Spotlight brightest on Nelson Nelson has pulled off several “huge coups” with the coverage it has received so far during the Rugby World Cup, says Nelson Tasman Tourism. Last week the city featured on the country’s two major current affairs shows and in most of New Zealand’s major newspapers, including The Press, The New Zealand Herald and The Dominion Post. It also found itself taking up several column inches in some major Australian newspapers, including the Sydney Morning Herald. With the three Rugby World Cup games now behind it the city is counting the benefits to its national and international profile with a
whopping 150 plus media being hosted by Nelson Tasman Tourism. The major draw-cards outside the three official games, was the re-enactment match that more than 40 media personal attended, the hosting of Italy and the ‘Hug an Aussie Day’ dreamed up by Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio last week. The ‘Hug an Aussie Day’ featured in dozens of newspapers and on several television shows, giving huge coverage to the region says Nelson Tasman Tourism head Lynda Keene. “It was always our goal to be the ‘best host region for RWC’ and when you read media comments we know we are on track to succeed.”
RWC 2011 Nelson regional director Susan Coleman, says she has been delighted with the way Nelson has hosted the cup to date. “At face value the coverage we’ve got and potential impact of that we are very happy with.” Lynda says the impact of the large media contingent may not be obvious to locals but it has been huge. “While many of the stories, articles, images and much of the footage is publicized overseas, many locals won’t realise just how much fantastic, invaluable profile the region is receiving. “RWC has offered golden publicity opportunities for us,” she says.

which represents 2147 of the country’s principals, more than 90 percent. National Standards aims to measure students in key subjects including maths and English. Those results are then passed onto parents so they can gauge the rate at which their child is learning. It will bring more accountability to teachers and schools, says education minister Anne Tolley. But Paul says it is a “low trust, top down model” that has disenfranchised schools. “They want to somehow drive more out of the system but you’re not going to get more out of teachers, schools and parents by waving a big stick and demanding more. If you involve them about how we can make it better, isn’t that more likely to get the outcomes that we want? At the moment there is a sense that there is no trust there. “We feel the voice of the profession is
being ignored and trivialised by the government. The argument has big appeal, because who doesn’t want to lift achievement? But they are going about it the wrong way.” He says the reason for low achievement isn’t a lack of effort from schools: “We can tell you who they [low achievers] are already and we can tell you they are disproportionally Maori and Pacific and we want to do something about that. But they are also disproportionally from familys in poverty situations. There is a very strong link between poverty and low achievement, so by asking schools to do more for those children by measuring them more isn’t going to affect the issues. We have some of the highest levels of poverty in the Western world, that’s our shame. Not our 15 percent that might be low achievers, that you might actually expect. “We are not all going to be academics, success is measured in various ways and that’s the other danger of this pol-

icy, that somehow we are all going to be academics and all get UE [university entrance]. The danger of having high stakes around those core subjects is that you then minimise the wider curriculum, the very things that some children will be successful in. “We want children that are creative, flexible, problem solvers, not robots. Don’t suck the joy out of school by training everyone to focus on just two subjects,” he says. Paul says he will push those issues and others facing principals when he moves into his new role. “It is exciting and balanced with a healthy bit of anxiety and trepidation because I’ll be away from my family and school for long periods of the year. But it will be exciting for me personally and I’m looking forward to it.” Paul says he is looking forward to working with the new government after this year’s election, be it either National or Labour.

An estimated 7000 cubic metres of sewage was spilled into the Waimea Inlet yesterday morning. fore the station was repaired at around 9am Monday. The current heavy rain meant a large proportion of the spill was in fact stormwater runoff. Council is advising the public not to have water contact in the Waimea Inlet and Nelson Haven until this Thursday. Council also reinforces shellfish should not be collected from these areas at anytime.

