Rocks Rd boulevard all go Andrew Board A four metre wide cycling and walking boulevard is a step closer to reality after Nelson City Council confirmed its support last week. The project will use around $6million out of the government’s old “R funding” pool as well as around $1million from NCC. The plan for a cycling and walking boulevard was approved by New Zealand Transport Agency earlier this year and councillors confirmed their support last week. The latest development means plans for the road can begin with physical work not expected to start until 2014 or 2015. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the brief for the study is for a four metre wide boulevard from the Crop and Food building all the way to Tahunanui Beach but con-
cedes there may be some “pinch points” where that is unachievable. “This project is a big step forward and it’s an opportunity we need to seize with both hands. This step will make it easier to do other things along Rocks Rd. This is a critical step to actually getting Rocks Rd as one of the most iconic waterfronts in Australasia.” The study is hoped to be finished by the end of this financial year and if agreed by both NZTA and NCC work could begin in 2014 or 2015. Aldo says once finished the boulevard will link Nelson city with Tahunanui beach and make access to it easier. “This is a flagship project not only for us but for NZTA as well so we are all very excited about how it could look and what that will mean for Nelson.”

It was galas galore over the weekend with Enner Glynn school and St Jospehs both hosting their festive community events, and there’s plenty more to come. Some 2000 people attended Enner Glynn school’s biannual gala according to organiser Sharon Rose, and
with a sum of around $26,500 raised she says it was a huge success for the school. The schools kiwiana themed event was held on Sunday and featured student kapahaka, zumba and band performances, face painting, raffles, food, drink and dancing, and the turnout was wonderful says Sharon. “It’s fantastic to see everyone here,
a lot of parents have come along to watch their children perform, or see the kiwiana art they’ve made. Everyone is just having a great time.” Sharon praised the community support for the gala, “Considering all the other events on at the moment, the turnout was just amazing, it was

an incredible amount of support from our community.” The school donates some of the gala proceeds to charity every time it is held, and this year the money will go to the Nelson Rescue Helicopter and the rest will update an old wooden playground at the school.“We want to put it towards the new playground as we are a community school. A lot of students and families use the grounds on the weekends and after school.” St Joseph’s raised $28,000 at their evening gala on Saturday night and Grove St Kindergarten raised $5000 on Sunday, with St Joseph’s principal Mike Burton saying the gala was “one of the best turnouts we’ve had”. Auckland Point School is ‘bringing country to town’ with its fair this Saturday from 11am until 3pm, and Stoke School Gala will be held that evening from 3pm until 7pm.
drivers at 130km/h Nelson police clocked “several” vehicles driving faster than 130 km per hour on the open road over the weekend as part of an operation in the lead up to Christmas. Police issued 100 infringement notices over the weekend and another five people were arrested for excess breath alcohol. But police say despite those incidents they were generally “delighted” with the response from the public to the operation which aimed to pick up people preloading before heading into the city’s bars and clubs. Senior sergeant Grant Andrews says simultaneous road checkpoints were set up on the two main arterial routes to the city
and about 1000 vehicles stopped over the course of the evening. Grant says the vast majority of people stopped were compliant and gave very positive feedback about the police presence. “People expect to see us out and stopping drivers early in the evening is a very effective way of preventing issues or crashes later in the night,” he says. In the lead up to Christmas police will continue to be highly visible on the roads and around the city’s bars and clubs. Later in the evening there were ten alcohol-related arrests in Nelson city, five of those for a breach of the liquor ban.

Church hall fails quake test Andrew Board Another prominent Nelson building has had its doors closed after it failed an earthquake safety report. Unite Church on Rutherford St decided to shut the doors on one of its buildings immediately after it received the results of the test last month. It has since moved all of its activities, including the Sunday morning service, to the smaller hall on the same site, which passed the same examination. It’s the latest in the number of Nelson buildings that have undergone earthquake reports and

failed, with many closing their doors and others receiving strengthening. Minister Paul Burton says the decision to close the building was straightforward but he isn’t certain of the church’s future as any repair work or replacement would most likely cost tens of thousands of dollars, if not more. “We couldn’t see how we could make any other decision in the current climate. There was some talk that we could continue to use it as it is safe for anything other than in a significant earthquake but we couldn’t do that so we closed it.” The church commissioned an engineering report due to the Christchurch earthquake and to get some charity after insurance premiums “skyrocketed”. The initial report gave the building a rating of 11 per cent, a building must get a rating of at least 33 per cent to pass the test. Paul says the church is getting familiar with operating out of the old hall again, decades after it moved its Sunday service out of it and into the auditorium. “It’s adequate, but much smaller and we have issues about the future. We’ve had to compress our children’s programme. But we’re not about buildings, we use buildings. But in saying that everyone likes to have a home and for it to be nice.” Unite Church has been at its Rutherford St site since 1882. Meanwhile in Richmond, the A&P Association will not reveal whether its 89 year old grandstand has passed or failed an earthquake safety review, less than one month before its annual A&P Show. Opus has confirmed the review has been conducted but would not disclose the results, as it would breach the client’s privacy. Association property manager and treasurer John Harwood says “there is nothing the public should know about. At this stage we’re not reporting on it anywhere.”

