It’s been a busy week for the new owners of Natureland Mike Rutledge and Meg Selby, who officially took over the business last Friday. The duo hit the ground running after arriving in town from Auckland last week and got straight into their first day of zookeeping on Friday. Mike, who has a marketing background and Meg, a zoologist, brought the facility back from the brink of extinction after taking over ownership from the

Dog lovers take protest to court A planned protest aimed to pressure Nelson City Council into giving back two dogs seized after a mayoral candidate was bitten has been postponed. During the campaign for the local body elections, mayoral and council candidate Brian McGurk says he was bitten on the hand and leg while doorknocking in Tahunanui. He says there were three dogs on a property he visited and he was bitten twice. The former area commander for Nelson Bays Police reported the attack and two days after the election the owners of the dogs were notified and told their puppy, named Paris, would be seized. Leah McQuillan, one of the dog’s owners then hid the pup but her partner’s two other dogs were seized last week, leaving them distraught and upset with the actions of the council. The protest was planned for this Thursday but was pulled late yesterday after the organiser of the event, Shawnee Burford-

Young, had a conversation with the chief executive of Nelson City Council, which has the dogs impounded. Shawnee says the protest against the seizure of two dogs will still go ahead but will now be done in front of Nelson District Court when the owners of the seized dogs will appear. Brian – who failed in his mayoral bid but was voted on council as the highest polling candidate – says the attack left him shaken and upset. But the neighbour of the dog owners says that is rubbish. Stu Reid says Brian knocked on his door straight after the attack and appeared in good spirits. “I was home sick and answered the door, he said ‘hi, I’m Brian McGurk and I’m running for mayor, I’d shake your hand but I’ve just been bitten by a dog’.

It’s all a bit strange.” But Nelson City Council says anger directed towards it is misplaced and it is responsible for implementing the Dog Control Act. “We take our responsibility seriously and realise

the issue is upsetting to some in the community. Our obligation is to act on behalf of the entire community, and we are doing this with care,” says Angela Ricker, of NCC. She says the dog attack was reported to the council in early September and – following the law – it investigated the complaint and decided to proceed with the prosecution, which is likely to mean the dogs will be put down. “There is zero tolerance for dog attacks and dogs need to be under control at all times including on the properties where they live.” Shawnee says plans for the protest will be made public when a hearing for the dog owners is set, she was unsure when that may be.

Orana Wildlife Trust. After arriving in Nelson from Auckland just last Sunday, Mike says they were keen to get the ball rolling and got straight into it. “We just got stuck into it. We’ve met all of the staff, they are a great team and we’re really, really lucky to have them. Then it was just very much learning how everything runs and Meg was straight into keeping.” Meg says a day in the life of owning Natureland will be “all hands on deck”.

“Whatever needs doing, we need to be able to do all parts of the job. It’s a great opportunity to get to work with a wide variety of animals which is really exciting. I’m particularly fond of the kea and the tuatara, the native species but there are a lot of really exciting animals here.” Mike says seeing the reaction of visitors, they know they are onto a good thing. “It’s brilliant when you see people being able to interact with these animals, just big smiles on faces, having a great time.”

Section shortage puts pressure on new homes Simon Bloomberg

A shortage of suitable sections is creating a “bottleneck” for new houses and forcing up the price of land around the region according to three of the region’s biggest home builders. The Nelson franchises of GJ Gardner Homes, Jennian Homes and Milestone Homes build around 100 new houses each year but all three businesses are predicting a bleak short-term outlook. It comes just weeks after Nelson and Tasman were confirmed as the two fastest growing region’s in the South Island. GJ Gardner’s Nelson franchise sales manager Glen Jarvie says the problem is that “developers have not progressed developments over the last two years” and now sections were in high demand. Although there are a number of sections available Glen says many of them are not suitable because they are difficult to build on. “We are still building flat out now but that will slow down soon,” Glen says. “There is a real bottleneck coming because there is no flat land - we could see it coming six months ago and now it’s coming home

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Extra staff will be on deck but police say they have no reason to believe any trouble will come from this weekend’s V South Island 4 and Rotary Champs – in fact they are looking at the positives it will have. Thousands of “car enthusiasts” from all around the South Island are set to descend on Nelson for New Zealand’s longest standing automotive and lifestyle event. The two day schedule includes a drag race at the Motueka Dragway on Saturday and a show and shine display at the Trafalgar Centre on Sunday. It is the first time it has come to the region after 10 years in Christchurch. But while organisers are expecting 6000 people to attend the first event, police say it will be treated just like any other big event. “Extra staff will be rostered on to prepare for the influx but we’re not concerned. We want people to come here and have a good time,” says senior sergeant Grant Andrews. “We’re not expecting any major problems and we’ll police it like we do any other event. It’s just a standard operation.” Event promoter Azhar Bhamji believed similar motorsport events carried an incorrect negative perception by some members of the public, but the 4 and Rotary was intended to be positive, enter-

We also notify police and locals about the event. Simply, people know that if they play up it brings us all down.” He also hopes it can be a big success in Nelson, having been taken out of Christchurch due to the earthquake. “For the last two years we have tried going back to Christchurch, however the competitor numbers were low. We do not want to go backwards as the scene of the car enthusiasts at our events were very strong.” Police praised the decision to include a drag racing event on the Saturday as it

Azhar echoed his comments too. “We have given away so many free passes for the drag racing as just that; take your steam out at the drags in a safe and controlled environment. Over 60 racers from imports, V8s, bikes etc have entered and it’s shaping up to be a good event for all.” To win tickets to the drag racing or the show and shine, email “Win 4 and Rotary tickets” and your details to editorial@nel sonweekly.co.nz.

