Not even Rudolph’s nose could shine as bright as Rod Barnes did at the Ulysses Nelson Toy Run on Saturday. More than 300 motorcycle enthusiasts took to the streets of Richmond, Stoke and Nelson, fundraising and collecting toys for the region’s youth. While many dropped off their toys to the following trucks prior to the run, Rod chose to deck his motorcycle out with them. He had Santa Claus on the back too; the sleigh was obviously kept inside for the weekend. Rod was easily riding the most distinctive-looking bike on the day. Organiser Lorraine Lindsay says numbers were down slightly on previous years, but she was still amazed at the support from the public. The run started in Cambridge St, Richmond, before leading through to Trafalgar Park via Stoke. Members of the public were donating toys on the side of the road as the bikes went past. While many of the riders came from the Ulysses motorcycle club, there were also plenty of newbies on motorcycles, scooters and even one motorised bicycle. The hundreds of toys were handed over to a grateful Salvation Army at the event’s conclusion. Although Saturday’s tally was down on last year, a group of 12 came up from Hokitika to join in.