Businesses to give beaches a spring clean A call is going out for groups to sign up for a big community spring clean of Tasman Bay beaches, after it proved such a hit with local businesses last November. Last year more than 950 volunteers collected 10.4 tonnes of rubbish from a staggering 291 kilometres of beach between Cable Bay and Abel Tasman. The Department of Conservation in partnership with Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Nelmac, is running the second Big Beach Clean-up on Saturday 19 November.
Many groups who participated last year had such a great time they have already signed up to clean the same stretch of coast this year, with around 30 of 50 coastal sections already claimed. Nelson and Tasman Mayors Aldo Miccio and Richard Kempthorne applaud the initiative. “It’s a great way for the community to show they care about the environment. Last year’s effort was outstanding and clubs, groups and businesses are encouraged to get organised and get involved,” says Aldo.
The 50 coastal sections to be cleaned are of varying lengths and ranked easy, medium and difficult in terms of the ease of access and the terrain. Groups are invited to sign up to clean a section suited to the size of their group and capability of their members. DOC Motueka community relations programme manager Rudy Tetteroo said the Big Beach Clean-up aimed to tidy the beaches in time for summer and make them safer for coastal wildlife. “Sadly much of the rubbish found washed
Stunned student wins science fair Science Fair chief judge Des Duthie says passion and effort were the key factors in selecting Aleisha Shutte as the winner for 2011. The Cawthron Institute Science and Technology Fair awards were held at Broadgreen Intermediate School on Friday evening and it was Tasman schools which dominated the major results. Aleisha, of Waimea College, discovered the effect of exposure on the emotion exhibited by a photograph and Des says her effort in a “very difficult concept” made her stand above the rest. Des says the number of schools holding their own fair has increased dramatically. “We actually limit the number of entries to 120 each year and it’s over-subscribed by three times that each year. With so many schools taking part but only a limit on places it has really increased the quality of enCawthron Institute Science and Technology Fair winner Aleisha tries.” Shutte with her award. NEW POLICE COUNTER: Work to upgrade the public counter and watch house area of the Nelson Police Station has been completed ahead of schedule. The new area provides a greater level of security and privacy for visitors to the station. Senior Sergeant Stu Koefoed says staff were very pleased with the new work space which has better access, air conditioning, modernised systems and natural lighting. “We set up a temporary public counter which was pretty basic, but functional and it worked well. The new watch house and public counter have been long overdue for an upgrade. It’s a 50 year-old building and it looked like it.”

Historic hotel gets a fresh look
Property developer Aaron McNaughton has added one of the city’s oldest buildings to his portfolio after the 30 year old purchased the old Royal Hotel earlier this year, but the old hotel has given him a surprise new job. Aaron never planned to run a bar when he bought the hotel, but when the previous tenants surrendered their lease, he had to figure out pretty quick how to run a bar. Aaron says naming the bar was simple as he just used the original title of the Nelson Hotel, where in 1868, the Nelson Rugby Football Club
was founded. The bar will cater for a diverse range of people, with pool, darts and TV’s in ‘The Rugby Club’ back bar, whereas the front lounge bar has a distinct old-school kiwiana feel with art deco couches and some new-school urban art. The Nelson Hotel’s point of difference is locally brewed craft beer on tap, to go with great wine and local produce while you can still watch the rugby. “We are the only pub in town with McCashin’s on tap,” says Aaron. The original Nelson Hotel was built in the 1860’s and is on the corner of Bridge and Collingwood Sts.
Owner of Nelson Hotel, formerly the Royal Hotel, Aaron McNaughton will be running the business himself after the lease-holders went out of business. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Five large container vessels, two fertiliser vessels, a large car carrier, two Navy ships departed, the Westport dredge departed and will return soon, two mussel barges, the Tasman Bay shuttle service, 17 large fishing vessel movements, two large una fishing vessels all moving around the port kept the pilots and stevedores very busy last week. • Port Nelson pilots are grateful to the vessels that stop and wait for their manoeuvring to be complete before they pass. A wise choice. • How long do you wait after someone is overdue from a boating trip, before you raise the alarm? I asked a police officer and he said as soon as you have a concern. I asked a few wives and they said – size matters… the bigger the boat the longer they would wait. An 8 year old said 5 minutes. Good for you Olly. • This Harbour Master suggests, at most you wait 15 minutes, then you attempt to contact him or her on the radio or cell phone. If you get a response and an updated time of arrival that’s great. If you don’t get a response it might be time to call the best friend or the club and see if they are there or ask if the trailer is still at the club? Then you ring the police and advise them you are concerned about someone overdue from a boating trip. • Survival time in Nelson’s waters would be quite long if all were wearing lifejackets. Most drowning boating fatalities are because people were not. If you were due back at 7pm it’s only a short time before its nightfall and then boaties in trouble are much harder to find. • If you are the one late home and people have been concerned enough to contact the police, you really can believe they care. And don’t forget to thank them. • Last week I was advised of some irresponsible jet skiers speeding too close to kayakers and the shore. If you can identify them I would like to hear from you. Ring Nelson City Council on 548 0200 and ask for the harbourmaster. • Spring tides: The big range tides over 4.5m have brought some debris down into the harbour. Be careful out there, keep a good look out. If in doubt – don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