Power bill must be paid back in full Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz but explained to Contact over the phone that the amount they want weekly, $114 per week inclusive of current power charges, or $104 per week on its own, is more than half of his income. “I’d happily pay any amount per week if I had a job at the moment but I don’t. The whole process has been frustrating. Since I accepted partial responsibility they’ve treated me like I’ve taken full ownership of the bill and seem to have forgotten that part they played in it too.” Tavis says he’s disappointed that Contact aren’t budging on the payment amount, even suggesting he try to delve into his Kiwisaver funds and claim financial hardship. “I wish they would show a bit of leniency considering they have made a mistake too. I said to them ‘you’ve let this build up for five years and now you expect me to pay it back in 48 weeks?’ The woman mentioned something about me being a liability to them. How can I be a liability with such an obscure amount when they are making millions in profit every year?” Tavis is hoping to talk Contact around and plans to pay it off in larger chunks when he has available funds. “It is stressful as I don’t have the means to pay it. It will literally leave me nothing to live on, basically I am stuck. I really want to challenge it but I don’t want a bad credit history.”

A local man is still being asked to pay an outstanding power bill that snowballed into thousands of dollars over the last five years with no one noticing. Nelson man Tavis De Smit currently rents a Beatson Rd shed and has done so since 2008. He was never asked to contribute to a power bill and has since been stung with a backdated bill by Contact Energy. Despite failing to notice the bill, Tavis says Contact have been anything but sympathetic with him and he’s now worried about how he is going to pay it back in the timeframe they are asking for. The shed he rents is one of three in the same building and all are connected to the same power source. He says he assumed the powerbill was covered by other tenants because power was running when he first rented it and he never received a power bill or was approached to pay. Since Nelson Weekly reported the skyrocketing bill of $4952.79, Tavis says he’s been inundated with support and feedback. “The majority of people that have approached me think there should be no way in hell I should be paying it back. A few have suggested I go to the small claims court to try and get the costs incurred through other tenants and some think I should just get on and pay it.” Tavis who is currently unemployed following the closure of the business he worked for says he has accepted that he needs to pay at least a share of the money owed

SPCA opens it doors to public The Nelson SPCA got its appeal week off to the perfect start, raising $2000 from its annual open day. The facility on Waimea Rd was packed full of people all day Saturday with hundreds coming through to see animals, adopt animals and take part in the entertainment on offer. Summer Marvin of the SPCA says the turnout was really good for the event which always coincides with the beginning of their appeal week. “We just want to raise some awareness in the community.”

Nelson cadets are national champions When the Nelson Cadet Unit returned home from the South Island championships last month they were determined not to be too content. The job wasn’t finished. They can now relax though after bringing home the national title for the third time in four years and solidifying their reputation as the country’s best unit. Unit commander Tim Hoffman says the group won seven of the 11 stands at nationals at the Burnham Miltary Camp, outside of Christchurch. Of the four stands – or challenges – they didn’t win, Nelson finished runner up in each of them, destroying the top units from the northern and central zones. He says the Nelson unit, featuring nine of the unit’s 35 members, was determined to win and worked extremely hard in the build up to nationals. “They were training two nights a week and really pushing themselves. They know they are good and they wanted to prove it.” He says the unit promotes competition amongst the group and that helps bring out the best in the cadets.

Nelson nurse caused ‘significant risk’ to public A Nelson nurse who failed to tell a doctor about a patient who had a “funny feeling” in her chest has been disciplined for professional misconduct. The New Zealand Herald reported that the New Zealand Health Practitioners

Disciplinary Tribunal found Nelson rheumatology nurse Nano Christina Tunnicliff failed to document appropriate clinical consultation records of 87 patients over a two-year period. In April last year she also failed to tell a

doctor a patient had a “funny feeling” in her chest and pain in her hand. The investigating committee said Ms Tunnicliff ’s misconduct was “very serious” and caused “significant risk to the public” while working in Nelson.

Ms Tunnicliff, who worked for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board during the period for which she was investigated, was suspended from nursing for nine months and must work supervised for three years after resuming practice.

Raffle tickets being snapped up for charity Mini The Mini has finally been built, but the hard work is just beginning for the group of Wakefield men behind the restoration fundraiser. Five men – Bob Croy, Colin Ryder, Dal Stewart, Martin Reid and John Bruce – decided to restore a 1975 Morris Mini so it could eventually be raffled off for charity, with all the money going to the Nelson Cancer Society. The five, who are all friends, came up with the idea having attended the Relay for Life, wanting to raise a record amount. A host of local businesses came on board to support the project, including Bowater Motor Group who donated all of the parts needed in the rebuild. Sponsors and supporters were given a first glimpse of the complete Mini on Thursday night, but Bob says the restoration was just one step in the journey. The group would now be busy taking the Mini around various

events hoping to raise $20,000 in raffle sales. “The Mini was just completed on Monday,” Bob explains. “But we’re just one step of the way. We’ve got another three months solid selling tickets, well unless we sell them before that.” Bob was thrilled with how the Mini had turned out, pointing out its eye-catching yellow colour. “It’s amazing. Absolutely amazing.” Interest in the project has been hugely positive already. Tickets can be bought in person from the men at community events or by visiting www.countrytrading. co.nz where a Mapua women has bought 5000 tickets and is selling them on there. “She’s sold 300odd already but we’re hoping to sell 20,000 overall but that’s all we are allowed to sell. We will have the car everywhere. It was at the Tapawera Show on Saturday. We’ve got it booked into all sorts of places.”

Fire boss leaves service after 26 years

Remembering WWI soldiers Upgrade for historic entrance Next year marks 100 years since the start of World War I but the focus this weekend is about celebrating the end of the “Great War”. World War I started in August 1914 and there are several local projects planned to commemorate Nelson’s involvement in the war. While those projects are due to start next year, regional RSA president Derek Nees says this Sunday the focus is on Armistice Day, the day that officially marked the end of World War I in 1918. “It was the end of the killing for that war. It was horrendous the number of people that went from here and then you have a look at the names on the memorial and how many didn’t come back, it’s a lot of Nelsonians. And the memorials are in every little town in the region and the country.” The ceremony – which is also dubbed Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom – will be held in Nelson at 11am on November 10 at Anzac Park. The commemoration will also feature the Nelson City Brass Band, Dean Nick Kirk of Nelson Cathedral, and guest speaker Commander Phil McBride of the Royal New Zealand Navy and a former Nelson man. Derek says Armistic Day commemorations are always held in Nelson on the Sunday closest to November 11, when the armistice was signed at the 11th hour on the 11th day on the 11th month.

