Eye test has driver seeing double

Phillip Rollo

A learner driver was told she could not sit her restricted licence test after failing an eye screening test at the Nelson AA, only to pass the same test in Richmond just hours later.

But David McLister, the AA driver and vehicle licensing general manager, says four people have checked both machines and that they are working “correctly”. An 18 year old girl, who did not want to be named, booked her restricted licence practical test online and was told to be there

30 minutes prior. But because there was a large queue of customers, the girl only had ten minutes to spare when she was served at the counter. “Because it’s a simple test they get you to go through a couple of things and she failed me straight away. There was supposed to

be three columns of letters but I could only see two.” Once the eye test was completed and failed, the girl was told there was not enough time to put the driving examination on hold as

Locals in sandcastle comp FROM PAGE 1 from sandcastles all over New Zealand have been loaded to the Hyundai New Zealand Facebook page and the photo that attracts the most “likes” will win a Hyundai Santa Fe for a year. Entry to the competition closes at the end of next week so there is still time for people to enter their best sandcastle into the competition. Gaye says along with the necessary tool kit made up of spades, paint brushes, brooms and a weed sprayer the group also brought along “the quintessential kiwi picnic basket, complete with ginger beer”. It took around two hours to build and the sand sculpture was based on the idea of Nelson as the sunshine capital and was a depiction of the Maori legend where Maui snares the sun, TamaNui-Tera, says Brian. she intended to get a clearance from a local optometrist. She was then informed she would have to pay an extra $88 to rebook the driving test – a fee that was later cleared by the AA when they sent out a voucher and an apology. “I had to wait in line for so long so by the time they told me I had failed it was 12:40pm and the test was at 12:45pm. I found an optometrist that could get me in right then but they couldn’t hold out. They said I had to be there at 12:45pm or I couldn’t sit it.” She was given the option of a second test, but again the results were the same. On her way home, knowing she had passed the exact same eye test at the Richmond

AA agency just a year prior when obtaining her learners licence, she walked in and requested an eye test – which she passed perfectly. “I was so mad. I was already so frustrated because they sat me through a two minute test and told me I had bad eye sight. I had been to optometrists before who had told me my eye sight is perfect.” The next day the girl, who had an eye operation when she was five years old, booked in for a full visual examination at a local optometrist, which she passed with flying colours and was then able to re-book her driving test. David says more than one million eye examinations are done every year through AA and that five per cent of those fail with only half needing corrective lenses.

Car theft doubles

Police urge people to lock their cars at night Theft from parked cars has doubled on this time last year and Nelson police are urging the public to stop the problem by locking their cars. Since the start of the year 95 incidents have been reported to police, many of those involving unlocked cars with stolen items, generally wallets, cash and small electronic items. Acting Area Commander Inspector Ross Lienert says the incident rate is about double what they would normally expect. “One of the most disturbing trends is the number of insecure vehicles that are being targeted” says Ross. “It is a problem that we have been trying to deal with in Nelson for many years. For whatever reason Nelson people seem to think it is safe to leave valuable items in unlocked vehicles, or within sight from outside vehicles. This is unfortunately not the case.” Police are asking members of the public to en-

