Families left in the cold

More and more families are pleading with the council to allow existing wood burners to be upgraded after suffering huge power bills or simply shivering through the night. Twenty four abatement notices have been issued by Nelson City Council staff to homes around the region, with many being told to have their fires capped or completely taken out. But many home owners say they don’t want to give up wood

burners and are quite happy to upgrade to cleaner burning fires, if only the council would let them. Craig Ashton and Brenda Mathews bought their Bishopdale family home in April this year from Housing New Zealand. They poured their life savings into the property and borrowed more to replace the filthy carpet and paint the rooms. They say they did not know the fire wasn’t

They say they can’t afford any of those options but because they have access to free firewood would be happy to borrow more money and install a clean burning fire, but

Nelson College’s tilt at history As the first school to ever play a competitive game of rugby in New Zealand, Nelson College has a long tradition in the 15-a-side sport. And when you mention tradition, rugby and Nelson College in the same sentence, it’s hard not to think of the Quadrangular Tournament – the longest running secondary school rugby tournament in the world. The competition, now in its 87th year, sees Nelson College face traditional rivals Christ’s College, Wanganui Collegiate and Wellington College in a bid to claim the coveted piece of silverware. The four year hosting cycle has landed on Nelson College for the 2013 edition of the tournament, meaning the four colleges will grace the hallowed turf of the Nelson College front field this week. they’re not allowed to. They are fighting the abatement notice and taking the decision to the Environment Court. “They keep saying about families being able to afford to buy homes and then they lump us with this stuff,” says Brenda. “Give us a break.” Other families have come forward too, contacting Nelson Weekly about massive power bills since switching to heat pumps or frustration that they can no longer use their fires. Grey Power president Neville Male says the “draconian restrictions” are a huge issue for many of its members. “The situation that currently prevails in Nelson allows some residents to use approved burners, some to not to use approved burners and others to continue to use old burners installed before the restrictions were imposed. That is a totally undemocratic and unfair state of affairs endorsed by a council policy that is causing

discomfort. She says heavy handed regulations which force the removal of wood burners, means many home owners simply cannot afford to pay higher power bills or invest in expensive heating alternatives. “It is time to end this blunt instrument approach to clean air, and find a way of providing what many people lack; a warm, dry home, and a heating option at a price they can afford.” She says some areas need the restrictions because of a government-set clean air standard but other areas should be allowed the burners and promises to investigate the issue if elected. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says something needs to be done before next winter and he will review the plan if elected for another term. “It’s time now that we bring in an expert panel to review this straight away because technology has moved on since this plan started in 2002. We can’t have another winter without a solution on this.”

World Cup a win for Nelson Phillip Rollo The announcement last week that Cricket World Cup games will be played in Nelson has rocketed Saxton Oval into contention for more international action. Saxton Oval will host three world cup games in 2015 and don’t be surprised if another announcement sees the BlackCaps playing here this summer, most likely against the West Indies. Therese Walsh, New Zealand’s head of the Cricket World Cup, believes it is likely that the venue, now deemed one of the country’s top seven cricket grounds, will get a test run before the tournament. “We’re certainly looking for test opportunities whether New Zealand Cricket provides those or not I don’t know,” she says. “But if they didn’t, we’d look to work with them to find some opportunity to test the ground once it’s fully accredited.” Nelson was the surprise package at last Tuesday’s tournament fixture and venue announcement, getting three matches featuring West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland and two other nations. In the past, Saxton Oval’s most high profile fixtures have included a women’s international and first class domestic cricket, but despite that Therese labelled Nelson City Council’s bid as “excellent” and says it really stood out. “Firstly Saxton Oval, because it’s a beautiful, quality venue and it looks ready for some international cricket but the overall Nelson’s bid document was really good and it was clear Nelson was passionate.”