Work on earthquake strengthening the historic entrance to Riverside Pool began yesterday. The frontage façade of the pool was closed earlier this year when it was discovered to be earthquake-prone. Access to the pool wasn’t affected with a side door used as a main entrance. Nelson City Council, which owns the building, says the pool will remain open as usual during the upgrade, which is expected to take four months to complete. “Disruption to pool and gym users will be minimal as the work site will be fenced off for the duration of the project. “However some extra noise is likely at times. The temporary entrance at the side of the building will remain in use until the upgrade project is finished in March next

year,” says the council’s communications manager Angela Ricker. The seismic strengthening work will be internal so the brick façade of the old building will look the same but will be brought up to current building standards. Once finished the new entry to the pool will be more spacious and open plan. At the same time, other aspects of the council owned building will be updated including fire safety requirements.

Police Waimea Village sale ‘on track’ report

with Area Commander

Steve Greally

In June this year police in Nelson were connected to a new national Crime Reporting Line or CRL. CRL manages non-urgent calls to police, such as people reporting an historic incident - for example damage to your letterbox that has happened overnight which you discover in the morning, or an incident that will require paperwork for an insurance claim. The CRL call taker will gather all of the required information and that will immediately be available electronically to staff at the local police station. Local Police will then prioritise their response to your call around other events they are dealing with if it requires attendance. What to do: In an emergency always call 111. If you believe offenders are on your property or have just left call 111. If you see someone committing a crime, call 111 immediately - don’t wait until you get home. For non-emergency matters for which you would normally have called your local police station, continue doing what you have always done. If that call is to report a historic crime or another incident that does not require immediate police attendance you will be connected to a CRL call taker who will gather all of the information. You will then be contacted by your local police to arrange follow up if required. Why use CRL CRL has been introduced to reduce the amount of time police officers spend doing paper work and taking reports of historic or minor incidents. Those officers are freed up to attend urgent jobs and to be out on the street doing crime prevention work. Just because your information is taken by a CRL call taker does not mean police will not visit you. The CRL service also means that you won’t have to go down to the police station to report something or fill in forms. Instead you can do it all over the phone. However, if you would prefer to go to your local police station and speak with someone you can still do so during normal business hours. This process is still relatively new and we are keen to ensure it enables police to provide the best service we can to the community. I always welcome your feedback on the service you receive.

The sale of Waimea Village from its current owners to the residents is “on track” to go unconditional today. Former Richmond councillor Kit Maling helped stitch together a deal to buy the village on behalf of the residents before they could take control. After completing due diligence the deal was due to go unconditional on Friday but was extended until today due to some “minor changes” to the way it would be bought says Kit. He was confident the sale would go ahead despite the delay. The deal would end almost three years

of bitter dispute between the owners, Michael and Carolyn Wright, and the residents over massive lease increases. Under the purchase proposal, residents are able to buy a 172nd share of the village, one share for each home. So far more than 140 home owners have agreed to buy a share with the remainder to stay on as lease holders. The village would be run by a board of five, all elected by the villagers but three of those from outside the village. A part time manager will be employed under the proposal. Kit says the process hasn’t been easy and

a lot of hours have been dedicated to the sale, from accountants, lawyers and by himself. He says the sale is the only solution to the on-going trouble in the village though. Kit hosted a meeting at the village last week and he says support for the deal is still extremely high. “They understand it’s taken a lot of work but they also understand how much it will mean to them and their neighbours. We need to finish this.” If the purchase goes unconditional today as expected the sale will be completed on November 19.

Subantarctic adventure for student An environmentally friendly student will set sail on the trip of a lifetime in February next year. Nayland College student Mitchell Chandler has secured a spot on a subantarctic expedition to the Auckland Islands, where he will join a team of scientists planning a new world-leading climate change research station. Mitchell will join 11 other students from around the country that have been specifically chosen by The Sir Peter Blake Trust to go on the Young Blake Expedition and says being able to witness some of the world's leading scientists measuring how biodiversity is affected by climate change firsthand will be an extremely valuable experience. Mitchell will accompany a team of environmental scientiests to the region, which has been identified as critical for studying the effects of climate change. "I am really interested in sealife, marine life and waterways, which makes it all the more exciting to head to the subantarctic. It’s just crazy the amount of biodiversity that’s down there."

Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz

While seeing the wildlife will be a major highlight, Mitchell says having to live and stay on a navy ship for an extended period of time will be one of the more challenging aspects of the voyage. "It's all part of the experience though." After being chosen for the expedition, Mitchell wants to encourage others to follow their passions. “Don’t be afraid of taking opportunities or standing out and being different because that’s how you better yourself. Lots of people are scared of being different. Don’t be afraid, if you are interested in something go for it, you never know where it will take you." As part of preparation for the expedition, Mitchell needs to raise $500 to go towards the costs and is planning a movie night featuring environmental films and footage of Sir Peter Blake. “It’s fundraising but it’s more than that, it is also about awareness and encouraging others to be aware of

Making up the crew will be rep-

resentatives from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric (NIWA) and the Department of Conservation. The group will spend eight days at sea, with

up to five days on the Auckland Islands. Mitchell will leave from Auckland on February 10 and return from Bluff towards the end of the month.

