 released. In an ideal state soils contain 25% air and 25% moisture with soil crumb dominating the top 20cm. Carbon dioxide being heavier than air stays close to the surface of the soil stimulating plant growth, and it is plants continuously in a rapid growth phase that have the greatest requirement.

In order to ensure plants are continuously growing grazing animals are required and their treading pressure rapidly incorporates dung and old root matter effectively and efficiently. During winter deep pugging during prolonged wet periods is best avoided, although whether it’s best to have a smaller mess over a larger area, or a larger mess in a confined area is debatable.

Blackened soil behind animals grazing crops is not necessarily a concern. When pasture is re-established either by direct drilling or after light cultivation there will be a net gain in soil carbon. Animal feet necessarily cause soils to compress. A healthy biologically active soil rapidly regains its natural form, and it is only when that doesn’t occur that compaction has occurred.

It’s often been stated that it’s not possible to change soil biology, however research here and overseas shows that not to be a fact. We know that the addition of lime to soil increases both the activity and number of benefi-

cial earthworms. Earthworms positively impact physical structures and where they proliferate there is a corresponding lift in the numbers of all other beneficial soil dwellers.

Lime also alters soil pH and a pH of close to 6.2 provides the environment where nutrient is most available for plant uptake. Golden Bay dolomite is a highly valuable resource, well known to intensive dairy farmers for its unparalleled ability to limit calcium/magnesium related disorders during spring.

Thirty years of experience indicates that unless soils are severely deficient a rate of 200kg/ha delivers outstanding results and it may be applied whenever practicable.

Dolomite is also a wellknown soil conditioner markedly improving water infiltration encouraging the recovery of soil damaged during winter. Applications of 500kg/ha or more calculated from soil tests and based on ‘balancing’ the soil are unlikely to provide a better outcome than 200kg/ha applied annually.

Livestock feed support available for flood-affected farmers

technical advice and wellbeing support.

“Several of these regions had been battling long-term drought prior to the floods which have put further pressure on feed supplies heading into calving and lambing,” said MPI’s director of Rural Communities and Farming Support Nick Story.

“We have ramped up support for farmers, including funding recovery coordinators and establishing a dedicated fund to help clear flood debris from paddocks in Canterbury.”

feed demand and get through the season.

“The important thing is that decisions are made early. Getting your plan down on paper can help give you peace of mind and provide clear direction.”

The Feed Planning Service can help farmers do a snapshot feed plan for the rest of winter and spring in as little as 20 minutes.

“Paddocks covered in silt won’t be growing any feed. Careful planning is needed to get that land back into production and growing pasture, or a crop to fill feed gaps,” said Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s South Island general manager John Ladley.

Flood-affected farmers in the South Island are being encouraged to make use of livestock feed support services funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

Widespread flooding across the Canterbury, West Coast, Tasman and Marlborough areas this winter has damaged pasture and caused losses to supplementary feed.

Since June, MPI has boosted feed support services and allocated more than $4.7 million for recovery grants,

MPI funds Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Federated Farmers, and other specialist providers to offer free, oneon-one feed planning support to livestock owners.

“Having a clear feed plan will be vital for many farmers to get through the next few months, identifying feed requirements to minimise animal welfare issues through a critical part of the seasonal calendar,” said DairyNZ’s South Island manager Tony Finch.

“The service supports farmers to calculate their feed demand and supply, investigate options to fill feed gaps and proactively make decisions. In some cases, dairy farmers may have to lease out cows in order to reduce

“A recovery plan for regrassing should use a mix of short-term and permanent pastures. Using all annual pastures could result in another feed pinch next year when pastures have to be renewed again.”

Farmers are encouraged to get flood-deposited silt covering paddocks tested, so the correct fertiliser can be applied.

MPI’s director of Animal Health and Welfare and veterinarian Chris Rodwell said grazing pasture coated with silt can cause animal health issues and careful management is needed.

“We know that animals can develop a range of poor health conditions from silt. Farmers are facing challenging conditions and we really encourage everyone who has concerns about the health of their animals to seek advice from their veterinarian.”

To get help from the Feed Planning Service, or to list or source feed or grazing through the Feed Coordination Service, farmers are encouraged to call 0800 FARMING (0800 327 646).

Farmers who need wellbeing support should contact their Rural Support Trust on 0800 RURAL HELP (0800 787 254).

New drive for strong wool profitability gaining impetus

New Zealand’s wool industry is entering an exciting new era of collaboration, innovation and consumerfocus to deliver game changing profitability to farmers, William Beetham says.

“We’re really pleased to see industry players work together to end fragmentation and concentrate on driving extra value from the superior attributes we all know that strong wool entails,” the Federated Farmers Meat and Wool Chairperson said. “I believe it’s all adding up to a new dawn for New Zealand strong wool.”

William pointed to recent initiatives, including:

-A proposed merger of two main farmer owned co-operatives (Wools of NZ - 730 farmers; Primary Wool Co-operative - 1,400 farmers), with the aim of an integrated supply chain. Farmers will vote on the idea in November but prior to then the Primary Wool Co-operative will become owner of CP Wool brokers by buying Carrfields’ 50% holding.

-The Wool Research Organisation of NZ (WRONZ) has just announced a world-class research initiative with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and development of unique wool particles, powders and pigments with global export potential for applications as diverse as cosmetics, printing, luxury goods and personal care.

