Historic street sick of historic power lines Andrew Board

Residents on The Wood’s Elliot St say they happily embrace its historic status, but they are fed up with its historic power lines. For 14 years residents have tried to get its overhead lines put underground and successfully pushed to get the ducting laid in 1998 when the road was dug up for storm water upgrades. But the ducting remains

empty and successive attempts to coax Nelson City Council into putting the lines underground have failed. Elliot St is one of the few streets left in The Wood with overhead lines and residents have made submissions over the past three years to get the power lines put under ground with no luck. Resident Neil Deans says enough is enough. “I’d rather be told that we’ll never get money out of the coun-

cil than keep getting told to put in submissions year after year that don’t get noticed. It’s a waste of everybody’s time if it’s just a fob off. It’s a bit disheartening. If it’s not going to happen just tell us that.” Next year the street, which is home to the oldest state houses in Nelson and was given heritage status in 1993, will celebrate its centenary. They say they hope their “100 year old lines” will not be around for the

party. Residents were last year given a figure of $73,000 to do the job. Nelson Electricity Ltd says it has been in discussions with the residents and has agreed in the past to pay for the new lines, leaving a shortfall of around $60,000 for the council. Residents say they are happy to pay for new lines

Come garden at the Brook Calling all wannabe green-thumbs. A Brook resident is inviting her neighbours to the suburbs’ community gardens this Saturday in an effort to boost the number of people using the Waimarama Brook Community Gardens. Helen Lynch is a regular user of the gardens and says she would like to see more families using the facility to plant vegetables, meet their neighbours, learn about growing and to have fun. So she, along with other users of the gardens, are planning a get-together at the gardens this Saturday from 1pm. She is inviting people from all over the region to come along, but would especially like to see people from the Brook area come and use their gardens. “Ten years ago this place was packed full of people and it still gets used a lot for the education but I’d like to see more people come along and learn how to grow vegetables by doing it alongside other families from the Brook.” The gardens are already well known for hosting educational workshops. Helen is hoping enough people will regularly come

from their houses to the road. Phil Goodall, of NEL, says the company is happy to assist residents to put lines underground and they’ve tried twice to make that a reality at Elliot St, without success. Another resident, Geoff Morrissey, says it’s ironic that the street was the first to get new high speed broadband last month but still can’t sort out its power line issue. “Our view is ‘let’s catch up with the 20th century’, broadband will take us into the 21st but we just might not have power to run it.” The residents say they’ve tried on and off for years to get the power lines changed and feel

they have done their bit in renovating houses for the heritage president without being supported by the council. “I think the council’s contribution to the heritage prescient is giving us heritage power lines,” says Neil. “This whole business of heritage protection, which the council wants to do more of, is a whole partnership between the owners of the heritage buildings and the council and we think we’ve done our bit and we’d like the council to come to the table.” Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio was unavailable for comment on Monday but earlier said he would look into the matter.

Efforts of Merchant Navy remembered at Anzac Park Andrew Board From seamen to sea scouts, they came to honour the fallen who served the Merchant Navy, the unofficial “fourth service” that kept trade routes open, most famously during World War 2. Merchant Navy Day is only in its third year but a strong crowd of around 100 people gathered at Anzac Park on Saturday to pay tribute to the efforts of the Merchant Navy. They heard the tale of thousands who were killed while trying to defend trade routes around England in World War 2 but also the story of four Nelson seamen who survived a German mine in the Hauraki Gulf, just off Auckland. The men were on the Nelson-owned cargo ship Puriri, which had by then been taken over by the New Zealand Navy to become a minesweeper called the HMS Puriri. Because the seamen knew how to operate the Puriri they were kept on by the Navy to help man the ship. But in May 1941, just eight miles off the Auckland coast, a German mine exploded and sank it, killing five men with a further 26 plucked out of the water, four of them Nelsonians, two crewmen and two engineers. The story was told by Ben Gibbs and highlighted the sacrifice of hundreds of New Zealand seamen who were a part of the Merchant Navy. The day was supported by

Two local Merchant Navy men, Dave Laws and Richard Tidmarsh, say they are thrilled that the service is now officially

recognised and were proud to march in honour of those who have served the Merchant Navy. “For a long time we weren’t recognised by the government. The other services were good but we weren’t officially recognised. It’s great that we are now, not

for us, this isn’t for us, it’s for those jokers that sacrificed themselves for the rest of us. It’s very important that they be recognised,” says Dave. The Nelson Merchant Navy association thanked the Nelson RSA for its support.