in-law would not be impressed if the Wallabies got a bad reception in his home town. His wife Kim is also Australian and two of his three children were born across the Tasman. Although the Australian skipper was appreciative of the hugging, he says the public reception has been “nothing but supportive” during their stay in New Zealand.
The Wallabies must have wondered what hit them. Used to making bone-crunching tackles on this trip to New Zealand, they arrived in Nelson last week only for the city’s mayor to greet them with a hug. Mayor Aldo Miccio declared last Wednesday “Hug an Aussie Day” in Nelson, to celebrate the arrival of the Australian rugby team to the city for their pool C clash with Russia on Saturday and to show visitors from across the ditch that kiwis really do love them. Free parking a success Uniquely Nelson is hoping to extend its Free Parking on Tuesdays initiative, after its survey showed total backing for the idea. The retail promotions group worked with Nelson City Council to implement free parking on Tuesdays over the winter months. The Free Parking on Tuesdays ran until September 6 and was very popular with both retailers and their customers according to a post-campaign survey, says Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy
Madigan. “A whopping 100 percent of respondents would like to see Tuesday Free Parking happen again in the future, with 67 percent saying they noticed an increase in foot traffic and 58 percent saying they noticed an increased spend on Free Parking Tuesdays.” Cathy says she hopes to work with council to look at ways the free parking initiative can be extended over winter, and possibly at other times of the year.

The thought of riding on some of the roughest roads in the region has Neil Albury smiling. But the thought of doing it on a scooter brings a slight wince to his face. Neil is one of the newbies, signing up for the second Survivor Scooter Challenge that will see a group of people ride, off road, from Marlborough, through Nelson and Tasman and finish on the West Coast. Founder Jason Monopoli says the challenge is for anyone and everyone with many of the starters not motorbike riders. Neil says he signed up for the challenge for a bit of fun and to try something new. “I’m in to this sort of thing and when I saw it I thought it looked like great fun, and with great people, so I gave Jason an email and here we go.” Neil bought the scooter locally and took it to Morley Motorcycles for a tune up before the race this month. A lifetime behind the lens Andrew Board
Wilfred Tunney doesn’t have any of his most famous photographs anymore, they are in the archives of the newspapers he worked three decades for – fortunately, his memory can paint the most vivid picture. Wilfred, or Wilf, spent his career working as a photographer, from the British Army to the Auckland Star newspaper. He covered royal visits, All Black tests, spoke to amazing people and even witnessed a shooting in broad daylight – all of it captured on film. He moved to Nelson in 1982 after his school teacher wife had enough of Auckland. She took a job at Hira School and he hung up the lenses. He has lived here ever since. But the job that would make him a semicelebrity in Palmerston North and Auckland started in an army barracks in northern England, a couple of years after World War 2. Wilf was drafted into the army in the military service conscription that was in force in the UK at the time. While in the army a position in the publications department arose for a photographer. He “bullshited” his way into it and began a career that would span the next three and a half decades. “I thought this would be pretty easy when I applied and didn’t have any experience. But the army aren’t that bloody dumb and soon realised I wasn’t up to the scale they wanted, so sent me away for some training and I was taught it.” While in the army his role was to take photographs for demonstration booklets and training manuals. When his three year term was over he returned to his pre-army role as an apprentice construction engineer. However, he didn’t sit the final exams and was at a loose end before a chance visit with a New Zealand immigration officer convinced him to move to New Zealand. He came here in 1952 as an engineer and
worked on the Tokoroa paper mill before deciding to get back into photography by placing an advert in the Manawatu Evening Standard stating: “Photographer, exarmy. Looking for photographic work.” “Then I got a letter in the mail and it was from the advertising manager of the Manawatu Standard asking me to go in and talk to him, because he thought he might have a job for me. As a result of that I became their first ever photographer.” The paper hired Wilf to take the photos and operate a new electronic engraving machine that they had just bought. He says he can remember the first photo he ever took for the paper, although it was never printed. “After I was hired we went to town to buy some camera equipment, on the way back we came across a car that had crashed. The driver, a woman, died from the accident so we didn’t use the photos.” Wilf only lasted three years at the paper because the two brothers who owned it, one the editor the other the advertising manager, didn’t get along. “The two brothers were always at logger heads and I wasn’t accepted by Jimmy Nash, the editor, because I was Norman’s choice. It didn’t matter what I did and how good I was, he would never accept me. So I said I’m out of here, I’m sick of being the meat in the sandwich with you and your bloody brother.” So Wilf quit, headed to the pub and wondered how he was going to tell his wife he was now unemployed. But the first person he ran into at the hotel was the editor of the rival paper, the Manawatu Times, the region’s morning paper. “He said G’day, we got talking and I told him I had quit. He then asked if I wanted to come work for him because his photographer had just quit. I said great, I’ll see you in the morning and that was that.” For the next few years Wilf built up an impressive list of contacts in Palmerston

