Support builds for merger Andrew Board One week after the Local Government Commission announced it was proceeding with plans to amalgamate the Nelson City and Tasman District councils its backer says support for a merger is now at an all-time high. TDC councillors Kit Maling and Glenys Glover said after the announcement they support amalgamation, as do at least three other district councillors. Business support is also coming thick and fast says Aldo Miccio. “The rural voice in Tasman has really sparked into life, the addition of the rural advisory committee really gives rural people a strong voice on council and they have recognised that.” The LGC released its reorganisation proposal last Tuesday at TDC headquarters in Richmond. That proposal shows a combined council – operating from Richmond – will be the seventh largest in the country. But before any merger gets the go-ahead, residents in Nelson and Tasman need to vote to accept or reject the proposal. A majority in both regions is needed to pass the plan with voting packs being sent to electors from March 31. Voting will close on April 21. Aldo says the number of people supporting the plan is growing as they realise the benefits to the region but now a big push is needed to ensure people vote and they know what they are voting for. “This is a crucial stage now, the commission

What a Waitangi Jonathan McKeown
Celebrating Waitangi Day in Nelson is about the simple idea of community and bringing people together says Trevor Wilson, of Whakatū Marae. The Marae, along with Founders Heritage Park, were the base of Waitangi Day celebrations in Nelson yesterday with the International Kai Festival. Trevor says the day is about celebrating the joining of all of our cultures, not just
particularly Maori and Pakeha and so the idea for the International Kai Festival was born of friends and family sharing a meal together on Waitangi Day. The International Kai Festival is in its fourth year and has gone from strength to strength with thousands eating their way around the world yesterday. “It’s really simple for us, we don’t want to make it complicated at all and I think that’s the beauty of Kai, because it brings people together and they always want to
try some,” says Trevor. One of the things the festival aims to do is create a situation where people of all nationalities can work together in harmony whilst around food. The easy and relaxed celebration is not shared all around the country, with some choosing the national holiday to express opinions and concerns surrounding the treaty. Trevor says Whakatū Marae

Aldo says Richmond is shaping up to be the big battleground for the election, although he isn’t counting his chickens in Nelson. “There is a lot of support for it in Nelson but the last thing we want is people to assume it will just go through in Nelson and not vote. Seagull hooks saviour Haven Fish and Chip shop owner Laurence MacDonald is used to shooing seagulls away from his shop, not wooing them in. But sitting outside having his afternoon tea after the lunch rush last week, Laurence saw a seagull with a fish hook and a piece of nylon in its mouth, so he acted. “I felt sorry for the poor little bastard,” he says. Laurence, with the help of other shop workers, enticed the seagull into the shop with the promise of a cut up mussel. The bird came in, and then Laurence shut the doors on it and attempted to catch it. He got it but the ungrateful gull almost pushed his saviour too far. “He bit me on the finger the little s***. So he almost met his end then and there,” jokes Laurence. The bird was put in a box until the SPCA arrived to get the hook out and set it free again. Laurence says the moral of the story is for fishermen on the Wakefield Quay wharf to clean up after themselves. “If you’re going to go fishing, take your stuff with you, I don’t particularly like seagulls but it’s not his fault he’s got a hook down his throat. It’s our little dumb friends we’re thinking of here. It’s not nice to see an animal in pain like that.” Laurence was hailed a hero by his staff; he was far more modest though. “I just felt sorry for the little bugger, that’s all.”
ADopT A pET: The Nelson SPCA is holding its third “Adopt-A-Thon” event the weekend before Valentines Day on Saturday, February 11 from 10am to 2pm and Sunday, February 12 from 10am to 1pm. The Adopt-a-thon is a chance to find loving homes for as many animals as possible over the weekend before Valentines Day. It is a nationwide event and the Nelson SPCA is hoping to find permanent homes for hundreds of wonderful pets at the centre. SUmmEr ToUr hiTS NElSoN: The More FM Summer Vineyard Tour arrives in Nelson tomorrow, ready to rock Trafalgar Park. The tour, which has already played in Hawkes Bay, New Plymouth and Martinborough, features plenty of great acts, including the John Butler Trio and Tiki Taane. Gates open at 5pm on Wednesday, for ticketing information visit ticketek.co.nz. corrEcTioN: Last week’s Nelson Weekly featured a story on Katherine Patterson, who is currently studying at Cornell University. The article said novelist Vladimir Nabokov was one of her professors. This was incorrect, Nelson Weekly apologises for the error. Haven Fish & Chip Shop owner Laurence MacDonald captured a seagull with a fish hook in its mouth last week. The SPCA was able to remove the hook and set him free after Laurence caught him. Nelson’s Buskerburgoo – the street buskers and street theatre series – is not just about entertainment, as some spectators found out, it’s also about participation. Whether it’s Jacqui Algie’s ‘Miss Australia’ routine with a highly interactive show that features handbag twirling, a sassy catwalk and a talent quest, or Lee Nelson’s ‘The Wally Show’ which mixes slapstick comedy with somewhat “borderline” innuendo, there are always a few lucky spectators who get called up to play their part. One of those lucky – or unlucky participants, depending on how you look at it – was Nelson local Jason Walker. Like the thousands of visitors and Nelsonians who went along to the Trafalgar St shows, Jason just turned up to have a look and a “bit of a laugh” with the family, but one wrong move had him firmly in Wally’s sights. “When Wally asked the whole crowd to yell and cheer I just sat there and did nothing, so he just honed in on me and that was it for the rest of the show,” says Jason. Used as a live prop, Jason performed alongside Wally and more than once got a big "Wally man hug" for his troubles. Jason was the butt of another joke, when holding Wally’s stunt ladder, the Aussie born performer couldn’t quite make it over Jason’s back no matter how vigorously he tried to climb him. Catering for both adults and children in the audience must be a tough gig, but Jason thinks Wally struck the right note. “With kids around some his jokes were a bit borderline, but it was all in good fun,” he says. As for Jason, the moment he was picked out he says he felt no nerves, no butterflies and no raised heartbeat. “It doesn’t bother me, eh? I just take it as it comes and he was brilliant anyway.”

