Sealord in Nelson for long haul

Local police officers earn top awards at pay parade Page 5

Andrew Board The loss of a coastal shipping service and a lack of fuel at Port Nelson is making it tougher for Sealord to do business in the region, but it says it remains committed to the city. Sealord’s Roy Dawson says it is not getting any easier for the international seafood company to keep its base in Nelson as it battles refueling problems and as ocean freight export services die off. Two weeks ago the cargo service from Nelson to Wellington was cancelled meaning Nelson businesses now need to send cargo through Picton. The Santa Regina’s weekly crossings were closed due to a lack of use. Sealord chief executive Graham Stuart spoke at a Nelson City Council forum in May around the challenges his company faces by operating out of a smaller port like Nelson. Roy backed up those comments to Nelson Weekly this week. “As an organisation we have concerns around getting enough fuel for our boats, there is a limited capacity and that has been a problem for us for 18 months to two years now, so that’s forced us at times to run our fleet differently than we would have liked.” Sealord has had to discharge vessels in other ports when it says it would have preferred to do it in Nelson. “We’ve even had to have vessels discharge in Nelson and go to Wellington and bunker there and go fishing after that, so that hasn’t been overly helpful, so there is definitely concerns around fuel,” he says.

It’s been a blast, lets do it again Maria Henare says she was haunted by rugby as a youngster, with her brother and dad insisting on watching the games on television. But the chance to support the sport’s showpiece event, the Rugby World Cup, coming to town and the chance to win a $2000 advertising prize was too good for her to turn down. Maria owns Eclectic on Hardy St and was the winner of the Nelson City Council and Nelson Weekly ‘dress up

your window’ promotion, run during the month of June. Fifty two businesses took part in the promotion, an incredible effort say organisers. Nelson mayor, and one of the judges for the competition, Aldo Miccio says the success of the promotion shows how much support there is for the World Cup coming to Nelson. “It’s fantastic to see all these local businesses getting in behind it. I’m blown

away really, that more than 50 entered shows Nelson is up for this event.” The promotion was launched with 100 days to go until the start of the cup. But its success has prompted organisers to push for businesses to re-dress their windows during the cup. “Most of the businesses will now have the decorations so will be able to put them back up when the visitors from

Deadline looms for cameras in taxis NEWS IN BRIEF Nelson taxi companies are gearing up for a law change that will make it compulsory for every taxi to have a camera installed by the start of next month. Two of the region’s taxi companies are even congratulating the New Zealand Transport Authority for the move, which they say will increase safety and customer service. Sun City Taxis office manager Toby Page says the technology was initially said to be available for the protection of the drivers, but he says it will also be used to protect passengers. Nelson City Taxis say it installed its first lot of cameras in 2009 after a Christchurch taxi driver was killed and is keen to fit out the rest of its fleet says company director Vaughan Woodward. “We value our drivers safety highly so we wanted to do what we could to give them a safer environment.” CHECK IT OUT: Sun City Taxi’s company coordinator George Aker points to one of the All taxis must have the camera in- cameras that have recently been installed in the company’s taxis. It’s been a blast, lets do it again FROM PAGE 1 those countries are in town,” says Aldo. Nelson Weekly is also throwing its weight behind the initiative but instead of splitting the city into four quadrants, will encourage businesses to dress up their window to support whichever team they want, which is good news for Maria, who is already planning her New Zealandthemed window for the cup. “I’m definitely an All Blacks supporter so it has been hard having an Australian window, but I’m so happy I’ve won, it’s very exciting.” The judges of the competition – Aldo, Fashion Island manager Nicola Dolan and Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board – judged the windows late last week and were astounded at the lengths some businesses went to. “I was genuinely impressed,

the windows looked fantastic and there were so many of them,” says Nicola. Andrew says the competition was also a milestone for the newspaper. “We sometimes forget we are only ten months old. For a business so young we’ve been able to have a positive impact on the community, we were the only media outlet in Nelson that supported the competition and its success is a reflection on the amount of people reading our locally owned newspaper.” The runners up of the competition were House of Travel (Italy), TS Clothing (USA), Global Soap (Australia) and Nelson City Council (Russia). Each will receive a bottle of wine for their efforts. “Don’t put those decorations too far away,” says Aldo. “Let’s really get the town behind the four teams to play here during the cup, and of course the All Blacks.”