New retail complex set for CBD Your Community Newspaper

A new 6000 square metre, multi storied retail complex in Nelson’s CBD will be discussed by Nelson City councillors today. News of the complex – which is confidential – was leaked during an interview by councillor Pete Rainey on TV3’s Firstline programme on Monday morning. He didn’t want to elaborate when contacted by Nelson Weekly but Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says discussions have been on-going since 2007 and the council will decide on the plan this week, with an announcement due on Thursday. Aldo refused to give any more information but said the development would add significantly to Nelson. “The retail environment in Nelson is strong, it’s a boutique retail environment. Discount stores find it tough in the CBD, that’s why they’re on the periphery of town or in Richmond. “Nelson is about entertainment value of shopping on the strip and there is literally tens and tens of retailers wanting to get onto Trafalgar St and Bridge and Hardy St’s. People are wanting to get into town.” When it was put to him that 6000 square metres – or just smaller than the size of a rugby field – must mean it will be multi storied to fit in the CBD, Aldo confirmed as much but wouldn’t say how many stories or who the anchor tenant may be.

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan says news of the complex is exciting for Nelson. “It’s fantastic news that the city is welcoming a new retail development. This will add choice and diversity to our already vibrant city.” Cathy says reports that the CBD is losing business to Richmond and is suffering is off the mark and she can see why new retailers would want to move in. “The city’s retail environment has been showing consistent growth and many of our long-standing retailers have reported sales are up on the same time last year. Nelson city is, and always will be, the retail heart of the Nelson and Tasman regions and we enjoy a thriving hospitality, entertainment and cultural scene which makes the city a destination.” Nicola Dolan, centre manager at Fashion Island, says sales are up and she’s not surprised another complex is eyeing up the CBD. “We have been in the heart of Nelson for almost six years now and business continues to grow every year. In June the centre showed an increase of over 10 per cent against last year, that equates to a significant increase in dollars spent this year in Nelson City, versus last year.”

Bashed cop recovering after surgery The police officer who had his jaw broken in three places from a single punch is recovering well. The incident caused outrage from senior police officials and left the officer in hospital. He suffered three fractures to his jaw, received 40 stitches to his face and will require dental reconstruction.

He was treated at Nelson Hospital and is now recovering at home and is expected to be off work for about two weeks. Matei Jackson Peti, 23, was charged with the attack and was last Friday denied bail and remanded in custody. The officer and a colleague witnessed a man assaulting a woman near the corner of Waimea Rd and Franklyn St last Tuesday

afternoon, when the officer intervened the offender attacked him. The offender then attempted to attack the second officer, but ran off after being pepper sprayed. Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Steve Greally, says the attack had shocked himself and the officer’s colleagues. “I’m in no doubt that the wider Nelson

community will be disgusted by this attack. It is completely unacceptable for an officer who is performing his duty in protecting the community to be subject to this sort of behaviour,” he says. Both the police commissioner Peter Marshall and the minister of police Anne Tolley had also expressed their concern to him.

Nelson retailer wins trip to Africa Kirsten Sainty-Beri’s sales skills have earned her a trip of a lifetime. The Cotton On Kids Nelson manager has won an in-house competition with other stores across the world by selling the most “charity items”, including wrist bands, water and bags. The Nelson store was the secondhighest selling world-wide, pipped only by a store in the United States. As a result she will travel with 23 other store managers from around the world to Uganda, where Cotton On Kids sponsor a village. She will see first-hand what the money raised for the village has done to change the lives of those living there and will even get to meet the

child she personally sponsors, with money from her own pay packet. Kirsten says the three month promotion was hard work and her record of selling a charity item to every 1.8 customers took a lot of talking. “We had to really push it and I had to give this whole spiel and we did extra things like Fashion Island had a show here and they purchased a whole bunch to go in the goodie bags and I’d encourage friends to come in and purchase them.” She says she’s excited about the trip and seeing the village. “When I won I was just so overwhelmed, I nearly had tears in my eyes. I can’t wait to go and see what it’s all about.”

