Flooded farmers take on TDC Jenny Nicholson Reporter

Tasman farmers are taking their frustrations over flood repair
payments to the Tasman District Council. A stalemate resulted over costs of repairs on one Tapawera farm following the recent floods. Farmer David McGaveston has
asked the Tasman District Council to pay for repairs to his farm, saying that their failure to remove sufficient gravel from the river led to the severity of the flooding damage.
“They need to fund the repairs,” he says. “They let the river get to this stage and we have been asking them to remove gravel for a long period of time.” He says there are strong feeling
about the issue among farmers. “We worked a plan, but the council won’t fund it.” David says. “So, the work’s not done. It’s

Rebuilding after fire tears through home Jenny Nicholson Debbie Apera was taking a break from cleaning up paddocks after Tasman’s recent flooding, when her house went up in flames. While she and her partner had lunch last Tuesday, they started up the motorbike to give it a run, and something exploded. With accelerants all around, the fire engulfed her place and part of her daughter’s attached home. She has lost almost everything in her Pretty Bridge Valley home including her treasured grandmother’s rings. The one thing of true value that is smoke damaged but still able to be rescued are old photos. A television fell over the cabinet holding the photos, keeping them from burning. A woman feared she would be ‘raped or worse’ after a man knocked her down and dragged her into nearby bushes in Saxton Recreation Reserve last month. The woman was assaulted while walking through Saxton Recreation Reserve between nine and 9.30pm on Thursday June 24. The case featured on TVNZ’s Police 10-7 last Thursday night. The programme said the woman was on the phone to her husband and wearing headphones when the male approached her from the front. As she moved to let him pass,

escape. She contacted police who scoured the area but were unable to locate the man. He is described as 175 cm or 5’9”, of medium build and had his face covered. Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney says the victim is deeply scarred as a result of the attack. “She is extremely traumatised by this, she feared she was going to be raped or worse.” Police are urging any members of the public who may have witnessed the assault or a man acting suspiciously in the area to call 105 and quoting file number 210625/4762. “The community will be horrified by this, and someone out there holds the key to solving this case,” says Mark.
FRoM PAGE 1 children are less sure on the extent of damage. While the bathroom and kitchen were affected most, water and smoke damage to the rest of the home means they won’t know if it will be a rebuild or renovation job for about six weeks. But in the meantime, they were left with just the clothes they were wearing. For Samantha, once she heard her mother was okay, her concern turned to the animals. Two of the dogs had run back into the house onto her bed, but they were rescued and all were accounted for except her son’s cat Lulu. He was inconsolable until he got the news that his cat had returned and was fine. “No people were hurt. No animals were hurt,” says Sam. “It’s just a house and it can all be replaced.”
She says they wouldn’t be as calm if pets had been hurt. “It’s all about mindset and I have incredible people in my life,” she says. “The kind words have been the best gift anyone could give.” Samantha wants to thank the ten fire crews who attended the fire and says it really brought home the importance of having full cover insurance. Because they had that in place, it’s another worry they don’t face. Friends and colleagues have put care parcels together and have given clothes, which they have all very much appreciated. With insurance companies and tradies busy following the floods, Samantha knows it may take a little more time to sort their house. But she’s ok with that. The next step is to find a home for her mum, as at present there are six adults and four dogs in the place they are staying.

While 2,000 cubic metres was removed, David says that there needs to be 15 to 20,000 removed. Stock banks were wiped out on his farm and there was about half a hectare eroded from his horticultural flats. “That can be repaired, but it has to be now.” David says they are not prepared to pay for it. TDC communications and change manager Chris Choat says that there had been significant rain in the catchment, and council was “reviewing damage and responding to [the flood]
says that as soon as heavy rain comes it chops into the road which means some customers can’t access her property. “If we have no money we can’t pay our rates,” she says. “I don’t get services for rates anyway.” TDC’s community infrastructure transportation manager Jamie McPherson says work will be done on the road as soon as possible. “First priority is ensuring all properties have some form of access for obvious welfare purposes, followed by restoring road conditions back to normal standard.” He says that this will likely take a couple of weeks. “The assessment of Pretty Bridge Valley Road confirmed that access is available, but we acknowledge that for a short time it will not be up to the usual standard.”

Gravel extraction is likely to be one of the tools they will use but Chris says that alone will not be able to eliminate erosion or flooding in events of this scale. Community comes together to save Wairoa Gorge Bike Park
Helping Harry hear again
Erin Bradnock
Reporter
Nelson Mountain Bike Club have launched a fundraiser to get Wairoa Gorge Bike Park reopened after a landslip blocked off access last fortnight. The club is looking to raise $50,000 for assessments and repairs for the estimated 500-800m2 of earth left blocking access to the park. Volunteer Eddie Westrupp was one of three Wairoa Gorge Bike Park volunteers at the scene when the slips came down on Saturday 17 July. “The big slip happened while we were doing some work up on the hill, checking the drainage while it was raining,” he says. Eddie and his fellow volunteers were left separated from the cars trapped in the car park above. “When we saw it, we thought ‘crikey’. We went down the hill across the river and thought, ‘guess we’re staying the night’,” he says. Thankfully, the trio got out safely after moving some boulders and rubble, but they have had to leave their cars behind. He describes the slip as 5km