But the bar has been set and it will be very difficult to match it.” Tracey says the overriding message of the whole campaign has been the community working together. “We’ve led it but it’s been the people of Nelson that have supported it and donated to help this cause so I think the whole region
should be proud of themselves.” Shane agreed: “When you hold your bucket out it’s bloody pleasing to know that people were heading towards us knowing what we were doing, what we were representing and had money ready. To come out with $5000 from four street appeals blew us away.” Donations from the community for the auction at the quiz night also helped raised the total with a Richmond couple donating a brand new 42 inch television which went for $560.

Aquaculture moves onshore Phillip Rollo The Nelson owners of the country’s first land-based fish farm are eyeing up a lucrative Asian market, both in Auckland and abroad. New Zealand Land Based Aquaculture unveiled its threetank reticulated fish farm which houses 6000 grass carp – believed to be the third most popular eating fish in the world. All 6000 of the fish have been sold to New Zealand Waterways, which uses its weed-eating ability to help restore lakes and rivers. But co-owner Robert Hutton says there is already interest from the largest Asian supermarket and restaurant chain in Auckland and he was currently in the process of opening a second fish farm in Appleby. To meet huge demand, the intention was to have franchises throughout the country. “We’ve already got substantial markets for New Zealand Waterways, which is obviously not for food. Within the next 18 months to two years we’d like to be selling 100 tonne of live product into New Zealand and three times that into Australia,” he says. “It is quite exciting but we’ve done our homework. We’ve got all the parts to the puzzle in place.” The benefit of land-based aquaculture is the ability to grow a large number of fish in a very

they should “go catch criminals for once.” There were some Facebook users who supported the police’s campaign with Louise Miller saying she was “embarrassed” by the comments. Detective Inspector Geoffrey Jago says police are aware of the negative comments that get posted on the Facebook page and while this is “disappointing”, it is not the role of police to unnecessarily limit the community’s right to free speech. He noted that the site was moderated and that it was a “useful tool” for people who did not follow the news. Internet safety expert John Parsons says it was common for organisations to receive negative feedback on their social networking sites. However, this was the first time he had heard of this activity being directed at the police. “There’s something about the technology and the separation that allows people to say these things and to be honest, a lot of it is just junk,” he says.

Would you tell a police offer that they are “a revenue gathering mofo” or that you don’t pay taxes for them to “hound” your “ass”? Maybe you wouldn’t to their faces but these are just two examples of what the Nelson Police has to publicly deal with on its Facebook page. This month’s announcement that the police would begin a “lock or knock” campaign, urging members of the public to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables from view, hoping to prevent a growing trend in theft, attracted 74 comments on its social networking website. But the attitude from some of the Nelson-Tasman public may come as a surprise with a handful of Facebook users clearly against the idea of police checking to see if cars are locked and have no valuables within sight. Lucan Jay wrote: “Go do something productive that’s what you guys all tell us, might want to do it yourselves and catch criminals just saying (sic).” Lucan was not the only person who thought the police were wasting time. Georgia Doughtery wrote: “Meanwhile people are gettin kidnapd and raped and murdered and they waste their time f**king around. The Nelson Weekly Oct. 30 edition headlined the controversy over rapidly escalating rates in Nelson and Tasman. The scale of the increases are such that low-income people will soon be pushed out of their homes. Tasman District Council at least has been spending its funds primarily on infrastructure; Nelson City Council has no excuse for its reckless spending on sculptures, events and other noncore items that have nothing to do with infrastructure. Next year, voters should look carefully at who they vote for in local body elections, rather than voting merely on name recognition. The big spenders need to be booted out. Dan McGuire, Nelson. Kind cafes donate food to charity Andrew Board Instead of tossing her leftover savouries, pies and sandwiches in the bin at the end of a busy day, Kiwi Café owner Prue Hayes throws them in a plastic bag and donates them to a local charity. Prue took over Kiwi Café – formerly the Rooftop Coffee Shop – in June and soon after joined the trend practiced by many Nelson cafes and bakeries of donating left over food to charities at the end of the day. She says she’s aware of several other businesses that do the same and it’s a good way to finish the day. “I don’t have a lot to giveaway but it feels really good doing it and it’s going to someone who’s going to appreciate it,” she says. Prue started the regular dropoffs soon after taking over the café. “My daughter came up from Christchurch when we first took over the café in June and a few of us were doing the cleanup at the end of the day and when we got to the pie warmer I thought ‘oh, there is too much in here’. “My daughter said ‘what are we going to do with all this mum?’ and suggested taking it to the women’s refuge.” The next day Prue was in Liquorland on Vanguard St and got chatting with owner Gavin Snowball about the men across the road at the men’s shelter and decided it