Local rings for first gay marriage Vacuum For years Glen James has been making civil union rings for local gay couples – now he is making the rings for the first ever gay wedding in this country. Glen, who operates from his Trafalgar St premises, was asked to provide the rings for a national radio competition which is hoping to marry the first gay and lesbian couple in New Zealand when the law comes into effect on August 19. He says he jumped at the opportunity to provide the rings and thinks the new law could provide a boost to business. "I've already been invited to one local wedding where the couple are lesbians and I'm making their rings as well and I know of heaps of gay couples in Nelson who have had a civil union so hopefully a few will be taking that extra step." Gay and lesbian couples in New Zealand aren't allowed to marry but are able to have a civil union. That will all change on August 19 when an historic amendment made earlier this year by parliament, will come into force. Glen says the promotion was something different and it will be exciting to think the first gay couple married in New Zealand will wear his rings for the rest of their lives. "It will be cool to have a part in it and hopefully they'll be the first and I'll have a hand to play in history being made." Both couples taking part in The Edge promotion live in the North Island and the wedding will take place in Rotorua.

Community patrol on the hunt for more volunteers

Nelson Community Patrol members John Wyllie and Ange Herbert are looking for more volunteers to join the patrol. Photo: Andrew Board.

For 19 years the Nelson Community Patrol has been keeping an eye on Nelson and now it needs another few sets of eyes to help out. The group was rewarded for its efforts at the Trustpower Community Awards last week and coordinator Ange Herbert says it’s incredibly rewarding being a part of the group. The patrol was established in 1994 after the murder of Kevin O’Laughlin in Montgomery Square car park. Since then it has undergone several name changes but kept to its core role of providing police with an extra set of eyes and ears. The group is supported by Nelson Police and Nelson City Council and has three volunteers working every Friday and Saturday. Ange says they have around 30

volunteers but they’d like another six or seven and volunteers can either patrol in the car or monitor the city’s security cameras, which are viewed at police headquarters. John Wyllie says he got involved after his daughter was assaulted in the city one night and says he wanted to make a difference. “When that happened I thought ‘this isn’t the city I grew up in’ and decided to do what I could to help.” He says the job – from 10.30pm until 3.30am – is exciting and rewarding. “It’s good when you know that you’ve played a part in keeping someone safe or helping the police catch someone that’s done something wrong.” To find out more contact Ange on 027 618 1404 or angeherbert@ yahoo.co.nz.

The Big Latch On at the Victory Community Centre attracted 35 women, who breastfed simultaneously for one minute as part of a nationwide promotion held to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. By breastfeeding at the same time in groups all over the country and trying to set the record for the most women to do so, each year

event organisers Small Beginnings Group, LLC and Women's Health Action hope to raise awareness and increase support for breastfeeding women all over the country. The 2012 record to be beaten is 8862 women and their children throughout New Zealand breastfeeding at the same time.

Neighbours plan mass garage sale If what they say about one man’s trash being another man’s treasure is true, local bargain hunters will be in for a treat if they head along to Brooklands Rd this weekend. Not just one but seven garage sales will be held along the Atawhai St this weekend, whose residents have rallied together to offer the unique secondhand shopping experience. Heather Thomas says the idea came to the residents, who also form a neighbourhood support group, as it was great way to get rid of things they didn’t want, together. “We are a really stable neighbourhood and some of us have been here a very long time. I’ve been here for 45 years. We all look out for each other and because we’ve all been here so long, we all have a lot of things we need to get rid of.” She says the collection won’t just include the usual items found at a typical garage sale because alongside the usual TV sets, linen, kitchen and tabletop wear, there will be more interesting items up

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz for grabs such as a trailer, a boat, collectables, furniture and more. “There’s no rats and mice and silly stuff, it’s all really good quality.” She says the beauty of the idea is that people can come along with a specific need in mind and find what they are looking for in each garage. “It would be ideal for someone who was setting up a flat, you could probably get each item at each garage sale.” Gillian, another Brooklands Rd resident, thinks the idea is fantastic and is looking forward to getting rid of some of her belongings. “It will be my first garage sale. I think doing it together is a great idea.” To attend the garage sales head to Brooklands Rd this Saturday and follow the signs. Please note that none of the garage sales will be open for business until 9am.