Eddie has been coming to the gorge once a week, every week for the past year. Wairoa Gorge Bike Park operations manager Greg McIntyre says the wet weather from last week has worsened conditions at the park. “There’re more mudslides
and debris on the road, I couldn’t get any further up there,” he says. He says it won’t be a cheap fix for the not-for-profit team. “Being a club, we rely on a lot of volunteers to groom our trails. “This is way bigger than what we can handle. We’ve talked to contractors and have found people who will go in and clear it, but we don’t have the money.” Greg says responsibility for
the park falls on the Nelson Mountain Bike Club team, the land being gifted by the club to the Department of Conservation in 2016. Nelson Mountain Bike Club manager Belinda Crisp was the one to make ‘Clear the Slip!’ Givealittle page on Monday. “After the slip, we started doing some investigating and looking at our options to see if any subsidies or government funding would be available,” she says. Belinda says she’s contacted numerous government agencies and Tasman District Council to get the road back open, but says even if there was something available it would take months to get off the ground. “The community have been the main people to come forward, offering their services from geotechnicians, digger and truck drivers. We’re trying to ask as widely as we can.” Belinda says, if funding allows, the slip debris would be screened and made into roading material and spread on the Gorge Rd. The Givealittle has more than $4000 of donations. “We have a long way to go.”

‘Happy’ Harry Beardshaw says he has enjoyed a lifetime of good luck but recently suffered a great misfortune as he lost his hearing aid just moments after purchasing them. The 92-year-old Stoke resident had just replaced his old hearing aids with a modern pair at the cost of $3000. However, as he left Specsavers in Richmond on Wednesday July 21 at around 11.30am and headed towards ANZ Bank, one of the aids fell out on the way. It was only after he noticed he was having difficulty hearing the bank teller that he realised what was missing. Harry, with the assistance of a Specsavers worker, scoured the footpath but were unable to find the lost aid. One of his neighbours advertised the lost hearing aid in the Waimea Weekly but to no avail. “I thought I would buy myself a new pair to keep with the times and within minutes one fell out, but that’s life and

Aboard the ship, Harry fell in love with a woman who he successfully courted - thanks

With immigrants given no choice as to what city they would go to after arrival, the young lovers feared they would be separated. Thankfully, Harry was sent to Trentham while his future wife went to Silverstream, just four kilometres away, not that a greater distance

They are planning Wednesday evening clinics from 5.30 to 8.30pm. To avoid waste, the pharmacy will keep a list of back up people to call if any vaccine is left over. New initiative to connect communities Staff Reporter A new initiative aimed at connecting residents of the region with their communities has launched. Over the last two decades, there has been a growth in research findings that indicate the damaging effects of social isolation and loneliness on physical and mental health. To fight that trend, Wellby has brought together a range of organisations, including Volunteer Nelson and Age Concern
Nelson Tasman. “At the core of this model is a community directory that lists organisations and services. The objective is to link people to a service they require or a community group that will provide social connection,” a spokesperson says. They say the effectiveness of Wellby lies in its simplicity and involves three elements – ‘Found Directory’ that lists about 1,300 organisations and services, ‘Talking Cafes’, which are an opportunity to talk face-
to-face with people and find out what they are looking for, and a ‘Community Signposter’ who is able to reach people who are isolated and hard to contact. “Wellby is a learning organisation. It is always ready to try a new approach and is able to identify gaps in the community that may need to be addressed,” the spokesperson says. “It is built on the premise that everyone belongs.” Follow Wellby Nelson Tasman on Facebook for more information.

Works have started on the garden renovation at Pinnacle House, Richmond. The charity, which provides a day service to individuals with very high special needs, is getting a concrete area put in with plantings and a potential water feature. Asphalt & General offered to do the groundworks for free to support the organisation. Linda Gill, manager for Pinnacle House, says that they couldn’t function without community support. “For people to donate their own time and absorb the cost is incredible,” says Linda. She says it will make such a difference for them to have a usable space for wheelchairs in all weathers. The charity is also using proceeds from the fashion show they held earlier in the year to purchase a shade sail for the garden. Photo: Jo Kent.
Waimea boys’ business win takes the cake Jenny Nicholson Reporter