sure that valuable items are removed from vehicles and that all vehicles are locked when they are not being used. Where possible people should avoid parking their vehicles in poorly lit areas or secluded locations. Police are currently working on identifying offenders however Ross says it is not something they can do alone. “A common problem we encounter is when members of the public do not tell police of things that are happening at the time. Police staff often get told ‘I didn’t want to bother you because I know you are busy’. Yes we can be stretched at times, but we prioritise our calls for service constantly and this is a priority for us. If you see or hear something that does not look right make the call straight away on “111”. If you have any information relating to the thefts please contact your local police station or if you prefer, call Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111. McDonald’s smashes drive thru record mArkET DAY: Trafalgar St Market Day is happening again this Saturday February 9. The market day has more than 80 stalls with everything from clothes and food to arts and craft and more. Entertainment will include roving musicians, street performances, face painting and balloons. Buskers will also be performing as part of the Buskerburgoo Festival at the top of Trafalgar St. The market day runs from 9am to 3pm. concErT SEllS oUT: Tickets have sold out for the second of two Classic Hits Winery Tour events at Neudorf Vineyards this month. The Tour, features Fat Freddy’s Drop, Anika, Boh & Hollie, The Adults and special guest, NZ’s Got Talent winner Clara van Wel. Nelsonians who missed out on the February 23 show still have a chance to purchase tickets on February 22, at winerytour.co.nz. nEW ciTizEnS: Thirty new Nelsonians swore allegiance to New Zealand at a special ceremony at Nelson City Council last week. Amongst the list are 15 people from Britain, three from South Africa, seven from Myanmar, one Filipino, one Iranian American, one Thai, one Czech and a German-Swiss.

McDonald’s Nelson store manager Matthew Hall and shift manager Andrew Oliver celebrate breaking its drive thru record. Photo: Andrew Board.

On a quest to break the record for the number of cars visiting the drive thru in one hour, McDonald’s Nelson smashed the record in the first 30 minutes, selling 527 Big Macs. To help them break the record, McDonald’s offered three Big Mac’s per car for the price of $2 during the two hour period last Thursday. A story appeared in Nelson Weekly last Tuesday and that was enough to see people turn up in droves says store manager Matthew Hall. “I’ve never seen anything like it in Nelson before. Cars were left, right and centre. They were everywhere but our staff did a great job and we got everyone served really quickly.” Although the record was broken in the first half hour and was almost doubled in the first hour, the record would have fallen in the second

hour as well, if needed. Matthew says he was impressed not only with the turnout but that everyone knew about the promotion. “I was quite amazed with the response, it was far more than I ever thought. The article in the Weekly was huge.” The success of the promotion means that the Nelson store is leading a national competition on the speed of its drive thru and with just a week remaining in the competition it will be hard for it to be overtaken. Shift manager Andrew Oliver says he was also surprised with the turnout. “Every single car knew what was going on. Customers in the line were saying to us ‘how are you going? What are your numbers like?’ It was so busy that I think I ran a half marathon in the first 15 minutes.”

Museum considers building options A meeting held last Tuesday following the closure of the regional museum’s research facility has revealed significant work is needed before its reopening. The Tasman Bays Heritage Trust board met to discuss their options after the building came well under the 33 per cent threshold needed to be deemed not an earthquake risk after an engineering

evaluation last month. Nelson Provinicial Museum chief executive Peter Millward says several options came out of the meeting, but expected it would be a couple of weeks before they could look at taking any further steps. He says after the building was built in the 1970s, two mezzanine floors were added in order to create storage in the roof loft

and it is those areas that need to be seismically strengthened. “Now in light of the evaluation people are saying those areas need to be stronger. They are not as safe as they need to be given the possibility of an earthquake,” he says. “We are a couple of weeks away yet from some physical options.”

Busy start for new medical centre After just one month operating out of its brand new building on Waimea Rd, the Medical and Injury Centre is already seeing an increase in people using the facility compared with previous years says practice manager Diane Wiren. Diane puts the early signs of success down to the accessbility and location of the building after it was built on

hospital grounds next to the accident and emergency department. “We have seen an increase in attendances compared to previous years. We now have higher visibility and a better location with people better able to find us.” The purpose built facility which was called the Nelson Region Afterhours and Duty Doctor, opened in December and

Diane says it has been functioning well over the holiday season. Patients seem to be happy, satisfied and appreciative of the new environment she says and having dedicated car parks has been a big improvement, making visiting the centre more convenient for visitors and regular patients. Steve Lavery from Nelson Bays Primary Health says the GP network which

4

owns the facility are very pleased with the new centre now that it can offer better afterhours care for their patients. “Things are going really well, the GP members think the facility is fantastic. Everything is really positive.” The new centre was opened by Prime Minister John Key late last year and can be found at 98 Waimea Rd.