Nominations now open for WOW finalist’s inspiration runs deep the Good Neighbour Awards Andrew Board

The success of last year’s Good Neighbour Awards means it is back for 2011 and nominations for the region’s best neighbours are now open. The awards recognise the efforts of neighbours in four community constable areas – Nelson City, Victory, Stoke and Tahunanui. Organiser Kim MacDonald says the awards are a great opportunity to say thanks and help show how important great neighbours are. “Neighbours are often the people who are there for you when no one else is. Let us know what your neighbour has done and they might win a special prize for being such a good neighbour.” There will be a prize for each of the four areas. The awards are also supported and sponsered by Nelson Weekly. Last year’s four award winners were all profiled in the Weekly.

Kim says a good neighbour is someone who may have done an act of kindness, helped out in a crisis, made an effort to get to know new people in the street, share their interests with others in the street, offered their time or skills to help someone. “We have some amazing neighbours in Nelson and we would love to hear about yours,” says Kim. To enter your neighbour send Kim an email at nsupport@xtra. co.nz or post your entry to Neighbourhood Support, PO Box 2101, Stoke, Nelson 7041. Include their name and address and outline why the person is a Good Neighbour. If you have any photos please attach them to the email. Please also include your name. Winners and runner–ups will be invited to a special evening on Thursday 18 August.

The Property Managers

For 11 straight years Nelson’s Janet Bathgate hasn’t needed much incentive to enter the Brancott Estate World of WearableArt™ Awards Show. In 2011 though, her entire entry was driven by inspiration. Janet has entered a piece in WOW since 1997 and is a two-time winner of the Pacific section. But she says she had planned to have a year off until she went to visit a dear friend in Wellington. “I went to say goodbye, she was dying of breast cancer and she said: ‘Oh Janet, what are you going to put in the Wearable Arts this year’. I explained that I was taking a year off and she said ‘oh go on, I bet you could whip something up with the stuff that’s in your workroom’. We didn’t say anything more about it but a couple of days later she died and I thought: ‘oh, was that a challenge’.” So in a fortnight of creative energy and grief, Janet created her entry ‘Heart Beat’ from materials in her work space. Her inspiration for the piece in the Geni Creative Excellence Section: Under the Microscope was what breast cancer looks like under a microscope and a tribute to her friend and her life. Janet says she is proud of her effort. “Just being able to contribute and be a part of the show is the thrill for me, winning is not something I ever expect. I just enjoy CREATIVE SIDE: Nelson’s Janet Bathgate is a finalist in being able to add to the show.” the Gen-i Creative Excellence Section, Under the Micro- Thirteen Nelson artists have entered scope with her entry Heart Beat. Local police officers earn top awards at pay parade Sixteen local police officers took center stage last Friday, receiving awards at the annual Mid Year Pay Parade at the Nelson Fire Station. The parade saw the officers receive awards for bravery, long service and promotion. Deputy Commissioner Mike Bush, on his first visit to Nelson in the role, along with Superintendent Gary Knowles and mayors Aldo Miccio and Richard Kempthorne, presented the awards in front of officer’s family members. Mike told the officers that everyone in New Zealand has a right to feel safe and “our job is to make that right a reality” Earning a 14 year long service and good conduct medal were Senior Constable Reuben McCormack, Detective Patrick Nally and Detective Dennis Webster. Senior Constable Grant Heney earned the 21 year service clasp, while Derek Foffey the 21 year service badge and Senior Constable Peter Cobeldick the 28 year service clasp. Earning a district commander’s commendation for their role in securing the Tapawera shooting situation earlier this year were constables Kyle Bruning, Nicholas Kempthorne, Stuart Granger, Senior Constable Peter Cobeldick and Sergeant Blair Hall. Constable Andrew Nevin was awarded the same commendation for his part in arresting a man wielding and threatening a local with a broken bottle in a park. Inspector Ross Lienert was given a certificate of promotion, while Constable Rowan Strange, Senior Constable Brynn Olsen and Constable Terry Holland all passed various academic training.