-A joined-up farm assurance programme is underway, backed by 23 wool companies. The aim is to build systems to ensure a standard of supply and traceability that meets market expectations.

“We’re moving beyond selling our clip as a raw product as we look for high-value, branded consumer products that capitalize on strong wool’s natural, sustainable,

super-warm, fire-retardant, non-leaching, moisture and mould-resistant credentials,” William said.

The initiatives already mentioned come on the back of companies such as Cavalier-Bremworth, Big Save Furniture and Merino NZ championing strong wool, and the push into USA markets with branded wool product opportunities by the Strong Wool Action Group (SWAG).

“This progress is a culmination of advocacy by my predecessors, Federated Farmers Meat & Wool leaders such as Miles Anderson and Rick Powdrell, and also many other individuals, agencies and companies throughout the supply chain. I also acknowledge government investment and Minister Damien O’Connor, who has pretty much made this one of his key missions.

“I’m really buoyed by this determination to lift our game, tell the exceptional story of our wool’s provenance, and get better returns for New Zealand farmers.”

There’s a long road ahead to get to where everyone wants the strong wool industry to be and part of that is a commitment by farmers to meet assurance standards, William said. There also maybe a requirement for farmers to further invest in their industry.

“But when we get there the potential rewards are huge,” he added.

Motueka Netball Centre is preparing to celebrate their 75th Jubilee this month and they’d love more past and present netballers to join them, particularly on the evening of Saturday, 21 August.

With netball legends Leigh Gibbs and Shannon Saunders (nee Francois) the guest speakers, those attending are guaranteed to be entertained and inspired.

Leigh Gibbs forged a stellar career built on a demanding fitness regime and strong work ethic which were exemplified during her nine years as a Silver Fern, the last two as captain.

A consummate team player, Leigh had the ability to absorb constant pressure with minimal fuss and captained the 1987 team which is often described as the greatest New Zealand team of all.

Motueka born and bred Shannon Saunders is a no-frills type of player,

renowned for being a whole-hearted performer who can match it with the best through her dogged determination, relentless commitment and ability to execute. A Silver Fern in the 2019 winning world cup team, Shannon is currently contracted to the Southern Steel in the ANZ Championship. The evening, which kicks off at 5.30pm at the Moutere Hills Community Centre, is $65 per person including a meal, attendees are encouraged to get groups of ten together for a table, so grab your old team mates and head along for a night of fun.

A bar will be operating and free parking is available as well as a free courtesy shuttle offering rides back into Motueka at the end of the evening. While the popular covers band, Route 66, will have the Centre rocking into the night.

Team takes second place at Seddon Shield

The top twenty under 52kg rugby players from Golden Bay and Motueka made the trek to Westport from July 12-16 for the 85th Seddon Shield District Primary Schools rugby tournament under the watchful eye of longtime coach George Sturgeon.

The tournament was kicked off in 1934 by a group of primary school teachers and is now the only original existing representative rugby tournament left in New Zealand.

Golden BayMotueka’s first game was against the West Coast on Tuesday, where they led 24-7 at half time before running away with the win 41-22. Taydin Hill and Kyson Heal both scored two tries while their team mates Rei Pouri Lane, Tait Best and Flynn Simkin one each. George Aerakis supported the efforts with three conversions.

Wednesday they played Buller who led them at half time 26-12. Then managed to pull off a win 32-31 by “the skin of their teeth” says George. Ashley Stevens and Rei Pouri

Lane scored a try each while Kyson Heal and Jimmy Gilmer scored two a piece, with one of Kyson’s the match winning try right on full time. George Aerakis kicked a conversion.

Marlborough was their Thursday game and again they went into half time down 17-5. Digging deep the team came back and led 19-17 with one minute to go. “Then they bloody duffed it and let them in with a try so they beat us 24-19,” says George. Taydin Hill scored a try and Kyson Heal two with Harrison Johnston converted.

Following that game, Nelson, Marlborough and Golden BayMotueka were locked on 11 points.

Friday Nelson kicked off at 9.15am and at half time the score was 10-7, but in the second half “the wheels fell off” says George and Nelson stomped away with a 22-10 lead. Drew Baigent and Harrison Johnston both scored a try. With ten minutes left to play the decision was made to call the game off with the rain now tor-

rential.

Nelson and Marlborough shared first place honours of the tournament, while Golden-Bay Motueka took away a commendable second place.

All in all George says it was a successful tournament for the team and despite being a “bit green” in the backs, they had “the best forward pack of the tournament”.

“It was also the first time ever I’ve had three girls in my team and they all played well. Tayla Richards nearly made the tournament team and to me she should have got tackler of the tournament, she tackled everything!” says George.

The team’s captain Thomas McLean, Rei Pouri Lane, Taydin Hill and Kyson Heal were announced in the tournament team and Ashley Stevens and Fergus Jolly in the reserves.

“Despite the weather being a wee bit against we had a good tournament with what was all in all a good side,” says George.

LEAVING GREENWOOD HEALTH

To all my Patients, would like to thank you for the kind words and lovely gifts I received on my leaving Greenwood Health after 18 years as a GP in Motueka. Thank you all for the privilege have had of sharing your lives. It has been a pleasure being your doctor and have learnt much from you.

We are not moving away from Motueka so you might see me around on my ebike, on the tennis courts, at the bridge club, on the beach or in the sea. I am not heading for retirement yet and will be doing locum work in the Tasman/Nelson area and further afield, including the Chatham Islands.
