In the past several weeks, Aimex, which is located in Port Nelson, has been under scrutiny after it was fined $340,000 when a teenage apprentice was found unconscious in the engine room of a vessel where he was exposed to toxic chemicals.
The man, who was 19 at the time, suffered an anoxic brain injury after inhaling the fumes of a hydrocarbon-based degreaser which has left him unable to work since the July 2019 incident.

Bakers and animal lovers from all over Nelson put their aprons on for the annual SPCA Cupcake Day fundraiser on Monday. “Cupcake Day is just so important. The SPCA is only funded by donations, so things like this are really big for us,” says Nelson centre manager, Stef Bender. “There were hundreds of cupcakes - way more than we expected. Some of the volunteers just went above and beyond.” Cupcakes were sold for a donation at the centre on Waimea Rd, as well as at a stall on Trafalgar St. “We had volunteers manning the stand and then those who did all the baking - when I walked in on Monday morning we had a full table of cupcakes,” says Stef. Aimex Limited was sentenced on a charge of failing to ensure the health and safety of its employees by exposing an individual to risk of harm or illness, in the Nelson District Court. Aimex lawyer Brian Nathan said, following the incident the company had undertaken leadership changes, which showed how seriously the owners had taken it. Martin has worked in the wider Maritime sector in NZ, Australia and Fiji for more than 35 years across a number of areas, including operations.

During that time, Martin also served a period as a vice president of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH). Just half the number of usual participants took part, resulting in a major funding shortfall. SPCA chief executive Andrea Midgen says they require additional funding more than ever after the Government declined the inspectorate’s request for additional financial help in this year’s Budget. “It shouldn’t be this way, but unfortunately we have to rely on the generosity of New Zealanders to pay for the majority of our inspectorate costs. “We are so grateful for the support we receive and appreciate every single dollar.”
A 20-year-old has pleaded guilty to engaging in a sexual connection with a 14-year-old, a court has heard. According to the police summary of facts, the victim met defendant Kameran Clarke through the social media app Snapchat. He appeared in Nelson District Court on Monday. On an unspecified date in April 2021, the victim was at home with a friend when she messaged Clarke via Snapchat. She asked for him to give her and her friend a ride to Tāhunanui. The victim told Clarke that she would have sex with him if he picked them up. Clarke agreed, picking up the girl and her friend before taking them to McDonalds Tāhunanui. He dropped the victim’s friend at the McDonalds and drove the 14-year-old back to his flat, located a short distance away in Tāhunanui, where the pair went inside. Despite knowing the victim’s age to be 14, Clarke proceeded to remove his clothes and, as the summary of facts describes, had sexual intercourse
Kameran Clarke, 20, said he would give the victim a lift in his car in exchange for sex. Photo: File. with the complainant. Clarke admitted to police that he knew of the victim’s age before the encounter. He had asked the victim when she would be able to get her learners license, she responded that she could once she turned 16. According to police, Clarke was able to identify her current age as 14. Legally, the sexual connection between an adult and a minor is only viewed as rape or statutory rape when the act is nonconsensual, despite the age of
consent in New Zealand being 16. According to the Crimes Act 1961 section 134 (1), anyone who has a sexual connection with a young person is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years. On Monday, Clarke’s defence lawyer John Sandston announced the defendant would not be seeking further name suppression. Clarke will reappear for sentencing at Nelson District Court on September 15.

Woman traumatised after Saxton Reserve attack
Jonty Dine
A woman feared she would be “raped or worse” after a man knocked her down and dragged her into nearby bushes in Saxton Recreation Reserve last month. The woman was assaulted while walking through Saxton Recreation Reserve between nine and
9.30pm on Thursday June 24. The case featured on TVNZ’s Police 10-7 last Thursday night. The programme said the woman was on the phone to her husband and wearing headphones when the male approached her from the front. As she moved to let him pass, he attacked her and she fell to the
ground. The man grabbed her ankles and dragged her 12 metres into the nearby shrubbery. Here, he pulled down her pants as she screamed for help. The man paused temporarily, giving the woman enough time to kick him off her and escape. She contacted police who scoured
the area but were unable to locate the man. He is described as 175 cm or 5’9”, of medium build and had his face covered. Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney says the victim is deeply scarred as a result of the attack. “She is extremely traumatised by this, she feared she was going to be raped, or worse.”
Police are urging any members of the public who may have witnessed the assault or a man acting suspiciously in the area to call 105 and quoting file number 210625/4762. “The community will be horrified by this, and someone out there holds the key to solving this case,” says Mark.