When teacher Yvonne Daly offered home baking if students competed in a national business competition, she couldn’t have known her boys would win. Waimea College’s year 13 students Macgregor Jones, Finn Griffith, Luis Schneider, and Daniel Blight recently won the National Secondary School Case Competition, a business case competition run by Auckland University. During both rounds of competition, the students were given a business case to analyse and present a financially-plausible plan for the following 10 years. Of the four boys, only one takes all three subjects related to the competition - business, accounting,
and economics, with Luis taking none. “Dad is heavily involved in international export, and I learned a lot from him,” says Luis. The boys say they are good friends and able to work well together, listening and taking on each other’s ideas. “I like to think my brain is logical, but this challenge needed creativity too,” says Macgregor. He describes the group as “pretty laid back”. After competing in the final at 8pm, they headed to the Te Ramaroa Light Festival. At 9.30pm they found a quiet spot to attend the Zoom results announcement and discovered they had won. Teacher Yvonne Daly says she thought these boys could do really well. “They were fantastic through the whole journey.” Now, the baking is on her.
When West Coasters Murray Wieblitz and Helen Bennett met at Hokitika School in 1958, they could never have predicted their friendship would span more than six decades. Their lives saw them both relocate to Tasman in their early childhoods, and they now organise the annual ex-West Coasters Reunion. This year it’s being held on Sunday, 15 August, at 1pm at Club Waimea, Richmond. Murray says it’s a chance for everyone who has relocated here from the West Coast to get together to meet like-minded people and have a yarn about the old days. “We want to encourage some new faces to come along this year, too, it’s not just for retirees.” He says the recent floods will bring lots of people together this year. “We donated a large sum of money from the group to the Buller Mayoral Relief Fund because we have
a strong sense of community, and they really need our help right now.” The reunion has been running annually for many years and Helen says, at the get-togethers you always bump into someone with mutual friends. “The West Coast is a place where everybody knows everybody. So, the reunion gives us a chance to keep those connections going, especially as a lot of us are getting older now.” Guest speaker Chris Coll will talk at the event about how water and sea rescue has developed in the Buller region and local coastal areas over the years. “Chris will also chat about some prominent and noteworthy rescue and recovery missions that he has been involved with,” says Helen. Afterwards, guests can enjoy a lavish afternoon tea and some great company. Tickets are $10. Please RSVP Helen on 03 547 6135 before 7 August. Tickets can also be bought at the door.

With the wind in their hair and sun on their faces, Oakwoods residents are trying out the retirement village’s electric trishaw for the first time. Staff say the activity has proven mental health benefits for the residents, especially those with dementia, where the feeling of riding a bike evokes memories of yesteryear. Maaike Faber, wellness leader at Oakwoods, says it also gives residents the chance to get out and about and a bit more freedom. “Initially we’ll just ride around the village, but once the weather improves we’ll head off on the Great Taste Trail as we can access an easy section of it from here.” Oakwoods resident, Elizabeth Brunner, 85, says she loves being taken out on the electric trishaw. “It’s great fun and I get to see much more than I would being inside.” Moneka Palmer, wellness partner at Oakwoods, says just tak-

Richmond designer Gillian Saunders is a finalist in the World of Wearable Arts - again. While she is unable to give details of the piece until after the show, she says the entry, in the architectural section, was inspired by a famous museum. “I’ve had a strange relationship with this one,” says Gillian. “We haven’t always seen eye to eye. I’ve chipped away at it, got sick of it, done some more and put a sheet over it for a while.” Normally having a deadline means she has adrenaline to finish a garment, but because WOW 2020 was cancelled, this piece dragged on an extra year. When it came time to take a photo of her completed piece to send to WOW she didn’t like it so made last minute additions and removals. She has entered the competition most years since 2002 and says she has been very fortunate to have reached the finals a few times and to have won the open section in 2018 with her piece ‘Underling.’
Her pieces tend to be colourful and vibrant. “I love colour. Which is weird because I wear all black,” she says. “The colourful me from inside pops up in the garments I make.” Gillian’s background includes time as a prop maker for Granada television in England and then for the Court Theatre in Christchurch. In those positions she was fulfilling a brief, and she loves the freedom WOW gives to do anything she likes. Having submitted her entry, she won’t see it again until it is on stage in Wellington. She finds that stage very nervewracking, having only ever seen her piece static and in a small space. She says it’s fantastic to see the evolution of her design, what WOW brings to her designs with choreography, lighting, the massive arena, and the model’s interpretation. WOW will be held in Wellington from 30 September to 17 October and it is expected around 60,000 people will attend. There are 102 finalists from 19 countries.

Since 2012, the Walk With Us charity has given away over 680 pairs of shoes to school children in need across Nelson Tasman. Demand for the service is high and three new trustees, Bridgette Pretty, Tanea Collier and Jill Dew, have recently joined the all-women team. Bridgette says she got involved with the charity because she wanted to have the opportunity to give back to the community - especially children. “I love going into the schools and interacting with the kids to remind them that we are here and what support we can provide to them.” Fellow trustee Jill Taylor says the non-profit organisation provides vouchers for school shoes, sports shoes and socks to families under financial pressure at all primary and intermediate schools across the region. Ruth Russ When the New Zealand Company settlers arrived in the Waimea region in 1842, the area was largely vacant. Fourteen years earlier, a pa had been located near the Appleby School, believed to have been built by Ngai Tara. Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri also inhabited the region, fending off attacks by surrounding iwi until Ngāti Toa chief Te Rauparaha led allied tribes to annihilate them in 1828. The Waimea and nearby Pohare pa (situated in Brightwater) were abandoned. Surveyors John Wallis Barnicoat and Thomas John Thompson arrived in Nelson in 1842 and secured a contract to survey 20,000 acres of land in Waimea. At the time they likely had no idea that some of the land around Waimea had been enhanced through a massive labour effort by Māori, hundreds of years earlier. Thousands of tonnes of ash, sand and gravel had improved the soil fertility over several generations.