Brooklands Rd residents Gillian, Graeme, Logan, 11, Ian, Heather, Claire and Lachlan, 6, with just some of the household goods, furniture and collectables that will be up for grabs at their neighbourhood garage sale this weekend. Deciding to combine their efforts to offer local bargain hunters a one stop shop, a total of seven homes on the Atawhai St will be taking part in the en masse sale, with doors opening for business at the set time of 9am. 30 years of teaching our dancers

For 30 years Peta Spooner has been teaching the youth of Nelson how to have fun with dance, and despite the significant milestone she says she’s up for 30 more. Peta moved to Nelson with her husband in the winter of 1983 and within weeks held her first dance class with around 40 students coming along. By the end of that year she had around 100 students and has never looked back with tens of thousands of Nelsonians swivelling, twirling and stretching on the dance floors of the Peta Spooner Academy of Dance in the three decades since. The sheer number of people Peta has taught or influenced is staggering and she says she still loves it and her love of dance struck at an early age. “I’ve always taught, I remember very clearly when I was a kid that if other kids came over to play I’d make them all line up and dress up. We had a record player and I’d make them line up and dance. It’s instinctive and I have a great passion still to teach and to share and give to a community what I’ve been lucky enough to have.” She has seen around 25 students attend the country’s top dance schools and several more have danced for the Footnote Company. Peta Spooner Academy of Dance is also one of the very few in the country that is accredited to teach the teachers to fellowship level, the highest level possible, something Peta says she is very proud of. But her success, she believes, isn’t in helping those dancers and teachers at the elite level.

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz “I’m always so proud of our kids who have gone on to dance, but equally proud of our kids who have gone on to be good people and to be happy and be part of a community. It’s really important to me not to just recognise the ones who are good, but to acknowledge them all as equals.” In that vein, Peta also teaches special needs students and includes them in her end of year show. She also has several students there on a “kind of scholarship” and says being involved in the community is the legacy she’d like to be known for. She has also led dancing trips to Finland and Jamaica and fondly remembers when she involved dads in several performances by making them dance “Swan Lake”. “We introduced the men to do Swan Lake and we’re going to recall the swans this year for a reunion. We did that because dads only ever paid the bill, men never got a chance to be a part of the ballet thing, it was always the mothers and we thought ‘let’s do something to include them’.” She’s hoping to recall the swans for this year’s show to help celebrate her 30th year. She says teaching means so much to her, she can’t think of not being involved in the academy. “I just love it, I can’t imagine not interfering in people’s lives and bossing people around and doing just what I like. I’m very happy

Dance teacher Peta Spooner has been teaching ballet and other forms of dance in Nelson for 30 years. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. with the way the students, parents and my working team around me help out.” The academy now has five qualified teachers, plus two in training and around 180 students. She says the success of her dance academy is its involvement in the community, keeping up with the latest styles and innovations and the can-do attitude that has been its hallmark. “You’ve got to do it without bloody whinging. Just get on and do it. I’m not good with money and everyone will tell you I’m useless. I don’t mean to be not good with

Saxton Stadium: Alec Louverdis used a curious phrase, when asked if flood waters could enter the stadium again. He reiterated that the flooding was a “one in 500 year event". As he was not alive 500 years ago this country was in its natural state and no weather patterns were recorded, I doubt his statement to be accurate. In 2013 these rivers and creeks are contained, guided through narrow culverts, native bush has been replaced by pine forests, houses are

brought to you by built on concrete pads and large areas of flat land made unable to absorb water. Walk along Orphanage Creek, silted up and full of rubbish, and it does not take much imagination to expect another flood. Dot Parsons. Celebrating 75 years in business. It’s a double whammy milestone for the team at MS Ford Nelson, who are not only celebrating the 150th birthday of Henry Ford, the legendary man behind the iconic car brand, but who have also reached a special anniversary of their own, making them one of the longest serving Ford dealerships in the country. MS Ford Nelson is turning 75, and to mark the incredible feat the team is taking a look back on just how far they’ve come. What started as a small company originating from humble beginnings has since flourished into the well-known business it is today, one that is well and truly part of the fabric of our community. It’s been a short 75 years and in that time thousands of local motorists have turned the keys to their first Ford, second Ford, new Ford and the everything in between Ford, all at the expert hands of MS Ford Nelson. During a time when the Ford Model A was at the peak of its popularity, with more than 15 million already lining the streets worldwide, MS Motors Ltd was established in Nelson. Just two years after Ford officially entered the New Zealand market after taking the rest of the world by storm, Dick Stevenson and Bob McKegg kick started their business by taking over an existing car dealership in the heart of Nelson’s CBD. To begin, their premises had a single workshop, a petrol station and a showroom with space for just one car, but even at

