Race to lead the city, into final days Andrew Board The race to become Nelson’s mayor is now in the final stretch with an announcement on who will lead the city for the next three years, due on Saturday. Aldo Miccio, Rachel Reese, Kerry Marshall, Mike Ward and Gary Watson have been campaigning hard for the job over the past month, attending community forums, pressing the flesh and spending money on advertising. And with a close finish predicted, Electionz’s Warwick Lampp, the electoral officer for Nelson City, says there is still plenty of room for late votes to come in. “We’ve seen a steady increase of incoming votes over the past week and we are about ten percent ahead of 2007 nationwide. I’m expecting a very busy week though, for Nelson and some other tight races.” As of Friday, 8257 votes had been received for the

Nelson City Council election. In 2007, 10,864 votes were received in total. The last of the candidate forums was hosted by the Nelson Residents Association at the Trafalgar Centre last week but the campaigning didn’t stop there. Aldo Miccio appeared in a national magazine displaying his home and family, council candidate Phillip Thompson organised a spot of street football at Square 1903 on Saturday and Rachel Reese’s bright yellow sign-written car had a great view of the beach from Rocks Rd over the weekend. The serious business begins this Saturday though for the person elected mayor, and the 12 successful council candidates. Initial announcements are due to be made by mid-afternoon and will be available on the council website. The polls close at noon this Saturday, October 9.

Sun-starved Nelsonians flock to beach After a wet September, Nelsonians lapped up the warm sun over the weekend with some even braving the chilly ocean for a swim. The temperature on Sunday soared to 17 degrees Celsius, according to the MetService, and it did not take long for Tahunanui Beach to attract winter-weary folk. September was an “unusual” month weather-wise according to

NIWA. Rainfall recorded at Nelson airport was one and a half times the normal rate for September with 117mm recorded, says climate scientist Georgina Griffiths. “It was certainly a volatile month, very windy and very wet.” Nelson can look forward to a better start to October though, with fine weather predicted for the rest of the week.

It’s sneaky, it’s wild and it wants you to be a part of it. The first ever WASA, Wild and Sneaky Art Festival, was officially launched last Saturday night. The festival will have eight days of fun and surprising ways that celebrate creativity in everyday life. WASA is a festival where you become the artist says director Nickola Blunt. “It’s about giving yourself permission to try those new creative experiences you always wanted to try, with wild, surprising and often transformational results.” For event information check out the website at www.wasa.co.nz.

• Nelson police are asking for public help after a vicious attack in the city early on Saturday morning, which has left a man in a coma with serious injuries. The victim, Nelson hairdresser Brent William Powell, 40, had been at a private gathering of jazz enthusiasts at a Tasman St house on Friday evening. He left just after midnight and started walking home along Hardy St. He was about 30 metres from the intersection with Domett St when he was assaulted. Police are seeking help from the public to identify his assailant and any information can be passed on to Detective Pat Nally on 545 9809.

Fiona Bonnett and Quilah Bruce try out the bunk beds, replicated from the early ships to Nelson, at the Nelson Provinical Museum exhibition, Port Nelson Haven Ahoy! yesterday.

Haven Ahoy, new exhibition opens It took about four months for Nelson’s early settlers to sail here from England, and the team at Nelson Provincial Museum about as long to recreate it. But this week the incredible Port Nelson Haven Ahoy exhibition has opened to the public. The exhibition recreates the journey from England to Nelson by boat, researching it from the diaries of four people onboard the early ships. It’s a master-piece that museum chief executive Peter Millward is delighted to have on show. “It’s incredible, the creativity of my team never ceases to astonish me.” More than 200 collection objects are on display at the exhibition which mixes interactive com-

ponents and various sound elements with the extremely valuable collection pieces. Over the coming weeks 1400 school children are already booked to tour the exhibition. A team of contractors, museum staff and volunteers worked on the exhibition, put together by Sally Papps and Paula Haines-Bellamy. The exhibition was officially opened on Sunday afternoon with 170 people taking the opportunity to check it out that day. Monday was even busier with hundreds streaming through the museum. Peter says he is thrilled with the response. “People are getting very excited about this, and so they should in my opinion, it will be a very popular display.”