Sealord in Nelson for long haul FROM PAGE 1

Roy says in the future Sealord could look at discharging ships away from Nelson, which would result in some work being lost to the Nelson area. “I think the thing to realise is that only one of our factories is fixed to the ground, the rest of them float. While the impact on the wider community would not be significant it would result in lost volume through the port.”

But despite the concerns, Roy says Sealord will not be going anywhere anytime soon. “Nelson’s a good place for us to be, we are relatively close to fishing grounds, its locality for the seafood business is good, there is no strong push to move the factory anywhere else. We like it here.” Port Nelson chief executive Martin Byrne says the loss of the weekly straight crossings to Wellington is a blow to the port but it wasn’t getting enough cargo to make it financially viable.

Winter music festival launch a sell out

Nelson hottest winter entertainment is just days away from launching to a sold out crowd at the historic Nelson School of Music. Ticket sales for the 17 concerts during the two week Nelson Winter Music Festival are going well says NSOM manager Frances McElhinney. “People are obviously looking for something to brighten up the winter and this is the perfect thing for it.” The festival kicks off this Saturday with Jennifer Ward-Lealand’s cabaret already sold out. Other concerts proving popular include opera singer Anna Leese and pianist Michael Endres, who will demonstrate his talent as one of the world’s foremost Schubert interpreters, on the new Sturgeon Steinway. Nelson parents and those planning a Top of the South holiday are reminded the festival has two children’s shows: Cinders is a twist on the Nelson Winter Muclassic fairy story, persic Festival manager formed by Nelson Youth Frances McElhinney. Theatre and The Bubbles and Mustard Show is a wacky radio tour from Phineas Phrog. The Nelson Winter Music Festival has received sponsorship from the Nelson Events Marketing and Development Programme, which is funded by the Nelson City Council. The programme’s objective is to stimulate Nelson city’s economy in the shoulder and off-peak season by bringing visitors to Nelson for events. TUESDAY 5 July 2011

Nelson city gets free car parking... on Tuesdays Nelson shoppers will enjoy free parking on Tuesdays throughout the rest of winter. The offer starts next Tuesday July 5 with the last day being September 6. The free parking day was approved by Nelson City Council as a result of a submission made to the Annual Plan by Uniquely Nelson, representing local businesses in the CBD. Mayor Aldo Miccio says council was keen to support

this initiative as a way to help stimulate business activity around central Nelson on what is traditionally a quiet day at a quiet time of year. The free parking on Tuesday initiative will be trialed this winter. Its success will be measured by feedback from businesses and the community. Although there will be no charge at the meters, shoppers need to be aware that current time limits of 1, 2 or 3 hours, depending

on where you park, still apply to discourage the parks being used for all day parking. Council’s parking wardens will still be enforcing the time limits, so people are reminded to check on the meter and parking signage to confirm how long they can stay. Any other parking and vehicle offences (such as WOF’s, registrations and safety issues) will continue to be enforced.

Cawthron joins technology voucher programme Cawthron Institute, New Zealand’s largest independent research organisation, says it’s recently announced accreditation as a research and development partner for the Ministry of Science and Innovation’s Technology Transfer Voucher programme is a significant acknowledgement of the institute’s potential to add value to New Zealand. Cawthron Institute CEO Gillian Wratt says they’re excited to join the programme as a provider.

“Cawthron Institute is about providing research-based solutions to real-world challenges, so this new connection to businesses is a natural fit for us.” The Technology Transfer Voucher programme was initiated by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MSI) last year. The coverage of the programme has now been extended to include support for businesses wanting to do agri-tech R&D projects. Eligible businesses can apply for a voucher which will pay half of the R&D costs with an accredited partner for an 100% locally owned and operated approved project. Cawthron Institute is the first non-government owned research organisation to Your week in a day be accredited for the programme.