Roading boost for region Your Community Newspaper

Funding of the $6 million boulevard for Rocks Rd was one of the key highlights in a $175 million roading investment for the top of the south announced by the government last week. The package also includes significant investment to Waimea Rd, more cycling lanes and the strengthening of roads from Blenheim to Richmond for heavy freight, using the $21 million of unused “R funding” allocated to Nelson. NZ Transport Agency says its package of transport investment will boost economic growth, tourism and safety throughout the top of the South Island. NZTA regional director central Jenny Chetwynd says the package includes full allocation of regional funds for Nelson and Marlborough. “We’ve got a big package of work planned for Nelson using $21.7m of regional funds. These funds will be invested in a route connecting Richmond to Blenheim, improved safety and traffic flow along Waimea Rd, safety improvements to State Highway 6, a new stock effluent facility, better walking and cycling facilities, and a suite of safety improvements on SH6 and local roads.” The investment in Rocks Rd has caused the biggest excitement for Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. “This is fantastic news for Nelson, the Rocks Rd boulevard will be a great feature for the city, a massive,

massive asset.” Ms Chetwynd says the NZTA’s key focus in the fast-growing Tasman region is keeping communities connected and keeping roads secure and resilient for freight and tourism. “After the storms of last December, and the disruption experienced at Totaranui and Bird’s Hill, it’s crucial that we keep the local roading network open for business. Freight and tourism is the lifeblood of the region and we need to ensure that our roads are safe, resilient and built to spur along economic growth in these sectors.” She says the investment package would also improve facilities for walking and cycling in Nelson. “We recognise that people in Nelson really like to get out and about, and cycling is going from strength to strength. We want to improve safety and access for recreational and active travel. This will make it safer and easier to get to and from school, and help to encourage people to get out of their cars and onto the pedals, and also foster cycle tourism.” Safety is also a top priority, and that targeted investment would be focused on addressing high-risk sections of road to help bring down the region’s road toll, she says. The investment in the region is part of a $12.28 billion investment in New Zealand’s land transport system set out by the government last week.

Street party starts a new tradition When John Young was a kid he knew everyone on his block and reckoned it was a pretty good way to live. So when he saw an opportunity to get all his neighbours together for a big street party he jumped at it. “I’ve live here for five or six years and don’t really know my neighbours that well so I thought ‘bugger it’ let’s get everyone together,” he says. John entered a Facebook competition run by Domino’s Pizza, to win 30 pizzas as part of its Cheaper Tuesday Street Party promotion. He won and then sent out invitations to all of his neighbours at the end of Devon St in Stoke for the street party last Tuesday night. “We’ve got people of all ages here, senior citizens to young kids and we’ve never really mixed as a

community and it’s worked, everyone is here and having a good time together,” he says. Some neighbours brought along cookies and drinks, while others brought along chairs and rugs. John had the music going and the local Neighbourhood Support coordinator was out in force. John says he hopes it’s just the beginning. “I think it would be great to have a Christmas party here, under the old oak tree at the end of the road,” he suggested, which immediately had one of the neighbours asking what the likely date would be so they can make sure they save the date on their calendar. John wasn’t sure, but may have to get planning fairly soon after last week’s success.

School bUS SAfETY: Local police and councils are joining together in September to remind drivers about the legal speed limit past school buses (20kmph) – and the reasons for it. Every day, hundreds of students make the journey to and from school safely by school bus. It is one of the safest ways to travel but since 2001 there have been 10 fatalities, 16 serious injuries and 40 minor child injuries associated with this form of travel.

Tim’s image series documenting the Nelson floods – which followed two days of recordbreaking rain in December 2011 – earned him the finalist placing in the competition.

Phillip Rollo APPEAl WEEk for brAin injUrY: The Brain Injury Association of Nelson is gearing up for its annual street appeal next week. It is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a free support and liaison service in the Marlborough and Nelson regions. Services include support groups, advice, resources, social events and an advocacy service. Its goal is to ensure that every person living with a brain injury is able to access the best possible support and means of rehabilitation. The street appeal in Nelson is on September 8 and the Richmond Mall appeal is on September 11 and 13.