On her way home Prue drops a bag of leftovers to Gavin who then takes them across the road to the shelter. “I don’t do it every night, just when there’s a few leftovers and I’ve been told they appreciate it so that makes me feel good." Women’s refuge manager Trudi Brand says they often get food donated from various
cafes and bakeries in Nelson. “It’s a really nice thought from them, sometimes, depending on circumstances, we can’t take it but when we get bread donated, stuff like that, it’s fantastic.” Prue says going out of her way to drop off the leftovers is much better than watching good food go to waste. "We are proud of our food so would hate to see it not eaten."

Local club to host poker run Local motorcycle club Route 6 is hosting its annual poker run this month. The Richmond-based club hosted its first poker run last year which attracted 108 bikes with many husband and wife teams taking part. Route 6 club captain Richard Eddington says the ride is a great day out and a chance to meet some fellow motorbike lovers while taking in the region’s beauty. “Last year was a really good day and as long as the weather is nice we hope to have a few more bikes than last year.” The run is being held on Saturday, November 17 with registration from 10am
at Harrington’s Beer Café in Richmond (formally Robbie’s Bar and Bistro) and will finish at the Sprig & Fern in Richmond with a barbeque for all participants. Cost is $10 per person. Richard says the prizes are “very, very good” and all proceeds will be donated to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust. “The route is secret but we make sure it’s a nice ride and one that everyone will enjoy. The whole day is about having a good time and everyone catching up,” says Richard. For more information you can call Richard on 027 432 2566.
Salisbury School takes legal action A court case appears to be the only thing that can save Salisbury School in Richmond from closing for good. The Salisbury School board filed for judicial review proceedings in the High Court in Wellington against the Minister of Education’s decision to close the school, yesterday. The school has also sought an interim order that ministry officials take no further steps to shift the girls and close the school in December until the legality of the minister’s decision is determined by the court. The move comes after Minister of Education Hekia Parata confirmed last week that she proposes to close the residential school, moving the all-female roll to the co-education Halswell Residential School in Christchurch. Board chairperson Helen McDonnell says it is very unfortunate that they Helen McDonnell. have to go down the path of legal action. “But we have no choice if we wish to ensure the safety of our students, and that there is sufficient provision of appropriate education for their needs,” she says. The final decision came just one week after Salisbury School principal Brenda Ellis and three board members met with the Minister of Education in Wellington. Salisbury School employs more than 60 staff and cares for around 65 students, with another 30 based in its outreach programme. Helen says that as proceedings had now been filed, the board will make no further comments until the matter had been determined by the court.

More than 100 entries were received for the Coupland’s shout, via the Nelson Weekly Facebook page. Jill says it’s the second win she’s had in the past month after winning some concert tickets, but she’s won nothing before that. “It’s awesome, I called everyone I know to let them know. That’s how excited I was,” she says. Jill says her two children will be back in Nelson for Christmas, and coupled with her ten siblings and their families, need a lot of food for Christmas. “So I think I’ll save the voucher

Volunteering for straight teeth

The bite of $6000 orthodontic work could be decreased to just three figures in exchange for volunteer work for local families unable to directly afford the treament. The New Zealand Association of Orthodontists last week announced that the Wish for a Smile Trust will take applications from children aged between 11 and 18 years old, helping ease the financial burden of those in need of urgent orthodontic work. Sonia Malpas of Nelson Orthodontics, the only clinic in the Top of the South participating in the initiative, says this will be hugely beneficial for children that might be teased at school. “The ones whose life might be really affected and could lead to other problems, the real serious cases, they’re the ones who will benefit,” she says. Sonia says orthodontic treatment has become significantly more popular in recent years because dentists in this era do “everything they can” to save a tooth. In previous generations, teeth were taken out and replaced with false teeth. It is estimated that 20 per cent of New Zealand children require some form of orthodontic work. Dr Andrew Lush says it is likely to cost families around $800 on top of

Toys needed for annual toy fair
The Stoke-Tahunanui Rotary Club is urging locals to round up their old toys and put them to good use – in the third annual Toy Fair. The Toy Fair is back for 2012 but in a different venue, moving from Founders Heritage Park to the Nelson Musical Theatre, right next door. The success of last year’s toy fair was fantastic say organisers, with hundreds of toys flying out the door but it does leave another big gap for this year’s stock. So the group is encouraging people to review their toy boxes and closets and to drop off any suitable toys or puzzles to any Summit Real Estate office in Richmond, Stoke, Motueka or Nelson or to the windmill at Founders. If you wish to have them picked up just phone Barry on 547 6366. Slightly damaged toys are welcome as Rotary members may be able to repair them. The Toy Fair this year is a joint event between the Stoke-Tahunanui Rotary Club and the Nelson Musical Theatre. All money raised will go towards supporting Rotary Youth Projects and the Nelson Musical Theatre. It will be held on December 1 and 2, kicking off straight after the Santa Parade in Nelson.

