Nelsonians live longer
A new report has found that Nelsonians have a higher life expectancy, are more active and less likely to smoke than the average Kiwi. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has released a profile of the region’s health and well-being ahead of a series of community engagement meetings which start today. The figures show people in the region have
a life expectancy of 82.2 years - a year longer than the average New Zealander. The top of the south population is also older than the national average with eight per cent being over 75 years, compared with six per cent across the country. It also shows that 67.1 percent of Nelson and Marlborough residents are physically active compared to the national 52.4 per cent, and that 12.8 per cent of us are daily

smokers compared to 13.7 per cent of Kiwis. The report discovered that the leading cause of preventable death in the region is coronary disease, and that youth aged 15 to 24 years in the region are at higher risk of injury and emergency department attendance than their national counterparts. There will be five community engagement
meetings across the region throughout October, and members of the public are invited to attend. The Board Chair Jenny Black and Chief Executive Chris Fleming will present on the findings and the strategic planning for the region’s services. Information on dates and times can be found at www.nmdhb.govt.nz/ communityengagement.aspx
Support for Red Peak, but mayor wants silver fern Andrew Board Atawhai’s Paul Willis likes it so much he flies it above his house. City councillor Matt Lawrey thinks it’s so great he is planning a community event in support of it. But the “red peak” flag hasn’t won support from the city’s mayor who says she’d like to see
a silver fern on our national flag. “If I think about what we do with the flag, how we use it, if I’m going to stand at a rugby game and I’m going to wave a flag, I know what I’d feel more passionate about waving.” There are now five options for a new flag that will go to a national referendum next month.