The new owners of a two-car electric train are planning on turning it into accommodation for visiting cyclists. Belgrove couple Hans and Anja Claus bought the train, formerly owned by Metlink, for $29,990 on TradeMe two months ago. The couple’s daughter Monique, who attends Waimea College, placed the winning bid just minutes before the bid closed. Hans says that he has always dreamt of turning a train into accommodation but it was only when the 38 tonne engine and its 24 tonne carriage appeared on TradeMe that he could finally turn that

dream into a reality. “It’s been a long process. At first we were just thinking about it but it was only since they became available that we were working hard at it. You can’t just go to the market and buy a train,” Hans explains as the second piece of the train was craned onto his property at midday on Friday. “It’s for the cycle trail that they’re building at the moment. It will come close to the State Highway.” The Great Taste Cycle Trail would enable cyclists to pedal from Nelson to all corners of the Tasman region. The accommodation will be similar to holiday homes on Waikuku Beach north of Christchurch that were originally purchased by the Tramway board. Around

ten years ago there was also a carriage restaurant on Main South Rd just before the Waitaki River. Hans says “it was a bit of a mission” picking up the train from the KiwiRail yard in Lower Hutt on Thursday night. It was brought over on the Interislander atop of a truck in the dark of night and then lifted onto his property the next day. “We only got to the ferry at 8:30 at night so by the time we came into Picton it was 1:30 in the morning.” The couple is yet to decide on how the set up of the accommodation would look but Hans believes the process of turning into it accommodation is likely to take at least two years.

Stoke schools respect new campaign Nayland College has launched a new campaign aimed at increasing respect for learning and the wider community. School wide positive behaviour for learning, abbreviated as SWPB4L, is a Ministry of Education initiative which is being trialled by the consortium of Nayland College, Broadgreen Intermediate School and Stoke School, amongst others nation-wide. Nayland College is in the second year of a three year contract with the MoE but it was the first time it had actively pushed the programme to this extent. It was announced to students at a school assembly last week by the college's youth worker Shannon Johnston. The entire teaching faculty wore t-shirts branded with the word “respect” while around 20 students performed a musical skit to align with the campaign. Nayland College deputy principal Trevor Olley was pleased with early feedback and says that staff would discuss how the word “respect” would be physically implemented throughout the school this week. It was likely to cover respecting learning, the environment and other people. "We consulted the students, the staff and the community about what the expectations of students at Nayland College should be in three to five words. The word that came up very clearly in all elements was respect," he says. "We need to discuss what that will look like in the classroom and then we will model it and teach to it as well." Trevor says there were "no issues" with the current learning culture but the school has seen the initiative as an opportunity to enhance it further. Each school is running a different campaign but once it has been established in the the culture of the schools it would be pushed out into the wider Stoke community.

what if they could not leave the building, what if someone got hurt from falling stock? Interesting conversations were also had around personal preparedness of the staff themselves, whether they would they know how to contact their families if there was no power, or telecommunications. The staff have all agreed to review their own preparedness and planning. One positive was the staff acknowledged they all had good footwear and could make it home walking if they needed to in the event of an emergency affecting roads and transport. First Chch, now Iran

Firooz Zadeh will be doing a speech on Iran, raising money for victims of a recent Iranian earthquake. Firooz did a similar tour to raise money for victims of the Christchurch earthquake last year. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Richmond man Firooz Zadeh jumped at the chance to raise some money for the people of Christchurch after last year’s earthquake. Now he’s hoping to do it all again, only this time for the thousands of people urgently needing medical supplies in his home country, Iran. Firooz has lived in Richmond for the past ten years and has written three books. He is contracted to speak on some of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships, often to crowds as big as 1000 people. He speaks about Iran, America and New Zealand and openly admits to trying to tempt some of the mostly American passengers to New Zealand. He says most people in the west don’t have a clue about Iran and sanctions placed on it by the United States only hurt the normal people going about their lives, not the government. Last year Firooz travelled the country, speaking about Iran and in the process raised $5000 for the Christchurch earthquake fund. This time he is hoping to do the same, raising money for medical supplies for those injured in the Iranian earthquake which killed 300 people and left 16,000 needing emergency shelter in mid-August. “Kiwis are always so generous and the first to give, I’m hoping they will help me in trying to help the people hurt in the recent earthquake,” says Firooz. His tour is starting in Richmond, at the library, this Saturday, September 8 from 2 to 4pm and will also include a silent auction of Iranian artwork, music, books, videos and other artefacts. Reservations are recommended by calling 544 3950 or emailing bzadeh@xtra.co.nz.