Diabetes sneaks up on local man Sinead Ogilvie
Type 2 diabetes means Gordon Gray of Nelson now has a lifetime of constant caution over what he eats. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.
If you’d never hesitate to reach for a chocolate biscuit, and think keeping up to date with doctors' appointments is last on your list of priorities, think again, says Gordon Gray of Nelson, because that’s exactly the type of behaviour that can lead you down the fast track to diabetes, a life sentence that now affects him every day. After feeling dizzy, tired and thirsty on a trip to Australia three years ago, Gordon, 60, was hospitalised and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, amongst other health issues. Gordon’s body developed a dangerous inability to regulate its blood sugar levels, with consequences such as deteriorating health, limb amputation and organ failure all possibilities should he ignore it, and he’s not alone with statistics from Diabetes New Zealand showing that 208,000 New Zealanders currently have diabetes, and in less than a decade, that figure is set to double. Daily medication, caution over what to eat and how
much to eat are non-negotiable for Gordon now, and he like all diabetes sufferers, faces serious illness if he doesn’t keep his blood sugar levels at a balanced level. Gordon didn’t do anything out of the ordinary to develop diabetes, in fact he says, most middle aged men would probably consider his life to be much like their own, socialising, indulging in a sweet tooth and not keeping on top of his weight. “I just put it down to being middle aged, but now I can see the things I was doing weren’t helping my health,” he says. Gordon says while you don’t have to be a marathon runner, “a good diet and a reasonable amount of exercise can keep diabetes at bay.” Diabetes Awareness week kicks off on November 13, and Gordon says he wants others to know they can change the outcome of their health by making changes for the better. “Make the small changes now, it’s far better than having diabetes for life I can assure you."

Nelson band seeks career kickstart Having just opened for YouTube sensations The Make Believe, Nelson three-piece band Little Oceans is hoping the internet can shoot themselves to stardom as well. Little Oceans, which is made up of brothers Josh and Sam Edmonds, and vocalist Matthew Johnston, have entered two demos on The Audience – a website that gives a $10,000 NZ On Air-funded grant to the band with the most votes each month. Focus Harder, the band’s second unreleased song to feature on the website currently sits inside the top three for the November charts and they’re urging Nelson to get behind them and vote. The grant will go towards filming a music video and recording an album. “Going from recording every song ourselves to going into a studio and actually seeing how they do it prop-
erly would be such an awesome experience,” says Josh, who admits he has been spamming his friends on Facebook, telling them to vote. “At the end of the day we can win $10,000 so it’s worth it.” The trio played their first live performance in Nelson since leaving its previous name as Recommended By Your Mum, last Monday night. They opened for The Make Believe, a Christchurch pop punk trio that is now based in the United States and has amassed more than 3,000,000 YouTube views. Josh says a large element of being in a band is the promotional side, and the popularity of social networking sites makes it the easiest option to capture an audience. “When it comes to online, Facebook is huge right now so you have to make the most of it.” To vote, visit www.theaudience.co.nz and search Little Oceans.

A teenage ballroom dancer trains alone and is unable to compete until she finds a male partner. Victoria Hillman, 17, has been dancing since she was three years old. She first began with ballet, jazz and contemporary before realising her potential in both ballroom and latin over the past two years. Having competed at the Australian Ballroom-Latin Championship at the start of the year, everything came to a standstill when her dance partner decided to call it quits. Victoria, who attends Garin College, admits male dancers are hard to come by all over the region and knew as soon as he quit how hard it would be to find a replacement. “I knew it would be hard but I hoped someone would come along. But there’s just no one that I can find,” says Victoria. “There’s always a shortage of guys compared to girls. They’d just rather play rugby than dance I guess.” Ideally, Victoria is after someone with experience in dance and is aged between 15 and 20 years old. During the dance calendar, Victoria would travel to Christchurch and Auckland as well as competing locally. She trains around three times a week. If she is unable to find a partner, Victoria could be forced to move back to another form of dancing. Local business to give away $1000 cash Christmas is the time for giving but one local business has taken that to the extreme, giving away $1000 cash this Christmas. Tasman Auto Electrics in Richmond is running a Christmas Cracker competition where Nelson Weekly readers can cut out an entry form from the paper (on page 13) and take it along with a non-perishable food item or new toy to leave under the Christmas tree. All entries go into the draw to win the cash. The competition runs for six weeks and there is a $100 restaurant voucher to give away each week. At the end of the competition the overall winner will receive $1000 cash and all the food and toys will be donated to the Salvation Army. Tasman Auto Electrics owner Dawn Rameka says she was keen to run a promotion that fitted with its strong community spirit. “We wanted to do something nice for the community to say thanks for the support throughout the year and I was planning a promo anyway so I thought ‘why not combine the two?’”
Getting ready for the Christmas Cracker competition at Tasman Auto Electrics are from left; Maci and Lauren Rameka-iti, Bianca Beard, Dawn Rameka and Myfanwy Beard. Photo: Andrew Board. Dawn says she rang the Salvation Army and found out what they needed and designed the promotion around that. “There is a big need and they said there’s never too much so we thought we’d do what we can.”
The big prize will be drawn on Monday December 17. To drop off your entry form and food item or toy, simply visit Tasman Auto Electrics on Poutama St, off Gladstone Rd in Richmond.