We meet your needs, your way. The best care is care with a personal touch. It would certainly be easier providing a fixed set of care services to our residents, but we think it’s fairer if they only have to pay for the services they need. Which is why we do things differently. We tailor our care services to meet the requirements of an individual and we do so in a way that helps them stay independent for longer. It’s an approach that makes perfect sense to us and a world of difference to you. Why chose the Metlifecare way of doing things? You choose the care services you need. We care for you in your own home. Stay independent rather than dependent. We have friendly, professional staff.

Fire guys finish training on million dollar truck

diary

Nelson Fire fighters have now completed training on a $1million truck it received last year. The truck can be used as a mobile command centre and was recently used in response for the Christchurch earthquakes. Among the items on the bus is a brand new $100,000 decontamination tent which replaces a shower previously used by the service. Officer Craig Davies, right, finished training all Nelson staff last week, in time for the Rugby World Cup. The tent has four zones and means people suspected of being contaminated by chemicals can be safely cleaned in private. The tent can be erected and fully operational in just 10 minutes, says Craig. The bus is one of four in the South Island and its command centre can be used by police, fire or civil defence. Assistant area manager Tim Bennion says the tent and bus means Nelson has the latest equipment to deal with contamination and search and rescue missions. Photo: Andrew Board.

Winter weather should be normal, says NIWA Nelson temperatures are likely to be in the above average range for winter, according to NIWA. Seasonal rainfall and soil moisture levels are likely to be in the near normal range, while river flows are likely to be in the normal or below normal range, according to the national weather agency.

• A quieter week last week with better weather as well. Three general or container vessels including the last trip for the Santa Regina. The tanker Torea, and the fruit ship Haru Verdy departed. Ten large fishing vessels moved into or around the port and the car carrier Mosel Ace arrived in perfect conditions on Friday. • The barge Pukatea from Picton serviced or replaced 40 plus moorings around the Port all of which are now clearly visible throughout the tides. These new moorings are individually owned and it would pay the operators to read and understand the role of the harbourmaster in relation to these moorings. In essence if the moorings are overloaded, if they are left vacant for an extended period, more than six months, or if they become a hazard to navigation the harbourmaster can recommend they be removed. The new and improved moorings are a welcome upgrade to the safety of the vessels and the port. • I was lucky enough to come across a paddle boarder on one of the beautiful calm sunny days last week and saw that he had with him a buoyancy vest should he happen to fall in. Well done. Paddle boarding is expected to become a new trend in these waters and I do encourage you all to ensure you have a leg rope to your board and some form of buoyancy with you. I will be working with you to find a simple buoyancy aid to help ensure your safety. • If you paddle a kayak, skiff, or waka you must have a buoyancy aide or an escort vessel capable of providing immediate assistance Watch the weather as the water is cold at this time of year. If in doubt – don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

BATTERY POWERED: Burtram Newcombe, of Tahunanui, with his battery-powered bike that helps him get to work in Nelson. Photo: Andrew Board.

Battery bike gives riders a boost

When Burtram Newcombe’s doctor took his drivers license off him for health reasons, the 23 year-old epileptic suddenly had to find a new way to work. He caught the bus, but a ride from Tahunanui to work in Nelson and back five times a week cost him as much as it did to fill his old scooter. He urged friends to give him a lift, but that only goes so far. And cycling could be taxing and timely. Then Burt found an electric bike and it has changed his life, he says. The bikes are gaining in popularity around the world and here in Nelson, says New Zealand importer Jace Hobbs. He says there are several dozen bikes currently in Nelson and while the concept isn’t new, the design and battery power is. Electric bikes is like riding a tandem with Lance Armstrong. As you cycle along, the battery kicks

