Sealord in Nelson for long haul

Local police officers earn top awards at pay parade Page 5

Andrew Board The loss of a coastal shipping service and a lack of fuel at Port Nelson is making it tougher for Sealord to do business in the region, but it says it remains committed to the city. Sealord’s Roy Dawson says it is not getting any easier for the international seafood company to keep its base in Nelson as it battles refueling problems and as ocean freight export services die off. Two weeks ago the cargo service from Nelson to Wellington was cancelled meaning Nelson businesses now need to send cargo through Picton. The Santa Regina’s weekly crossings were closed due to a lack of use. Sealord chief executive Graham Stuart spoke at a Nelson City Council forum in May around the challenges his company faces by operating out of a smaller port like Nelson. Roy backed up those comments to Nelson Weekly this week. “As an organisation we have concerns around getting enough fuel for our boats, there is a limited capacity and that has been a problem for us for 18 months to two years now, so that’s forced us at times to run our fleet differently than we would have liked.” Sealord has had to discharge vessels in other ports when it says it would have preferred to do it in Nelson. “We’ve even had to have vessels discharge in Nelson and go to Wellington and bunker there and go fishing after that, so that hasn’t been overly helpful, so there is definitely concerns around fuel,” he says.

Maria owns Eclectic on Hardy St and was the winner of the Nelson City Council and Nelson Weekly ‘dress up

your window’ promotion, run during the month of June. Fifty two businesses took part in the promotion, an incredible effort say organisers. Nelson mayor, and one of the judges for the competition, Aldo Miccio says the success of the promotion shows how much support there is for the World Cup coming to Nelson. “It’s fantastic to see all these local businesses getting in behind it. I’m blown

away really, that more than 50 entered shows Nelson is up for this event.” The promotion was launched with 100 days to go until the start of the cup. But its success has prompted organisers to push for businesses to re-dress their windows during the cup. “Most of the businesses will now have the decorations so will be able to put them back up when the visitors from