Flags go up for anniversary day

As most Nelsonians celebrated the region’s birthday by crawling out of bed a little later than they usually do on a Monday morning, Addo Mulders was loading his truck with flags and a sword. The proud Nelson man drives to the Abel Tasman statue at Tahunanui beach and flies two Nelson flags and bolts Tasman’s ceremonial sword in place – the only day of the year it happens. Addo – who was instrumental in getting the statue of the first European to reach New

Zealand put up – says the statue is important to all of Nelson and the surrounding regions. “It’s not just Nelson city that should celebrate, Golden Bay and Tasman also celebrate Nelson Anniversary Day so they should feel just as much a part of this.” The statue was officially unveiled on anniversary day in 2000 and Addo has flown the flags there on anniversary day every year since. As he finished cleaning the information board and with the flags flying he stood back and admired his work: “Beautiful, isn’t it?”

Nelson fire brigade needs volunteers

The Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade needs some more members. Pictured from left are senior fire fighter Chris Dyer, fire fighter Kyall Thompson and qualified fire fighter Kerry Donnelly. Photo: Andrew Board.

The Nelson volunteer fire brigade is once again seeking more members to bolster its ranks. Two years ago Nelson Weekly published a story about low numbers at the Nelson brigade. Fourteen people came along to check it out the following week but senior fire fighter Chris Dyer says they’re back to square one. “We had a really good response last time but some didn’t pass the breathing test because they had asthma, some have moved away from Nelson, one had to have a shoulder operation so had to go and others were just unable to carry on due to work commitments.” So the brigade is now back down to six and Chris says he’d like to see that double. Vol-

unteers practice once a week on a Sunday night and attend jobs roughly four to six times a month. “It goes up and down but last month has been busy. Because we’re part of the paid staff we’re not super busy but also because we’re part of the paid staff we don’t get woken at 3 o’clock in the morning for an alarm going off. Generally if we go, it’s an actual job, not a false alarm.” The minimum age for volunteers is 16 and Chris says there is no upper limit. He says volunteers learn all sorts of skills, including first aid. It has a great social feel as well as helping the community. If you’re interested in learning more you can call them on 546 2100.

Photographer recreates her history As Nelson photographer Jessica Shirley was going through some old photographs she inherited from her great aunt she thought about how best to use her latest piece on inspiration. The results are quite eye-catching. Jessica, a mother of two, says she was flicking through a photography magazine when she saw the idea called ‘dear photograph’. She decided to try to use some of her old photographs by holding them up against the same backdrop in 2013 and taking a picture. She says she’s thrilled with how they turned out and would like to try the idea with others people’s photos. “If anyone has any Nelson photographer Jessica photos in front Shirley has been taking photos of famous Nelson of Nelson. Local stars to shine at Opera in the Park Andrew Board

• Shipping this week consisted of the navy HMS Taupo, four container ships, a big car carrier, a methanol tanker, the small bulk carrier with fertiliser, a general carrier with steel, and an anchor handler departed, eleven large fishing vessels moved in around or out of the port. • Did you know there are rules around nets, how they are identified and where they can be deployed. Call your local MAAF or the council to find out what applies to you. An ignorant person deployed one inside the swimming area recently then took it upon himself to redefine the swimming area by cutting away the black buoys off Tahunanui beach. This sort of stupidity won’t be tolerated and the police are involved. Many thanks to MAAF and the police for their assistance. • Spear fishermen are having a successful time in the bay however we are hearing of some close calls when they don’t use a dive flag. We were advised of three near misses when boats have seen a spear fishermen just pop up nearby. It doesn’t take more than one strike of a hull or propeller to make a terrible mess. By the time this goes to print the long weekend will be over. We trust you all had a safe one. If in doubt – don’t go out

