Women’s Lifestyle Expo catering for the foodies this year One of Nelson’s most popular events, the Women’s Lifestyle Expo returns this weekend. Renee Murray of Peacocks Promotions Ltd, organisers of the expo, says with many other expos coming and going over the years, the Women’s Lifestyle Expo has flourished. “There are not many events in the region that see over 110 exhibits in one venue. One reason for the Expo’s continued success is the way we try and keep the Expo fresh for visitors, so year after year they can see new companies and new entertainment” This year there is lots on offer for the local “foodies”. Local Chef, Stuart Cliffin, from Relish Waterfront Dining will feature at this year’s Expo with cooking demonstrations held each day. There are also a range of gourmet goods to tempt your taste buds, such as wine, truffles, confectionary, organic coffee, natural lemonade, vodka and much more. Local brewery McCashin’s will feature on site with their variety of spirits, beer and cider. All their products are lovingly handcrafted from traditional recipes and they use only the finest natural ingredients, sourced mainly from Nelson. Local wineries will also be represented at the Expo including Milcrest Estate, Crighton Estate and Golden Hills Estates. One lucky Expo visitor could win a trip for two to beautiful Vanuatu with New Idea Magazine who will also feature at the Expo, handing out free copies of their latest issue while stocks last. With over 110 exhibitors the Expo offers something for everyone or all ages. Bring your friends, mothers or daughters or simply enjoy a day to spoil yourself. The Women’s Lifestyle Expo is on at the Trafalgar Centre, April 9 and 10, for more information or to join the VIP database and your chance to win see www.expos. co.nz or find us on Facebook. fitness

READY FOR A RIDE: Jean Lukies, 98, has just renewed her drivers licence much to the delight of her proud family. In the car ready for a ride are Nicole Lukies, Hayley Lukies, Toni Deas and Ella McGettigan. Photo: Andrew Board.
Grandma, 98, renews drivers licence Great-grandmother Jean Lukies celebrated her 98th birthday with family on Sunday, but she received her best present days earlier – her renewed drivers’ license. Her adoring family, whom she cooks a three course meal for every Sunday, were thrilled with her achievement and labelled her an “inspiration” and “amazing”. Jean lives on the Port Hills
and maintains a large garden herself and is over-the-moon she is still able to drive, although she doesn’t go far these days. “It’s just the freedom of knowing I can go wherever, I only go short distances now, just to town and back.” She says she wouldn’t like to lose her licence because while she reckons she can walk down the hill ok, getting
back up might be a bit tough. Jean, who was embarrassed by the attention when spoken to by Nelson Weekly, was given a one year extension to her licence after she passed an eye exam and fitness test. She must do the same every year on her birthday and she says she has no plans to stop any time soon. “I would hate to see my car in the garage gathering dust.”

NEWS IN BRIEF • Car salesmen Paul Kelly and Neil Howard are opening a new car yard in Nelson. They owned Value Vehicles but sold that to The Car Company two years ago. Paul says they currently operate a yard on the West Coast and will open the new Nelson yard this week in Gloucester St. It will also be called Value Vehicles. • Nelson’s calendar just got a little fuller with the announcement last week that two new events have secured funding from the NCC. The sponsorship, via the Nelson Events Marketing and Development Programme, is to help develop distinct events that will bring economic benefits to Nelson. The two events, a running race called Escape from Tane’s Forest and a festival dubbed Taste Nelson, will take place in June and September respectively. • To kick off Nelson Pride week, Q-Youth Nelson, along with Number 8 films will be hosting its first gay film night. The screening of the popular New York gay comedy ‘Violet Tendencies’ takes place at the Suter Theatre on Sunday April 10 at 7pm, tickets are available at www.number8films.com.