The science of human poo A visiting expert on human poo is giving a lecture in Nelson later this month, talking about the findings of research into the safe use of waste products for food production. Dr Deborah Pritchard is a senior lecturer at Curtin University, Western Australia, and is being hosted in Nelson by the Cawthron Institute Trust Board. She has extensive experience in teaching and research of relevance to both the environment and agricultural industries. Her focus on the safe use of waste products for their nutrient value in food production, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, has resulted in numerous field experiments throughout Australia and recently in Africa. The findings of these projects have improved the agricultural land application of various waste products, including biosolids, municipal waste and animal manure; specifically related to nutrient recycling, heavy metals and pathogens. The lecture will assess the scientific rationale behind the recycling of

nutrients in land applied biosolids (treated sewage sludge). The production of faeces by humans is an age old activity; the average lifetime production of faeces is about 4.0 tonnes. This ubiquitous production, combined with increasing population and increasing global food requirement has resulted in a drive to divert from landfill, prevent water and land pollution and better reuse the nutrient and beneficial properties of nutrients and organic matter for soil remediation and plant production. The lecture will highlight recent trends and developments relating to the land application of biosolids to ensure that the 4.0 tonnes of faeces that we each collectively produce is put to good use; focussing on key issues such as nutrients, loading rates, pathogens, ecological risks, metals, organic pollutants, nanoparticles, odour and community attitudes. The lecture with Dr Pritchard is at 7.30pm, Friday September 21 at the Nelson School of Music.

Local rock band takes on local bars

Heavy metal bands may be a dying breed but one Nelson act is striving to ensure the genre's survival. Repeat Offenders, a four piece covers band comprising of friends Sam Wilson (vocals), Aaron Russ (drums), Andy McCubbin (guitar) and Kingsley Burgess (bass guitar), has lined up numerous gigs around Nelson pubs, with its next four hour set to be held at The Star and Garter in Richmond on September 15. Aaron believes the band is the only of its kind remaining in Nelson. "No one else is doing it. There's a hole and we're filling that up," he says. "If you wanted to go out and listen to the type of songs we play, you just couldn't." Repeat Offenders only perform "dirty old rock" covers. Those include anything from well known hits by metal icons Metallica and Iron Maiden, to more stadium rock sounds of Muse. Andy highlights the band's age as an influencing factor in its song choices. "We all bring different things to the table and we're still merging and figuring things out. Initially it was 'is this really going to work?' but it's come off really well." Aaron, Kingsley and Sam have performed in the

same bands on and off for the past 15 years. "It was a long time ago. We were kids then," laughs Sam, who is the only member of the band that was not born in Nelson. All of the members had competed at local battle of the bands concerts, doing extremely well. "Hence the name Repeat Offenders. We've all done the band thing before around Nelson. That's us. I think a lot of rock on the radio has got a bit soft so we're trying to put a bit of rock back in the pub, nothing crazy." The band is known for its skilled musicianship and energetic stage presence. "We don't just stand around and play. The band was picked because we're all good at what we do. We get out their and nail the songs." The dream of conquering the world may be over, says Aaron but the band still has a duty to entertain local fans. The four hour Star and Garter gig will begin around 9:30pm and is likely to finish when the venue closes. If you can't make it to the next gig, the Repeat Offenders will also perform at the Shark Club on September 29.