Singing stars from around New Zealand may be coming to light up the Trafalgar Park stage at Opera in the Park next week but local performers are also promising to bring their A game. Tahunanui’s Trudi Wilson is one of the latest acts to be confirmed for the concert and will join a host of top performers. She says the chance to strut her stuff in front of a huge audience while rubbing shoulders with top performers has her nervous and excited. “For us locals to get to mingle with the likes of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra and Julia Deans and all the rest of them is really cool and everyone I’ve spoken to has been so lovely about it.” The Opera in the Park is a biennial event hosted by Nelson City Council and this year will feature rising international soprano star Madeleine Pierard and her mezzo-soprano sister Anna Pierard, along with New Zealand favourites Don McGlashan and Julia Deans, all supported by accomplished conductor Marc Taddei and Orchestra Wellington. Trudi, a singing teacher at Nelson College for Girls and Waimea College, has performed with some of the country’s top acts including Billy T James and Sir Howard Morrison but says performing at Opera in the Park will be a huge thrill. “It’s big, but it’s big because I’m not

doing it with a band too, this time it’s just me up there. It’s great to have something like this in Nelson too, as a teacher this is the sort of stuff that I want to see my students do.” Trudi will perform one song, a rearranged cover of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good. Trudi says she’s excited about the big day. “I’ve over the moon that I’ve even been asked. I’m really excited and I’m excited that I get to buy a new dress,” she says.

“To stop my nerves – and this may sound weird – but I try to concentrate on things like the floor because you know that it will be uneven and that I think takes away from the fact that there’s squillions of people out there.” Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children aged 5 – 15, and under 5s are free. Tickets are on sale at Everyman Records, 249 Hardy St, phone 548 3083, or book online at www.everyman.co.nz.

New grape variety excites The most popular grape variety in Austria was the focus of the weekend’s International Aromatic Wine Symposium, and according to a local winemaker Grüner Veltliner is ready to make a name for itself in the hospitality industry. Chris Seifried of Seifried Estate, one of around 15 wineries around New Zealand growing Grüner Veltliner, says it is very favourable with food and that there was potential for New Zealand to develop a strong reputation for it. “It’s a really good restaurant food; I don’t think it’s going to be something that’s in every supermarket in five years. Hopefully we can keep it pretty niche and as a special

wine, so to speak,” says Chris. “Grüner Veltliner is to Austria what sauvignon blanc is to New Zealand. It’s key to our export and key to our success internationally.” Award-winning Austrian winemaker Markus Huber was the keynote speaker talking about the popular white wine. The International Aromatic Wine Symposium, held at Petite Fleur, Seifried Estate, featured more than 100 wine delegates from all over the world and is held locally every three years. Organisers hope that the positive response from the delegates, which included international media, will increase the country’s wine exposure ten fold.

Tuesday January 22: Aspiring actress Claudia Peters has received several fundraising suggestions from Nelson Weekly readers after telling us about her plight to raise enough money to accept a scholarship to the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts. Suggestions she has had so far include contacting Sticky TV, putting on a concert and performing for the Dave Upfold Comedy Hypnotist show. Claudia is currently in talks with Dave to put on a show at the end of Feb where all funds raised would go to her cause. Claudia has also set up a PledgeMe account which you can visit at www.pledgeme.co.nz/749

Nelmac win fourth straight Tug-of-Peace Chance to win with your neighbours It’s always a good idea to get on with your neighbours, but now there is extra incentive. Neighbours Day will once again be held in Nelson this year, giving people the chance to win prizes ranging from a cake to a skip hire. Neighbourhood Support Nelson is promoting Neighbours Day Aotearoa across Nelson this year and coordinator Kim MacDonald says the day is about turning streets into neighbourhoods. “That means encouraging all of us in Nelson to go one step further in getting to know our neighbours on a special day each year. Whether it’s a first wave or smile, a chat over the fence, inviting someone in for a cuppa or holding a street barbeque, every connection makes our neighbourhoods more friendly, fun and safe.” Neighbours Day is on March 23 and 24. To enter the draw for one of the prizes, get a team of three neighbours together and let Kim know what your plans are for Neighbours Day in your neighbourhood. An application form can be picked up from Kim at the Stoke Police Station or emailed to you. For more information call 547 2040 or email nsup port@xtra.co.nz. You will have the option to go into a draw for either a cake to share at a morning or afternoon tea or a dessert evening, a Pestell’s BBQ meat pack for a neighbourhood gathering or a skip hire for the weekend for a neighbourhood clean-up. Applications close on Friday February 22 with winners announced on Monday, February 25.