Nelson businesses win big at national hospo awards Nelson’s Grand Mercure Monaco Resort was last week named New Zealand’s Best Accommodation Hotel at the Hospitality Association of New Zealand (HANZ) Gala Awards in Auckland. But the fun did not end there for Nelson businesses with restaurant, Mint Dining Room, also winning an award, for Best Lamb Dish. The HANZ Awards for Excellence are judged on a range of businessfocussed criteria – such as marketing strategies, human resourcing practices, profitability, operational policies, and customer service. Monaco managing director, Clare Davies says she was thrilled with the win, the resorts second in three years. Katie-Jane Pinker, co-owner of Mint

along with husband Grant, says she was happy to win the award. “We have been open less than a year so are thrilled to win a national award in our first year of business.” Hospitality Association of New Zealand chief executive Bruce Robertson, says the business nature of these awards set them apart from other more consumer-driven awards. In many categories, entrants must submit business plans and financial analysis of their operations, each of which is independently verified. “Despite operating in economically challenging times, all these award winners have shown an unrivalled passion and commitment for pursuing excellence in their respective sectors.”

It’s a cell phone message that is already helping to save lives and Nelson’s use of it is a first for New Zealand. The innovative joint project between St John and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board will dramatically improve results and outcomes for cardiac patients they say. St John Ambulance Paramedics can now transmit a 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG) reading of a patient’s heart rhythm via a Telecom cellphone to Nelson Hospital, where it can be reviewed by cardiologists before the patient has even arrived at hospital. This allows much faster treatment of the patient by hospital Cardiology and catheter laboratory staff once the patient arrives at the Emergency Department. The procedure is then performed to insert a stent in to the blocked coronary artery as quickly as possible to allow blood flow to return to affected heart muscle. The project has already been successful, when a 58 year-old Nelson man experienced a cardiac event two weeks ago and was saved through quick intervention. Nelson Marlborough district operations manager Barry Howell says with the ambulance service introducing new Phillips MRX cardiac defibrillator monitors, that have the

ability to transmit a detailed ECG, the decision to progress to the next stage of the program was an obvious step. “The initiative has been driven largely from the bottom up by paramedics and hospital medical staff with some funding support from the DHB for the project. It was able to be used when St John installed a receiving station at its Northern Region HQ in Auckland so eventually transmitting ECG’s can occur from any part of the country to any hospital emergency department.” Dr James Moore, who works at Nelson Hospital but is also an ambulance doctor with St John explains that, in a heart attack, the blood supply to the heart is blocked and with each passing minute more of the heart’s muscle dies. “The ECG reading comes out as both a fax and an email at Nelson hospital, which hospital cardiologists can review immediately. This allows for emergency activation of the hospital’s cardiac catheter lab team who can perform an angioplasty operation to unblock the artery.” Barry says that while the ambulances at Nelson and Richmond have these facilities at the moment, the plan will be rolled out to include Marlborough Motueka, Kaikoura Murchison and Takaka vehicles.

Nelson music video star on the move Yes, our photos are for sale Shushila Takao’s knew she wanted to travel the world, but it has been her star quality doing that recently after a starring role in a music video. Shushila’s appearance in a music video “Alone No More” for New Zealand artist Vince Harder has caught the attention of directors and photographers in New Zealand, Australia and the United States. But it came about after she travelled to Auckland for a job interview with Air New Zealand. “I wanted to be an air concierge and had my flights booked to Auckland for the interview and the night before they called up about the video so I did it the day after my interview with Air New Zealand.” Since then her ambitions have changed somewhat after a flood of positive feedback from her role. “Since that I’ve been in another music video on the Gold Coast and I’ve had heaps of interest from other directors.” She even had one director, so impressed with her performance, post on his facebook page for other directors to snap her up. “That just came from out of the blue and was so nice. I’ve had a lot of people get in touch with me since then.” So to take advantage of all the attention the Nelson model and beautician is moving to Auckland, where the work is. “Nelson will always be my home and I want to come back here long term but Shushila Takao is making the most of her star quality afI thought while I’m young I may as well ter appearing in music video “Alone No More” by singer see how far I can go with acting and Vince Harder. Last chance for enviro awards Nominations close this Friday, 8 October, for the Tasman Nelson Environment Awards 2010. Co-organisers Rob Francis from Tasman District Council and Karen Lee from Nelson City Council say entries are coming in slowly but many more are expected in the final week. However Rob warns against leaving it until the last minute. “While the entry process is easy, we advise people if they want to enter the sooner they contact us, the better. The Environment Awards are a great chance for schools, businesses, organisations and individuals to tell their story and win great prizes. It is free to enter and you can nominate yourself or someone else,” says Rob. Entry forms are available at all council offices and libraries, and on the websites www.tasman.govt.nz or www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz. For more information contact Rob Francis at TDC on 543-8484.