that time Ford was looked to as the premium name in automobiles, and the business grew from strength to strength, quickly becoming a one stop shop for all things auto. Things went into overdrive and soon MS Motors was expanding to include not only cars, but accessories, repairs, maintenance and services too, with Bob and Dick responding to the huge demand for Ford in the Nelson Tasman region. People not only wanted a Ford because the brand was at the forefront of car manufacturing worldwide, but they wanted to be a part of everything the name represented, high quality, innovation and a worldwide reputation for excellence. As Henry Ford once famously said “You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do” so MS Motors set about thriving in the local market as a multifaceted hub for all things Ford. The business had well and truly taken off by the time Bob McKegg bowed out of the business, leaving three generations of Stevenson’s to take over the reins. By the time Bernie Stevenson followed in his father’s footsteps, the business was in full swing. During that time MS Motors employed up to 60 staff including apprentices, to run a paint and panel shop, a repairs and maintenance workshop, servicing, tyres, two petrol sta-

Bernie joined the business running the used car sales side of the business and eventually finished his time as the director. He recalls the business offering the people of Nelson “the best of everything in auto” and says he is proud to see that is

still the case today. “MS Motors in the beginning was much the same as MS Ford is today, bar a few changes including the name. We serviced clientele from all over the region and customers from the agricultural industry, local business owners and families turned to

us as their first choice for a new vehicle.” He says a well established reputation has stuck by MS Ford, and like the days of yesteryear, the current teams focus on superior customer service has seen them remain an industry leader. While you won’t find the Anglia, Mk II Escort or the Zephyr in the showroom anymore, you will find a redeveloped version of the stalwart Falcon, alongside many other parts of history that still live on despite the many years that have passed since the business first opened its doors. Now going by the name of MS Ford and with services refined to a specialist level, Tinting it’s still surprising to take a

look at some comparisons of today’s operations says dealer principal Alan Kirby. “It’s quite amazing to look back and see that the same values that drove the business to success back in the thirties, are still ringing true today. Businesses of this age are hard to come by these days, and we are incredibly proud at just how long MS Ford has stood the test of time. While MS Ford no longer offers paint work, and have moved away from the agricultural machinery side of things, the servicing, parts and repairs side of the business are stronger than ever. The team still run three petrol stations and pride themselves on being able to look after a wide range of customers, now offering a model of vehicle to suit every occupation and interest, supplying people looking for high quality, power and performance in

Celebrating 75 years in business. their car. They’ve done their fair share of mileage, but MS Ford haven’t forgotten where they started, or their goal of supplying Nelsonians with world class, award winning vehicles that continue to set the bar. “We are all Ford die-hards at heart and know that our customers love Ford too. We are as committed to our customers as they are to us, and that’s why we will always strive to be the driving force behind Nelson’s new car market.” While MS Ford may have 75 years on the clock, a lot of that time is not only down to their dedication to the Nelson public but vice versa says Alan. “The loyal community has seen the business stand the test of time and for that reason we strive to offer the full experience. We take the time, the care and offer expert advice when it comes to purchasing a vehicle. We see the experience as a journey that each customer should enjoy. I think that’s why we see so many repeat customers.” Their long standing presence in the community has seen MS Ford give back to community projects that they strongly believe in. They have committed to long term sponsorship of the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust, supporting them in their fundraising efforts at events such as MS Ford’s Pink is Infashion. Alan says they will always be the first to put their hand up to support such events simply because they “want to give back to the community in every way we can.” To celebrate their birthday, MS Ford would like to say a huge thank you to the community and invite the public to head down and celebrate with them this week. Scottish dancers celebrate 60 years

The Nelson Scottish Country Dance Club celebrated their 60th anniversary on Saturday. The club, which was first formed in Nelson in 1953, acknowledged the special occasion with an afternoon tea which was

hosted by current members of the group for its life and ex-club members who can no longer dance. The event was then followed by an evening of Scottish country dancing to Christchurch band Scotch Measure.