Barnicoat and Thompson engaged five labourers to help them with the survey, purchasing a whale boat to transport them to the area. After locating the mouth of the Waimea River, they landed at the head of the bay and unloaded the boat. It was soon apparent that the site would not suit their needs as a base camp, as the land was too wet and the site too far from the survey starting point. The party decided to move to the end of a long spur reaching down from the eastern hills - a four-day trek through swamps and rivers. They shifted all their gear, including a load of timber, by themselves. Upon reaching their chosen camp, the party set about building a shelter. The timber they had brought with them was not sufficient, so they felled several large trees in a small valley two miles from the campsite in order to provide posts for framing mud walls. Construction of the hut was completed on the 9th of April 1842 - the first European house
built in Richmond. Frederick Tuckett, the chief surveyor for the Nelson Province, visited the party in May and was pleased with Barnicoat and Thompson’s progress. But as winter set in, the conditions were harsh. A fire started near the survey house and spread to the Wairoa River in three days, and the campsite became known as Destruction Hill. The survey house afforded shelter not only to the survey party. Settlers who entered the area for sport and lost their bearings were several times found by the surveyors. The sportsmen were brought back to the house and given food and a bed for the night, before being sent in the right direction towards Nelson. The house served its purpose, and on the 30th of July the surveyors drove in the final pegs, completing their contract. The surveyors closed the door to Richmond’s first house on the last day of July and returned to the relative comforts of Nelson.

Tami Neilson takes to the Arts Fest stage Staff Reporter Come along to The F Word and you can expect a barnstorming night of music and song, but be warned, you might learn a few things as well. This is Tami Neilson and her band at full force, alongside some hard-hitting storytelling with stats and facts about women in country music. The award-winnning Tami performs a rich songbook of country classics. Neilson’s songs are bold, brassy, finger-snapping and up-tempo. They’re what CBC Music claimed as “rousing and vibrant, like thunder and lightning”. Tami says The F Word is about the role of feminism in country music. “Country music is known for being a particularly conservative genre,” she says. “It just didn’t progress like other music genres. Perhaps because in country music, it’s the case that radio is still king, and it can make or break a career. The whole infrastructure of country music is around what radio stations play, which means that there are a small number of gatekeepers,

mostly men, who determine that women still only make up 10 per cent airplay.” People coming to the show might expect the inequality and sexism in the 1940s and 1950s, but they’re shocked to hear that it still continues today. As recently as 2015, one of the leading country music magazines, Aircheck, published an article by Keith Hill, who advised “if you want to make ratings in country radio, take
females out”. Which makes it even more amazing when women do make the charts. Neilson grew up in country music, performing and touring across Canada and North America with the Neilson Family Band, working alongside greats such as Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker, and Kitty Wells. Neilson created The F Word to acknowledge and celebrate the female greats in country music, and to inspire the next generation. The
show is a concert that has a little bit of enlightenment, and a whole lot of singing, with Neilson performing songs by Dolly Parton, Dixie Chicks, KD Land and Beyonce, as well as some of her own cracking numbers. Brightwater Motors – the vehicle maintenance and repair workshop situated next door to Brightwater NPD on the village’s main street – celebrates its one year anniversary under the ownership of Dave and Natalie Gilberd this week. Established in 1964 the business is no newcomer to the region, however a brief closure in 2019/20 meant that reopening in August last year required a ‘new business launch’ approach from the couple. “The workshop needed a full overhaul” says Dave. “We removed at least two large skips of scrap before we could get in here properly and start working on

Cars were dragged out of the back plot and workbenches were stripped and recovered. Electrics were rewired, hoists replaced and the whole floor was repainted. “One of my most satisfying moments came when I ripped out the old four metre long lathe and replaced it with a massive macrocarpa bar” Dave laughs. “It’s been a hotspot for visitors ever since!” A skilled tradesman – Dave’s a trained aircraft engineer and

Drawing on past experiences of setting up businesses – Goldbeard Guitars, his guitar manufacturing and repair company now located at Brightwater Motors, and the UK branch of a New Zealand commercial engineering firm – Dave planned out and prioritised his next steps. Happily he had good support to help him work through these. Dave Gilberd teaching a group of women in the popular ‘Chicks That “Natalie has great marketing exFix’ training sessions. Supporting local business Senior Technician Ben Close with Karsiah, Ethan and Dave Gilberd. “One day a few months ago, out of the blue, we got a call from TVNZ saying they’d heard about our women’s workshops and wanted us to teach them how to change a wheel live on air” says Dave. “It was all pretty nerve-wracking – especially when our time got cropped down from five minutes to three – but we did it, and have the pink overalls to show for it.”
No stranger to the media, Dave received a fair amount of attention when he first bought Brightwater Motors as an Air New Zealand engineer pivoting after last year’s local branch restructure. A positive showcase, Dave’s story is that he was scouring the ‘Businesses For Sale’ listings barely an hour after hearing the news of his redundancy when Brightwa-
ter Motors caught his eye. He spent the next few months steering the business in and out of COVID alert levels whilst supporting some of his aircraft friends through the upheaval. “Looking back, I guess it has been a busy year” says Dave, who seems to have taken it all in his stride. “It’s all gone so quickly. I’ve just really enjoyed it.”

