Students get creative with uni funding Andrew Board Nelson high school leavers are working harder to find financial scholarships in an effort to further their education. This year 17 students at Nayland College have earned financial scholarships to universities in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, totalling more than $100,000. It’s a fifty per cent increase on the number of students from last year says the head of careers at the school, Margaret McCorkindale. She says the reason for the increase is students trying to keep the cost of study down and not wanting to be lumped with a massive student loan years after they’ve finished studying. Bonnie Brown, 17, says she applied for seven scholarships at the start of the year and was accepted for two at Victoria University. She says if she hadn’t got a scholarship she would have taken a gap year to work and save for her studies. As it
is she will work during her summer holidays as a waitress to help pay her way next year and will also have to apply for a student loan. Classmate Jessica Brown, also 17, is in a similar situation. She applied for six scholarships, got two and will use that along with her savings and money from working this summer to help get her through university in Auckland. “At the start of the year I started looking at what was around because I knew my parents weren’t going to pay for it so I had to start looking,” says Jessica. Bonnie says having the scholarships, a total of $20,000 over three years, takes the pressure off. “If we hadn’t got them there would have been difficulties. Having them is a lot less pressure as well, it’s not just our holiday job we’re relying on, we still have that, but it’s a relief that we don’t have to pay for everything.” Margaret says students are more

Santa’s big day December’s favourite personality made his way to Nelson on Sunday and crowds of up to 10,000 people turned out to welcome him to town. The annual Santa Parade was
held under sparkling sunshine down Trafalgar St and to the Founders Heritage Park where a family carnival was held. Organiser Huup Waagen says 42 floats were entered in the
parade and he was thrilled with the turnout. “Beautiful. Beautiful day and the whole thing had a beautiful atmosphere. I’m very, very happy with the whole day.”

“No, I didn’t know. It makes me wonder about taking my dog to other river’s. They need to let people know.”
“No I wasn’t aware, it is scary. The council should make it more widely known to the public.”
Students more aware of uni scholarships, say advisors FROM PAGE 1 aware of what’s available and says the number of Nayland students applying is up 50 per cent on previous years. “I’m still thinking with the [financial] downturn perhaps there’s more talk in families about funding, financing and how they’ll do it. Also, there have been a number of other students who have opted to take a gap year and part of that has been financial to try to raise money to keep the costs of study down.” Nelson College students also did well securing scholarships, with two students, Hamish Mellor and Ed Palmer, earning a $50,000 University of Auckland scholarship, the latter also
secured a $35,000 scholarship from Otago University. Other major scholarships were to Lincoln, Canterbury and Victoria universities. Careers advisor for Nelson College Leigh Gray says more money was collected by students in smaller grants and scholarships, including from NMIT and Network Tasman and Bowater Motor Group. She says awareness about financial scholarships is growing but there is still a huge number of “excellent” students who don’t qualify and with 43 per cent of Year 13 students planning on attending university next year they will have to pile their study costs onto a student loan.

Car smash at ANZ Driver was speeding, drunk and running from police Andrew Board
Helen Bush Colour Designer Nelson
A car smashed through the front doors of the ANZ Bank on Trafalgar St on Saturday night after speeding away from police. The driver and four passengers of the car are lucky to be alive, according to police, after speeding along Hardy St before hitting a raised courtesy crossing outside the Nelson Provincial Museum, clipping a taxi and crashing through the bank’s front doors, on the corner of Hardy and Trafalgar Sts. According to witnesses, it narrowly missed several people as it sped over the footpath and into the building. Police say they tried to stop the car on St Vincent St after seeing it turn away to avoid a checkpoint. The vehicle initially pulled into the kerb, but as the police officer approached it the driver sped away. The vehicle turned into the car park in front of The Warehouse and was chased by police through the car park, coming out on to Hardy St. Due to the speed, police say they abandoned the pursuit after less than a minute. None of the four passengers were injured in the accident and the 31 year old driver has