With the Tokyo 2020 Olympics now in full swing, Nelson’s youngest aspiring athletes have competed in their own version of
the global games. Star Early Learning in Stoke held the ‘Star Olympics’ last week. Head teacher Casey Blake says they originally planned to do just one day of Olympic activities, but it proved so popular that they carried it on for the whole week.
“We set up the environment differently each day. We’ve had gymnastics, boxing, high jump, obstacle courses, trampolining, tennis, rings, skateboarding, and even a spectators lounge.” Shot put, discus, rugby, long jump into the sandpit, and javelin using
foam noodles also proved to be popular, as was a cycling race on the closed-off driveway. A throwback to the winter Olympics saw the bobsled make an appearance, too. “We’ve made an Olympic torch, and the kids have created their
own medals and decorated them with glitter and paint,” says Casey. She says the teaching staff and the children have been enjoying dressing up as different types of athletes. “The kids have loved it and enjoyed competing for medals.”

New parking system nets more than $1m Sara Hollyman Reporter
sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson City Council says there has been an increase in people paying correctly for their parking, a year after new payby-plate technology was introduced. Just over $923,000 of parking infringements were issued across Nelson in the year 1 July 2020 – 30 June 2021, in the form of nearly 14,000 tickets. However, only about $630,000 was actually recovered. Nelson City Council group manager infrastructure Alec Louverdis says although there were nearly 1000 more infringements issued this year, representing an extra $200,000 compared to last year, the change to pay-by-plate has been positive. He says the difference in infringements was due to lockdown when inner city businesses were all closed and a subsequent free parking initiative between April and June 2020. “We have had a very positive
New pay-by-plate technology proved to be a financial success for the council. Photo: File. response to the introduction of the pay-by-plate system. “The public has adapted very quickly, and we are now seeing an increase in the number of people paying correctly for their parking.” Alec says the new system has removed the ability for people to claim several free hours of parking in one day by simply moving their vehicle and using multiple free pay and display tickets. The Beauty Clinic Nelson owner, Stacey Annett, says she and some of her customers have
noticed that it’s now easier to find a park in both Montgomery and Buxton Car Park during the week. However, she says it remains difficult to find a space on CBD streets. Income from people paying for parking over the past year, after expenses, was $570,480, up from about $356,000 the previous year. The change to pay-by-plate has also seen a drop in parking meter maintenance and operations costs of $91,124 – a decrease from $242,611 in the 2019/20 year.

New initiative to connect communities Staff Reporter A new initiative aimed at connecting residents of the region with their communities has launched. Over the last two decades, there has been a growth in research findings that indicate the damaging effects of social isolation and loneliness on physical and mental health. To fight that trend, Wellby has brought together a range of organisations, including Volunteer Nelson and Age Concern Nelson Tasman. “At the core of this model is a community directory that lists organisations and services. The objective is to link people to a service they require or a community group that will provide social connection,” a spokesperson says. They say the effectiveness of Wellby lies in its simplicity and involves three elements – ‘Found Directory’ that lists about 1,300 organisations and services, ‘Talking Cafes’, which are an opportunity to talk face-to-face with people and find out what they are looking for, and a ‘Community Signposter’ who is able to reach people who are isolated and hard to contact. “Wellby is a learning organisation. It is always ready to try a new approach and is able to identify gaps in the community that may need to be addressed,” the spokesperson says. “It is built on the premise that everyone belongs.” Follow Wellby Nelson Tasman on Facebook for more information.

Helping Harry hear again Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
‘Happy’ Harry Beardshaw says he has enjoyed a lifetime of good luck, but recently suffered a great misfortune as he lost his hearing aid just moments after purchasing them. The 92-year-old Stoke resident had just replaced his old hearing aids with a modern pair at the cost of $3000. However, as he left Specsavers in Richmond on Wednesday July 21 at around 11.30am and headed towards ANZ Bank, one of the aids fell out on the way. It was only after he noticed he was having difficulty hearing the bank teller that he realised what was missing. Harry, with the assistance of a Specsavers worker, scoured the footpath but were unable to find the lost aid. One of his neighbours advertised the lost hearing aid in the Waimea Weekly but to no avail. “I thought I would buy myself a new pair to keep with the times and within minutes one fell out, but that’s life and I ac-

