Santa not the only star of parade Nelson put on a top show for the visiting Father Christmas on Sunday, with an estimated 15,000 people showing to greet the jolly fat man. The annual Santa Parade attrached 60 entries which took about an hour to roll through the centre of town and finish up at Founders Heritage Park. Organiser Huup Waagen says he was told around 15,000 people showed for the parade. “It was a big parade, a lot bigger than years gone by and it went really well.” Entrants ranged from trail motorbike riders to girls dressed as elfs. Huup says the event went off without a hitch but took months of organising to get it so smooth. “I was pretty relaxed on the day but we had put in the hard work and the reaction of the people on the street was worth it.” While the highlights were too many to mention, the Non-Stop trail riders, who took turns jumping over each other, and Santa seemed to get the biggest roars of approval from the crowd. More than 450 bikers braved the hot temperatures on the weekend for the 25th anniversary of the Ulysses Motorcycle Club’s annual toy run. Bikers arrived on all sorts of transport from trikes to scooters and even some on Harleys. With the gift of a toy to the Salvation Army Christmas gift fund, they set off through the streets of Nelson where the locals came out in numbers to look and cheer the bikers along. Also present was Warehouse Kiwi who was able to present over $1500 worth of toys to the cause. This was from proceeds of plastic bag sales throughout the year from the Motueka branch. Spokesperson for the Ulysses Motorcycle Club Nan Ward says they were pleased with the turnout. “It was about the same as last year, but you would swear it Seventy eight year-old Bevan Eyles, of Stoke, with three was twice that on the road when good mates, Phil Rundle, his grandson Lachie Drummond, you saw them all,” she says. and Bevan’s Sunbeam. Wakapuaka residents have been told the smell coming from the area’s treatment plant won’t go away any time soon. Nelson City Council staff and the contractor running Wakapuaka’s Nelson Wastewater Treatment Plant have worked throughout the weekend to identify the cause of the odour first reported on Friday. Alec Louverdis, of NCC, says the smell has been caused by the changeover of algae in the ponds and record-breaking hot temperatures throughout November, but he stressed the ponds new infrastructure should be coping with these issues. “We extend a sincere apology to residents for the smell. Unfortunately there is no overnight cure, but remedial actions including starting the trickling filter and seeding good algae into the ponds to aid recovery are in full swing.” The plant is now in breach of one of its resource consent conditions, which requires no objectionable odour past State Highway 6. Environmental Inspections will decide what action, if any, is taken against NCC as consent holder of the breach.

RETAIN MOISTURE!!

Nelson schools have swung in behind those affected by the Pike River Mine disaster, raising money, sending man power and even writing songs for the families. In the past week, Hampden St School has sent teachers to relieve at Greymouth classrooms. Hampden St principal, Don McLean says it is important to help out in the time of need and he had teachers from several Nelson schools queuing up to help out. At Clifton Terrace, student Grace Cumming, 9, decided to try and raise some money after watching scenes from the disaster on television. She, with the help of three friends, came up with the idea of a coin trail, asked permission from teach-

ers, organised it and watched it bring in $500 for the cause. Two other Clifton Terrace students, Billy and Sam Twanley, held a stall where they sold toys and flowers and raised $78. At Broadgreen, Cameron Thomas, 13, was so moved he wrote a song in tribute to the 29 dead miners and sung it at the schools assembly. He says he felt for the families and wanted to do something to help. “It was pretty sad writing it but I was happy because I was doing something about it.” This is on top of support offered by Nelson City Council, Nelson police, Nelson St John, Nelson Fire Service and other many other local groups and individuals.

Nelson Airport Ltd Chief Executive Kaye McNabb describes the launch of Air Asia X as “ the best thing that’s happened for tourism in the South Island in many years.” The service will put a potential customer base of billions just one stop away from Christchurch, with Air Asia having direct connections through Kualar

Lumpar to India China, throughout Asia and into the UK and Europe at a price that is predicted to bring around 37,000 passengers in its first year. “Nelson Airport Ltd is actively working with Christchurch Airport’s marketing team to identify opportunities for this area and the Chief Executive of Air Asia, Azran Osman Rani, has already

been issued with a personal invitation to visit Nelson and experience this region for himself,” says Kate. Nelson Airport will be working with Nelson Tasman Tourism to review the passenger type statistics available from the Air Asia team to identify a target market and promotional opportunities for this region.