in and riders control the speed with a throttle like a motorcycle. The bikes are not classed as mopeds and can be charged overnight. Which means Burt can ride his bike to work and hardly get a sweat up. “It’s really cool, I get a lot of questions about it because it goes pretty quick.” But it isn’t just Burt that is finding favour with the electric bikes. Jace says a fair chunk of the bikes owners are older people who like riding their bikes but just don’t have the strength they used to, or people who live up steep hills. “I know of several people who want to ride to work and will go the whole way without using the battery but just to get up the steep hills on the way home let it kick in and away it goes.” Jace says the bikes will only get more popular as the designs and longevity of the batteries improve. Every day, huge amounts of plastic food wrap is used once and then thrown away, which is environmentally damaging, as it is toxic and non-biodegradable. 4MyEarth provides an environmentally friendly alternative to wrapping your food which is convenient, stylish and eco friendly. Products available include sandwich wraps, pockets, snack wraps and other handy, super cute and practical products. Marcia McWhirter is the proud owner of 4MyEarthNZ, which began when she was searching for alternatives to plastic Marcia McWhirter wrap for her daughter’s school lunches. “We worked out a child would use 105 meters of plastic wrap a year based on a sandwich, muffin and nuts/sultanas in their lunch bag each day. Times this by a small school of 450 students and it comes to a massive 47,250 meters of plastic wrap being dumped into our ever increasing landfill. My daughter hasn’t taken rubbish to school (or preschool Montessori) since I first started 4MyEarthNZ over two years ago.” The innovative and colourful products include organic materials and are light weight, yet very strong, food safe, washable and can be used again and again making them an affordable substitute to plastic wrap, and is also fun to use. 4MyEarth’s range has been specifically designed for home packed food. The products are being used by everyone from school children and office workers to builders and trampers. See the website for reviews and media coverage.

Seventy five per cent of the planet is water. Can you swim? Keta Everett moved to New Zealand from England eight years ago and is a specialist when it comes to making sure your children can swim. Keta worked as a Swim school coordinator in Wellington when she first moved to New Zealand, before moving to Nelson to start a business. She sold the business two years ago and got back into instructing at ASB Aquatic Centre and jumped at the chance to move across to Riverside Pool to manage its Keta Everett swim school. “It’s something I could get my teeth into, from a business and teaching perspective and I’m really enjoying the role.” Keta’s aim is to continue to improve and grow the swim school and customer satisfaction and providing the best quality teaching, and value for money is paramount she says. “I find the job rewarding and satisfying. Often we take whole families through the programme and it’s great to see them come back and be confident swimmers.” Keta is a qualified gym instructor and used to run exercise classes in the UK including training some of the English rugby team. She says she encourages mums with babies from six months old to join the Magic Moments programme. “Babies are not born with a fear of water, and it is better to introduce them earlier rather than later.” To find out more about the SwimMagic swimming lessons call Riverside Pool on 546 3221.

Snippets of History NILE & VANGUARD STREETS

Early in 1842 a committee of young male settlers met several times to decide on Nelson’s street names, especially those to celebrate Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victories at sea. Those victories were crucial in freeing up British trade and immigration policies for the next hundred years, so immigrants to New Zealand were well aware of their importance and Nelson’s leadership. In 1798 in his flagship, HMS Vanguard, inflicted a massive defeat on a French fleet in the Battle