Students set for nine day coast to coast trek Phillip Rollo

They’ve been learning the skills for the past two years, and now it’s time for the Adventure Tourism class at NMIT to put it in to practice. The 14-strong class will embark on a nine day adventure guiding expedition, starting in Nelson and finishing in Kaikoura, going from one coast to another. “It’s kind of like a celebration for the end of the two year course,” says student Jodie Heywood. The expedition starts with a bike ride from NMIT, going past Tahunanui Beach, to Ben Nevis, hiking to Rainbow Road, and rafting from the Akron Bridge to Kaikoura. The only interaction the class will have with the outside world will be the transfers between legs where they will meet the bus driver when they drop off bikes and pick up the raft. “We’re gonna hate each other at the end,” says Sanne Tottras. Food and transport is the only cost for the students whose trips are covered in the $5000 course fee. But they are hoping to receive donations in the form of food, from some outdoor stores in the region, and will also be roaming the streets and the polytech with a raffle in the coming weeks to help fund the trip. The trip will go ahead even if it’s wet, and Jodie says they’ll just have “to toughen up” if it does rain. “We’ve learned how to cope with those things.” Sanne says the majority of the class is looking forward to the rafting, but not so much the nine and ten hour hikes. “Rafting, definitely. I like rafting, I hate hiking, but it’s gonna be awesome.”

Binding together: rural wear and tear entry ‘a team effort’ It’s involved materials from farms all over the region and residents of the hospital wing at Ernest Rutherford are pretty confident their entry will make a splash at the Rural Wear and Tear competition at the A&P Show next month. The Competition is for a wearable ‘work of art’ including accessories created from materials and items of an agricultural nature found on a farm such as frost cloth, copper, grain, electric fence tape, beer

bottle tops etc. Activities coordinator of the hospital wing at Ernest Rutherford says it was a team effort to get their garmet made. “We had materials coming in from relatives of all the residents and from my husband as well. We used onion bags, tits from a lambs bottle, sacks, rope and even gumboots.” The competition is sponsored by Richmond Mall and for more information on how to enter, visit www.thenelsonshow.org.nz.

Fashion Island runway set for plenty of fun Fashion Funway is getting set for the runway this weekend as Fashion Island hosts the finals of the funky fashion event. The competition challenged people to create a garment out of a plain white sheet and 82 people accepted the challenge, stunning Fashion Island retail manager Nicola Dolan. “I was beyond thrilled, I’ve been driving all over the district to buy enough white sheets for it,” she joked. Cutting, colouring and texturing was allowed but major additions were not says Nicola. “People can sew it, dye it, can use thread, buttons and zips but that’s about it, the rest is down to their creativity.” Four judges will assess the designs on a catwalk at FashFashion Island retail manager Nicola Dolan getting busy on a ion Island this Saturday from 11am and although Nicola plain white sheet, the same as the contestants of the Fashion Is- says she would short and sharp, the amount of entries may land Funway competition had to work with. MyPages launch directory It’s been a year in the making but this week businesses and households around the top-of-the-south will start to get their MyPages directory delivered. The locally-owned business directory, which covers the West Coast, Golden Bay, Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough and Kaikoura, arrived from the printers last week and the company’s four major shareholders say they are delighted with the finished

product. “We think it looks great and are just really happy to have it out now. Now people can see it and touch it, it will grow even further I think,” says managing director James Gordon. Every home and business in each region it covers will have a free directory delivered, about 100,000 copies says James. “If we need more we can print more but I think 100,000 will be a good start.”

The Harbour Master’s

diary

• A reasonably busy week at the Port for shipping with Monte Stello doing her usual Saturday run. Five container ships for the importers and exporters, a car carrier, two log ships, and several fishing vessels all visited the Port over the past week. • Another rescue run took place wherein a vessel broken down at anchor was in danger of flooding and sinking as the weather worsened. Five people on board a run-about enjoying a period of fishing found their motor wouldn’t start as they decided to head for home. They made a prudent call to the police and rescue was provided by the harbour master staff on the Port pilot boat. A good call before life was seriously threatened and a boat lost, however it is a timely reminder for us all to get our vessel engines serviced and tuned before the summer fun. Learn the rules of being a Safe Skipper. • Did you know that the Skipper can be, and probably will be held accountable for serious mishap on his vessel. Enjoy your safe boating this week,