Aboard the ship, Harry fell in love with a woman who he successfully courted - thanks
in large part to his motorcycle. “I think that was a big advantage for me,” he jokes. With immigrants given no choice as to what city they would go to after arrival, the young lovers feared they would be separated. Thankfully, Harry was sent to Trentham while his future wife went to Silverstream, just four kilometres away, not that a greater distance would’ve
stopped Harry. “Even if she went to Invercargill and I went to Auckland, I would’ve run to her.” The couple moved to Nelson in 1999 and Harry still lives in the home they shared on Arapiki Rd. “I have had no bad luck, just a lifetime of happiness.” If you have any information regarding the lost hearing aid, please contact Harry on 03 547 2979.

Beaten by monster burger Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz Local gluttons are being given the chance to showcase their bottomless appetites in Burger Culture’s new eating challenge – all for a good cause. A 900gram burger is the latest addition to the menu for any brave souls willing to put their stomach to the test. You have 20 minutes to complete the $35 burger – if you do, it’s free. The challenge also doubles as a fundraiser with $10 from each sale going to either Big Brothers/Sisters or the Mental Health Foundation. The bohemian burger consists of three beef patties, two pieces of fried chicken, pulled pork, pulled lamb, a fried egg, pickles and sauce on a brioche bun. Unable to even wrap my hands around the monstrosity, I was forced to take
a more dignified approach and use a knife and fork to break down the beast. While the first few bites were enjoyable, it didn’t take long before the sweats came, and swallowing became a gamble. McDonalds for dinner probably wasn’t the best prep in hindsight.
“
They say it’s a lot of meat but it’s good, it’s a bit of fun, come and give it a go
“
With 15 minutes gone, I had barely made a dent in the mammoth meal and my defeat was imminent. After throwing in the napkin, I sat there, bloated, bitter and beaten. News that a teenager had conquered the meal in just 11 minutes further damaged my ego.
Promotion manager Zoe Williams says the idea has been cooking for a long time. “We have talked about doing a permanent food challenge for a while.” Zoe says the burger was originally much more manageable, but due to the high success rate they decided to add more meat and less time to eat it. “It started a lot smaller, but we just decided more, more, more, now it’s 900grams and you have 20 minutes to finish.” Since July 15, the restaurant has sold close to 50 burgers and is confident of reaching triple figures before the competition closes. “There is a 30 per cent fail rate so the odds are in your favour.” Zoe says feedback from customers has been fantastic and no one has thrown up yet. “They say it’s a lot of meat but it’s good, it’s a bit of fun, come and give it a go.”

Retirees reflect on 88 years at port Erin Bradnock Reporter
erin@nelsonweekly.co.nz
With a combined service of 88 years to Nelson port work, new retirees John Tregidga and Kevin Skelton still plan on spending their time on the water. The pair, a pilot and tug master respectively, both left their work at the end of March - after 44 years at the port. John. 72, says it was a long time coming. “I kept thinking one more year, one more year and finally, in March, I did it.” John grew up on the water, spending much of his youth living on the seas with his mother, father, brother and sister travelling through the Pacific. Nelson-born John joined the then Nelson Harbour Board in October 1976 as “a young fella” at the age of 28. Just two months into the job he earned his pilot's license, a process that these days would take up to a year to certify. John spent the coming years climbing up the sides of visiting ships and taking over to manoeuvre vessels safely in and out of the port.
Recent retirees Kevin Skelton and John Tregidga have seen their fair share of changes after working for a combined 88 years at Port Nelson. Photo: Erin Bradnock. “The job relied on local knowledge,” John says. In just four years, John became deputy harbour master of the board up until Port Nelson Limited was formed in 1988. The handover reflected the immense growth of the port, in 1945 the throughput tonnage was recorded at 150,000 tonnes with a jump to 1.2 million tonnes by 1984. “Things just became more of a business than a service,” says
John. He then went on to form his own business, Tasman Bay Maritime Pilots, which he ran from 1990 all the way through to 2008. Kevin, a tug master, joined the Harbour Board in November 1976, where he was originally working as a boat builder. Kevin was born in Greymouth and headed to Nelson fresh out of school, looking for work. “Otherwise, I would’ve been a coal miner, a fisherman or work-
ing on the railways,” he says. Not long after his start, Kevin was offered the role of a relief deckhand, in 1978. There he worked on the very boat he had helped build. “I was just in the right place at the right time,” he says. At 30-years old, Kevin was thought to be the youngest skipper in the country and would continue to work as a tug master for 37 years, forming his own company, Nelson Tug Services,
RSV stretches ambulance services
Jenny Nicholson
Local ambulance services are being stretched to capacity as St John works to deal with an increase in demand of almost 17 per cent over the last two months. St John South Island region communications advisor, Gerard Campbell, says
demand is high across the country, with a week in early July being the highest St John has ever seen. “While high demand over winter is not unusual, the current call volumes are well above what we would expect during this period." Gerard says that this is due, in part, to the number of patients with respiratory illnesses, including Respiratory Syncy-
tial Virus (RSV), but also a general increase in other incidents. He says the increased demand is impacting both their 111 communications centres and their ability to respond and warns callers may experience a delay before their call is answered. Airport firefighting veteran blitzes Sky Tower Staff Reporter Nelson Airport Fire Rescue Service team member Murray Hart has proven that he is not a man to back down from a challenge by winning his age group in the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge in Auckland. The Stair Challenge, which this year raised nearly $1.4 million for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand, is a world-famous event with nearly 1000 firefighters competing - and is definitely not for the faint-hearted. At 328 metres, the Sky Tower is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. It has 1103 steps and for the Challenge the firefighters wear up to 25kg of breathing appa-