Solar hot water scheme moving south Nelson’s status as the countries solar capital is undisputed, but other regions are now following in our footsteps. Nelson City Council chief executive Keith Marshall has welcomed the news that Southland is following Nelson’s lead by introducing a pilot scheme to test and promote the use of solar hot water systems in the region. “We are very excited that the work we have done in Nelson over the past few years, first with the
pilot scheme and then launching the innovative new Solar Saver scheme, is now being used as a template for other areas in New Zealand. “The intention was always to put Nelson on the map as the solar centre of New Zealand and part of that is providing an example for others. We wish the Invercargill, Gore and Southland Councils all the best with their venture and will help in any way we can, short of sending them any of our sunshine hours of course,” says Keith.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes and owners of similar stature were all invited to take part in the Most Like Your Owner competition at the annual Million Paws Walk and Fun Dog show last weekend. The event, hosted by the Nelson SPCA, was held in Isel Park with more than 120 dogs attending and it raised over $2000 towards the care of animals at the SPCA. The Most Like Your Owner competition was just one of the events during the day which included an excellent display of talented dogs from the Nelson Dog Training Club. “It is wonderful to see so many people enter the Fun Dog Show. We love the see all the dogs who enter the Best Ex SPCA Dog,” says SPCA centre manager Donna Walzl. The competition also offers categories such as “Prettiest Girl” and “Most Handsome Boy.” “The event which get the most laughs is always getting your dogs to retrieve a cooked sausage, few were successful, but well done to those who were.” There was also an interesting display from the Nelson Husky Sled Team. The event provided entertainment for all the family, from bouncy castle, face painting, sausage sizzle, laughing clowns and much much more. Donna says she was thrilled it was such a success despite the wet weather. “Thanks also to all LOOK LIKE ME: The Most Like Your Owner competition at those who attended, it was a real the Nelson SPCA Million Paws Walk was a popular event and provided some great photo opportunities. success again.”
Hyundai helps St John in Canterbury recovery Hyundai is helping the recovery and rebuild of Canterbury with a big cash injection and vehicles in the quake-shattered region. Hyundai Motor Corporation, representing the worldwide organisation, joined with Hyundai New Zealand and its nationwide dealer network to hand over an immediate cheque of $200,000 to St John, which has been hit hard as it struggles to do its vital work. Hyundai New Zealand has provided additional assistance with vehicles for St John, which is currently operating out of a Christchurch car park with much of its infrastructure destroyed. Hyundai is providing an iMax van and two Santa Fe SUVs on long-term loan, as well as the cash donation. St John already has a fleet of Hyundai four-wheel-drives for response work. “Like all of New Zealand and the international community, Hyundai has been stunned to see the
Advertorial devastation wrought on Christchurch and Canterbury,” commented the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau. “The senior executives from Hyundai in South Korea have been asking us how best they could help, and of course we in New Zealand want to assist as well.” “After discussion with St John, which is doing such marvellous work on the ground, we decided a substantial cash donation was most needed right now.” “Hyundai Motor Corporation in South Korea has provided an immediate sum of $100,000, and we have matched that with an equal amount from Hyundai New Zealand and also our dealer network. “Each of the Hyundai dealers around the country has been generous in support, and we have coordinated their efforts and added our own contribution from Hyundai New Zealand.”

Nelson is tops, says US ‘travel therapist’ Andrew Board US travel agent Melodye Martinelli has seen a lot of places, she has been to 70 countries around the world, but there is one that she rates “without question” as her favourite place in the world, and you may have heard of it. “Nelson is the best; I swear to you, it is. For all-round things to do, the nature, the lakes, the ocean, the weather, oh my god the weather, Nelson is the best I’ve ever seen.” In fact Meldoye is not content to just send her American clients here, which she recommends to everyone travelling to New Zealand, she wants to move here herself. Meldoye has spent the past fortnight in Nelson (“the longest I’ve spent anywhere other than home”) and says she is already planning another trip, this time for two months. “If I can figure it out I would like to base myself here, I love it, I love Nelson.” Meldoye owns Let’s Travel Together, a Houston, Texas-based travel agency. She is a “Kiwi Specialist”, a label that is dished out by Tourism New Zealand to few travel agents that endure a gruelling exam on the country and are required to visit here once a year or attend at 100% Pure convention in the United States. She is also a self-styled “travel therapist” because she prides herself on matching the holiday of their dreams to each client. But while Meldoye is full of praise for

our natural beauty, it is not the city’s number one asset she says. “The reason Nelson is such a great place to visit is the people. The people are so friendly and welcoming. Everywhere I’ve been, from taxi drivers to wait staff at restaurants, everyone has been so nice. When people come to New Zealand they want to meet Kiwis and here they can do that.” In fact Nelsonians were so friendly, when she accidentally crashed a wedding at the
Boat House, not knowing it was a private function, she was invited to stay and enjoy the band and open bar. “I was here on business and on a personal and business note I would like to thank everyone I dealt with. Nelson is number one, the best place in the world and I’ll be back.”