Community rallies for ambulance pull A vintage ambulance will be tiki-touring the region on Saturday – but don’t expect it to cover much ground. The 1940 International ambulance is in Nelson this weekend where it will make its way from the Richmond Mall to the Nelson Car Show, next to the Speight’s Ale House. But it won’t be the vehicles ancient motor powering it, community groups from around the region will be using their leg power to help get the ambulance from A to B. Groups of eight will take turns pulling the ambulance 8km along roads to the car show all in the name of raising funds for a new St John ambulance. St John has raised $56,000 so far for
the new ambulance, which will be used at community and sporting events in Nelson. St John needs to raise a further $69,000 to meet its target and be able to buy the new ambulance. Amongst the groups pulling for the cause is the Nelson College first XV and staff from ASB Bank in Nelson. The Ambulance Pull will leave Richmond Mall (Talbot St) at 10am and wind its way down Salisbury Rd, Main Rd, Songer St, Nayland Rd and along to the Nelson Car Club Show next to Mitre10 Mega. To support this effort please give generously when you see the vintage ambulance. Contact Sarah McCabe on 546 9445 for more information.

Waitangi Day done right I reckon we celebrate Waitangi Day better than anyone here in Nelson; no drama, no yelling – just plenty of relaxing and fun. Our national day is not often celebrated as it should be throughout New Zealand. Watch how those Aussies celebrate their national holiday and they really get into it and enjoy the occasion. Here we bitch at each other. Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand we still have issues and Maori have (legitimate) concerns. But on a day we should be celebrating who we are and how we got here, we end up… well… angry at who we are and how we got here. Over the years we’ve had Prime Ministers spat on and pushed, flags shot and burned. For most of us we watch these images on TV, sit back, and it’s hard to feel any attraction to the day. But if you shut off your TV and attended celebrations here in Nelson, I think you would leave with a sense of pride. The Whakatū Marae and Founders Heritage Park do Waitangi Day cel-
ebrations right. Invite all cultures to share the best part of any culture – its food – and let people stroll around while enjoying the sun (mostly). Punters can even watch a powhiri and marvel at the culture that deserves its place as central to New Zealand’s way of life. My Waitangi Day was spent working, but I did manage to sneak down to Founders and Whakatū for an hour or so and enjoy the day. I liked how laid back the whole thing was, from kids running around in bare feet to one stallholder I overheard telling a customer not to worry that they were 30 cents short, they were close enough. It’s all cultures coming together to enjoy what I think we all like about our country, its friendliness and laid back nature. Leave Waitangi to the politicians and protesters – if you think about it, it’s pretty good being a Kiwi and even better being a Nelsonian. I’m glad we realise that we live in a great place and leave all the anger to those further north than us.
From My Desk Listening to the excited voices of children as they go shopping for the latest in pens, pencil cases and notebooks from Smiggle, grabbing the coolest backpacks from Amazon and dropping by Living and Giving to replace those old lunch boxes from last year, I with many other parents let out a sigh of relief that our children are back in school where they can get back to a daily routine and we can stop and enjoy a well deserved coffee, catching up with friends and hearing of their summer adventures. Wednesday is the perfect day to stock up on eggs, fresh fruit and veges from the farmers market. Taking the time to investigate all the other stalls which range from pastries, shortbread, freshly baked pita and other delights. A romantic lunch at Morrison St Cafe and a $100 gift voucher is part of the Valentines day promotion at Fashion Island. Spend $30 in any of the centre’s stores to be in to win! Locals get behind Neighbours Day
Artist picks up excellence award
Nelson neighbourhoods are being encouraged to get behind Neighbours Day by hosting street events and nominating their neighbourhood for prizes. Neighbourhood Support Nelson is supporting the national day which aims to encourage Kiwis to go one step further in getting to know their neighbours on a special day each year. Neighbours Day is on March 20 but Neighbourhood Support would like people to let them know how they are celebrating the day, whether it’s with a street party, or a cup of tea amongst neighbours. All entries will go into a draw to win great prizes. Entries close February 24 and for an application form email nsupport@xtra.co.nz. Neighbourhood Support coordinator Kim MacDonald says the day is a great opportunity to get to know your neighbour a bit better. “Whether it’s a first wave or smile, a chat over the fence, inviting someone in for a cuppa or holding a street barbeque, every connection makes our neighbourhoods more friendly, fun and safe. Neighbours Day Aotearoa is also about celebrating the neighbourhoods we have. It’s not about big events, but local activity in every street and neighbourhood.” To find out more about Neighbours Day visit its website at www.neighboursday.org.nz.