“It definitely worked conditioning my body and I was lucky enough to go on and win.” Murray, along with friend and colleague Steve Johnson, have provided rescue and safety services at Nelson Airport for over 36 years. “Nelson Airport’s staff and customers are lucky to have such a skilled and capable Fire Rescue Service team to deal with emergency situations,” says James Middlewick, Nelson Airport’s airfield and safety manager. “Murray and Steve’s dedication to the job over such a long period of time speaks volumes for the Service’s professionalism and we all congratulate Murray on his recent stairclimbing achievement.”

He jokes that back in their day they learned on the job and that he "bluffed" his way through the rest. They reminisced on the old days, before training simulators and life jackets. “They used to let our kids come aboard in the school holidays, playing hide and seek through the boat. We’d have Christmas parties on the boats too,” says Kevin. Since retiring, John says he’s been keeping busy with jobs around the home but hopes he and wife Jude can make their way to Adelaide to visit the grandkids. Meanwhile, the family boat sits in Havelock waiting for the good weather. Kevin has two boats, one he’s lived on for about eight years. Now, two of his three sons are also working on the water. With some winter work lined up for him in Vanuatu as a training officer, Kevin hopes for more time with family in Samoa. “I’m looking at getting a home up north so I can be closer to them,” he says.

Photo: Erin Bradnock. turned on its head. “I got to five years – the magic number. Once you get there, you have a party. You dust yourself off and pick up your life again.” Anna says she was in the process of returning to work and then suddenly everything changed. “All the plans I made had to go on the back burner. You drop everything and just live for every day.” When her theatre friends heard about her diagnosis, they decided to put their skills into action to fundraise for her to enjoy the time she has left with her family, a 10-year-old daughter and 19-year-old son. Performers including dancers, singers, comedians and magicians from across the region are putting on a show for Anna’s ‘Laughing at Cancer Cabaret’ this Friday, 6 August, at the Playhouse Theatre in Mapua. Half the proceeds from ticket sales will go to Anna and the other half will go to Nelson Hospice. “For them to be doing this for me and for the hospice is so awesome and touching,” says Anna. “I’m overwhelmed, I’m not used to people fussing over little old me.” This is the third ‘Laughing at Cancer’ event organiser Rachel Yerbury-Wilson has put together. She started the cabarets about eight years ago when her friend, Cormac, was going through brain cancer treatment. “Cormac’s way of getting through it was laughing and smiling and dark humour. “That’s where the laughing at cancer tagline came from,” says Rachel. The schools here sweep it all under the carpet anyway. Nigel Intemann Schools do lots of great work in this regard and a lot of staff time is spent on behaviour management. Children are continually given good messages, tools and modelling at school about acceptable behaviour, but ultimately poor behaviours are learnt and effectively supported by parents outside school life. Outcomes would be better if parents supported schools. Tracey Aindow Glad we grew up without social media. Keri Williams Upcycling jewellery for women in need: Great mahi, Rachel. Tami Neilson takes to the Arts Fest stage
New book for young adults: ‘Flint and Fern: The Karma of the Condor’ is a futuristic novel to help young readers visualise a positive world – one of peace. It’s an adventure story written by a local Chinese Medicine specialist called ‘Gideon’. Nelson locals are welcome to come and meet the author between 12pm and 1pm at the Elma Turner Library on August 5. The pages of the self-published book are printed on a special type of limestone, giving it a heavy quality that Gideon says matches the gravitas of its content. Gideon says that he hopes to write a series out of the books, depending on its success. He is now looking for feedback from young readers to see what they like about the story. Nelson Weekly also has a free copy to give away to one lucky reader, email editorial@nelsonweekly. co.nz to put your name into the draw.
Award-winnning Tami Neilson will perform a rich songbook of country classics. Photo: Mrs Jones.