FREE PARKING

It has been anything but baby steps for new local charity Walk With Us who experienced a full house for their first ever fundraising event last Tuesday evening. The organisation packed out the Waimea Old Boys Clubrooms with more than 200 people who all put their hands up to bid on locally donated items in the name of charity. Walk With Us is a charity focussed on putting school and sports shoes on the feet of kids who may not have them otherwise and is already receiving support from local schools who have jumped onboard the pilot programme. Spokesperson for the trust Carol Shirley says they were blown away by the support they received on the night raising $15,000, that will kick start the donation of shoes for needy kids. “We were really amazed at the support and thank all of the people who donated or purchased items on the night.” Motorcycle rides donated by Route 6 were among the most popular of items. While only three were initially up for auction, they were so in Aly Walker, associate member of charity Walk With Us on the demand that eight rides were Harley Davidson that put auction goers in a bidding frenzy purchased, securing the charity for a chance to ride it last Tuesday night. Living with diabetes for 50 years

A Nelson diabetic for more than 50 years says she has controlled it by sticking to a strict diet after watching her mother suffer as an “insulin guinea pig”. Winnith Rodley was told she was a diabetic when she was in her late 30s and decided to control it with a “plan” diet and plenty of exercise. But she also had a caution for young people who may be diabetics without knowing it: get it checked and make some changes. Her mother was a bad diabetic and was a “guinea pig” for insulin injections to control it in the 1930s. She says her mother spent a lot of time in hospital with the illness, including a six month stretch when Winnith was just 11. She remembers when her mother was first diagnosed. “It was about 1929 and I’ve never forgotten coming home from school one day and mum was lying on the bed and she said ‘have a look under my foot, I can’t see under my little toe’ and I’ve never forgotten the words I said: ‘poo, it stinks’. It was gangrene and it those days it was very new.” Her mother spent the next few years taking multiple shots of insulin every day to try and control it. Winnith was determined not to go through the same thing. “I was more determined to not go through that. I was a beautiful cook and everyone used to say ‘why don’t’ you go to the show, you’d clean up all the prizes

She says diabetes hasn’t changed her life that much. “I might have gone out to a lot more meals but I prefer my own cooking. But

I do go naughty sometimes and eat what I shouldn’t,” she says. Next week is Diabetes Awareness Week and Bee Williamson of Nelson Bays Primary Health says there are a few activities planned, including a walking competition, a Big Diabetes Day Out on Sunday November 17 at the Hope Domain. Nelson Cathedral and the Trafalgar Bridge will be lit blue as part of the awareness campaign. Organisers are also encouraging more people to have heart and diabetes checks. Wartime dance to help next year's Blitz Experience Lest we Forget is one of the Anzac Day highlights with local performers acting out a wartime scene at Founders Park and this weekend is your chance to help them prepare for the next show. Dramatix, the group behind the show, are hosting a wartime dance this Saturday at the Old St

John’s Hall on Hardy St. Money raised from the dance will be invested back into the performance which sees hundreds of people come along each year. This year’s performance was called the “Blitz Experience” where people could get a feel of how it was to live in wartime London.

This Saturday’s event aims to recreate a more pleasant side of life at that time and organiser Tracey Ramsay is encouraging people to turn up in costume and ready to party. “There will be music, a bar, dancing and live entertainment. It will be a really fun night.” Tickets are $10 at the door.

The Acceleration on Water Festival of Speed Tour splashes off with a two day regatta this weekend. The Lake Rotoiti Power Boat Club is proud to host one of the very first events of the racing season, the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta. The event is a big one and is back due to popular demand from both racers and spectators. The action starts next weekend, on November 9 and 10, ahead of many other major events on the national calendar, which will encourage a great turnout of racers. This will be the first round of Formula 1 racing for the season. Usually the event would be held in the New Year, but with a lot of big races coming up in the North Island it has been shifted to an earlier date. This should make the event all the more exciting, with a lot of boats still being tweaked ahead of the season. Because many of the drivers and their maintenance teams will be trying new things and perfecting their boats for the competition season, there will be a lot of action out on the water. A line up of ten Formula one tunnels are expected with several new boats and drivers. Julian Stillwell, current Formula 1 NZ Champion following last season’s NZ Nationals is one local driver who can’t wait to get back out on the water. “I’m definitely excited to get back out there. As drivers we’ve been waiting all winter to kick things off. This is the first round of five for the F1 tour so it’s going to be interesting. I’m hoping to pick things up where we left them last season as we were in a very good position.” Julian, whose major sponsor is Scott Construction will also receive a lot of support and more sponsorship from Nelson ITM. “I’m really looking forward

Many of the competitors have been testing their boats prior to the event and are keen

Island, some even as far have over thirty five ent expecting a few more to weekend as well.” Denise says the club i event an annual fixture, held in 2010. “The Lake

We think it will be an asset to the race calendar for the Rotoiti Club to host this every year.” Spectators will be in for a treat, with a wide variety of racing happening over the weekend. The Clubman class which is a new class for the sport

will be a big attraction and of course the action packed racing between the Formula One Tunnels is not to be missed. With the 2014 International Grand Prix Hydroplane Series coming to New Zealand in February and March the Grand Prix Hydroplanes will also be out in force taking the opportunity to get their 2500hp machines race ready International Series

“The first round of the NZ Formula One Tour will be a great spectacle, the Arthur McCaa Memorial and the Pelorus Jack trophy will feature the 2500hp, capable of reaching 280km, Grand Prix Hydroplanes.” The format of one heat of each race and a beach start means that spectators can visit the Lake for a few hours and catch a heat for each class in quick succession. The event will be family friendly too as the Department of Conservation and Fish and Game have a range of entertainment and activities planned for children, including a treasure hunt and guided walks. “People will also have a chance to get up close and personal with the three litre modified hyrdroplanes. They’ll be able to check out the boats, meet the drivers and the teams.” Lake Rotoiti Power Boat Club president Andy Morris says he is thrilled to be hosting the first regatta of the season and is looking forward to seeing some friendly rivalry out on the water. “The Formula 1 racing will be amazing to watch, as will the new Clubman Class. That class is really entry level, where anyone can have a go so it’s great to have that incorporated alongside the other big classes.” Head out to Lake Rotoiti this weekend and get amongst the action. Check out the power boats, enjoy the family friendly atmosphere and support the local drivers on their first race event of the season. Bring a picnic or purchase food at the event. Racing kicks off on Saturday and Sunday at 11am, finishing at 4pm. This is an all ages event, tickets just $10. Kids under 12 years old get to watch for free.