Bringing 20 years of cosmetic and appearance medicine to Nelson Dr Robert Beulink is one of New Zealand’s leading and highly experienced doctors in the field of cosmetic surgery and appearance medicine. Commencing in 1992, he was one of the very first practitioners in this field in New Zealand, and was instrumental in introducing the new concept of ‘appearance medicine’ to New Zealand. After 20 years of beautifying Canterbury with his cosmetic and appearance medicine procedures, Dr Beulink has bought his vast knowledge, expertise and experience to Nelson Beauty Therapy and has been running regular clinics there for the last 18 months. Dr Beulink says cosmetic and appearance medicine is a very personal decision which he discusses carefully with his clients so he can provide options that lead to a suitable treatment plan. “Cosmetic procedures are a lot more acceptable these days compared to the 1990’s, but people still don’t want others to know that they have had some work done,” he explains. “The secret is making sure any work that is done looks entirely natural.” Combining with the therapists at Nelson Beauty Therapy, that’s exactly what this team focuses on – giving a fresher, natural result.
When Dermalogica meets skin, skin health is redefined. For over 25 years, Dermalogica has been dedicated to delivering skin health results through education, innovation, and professional recommendation, not through frilly packaging, promises of miracle cures, or overblown hype. When Dermalogica was born in 1986 it immediately upset the prevailing paradigm of beauty and glamour by classifying skin care as a health issue as opposed to a cosmetic concern. Just as they removed common irritants from the ingredient menu, Dermalogica also introduced a powerful new element into the brand identity- the specialised expertise of the professional skin therapist. Dermalogica is sold only where professional consultation and professional treatments are performed by professional skin therapists and Bedelia is excited to welcome the brand to Nelson Beauty Therapy. In 25 years, Dermalogica has become the number one choice of skin care professionals worldwide, prescribed more often than any other product available. Gardening
TUESDAY 4 October 2011
New gardening column launched
Today Nelson Weekly launches a new fortnightly column especially to help you get growing things. Local gardening expert Robyn Hollis has joined the Nelson Weekly team as a columnist, bringing a local flavour on gardening in our region. The column is a light-hearted look at gardening with tips and a question-and-answer section aimed at helping give you practical advice and knowledge about your garden. The column is not aimed at gardening experts, it is to help regular folk get the most out of their garden. Robyn’s interest in plants was sparked many years ago by Kevin Garnett, head gardener of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. She attended nearly 12 months of night classes in which he and his partner Keryn instilled in her some of the passion and excitement of garden design and plants. She then worked at a garden centre in Christchurch for two years before moving to Nelson and beginning at Down to Earth Garden Centre, where she worked for nine years, with Gordon and Heather Barr. “Gordy was my mentor in this job and I have a lot to thank him for. He encouraged and enthused my small efforts and so my love of plants just kept on growing. Some of our readers will probably remember me from there,” she says. Robyn was then asked to host ‘Up the Garden Path’ with Ian Ferguson (or Ferg) on Newstalk ZB, where she stayed for five years. She says she is excited about writing a gardening column. “When the Weekly asked me if I would like to write a garden column I was very excited, but as I have never written before, figured ‘here we go again, reinvent yourself and give it a try’. “I will try to give you a garden column that will assist you, inform you, and also help you to get the most out of your gardening. To do this I will need some help from you and would really like to have your feedback, questions, problems etc. Together we can make your gardening fun and interesting as well as productive,” she says.