Staff Reporter Come along to The F Word and you can expect a barnstorming night of music and song, but be warned, you might learn a few things as well. This is Tami Neilson and her band at full force, alongside some hard-hitting storytelling with stats and facts about women in country music. The award-winnning Tami performs a rich songbook of country classics. Neilson’s songs are bold, brassy, finger-snapping and up-tempo. They’re what CBC Music
claimed as “rousing and vibrant like thunder and lightning”. Tami says The F Word is about the role of feminism in country music. “Country music is known for being a particularly conservative genre,” she says. “It just didn’t progress like other music genres. The whole infrastructure of country music is around what radio stations play, which means that there are a small number of gatekeepers, mostly men, who determine that women still only make up 10 per cent airplay.” People coming to the show
might expect the inequality and sexism in the 1940s and 1950s, but they’re shocked to hear that it still continues today. As recently as 2015, one of the leading country music magazines, Aircheck, published an article by Keith Hill, who advised “if you want to make ratings in country radio, take females out”. Neilson grew up in country music, performing and touring across Canada and North America with the Neilson Family Band, working alongside greats such as Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker,
and Kitty Wells. Neilson created The F Word to acknowledge and celebrate the female greats in country music, and to inspire the next generation. The show has a little bit of enlightenment, and a whole lot of singing, with Neilson performing songs by Dolly Parton, Dixie Chicks, KD Land and Beyonce, as well as some of her own cracking numbers. Tami Neilson, The F Word is on at the Nelson Arts Festival, Theatre Royal, Saturday 30 October. Tickets on sale Friday 6 August at www.nelsonarts festival.nz

With 15 shows in total, Jane says it has been three years in the making for the company and they are thrilled to finally bring the musical to Nelson for the first time with the help of principal sponsor, NBS. “We had plans to produce it last year, but it was obviously canned because of Covid-19. Every entry is marked out of possible 2,000 points which are granted for workmanship, design, style and functionality. Award winning properties will receive either a gold, silver, or bronze award.

Stonewood Homes Nelson Stonewood Homes Nelson, which is owned by Brent and Tara Stewart, was named winner of the New Home up to $450,000 category and a gold award for a home in Richmond. The judges said: ‘This home may be compact, but it’s been exceptionally designed and is well positioned for the sun. The generous kitchen sits in the centre of the house and features a full wall of immaculate herringbone tiles enhanced by beautiful floating shelves. The workmanship on the doors, trims, fixtures, and painting are of a high standard throughout.’ Think a brand-new home with character touches is out of reach? Or a place that has all the bells and whistles? You might want to think again. Although this three-bedroom property is only 160sqm, it has everything you’d see in a much larger home. Step inside and you’ll find a main bedroom with ensuite and a walk-in wardrobe; a kitchen that ticks all the boxes, including a walk-

in pantry; two living spaces; and double garage. Everywhere you look are details that set this place apart. Imagine closing the shutters, running a bath and settling in for a long, relaxing soak in the main bathroom. It’s a calm, attractive space thanks to beautiful tiling. The kitchen – the point from which the living room, lounge and dining room flow, packs a stylish punch. White herringbone tiles contrast with deep-blue cabinetry and light fixtures above the breakfast bar add wow factor. The lounge, a serene space in
muted hues, opens directly onto a private deck. Outside, the house with its gables, metal-tile roof and tidy kerbside appeal, looks as if it has always belonged on its patch. Stonewood Homes Nelson also won a silver award in the GIB Show Home category. Walk through this beautifully crafted show home and you’ll instantly appreciate why great design is so important to relaxed family living. The 220sqm pavilion-style house is expertly planned to accommodate everyone. At its heart – in the centre of one of the two wings – is the striking kitchen