Local man spends life savings in bid to save his life
A fundraiser is being held at the Monaco Resort this weekend to help Jon Anda with his increasing medical costs. Jon has a rare auto immune disease called CIDP which he has had for two years. He has tried many types of treatments such as rounds of chemotherapy, plasma therapy and steroids. He is known as a ‘non responder’ and does not respond to medication and was at the point where he had run out of options, and was beginning to deteriorate. He has just arrived back from Chicago, after spending two and a half months there having a stem cell transplant which will hopefully save his life and totally re-start his immune system. This is a ground breaking new treatment, but it has cost Jon over $250,000. The Stem cell transplant has so far been successful and Jon is beginning to recover. He has already spent his life savings on treatments and has been unable to work since he was diagnosed. Before Jon got sick he was a pilot and owned his own business. The event is an auction and quiz evening at the Monaco Resort, on 8 April at 7pm in the Marquee. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Dames on Bridge St, or Pots and Prints on Tahunanui Drive. More than $10,000 worth of donated items and vouchers from local businesses have been received.

Final prepartions for Brassed Off actors With a cast of 12 actors and 12 musicians, ranging in age from 4 to 72, Brassed Off is shaping up to be a popular production for all ages. In fact you could argue it already is. Ticket sales are going well according to Theatre Alive director and producer of the Brassed Off, Hugh Neill. He says only 20 tickets remain for the opening night in the 340-seated Theatre Royal while ticket sales for the other seven shows are “strong”. Brassed Off was made famous by the movie of the same name starring Ewan McGregor in the mid-1990’s. Hugh says the show at the Theatre Royal this week follows the movie closely and will be a great spectacle. “You are always a bit nervous before a show but we have ran through it a couple of times and it looks great. I’m very excited about opening night.” Theatre Alive are planning to run four productions this year, Brassed Off being the first. Hugh says the production is suitable for people of all ages and having such a strong musical influence will also attract people.
“We have the wonderful Tasman Brass Ensemble in the show, led by Nick Sharpe, and they are great to deal with. People, I’m sure, will be thrilled with what they have to offer.” Hugh says he is pleased with how the production has come together and he is really looking forward to his first show of the year kicking off. Brassed Off debuts this Friday night at the Theatre Royal. For ticketing information visit www.everyman.co.nz. A week after Brassed Off finishes, rehearsals start for the next Theatre Alive show.

• Normal shipping this week consisted of some container ships, several large fishing vessels, some small fishing vessels and some super yacht industry vessels. Nelson appears to be becoming an attractive venue for the super yachts and we will probably be rearranging the Port accordingly. Many of them are coming down from Auckland either to have repairs or just to sightsee the region.
• For kayakers I want to again encourage them to use lights when kayaking during before sunset or after duck, many are still not doing this.

• One issue I wanted to talk about this week was the number of people who have been out on the water this week. I want to say thanks to the majority of people who abide by the rules. However there are still some fools who just don’t believe that it can go wrong for them. As Harbour Master I want them to know that it can, and most likely will go wrong. We had jet skiers who were flagrantly disobeying the law, getting amongst the swimmers and amongst the berths. I want the message to by clear to people who want to be stupid in the harbour that we can and will fine them and prosecute them. Several were spoken to on the weekend.

CHEERS: New citizens Karen and Barry Driver celebrated becoming New Zealanders with a glass of wine. Photo: Andrew Board.
Nelson’s newest citizens toast to being Kiwi, finally Nelson’s population took a bit of a spike upwards last Wednesday as 30 people swore allegiance to the Queen and became New Zealand citizens. The 30 people from six countries were officially made citizens at Nelson City Council at a ceremony, before mayor Aldo Miccio. Similar ceremonies are held about four times a year in Nelson. Barry and Karen Driver, formerly
of Britain, say they were overjoyed to have finally got their New Zealand citizenship after living in Nelson for five years. Each person received a native tree and a certificate as part of the celebrations. In total, 17 of the latest Kiwi’s are from Britain, five from the United States, five from Myanmar, two from South Africa and one from Sweden.