ENGINEERING LIMITED at ET Engineering and they want to be sure that they are heard loud and clear. Eric describes the company by saying that just because they’ve been around for quite some time they are no where near ready to ‘roll over and play dead’. ET Engineering want to assure their loyal and future clients that they are up there in terms of the current market and trends and intend to stay there for many more years to come. One ET tradesman, Adam Jacques, describes the new makeover as a “breath of fresh life and morale” to the business, a little reminder to the community that they are not just going to sit there

and go stale but are going to get out there and show people what we can do. From garden forks and tow bars to machining, plant maintenance, trailers and structural building, no job is too small or too big for the team at ET Engineering. Eric’s belief is that it doesn’t matter what size of a job comes across the bridge, it has to be done to the highest of standards, and that is exactly what sets Eric and his team apart from the rest. “We don’t see people as money or profits, we see them as people who we are more than happy to help them with whatever their needs be. We are a business with the clients best interest at heart,

Owner of ET Engineering, Eric Eden and new client Fabian Prioux standing inside what will be Fabian’s French cuisine food cart. ET Engineering not only recently celebrated their 15th anniversary but have also undergone a makeover. After 15 years in the business, owners Eric and Cherryl Eden thought it was time for a change. As some of you may have already noticed ET Engineering’s logo and signage have been refreshed with a little bit of jazz and colour. “It was time to step up our game and show people that we have got confidence in what is going to start happening in the industry and to do that we’ve put ourselves out there,” said Vanessa, Office Manager of ET.

And putting themselves out there is what they have done. Whilst the new logo and signs, created to reflect ET’s enthusiasm and confidence, are bright and outgoing ET wants to assure their clients that they are still they same firm they’ve always been. “We’ve put ourselves out there to be seen and we’re letting people know that although everything is new and flashy we are still the same firm and business that we’ve always been with the same beliefs,” said Vanessa. The change has ushered in a new found attitude amongst the team

it’s not all about the money but doing something for other people and enjoying what we do, said Eric. As a part of ET’s new found image they have constructed a very special sculpture to symbolise the diversity of their skills and creativity. The sculpture stands roughly a metre and a half tall and wide and is on display out the front of their workshop on Beach Road. Vanessa and Alistair Barlow, an ET Engineer, worked together and fine tuned it until they were happy and it turns out the sculpture is already a big hit around town. One very impressed client who is a fan of the sculpture and makeover is Fabian Prioux. Fabian is working with ET to construct a food cart, not just your average food cart but one that the likes of Richmond have never seen before. Without giving away to much detail, the French cuisine cart will house a full commercial kitchen and Fabian believes that no one was better than Eric and his team at ET Engineering for the job. “I looked around quite a lot and when I saw the capacity of the work they were producing I was very impressed. "It's just an amazing day and we are so appreciative of all the volunteers for all the hours they put into making the day a success." Hundreds of volunteers manned collection stalls, helped bunch flowers and collect money. Among the highlights were a head shave in Richmond, which raised $5000,

a quiz night and the "wonderful girls" at Nelson Hospital who dressed up and even made their own cupcakes to sell. Linda says the community was hugely generous again and money was still being counted on Monday. On Friday alone though, $21,000 was banked for the Nelson Cancer Society. Photo: Sarah Board.

Rowing interest 'massive' An explosion of interest in our most successful Olympic sport in London has prompted the local rowing club to open its doors for those who want to give the sport a go. Nelson Rowing Club president Tim Babbage says he’s received dozens of phone calls and emails since the Olympics from people keen to give the sport a go, so the club has organised an open day this weekend. He says it will give people an insight into rowing and what the sport’s all about. “It’s just a good chance to get in a boat with a couple of club rowers and go out on the water for 30 minutes and see what it’s all about. If people want to take it further from there, then great,” says Tim. New Zealand won three gold and one bronze medal at the London Olympics, lifting the country’s top rowers to hero status. Tim says the news is all good for the sport and the Nelson club would like to see the number of its members grow. “We have a strong club with quite a few college teams but we’d like to grow and would like to see some new people come and get into the sport.” New rowers this weekend will need to be of college age or higher says Tim and will only need to bring along shorts, t-shirt and sunglasses, the rest will be provided. To have a go, just meet at the Nelson Rowing Club, just along from the red building of the Tasman Bay Cruising Club at the Nelson Marina between 9am and 12noon either Saturday or Sunday, September 8 or 9.