Have a theme Like them or loathe them, there’s no doubt that themed parties have a big part to play in giving an event some oomph. Costumes might be cringeworthy for some, but can also be a great talking point and will take party attendees out of themselves enough to make them feel like they’re not still at work. The best party themes are those that don’t require an enormously expensive and complex costume – hat parties and wig parties are a great way to make people feel involved without feeling stupid, or why not go to Smugglers and make it a themed pirate party.

Organised medieval banqueting, house of horror, or vintage parties can be a good idea if you pick the right venue, but be warned that this kind of obligatory joining in can make people feel excluded and some just won’t come. Make it an activity party If you’re tired of the same drinks and nibbles affairs that start with discomfort and end with lots of public drunkenness then why not shift the attention of partygoers from the bar to somewhere else this year. Segways are great fun and a way to engage smaller groups and explore Nelson at the same time. Or opt for something like golf or Pro Karts which involves team participation Here are some games to play to make your Christmas function that little bit more interesting. • Re-write Christmas tunes with your own words, then sing them

“I have heard it said that a 1.25% commission real estate service actually means less service & ultimately a lower sales result. Is there any truth to that?” Myth 1: “If Total Realty only charge 1.25% commission while others charge 3.95% then they must be cutting corners...” THE TRUTH: We offer a low commission rate because ours is a modern, efficient, technology centric and streamlined business. Other companies charge high rates to cover franchise fees, CEOs, multi-tiered management, lavish offices, and outdated office systems. Also, many other agents sell so few properties that they need to charge nearly 4% in order to make a living. Note that every client of ours is surveyed at the end of each sale and 95% to date rated our agents as ‘exceptional’ in their service and results. We are EXTREMELY proud of this. Myth 2: “A 3.95% real estate company can offer more exposure...” THE TRUTH: Total Realty uses the same media outlets as all real estate companies, in both printed media and the Internet. Where does everyone look when buying a house?- - Trademe.co.nz, Realestate.co.nz, and leading Real Estate publications. Total Realty is a prominent figure in all of these leading marketing avenues and we lead the way with internet ‘feature ads’ for every home. How safe is teeth whitening? Sparklewhite is a member of the New Zealand Cosmetic Teeth Whitening Association, which is your assurance that you’re dealing with a trained, qualified and safe cosmetic teeth whitening practitioner who takes pride in the quality of their service and care. Sparklewhite has gone the extra mile by being the first company to introduce the EURO non-peroxide teeth whitening system which is the safest product in the world when it comes to Teeth Whitening. Plus it meets all FDA and CE requirements. How does the Sparklewhite procedure work? Gums are protected with a gum wax and a special whitening gel is applied to the teeth. A patented blue light is shone on the teeth which starts the oxidisation process. The procedure is very simple and the treatment takes between 40 and 90 minutes depending on the original tooth colour. How much whiter will my teeth be? Teeth can become two to eight shades brighter, depending on their original colour and level of staining. The procedure will not harm dental work but will work to remove stains and make dentures, crowns and veneers less noticeable.

Ramset is considered a market leader in concrete fixing, drilling, lifting and sealing with Trade centres in all major locations and mobile representation we can come to you. Whether it is a powder actuated tool like the Spitfire or an earthquake rated 100% pure epoxy like Epcon C8-450 call Scott on 0274 363 381 for expert advice. Can I still use my old J208 Powder tool? Yes, but it must have a Ramset WOF every 6 months, and has been made obsolete by Piston tools like the SPITFIRE that are a safer option and fire 10 shots before reloading. What is chemical anchoring? And what is a good general purpose chemical anchoring product? Chemical anchoring is the use of a two part glue that bonds the fixing to the concrete. The benefit is high tensile pull out strength without the expansion effect that a Trubolt can have. A7-28U comes in an 825ml dispenser and provides great value for money, is suitable for low temp and is fast cure. C6 and C8 are generally engineer specified products, C8 being earthquake and tension zone approved.

What kind of problems can you help people with? I treat anyone who’s experiencing troubles with sex, sexual orientation, or gender. They could be life-long problems, or they could be acquired along the pathway towards sexual development. Why is it important to seek professional advice for these problems? Having a satisfying sex life is essential to living a fulfilling and happy life. It is easy to underestimate how important satisfying connective sex is in our lives. Sexual issues can’t be ignored forever, and can cause other issues like couple dissatisfaction and relationship breakups, depression and anxiety. Seeking professional advice and help for these issues can be the start of something amazing and new, and can lead to deeper connections to ourselves and to our partners. What qualifications do you have? My qualifications include PhD in psychology, and P.G.DipClin Psych. To add to my intensive research on the topic, reviewing the most up to date scientific articles on sexual dysfunctions and functioning, I have recently attended training run by Sex Therapy New Zealand and attended a sexual dysfunction conference. Ask your GP or ACC case manager about free sessions.

be around for another 50.” As a nonprofit organisation, Tahunanui Kindergarten’s philosophy is to offer high quality early childhood education that is affordable for all families. The Kindergarten Association have stuck by that and that is one of the reasons the kindergarten has been around for so many years says Linda. “We are really community focused. We want all children and their families to have fantastic and accessible early childhood education.” Currently there are more than 60 children enrolled at Tahunanui Kindergarten, with no more than 40 attending at any one time. It is a very popular kindy, the number of teachers per child is very high says Linda. “All of our teachers are fully qualified. We have extra adult support and our teachers in training are all in excess of our qualified teaching staff, which means we have very good ratios.” There is more to Tahunanui Kindergarten than meets the eye. Tucked away behind the main doors you’ll find a wonderfully spacious environment just waiting to be explored. Calling all past, present and future students, teachers and supporters, Tahunanui Kindergarten is celebrating a very special milestone this week and you are all invited to join the party. Tahunanui Kindergarten is marking its 50th anniversary, making it the longest serving early childhood centre in Tahuna. First opened and still located on Burrell Park, Muritai St in 1963 the kindergarten shares a boundary with Tahunanui School and Tahunanui Community Centre. The three facilities create a community education hub which also includes a playgroup and preschool offered by the community centre. The kindergarten has proudly offered a “truly community focused” early childhood education centre ever since says head teacher and former pupil Linda Hansen. “We are really excited to be reaching this milestone of 50 years in the Tahunanui community. And we want to