Sunny Donation started with a beer summer predicted for Nelson Andrew Board
Summer weather will return to normal this year with NIWA’s three month climate outlook predicting a typically dry season. Summer temperatures are likely to be near average while seasonal rainfall totals, soil moisture levels, and river flows are also all expected to be in the near normal range. Nelson and Tasman can expect around 190mm of rain throughout the three months, which is a huge contrast to the 280mm of rain that fell in Nelson during the space of 48 hours last December. NIWA’s climate scientist Georgina Griffiths says while the outlook is based on 30 years of historical data, they do not capture the extreme events. “Obviously Nelson got extreme events, but that is not captured in these 90 day overviews,” she says. “Because soils are unusually dry, soil moisture and river flows are forecast to be on the dry side.”
As with all great ideas, it started over a beer in a pub. Prince Albert Hotel regulars Chris Gunn and Pat Wilson have raised more than $900 thanks to a bet over a game of tennis and the support from regulars at the Prince Albert. Last week they put that money to good use, donating two kayaks and lifejackets to the special education department at Waimea College. Chris says the idea started at the bar as a bit of fun but has quickly escalated, picking up the name the Prince Albert Charity Shield. More locals have organised another event for the shield, scheduled for February. “We were talking about tennis here one night and Pat said he used to play so I said ‘right, I’ll thump ya’,” says Chris. After the challenge was accepted the pair thought they may as well do it for some reason other than pride and organised a sweepstake. Then the other locals got behind it. One made a shield with the words “Prince Albert Charity Shield” on it, others took part in the sweepstake and around 40 turned up one Sunday morning to eat strawberries, drink champagne and “yell abuse” at Chris and Pat while they “waddled around one Sunday morning attempting to play tennis”, says Chris. They all retired to the Prince Albert after the match for a barbeque and auction. Chris says the success of the event surprised them. “We thought we’d see if we

Photo: Andrew Board. could raise 50 bucks for a couple of basketballs and we’d be happy, but it just went on.” The pair decided to use the money to donate something to Waimea College’s special education department as one of its students, Scott Lowden, works an hour or two a week at the pub and his dad John is also one of the locals. They asked the department for a list of what they’d like and decided to buy the kayaks. Teacher Julia Roberts says the gift is fantastic for the school. “They learn so many skills from it, working together, unloading a trailer, all that kind of thing. We try to stand back as much as possible, so this
donation will be great for the students and we’re so rapt, it’s just fantastic.” While the first charity shield challenge involved just Chris and Pat the next one looks as if it will be open to a lot more people and may involve a triathlon, complete with egg and spoon race. “The next one won’t be anything serious. They’ll do another sweepstake and auction and find another charity locally to take the money off us. Hopefully we’ve started something that will put the pub on the map and now someone else has picked up on it for the next event and it will continue on,” says Chris.

River algae kills family puppy Your Community Newspaper
Andrew Board A family puppy died last week after it was poisoned by some toxic algae in the Waimea River. Wakefield’s Stacey and Katie Lines took their two children and two eight month old puppies to the Waimea River, at Appleby last Thursday night for a swim. The whole family went into the river and after the swim drove back to Wakefield. It wasn’t until they unloaded the car that they noticed something was wrong with one of their dogs, Betty. “When we opened the car door she was convulsing. I just started crying and said ‘Stace, Stace, you’ve got to do something’.” Stacey called the vet, rushed her into Richmond, but it was too late. Betty died in the car so Stacey turned around and came home. Katie says her tongue was very blue. “I can’t explain it, it was so blue like she’d had no air.” The algae is called Cyanobacteria produces the neurotoxin anatoxin, which is potentially lethal to dogs, stock and humans when ingested in large amounts. Dogs that are
known to eat the algae are most at risk. The algae has been a problem in Nelson’s Maitai River for some time but not in the Waimea river until now. Because it is naturally occurring bacteria and not the result of outside contamination, there is little that can be done to eliminate it apart from waiting for the river to be cleared naturally by significant rainfall increasing flows. Nelson City Council’s Martin Workman says people need to be vigilant with their dogs. “As the weather warms up and water levels remain stable, the problem is likely to worsen. Warning signs have been erected at swimming holes as a precautionary approach and to raise public awareness.” Katie says she wants other families to be aware of the risk so they don’t have to go through the same “miserable” experience. “It’s the river. We never thought there’d be something in there that could kill our dogs and our kids were in there swimming too. What if one went under and took a gulp of the water? It’s obviously not very nice stuff.”