of the Nile. As a result he was created Baron Nelson of the Nile. He was given a pension of £2000 a year and a grateful East India Co. voted him a massive £10,000. Nile and Vanguard Streets commemorate that notable battle. To read more Snippets of History, purchase your copy of both volumes from Marsden House for $15 each. ON THE SMALL SCREEN: Nelson College first XV vice captain Nathan Baxter and captain Mitchell Drummond will have their team’s Press Cup clash with Timaru Boys High School televised live on the Rugby Channel this weekend. Nelson College will be hoping for a big crowd come Saturday’s 2:30pm kickoff, with college old boys encouraged to attend the fixture. Nelson College defeated Roncalli High School 29-6 on the weekend and Nathan says there will be some added pressure performing in front of a nationwide audience. “If you make a mistake in the game it’s not bad, but there will be lots of pressure if you make a mistake on TV,” he says. The Rugby Channel is on channel 37 on Sky television. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Richmond netballers sink Stoke Stoke’s wing defence, Mackenzie Archibald was industrious through court as she toiled to link the offensive third. She continued with her hefty work load when she moved to goal attack for the middle two quarters. Mid courters, Kat Soper and Tessa Hancock gained some good ball and worked hard to deliver quality ball to their shooters, however they struggled to find their target. It was goal keep Lea Hart who created the turnover ball in the defensive circle – pulling in eight well timed intercepts. Goal defender Ness Whyte also had a couple of intercepts against her name. In a Grade 3 encounter, Waimea College 10A accounted for Prices Pharmacy B 38–29. Although Waimea lead throughout, Prices did come within a solitary goal in the third quarter. To its credit, the college girls regained their composure to pull away on the back of some superb shooting by Shaun Aindow and Courtney Zwart. Prices shooters, Jessie Hart and Rebecca Dudley could be well pleased with their efforts, returning with just over an 80 per cent average. Stoke Richards Woodhouse found the going tough when they met Richmond Wakatu Hotel B in the Grade 2 game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. It was Richmond’s superior conversion rate which paved the way for the 33–21 win, which in turn enabled them to retain the top of the table. Goal shoot, Jenelle Strickland’s radar was well and truly tuned in as she did not miss a shot until the final quarter, returning the commendable statistics of 20 from 22. Jenelle was well supported by goal attack, Melissa Marfell who worked the circle well to convert 12 from 14.

GREEN MACHINE: Wakatu Marist first five-eighth James Proctor breaks through the tackle of Galbraith Group Nelson number eight Jake Cooley in the Car Company division one final on Saturday. James gained Tasman Makos selection after the 21-18 victory. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Marist edge Nelson for local supremacy It was a busy weekend for six of Marist’s top players. Wakatu Marist overcame Galbraith Group Nelson 21-18, on Saturday, to take the Car Company division one championship title, one day before six of its players were selected in the Tasman Mako’s 2011 ITM Cup squad. Marist laid their hands on Nelson’s premier rugby trophy for the first time since 2007, after an exciting grand finale at Trafalgar Park. An early first half try to Mark Bright gave the green machine the lead early before slipping behind at the break when Robbie Malneek scored twice in a high-quality match. When Marist were behind though, the forwards, including man of the match Liam Squire, got the upper hand. Goal kicking was the difference in a match where both sides had plenty of opportunities to score. James Proctor stepped up and landed the killer blows, despite lacking his usual accuracy. He kicked three second half penalties to seal the emotional win, following the recent death of Carl Thornalley. Carl is the son of former Marist club coach,

Brian, and the brother of Brett, a former Marist player and currently part of the Tasman Makos management team. Matt Muollo scored Marist’s other try, while Nelson’s goal kicker Andrew Goodman landed two penalties and a conversion. James, the competition’s top point scorer with 215 points, was selected alongside Tasman regulars Francis Smith, Lucky Mulipola, the returning Mark and fellow newcomers Kieron Fonotia and Liam, as the Marist contribution to the provincial squad. The naming of the squad followed a 45-19 defeat to a full strength Otago Razorbacks side on Sunday. Crusaders lock Chris Jack and Highlanders winger Kade Poki were two key omissions from the Tasman squad, but with one spot remaining in the back division, the region is hoping that Kade will resist offers from Otago and Southland and stay with the region. As well as the Marist trio, Mitchell Scott, Riki Hoeta, James Hadfield and Chilean international Pablo Huete are also new faces in the squad.

Local badminton players off to nationals Two Nelson badminton teams are on the way to nationals. Nelson under-15 and under-17 players are heading to Palmerston North in the July holidays to try and take the national title. Coach Cassie Marwick says the teams are looking forward to the competition and is expecting them to place “middle of the range” as the North Island teams usually put up a tough battle.