Nelmac has pulled itself across the line for a fourth straight Tug of Peace title. The Nelson company proved too much for the Nelson police in the semi-final and former champs Talley’s in the twopart final. Nelmac brought some new tactics to the competition this year, rotating the squad throughout the heats and finals and even getting in a practice pull the night before. Earlier in the competition – a fundraiser for the Nelson Regional Hospice Trust – teams competed in heats to determine whether they went through to the finals or to a repecharge. Wayne Christensen (Hori) yells some encouragment to Julian Kereopa of the ANZ were quickly eliminated and AMP had a tough time with team captain NiTalley’s team in their Tug of Peace battle against the Nelson police. gel Rukuwai losing every single coin toss. Staig & Smith and Mediaworks were also amongst those battling it out in the repecharge with Staig & Smith winning the final of the lightweights. In the big boys league the Nelson fire service were hammered by the police early on and Talley’s, cheered on by some vocal fans, beat Fulton Hogan to earn a spot in the semi-finals. Talley’s then won a titanic battle with the police, lasting close to 50 seconds, to earn a spot in the final against the reigning champions. Over two pulls, the eight-man Nelmac team won both to reclaim the Tug-ofPeace title for 2013. Organisers say they were yet to tally up the total raised for Nelmac celebrates retaining the Tug-of-Peace title. Photos: Andrew Board. the hospice on the day.

Foxy memories: Reading the advert about Foxy Lady in your paper today took me back so many years to when Patricia Storey had her underwear shop in Upper Trafalgar St. If I remember correctly, it was first near Woolworths and she then moved to Bridge St. My memory goes back to the war years in 1942 when my mother took me there for my first “training bra” as she called it then, at age 14.

Patricia Storey always had a picture of her huge cat Charlie on the wall. Does anyone else remember this lady? Did Foxy Lady take over this business? I still do my shopping at Foxy Lady. Baking a new take on flowers Nelson woman Dianna Walton has just made wriggling out of a Valentine’s gift next week even harder for men around the region. When Dianna asked for some flowers from her husband last year, she was disappointed when he flat out refused; giving the excuse that you can’t use flowers for anything practical ‘so what’s the point?’. She was determined he wouldn’t have an excuse this Valentine’s Day. “I love flowers, but he said if you can’t eat them or use them there’s no point, they just die. So it was really quite a joke with him,” she says. “So I asked if you could eat them whether he would get them for me and he said yes, so that’s how it started.” Dianna has spent months perfecting her cupcake flowers and say they are a practical option for giving flowers to loved ones this Valentine’s Day. “It took me three hours to do the first one but I was pretty determined

It’s all in the flick of the wrist.” She baked some for friends and after receiving favourable responses decided to start her own business, calling it DeeCups. Each “bouquet” is custom-made so Dianna

says if a customer’s partner has favourite flowers she can make them to match “in most cases” and they are even cheaper than a bunch of fresh flowers. To get in touch with Dianna email her on deecups@orcon.net.nz or call 021 217 7054.