Nelson acts shine on big stage Phillip Rollo Hana Tava says she wasn’t nervous performing at Coca Cola Christmas in the Park, despite having more than 100,000 people watching her every move. The 13 year old Stoke singer was one of two local acts that made their way to Christchurch’s Hagley Park for the weekend’s performance. The Car Company Origin Dance Crew were also invited to perform, having successfully made their way through the auditions. Reflecting on her rendition of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Hana says it was “awesome” and she got to meet heaps of famous people when she was there. “At the start I was nervous and then I just got used to it,” she says. “I just did what I usually do. I got to meet Jamie McDell, Dane Rumble and Drew Neemia. It was kind of scary performing in front of that many people but

Police on hunt for fake IDs Nelson Police have issued a warning to teenagers that attempting to use a fake ID to buy liquor could land them in serious trouble, including ten years in prison. Police say they are aware that some Nelson teens are creating and attempting to use fake ID. Nelson’s alcohol harm reduction officer, Sergeant Mike Fitzsimons, says a “retained ID” scheme was running in Nelson. Under the scheme door staff or licensees who identified an under age person, or a problem with the ID offered, will retain the ID and report the matter to police.
Sergeant Mike Fitzsimons with some confiscated fake IDs. Photo: Phillip Rollo. “Door staff in Nelson are very good at spotting false and altered IDs,” he says. Mike says young people needed to be aware that they were potentially in breach of several
laws. It is an offence against the Sale of Liquor Act to make a fraudulent representation to a licensee or staff member. That is punishable by a $1000 fine. It is also an offence against the Land Transport Act to deface a driver’s licence. More seriously, it is a fraud and the offences under the Crimes Act dealing with altering or reproducing documents or using such altered documents with intent to deceive are punishable with up to 10 years’ imprisonment and can cause problems if trying to travel overseas.

Fire destroys school building Information is still being sought by investigators after a blaze gutted Nayland College’s horticulture department on Friday evening. The fire started around 7pm and its black smoke was seen as far away as Tahunanui and Richmond. The fire destroyed the building that houses the department. Five fire crews attended the blaze, two each from Stoke and Nelson and one from Richmond. The Nelson Fire Service wouldn’t comment on the incident, saying all statements were being made via Nelson police. Police say they are not ruling out the possibility of it being suspicious and they would like to speak with anyone who was using the walkway that runs behind the college sports fields about 7pm on Friday. The walkway runs parallel to Norwich St towards Seaview Rd. Nayland College principal Rex Smith says he saw the smoke from a function he was at and immediately went to check it out. He says the incident has been upsetting for the school and especially the staff who work in the department.
Stoke volunteer fire fighters put out the fire that destroyed the horticulture department at Nayland College on Friday night. Photo: Phillip Rollo. “The staff are pretty upset about it as you’d expect. It’s their teaching area and they’ve put a lot of time and teaching resources into it and building that department up to what it is. We’re trying to be philosophical about it, it could have been a lot worse, no one was injured and it was in an area that was contained from the main part of the school so
we are thankful for that. But something like this is never pleasant, that’s for sure.” Rex says the school will rebuild the horticulture department and he’s been pleased with the amount of concern shown from the community. He says he is hoping it wasn’t arson.
Toy run ready to roar this weekend
For the 27th year in a row motorcyclists will fill the roads of Nelson with sound and colour as part of the Ulysses Toy Run. Motorcyclists from all over the Top of the South and the West Coast will decorate themselves and their machines to enter into the Christmas spirit for the toy run this Saturday, December 8. This event consistently attracts motorbikes and scooters of various engine sizes, all
adorned with various gifts for distribution to the region’s children by the local branch of the Salvation Army. Nelsons Ulysses branch coordinator John Macdonald says riders come from all over the South Island for the event. “The aim is to give gifts to the needy, and the Salvation Army follows our convoy to collect toys from people on the roadside. There is always a huge turnout of bikes
and spectators alike, who line the streets to watch and support the appeal. It really brings out the wonderful community spirit.” The public may come to the assembly point in Cambridge St, Richmond at 10am, to donate their gifts to the Salvation Army and to view the extensive range of scooters and motorcycles dressed for the occasion. The motorcycles will make their way into
Nelson, through Richmond’s town centre, through Stoke and finally down Trafalgar St in Nelson to the car park at the Trafalgar Centre. In recent years 30 large bags of toys have been collected during the Toy Run and the proceeds of the sale of the Toy Run Badges to the riders goes to the Salvation Army as well. The run will leave Richmond at 11am.

