Support builds for merger Andrew Board One week after the Local Government Commission announced it was proceeding with plans to amalgamate the Nelson City and Tasman District councils its backer says support for a merger is now at an all-time high. TDC councillors Kit Maling and Glenys Glover said after the announcement they support amalgamation, as do at least three other district councillors. Business support is also coming thick and fast says Aldo Miccio. “The rural voice in Tasman has really sparked into life, the addition of the rural advisory committee really gives rural people a strong voice on council and they have recognised that.” The LGC released its reorganisation proposal last Tuesday at TDC headquarters in Richmond. That proposal shows a combined council – operating from Richmond – will be the seventh largest in the country. The International Kai Festival is in its fourth year and has gone from strength to strength with thousands eating their way around the world yesterday. “It’s really simple for us, we don’t want to make it complicated at all and I think that’s the beauty of Kai, because it brings people together and they always want to

try some,” says Trevor. One of the things the festival aims to do is create a situation where people of all nationalities can work together in harmony whilst around food. The easy and relaxed celebration is not shared all around the country, with some choosing the national holiday to express opinions and concerns surrounding the treaty. Trevor says Whakatū Marae