Customer Review: Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Value. It has taken me far too long to give a giant thumbs up to this company. The owners and people who work here are quite simply outstanding. Every single time my wife and I have had repairs carried out or purchases made, we are made to feel like their friends, we are kept informed, nothing is too much trouble or too hard and to top-it-off, the work is outstandingly superior, and the costs are very fair. I strongly and highly recommend Tyres & More for any servicing or repairs needed.

Registered Master Builders House of the Year The Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards is a prestigious competition which celebrates building excellence in New Zealand and confirm the Registered Master Builders Association’s commitment to building excellence. The House of the Year awards celebrate New Zealand’s best homes and builders and the craftsmanship behind them. The Nelson/Marlborough/West Coast regional awards were announced at a gala event in July where local members gathered to hear the results and celebrate their successes. All category entrants in each region are critiqued by the same panel of judges, who assess each property and decide on a score against a set criteria for each category. Every entry is marked out of possible 2,000 points which are granted for workmanship, design, style and functionality. Award winning properties will receive either a gold, silver, or bronze award.

Salter Builders What does a gold, silver or bronze award mean? Gold Award – 80% above the building industry standard Silver Award - 65% above the building industry standard Bronze Award – 50% above the building industry standard This means that both builders and clients can be confident that the award for the property, whether bronze, silver, or gold, represents an extremely high standard of building. This year Salter Builders won the Gold Award New Home over $2 million; Category Winner new home over $2 million; Lifestyle Award - Outdoor Living Excellence; Lifestyle Award - Interior Design; Regional Supreme Award and 2021 Registered Master Builders House of the Year.
Jason Gardiner Builders was established by Pam and Jason Gardiner in 2012 and has quickly become one of the Nelson region’s most reputable, awardwinning, independent building companies. Jason and Pam are incredibly proud of their regional Gold Award (CARTERS New Home $1 Million - $1.5 Million category) and extend a big thank you to their amazing team, great sub-contractors and their super clients. Perched high on a hill, this eye-catching architecturally designed home makes the most of panoramic sea views across Tasman Bay. A cantilevered open-plan kitchen/living/ dining area leading to a deck allows the owners to enjoy uninterrupted views to the beach and Haulashore Island. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom home is 203sqm of pure delight, inside and out. Bold exterior lines and charred Siberian larch cladding, together with light-filled spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows and doors, are just some of the jewels in and
on this hilltop stunner. The dark exterior scheme continues inside – the custom-designed kitchen is like a work of art with a black granite bench and fittings juxtaposed against an illuminated canary yellow splashback. The appliances are either integrated or out of sight. Talk about X factor. Just when you think you’re done with striking surprises, you’ll come across a natural marble staircase. This leads you to the upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms where a tasteful blackand-white palette continues – along with those magnificent views. Jason Gardiner Builders specialise in architectural new builds and renovations. Their reputation is built upon an unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation, their expert team, and their lasting relationships with their clients.

Stonewood Homes Nelson Stonewood Homes Nelson, which is owned by Brent and Tara Stewart, was named winner of the New Home up to $450,000 category and a gold award for a home in Richmond. The judges said: ‘This home may be compact, but it’s been exceptionally designed and is well positioned for the sun. The generous kitchen sits in the centre of the house and features a full wall of immaculate herringbone tiles enhanced by beautiful floating shelves. The workmanship on the doors, trims, fixtures, and painting are of a high standard throughout.’ Think a brand-new home with character touches is out of reach? Or a place that has all the bells and whistles? You might want to think again. Although this three-bedroom property is only 160sqm, it has everything you’d see in a much larger home. Step inside and you’ll find a main bedroom with ensuite and a walk-in wardrobe; a kitchen that ticks all the boxes, including a walk-

in pantry; two living spaces; and double garage. Everywhere you look are details that set this place apart. Imagine closing the shutters, running a bath and settling in for a long, relaxing soak in the main bathroom. It’s a calm, attractive space thanks to beautiful tiling. The kitchen – the point from which the living room, lounge and dining room flow, packs a stylish punch. White herringbone tiles contrast with deep-blue cabinetry and light fixtures above the breakfast bar add wow factor. The lounge, a serene space in
muted hues, opens directly onto a private deck. Outside, the house with its gables, metal-tile roof and tidy kerbside appeal, looks as if it has always belonged on its patch. Stonewood Homes Nelson also won a silver award in the GIB Show Home category. Walk through this beautifully crafted show home and you’ll instantly appreciate why great design is so important to relaxed family living. The 220sqm pavilion-style house is expertly planned to accommodate everyone. At its heart – in the centre of one of the two wings – is the striking kitchen