Nick Haig with some of his work after picking up an award for excellence.
Nelson painter Nick Haig has won the annual Jens Hansen Award of Excellence in Visual Arts and Design at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. The Bachelor of Arts and Media graduate says it was “a big surprise and an honour” to win the Jens Hansen Award, which is presented to the highest academic achiever in the Visual Arts and Design major of NMIT’s Arts and Media programme. “I’d always wanted to study art but thought it would be perhaps too indulgent,” says Nick. “Finally, I realised I had to give it a go.” NMIT Creative Industries Programme Area Leader David James says Nick is one of those who not only paints well, but also makes people think. “Nick is a highly reflective, thoughtful artist. He tries to get his audience thinking - putting them in a position to think differently about life, humanity and themselves and to challenge people, not just engage with them on a superficial level. “His work demands you think and reflect rather than just say ‘well, that’s a pretty picture,’ – which is what good contemporary art does.” After a successful first step, Nick is now planning for the next phase of his journey as an artist.

A new car wash service has hit a Nelson car park, saying it is an eco-friendly alternative for getting a clean car. WashWise is a new Eco initiative business that has started in the Nelson Wakatu car park during weekends. It is a full car wash that uses just one litre of water. Co-founder John McNaught and his business partner came up with the idea of washing cars while parked, and after a lot then after a lot of modification they “Kiwi’ised” it for our car-parks. In John’s language Kiwi’ised means looking after the local environment and getting plenty of youth, and parents into the workforce. “It is environmentally friendly and has the ability to put an enormous number of people into jobs, from school Founder of the WashWise Eco initiative John McNaught, right, leavers to mums returning to with the Wakatu car park crew of Cameron Barr and Rachel the workforce with the need to James ready to make your car sparkle with minimal waste. No new CEO for council yet Nelson City Council is not to proceed with recruiting a new chief executive until after the result of the Local Government Commission poll on the proposed merger of Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council is known, it annoucned last week. Instead, council has appointed Richard Johnson as acting chief executive after current chief executive Keith Marshall leaves the organisation in mid April. Richard is currently the executive manager of the regulatory division and has been at Nelson City Council for five years. His career in local government spans more than 30 years. Mayor Aldo Miccio says it made sense to appoint someone in an acting role. “With the uncertainty of the amalgamation proposal ahead of us, this was the logical decision to make. “We thank Keith for all his work in leading the very successful transformation of council culture and wish him all the best for the future. We’re delighted to be able to appoint Richard to lead the organisation through the coming months and look forward to welcoming him to the role.” Richard says he is pleased to have the opportunity to step into the role. “There’s no doubt Keith’s influence will be missed but I look forward to the challenges that may lie ahead of the organisation this year.”