Big beach cleanup this weekend
Hundreds of Nelsonians will be carrying out a spring clean of Tasman Bay beaches this Saturday in the third annual Big Beach Cleanup. Rubbish is cleared from around 300 kilometres of shoreline between Abel Tasman National Park and Cable Bay in the Big Beach Cleanup, organised by the Department of Conservation in partnership with Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Nelmac. Volunteer groups are still sought to clear rubbish from four of 51 beach-clean sections. The four are classed as more difficult, requiring people with reasonable capability and fitness and in one case a boat. The four sections are the Nelson Marina, Pepin Island, the Motueka River mouth and the Mariri estuary coastline. Any groups that can take on these sections should contact DOC’s Motueka area office on 528 1810. In the event of very bad weather this Saturday, the beach cleanup will be postponed till the following day, Sunday 11 November. Organisers will contact team leaders directly if the day is to change.

New technique for advertisers Ever wondered what on earth these scrambled squares are? You may have seen them on street posters, stuck on cars, in a magazine or even your local community newspaper. In fact more and more advertisers in Nelson Weekly are using QR codes in their ads but for many of our readers it looks like a jumbled up square of mess and we’ve had people comment to us that it must be a mistake. It’s far from that. A QR code is like a barcode and when scanned with a smartphone or ipad directs the user to a website. Users of a smartphone have to download an app that allows them to scan the QR code and be directed to more

Advertisers use them to allow people interested in their product or service to learn more by going to their site. Another example of its use is a local artist who has a QR code stuck to his public work so if people like his art and want to find out more they can simply scan the code and be directed to his website. The codes are extremely easy to scan and can even be done while on the move. According to Wikipedia, “the
QR Code was invented in Japan by the Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave in 1994 to allow components to be scanned at high speed”. Local businesses such as O2B Healthy, The Car Company and a2b eCycles have all used a QR code on adverts in the Nelson Weekly recently. Business manager of the Car Company, Tracey Black says it adds an extra dimension to their advertising and allows people to quickly access their website.

RSA ready to remember WWI The Nelson RSA is inviting all Nelsonians to help them commemorate the end of World War I, a war in which 88 men from Nelson city alone were killed. New district president of the RSA, Derek Nees, says the day – known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Sunday – is the largest commemoration of the war in Europe but hasn’t been well attended in New Zealand because of Anzac Day. “The crowds here have been small but seeing that it’s the centenary decade of the events
of the first world war I think it’s important that we have these things coming to the public fore.” The armistice that ended the “great war” was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, after four years of horrific fighting. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says the service only lasts for about half an hour and will start shortly before 11am at Anzac Park this Sunday. The guest speaker this year is Nelson College old boy and veteran Colonel Bob Upton.