Nelson volunteers continue to help in Chch recovery
PLAY TIME: Toy Museum owner Paul Emery with some of the old toys he has at his Waimea Rd museum. Among his toys are some from the 1960’s. Photo: Andrew Board.
Local Toy Museum a passion for collector For his eighth birthday Paul Emery was given an Action Man toy, he was so excited he threw up. So his love of toys, even as an adult, certainly would not have surprised any of his birthday guests that day. Paul says he has been a toy collector since the early 1980’s after seeing a collection in London. Since then he has spent years trawling for rare toys or toys he remembers from his childhood. “Growing up in England I was brought up with television so a lot of the char-
acters I remember from my youth and that is one of the things that initially drew me to toy collecting.” Paul moved to Nelson a couple of years ago and has since opened his own toy museum, displaying most of his collection. The Toy Museum allows people to come in and have a nostalgic look at toys of their childhood says Paul. “It’s nice when people say they recognise toys from when they were kids and it can bring back nice memories.” He says the one toy he would grab in
a fire is the same Action Man figurine from his eighth birthday. “I’ve still got my one from my childhood but it’s a bit banged up so the one I’ve got in the museum is the same figurine but still in its original box.” Among other toys are Star Wars figurines that were bought cheap “because nobody thought the films would be popular”, trolls, smurfs and even WWF wrestling figurines. Toy Museum on Waimea Rd is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Three members of the Nelson Tasman volunteer civil defence response team NZ-RT2 have returned to Christchurch to assist with recovery for a second time. The trio have been based there helping out with a mixture of tasks including inspecting car park buildings, carrying out inspections with engineers, and escorting business owners back in to their buildings, says Nelson civil defence. The three volunteers all have experience that is very useful to the current phase of recovery. Barry Rowe, team leader for NZ-RT2, is a registered valuer with a sound operating knowledge of commercial buildings, Kevin Alderton is a Barry Rowe. tradesman with extensive experience working on commercial buildings and Ian Watts is a senior land search and rescue leader also with detailed knowledge of commercial buildings. Roger Ball, manager of emergency management says the team are in good spirits. “They have been happy to contribute to the process of doing detailed building evaluations but realise there is still a huge amount of work to be done.”

The Nelson Cycle Trails Trust is getting into gear with the appointment of an executive officer and the launch of a logo competition. Newly appointed executive officer Fiona Newey, formerly of St John, is wasting no time in raising the profile of the trust and what the region has to offer in cycle tourism. “With the development of the Tasman Loop and the Dun Mountain Trail, as part of the New Zealand national cycleway, our region will offer riders a world class cycling experience,” she says. “As a first step in putting Nelson on the cycle tourism map we want to work with the region’s artists to develop a brand that captures the ‘wow’ factor of cycling in Nelson.” Fiona says the brand should encapsulate Nelson’s stunning scenery, climate, historic railways, artisan rural communities, traditions of tobacco and hops, boutique breweries, vineyards, olive groves, festivals and port settlements. The word is going out now to schools, artists’ net-
works and to the general community in the quest for a logo and the accompanying words that will form the Cycle Trails Trust brand. Judges will select the raw concept entries for further development by local graphic designer Jane Reed of SeeReed Visual Communications. “We are looking for branding that can be used on all our printed material - from the website to tee shirts,” says Fiona. “We’re also interested in a catchier title that doesn’t need to include the actual name of the trust.” Entries must be received by post by 5pm on Friday 22 April 2011 to be in for the cash prizes of $500 each for the logo and accompanying words. A Facebook page has been set up with all the details and conditions of entry. The Nelson cycle trails are a joint initiative of the Nelson City Council, the Tasman District Council, the Nelson Cycle Trails Trust and the New Zealand Cycle Trail project.