Tips
Thisks wee
• Time to feed most plants in the garden now. • A dose of Sequestrene around and over your hardworking Daphne and around the base of any Citrus is a good thing to do now. • Sequestrene is a tonic rather than a food which gives acid loving plants a boost and enables them to take up the food that you will give them. Epson salts is a quick fix for yellowing leaves on Daphnes but to my mind not as good. • Citrus also need feeding now (or could have been done last month). They are gross feeders needing a good quality citrus food or extra potassium and some good compost with blood
and bone for those who do not want to chemical feed. • Roses are starting to leaf up and need a feed now also. Burnetts Gold (they also have a citrus food) or Thrive for roses – if in doubt about what to use ask your garden centre staff – they will assist you. • Watch for the first signs of the aphids now – I saw some on my new leaves the other morning – so although I do not spray much, I will have to use the Mavrik or Shield for a first hit. Mavrik is kinder to the bees but Shield is a systemic spray which gets into the plant and means less spraying in the long run. Super Shield is also good but is only a contact spray which means you will have to spray a little more often.
fails, read the instructions! Do not be tempted to add more when spraying – the right amount is important, you will not get a better “kill” with a stronger mix and you run the risk of burning new foliage.
Q& A If you have any questions for our Q & A section please email them to: editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz. I will do my best to help. I think that will do for this week folks - next fortnight we will chat about lawn care, also feeding -- gardens are a hungry lot -- and the vege patch.
• Always spray in the early morning before the sun, wind (and bees) come out. You can add a spray fixitive to your mix but always, when all else

Brodie Lumsden and Scott Higgs form local Synth pop/hip-hop duo ‘Flee The City’.
Duo keen to light up summer Jonathan McKeown Nelson Synth Pop duo – ‘Flee The City’ aren’t about to pack and up run away just yet, as they reckon Nelson is the place to be for music over the summer. The duo of Brodie Lumsden and Scott Higgs released their debut EP ‘Bright Lights’ just over a month ago, and the best thing about it is you can own the EP for free. “We wanted to put it out there, show four songs with different elements in each, to show our versatility, and then give it away for free,” says Brodie. “Free music is the way to go these days to start with, otherwise you won’t get heard.” That ploy is proving particularly successful, with the EP already getting over 1000 plays on music hosting website ReverbNation. “There is hundreds of thousands of bands on there and we got up to number eight on the New Zealand charts for that in our first two weeks,” says Scott. They have also been able to reach an international audience, with plays from at least ten different countries including Denmark, the US and Australia. In true Kiwi style ‘Flee The City’ have opted to

the do-it-yourself road to fame and fortune. With no money coming from sales, the duo has taken advantage of social media as a launching platform. “Facebook has been a really good tool for us; to download the EP all you need to do is ‘like’ us and it automatically shares it to your page,” says Brodie. The pair says it’s very hard to describe the music they play or compare it to other music on the airwaves. “We sort of get all this stuff that we like together and mash it up into mainstream pop music, so it’s tricky to compare.” Scott attempts to describe the sound: “It’s real clubby electro beats, dub-step beats and hip-hop rolled into a mainstream sound.” But for all the difficulty in describing the sound, the guys know exactly what they want to bring to fans. “We are not just a DJ set, we want that live connection with the crowd using live vocals and keys as well as lighting and visuals,” says Brodie. If you want to familiarize yourself with some of their tunes before the summer music festivals hit town, or just expand your music collection for free you can download the EP risk free, at facebook.com/FleeTheCity or reverbnation.com/ fleethecitymusic.

MARKET DAY: Steel Smith Glen Van Der Leij in tune with La Vida Quartette in the background. The last of the three market days on Trafalgar St, held in conjuction with the Game On Festival, was held on Friday. It had a slight Russian theme to cater for our visitors, says organiser Huup Waagen. “We gave it a bit of a hammer and sickle feel, the Russian symbol of beautiful music and industrial workmanship.” Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Song and dance as Savage Club turns 50 Andrew Board For 50 years the Nelson Savage Club has been lighting up halls, rest homes and schools around the region with its brand of variety entertainment, and this weekend it will celebrate those years the best way it knows how – with song and dance. The Savage Club was founded in London in 1857 as an alternative to the gentleman clubs of the time; its name was taken by a little-known and recently deceased poet by the name of Richard Savage. Its choice of name was intended to rile the establishment. It didn’t take long for the concept to take off and by the early 1900’s Savage Clubs were being established in New Zealand, even one in Nelson. But the First World War dwindled its numbers so much that the Nelson chapter folded. In 1961 a group resurrected the club in Nelson, and today it continues to operate, with around 50 members attending its monthly shows in Tahunanui. Past president Philipa Hardman says the group regularly plays at concerts around the city, in rest homes and church halls. The brand of entertainment makes it a spe-