An environmentally responsible option to food waste disposal

The Evolution series The worlds most advanced waste disposers • Grind almost anything • Hear almost nothing A clean and convenient method of creating an odour free and hygienic kitchen by ridding it of food scraps

McGlashen Ave, Richmond

Ph 544 4006

Responsible architecture allows for the proper disposal of household waste. Local authorities support this stance, with many city councils actively pursuing smarter ways to dispose of rubbish, especially food scraps, which account for 20 percent of all household waste. Clayton Knowles of Edward Gibbons Ltd says waste disposers are one of the best environmental options for waste reduction. “Once the machine is paid for, disposal of food is free, it uses less water per day than a toilet does in one flush and its power usage is minimal.” He says home composting is also recognised as an ideal method, but many people do not have the time nor available land to manage a compost heap. Parex, the NZ distributors of InSinkErator, advocates a triple-bottom-line approach, taking into account environmental, economic and social reasons for responsible waste disposal. “Some councils have now adopted a zero-wasteto-landfill policy, and InSinkErator complies with that policy one hundred percent.” Clayton says that people often feel guilty about using waste disposers because “they think it can’t be that easy”. But it is. “Food waste is 70 percent moisture, and fibrous pulp naturally releases methane. This gas is captured by anaerobic digesters in modern treatment plants and used to generate power.” Biosolids can also be collected and used for land reclamation. One such project saw the quarry

area of Puketutu Island rehabilitated with treated biosolids from the adjacent Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant to create a new regional park. The true cost of growing landfills is becoming more and more evident, with mounting costs being offloaded to ratepayers and the escalating public health risks of enormous rubbish piles. “Yet waste disposers have no cost to the ratepayer, enable separation of food waste at the source and do not accumulate in the sewers. They don’t require fuel-burning vehicles to take to the road, there is no bin, no smell and they are very convenient,” Higgs says. Authorities around the world are beginning to recognise the important role waste disposers play environmentally, with many specifying their installation in new homes or providing subsidies for their purchase. “This is especially the case in apartment blocks, rest homes, and other multi-use properties where alternative waste disposal systems are not an option,” he says. The latest models from InSinkErator are so advanced they emit very little sound, despite their powerful induction motors. They can be installed into new and existing kitchens, taking up very little space. InSinkErators are available at Edward Gibbons Ltd in McGlashen Ave, Richmond. Jacks OPD celebrate winning the Nelson netball premier grade in 2012. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Jacks crowned champs Jacks Office Products Depot Richmond was without a doubt, the in form team in the premier competition. They went through the regular season unbeaten with 14 wins and one draw and can now call themselves champions of Nelson netball. Jacks took the final of the Tasman Trophy (between the top three teams from both Nelson and Marlborough) with a clinical performance against Marlborough’s SMOG Stainless Steel. Jacks won the direct route to the Thursday’s final with an overwhelming win over Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro. Waimea College got the second final berth having defeated Richmond in the minor semi final. While Jacks have played some impressive netball throughout the season, Thursday’s final could be considered lacklustre. All the pressure was on Jacks while Waimea College had nothing to lose and therefore looked more relaxed. Jacks were hesitant and lacked flow through court, partly due to the defence of Waimea’s Ashley Laing, Kaitlyn Stringer and Ella Marwick. However, once the ball reached the shooters’ hands it was practically a foregone conclusion it would be converted. Goal shoot, Ani Waitai shot 91 per cent, while goal attacks Leanne Cook and

Chelsea Brooks played a more supportive role for a team average of 89 per cent. Jacks second quarter was almost their undoing as Waimea outscored them 15-10. Coach, Robyn Leonard made five changes at the major break which included the introduction of Chelsea at goal attack and “call-on” wing attack Kirsten Powick. The changes played dividends along with the reshuffled defensive end. Jacks won the third quarter 12-10 but was still one in arrears with fifteen minutes to play. A run of nine goals to one at the beginning of the final quarter Jacks looked to have the game however Waimea finished strongly to net the final four goals only to come up short 47-49. Robyn said her team went into the game with high expectations but was far from complacent. However they were guilty of making uncharacteristic mistakes. There was some “dopey play” but there was some good play as well. Her players played as a unit and did not panic. Robyn was hesitant to name a standout player as each and every one contributed at some stage, and she did have faith in her bench. She believes her team peaked at the end of the second round and although it was not a “pretty win” it was a win and she was pretty stoked with her girls.

