Race to lead the city, into final days Andrew Board The race to become Nelson’s mayor is now in the final stretch with an announcement on who will lead the city for the next three years, due on Saturday. Aldo Miccio, Rachel Reese, Kerry Marshall, Mike Ward and Gary Watson have been campaigning hard for the job over the past month, attending community forums, pressing the flesh and spending money on advertising. And with a close finish predicted, Electionz’s Warwick Lampp, the electoral officer for Nelson City, says there is still plenty of room for late votes to come in. “We’ve seen a steady increase of incoming votes over the past week and we are about ten percent ahead of 2007 nationwide. I’m expecting a very busy week though, for Nelson and some other tight races.” As of Friday, 8257 votes had been received for the
Nelson City Council election. In 2007, 10,864 votes were received in total. The last of the candidate forums was hosted by the Nelson Residents Association at the Trafalgar Centre last week but the campaigning didn’t stop there. Aldo Miccio appeared in a national magazine displaying his home and family, council candidate Phillip Thompson organised a spot of street football at Square 1903 on Saturday and Rachel Reese’s bright yellow sign-written car had a great view of the beach from Rocks Rd over the weekend. The serious business begins this Saturday though for the person elected mayor, and the 12 successful council candidates. Initial announcements are due to be made by mid-afternoon and will be available on the council website. The polls close at noon this Saturday, October 9.

Sun-starved Nelsonians flock to beach After a wet September, Nelsonians lapped up the warm sun over the weekend with some even braving the chilly ocean for a swim. The temperature on Sunday soared to 17 degrees Celsius, according to the MetService, and it did not take long for Tahunanui Beach to attract winter-weary folk. September was an “unusual” month weather-wise according to
NIWA. Rainfall recorded at Nelson airport was one and a half times the normal rate for September with 117mm recorded, says climate scientist Georgina Griffiths. “It was certainly a volatile month, very windy and very wet.” Nelson can look forward to a better start to October though, with fine weather predicted for the rest of the week.