One minute you’ll be listening to classical piano, six minutes later it will be a comedy skit and then a singing group. There is always something new.” The group also welcomes non-accom-
plished entertainers and is strictly noncritical. “Because we are all doing our own thing we don’t compete with each other, we can’t, because we are all different, so we are really supportive,” she says. The group is welcoming eight other clubs

Summerset set to unveil retirement village plans to public Summerset is in the final stages of completing the plans for its brand new retirement village in Nelson and is set to unveil them at a community day on October 7. Summerset, a leading operator and developer of nationwide retirement villages, settled its purchase of the former Gracefield Resort earlier this week and is now the official owner of the Stoke based village. The community day starts at 3pm and Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio will be on hand to unveil the plans and add an official touch to Summerset’s move in to the city. Demand for the day has been high and Summerset is asking members of the public to please contact Carol Pitman at the village on 538 0000 and register for the event.

An open weekend will be held on October 8 and 9. This will be open for the public and no registration is needed. The company is also in the final stage of hiring a local Nelson person to be village manager. They will join fellow Nelsonians, sales manager Carol Pitman and construction manager Dave Anderson. Construction on the first stage of the 8ha Sargeson St site is moving at lightning speed with roofs on and frames up on the 26 initial villas and townhouses. The village’s newest residents have been told they will be in their brand new homes before the end of the year. CEO Norah Barlow said this will enable the new residents to get the most out of the village’s lovely location.
“They’ll be there for summer. The village is named Summerset in the Sun as an ode to Nelson’s exceptional weather. We’re very pleased our newest residents will really be able to experience the essence of that lifestyle. “I think the public will love our village plan. They’ve been a long time in the making as we wanted to get them just right. This village is a true example of what I would call a ‘new generation’ retirement village. The facilities and the lifestyle it offers are going to be top-rate.” In the long term the village is expecting to add up to 40 jobs in to the area. The company also prefers to use local contractors at all its sites.

Warm welcome for running man Running the length of New Zealand you need all the encouragement you can get, so when Jup Brown made it to Nelson last week he was rapt to see people come out to support him. Jup is running from Stewart Is to Cape Reinga as part of an awareness drive for Stoke Awareness. His arrival in Nel-
son last Thursday marked the half way stage in his journey and he was greeted by a couple of dozen locals, including Tasman Makos skipper Andrew Goodman and Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. Jup says he was stoked to make it to Nelson and says he is feeling stronger as the journey goes on but the support from people
across the country also makes it easier. Jup is now in the North Island and hopes to make it to the top of the country by November 7. So far he has raised close to $10,000. For more information about Jup’s journey or to find out how to donate to his cause, visit www.runningnz.co.nz.

Volleyball HQ right here in Nelson Andrew Board New Zealand’s head office for one of the world’s largest sports can’t be found in Wellington, Auckland or even Christchurch. Volleyball New Zealand calls Richmond home. The head office of the sport moved to Richmond about 18 months ago after its general manager, Hope resident Pam Brodie, told the board she had enough of commuting to the capital and was returning full time to Nelson. She said they could either move the office with her, or find a replacement. The board opted for the former and now employs two locals with another two part time staff in Christchurch. Pam says having the office in Richmond is a big deal for the region and shows that any sporting code can operate from anywhere. “I hated going to Wellington, I was the mother in the back room, living with my son and his partner and I
hated spending my week in Wellington. When I’d fly home on a Friday night I just loved coming back.” She says the future of the sport in New Zealand is through beach volleyball, as it is too tough to find 16 top and dedicated athletes, in an amateur sport, to take on the world’s super powers who have all the resources in the world. “But we can produce two outstanding beach volleyball players, and the goal is to start getting some of those teams to the Olympics.” Pam – who remarkably is married to the president of New Zealand Volleyball, Allan Brodie – is joined in her Nelson office by operations manager Julie Carpinter. She says the sport is “sustainable” in this country but only gets a limited grant from the government, via SPARC. Pam says Tasman has a strong bond with volleyball and is one of the top performing regions in New Zealand, so it is a nice fit that it’s HQ is also here. “Tasman punches well above its weight in volleyball.”