Cathedral NZ’s most visited Nelson’s Church of Christ Cathedral is now the country’s most visited, says its Dean. Dean Nick Kirk says the Anglican Cathedral at the top of Trafalgar St is iconic to Nelson and because of that and where it is in the city, it attracts a large number of visitors. “We don’t keep records of how many people come through but during some of the festivals we host we can see upwards of 400 people coming through a day.” Before Nelson took the number one spot in the country, Christchurch’s Cathedral was the country’s most visited, again because of its location in the city centre and because it is an icon of Christchurch. “Obviously we aren’t celebrating being the most visited at Christchurch’s expense because of the earthquake, but Nelson has always been strong behind Christchurch and it’s great to see so many people want to come and see the Cathedral.” The Nelson i-Site says the Cathedral is high on visitors list of things to see in the city.

looking forward to getting back in the workforce after the course. “I use to work as a roofer until my eyes got too bad and I was doing a tourism course last year so I’d love to go back and finish that.” The latest surgery Jamie had in November was to try to slow the rate of blindness in his good eye. He wears glasses and can still drive but is hoping to gain a bit more confidence before trying to reenter the workforce. “It can be really frustrating so I’m really grateful to Specsavers for helping me out. Nelson man Jamie Sumner is use to eye specialists helping him out – it’s usually on his eyes though. Jamie was given a cheque for $500 from Specsavers Nelson and Richmond to help him pay for a trip on Outward Bound. The course will help Jamie, who is blind in one eye and slowly losing the sight in the other, with his confidence after his latest eye surgeries. Jamie has had around 50 surgeries on his eyes since he was a baby, including eight last year, and has a disease called congenital glaucoma. He says he is stoked with the donation and is

to showcase local musical talent and for the wider community of Nelson to experience the ever improving suburb on the City Centre’s doorstep. This year the line-up is comprised exclusively of musicians hailing from Victory, or bands with members from the Victory Community. These include Smooth Cone Sound and DJ Sandcastle, as well as Weave, Victory Death Club, and the Irish sounds of The Saints. Crystal Set will be performing, with many of their songs written in or about Victory. The Little Day Out will also be the debut of the Mahala Freedom Band, which is made up of members well known already for their musical skill. Their debut promises to be impressive and their dance tunes are sure to get crowds moving.

The bands will play from 1pm until around 7pm, with pop, rockabilly, dance and Irish jig to keep everyone in the crowd entertained. While you’re enjoying the music, there will be other attractions to keep the kids entertained, market stalls for the shoppers within. Young ones can enjoy the toddler zone or have a go on the bouncy castle, and there will be an interactive artwork. This year it will be a Sand Mandala run by Lou- D’arcie, an artwork made from coloured sand. Anyone who wants to participate can join in and add their flair to the piece that will spread across the concrete stage in Victory square. The project from Little Day Out’s first art in the park are the wall paintings that now adorn the public toilets in the square, so come along to see what the community creates this year, and join in as well. Victory’s Little Day Out is also a great time for
kids to have a chance at performing in a unique atmosphere. This year we have a group from Nelson Academy of Dance to get you into the groove.

If you’re interested in having a food stall at the event, contact the organisers at xit972@gmail. com. The day is about building community ties and social cohesion, says Andrea Barker of the Victory Community Association. Andrea says she looks forward to members from the wider community of Nelson coming to experience what Victory has to offer in terms of musical talent
and community values. It’s the third year Victory’s Little Day Out will run, and Andrea says the event has great potential, with huge support from local bands. “I received an onslaught of texts and emails from local musicians and bands asking to play, wanting to be a part of the event.” The Johnnies are a successful and well known all woman Johnnie Cash tribute band from Victory, and although Andrea says they can’t make it this year, they’re very excited to be involved in the event; “They’ve already put it in their diaries to play next year.” With such a strong backing from locals, a great line up of musicians and bands and many other attractions, this year’s Little Day Out is sure to be an event not to miss.

Cadillac Way
(Next to Speights Ale House)
Annesbrook, Nelson on the day will go into a random draw with a new set of tyres from Mag & Turbo for the winner. Even with the massive range of vehicles that will be on display, cars aren’t the only reason to come to the Nelson Car Show. The burnout competition held on the Saturday from 12pm to 3pm is sure to get hearts racing, with a Motocross jump display held before and after. The Sunday will be the main show day, with band Krazy Kats playing from 10am, the RC stock car racing, and of course the all-important judging of the cars and prizegiving, which will be held at around 3pm. There will be hot food and cold drinks, and Speights Ale House will be setting up a hospitality tent so you can grab a cold beer. To keep the little ones amused, there will be a bouncy castle. This Friday, the night before the show opens, there will be an evening cruise from 4pm, starting at the showground. You can drive in the convoy from Cadillac Way through Nelson City via Stoke and Wakatu, around the waterfront to Tahunanui, where there will be a beach barbecue. Entrants will receive a free Pestells sausage, and it’s a great chance to bring along a picnic and enjoy the warm summer evening.
The Car Show was started in 2005 as a way for local enthusiasts to indulge their passion and members of the community to see some of the most interesting or impressive cars and motorbikes in our district. It has been growing ever since, and this year looks to continue that trend. The showgrounds will be at Cadillac Way in Annesbrook, just past the Speights Ale House. There will be signs directing attendants and free show parking for the cars that aren’t entering the competition. Come (1991) LTD along to enter your prized vehicle or just to see some of the greatest cars from our region.