That SBS Bank is mutual and owned by its members was a major factor for Lisa Tolmie when deciding to embark on a career change from one of the big three banks to a smaller family orientated banking institution. Lisa brings 15 years of banking experience to SBS Bank, which was founded 143 years ago, and says the independence of the bank is why she chose to work there. “I like to think that working for an institution that exists solely for the benefit of its members and not shareholders accurately reflects my own values when dealing with customers.” SBS successfully rejected an attempted takeover from Westpac in 1990 with its members voting overwhelmingly to remain mutual. A customer owned focus has led SBS Bank to be voted New Zealand’s ‘Financial Institution of the Year’ for 2011 in the ‘Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Awards’ and Lisa is determined to win the award again with her collegues in 2012. “Community involvement, which is a priority for me, is one of SBS Bank’s guiding principles and is reflected in the products which they offer”. The latest offering the ‘Luxury Lodge’ promotion provides luxury accommodation to the value of $1000 if a loan is drawn by 31st March 2013, benefitting both customers and lodges alike. Lisa looks forward to having a chat about your banking needs. Do you have a wee problem? If you ignore it - it may become a bigger one! Don’t let pelvic floor issues limit the way you live your life. With Robyn Hollis
November 24: Horticulture section of the Nelson A&P show at the Redwood Hall well worth a look at some amazing flowers and plants grown by some of our best gardeners.
I hope you all had a great Labour weekend. We were so lucky with the weather and at our place it was just as well, as we had up to 12 folk staying in 2 houses and it was the first time we had been able to all eat out on the deck and really appreciate the garden. I got to enjoy being a Nana for a few days which was wonderful. There is really something precious about being handed a small hungry bundle, a nappy and breakfast food at 7am with a mumbled “he’s all yours Mum. I’m going back to bed!!” The other really neat part is when, after about 3 hours, fed, changed, played with and cuddled, he demands to go back to Mum (although we have the equipment there are just some things Nanas can’t do….) and we can sit back with our coffee in bliss and just enjoy the moments. Talking about Growing Things I do have to let you know that my children are growing yet another boy – due in April. We just cannot seem to do girls in our family, me being the last one and that is over 60 years ago. Enough of all that and back to the garden; which is really neverending at this time of the year but also very rewarding as everything is looking so good. I spent 5 hours or so yesterday weeding and discovering perennials that were lurking in places that I had forgotten about. The hostas are all coming up and looking great and most have put on weight over the winter (like someone else I could mention….) and are really looking full and lovely. I thought we could talk a bit about what to grow to encourage beneficial insects into the garden. Bees are so important and I am noticing more of these guys around this year. Planting lavenders in spots by the
Tips
Thisks wee
Rhododendron “Trudy Webster” one of my favorites. vege garden and borage, planted in pots so you can move it around the garden, is a great way to attract bees. They also love beans and fruit tree flowers and most flowers that are white, purple and blue (my scabiosa under the roses is alive with bees) are the colours they will go for. Parsley, dill and fennel, when left to flower encourages beneficial insects into the garden as do marigolds and calendulas (tagetes) . These not only attract bees but they also produce a substance that kills soil nematodes, the tiny eelworms that eat the roots of plants and cause havoc around the garden. Cottage garden plants such as Tansy, achillea, echinops and queen annes lace encourage ladybirds and hoverflies. The
larvae of these guys eat aphids so they will be fat and full in most gardens from now on. Encouraging beneficial insects into the garden is not an exact science so just experiment and find out what works best for your situation. Important dates for gardeners to remember in November. November 8–11: Hunters Garden Marlborough – Love Nature. November 17: Nelson Growables Garden Fair – Founders Park November 17 & 18: Nelson Horticultural Society’s – Rose and Iris Show – held at the Granary, Founders park in conjunction with Nelson Growables fair.
• You can start to plant out your tomato seedlings now. Only select the strongest plants and keep some back to plant in 2-3 week’s time. Always put the stakes in first so as not to damage the roots. • Direct sow beans in most areas nowalso sweet corn, beetroot and lettuce for a constant supply. • Check plants for whitefly, aphid and caterpillar. You can spray with neem oil and neem soap if necessary. (Neem soap is available at Trade Aid in Hardy St). • Trim passionfruit vines now that the frosts have passed (we hope!) • Start hoeing up soil around the first potatoes to sprout. • If you cannot stand to see the sad looking daffodil leaves falling over everything you can cut them back now but ensure you feed them with bulb food as well. • Now is the time to divide your hostas – I know, they are really looking good but the fact that they are in their strongest growing phase is the reason to do this now. Also, you can see what you are taking. Keep up the good work and enjoy your efforts – until next time….

employment and providing training opportunities early on before students leave school. The model is designed to fit both the student and the employer. “Giving the students the bigger picture involved with a job or career sets them on a pathway to future employment. Sometimes what a student thought they may have wanted turns out to be completely different after a placement. That is a valuable lesson to learn, especially prior to applying for a job or a tertiary course. The employers report back to the student after each placement as to the suitability and performance. While Andrew says this can sometimes be a reality check for students, it’s an important element of the programme as it shows the real side of employment to students who haven’t worked before. Andrew says the programme is great for any student, but is particularly suitable for students who want to do a trade, or gain an apprenticeship. The experience and assessment gained can give them the edge over other applicants when applying for an apprenticeship. 18 year old Ashleigh Crighton agrees and says the skills she gained while on placement with the Rutherford Hotel

NBS gives car to local charity CrimeWatch Nelson Building Society announced the winner of the 2012 Win a Car Target Account Promotion yesterday, the Motueka Community Patrol. The group is affiliated with Community Patrols New Zealand and its mission is to reduce crime and build safer communities. "It is the first time that a not for profit group has won this competition and we couldn't be happier", says NBS general manager Ken Beams.
The new car is a 2012 Subaru XV Crossover, which is a new compact 4WD model. The group was informed of the win by way of a phone call to Phil Donaldson, partner at Fletcher Vautier Moore, who is involved with the patrol. "I couldn't believe it", says Phil. "We have been fundraising hard for a car as we currently need to drive to Richmond every Friday collect a TDC vehicle, returning
it Sunday night. Winning this car will just make it so much easier for our patrol volunteers.” The Target Account Promotion is run throughout the NBS branch network so the chance of such a small community group winning is slim. This year NBS celebrates 150 years in business. The mutually owned building society offers a full range of banking products to its clients.