can see. This enables children to experience a wide range of activities, where they can develop physical skills and confidence, all while having fun. Over the years the outdoor space has been upgraded several times, but it has always been a steady favourite as generations of children have moved through the kindergarten says Linda. “Our outside area is a really great space. It has had a few updates but remains a challenging, fun environment for the children to flourish in.” Linda says the longevity of the kindergarten has come from how family oriented it is. “We are very welcoming to families and are very family focused. We encourage families to be as involved in as much or as little as they want in kindergarten. Whatever works for them.” With Tahunanui School right next door, the kindergarten offers a great transition to school. The teachers have a great relationship with the school’s new entrant teacher which is fostered to make the change from kindergarten to school as easy as possible for the children. “By the time children from the kindergarten go to move on, they already have a Caden Read, 5, who’s last day at Tahunanui Kindergarten is today, playing on the outdoor equipment at the kindy. group of friends they are ready to start school with and they are familiar with the environment and the teacher.” Ex pupil Joy Shackleton knows the benefits of attending a kindergarten in the heart of such a great community. She says she has many great memories of Tahunanui Kindergarten, so much so that she has sent all four of her boys there over the years, the youngest of which is currently still attending. “I was born and raised in Tahuna and have so many happy memories of the kindy. All of my boys love it and they’ve all attended. It has a really traditional, family focus.” Coinciding with the kindergarten’s 50th anniversary, there will be a change to the amount of hours it will offer families. The Kindergarten Association recently canvassed opinion from parents and the community and after considering the feedback, Tahunanui Kindergarten will now offer a full six hour day to children and parents. Linda says the extended hours will allow families with different schedules to utilize the kindergarten to better suit their needs and it was a positive step for everyone. “The feedback we have had is that the modern family wants more flexibility and more accessible hours, so we are excited to be able to offer a full day for children, commencing after our cel-

ebrations.” To celebrate their 50th anniversar y, Tahunanui Kindergarten is holding a teddy bears picnic between 5.30 and 7.30pm this Friday at the kindergarten grounds. Past students, parents, teachers and supporters are all welcome to attend. Each child will be bringing a teddy and there will be plenty of entertainment such as Kath Bee, a bouncy castle, best dressed ted competition and lots more. There will also be old photos galore so see if you can spot yourself in any, you might be surprised. The event will also be the launch of the latest Rainbow reading books which feature Tahunanui Kindergarten children. “This is a really fantastic opportunity for anyone who has had a part to play or been involved with Tahunanui kindergarten over the years. We would love to celebrate with you so come and join us this Friday evening.” A BBQ sausage sizzle will be on the go so either bring your own picnic for the evening or purchase something to eat at the event. The parents, teachers and helpers at Tahunanui Kindergarten have been working hard to organise this fantastic occasion, so take a walk down memory lane and see how much or how little the kindergarten has changed since you last attended. Help the current students and staff celebrate the 50th anniversary of a very special place. Phone Linda for any extra information about this Friday’s anniversary event or simply turn up between 5.30pm and 7.30pm at 53 Muritai St, Tahunanui. Jed, 10, Gus, 4, Seth, 6 and Murphy, 8, with mum Joy Shackleton were all Tahunanui Kindergarten pupils.

Payne Brothers win King of Forest crown Payne Brothers are the fastest logging crew around but only just after edging out Bryan Heslop Logging 1 in a dramatic Stihl New Zealand King of the Forest final held at the Logging Weekend at the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum near Wakefield on Saturday. Eight teams of four took on the challenge of completing four tasks including wire rope tying, assembling a chainsaw and chainsawing and splitting logs and in the finish it came down to one second with Payne Brothers winning in 4 minutes 57 seconds. Heslops actually finished the course in a faster time of four minutes 48 seconds but received a 10 second time penalty to hand the Winston Allnut Memorial Trophy to Paynes.

Mitchell the Crusader

Former Nelson College first XV captain Mitchell Drummond was last week named in the Crusaders squad for the 2014 Super Rugby season. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Mitchell Drummond will only have to glance across the changing shed to see how far his rugby career has come in the space of 12 months. This time last year Mitchell was the captain of the Nelson College first XV – or more simply an 18 year old year studying for NCEA exams. But this week he achieved a feat no ordinary teenager will reach – he was named in the Crusaders squad for the 2014 Super Rugby season. At 19 years old Mitchell is easily the youngest member of the team which is often revered for being historically the greatest ever franchise. While the Crusaders haven’t won a championship under coach Todd Blackadder, the roster is still stacked full of global superstars. Daniel Carter might be on a sabbatical for most of next season, but Mitchell’s new team mates include Richie McCaw, Kieran Read and a casual 17 other past or present All Blacks. “I’ve always wanted to be a Crusader so to have it happen at 19 is unreal. This time last year I was sitting there and watching them on TV and now I’m going to be turning up to the same training as team-mates,” he says. “I still have to pinch myself.” When Mitchell left Nelson College at the end of last year he had a big decision to make – stay in Nelson and play for the Tasman Makos or head to Christchurch and force his way through the Canterbury set-up. With no guarantees that he’d be picked up by Canterbury, Mitchell turned down an offer with Tasman