and butler’s pantry. On one side is the sun-drenched dining/living area, on the other is the lounge. In the second wing, you’ll find three spacious bedrooms and a family bathroom, plus the main bedroom with ensuite and walkin wardrobe. Because the house is H-shaped, rooms open up to a central, private decked area. It’s modern, easy living at its best. The smarts in the design are also evident in the styling. The interior, in earthy and subdued tones, are given punches of colour, such as the rich blue in one of the bathrooms.
The designer kitchen, in wood and charcoal, has a striking splashback and bench. Doubleglazed aluminium joinery sits comfortably with the exterior claddings – a mix of battened panels and clay-brick veneer. A double garage tops off this easy-to-love, easy-to-live-in home. Brent and Tara also own Stonewood Homes Blenheim, which brought home a silver medal for a lovely home in Witherlea. Stonewood Homes deliver unmatched value and quality in their builds, and experience that’s second-to-none.
The team at Milestone Homes are delighted to have received a Gold award and Category win at the recent Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast House of the Year Awards 2021. This was the first time Milestone Homes Nelson have contested these awards and entered a Richmond Home in the ‘Volume Builder up to $450,000’ category. Although confident in the quality of their entry they were not expecting to be recognised as the highest scoring home in their category which contained 4 other beautiful homes. General Manager Adam Hills commented “This award is recognition for the whole team involved – from office staff ensuring the paperwork and plans are perfect, through to the Project Management team ensuring everything runs smoothly and is completed to the highest standard. You Build Matt and Janine Thomas, owners of You Build, along with their dedicated team and amazing subbies have worked hard to create an incredible home for their clients and are still buzzing with the recognition of this build at the Registered Master Builders 2021 House of the Year Awards. This Kaiteriteri build not only won a Gold award, it also took away the Regional Category award for the Carters New Home $1 Million – $1.5 Million, and the Regional Lifestyle Kitchen Award. Just a short walk from Kaiteriteri Beach sits the striking architecturally designed 136sqm home, plus garage. The eye-catching form is tailored to the section and the roofline is designed to provide respite from heat in summer and shelter from the elements in winter. But what it also provides are the prerequisites for an astonishing deck, which runs the length of the building and pushes into a recess, effectively forming an outdoor room. The owners can throw open the doors, hit
the deck and relax all-year round. Step through the front door and take a left into the breezeway that separates living and sleeping zones, then flows to an open-plan area. In the latter you’ll find a kitchen made from hard-wearing materials that invite big family gatherings. Negative-detail plylined ceilings in the living area add warmth and flair and extralarge stackers create indoor-outdoor flow. Take a right from the breezeway and you’ll come across the bathrooms and bedrooms, one of which is a bespoke bunk room. The cladding on this remarkable beach home will natu-
rally weather to silver, blending in with the landscape. Judges were obviously impressed and commented: “This architecturally impressive home is designed around the angle of the site with a roof that provides shade in summer and lets the sun in during the winter months. The builder overcame challenges with over one hundred 9.0m driven piles for the foundation and accurately built the complex structure with obtuse angles and raking ceiling lines. The outside adobo cladding has been fitted with precision and the screens were carefully installed.
The angled ply-lined ceilings in the living area and oak flooring have also been beautifully fitted. This house may have had its challenges, but the builder excelled and completed it to a very high standard.” When it came to explaining why this particular home was the winner in the Regional Lifestyle Kitchen Excellence Award, here’s what the judges had to say: “This beautifully crafted kitchen is functional and well designed for family living. There is great indoor-outdoor flow between the inside and outside living areas of the house. Light has been cleverly
introduced to the space from a high-level window which is set within the accurately constructed and installed cabinets. The kitchen features hidden handles in the plywood doors and drawers, as well as concealed lighting which adds ambiance to this beautiful space.” You Build owners Matt and Janine are a dynamic duo with a modern and fresh view to house renovations and new builds, embracing quality and innovation, and combining their building experience with good communication and a personal approach. From concept to completion, it’s all about YOU!
Jennian Homes Nelson Bays is known for building custom design homes for its clients. Once again, the company has proven its capabilities at the recent Nelson Marlborough West Coast Master Builders 2021 House of the Year competition, achieving five significant awards. Jennian won the New Home $450,000 $600,000 category, receiving a gold award for a home in Richmond, which offers the ‘Best of Both Worlds.’ The judges praised the design and build: ‘This home has been designed to be in keeping with the built environment. The layout is well designed for family living and entertaining and the cladding has been very well detailed. The doors, windows and joinery have all been carefully installed, and the floor coverings, plastering and painting is also of a very high standard. Overall, this is a very well-designed house.’ The owners wanted their new home to be in keeping with other homes in their established neighbourhood. So, after they