The head teacher of Garin College believes it is just a matter of time before most other schools in Nelson follow its lead and make computers compulsory for students. The catholic secondary school made laptops and other personal computing devices compulsory for all year nine students this year – a decision which is already being labelled a success. “This is the way of the world. I would expect every other secondary school to be in some form of this next year,” he says. “They will make trials this year with half classes so they’ll only be a year off.” Some of the reasons the school made the decision was to continue with the times, cut down on stationery costs and because most students used computers for homework and during class assignments anyway. While there are no physical school diaries and notebooks, John admits that parents still had to put some workbooks on the stationery list. “We’ve

People were worried about this wireless environment affecting people’s health but this year that question did not rise and nobody voted against it.” Since the decision was made, there are now around 150 of the 380 non-year nine students with a licence to connect to the school’s network. John says one negative aspect has been the fact

some students are operating laptops that were not recommended, because they would struggle connecting to the same network that the rest of the students were on. “Some got Apples and they’re struggling with the wireless. Some people have iPads and Androids and there are extra steps to take, but everything else is going great.” Facebook is currently blocked on the network, although John believes that should change during the course of the year.

erally weighed down with the lovely white blossoms and I think that every honey bee around is working on the flowers – I have even seen two and three battling to get into the same blossom. These are highly ornamental trees with a very rich supply of nectar set in wide open blooms. They also have an upright habit, which makes them very handy in smaller gardens where space can be limited. The Eucryphia lucida is the “Australian Leatherwood”, which produces excellent honey and is grown primarily in Tasmania and the nymansay is from a Chilean variety with the flowers being up to 75mm across and it also has a soft, sweet fragrance and has been described in some articles as the “ultimate garden shrub”. I would call it a small tree as it can get up to 3 metres in height. The photo this week is the Eucryphia nymansay on our lower deck. Sitting under this at the moment is a real buzz I can tell you – you really are at one with natures’ busy workers! If you would like to purchase one of these trees you would possibly have to order from the garden centre or go on line to see who is growing them – I am happy to do some follow up for you if needed. They do grow well in this area and they are frost hardy, don’t need too much attention, do need water and they are also evergreen. The dahlias and Canna lilies are also putting on a real show for

There are some superb varieties now available and some of the fully double and frilled flowers are simply luscious. We have inherited another vege garden from our neighbour which is a real thrill as it means we have more space to grow more yummy veges. Went a bit mad in the weekend and planted out around 100 plants between our two gardens so will probably have to have a stall at the gate when it’s all ready to harvest. It is a busy time in the veggie garden at present harvesting, mulching, replanting( I am even putting in some more dwarf beans as it is still nice and warm), pulling and preserving beetroot, and the tomatoes that were grown from both Beryl and Vince’s seed

• In the veggie garden keep planting lettuce, radish, beetroot, brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery and sow seeds of parsnip, carrots, and fennel. • Thin out fruit on apples, pears and citrus so the remaining fruits are approx 1015cms apart. This encourages more even sized fruit and also helps young trees establish more easily. • Make sure you clean up and dispose of (not into the compost), any diseased leaves, which have blackspot, blight or fungal conditions. Good garden hygiene is really important to maintain a healthy garden and you will not have to spray as often. • Use Derris dust on the brassica’s to deter the army of white butterflies that seem to have appeared overnight. Try to check the underside of the leaves and remove eggs as you see them. • Keep watering young seedlings and pots on a regular basis and also keep deadheading in the flower garden and weeding, weeding, weeding, as they are going to use up water that should be going to your precious plants. Remember – slip, slop, slap and a hat….

Welcome to February folks – not sure what happened to January but I am sure it was a great month!! I am pleased to report that the moths have finally been released from the bathers and they have been dipped into the briny (the bathers that is – not the moths…) for the first swim of the season. Even hot enough and the water warm enough to encourage Nonno to dip his toes in….amazing! We are so lucky to live in this beautiful place where to have a swim you only need to travel for a few minutes from any direction to enjoy one of the best beaches in the South Island. The dog beach is great for the furry ones also with lots of friends to greet and sticks to chase – Cruze could stay all day…. I always know that the hottest part of summer is here when I walk down the Railway Reserve and see the glorious flowers of the Eucalyptus ficifolia. What a great show they put on every season in a myriad of vibrant oranges, reds, and coral pinks - the bees just love them. Around my birthday each year we also have the beautiful flowers of the Eucryphia X nymansesis “Nymansay” and the smaller but still pretty Eucryphia lucida “Ballerina” that come into bloom. This year the Nymnsay is lit-