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz and shifted south. In hindsight the move has certainly paid off, making his ITM Cup debut against Manawatu in Christchurch and now signing a two year deal with the Crusaders. “It was tough to move away but I’m just grateful everything has worked out the way it has. I wanted to move out of home and do my own thing. I wanted a new challenge outside of sport like cooking, doing my own washing and that was a challenge in itself,” he explains when asked about his move out of Nelson. Just like at ITM Cup level, Mitchell will be third choice halfback behind Andy Ellis and Willi Heinz, but for the moment he’s happy to bide his time and learn as much as possible. “They’re both real good guys, they’re best of mates and they’ve welcomed me in. I just want to work as hard as I can in that first year and whatever happens, happens.” There’s also a good chance Mitchell will get an early taste of Super Rugby in a reasonably familiar setting with the announcement that the Crusaders will host the Highlanders in Motueka for a pre-season match on February 7. “My old man is born and bred in Mot so to have him there and all my family and friends will be awesome and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Nelson 4x4 driver wins 'winch challenge' When Andrew “Sav” Satherly won the Mainland Winch Challenge last year it should have been the highlight of his 4x4 career. Instead, he felt like his 1NZ was unfairly won due to the lack of North Island competitors at an event that was supposed to be the national championship. So this year, Andrew and his codriver Steven “Scotty” Newport made sure their second national championship victory in consecutive years would be won against the best in their outlaw class.

And last month the duo claimed that feat in Manukau. “We feel like we slightly unfairly won it because there was no real North Island competition,” Andrew explains. “This year there was plenty of competition. It is [satisfying] knowing that we can kick their arse.” The Mainland Winch Challenge Series, which consists of five South Island races, is up there with the toughest four-wheel driving competitions in the country. Driving a red Jeep Wrangler through un-

predictable and various terrains, the task is simple; get to the finish line in the quickest time. There’s a winch on board, which comes in handy when the car is stuck in thick bog, and makes the competition unique. “Some races can be 50m through a bog and out the other side or it can be up to a kilometre long in the rough weaving through trees.” Andrew’s 1NZ title came following an already successful season where he won four of the five South Island events.

Tennis reps dominate Marlborough

Nelson’s top senior tennis players have reclaimed the Lucas Cup, beating Marlborough comprehensively in the annual representative fixture at Hope on Sunday. A beautiful day turned into a sizzler on court both from the weather’s point of view and from the quality of tennis produced. The Lucas Cup pits Nelson’s top four men and top four women against their Marlborough counterparts, and despite some of the games being well contested, the Nelson team never looked threatened, taking the trophy with a score card of 11 - 5. There were some strong performances from Kenta Naka and David Averill as the doubles pair cruised past Marlborough’s Hamish Morrow and Daryl Narper 6-1, 6-2. Both men went

on to win their singles comprehensively as well; Kenta beat Hamish 6-3, 6-1 and David beat Brendon Sutherland 6-1, 6-0. Top ladies pair, Lynnie Nevin and Suzanne Spence worked their magic to beat the top Marlborough ladies 6-4, 7-5. One of Nelson’s top juniors, Laura Roberts, showed a polished performance in her debut as a senior rep player beating Eveline Apthorpe 6-1, 6-3 in her singles and making a winning doubles pairing with Leanne Greep 7-5, 7-6 against Sandy Stubbs and Abbey Hogg. A spokesperson from Nelson Bays Tennis says there were some great performances from the entire team producing quality tennis that was enjoyable to watch and winning the cup topped it all off.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Everyone in Nelson must have been out fishing on Sunday morning and who could blame them after a very wild Labour Weekend? With such a perfect forecast the only place to be was on the water in Tasman Bay. The car park was bursting at the seams forcing cars with boat trailers to park on both sides of Akersten Street. Boats were lined up very early in the morning 3 abreast on the ramp, 3 waiting above those that were launching and others lined up waiting their turn. Having been on a busy boat ramp, here are a few simple tips to ensure you don’t hold others up at the boat ramp. Make sure you have removed the propeller flag, undone boat strops, put bungs in and whatever else you deem necessary to put your boat in the water before you back down the ramp. This way you won’t hold others up. Remember the boat ramp is there to launch your boat as quickly and efficiently as possible. Likewise when also retrieving and this will help ensure are no long waits for those behind you. As for the snapper, they are everywhere out there at the moment, with good catches of big fish getting reported daily now. Best method so far is the trusty old long line, which has been producing snapper in excess of 10kg. Generally speaking it’s a good idea to only leave the setline down for an hour or so with a lot of

fish around otherwise you can end up with a few too many and also if they aren’t there you haven’t wasted too much time in a non productive spot. There are quite a few more fish being caught on the rods than last season, averaging between the 35 and 50cm mark. We found squid worked well on the setline while chunks of pillies worked well with snapper flasher rigs on the rods. Reports of fish right up to the harbour entrance and a few off Rabbit Island have been coming in. Huge schools of kahawai have been working the inner harbour and along the Boulder Bank. Look for the birds that are actively working and this will help you to find the schools of fish. Spinners are the go on them at the moment as they are actively feeding on the surface. Gurnard are also very plentiful and make a nice addition to the day's catch. It won’t be long before the schools of kingfish return, I’ll give you an update in the next few weeks how to target them. Scallops at Okiwi Bay are still in excellent condition but a little hard to get. We were averaging about 30-40 takeable scallops a tow last weekend and got a couple of dozen good oysters as bonus. Enjoy the great weather and awesome fishing but remember to leave a few for next time.

A snapper being measured for the DBFC competition and then being released in Tasman Bay. This way club members are only taking what they need and not everything they catch.