A month has passed since Trafalgar Park was officially re-opened by Nelson City Council, following a $5.9 million upgrade, and its splendour is still shining brightly. A year out from the Rugby World Cup, Nelson has a sporting venue to rival any in regional New Zealand and its legacy will continue for generations of Nelsonians. Trafalgar Park has been the premier sporting venue in Nelson since the 1880’s when it was built on reclaimed land as a cricket oval. In the 130 years since it has been home to dozens of sports and recreation activities and even hosted concerts. Its location makes Trafalgar Park one of the most fan-friendly stadiums in the country with it just a five minute walk from the centre city. Local engineering consultant Opus Nelson says it is proud to have been involved in the redevelopment as the Project Manager, delivering the Trafalgar Park upgrade project to the community of Nelson and Tasman.

The upgrade included new toilet stalls, reconfigured entrance gates, landscaping, sports turf, site services and improved ticketing facilities. To ensure its position as a multievent venue, the Southern stand has been resurfaced to support a stage which will be used for concert events like Opera in the Park. The new stadium lighting (delivered by Engineering consultant Aurecon) involved eight new towers, erected to house 192 floodlights that make the park about three times brighter during night games than the old lights. Aurecon also delivered the new media suite above the pavilion. But one of the biggest talking points in the upgrade was the world-first recycled glass sand base, as opposed to the traditional quarried sand. The sand carpet is laid as the base level before the grass seed is sown and doing it with recycled glass is environmentally sustainable and extremely innovative. “The project team really got in-

It is a credit to the Park Upgrade Contractors, NCC auditors and the Health and Safety systems Opus developed throughout the project, that no lost time injuries occurred on site. Opus acknowledge the effort of Nelson City Council for committing to this project and securing the necessary central government funding to see the Upgrade progress from concept to reality. Local coffee roaster wins national medals Nelson coffee roaster, Pomeroy’s, has won two medals at the national coffee awards. The coffee-makers entered three different coffees in the awards and won two silver medals and a bronze. General manager Hayden Thompson says he was stoked to come away with the three awards. “We put in our Guatemalan and our espresso formula two, both have been repackaged for the grocery market and we pulled a silver for both of them, which was great. Then we put our Toxic brand in the organic section and won a bronze for that.” Hayden says Pomeroy’s have entered the awards in the past and have always done pretty well. “We’ve always got something out of it, which is great because we really try to keep that consist-

ency going from year to year.” The awards are getting more and more prestigious as more coffee roasters enter. This year 66 coffee roasters entered with just under 300 coffees over the various categories. As a winner Pomeroy’s get to put the silver sticker on its winners for a year says Hayden. “To be able to have our new brand coffee going into supermarkets with a silver medal is a great kick-start for us.” Hayden estimates it supplies 60 to 70 percent of the cafe and restaurant market in Nelson. “There are more coffee roasters than ever so you have to be on the top of your game and continue to put out a great product or you won’t be doing it for long.”

Pomeroy’s general manager Hayden Thompson tastes some of his medalwinning coffees.

The way we were A focus on our area and its history

“Some of the streets did not appear to like their names. The best example of this was Milton Grave which was changed to Ayax Avenue and then finally to Riversider.”

Nelson street names honour our forebears Contributed by Alan Turley.

Prominent Nelson street names were named after people, places and events associated with Lord Nelson.

When the first settlers arrived in Nelson in 1841 under the Wakefield Company settlement plan, the first committee they set up was the street naming committee. Unfortunately it proved a contentious issue and after much bickering the committee broke up. Later there were other complications when survey plans drawn up in England showed streets like Parere St and Northest St, Van demon climbing straight up the side of steep hills. Apparently they didn’t relise we had hills in Nelson. Initially, the streets of Nelson were named after people, places and events associated with Lord Nelson. Hence names like; Collingwood, Hardy, Trafalgar, Bronte, Brougham,

Victory, Vanguard, St Vincent, Nile, Northesk, were chosen for the original settlement. However, these soon ran out and over the years the practice changed to recognising prominent people who had made contributions to the city. Names like Wakefield, Domett, Marsden, Luckett, Elliott, Tyre, Cawthron, Akersten, Saxton, Kingsford, Harley, Poynter, Ann Bird, Kate Edger, Chamberlain were all perpetuated. For some reason most of the mayors of Nelson missed out although all of the early bishops of Nelson were recognised. A bank of names, many of them suggested by the public, was kept by the council from which sections for street names could be made when needed. It was standard practice not to name streets after any living persons.