Nelson preschool bucks women-only trend Andrew Board

Finding a man working in early childhood education is about as hard to do as keep up with a two year old – but one Nelson centre has not one, but three men on its staff. Glen Hersey started at Bridge St Early Learning Centre about 12 years ago and he says at the time there was a bit of a stigma around men working in the sector but that perception has changed and he is rapt to now have another two male colleagues. “It’s great having men in this environment, I don’t think we do anything better or differently to the other teachers but it just provides that balance for kids.” Nationwide there are 18,112 early childhood education teachers, only 285 are male. Former engineering sales rep Matt Shea is the latest male to join the staff just last year and is still completing his training. He says it was something he was always keen to do but admitted he wasn’t sure if he could. “I thought about it a long time ago when I left school and to be honest, society wasn’t very accepting

of men in early childhood back then. Your mates are going off to be engineers and freezing workers and forestry workers it probably wasn’t the right time for me. But there is a lot more support now and I still had a passion for it so I decided to go for it.” All three men look after children aged six months to five years and say going to work is about as much fun as you could get. Ian Healey started at Bridge St four years ago after he heard Glen was at the centre while he was training. “Everyone kept saying to me ‘go to Bridge St, there’s another guy there’, so I did and I love it here, not just because there are other guys, but because of the culture of the place.” All three say they would like to see more men in the industry and Glen says he is happy for men to come along for a few days to see if they would like to pursue a career in it. “It’s a great job, so much fun and so full on. I don’t think it’s the sort of job you could do if you didn’t want to do it. It has to be a passion.”

Caregivers graduate with flying colours Fourteen Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village staff were treated to a local “graduation” last week. The staff completed Ryman Foundations Programme course and to recognise their achievements and congratulate them Ernest Rutherford held a Graduation Day. Participation in the Foundations Programme earns care-givers an NZQA recognised Level 2 qualification, the National Certificate in Community Support. “We are delighted so many of our staff have taken part with such outstanding results,” says

village manager Caro Bartlett. “We have a highly regarded and enthusiastic care team that has worked extremely hard to achieve this qualification.” This means Ernest Rutherford can guarantee that every member of the caring team has a minimum of a Level 2 qualification. Now that the carers have completed their Level 2 qualification they will go on and complete both national level 3 qualifications through participation in the Aged Care Education workbased training programme.

For generations Mataki Lodge has been a haven for thousands of Nelson College students tramping back from a long walk around the Mataki Valley, near Murchison. Now the lodge, owned by the school, will get a spruce up thanks to grateful exstudents and parents. An annual quiz night, held by the school’s PTA, raised more than $11,500, with most of that money being spent on upgrades to the lodge. Current Nelson College students say the lodge is the base for adventures that are hard, but rewarding. “The lodge is pretty basic, not that flash, but once you get back from sleeping in the dirt for a few nights its pretty good,” says Hayden Erasmus. Jimmy Whitmore, 15, says the experiences at the lodge are character building. “You’re pretty taken aback when you first get there

because you’re out of your comfort zone with a bunch of people you don’t really know. But at the end it’s good because you feel like you’ve accomplished something.” One of the organisers, Maxine Dunne, says the event was a lot of fun and a massive success. “Just a small sub group from the PTA put the evening together, but not without and enormous amount of generosity from the school and wider community. The help received showed the support Nelson is willing to put into the College, with a fantastic outcome.” PTA committee member Sonia Malpas says the lodge is important for the school’s students and old boys were quick to support the quiz night in recognition of that. More than 200 people attended the fundraiser.

Nelson actor earns Aussie acting spot Phillip Rollo Kicking and screaming at the top of his driveway, refusing to go to his first ever audition is not exactly the ideal earliest memory Nelson College leaver Ben Chambers has on musical theatre. But since his chorus role in 2001 in King Arthur, the 18 year-old has gone on to star in over 25 shows in the region, have a song played on C4, host children’s television program the Erin Simpson show, and now be selected in to a three year musical theatre course in Griffith University in Brisbane. “I remember saying ‘I don’t want to audition for this. I just want to play sport and be normal’,” he says. “But I got in, and really enjoyed it. And I’ve kept coming back.” Despite his dad being a Nelsonian and his mum born in England, Ben grew up in Perth before moving to New Zealand when he was just five years-old. But his five year stint in Western Australia has helped his career by allowing him to attend Griffith University as an Australian. “I don’t have any Australian blood in me. But if it gets me in to a school over there I’ll claim it.” Ben has “nothing against New Zealand,” but says the move to Australia was inevitable, and creates better opportunities for his career. In the first year the course is designed for students to improve their