Outdoor expo ready for action Andrew Board The first ever outdoor recreation expo will be held in Nelson this weekend. Organised by Sport Tasman, the expo will feature more than 45 exhibitors from around Nelson and New Zealand all with the aim of getting people into the outdoors and doing it safely. Exhibitors include retailers, commercial operators, government agencies and local clubs. Dave Tippett, of Sport Tasman, says the expo has enjoyed strong support from those in the industry and is confident of a good turnout. “The expo is for anyone and everyone, a complete novice to the enthusiast. It’s an awesome opportunity for those who haven’t been involved in outdoor recreation before to come down and speak to the people in the know, speak to the experts and maybe find a new passion.” Dave says the expo stemmed from the outdoor recreation forum that Sport Tasman runs. “Basically I saw there was funding available for the outdoor recreation side of safety and I got together with the people from Safe at the Top, we threw around some ideas and the expo came out.” They then teamed up with the Mountain Safety Council and the Adventure Smart Outdoor Safety codes to help push the safety aspect of the outdoors and worked on attracting exhibitors. He says anything outdoors – from fishing and boating to tramping and mountain biking to kayaking and surf rescue – will be on display, as

Nelson driver clocks 254 km/hour Phillip Rollo It took one competitor 14 hours just to get to the start of The Rock FM Motueka Dragway but only 7.994 seconds to get to the end of it. Invercargill’s Bruce Smith clocked 149 miles per hour to take out the modified class over Nelson’s John Gourdie. John managed to clock a faster time on the airport runway with the speed gun reading 158 mph, or 254 kilometres per hour. John, who is also the president of the Nelson Drag Racing Association, was just pleased racing got underway with heavy rain bucketing down in Nelson at the same time the sun shone brightly above Motueka. But the weather wasn’t fine for most of the morning with one driver having to bring out his helicopter just to dry the tarmac. “We were very, very lucky to get that day in. When we got there at 7:30am it was drizzling,” says John. John says it was “great to see” Bruce make the trip north, despite him having some engine troubles on his second run. Steve Bennett took out the super sedan class in 10.455 seconds, ahead of runner

Ross Wood ran 11.075 seconds to take out the super street class with Gordon Smith’s 11.540 seconds being the second best time in that class. Craig Wray was the only competition bike rider to get under 10
seconds, clocking in at 9.603 seconds with Mark Pahl second with 10.108 seconds. Kyle Dykes took out the Richard Woodall Memorial Challenge in the modified bike class with Parrish Hurley second. Bryce Baker won the Ian Griffith Motors Hot
Rod Challenge running 15.062 seconds. Kale McQuade won the grudge class with the quickest reaction time of the day. His reaction time was a mere 0.404 seconds. The next event on the Nelson Drag Racing calendar will be held on December 1.
Nelson College wins 7s comp Nelson College scored 244 unanswered points to claim the Tasman Secondary Schools Rugby Sevens Championship and book a place at the BNZ Condor 7s tournament. Nelson were so dominant at the regional tournament that the school’s B team actually finished second, with Waimea College oddly entering a team without the majority of its top players. Golden Bay High School finished third overall. Marlborough Boys College, Nayland College,
Garin College and Motueka High School did not enter teams. Nelson College finished second at the national tournament last year with Steven Soper going on to make the tournament team. The BNZ Condor 7s will be held in Auckland on December 2 with the regional winners’ flights and accommodation being paid for as part of their prize. Sunday’s tournament was played at Trafalgar Park in Nelson.