Head shave raises $3000 for friends
Sinead Ogilvie
A combination of a promise to get a haircut before Christmas and watching two friends struggle with cancer saw Nelson woman Monique Nicoll lose the lot on Friday night. Monique had her head shaved bald on Friday night in a bid to fundraise for her two friends, and although she walked away with nothing on top, the community has generously donated over $3000 to Monique and her cause. Recently Michelle Williams, a close friend to Monique was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. Watching her friend undergoing vigorous treatment for the disease that has spread to her
lymph nodes, and seeing her young family struggle with the ongoing costs of battling her cancer, Monique decided to fundraise. Having already raised money through other fundraising efforts, Monique looked at her “must be done by Christmas list” and saw "get a haircut" and "raise money for Michelle" was on it. “I put two and two together and realised what I should do. Shave it off for cancer and fundraise for Michelle.” With another close friend suffering from breast cancer and having recently lost her hair to the treatment, Monique wanted to up the ante and raise as much money as she could for both of them. Local businesses Pattison Swim School and Brown and Syme donated generously and the
final coins in the bucket on Friday night at the Suburban Club where the haircut took place saw Monique raise $3000. She was originally hoping for $500. Michelle was there to witness Monique’s head shave and she even got to shave half of her head. She says she couldn’t be more proud by what her friend has done. “I just can’t believe it. I’m blown away by what she’s doing. I’m so proud of her.” A few hundred people were present in the bar as Monique said goodbye to her hair, and she says she doesn’t mind being bald. “A lot of people have said that I have a good shaped head.” The money raised go towards travel costs for Michelle’s treatment, and helping to give their young kids a great Christmas.

People from all over Nelson and Tasman are encouraged to join the local Soroptimist groups to help raise awareness about violence towards women. This Saturday, Soroptimist International of Nelson and Waimea are walking from the Church steps on Trafalgar St to Tahunanui beach to highlight the violence against women. The Walk the Talk event is being held in various countries and centres and will kick off in Nelson at 10am, wet or fine. Other local groups who work with women have been invitied to participate and there will be stalls and a barbeque at the beach. Funds raised on the day will go to Sexual Abuse
Support and Healing and the Women’s Refuge. Organiser Joy Oakly says they want to show Nelson and the wider community that it’s not ok to ignore violence against women. “Together we need to raise an awareness of the issue and advocate for women who are abused.” Joy says she has no idea how many people will turn out for the event but if it’s fine she is expected a good crowd. “We’ve told a lot of people about it and everyone seems to be very keen. Hopefully we get a lot but you never know. This is the first time we’ve done something like this before.” For more information call Joy on 027 602 2955 or Sheryl on 021 034 2268.

Scooters and (most) drivers survive off road challenge Andrew Board The latest edition of the Survivor Scooter challenge was declared the “best ever” by organiser Jason Monopli last week. The survivor scooter challenge involves a group of riders hopping on a scooter and attempting to travel over some gnarly but fun off-road tracks. The event isn’t just about fun though, it raised more than $8000 for children’s charity Project KPH. This year the group of 12 riders took off from Nelson and headed through the Hira forest to Okiwi Bay. Jason says some of the tracks were pretty tough. “The hardest part of the trip was a pylon access track from Okiwi Bay. It was some pretty serious off roading and some of our support
vehicles had to be winched out at parts of that track.” The group also suffered its only major injury with one rider breaking some ribs and having to pull out. The challenge isn’t all about travelling on the scooters with various games along the way. This year the group did synchronised dressage on their scooters, played scooter soccer and jumped hurdles. There were also beach races and other events. Jason says overall the challenge was fantastic. “We had a great time, had great sponsors and support from the Nelson off-roading club. It was great fun and in the end we raised a really good amount of money for the charity, which is what it’s all about.” The challenge ended on Marlborough’s Ward Beach last weekend.
Some of the riders take in the views along the Marlborough Sounds as part of the Survivor Scooter Challenge last week.