worst skill. Being an accomplished singer and performer, dancing will be a huge focus in 2011. His shows to date include Oliver, Grease, My Fair Lady, Cats and his first lead role the Three Musketeers. “When I started it was a slow road. Chorus roles, chorus roles, more chorus roles. You can’t expect to rock up and get a lead.” Last year, Ben, along with good friend Paul Williams, recorded a parody of Jay Sean’s hit song Down, titled Facebook with the chorus, “Facebook makes my grades go down, down, down.” The song allowed students to relate to the everyday distraction Facebook is on studying for exams. The song was a hit on YouTube and has reached over 16,000 views. Although singing at the church steps for a photo made him a tad nervous, Ben says nerves are something he has learnt to cope with more throughout the year. “Nerves are a weird thing. If it’s going to harm my audition, then you might as well leave them at the door. But anyone who says they don’t get nervous is just a liar. Because everyone does.” Like any promising performer, Ben hopes to reach his end goal of singing on Broadway or the West End. “I’d just love to do anything that in- Ben Chambers getting some practice in before he volves performing for people. A new haircut and a new start. Joss Reid got her hair completely shaven in support of White Ribbon Day, against violence towards women. She says the haircut symbolised a new start and shows other women that if you are going through a tough time that you can have a re-growth in life. Despite a lady in her church wanting to sponsor her to keep her hair, Joss managed to raise $250 for the Women’s Refuge from the shaving. “It will grow again. This money will go to someone who needs the support. It’s a wonderful service.” The only issue Joss and her family had with her new do, was the dangers of the sun. But a brand new hat solved that problem. She even noticed the change in temperature without the hair. “It’s pretty cool. Literally cool.” Monterrey Beauty Therapy Boutique also donated a beauty voucher to the Women’s Refuge.

Carols bring Christmas spirit to life

Singing carols in the sun at the picturesque Gardens of the World could not have been any better. The evening kicked off to the Nelson Jazz Club big band, with music echoing through the beautiful surroundings. This was the first time the carols had featured at the Gardens of the World, and owner Francis Day is keen for the event to be an annual occurrence. Even the ducks from the pond behind the stage waddled over to see what was going on. There were smiles everywhere, although not everyone was keen for a sing along until later in the evening. Kids were enjoying themselves on the bouncy castle, while parents snacked on treats on the mound surrounding the venue. Participants were also keen to check out the garden and could walk around the beautiful landscape between acts. With the event pulling in hundreds of people, there is no doubting this could become one of the major carol services in the region.

Water restrictions likely to be forced Nelson City Council may have to impose water restrictions on some rural residents who take water from rural streams and wells within the week unless we get significant rain. Council staff are monitoring river levels in rural areas and they are steadily dropping says Michael Schruer, executive manager for strategy and planning. “River flows are now only just above the levels where we need to start implementing the first stage of restrictions. Residents in rural areas should do all they can to minimise water use and be prepared to rely on stored water if the dry weather continues. It is very early in the season to be looking at water restrictions so it is an issue we could be managing for some months to come.” Residents who have water storage tanks should make sure they are full

and those who don’t have them are urged to get some. Water restrictions will only apply to Nelson residents who take their water directly from streams and wells and not to those who use council water supply. These residents will be advised by letter when restrictions are imposed. If the situation worsens over time and rural streams reach minimum flow levels, residents’ domestic supply could be restricted and they may need to rely on their own stored water. Reasonable levels of stored water in the Maitai dam mean there are no water restrictions for residents on the main reticulated supply. However, council asks everyone to conserve water where possible as the predictions are that it will be a drier than usual summer.

the need to grow our own identity. We needed to draw a line in the sand and developed our own FPS branding, to distinguish us from others. We also have a new facility set up on the West Coast for all our operations there and also looking at a new facility in Blenheim with Technical Staff already being trained up at our Nelson head office for that move. So we need a branding that people can trust and identify with as well as being able to build on that branding.” FPS now has 17 service and sales vehicles on the road and Robert says the company is well on its way to fulfilling its mission statement. “To become New Zealand leaders in motion control engineering” Over the past few years we’ve taken big leaps to

get there. Having some new key distributors on board this has helped us retain existing staff and attract new personnel through the recession. We are now at the stage where it is time to let everybody know what we are about and what services we provide. FPS Hydraulics Pneumatics now has its building blocks in place and is ready for further growth. “We’ve got a big journey in front of us and that’s exciting,” says Robert. “We’ve done a lot of hard work and because of that we’re in a great position and I expect the business to continue to grow fast, in fact we are still actively looking for staff, long may it continue.”