Falcons back to winning ways Phillip Rollo Mark Johnston is under no illusion – every game is now a must win. Despite beating Otago United 1-0, the New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Falcons are still trailing conference leaders Team Wellington, and with only one Southern Conference team qualifying through to the ASB Youth League final, the Falcons captain believes a win against Canterbury United this weekend is vital. "Yeah after the first round it was pretty obvious that it's going to be Canterbury, Wellington and us fighting for that top spot. We've had our one slip up for the season, against Wellington away, so we've just got to take care of business and treat every game like it's a cup final," he says. A second half goal to substitute Ashley Langbein kept Nelson's unbeaten record at home alive, but it was a game the side had to win if it entertained any thought of meeting the top Northern side next month. Canterbury is last year's league champion and were dominant for the majority of the match when it travelled up to Nelson in round one – only to concede two goals in the final five minutes. But Mark says the team has more self belief after winning two of its last three matches and that Canterbury should be worried. "We've got nothing to fear now. The boys had a little bit of apprehension in the first match but all that is gone. I know they have to play a catch up game midweek, which helps us out, and we're going to go there pretty confident. It's a good surface at ASB Park, so we have no excuses."

Substitute Ashley Langbein celebrates after scoring the only goal during Sunday's youth league win over Otago United. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Concerning for the Falcons will be the sight of young defender Harry Tod-Smith going off with a leg injury midway through the second half on Sunday. The Nelson College student is the third centre-back to start alongside his skipper and he's a player Mark rates as a future star. "He's really impressed me. He's only 16 years old and he's so mature. I certainly think he's got a big future ahead of him. When Dion [Keetley] came on that was the fourth [centre-back partner] I've had. But I think Harry will be the one, he just needs to get fit." Mark says everyone wrote the Falcons off before the start of the season and now that the league is at its halfway stage, teams will be more prepared. "That's an advantage for them so we're just going to have to lift to another level. We think we're heading in the right direction so that's a positive."

Tigers hunt teams title

The Nelson Tigers are hungry. The team hasn’t won the ENZED New Zealand Superstock Teams Championship since 2010, with the title residing in Palmerston North on a fulltime basis these days. But things could be set to change this weekend with the Nelson Tigers squad confirmed for the two-day championship featuring more notable omissions than inclusions, highlighting the club’s unbelievable depth. Although as selector Daryl Peterson points out, picking a team isn’t just about who has had the best season individually, it’s about who can perform a certain role to get the most points. “It’s not just about having five hot rods out there,” he says. “You've got to be able to

hockEY/AThlETicS: Nelson’s Anita Punt has long been touted as the fastest woman in international hockey. Now she’s after the title as fastest woman in the country. Anita won the 100m and 300m spirit races in Christchurch on Saturday and is now aiming to compete at the national championships in March. Her times of 12.61 sec and 39.6 sec were on the grass track so she could expect much quicker times on a proper track but says she will only have a week to train for the champs as she’s on duty with the Black Sticks in Argentina later this month.

adapt to different roles. A lot of people say ‘why don’t you pick this person?’ But it’s a team thing so we have to pick what works better for the team.” The team still includes a former 1NZ in the form of experienced campaigner Dale Ewers. “He’s really the backbone of the team these days and he’s the most experienced guy we’ve got.” Dale will be joined by Jared Gray, Brett Nicholls, Shane Harwood and Blair Cunningham – a group with plenty of experience in the teams arena. While the two-time defending champions Palmerston North Panthers will be hot favourites to win their third title in a row Daryl says you have to treat every race like it’s a final, because of the knock-out nature to the format on day two.

The fun starts the night before too with a drive in movie to be held on Friday night, along with a 1.5 hour cruise planned throughout Nelson.