We read that last winter the Richmond Airshed exceeded National Air Quality Standards 16 times. The end is nigh!! The NCC Resource Scientist attending the reported meeting in Richmond stated that “Heightened levels of PM10 in the air in some cases caused death” This statement is quite preposterous and totally alarmist and cannot be supported by fact, The NZ Medical Journal (March 2011) has categorically said that wood smoke from home fires does not cause bronchospasm illness and mortality from PM10 is extremely low. In fact the NZ Medical Journal strongly stresses that mortality from living in cold inadequately heated houses is a

much more important issue than air pollution. The Journal says that it is important that diversity of heating methods are maintained and in particular residents should continue to be able to burn dry wood which is an affordable, renewable and a carbon neutral resource. Despite overseas findings including the US Environmental Protection Agency deciding there is a lack of evidence linking PM10 to health problems our law makers will not budge. As our elderly struggle to make ends meet they are being denied the right to cheaply heat their homes. When will this nonsense stop. Neville Male, President, Nelson Grey Power Inc. Could you please put the word out for me, my brand new skateboard has been stolen from Kingsley Pl in Richmond. I am a mother of three and it is the one activity I have kept for myself, hard to believe I know but I have been skating since I was five and don't want to give it up anytime soon, but its awfully hard to afford a new board with three kids to provide for. It is distinguished by its camouflage trucks and the board has metallic light blue and white paint on the underside. Thanks you, from sk8er mum :). Gr wing Things With Robyn Hollis
As we go to print with this, the second to last column for 2012, I can’t help but reflect on the year and an old saying comes to mind – “the more things change – the more they remain the same”. Seasons come and go, fashions come and go, plants come and go, even people come and go, but at the end of it all the simple enjoyment of time spent with family and friends and the pleasure of “growing things” is really all that matters. Over the last couple of weekends I had the privilege of being invited to judge two of the Nelson Horticultural Society’s annual shows. One was at Growables Nelson – I loved seeing the beautiful displays of cut flowers, peonies and roses to die for – a daunting task to select only one winner in most cases! The other was at the Richmond A&P show. This always impresses me with the amazing displays from the local schools. Tables laden with sand saucers in a myriad of colours, vegetable animals – a regular zoo of them - beautifully decorated cupcakes with garden themes. The work and imagination was stunning and it is a real tonic to see little ones having fun with plants and growing their own veges etc. Good on the schools for encouraging and nurturing this very worthwhile skill. We have some amazing gardeners here in Nelson and some of the entrants in the vegetable section were truly superb – made my efforts look rather average to say the least…. however, we all have different skills! Keep up the good work kids and others - I hope to be back next year.

Shop 'n' Win now a record breaker
Shop ‘n’ Win has already smashed all of its previous records, with a whopping 60,000 people now entered in the competition. Shop ‘n’ Win gives one lucky Richmond shopper the chance to win $5000 cash for Christmas, and the owner of the business that the winner shopped at also wins $2000 cash. The promotion is run by Waimea Weekly, Richmond Unlimited and all of the participating businesses. Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says the overwhelming response highlights exactly how wide the locally-owned paper’s readership is. “The response from all of the retailers has been phenomenal.” Shop ‘n’ Win will continue until December 16, with the winner of the competition being announced in the Waimea Weekly’s holiday issue.

Injuries strike college touch team Injuries have struck the Nelson College for Girls touch team, with four starting players either ruled out of this week's national championship or being forced to play minor roles. The worst injury has affected the team's star player with New Zealand Women's Touch Blacks starter Rebecca Kersten set for up to nine months on the sideline, according to coach Cyril Collier. The draw hasn't done Nelson College for Girls any favours either. They are scheduled to play defending champions Hamilton Girls' High School in the opening clash. But despite the injuries, Cyril is adamant the team will not go down without a fight. "We were looking extremely strong and we were hopeful of at least making the top four. The injuries didn't come at the beginning of the season either. These players are show-stoppers, experienced players,"
says Cyril, speaking at a team fundraiser on Saturday. "We've had to bring in four absolute newbies which has slowed the whole progress down. But in saying that, that's just how sport is. You go there with the strongest team possible and do the best you can." Nelson College for Girls finished sixth place last year with a relatively young squad. Cyril's top finish with a college team was second place in the 90s, back when he had a five year stint with the Nelson College for Girls team. Having been back at the helm for another five years, Cyril says the school's top finish in his current reign was third place. There are only two Year 13 students in the current squad, meaning the team will be able to retain the core of its players for the next few years, but the focus was still on this weekend's play.