Entries open for classic endurance motorbike race Sarah Dunlop Nelson Motorcycle Club is once again hosting the Morley Honda 6 Hour Ironman and Pony Express, which is one of the stand-out events on the motorcycling calendar. The event is in its 17th consecutive year and has repeatedly attracted riders from around the country to the Nelson area with its promise of great riding and competition. Over the years the Morley Honda 6 hour has evolved into a major event on the racing calendar, with riders returning every year to improve their placing, and defend titles. The work the Morley Honda team puts into preparing and running this event in the weeks and months leading up to it, in conjunction with the Nelson Motorcycle Club, ensures that the 6 Hour Ironman and Pony Express is always an enjoyable, well-run event, which is evident in the turnout of riders on the day. Initially designed as a quad only event, twowheeled motorbikes soon became the more popular choice, now making up well over half the field. The format is simple – riders have 6 hours to complete as many laps as they can, and can head out on their final lap at any stage before the 6 hour time limit elapses. The Ironman competitors compete as individuals, while in the Pony Express class riders work in teams of two, taking turns to complete laps. Christchurch KTM rider Glen Manning will be back to defend his Motorcycle Ironman ti-

tle this year, after winning the 2011 Ironman in a close finish, following a six hour battle with runner up Simon Routledge. In the quad Ironman class last year, Jason Ahnfeldt dominated the field, and there will be some stiff competition in 2012. Last year Chris Power from Power Racing made a change from previous years where he has taken out the Ironman trophy. In 2011 he entered in the Pony Express class with cousin Karl Power. They took out their Pony Express class over second place getters Matt and Michael Vining, and also picked up the overall Champions trophy, having the fastest lap times over the entire field on the day. Chris will be back this year, riding a CRF450R supplied by Morley Honda, competing in the Ironman class once again. This year the Morley Honda 6 Hour is being run on September 16 in the Hira Forest, accessed from the Maitai Valley near Nelson. This all weather, all abilities track is suitable for both quad bikes and dirtbikes. With lap times of 40 minutes expected from the top riders over the 35km track it is sure to be a fast and furious competition. Although the more serious contenders will be battling it out at the front of the pack, the Morley Honda 6 Hour is for riders of all abilities. The track is made up largely of forestry roads and tracks, in what is sure to be a fast, exciting ride. For further information and entry forms contact the team at Morley Honda on 544 8703, or check out the website www.morleymotorcycles.co.nz.

Marlborough cyclist Callum Saunders leads Tasman Wheelers Richie Howes, William Smith, Garry Overend, Eileen Searle and Roger Matheson through the start of the Nelson 80 on Saturday. In what should have been a race for climbers and endurance riders, it was the sprinters that dominated Saturday’s historic event with Daniel Ellison winning both the Olympic Cup for the first

rider across the finish line and the Johnston Cup for the fastest time. Daniel previously won both honours in 2010. The event uses a traditional handicapped format with 71 starters spread out over 31 minutes, before racing over the Waiwhero Hills to Ngatimoti and back over the Neudorf Saddle to Redwood Valley. The region’s top young rugby girls are heading to Christchurch this week where they are hoping to go two better than their inaugural effort last year and win the Christchurch Secondary School 10s competition. The Whakatu 10s rugby team is a composite of players from Motueka High School, Nayland College, Nelson College for Girls and Marlborough Girls College and features a strong contingent of international players. Player/ coach Tash Kara says the squad has the potential to win the competition. “I think we’re capable of winning it this year, the amount of training we’ve been doing is really positive. Fitness is definitely one of our strengths.” Last year the team, playing in the tournament for the first time, finished third out of 14 teams. The result took even

the players by surprise, who didn’t expect to do as well as they did. This year the team has a mix of senior club rugby players and those who have never played until this year. Tash says the international players, on a student exchange, have really developed since playing 7s over recent weeks. “It’s a really new thing for our international students, but we’ve played five games within school rugby and they’ve learnt a lot about the game. We’ve had a lot of positive feedback around 7s, a lot say they are keen to get into it back in their home country.” The team travels to Christchurch on Wednesday, playing up to seven games on Thursday before returning to Nelson on Friday. More than 20 teams have registered for this year’s tournament says Tash.