Other trends also emerged as Maori names were introduced. Geographic features such as Mount, Brook, Rocks, Ridgeway, Bridge, Haven, Grove, Mount Pleasant were also adopted. Later, Governor Generals were recognised, as were English counties and we even have a poets corner. The name of a few early property owners began to creep in. Some of the streets did not appear to like their names. The best example of this was Milton Grave which was changed to Ayax Avenue and then finally to Riversider. There are other examples of where street names were changed such as Waimea St to Rutherford St, Beachwille Cres to Fountain Pl. The naming of streets was the prerogative of the council. However over recent years,

council has allowed commercial sub-dividers to name their streets in their subdivisions. This has led to a commercialisation of street naming. The term street seems to be no longer used. Designations such as avenue, way, drive, heights, crescent, chase are now the vogue. The New Zealand Geographic Board defines the correct use of each of these designations, but no one takes any notice of these in their effort to achieve commercial benefit. Names like Highview, Freeman Heights, Panorama Drive look set look set to be the pattern. The city council keeps a record of how and when each street is named. The streets of Nelson generally reflect the character of Nelson and many of the reflect the historical associations of the city.

Moore wins at Oceania Games New church moves to bigger home Nelson jumper Andrew Moore won a silver medal in his first international meet at the Oceania Track and Field Championship in Cairns last week. As reported two weeks ago by Nelson Weekly, Andrew was off to Cairns for his first major international event. After finishing fourth in the senior mens long jump with a wind assisted 6.91m, he went on to jump just shy of that distance with 6.83 to claim silver in the under 20 boys long jump. Andrew also finished fourth place in the senior mens high jump after he jumped 1.80m.

One of Nelson’s newest churches has expanded, moving into the building next to Nick Smith’s headquarters. The 50 memberstrong congration has been worshipping out of the Enner Glynn community hall until last week. The previous renters, Freedom Church, moved to the New Hub allowing Nelson Bays Church to move into its new home. To celebrate the move the church is hosting a special service this Sunday, 10/10/10 at Mike and Bev Luke, of Nelson Bays Church, outside their new base on the corner of Waimea and Quarantine Rd’s. 10am. Paul Marshall, Ngawhatu Bowling Club club captain and president of Bowls Nelson, left, with Ngawhatu vice-president Maurice Cattermole.

Idyllic club to host open day The Ngawhatu Bowling Club is getting on board with the Have a Go Day, promoted by Bowls NZ, by opening its greens to the public this Sunday. The Have a Go Day is being held at the club in the Ngawhatu Valley this Sunday Oct 10, from 11- 2pm. The club will provide bowls and a free sauagse sizzle says club captain Paul Marshall. “All you have to bring is a pair of flat soled shoes and a smile, both a compolsary,” he jokes. To find the club drive to the end of Ngawhatu Rd or for more information call Mary Orbell on 547-4340.

Nayland College sport has gone to a new high this year with an incredible performance from the Senior A Basketball team at the Secondary School National Basketball Championship in Palmerston North. “For boys at Nayland College it’s the first time we had ever hit the semi finals. So that was pretty exciting,” says assistant coach Julie Dempster. Nayland were the only team from Nelson to even qualify for the tournament, and they represented the region in style, finishing in the top four. “One lady on the score bench came to us and asked ‘how many Nelson boys have ya done?’ But we said none. We’ve got all Stoke kids, and we haven’t got any imports. It’s done all through our region. They’ve all come through our school, and that’s what’s really cool.” Going through to the semi finals undefeated, it took a powerful Fraser Boys High School outfit, coached by former Waikato Pistons head coach Jeff Green, to derail the Nayland side. “We pretty much got smashed. They have a team full of 19 year-olds. They were just too big for us. They’re a very good team.”

The full time score was 73-48. Zeb Lovell top scored for Nayland all throughout the Pool C clashes, with Scott Cameron firing in the playoffs, and even though captain Aaron Dempster made the tournament team, Julie credits the result as a big team effort. “We have six or seven players that just really work well together, and every game you come off

the court and at least four of those guys have hit double figures. Aaron is the captain, and he’s the leader and he controls the game really well.” As Aaron is the only year 13 in the squad, Nayland will be hoping they can build for next year and go one better and make the final. “Even three better. I know the boys have come away thinking they’d love to.”