removed the old house, the design team came up with a replacement that mixed plaster weatherboard cladding with features such as character window detailing and traditional rooflines. These created a feeling of yesteryear – but with convenience of the latest products, innovations and building techniques. Jennian also won a gold award for Volume/Group Housing New Home up to $450,000 for a compact, stylish home in Stoke that had a challenging site to build on. They also received a silver award in the same category, for a warm, sunny open plan home in Richmond. Jennian Homes Nelson Bays also achieved a silver award for Altus Windows Systems New Home – $750,000 – $1million. This modern, luxurious home has architectural touches, and it maximises the surrounding views.
Mike Greer Homes are proud to be consistent multi award recipients in the Master Builder House of the Year Awards, this year being recognised as both Regional Category Winners and Gold Awards for homes in Marlborough and Nelson. Specialising in homes that are refreshingly different, warm, inviting and finished with genuine flair, the annual awards are an acknowledgement of the hard work that goes into every home they design and build. Their show home in Blenheim is a deserving winner of the Regional Category Award in the GIB Show Home Category together with a Gold Award. Judges comment that “the home features a quality design which prioritises functional family living and entertaining. Winter sun pours into the living room and a central north facing covered outdoor area is ideally positioned to enjoy alfresco outdoor living and this well-built and aesthetically pleasing house is one that the builder and
homeowner can be proud of. In Stoke their modern, classic home was awarded the Regional Category Award, together with a Gold Award in the Volume/Group Housing New Home $450,000 - $750,000 category. Combining a smart exterior, commanding street presence, and rural views with clever design on the inside, judges noted that this sunny home has been cleverly designed to make the most of open plan living. The lounge opens to the covered alfresco area, while the dining room has access to the rear garden with views to the West. Mike Greer Homes would like to thank the homeowners, staff and sub-contractors who were involved with these builds. Without their help they wouldn’t be able to provide homes to these exacting standards.

Customer Review: Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Value. It has taken me far too long to give a giant thumbs up to this company. The owners and people who work here are quite simply outstanding. Every single time my wife and I have had repairs carried out or purchases made, we are made to feel like their friends, we are kept informed, nothing is too much trouble or too hard and to top-it-off, the work is outstandingly superior, and the costs are very fair. I strongly and highly recommend Tyres & More for any servicing or repairs needed.

The All Blacks Sevens fell just short in its bid for Olympic gold, losing to Fiji in the men’s sevens final in Tokyo. Fiji raced out to a 12-0 lead and stayed ahead for the full 14 minutes, claiming back-to-back gold medals with the 24-12 victory. Tasman playmaker Andrew Knewstubb was prevalent for New Zealand as he had been throughout the tournament, as the All Blacks won a silver medal for the first time in history. Andrew says it’s been a whirlwind ever since that final whistle. “I’m pretty knackered, we ended up celebrating the last five years of hard mahi even though it wasn’t how we wanted to end it.” He says he is incredibly proud to be part of the team. “I will always remember these