In-form sprinters on track for nationals
Phillip Rollo
Early season form will give a contingent of Nelson sprinters plenty of confidence ahead of this weekend's New Zealand Secondary School Track & Field Championship in Dunedin. The six sprinters, all coached by Nayland College teacher Dennis Kale, will be expected to qualify deep into the final rounds of the competition, with Jonas Kale a realistic chance at claiming a gold medal in the junior boys' 100m event. Jonas ran a personal best 11.39 seconds at the recent Tasman Championship, following that up with a wind assisted time of 11.24 seconds just days later. Historical results suggest Jonas will have to run a personal best to be guaranteed first place, but the weather conditions in Dunedin could dictate exactly how quick each finalist will run. Dennis says the eight finalists should run under 11.5 seconds. "The winner could run 11.25 seconds or something, so they're likely to all be within five meters of each other," he says. "It's a fast track but it can be quite wind affected both ways. We do a lot of hard work on the track so I don't want him to go there and run just one good race, he has to progress through the rounds." The group's second best shot at reaching a final will come from Adam Pauling, who

Photo: Phillip Rollo. will race in the senior boys' 200m grade for the first time. Dennis believes he could make the top eight, having ran a personal best of 23.09 seconds recently. Jonas and Adam will link up with Mitchell Chandler, who will be entered in the senior boys 100m and 200m, and middle distance runner Thomas Anderson for the 4x400m relay. The three girls in the group; Hannah Shepherd, Madisen Stanley and Bonita Morris-
sey-Smith are realistic chances of making the top 16. Hannah has dropped more than one second off her 200m PB and goes into the national event with personal bests of 13.14 seconds for the 100m and 26.94 seconds for the 200m. Madisen will be entered in the senior girls' 400m and has ran a personal best time of 62.8 seconds. Bonita will compete in the longer 800m event, and has a personal best of 2 minutes 30.2 seconds.
The six athletes have been training together for the past 18 weeks, preparing themselves for the biggest event of the high school track season. The main club national championship is in March, meaning school students need to peak four months earlier than the seniors athletes. "They've done really well so far. I think they're hungry for it, but it's hard to tell if they're excited or not because they're pretty laid back."
Gamble doesn’t pay off for Stoke/Nayland cricketers
Stoke/Nayland bowler Brendan Hodgson fires a ball off against Waimea Toi Toi United on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Stoke/Nayland’s unusual decision to declare at 49/8 didn’t pay off, with the side going on to lose outright. The result means Harrington’s Beer Café Waimea Toi Toi United is now the Nelson two-day cricket competition’s top qualifier for the second year in a row. Car Company Stoke/Nayland found themselves struggling at 10/7 at Jubilee Park with four players being sent to the sheds without a run to their name. Mitchell Ross top scored with 21 runs before stand in skipper Alex Coles declared, robbing WTTU of another first innings point. WTTU nearly doubled their opponents score

in reply, being bowled out for 83 after just 33.4 overs. When Stoke/Nayland found themselves at 3/3 in the second innings, it looked like things were going from bad to worse. However, Alex and Jacob Beleski did manage to add some sort of stability to the scoreboard, scoring 33 and 21 runs as the side reached 88 all out. But it only took 12.2 overs for WTTU to put the match beyond doubt, as Mason Thelin reached 30 not out in the defending champion’s 59/4 reply. Both teams will contest the Car Company Nelson two-day cricket final at Saxton Oval on December 15 and 16.

Cycle trail’s stage one now complete Phillip Rollo The first full stage of the Great Taste Cycle Trail is now open to the public, meaning it can finally be marketed around the country to out-of-town cyclists. The final touches on the $250,000 80 metre suspension bridge across the Waimea River were completed on Friday, officially connecting Richmond to Mapua. While there is still temporary access on Lower Queen St, due to birds nesting where part of the coastal route will go, cyclists can now pedal from Nelson to Brightwater or from Nelson to Mapua. The new suspension bridge across the Waimea River has a near identical design to the first bridge that was constructed across the Wairoa River. Tasman District Council development engineer Dugald Ley says they had learnt from the mistakes of the first bridge, which means the ramps have been built with a much lower gradient. “It gives us and the cycle trust something to market,” he says. “You can do a day trip to Mapua and back and this is bridge is crucial element of stage one.” The government gave $2.1 million towards stage one of the project, with TDC adding a further $1 million on top of that. The government’s funding was allocated under the restriction that it must be open by Christmas. While the bridge will be officially unveiled and named in January, it is now open for public use. Dugald expects that Mapua businesses will benefit