and butler’s pantry. On one side is the sun-drenched dining/living area, on the other is the lounge. In the second wing, you’ll find three spacious bedrooms and a family bathroom, plus the main bedroom with ensuite and walkin wardrobe. Because the house is H-shaped, rooms open up to a central, private decked area. It’s modern, easy living at its best. The smarts in the design are also evident in the styling. The interior, in earthy and subdued tones, are given punches of colour, such as the rich blue in one of the bathrooms.
The designer kitchen, in wood and charcoal, has a striking splashback and bench. Doubleglazed aluminium joinery sits comfortably with the exterior claddings – a mix of battened panels and clay-brick veneer. A double garage tops off this easy-to-love, easy-to-live-in home. Brent and Tara also own Stonewood Homes Blenheim, which brought home a silver medal for a lovely home in Witherlea. Stonewood Homes deliver unmatched value and quality in their builds, and experience that’s second-to-none.
The team at Milestone Homes are delighted to have received a Gold award and Category win at the recent Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast House of the Year Awards 2021. This was the first time Milestone Homes Nelson have contested these awards and entered a Richmond Home in the ‘Volume Builder up to $450,000’ category. Although confident in the quality of their entry they were not expecting to be recognised as the highest scoring home in their category which contained 4 other beautiful homes. General Manager Adam Hills commented “This award is recognition for the whole team involved – from office staff ensuring the paperwork and plans are perfect, through to the Project Management team ensuring everything runs smoothly and is completed to the highest standard. Just as importantly the builder and tradespeople completing their work to exacting standards which is a huge component

our showhome with a number of personal touches added by our client. I was always adamant that when we entered House of the Year it had to be with a home that was reflective of what we predominantly build. It also goes to show that you don’t need a million-dollar budget to have a quality home and to see this category
so fiercely contested is testament to the commitment to affordable quality in our region.” The judges’ comments were particularly satisfying to the team. “This stunning home has been well designed to make the most of the sun and the views. It is clad in plaster and vertical cedar which is complimented by the perfectly
aligned fixings. This home was built to a very high standard and is a deserving category winner.” Milestone Homes Nelson have been committed to providing their clients with high-quality homes for every budget for over 15 years and these awards are recognition of this commitment to delivering affordable quality.

You Build Matt and Janine Thomas, owners of You Build, along with their dedicated team and amazing subbies have worked hard to create an incredible home for their clients and are still buzzing with the recognition of this build at the Registered Master Builders 2021 House of the Year Awards. This Kaiteriteri build not only won a Gold award, it also took away the Regional Category award for the Carters New Home $1 Million – $1.5 Million, and the Regional Lifestyle Kitchen Award. Just a short walk from Kaiteriteri Beach sits the striking architecturally designed 136sqm home, plus garage. The eye-catching form is tailored to the section and the roofline is designed to provide respite from heat in summer and shelter from the elements in winter. But what it also provides are the prerequisites for an astonishing deck, which runs the length of the building and pushes into a recess, effectively forming an outdoor room. The owners can throw open the doors, hit
the deck and relax all-year round. Step through the front door and take a left into the breezeway that separates living and sleeping zones, then flows to an open-plan area. In the latter you’ll find a kitchen made from hard-wearing materials that invite big family gatherings. Negative-detail plylined ceilings in the living area add warmth and flair and extralarge stackers create indoor-outdoor flow. Take a right from the breezeway and you’ll come across the bathrooms and bedrooms, one of which is a bespoke bunk room. The cladding on this remarkable beach home will natu-
rally weather to silver, blending in with the landscape. Judges were obviously impressed and commented: “This architecturally impressive home is designed around the angle of the site with a roof that provides shade in summer and lets the sun in during the winter months. The builder overcame challenges with over one hundred 9.0m driven piles for the foundation and accurately built the complex structure with obtuse angles and raking ceiling lines. The outside adobo cladding has been fitted with precision and the screens were carefully installed.
The angled ply-lined ceilings in the living area and oak flooring have also been beautifully fitted. This house may have had its challenges, but the builder excelled and completed it to a very high standard.” When it came to explaining why this particular home was the winner in the Regional Lifestyle Kitchen Excellence Award, here’s what the judges had to say: “This beautifully crafted kitchen is functional and well designed for family living. There is great indoor-outdoor flow between the inside and outside living areas of the house. Light has been cleverly
introduced to the space from a high-level window which is set within the accurately constructed and installed cabinets. The kitchen features hidden handles in the plywood doors and drawers, as well as concealed lighting which adds ambiance to this beautiful space.” You Build owners Matt and Janine are a dynamic duo with a modern and fresh view to house renovations and new builds, embracing quality and innovation, and combining their building experience with good communication and a personal approach. From concept to completion, it’s all about YOU!
Jennian Homes Nelson Bays is known for building custom design homes for its clients. Once again, the company has proven its capabilities at the recent Nelson Marlborough West Coast Master Builders 2021 House of the Year competition, achieving five significant awards. Jennian won the New Home $450,000 $600,000 category, receiving a gold award for a home in Richmond, which offers the ‘Best of Both Worlds.’ The judges praised the design and build: ‘This home has been designed to be in keeping with the built environment. The layout is well designed for family living and entertaining and the cladding has been very well detailed. The doors, windows and joinery have all been carefully installed, and the floor coverings, plastering and painting is also of a very high standard. Overall, this is a very well-designed house.’ The owners wanted their new home to be in keeping with other homes in their established neighbourhood. So, after they