Let’s talk potatoes. After you have purchased your seed potatoes, spread them out in a dry, shady area. Don't leave them in the bag that you have bought them in! Wait until potato sprouts are about 10 cms long. This is called chitting. Why, I don’t know. The dictionary has three explanations. 1. A short informal letter. 2. A child. A girl. Hence the expression “A chit of a girl” 3. A shoot [noun] To sprout [verb] To cause or encourage to sprout. That’s the one we want! Place the seed potatoes about 25cms apart. [Sprouts facing upwards] of course! Carefully cover with soil. Try not to damage the sprouts! Incidentally, if you are in doubt about the right way up when planting bulbs, place the bulb on its side. Mother nature [and the bulb] will see to it that shoots will find their way to the surface. Clever eh! The same rule applies to potatoes! As the plants grow, continue to mould earth around the shoots to protect potatoes from greening, insect damage and frost. Apply potato fertiliser if you wish, and water regularly. Potatoes can be purchased singly, so if you are living in temporary accommodation or have limited growing space, why not try growing a potato in a bucket? You will need to make a few drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket. Place some soil in the bottom, add your potato and cover with more soil. Keep adding soil as the shoots

grow. Water regularly, and hey presto! In time, a bucket of potatoes to keep you fed. I got this idea when a gentleman told me that one Lisetta potato will produce a good half bucket of mature potatoes. So. If you planted one early variety, one mid season, and one late season, you would be home and hosed with very little effort and if you move on, the potatoes go with you! I would suggest you choose varieties that produce abundantly, and have good flavour. Another gentleman told me that Allure potatoes make wonderful wedges. You par boil or steam first. Then you shake the potatoes about well [I can’t tell you his exact words!] to create a rough texture to the surfaces. Cut into wedges, place in a baking pan, sprinkle with oil, season to taste and enjoy the end result. Yet another gentleman wanted to know when to plant potatoes. We had a colourful discussion. “When they are ready” I said. “Yes but when?” he repeated. “When they are ready” once again from me. “But WHEN?” In desperation I muttered that planting should be completed by Labour Weekend. “That’s what I wanted to know!” he bellowed. But the answer is still When They Are Ready. Is he going to “Chit” his potatoes, and wait until Labour Weekend to do his planting? He’ll probably have to knit the shoots together to keep them tidy! Oh dear!

sis on it because it crosses the pathway of every rugby follower in the college that is still alive.” With reunions for four first XVs from the 1960s, full school hakas, an old boys dinner and various other activities, Nelson College headmaster Gary O’Shea says Quad Tournament is simply the biggest event on the school’s calendar. “Without much doubt this is the biggest event in the four year period. We’ve got three of the other oldest schools in the country here,” he says. “Having the whole school watching gives us an advantage and our boys will be up for it.” All of Nelson College’s past All Blacks, including its most recent, Wyatt Crockett, have taken part but not all of them have been able to play at home, which is something Gary hoped his players would not only cherish but flourish in. The final will kick off at 12.30pm.

Nelson’s other try-scorers were Tema Faifua, Jesse Rush, David Havili and Mitchell Thwaites, while David also kicked three conversions.

Suburban Black settle for draw Carol Cook

Netball Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz After a shocking weather forecast for Saturday, netballers young and old, along with coaches, umpires and supporters would have been pleasantly surprised when the sun shone over Saxton Courts. In the Grade 5 game Suburban Black made a good fist of their first game as the promoted team when they met Waimea College C. It may have been a case of first up nerves for Suburban as they looked to be at sixes and sevens. Waimea made the better start with shooters, Aliya Egan and Jade Johnson receiving stress free ball from their feeders Jill Maisey and Mel Harris and went into the first break 6-4 up. Once Suburban settled and relaxed, their game improved – their better timing through court soon paid dividends, and goal attack Jan Maree Ross’ conversion rate also increased. The teams were tied at the major break 12 all. Waimea continued to ring the changes at each break with the most effective being Mel Harris’ move from centre to wing attack. Mel provided superb ball placement to her shooters and picked up considerable ball around the edge of the defensive circle. Suburban led by a solitary goal going into the final quarter, and Waimea scored the final goal of the game to bring the score to 20 all which was a fitting result given the closeness of the