Hira student wins tennis prize

When Dhillon Rhone, 8, went along to an open day at Wakapuaka Tennis Club last month he thought his new sport was “pretty cool”. But thanks to him registering that day Dhillon’s experience with tennis was about to get even better as he won the $650 tennis in schools prize pack thanks to Nelson Bays Tennis. The Tennis

in Schools programme was incredibly successful again this year taking tennis in the schools to 3000 children, 500 of which attended a club open day says Tennis Development Officer Lynnie Nevin. Dhillon says he was over-the-moon to win. “I burst into happiness, I was really excited.”

Nelson football stars in mix for Canterbury Utd Phillip Rollo

Football fever is spreading fast in New Zealand, and now it’s coming to Nelson, with the city set to host a national league game this summer. On January 16th, Canterbury United will host Team Wellington in the newly named ASB Premiership at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park. “It’s a good time of year to have it in Nelson. It’s going to be very crowded in terms of people at the holiday camps,” says Nelson Bays Football general manager Clive Beaumont. “We’re hoping that a good percentage of Cantabrians end up here for the holidays. It seems ideal to get a good crowd.” After re-signing with Canterbury last week, current New Zealand All White Aaron Clapham headlines a talented squad. Due to the earthquake, the final selection process has been delayed, but there could be some familiar faces in there as well. “Kids in Nelson would know of Aaron Clapham now, they’ll also know of the Nelson players who will hopefully make that squad.” The local players in contention are Nelson Suburbs Adam Smith, Coey Turipa and Gagame Feni, as well as Richmond Athletic star import Jordan Yong, while former Suburbs defender Dan Terris is a regular in the back four. Paul Dirou and Tom

Lancaster both departed at the end of last season with army duties and overseas travel. “Adam, Gagame, Coey and Jordan have all been invited down to train with the senior squad with a view to making final selections,” says director of Mainland Football Alan Walker. “Adam and Coey will be certainties for the National Men’s Youth team I coach, and are definitely on the radar for Keith [Braithwaite] and the senior team.” All four will be down in Christchurch for the holidays to have extended opportunities to make the senior squad. “It’s great that we are now engaging a wider group of players from Nelson, and Adam was certainly a catalyst for this last year with some exceptional displays for the youth team.” New Zealand U-20 goalkeeper Coey says he’d jump at the chance to play at a higher level especially in front of his home crowd. “It’d be an honour. It’s a good opportunity and good to play in front of your family. You don’t get these sort of big games in Nelson these days, we’ll try make the most of it.” Although Trafalgar Park is rarely used as a football pitch, the magnitude of the fixture made it an obvious choice. “Saxton Field is traditionally home to a club

Gagame Feni, Adam Smith and Coey Turipa are in contention for the Canterbury United squad. here, and the main pitch we have in Nelson [at Trafalgar Park] is supposed to be set up for multipurpose sports use in terms of that field, not just for rugby. Obviously it’s an ideal opportunity, and we’re looking at getting a crowd between 1000 and 1500 people, that’s what we want to attract. The bottom line is you can’t fit 1000 people around Saxton Field,” says Clive. While the region is developing players, Clive says the financial means of running an ASB Pre-

miership team make it unlikely for a Nelson team to return in the near future, and instead favours a strong relationship with Canterbury. “From my point of view it would be very difficult now for a Nelson club to come off the starting blocks efficiently enough to survive in the national league. It costs a lot of money to put a team through the national league, and it will be very difficult for a Nelson club to generate that kind of money. One would say on ability

wise we’d probably have the talent, but do we have the resources? We’re obviously a nursery district.” Admission fee hasn’t been confirmed, but Clive says children will get in free, and if the game is popular, he’s confident it will happen annually. “Having that as an event in Nelson would be a great springboard for the season. I think if the Nelson people come out and support it, then it will be a regular occurrence.”

Skaters on show at regional champs Phillip Rollo Local skateboarding dominance is on the line this Saturday at Neale Park in the 2010 Cheapskates Regional Skateboard Championship. The competition commences at noon, and will be split in to four divisions, Open Men, Under 16 Boys, Under 13 Boys and Open Women, with the winner from each category earning automatic qualification to the Cheapskates National Skateboard Championship in Auckland over Labour weekend. There will also be prizes for best trick. There’s a few things the judges will be looking for. “Consistency is the main one, as well as attempting pretty big tricks and landing them,” says Cheapskates Nelson owner Chris Kirby. “They’ve got a couple of runs, so sometimes they don’t perfect it the first time, and some of them don’t skate well under pressure.” One of the skaters looking for national qualification is Liam McAlister. Entered in the Under 16 Boys division, Liam is rated as one of the top skaters in Nelson, and he says he’s looking forward to the competition. “It’s good to get everyone together for a skate.