Multi-sport star off on new adventure after late call up Phillip Rollo Next week multisport adventure racer Trevor Voyce will head off to the United Arab Emirates for the biggest race of his life, the Abu Dhabi Adventure Challenge. The six day event starts on Thursday New Zealand time, and comprises of a monster 130km trek through the desert, an equally tough 120km kayak, as well as biking and swimming. Trevor will be racing for the Adidas Terrex team. The team of four includes fellow New Zealander Sonya Clark and two British males. His selection came after a strong performance in the Lakes to Lighthouse race on the East Coast two weeks ago where Trevor finished second. One of his competitors had pulled out of the Abu Dhabi Challenge but recommended Trevor to take his place in the Adidas team. “I hadn’t planned it this way. I intended to take a break over the summer and work on my kayaking a bit. But when you get a call from someone like that and they offer to pay your way it’s pretty hard to turn down,” he says. The quick turn around has made preparing for the treacherous race even more difficult. While it is still winter in Abu Dhabi, temperatures are likely to reach high 30s and not drop below 25. He says the two

We are going over there for our own reasons to do well, but to keep up with those guys is a pretty big challenge.” Having never raced in a desert before, Trevor says they will wait to see how the race pans out before setting any major goals. IN BRIEF CriCkET Local children will have an opportunity to see some of New Zealand’s top cricketers up close this afternoon at Saxton Oval. From 3.30 to 4.30pm Tuesday, HRV are hosting a net practice for all interested children, players from the Central Stags will be present to help with the coaching. The Stags are in town to play two Twenty/20 cricket matches against Wellington and Canterbury at Saxton Oval on Thursday and Friday respectively. Both games start at 5pm. AThlETiCS There was drama on the finish line of the Mile at the last Nelson Athletics Twilight meet of the year, as Ed Palmer palmed Hugo Lawrence out of his way in the dying meters. Philippe Kreutz managed to avoid the scuffle and hold on to first place, but Hugo suffered and stumbled to third place behind Ed. Philippe’s time was 5 minutes 4.10 seconds. Alistair Adams ran a new personal best just one week away from the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics Championship. The former junior bronze medalist ran 51.38 seconds to comfortably win the 400m ahead of Brodie Hewlett and Ellery Daines. Brodie had outstanding efforts at the meet with another victory in the 100m in 11.49 seconds. He also finished second on count-back in the high jump after equalling 1.65m with Chris Brake. In other results, Dale Pritchard took out the shot put after throwing 13.26m, Brendon Barnett won the long jump, and Hannah Shepard edged Wati Nichols by .01 of a second in the women’s 100m. FooTbAll Man of the match Coey Turipa kept a clean sheet as Canterbury United defeated YoungHeart Manawatu 2-0 in the National Youth League. Adam Smith also featured for Canterbury. Tight racing marks fab swim meet at Nayland Pools The Fab 50’s and Top 200’s swim meet was jointly hosted by the Nelson and Nelson South swim clubs on Saturday. This meet, swum at Nayland Pool, is mostly 50m and 200m races, with some 100m events included to break up the programme. For many swimmers it presents the only local opportunity to experience swimming and to achieve qualifying times in a long course (50m as opposed to 25m) pool. The meet was swum as timed finals, meaning swimmers competed against Chloe Maclean, 13, in the 50m breast-stroke heat at others with similar best times. Nayland Pool on Saturday night. none more so than in the first event on the programme, the 200m breaststroke where Zoe Borrell (Nelson)edged Madisen Stanley (also Nelson) by just 12/100ths of a second to take the overall honours. A highlight of any swim meet is the 50m freestyle, and the local battles between Fraser Neill and William Borrell from Nelson and Ryan Cheyne, Misha Sinner and Francesco Cheruseo from Nelson South continued, with Cheyne taking first place from Neill and Sinner. Next Saturday swimmers hit the pool again at the Motueka ribbon carnival.

MAINLAND CHALLENGE

Finding Wales playing Kazakhstan at a Twenty/20 cricket match in Nelson may not be what most would expect when they stumble across the Bontanics on a Thursday night but the two teams, along with Namibia play there each week. Of course none of the players are actually from those countries, they are just the names three social cricket teams have adopted as they battle at Nelson iconic park in a social cricket league.

The competition was set up by Jon Escreet three years ago to give his son and his mates an opportunity to play against and alongside men in their early college days. The game has grown since then and now includes three full squads which rotate around each week. Jon says the competition is about fun but is still competitive. “In the last few weeks the game has come right down in the final over, last week it was the second to last ball.”

Teams are made up of a mixture of cricketing backgrounds including those who have never played cricket as an adult to former senior players. Jon says it doesn’t really matter what the background is, everyone has a laugh on the field. “Its great fun and everyone takes it in the right spirit which is to give it your all but have a bit of fun.” The games are played each Thursday from 6pm.