Local store first to be rebranded Richmond’s Payless the Stock Liquidator on the corner of Gladstone Rd and Queen St has reopened its doors. The store, formally known as Payless Plastics, was re-branded to reflect the fact that only 25 percent of their goods were plastic. John Arbuckle, owner of the store, says he has rebranded so the store can go back to basics. The Richmond store is the third in the country and the first in the South Island to undergo the transformation. The shop has experienced huge changes over the past month with manager Wendy Hunt saying it is now brighter, more open and with a fantastic range of products. “This includes a great range of consumables, but we are still stocking the best products from the past, all at fantastic, competitive prices.” Payless now have bargain bins with different price points starting at $2, where customers can rummage through and find a bargain. Wendy says the feedback to date has been great. “Customers like the look of the new shop and they love the new prices.” Wendy and the rest of the staff look forward to seeing both new and existing customers.
Tahuna School gala a splash Tahunanui School says it now has enough money to build its new swimming pool, thanks to its annual gala on Sunday. Construction on the new pool will commence as early as April 16 after $25,000 was raised in another spectacular gala day. Highlights were the pumpkin growing competition and the swimathon, where students swam the length of the Cook Strait. Kate Bryant’s pumpkin was the biggest, weighing in at 129 kilograms while 51 students swam a combined 1450 lengths in the final swim in the current pool. Pictured is Hayden French, 10, as he dives face first down the waterslide. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Morris dancers provide colour to Autumn Fair
Nelson Morris have been dancing their socks off recently over the last two weekends. They danced in whites doing the Cotswold tradition at the Autumn Fair, St Johns Church, Hira on Saturday and they joined in with other morris sides from Blenheim and Christchurch at Hanmer Springs for a weekend of dance on 25 - 27 March. Nelson Morris have more recently been learning the Border tradition wearing black and silver tatter coats and blacking their faces. Years ago this was done so that the dancers would not be recognised by their employers, as they used to dance for money to top up their low wages. The Autumn Fair on Saturday attracted a good crowd which enjoyed entertainment by the Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus, Irish and Morris dancing and Flossie the Balloon Lady. Floral art and harvest produce was on display in the church. If you are interested in learning morris dancing please contact Jan and Steve on 03 545 2546, email: rule.king@xtra.co.nz or look at their web site: www.wix.com/nelsonmorris/nelsonmorris. They commence practices on Thursdays from April 7 and are Nelson Morris Dancers back row from left; Barry Scotson, Dorothy Hambly, Joan Holmes, June Hayden, Vic looking for more dancers and musicians. Nelson St John cadets earn highest award
Four Nelson young people were acknowledged in Christchurch for their hard work and service to their community, with St John’s highest youth award. St John Youth Cadets Jacob Cuthbertson, Hannah Duffell, Trent Fairburn, and Andy Ly received their Grand Prior’s Award at an official ceremony last weekend. The Cadets’ awards were presented to them by the Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand, who is Prior of St John in New Zealand. The Grand Prior Award is the highest award, other than awards for bravery, which St John confers on its youth members. Young people complete six compulsory badges and six others of their choice from a range of 27 subjects. Tracy Simonsen, St John Nelson Marlborough District youth manager, says the achievement of the four Cadets is fantastic. “These young people have worked exceptionally hard to achieve this milestone.” The Grand Prior Award programme is the principal syllabus for St John Cadets. Cadets engage in a variety of activities that can be completed either independently or collaboratively.

FC Nelson debuts as senior football kicks off
Nelson’s biggest football club made its debut on Saturday with eight senior teams playing across four divisions. A merger of four previous clubs, FC Nelson now has more players than any other in the top-of-the-south, but its dominace in numbers didn’t nessercary translate to wins on the pitch. In the first division, FC Nelson United beat Nelson Suburbs 2-0 but FC Nelson College drew with Marlborough and FC Nelson Metro was thumped 11-0 by a superstar Richmond Athletic team. In the lower grades five FC Nelson teams played with one winning, two drawing and two losing. Despite the draw, FC Nelson College’s result was one of the round one highlights for the club. Developing young players is its main priority, but it nearly caused a major upset at the Broads on Saturday. Last year’s runners up Marlborough Mariners snatched an equalizer late in the game to earn a 2-2 draw. Nelson College head-coach Dave Shaw says the draw was the fair result with either team dominating a 45 minute spell each. Goalkeeper Matt Macquet made a strong return to the squad after missing the pre-season tournament and captain Jono Drew was at his assured best, slotting in between both center-back and striker throughout the game. Last Sunday 150 men took part in the Port Nelson Blokes Day Out and organiser Greg Dykzeul says he was thrilled with the turn out. “We had guys of all shapes, sizes and ages and they all had a great time.” Jon Linyard was the overall winner but Greg says the event is designed as a fun event for not just the top competitors. This Sunday Greg is back organising the Taylor’s Women’s Triathlon, which has a full field once again.

Codes after officials as winter sport kicks into action Everyone loves a referee... well most do and let’s face it, sport would be pretty hopeless without them. That’s why Nelson Bays Football and Tasman Rugby Union are on the hunt for more referees as the winter sport season kicks into gear. Both codes are short of a few officials for the upcoming season and both say they are “vital” to the game. “Without refs we don’t have a game, simple,” says TRU referee boss Nigel Jones. Ian Hull, referee development officer for Nelson Bays Football says he is looking for another few referee’s and says the ideal candidate is someone who knows the game well or used to play it and is keen to keep fit and stay involved in the sport. “We provide a real pathway for our young referees, from local football, all the way to Fifa level if they want that.” Nigel says TRU has similar
pathways in place for aspiring rugby referees and says anyone keen to give it a go will be exposed to plenty of support and training. People that are in short supply are former players who just want to ref the game at a local level. “We have several guys that have no aspirations of reffing at a higher level and are happy to be giving back to their community,” says Ian. Both men say referee abuse isn’t much of a problem in Nelson, although thick skin is needed for the job. “Sport is about passion so people get upset and emotional when things don’t go right and we wouldn’t want that to change. Without passion sport would be pretty dire,” says Nigel. For people keen to look at being a football referee visit www. nelsonbaysfootball.co.nz and for those keen on being a rugby referee email nigel.jones@tasmanrugby.co.nz.