Premier grade preview: At 5.45pm on Thursday Waimea College will match up against Stoke NBS. Stoke NBS took the last game by six to inflict Waimea’s first loss of the season. Only a fool could not see the potential in Waimea College, and they will start the game as odds on favourites. Waimea will be back to full strength with the return of Hannah Davenhill, Katie Ditzel and Georgia Davies from their NZ Volleyball duties. Waimea’s strength is their versatility and the way they play a consistent four quarters, Stoke NBS are guilty of “ dropping the ball” in one or two quarters. Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro have hit their straps of late and are playing the netball they are capable of playing. The whole roster is lifting with feeders Lisa Book and Hilary Jones providing quality ball into shooters Kathleen Thornalley and the scoring machine of Nicki Rampton. Richmond’s scoring rate is likely to be too great for Prices Pharmacy A although Prices have played some enterprising netball in their three games last week. Defending champions Jacks OPD are likely to have too much fire power for Prices Black. Prices have not had their preferred shooting line up available for the last couple of games, which seriously diminishes their opportunities.

There were not many rebounds, however better body position and ‘boxing out’ would increase the turnover rate. Jordy was also handy through court as she was a competent ball carrier. Nicole Treweek was the worker at goal keep while Sarah Ritchie impressed at wing defence as she hassled her opposition on the outside of the circle. Waimea’s goal shoot Aliya Egan had the perfect record in the first half as she netted eight from eight, however she did not have the same success in the second half. Ashleigh Inch displayed a good

Golden girl scores NZ selection Geena Gross can officially call herself a New Zealand international. The 15 year old Nelson College for Girls defender earned herself a “dream” call up to the New Zealand Under-17 women’s football team for a three match series against Australia beginning this week. Although she has represented the New Zealand secondary school team at a tournament in Fiji, this will be Geena’s first official match for the national age group team, and all going well, it should led to a spot at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica next year. Geena says she was over the moon following her selection. “I was really excited and thinking of playing on the international stage and representing my country, it was all a huge shock,” says the former Golden Bay High School student. Geena shifted to Nelson College for Girls at the beginning of the year in a bid to push her claims for the New Zealand side. She has been involved in New Zealand Football’s National Training Centre for three years, which were generally held in Christchurch, but found it difficult just getting along to the Federation Training Centre in Nelson, as it meant tackling the Takaka hill three times a week.

Nelson Bays Royal 12th grade rep team won the Japan Cup for the first time last week.

Footballers win Japan Cup

Nelson footballer Geena Gross has made the New Zealand under 18 women's team. Photo: Phillip Rollo. As well as playing for the college side on Sunday mornings, Geena is also a member of the Nelson Suburbs Under-19 men’s side. But playing against the boys is something she’s had to deal with over the years, and Geena believes it has aided her own ability on the field. “My aggressiveness and intensity has stepped up and when I came up against the girls again I felt my speed on the ball had improved a lot. All the guys

treat you just like any other player, which is good, it makes you push yourself.” The first game against Australia will be played in Canberra on Sunday. Following the series, the Young Football Ferns will join together for another training camp in September in preparation for the Oceania Under-17 Football Championship, where New Zealand will look to qualify for the world cup.

Nelson rep football team won the Japan Cup for the first time last week. The Japan cup has been going for sixteen years and is held in New Zealand every second year and Japan the following year. This year Japanese club Hosoe sent one team and made another combined team with Mid Canterbury with Nelson Bays Royal 12th grade team coming out on top in Ashburton. Nelson Royal started with three

wins on the first day including a 3-0 win over Canterbury. Day Two saw another win against Selwyn to finish top of their pool and qualify for the semi-finals. Nelson beat Canterbury in the semi final 3-2. Nelson then faced Hibiscus Coast in the final, beating them 3-1. This is only the fourth time in sixteen years the cup has been one by a New Zealand team.