Nelson sailors get on the podium Winds at 30 knots halted half of the weekends racing for Nelson’s young sailors on Saturday, but despite the setback the local club members featured highly on the results table for the regional regatta. Although they missed out on the top spots in the P-Class Championship, the overall result was pleasing for Nelson’s competitors, with some getting up on the podium on Sunday. The Nelson Marlborough Regional Championship incorporating the South Island P Class Championship and Starling Traveller Series was held at the Nelson Yacht Club and featured sailors from the Nelson region and Christchurch. Nelson’s Callum Foley-Logan took out first place in the Laser Radials, and Nelson sailor Laura Harding won her Laser 4.7s class. Nicholas Mellor won the 4.20s class while Max Meffan got close to claiming the Optimist class with his second placing, and local seniors Daryl Way and John Bailey were awarded first place in the Flying Dutchman, and John Bailey in the A Class. Nelson Yacht Club Commodore Dave Gibb says he was impressed with the way the young sailors handled themselves in challenging conditions, and
Max Meffan, 12, and Isabelle Harding, 13, had a successful day of sailing on Sunday during the Nelson Marlborough Regional Championships held at the Nelson Yacht Club. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. said the turnout for the regatta was fantastic. “We’re pleased with the turnout, it’s been one of the biggest regattas that’s been attended by Nelson and Marlborough sailors over the last
few years," says Dave. The Nelson Yacht Club is gearing up to host the 2013 P-Class National Championship which will be held in January 2013.

Nelson's Ryan Edwards lines up a catch to remove the last Marlborough wicket at Saxton Oval on Sunday. Photo: Andrew Board.
Nelson battles to beat Marlborough After removing Marlborough for a paltry 120 runs Nelson went to lunch all high fives and smiles, but lunch couldn't have sat too well with many as Nelson teetered on the brink of disaster early in its chase. The Newman Shield representative 50 over clash on a low and slow Saxton Oval pitch looked to be all over after Marlborough were taken apart by the Nelson bowlers and fielders.
But Nelson's openers both went for a duck and the rest of the top order – many of whom were in great form for their club's the day before – weren't too far behind. Dan Cooper, Marty Kain, Grey Hay and Ryan Edwards all failed to fire. But captain BJ Barnett and New Zealand under 20 representative Connor Neymes resurrected the innings, guiding Nelson to 53.
Ricky Edwards joined Connor at the crease after BJ was given out leg before wicket and after a quick fire 34 it was up to Matt Macquet and Connor to finish off the visitors and give Nelson an important early season win. Man of the match was undoubtedly Connor who top scored with 42. Marty and Luke Toynbee were the top Nelson bowlers, taking three wickets apiece.

Axemen prepare for championship chop Sinead Ogilvie

Nelson’s Axemen are gearing up for a championship chop off this weekend, with the King of the Forest Loggers Sports weekend providing the perfect opportunity to hone their skills. Close to two hundred enthusiasts watched the logging events held at Higgins Park in Pigeon Valley on the weekend, with the chockermans race drawing fierce competition between loggers and their counterparts as they battled on a timed course that included chainsaw assembly and wood splitting. Heading off five other teams to win the final, team Fulton Hogan took out the title with their 4min 22 sec time, a surprising feat said team member Matt Riordan after the team, who aren’t loggers by trade, came second to last in last year’s challenge. “I think the fact we beat the profes-

Phillip Rollo The Challenge Cup will be up for grabs when the Nelson Tigers host the Palmerston North Panthers this weekend, but the locals will be competing for more than just superstock silverware. The manager of the Nelson Tigers, Daryl Peterson, says a pool of eight drivers are likely to take part in the four upcoming teams races, which means the five penned in for this Saturday could effectively be on trial for the NZ Teams Champs in February and the Teams Nationals in March. Jared Gray, Carey and Shane Harwood, Ian Clayworth and Blair Cunningham form an experienced quintet and Daryl says home track advantage should count for plenty. “We’ve had a pretty good success rate in the past against them in Nelson and we are the current holders of the annual cup,” he says. “Blair and Shane are probably the youngest but I’d hate to think how many years of experience we have here.” Daryl says the Panthers are the easiest team to plan for because of their overall strengths. “We know their guys are strong and we know their roles and how they race. It’s one of the easier teams to race, although that doesn’t mean we’re going to beat them all of the time.” Action began the Tahuna Holiday Park Speedway two weeks ago and this season will definitely be influenced by a heavy superstock feel. As well as a number of teams fixtures, Nelson will host the New Zealand Superstock Championship, which is widely regarded as the top individual speedway championship in the country. The Tigers will head to Wellington on November 17 to take on the Wildcats in the first race of the Carter Cup series before facing the Glen Eagles in Christchurch two weeks later for the McCall Trophy. The Wildcats will then make the trip across the Cook Strait for the final Carter Cup race on December 8.
sionals surprised us a bit.” Organiser Rex Kelly says it was great to see the loggers having a good time together over the course of the day. “It’s just great to get the loggers together who work in the bush all day and see them enjoying themselves, and getting competitive.” Nelson’s axemen had a chance to prepare for their championship bout to be held this weekend when they displayed standing chops and underhand events throughout the day. Brightwater axeman Rhys Hornecastle said he was enjoying himself and saw it as a “bit of a training day”, for the coming weekend’s competition which will see Nelson play host to members from the New South Wales wood chopping team. Four world champion axemen will attend the event held at The Speights Ale House on Saturday, including Adam Lowe, a former Nelsonian.