Nayland softballers make top four Nayland College finished fourth at the South Island secondary school softball championships last week. Nayland lost to Waimea College 11-0 in a third/fourth playoff at Saxton Field. A number of New Zealand representatives left Nayland last year so the side was in rebuilding and featured plenty of year nine students. Coach Julie Brockie says the young team should hold their heads up high after impressive results. Pictured is Nayland College’s Mitchell Ross as he strikes at the ball during tournament. Monaco fun run ends successful first season Last Monday night the popular Honest Lawyer fun run and walk signed off for the summer season, but organisers are now looking at an Autumn series. The series, which started in January, is new to Nelson and attracted 18 keen athletes, growing in numbers each week,
by the end of March the tenth event saw 75 entrants line up at the starting line. The event is very much a family affair with many families taking part. The attraction is the great course, out and back around the Monaco Peninsula, which is scenic flat and fast or slow if you wish. The loyal sponsors provide great weekly prizes, from The Honest Lawyer, Cityfitness, Frontrunner, Speights and PIC'S Peanut Butter. The final saw most improved walker and runGOOD HONEST FUN: Honest Lawyer fun run/walk com- ner awarded prizes petitors from left; Paddy Tarrent, Shirley Beggs, Pam Bark- from PIC and series spot prize winer, Astrid Westerbeek and Nicki Alexander.
ner receiving new pair of running shoes from Carson Blakely of Frontrunner. The series has had a great start, and organisers are being constantly asked to extend to an Autumn series, which is something they say they are looking at. The most improved walker award for the series went to Martha Phillips. The winner of the Honest Endeavor prize went to Harry Feasey, who at 12 has juvenile arthritis. Harry has managed to overcome his arthritis and run the event for three weeks, where he managed to improve his time each time, eventually taking six minutes off his original time. In the process Harry also won the prize for the most improved runner of the series. “Well done Harry you are a true inspiration for everyone with or without a disability,” says race director Garry Butler.

JAB skills training a big hit with youngesters Stoke’s JAB, had about 90 children attend its skills training and sausage sizzle on the weekend. About seven coaches split the kids into groups and ran them through some pre season skills. It was well attended and much appreciated that the parents, coaches and children came down on a Sunday morning, says JAB club captain Vanessa Kingsbury. “We will also be having our intermediate grade trials and weigh in on Sunday 10 April at 10am. If players could be there promptly at 10am so that we can start on time.” If anyone has any questions about this day they can contact Nigel or Vanessa on 541 9241 or 027 452 6485.

Stoke back on track
After 30 minutes of play Accessman Stoke were staring down the barrel at another big defeat, but then the home side clicked into gear and put five tries on Huia and take the game 30-22. Fullback Brenton Connell scored first for Stoke but No 8 Stu Tunnicliff couldn’t convert from in front of the posts. He did however make up for the missed kick by scoring a pushover try just minutes later, and crucially, just before the half time break. At halftime Stoke was still behind on the scoreboard but had all the momentum going into the second half. It picked up where it left off in the second forty, scoring three well-constructed tries to prop Siaki Peti, flanker Tyler McKinnon-Stevenson and midfielder Sione Holani, the latter at his menacing best, making several key breaks in the game. Div 2 heartache as conversion drops short
Coming off last weeks’ loss to Waimea, the team, with the help of some old heads, turned over a new leaf and showed a much more spirited effort against a good Huia team. The game was a close encounter all the way through. In the final minute Lesley Pulu fended off and out ran the tired Huia backs to score in the corner for Stoke. The kick for conversion dropped a few inches short, meaning Huia took out the game by 1 point. The final score was 22-21 to Huia. Player of the day was number 5 Luke Mincher. With the new coaches and management on board the team is looking forward to having a great season and being in real contention for the championship.