Three of Nelson's top young road cyclists George Bennett, Sean Hambrook and Kieran Hambrook are back home after a long season racing overseas. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Top local cyclists back home after big season Three of the region's top young road cyclists, George Bennett and Kieran and Sean Hambrook, are back home after finishing long seasons racing in the northern hemisphere but for two of them there is still one last assignment before they can enjoy a hard-earned rest. George is having some time off the bike after riding for RadioShack Leopard Trek in a number of the world's biggest races including the Giro Italia and Tour of Beijing. The 23-year-old admits he is exhausted after racing for almost 11 months and suffering some nasty injuries including a hairline fracture of the spine suffered in a crash in the Giro. "I crashed on day three when a rider went down in front of me and I got a pedal in my back. I couldn't feel my legs and couldn't stand properly when I got up so there was a bit of panic and when I was helped back onto my bike I could hardly pedal. "I had a fracture in my spine but nothing showed up in the initial X-ray because my back was so swollen. I spent the next 18 days riding with a hairline fracture and suffering and getting dropped – it was disappointing because I had been going so well before the Giro." George bounced back to ride strongly in the Tour of Utah finishing 11th, the US pro Challenge in Colorado and the water-logged World Champs before ending the season in the Tour Beijing and Japan Cup. Now he is enjoying a rest before heading back to Europe later this month when he will join a new team for a two week training camp. "RadioShack are concentrating on the classic one day races next season so they didn't renew my contract. All the teams are cutting riders from their budgets – there's something like 100 proriders without jobs for next year – so I'm really relieved to have a team although I can't say who it is just yet," George says. In contrast to George, Kieran, 22, and Sean, 19, have been clocking up the kilometres since returning from Europe to get ready for the Tour of

Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz Southland which started last Sunday (November 3). After a long season racing for T Palm Continental in Belgium, Kieran said it has been hard work staying motivated to train for Southland. "I'd already had a long season and when I got back daylight saving hadn't started and there was no one to ride with," Kieran says. "Motivation was quite a problem but I managed to get a few good weeks together and get a few good miles so I'm happier now." Kieran finished second in the King of the Mountains and Sprint competitions in last year's Tour of Southland and says he plans to ride aggressively again this year to try and win one of those jerseys. Sean, who was fifth in the general classification early in last year's Tour of Southland, is also chasing top honours although he expects they will have to ride for the team's best performed rider Lachlan Norris of Australia. "It's been mentally hard to keep riding but you have to make the effort because the Tour of Southland is New Zealand's biggest tour," Sean says. After a series of top 10 finishes racing in his first year out of juniors for his French team Sojasun, Sean is determined to keep improving so he can get on the podium when he returns to France next year. "It was a big jump going up from juniors and although I had quite a few top tens I never cracked the podium and that's what it's all about." Nelson's Tom Ashley is also riding in the Tour of Southland for team Creations Signs L and M Group Racing. After the Tour of Southland, the next assignment for George, Kieran and Sean will be the Tour de Vineyards to be held around the Tasman district from December 31 to January 4.

Club sides schooled at Tasman 7s

Don't be surprised to see more schoolboys in the Tasman Makos rugby sevens squad this year. While Nelson College stole the limelight at Saturday's Turf Hotel Tasman Club Sevens, winning the one-sided final 50-5 over historic rivals Nelson, the overall quality on display at the tournament left a lot to be desired. Mike Kerrisk, who coached the Tasman side at the national championship last year before stepping back into a more managerial role this year, says it was very likely some Nelson College players will make the training squad after their Condor 7s commitments after showing up some more experienced senior players on the weekend. "After the Condor 7s tournament we'll be tapping some of the Nelson College boys on the shoulder and seeing if they're interested. As they've shown today they've played more sevens than anybody," he says. Mike described the quality on display as a "mixed bag", adding that some players may have played their way out of a spot on the roster. "There have been some boys that have really stuck up their hand and they were guys that were already on our paper but there are some in the mens and womens grades that we had an eye on but this weekend proved that going to the next level

will take a lot of work. Across the board, with the exception of Nelson College, fitness is a very, very big factor and there was a lack of game fitness. These girls and boys know this is the sevens season, they know when the competitions are, and they should have come here fit." Ten teams were entered in the men's grade with Stoke and Marlborough side Central reaching the semi-final stage. In the women's draw which had just three teams, Marist were too good for Waimea Old Boys, winning the final 20-12. A training squad for both men and women was likely to be named before the end of this week, ahead of a Christchurch invitational tournament in a fortnight. The mens team could include a handful of front-line Tasman Makos that did not compete on Saturday including Robbie Malneek, Billy Guyton, Mitchell Scott, Kieran Fonotia and Tevita Koloamatangi, all of whom Mike says had shown some interest. The South Island tournament in Timaru, which will act as a qualifier for nationals, will be held on November 23.

No Marty Mo yet in 'Mo'hana Three time "Mo"hana winner Marty Campbell.

Getting in the spirit and sporting a moustache at RunMahana has always been well received and this year 68 have already indicated their intentions by entering the "Mo"hana section. Be it growing the real thing this month or simply sporting a fake or finger moustache, there is plenty of interest in the fun side – also a charity side – of RunMahana. Marty Campbell is a three times winner, but to date his entry hasn't been sighted, probably because he is still out in mourning for his Aussie inspirator Mark "Chopper" Read, who sadly passed away early last month. Organiser Greg Dykzeul says he is sure the champion will return. "No doubt he is tucked away out of early

stubble sight, manuring and manicuring its 2013 design towards it's public release on December 1 when he will again sway the public and judges that he is the man to vote for and walk away with a Trailways $100 dinner voucher. Along the way all are creating valuable awareness for Prostate Cancer which is the charity chosen to benefit again from this years romp around the Woollaston Estate countryside. Greg says registrations have already surpassed 500 and are growing daily, especially with the fantastic South Pacific prize of a trip for two to Samoa to be won. Full details of the run and how to register can be found at www.run mahana.co.nz.

Each Committee comprises a mix of Board members and community members. The members of the committees are appointed by the Board. Community members participate as full members of the committees, taking an active role in advising the Board on the planning and development of health and disability support services in the region. The Advisory Committees give recommendations to the Board which makes the decisions about how to fund and provide services to meet the needs of the people in the region. The emphasis will be on improving the health status of the region’s population. The time commitment required includes: Committee meetings currently two monthly for 3 hours in either Nelson or Blenheim; preparation and travelling time; occasional workshops and community meetings. Members receive remuneration for each formal meeting attended. Applications Invited The term of the current community representatives expires on 31 December 2013 and so the Board is calling for applications from people interested in taking on this role for the next three years. Current members may reapply.