other Olympics, but the next goal is the Commonwealth Games and sevens World Cup.” Andrew’s role in the side was not limited to on the field. The former Kahurangi utility was also tasked with carving a mere or patu for the team to take to Tokyo. The team would hold the mere aloft in a huddle prior to kick off. Andrew says his father dabbled in the craft and taught him how to create the traditional Māori hand weapon. “Normally, we only bring it out for the final, but every game was a final for us at the Olympics.” He says the mere tells the story of the connection between the team, its whānau, and its whenua. “Small marks are made on the side of the mere which came from our loved ones.” The mere will be presented to the best defender of the year and that player will keep the taonga forever.
Richmond AFC has leapfrogged FC Nelson on the division one football table after leaving Guppy Park with a 3-1 upset victory on Saturday. A week on from its stunning 4-0 rout of competition leaders Rangers, FC could only manage a single goal against the revitalised Richmond side. FC had two golden opportunities to open the scoring, but keeper Dan Dowding was up to the task with some impressive saves. Thang Thang Vanuk eventually put his side on the board in the 35th minute. He danced around the Richmond
defence before thundering the ball it into the back right corner of the net. Fergus Griffin pulled one back for Richmond moments later as he found an open goal in front of him and made no mistake, levelling the scores with five minutes remaining in the half. Richmond took the lead five minutes into the second as Max Duncan put it on a platter for Max Squire with a precision cross which Squire duly hammered home. Ben McLean made it 3-1, leaving FC with a tough task in the final twenty.
With FC opting for all-out attack, it left plenty of opportunities at the other end of the pitch for Richmond. Alex Ward had a shot at putting it beyond doubt but couldn’t connect with a cross and sent it sailing over the crossbar. Dowding was kept busy in the closing stages as FC desperately tried to stage a comeback, but the defence held firm and Richmond claimed its eighth win of the season. Elsewhere, Rangers bounced back from its defeat with a 2-1 victory over Motueka in Marlborough while Suburbs Development hammered FC Locomotive 4-1.
Nelson College hit top form ahead of playoffs Jonty Dine Nelson College has sent an ominous message to its rivals during the side’s last appearance at home ahead of the Miles Toyota Championship semi-finals in two weeks’ time. Nelson ran in 13 tries against Mid Canterbury in a dominant display on Saturday to secure the home advantage for the playoffs. Winning 83-19 and with a 45-5 halftime scoreline, coach Jono
Phillips took the opportunity to give some of the wider squad members plenty of minutes. “We had a few boys getting caps today, so it was awesome for them to get a bit of game time,” says Nelson College captain Ollie Inch. The win leaves Nelson in second place, four points clear of Timaru and four shy of St Bedes. Tuterangi Stone-Williams and Timoci Sauira each bagged hat-tricks in
standout performances while Cooper Grant had a brilliant day with the boot. Several players had standout days, including, Hunter Leppien, flanker Jake Burridge and Netani Baleisomosomo who exploded into action, scoring a spectacular solo try. Elsewhere, Waimea Combined picked up its third win of the season to move into 11th spot after defeating Lincoln 37-17 at Nayland College.

The final phase of the NBS Nelson Premier Netball Competition got underway at Saxton Stadium on Thursday with defending champions Prices Ahurei holding off a stern challenge from Richmond45. Coming off a two-week break, Prices re-established the dominance they have shown in the first two phases of competition, dropping just a single game. Prices was looking to avenge its only loss of the season, a one-goal loss to Jacks in the previous round and the back-to-back champs bounced back with a hard fought 41-29 win. The opening period was proving a tight affair before Prices imposed its influence, particularly on defence. Shar Lowe and Chelsea Reed were combining beautifully, and the pair went on a six-goal streak to
SportS Harriers: Weather and underfoot conditions were excellent for the 108 participants in the ‘Waimea Harriers Sprig & Fern 10km Run and Walk’ around the streets of urban Richmond on Saturday, 31st July. However, the course which started in the Bill Wilkes Reserve, provided many challenges for competitors as having just recovered from one uphill
close the first as Prices took a 12-4 lead. Prices started the second in similar fashion, keeping Richmond scoreless for almost ten minutes with defenders Holly Chandler and Shannen Smith ruthless inside the circle. Tiare Morehu finally broke the shackles for Richmond, but Prices kept them at bay, a shot on the buzzer giving them a 21-12 lead. Harriet Ogilvie switched to goal shoot for the third, while Richmond’s Natalie Fullman was prominent off the bench up against her old side. Richmond made the better start to the final fifteen, but Prices soon took its lead back past ten with Shar shouldering the majority of the shooting. It would prove the most profitable quarter for Richmond with 11 goals, but the damage had already been done and despite losing Tuihana Kinita late through injury, Prices started the final phase in perfect fashion. section, they were faced with yet another hill ahead of them. Matt Bowen was the fastest of the runners, coming home in a very credible time of 35.48 mins, while Angela Leck was the first woman in 43.24 mins. Steve Pauling led the walker’s home in 1.09.15hrs, with Tania Gardiner the fastest woman, close behind in 1.09.25hrs. Saturday’s event was the first of four very popular 10km races based at Sprig and Fern Taverns around the region.