removed the old house, the design team came up with a replacement that mixed plaster weatherboard cladding with features such as character window detailing and traditional rooflines. These created a feeling of yesteryear – but with convenience of the latest products, innovations and building techniques. Jennian also won a gold award for Volume/Group Housing New Home up to $450,000 for a compact, stylish home in Stoke that had a challenging site to build on. They also received a silver award in the same category, for a warm, sunny open plan home in Richmond. Jennian Homes Nelson Bays also achieved a silver award for Altus Windows Systems New Home – $750,000 – $1million. This modern, luxurious home has architectural touches, and it maximises the surrounding views.
Mike Greer Homes are proud to be consistent multi award recipients in the Master Builder House of the Year Awards, this year being recognised as both Regional Category Winners and Gold Awards for homes in Marlborough and Nelson. Specialising in homes that are refreshingly different, warm, inviting and finished with genuine flair, the annual awards are an acknowledgement of the hard work that goes into every home they design and build. Their show home in Blenheim is a deserving winner of the Regional Category Award in the GIB Show Home Category together with a Gold Award. Judges comment that “the home features a quality design which prioritises functional family living and entertaining. Winter sun pours into the living room and a central north facing covered outdoor area is ideally positioned to enjoy alfresco outdoor living and this well-built and aesthetically pleasing house is one that the builder and
homeowner can be proud of. In Stoke their modern, classic home was awarded the Regional Category Award, together with a Gold Award in the Volume/Group Housing New Home $450,000 - $750,000 category. Combining a smart exterior, commanding street presence, and rural views with clever design on the inside, judges noted that this sunny home has been cleverly designed to make the most of open plan living. The lounge opens to the covered alfresco area, while the dining room has access to the rear garden with views to the West. Mike Greer Homes would like to thank the homeowners, staff and sub-contractors who were involved with these builds. Without their help they wouldn’t be able to provide homes to these exacting standards.

Mary Poppins flies into Nelson Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz Mary Poppins is flying into the Theatre Royal this September, and it’s set to be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. In what is to be one of the largest musicals ever produced in Nelson, with a budget of $130,000, it promises to be a visual feast for young and old. “It utilises the same lavish touring set, vibrant costumes and effects as what was seen at both the Civic Theatre in Auckland and the Court Theatre in Christchurch,” says vice president of the Nelson Musical Theatre, Jane Baken. With 15 shows in total, Jane says it has been three years in the making for the company and they are thrilled to finally bring the musical to Nelson for the first time with the help of principal sponsor, NBS. “We had plans to produce it last year, but it was

Fifty years of country music Jenny Nicholson This weekend sees the Nelson Country Music club celebrate its 50 years of existence. The club began as a mix of western riding enthusiasts and country and western music enthusiasts, with the inaugural meeting held at the home of renowned local western rider Wally Smith. Wally was also a country and western singer and leather carver, and the belts and guitar straps he made are still used by members of the club today. “The Nelson Country & Western Club name was changed in 1980 to the Nelson Country Music Club, due to a decline in the western riding side of things and to encourage interest in the country music side,” says club member Paul Nees. Over the years members have had success in national events, including Garin College’s Zac Griffiths’ win in the intermediate section of the MLT New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards last month. Along with meeting fortnightly to sing at Club Waimea, the group runs the NZ Sun City Country Music Awards in October each year. “As the awards grew in status and numbers, many of our winners would go on from the Sun City weekend to forge successful careers in music in different regions in New Zealand and other parts of the world,” says Paul. While many of the club are older, there are families involved. Luke and Paula Connor, anchor members of the local band ‘Route 66’, are joined by their three children who are, or are becoming, confident entertainers.

Laughing in the face of cancer Jo Kent and Erin Bradnock Anna Stephens had just celebrated being five-years clear of breast cancer only to be told it was back and, this time, it was terminal. The 42-year-old says her whole world was turned on its head. “I got to five years – the magic number. Once you get there, you have a party. You dust yourself off and pick up your life again.” Anna says she was in the process of returning to work and then suddenly everything changed. “All the plans I made had to go on the back burner. You drop everything and just live for every day.” When her theatre friends heard about her diagnosis, they decided to put their skills into action to fundraise for her to enjoy the time she has left with her family, a 10-year-old daughter and 19-year-old son. Performers, including dancers, singers, comedians and magicians from across the region, are putting on a show for Anna’s ‘Laughing at Cancer Cabaret’ this Friday, 6 Au-

“We are very happy to be able to offer these classes for people to uncover their hidden talents in a fun supportive environment,” says Susanne. “Perhaps you haven’t picked up a brush since your school days or if you are completely new to art, we welcome that, very much. We will look after you and teach you step-by-step techniques.” From small beginnings in 2009, this stepby-step art class for beginners has become incredibly popular and has grown to over 150 branches in the UK and teaches over 6,000 new artists every week. Heiko and Susanne believe the success comes down to the professional quality of the curriculum, which provides real value and a great experience for participating students. The Season’s method takes you from the very
basics up to intermediate level. Everyone is encouraged to follow their own style of expression. Students are given time to settle into their creative mode through the well organised three-hour long classes, which are run over 14 morning, afternoon or evening sessions. Refreshments and art supplies are provided. During the course, students will explore four different media drawing, painting with watercolour, acrylics, and oil pastels. Discover how to paint faces, figures, friends, family and stunning landscapes, and learn to create beautiful pieces of original art. In the final week, there is an exhibition for friends
and family. A fantastic aspect of the course is that you get to meet others who share the same interest. “There is now a worldwide acknowledgement that taking time out to learn new skills in a supportive environment is vital for wellbeing. Art classes are an ideal past-time which stimulates healthy mental agility.” The Season’s Art Class is a 14-week course (which commenced 7 July) at Fairfield House from 9.30am to 11.30am or 1pm – 4pm. Evening Classes are now available too, commencing 31 August from 6pm to 9pm. For more information, visit www.seasonsartclass-tasman-nelson.com ADvERToRIAl