Kiwis squash Aussie’s in trans-tasman clash

The roof of the Nelson Squash Rackets Club shook with jubilation as New Zealand defeated Australia in the trans-Tasman Masters series for the first time since the turn of the millennium. In fact it was only the fourth time that New Zealand has won since the competition began in 1984. The two test series got off to the friendliest of starts as the usually firm rivals embraced each other. In a warm welcome from Mayor Aldo Miccio he declared it was Hugan-Aussie Day in Nelson, and hugs were sheepishly exchanged. The competitive tone was then set as the national anthems were beautifully performed by local singer Dominique Donaghy. The six grades from 35+ to 60+ were played in both the Men’s and Women’s division, with competitors from travelling from a far afield as Tasmania and Western Australia. With the hosts winning the first test 9-3 Australia began the second test on the back foot as the galleries were packed to the rafters to watch New Zea-
Football girls make top team Three of the region’s top women footballers say competing against boys during the winter had primed them for ASB Women’s Youth League selection, and hope to show a new physical side in the upcoming season. Fourteen year-old Juliana Los has been selected in the Mainland Pride squad along with last season’s players Lara Malcolm and Young Football Fern defender Emily Jensen. Lara says playing the winter season for Suburbs Blue Crew in the Robbie’s Bar & Bistro 17th grade against male counterparts has seen them take their physical game to the next level. “For me personally, in the women’s league I don’t get much action in goal,” says the 17 yearold goal keeper. “Against the boys I have to be on my game a lot more and it’s a lot busier. It’s also a much higher level of football compared to what we get here and I’m quite excited to be actually playing this year.” Juliana and Lara also play for Nelson College for Girls, while Emily, 16, attends Waimea College. Emily is currently away with the Young Football Ferns in a three match series with Australia in Auckland. The ASB Women’s Youth League is the premier women’s football competition in New Zealand and the girls agree it’s the best way to make a name for themselves while they are still at secondary school. “It’s really exciting,” says Juliana, a central midfielder. “I just want to prove myself, up my game and play to a higher level. Basically just to develop as a footballer. I aspire to that and hopefully one day soon I will make a New Zealand team.” Juliana is the youngest member of the team that will compete in the Southern Conference of this season’s ASB Women’s Youth League, but packs a punch in the middle of the park despite her small frame. “I do my best,” she says. Mainland Pride open their league account against Capital on October 15 at ASB Football Park in Christchurch.
land reclaim the title after a long 12 years. The final result of the second night was 8-4, New Zealand claiming the two test series winners 2-0. Christchurch resident Wayne Seebeck, the New Zealand Masters director of squash, says it could be a good omen for New Zealand sport. “Previously we have only won it three out of 19 attempts, which is the same ratio as the Rugby World Cup, being one out of six.” With no Nelson based players in the tournament, the Nelson Squash Rackets Club’s application was chosen because of the fantastic facilities. “The team at Nelson Club has spent thousands of man hours to regenerate the club for an international event.” Wayne says all their effort paid off as the club hosted an exceedingly successful event, not just on the court. “The energy they put out is huge and the energy that came back to them was the same, they were rewarded with the sheer enthusiasm of the Australian and New Zealand competitors.”
IN BRIEF SAILING: The first race of the Vining Ship Brokers Spring Series took place last Wednesday night with 13 division one and 10 division two yachts lined up for race one of the summer sailing season, in a 17-20 knot southwesterly breeze. In division one, G Force, skippered by Hilton Grant, aboard the Great Barrier Express catamaran, was first home only 15 seconds ahead of Noel Eichbaum’s Blackout, with Robert Greenwood’s Wild Oats a 1 min 10 sec back in third. Handicap winner was Wild Oats. The second division saw the closest racing of both fleets with five boats plying for the lead. Line honors going to John Cotton’s South Seas Clipper, second to Lee Nixon and Marijke Boers’ Nattai. The handicap winner was Jerden Bronstring’s Magic Moments. FISHING: The new-look Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club was launched on Sunday. To join, give Doug McKay a call on 547 7433.