The All Blacks Sevens fell just short in its bid for Olympic gold, losing to Fiji in the men’s sevens final in Tokyo. Fiji raced out to a 12-0 lead and stayed ahead for the full 14 minutes, claiming back-to-back gold medals with the 24-12 victory. Tasman playmaker Andrew Knewstubb was prevalent for New Zealand as he had been throughout the tournament as the All Blacks won a silver medal for the first time in history. Andrew says it’s been a whirlwind ever since that final whistle. “I’m pretty knackered, we ended up celebrating the last five years of hard mahi even though it wasn’t how we wanted to end it.” He says he is incredibly proud to be part of the team. “I will always remember these

The former Kahurangi utility was also tasked with carving a mere or patu for the team to take to Tokyo. The team would hold the mere aloft in a huddle prior to kick off. Andrew says his father dabbled in the craft and taught him how to create the traditional Māori hand weapon. “Normally, we only bring it out for the final, but every game was a final for us at the Olympics.” He says the mere tells the story of the connection between the team, its whānau, and its whenua. “Small marks are made on the side of the mere which came from our loved ones.” The mere will be presented to the best defender of the year and that player will keep the taonga forever.
Richmond edge FC Nelson Richmond AFC has leapfrogged FC Nelson on the division one football table after leaving Guppy Park with a 3-1 upset victory on Saturday. A week on from its stunning 4-0 rout of competition leaders Rangers, FC could only manage a single goal against the revitalised Richmond side. FC had two golden opportunities to open the scoring, but keeper Dan Dowding was up to the task with some impressive saves. Thang Thang Vanuk eventually put his side on the board in the 35th minute, dancing around the Richmond defence before thundering it into the back right of the net. Fergus Griffin pulled one back for Richmond moments later as he found an open goal in front of him and made no mistake, levelling the scores with five minutes remaining in the half. Richmond took the lead five minutes into the second as Max Duncan put it on a platter for Max Squire with a precision cross which Squire duly hammered home. Ben McLean made it 3-1, leaving FC with a tough task in the final twenty. With FC opting for all-out attack, it left plenty of opportunities at the other end of the pitch for Richmond.

Sport Harriers: Weather and underfoot conditions were excellent for the 108 participants in the ‘Waimea Harriers Sprig & Fern 10km Run and Walk’ around the streets of urban Richmond on Saturday, 31st July. However, the course which started in the Bill Wilkes Reserve, provided many challenges for competitors as having just recovered from one uphill section, they were faced with yet another hill ahead of them. Matt Bowen was the fastest of the runners, coming home in a very credible time of 35.48 mins, while Angela Leck was the first woman in 43.24 mins. Steve Pauling led the walker’s home in 1.09.15hrs, with Tania Gardiner the fastest woman, close behind in 1.09.25hrs. Saturday’s event was the first of four very popular 10km races based at Sprig and Fern Taverns around the region. Alex Ward had a shot at putting it beyond doubt but couldn’t connect with a cross and sent it sailing over the crossbar. 1-0 loss to rivals Australia. Waimea College alumnus Kelsey Smith scored the only goal for New Zealand in the 35th minute after Spain took a 2-0 first half lead. Kelsey also scored in her side’s opening victory against Argentina before the Black Sticks defeated hosts Japan 2-1. They faced the Netherlands on Monday evening for a spot in the semi’s. Nelson Rowing Club’s Brook Robertson has bowed out of the men’s coxless pairs with Stephen Jones, with the Kiwi duo finishing sixth in its semifinal and failing to advance to the final. The Kiwi crew finished last, 27.95 seconds behind winners Romania. After a disappointing 26th place finish in the men’s road race, Nelson cyclist George Bennett’s Olympic campaign has come to an end as he finished 25th in the men’s time trial, 5min 4.2sec off Slovenian Primoz Roglic who won gold. Callan Elliot’s Olywhites made history last week as the first New Zealand side to make it through to the men’s football quarterfinals. The OlyWhites came agonisingly close to reaching to top four with their clash against Japan coming down to penalties. The sides were locked up at 0-all after 120 minutes of action, with the hosts eventually prevailing 4-2 in the shootout. Football teams named the ‘Shield Maidens’ and ‘Bogans’ don’t seem like the most charitable of organisations, but over the weekend the two teams helped raise more than $11,500 for Special Olympics football, to help the team get to the nationals. The two sides, drawn from the Nelson Bays Football’s womens’ second division and the mens’ fifth division, played the charity game at Jubilee Park on Sunday with the official final score 1-1. The Shield Maidens hail from Golden Bay, while the Bogans play for Richmond Athletic. The game was the brainchild of Phil Smith, the coach of the Shield Maidens. “Today was about more than football, it was great to see two great clubs come together for a wonderful cause,” he says. Here, the players celebrate after the fundraising game. Photo: Lauren Rameka-iti.