Waka Ama club looking to build youth
The Whakatu Marae Waka Ama Club in action, the club is hosting a "Whanau Day" this Saturday where people interested in the sport can come along. Photo: Andrew Board.
The region's third Waka Ama group is hoping to help develop the sport for the region's youth, starting this weekend with an open day. The Whakatu Marae Waka Ama club has a good core of keen athletes ready to help build the sport in Nelson and doing it for free. To become a member of the club does not cost but club president Patariki Hippolite says he expects dedication from those keen to be involved. The club is Marae-based but Patariki says he doesn’t want that to put people off. “We don’t want people to get scared because we are Marae-based, we’re not about that, everyone is welcome to come along. It’s fun and if people like it they can keep coming back and perhaps go to races if they really excel.” The first of the Whanau Days is this coming Saturday from 10am on Tahunanui Beach. Patariki says the whole family is welcome. “Young and old, mums, dads, kids and grandparents are all welcome. That’s what we’re trying to achieve, the whole family in one waka.” Last year the club sent an under 19 team to nationals, where it was a finalist, a great effort for a club entering for the first time.
Suburbs to celebrate 50 years in style Phillip Rollo
These teams start from the 10th grade through to 17th grade and will all be cocoached by Joe and Ben. Several teams will be going on trips away to take part in tournaments around the country. This is so players can be exposed to competitive football and so players can gauge where they are at with their development within the sport. A new junior kit has been released to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the club. Club president Jason Lavington would like to thanks to NBS for all of their support over the years as without their support initiatives like this would not be possible. A new junior development fund account has also been set up with NBS, which will enable sponsors to donate money into an account, purely for developing kids and sponsoring those who cannot afford to go on trips. The Mainland squad has been boosted by the return of New Zealand Under-20 goal keeper Coey Turipa. Former skipper Michael Bothwell has also featured in pre-season and the club is in talks with former New Zealand Knights player Mike White. Paul Brydon will be taking coaching the first division team, which will now feature a mix of youth and senior players. Youth players that want to eventually play Mainland Football will be coached by Joe, Ben and Darryn Cunningham in a Mainland development team that will cater for youths aged 15 to 17 years-old.
Nelson Suburbs have plenty in the works for 2012 as they celebrate 50 years as a club. The weekend’s return of Joe Green, who joins Ben Wright as the club’s directors of football, means the club is ready to kick on for the new season. Their role will look after the Mainland squad as well as playing an important piece in developing the youth of Nelson, even outside the club. Joe and Ben are in full support of the Rangers Academy which is coming to Nelson on April 9 to 13. The academy is being held in the first week of the Easter school holidays with any young all players from in the region being invited clubs available to take part. This is the start of all clubs in the region working together so that players can have the opportunity to be developed by professional coaches. There are still spaces available and you can book a spot by contacting Nelson Suburbs. Several Christchurch players will be also attending. Ben and Joe will also be holding skill centres at Saxton fields starting on February 28, so all kids in the area can have the opportunity to be coached by some our most experienced footballers in the region. Trials for the Nelson Suburbs development teams will be held February 12, 17, 19 and 21.

The Nayland College and Nelson College alumnus has completed a three year course at Lincoln University and is now raring to return to Greenmeadows. A batsman for Stoke/Nayland, the multi-talented athlete looks set to slot into the playmaker role for his childhood union club. At just 20 years of age, Jacob is a player with plenty of promise and hopes to gain back his confidence after suffering an ankle fracture in 2009. He spent three years playing for Lincoln University, his first two were at Under-21 level and the final year was in the second division. Jacob was a starting rep firstfive from Nelson Bays Under-10 through to Nelson Bays Under-16. of some really good catches out there. Another good spot has been the Ruby Bay end of Rabbit Island where plenty of bream between 25 and 35cm mark have been caught. Also along the Bolder Bank, there has been plenty of action. We saw some good sized Kingfish being caught just off the lighthouse by members of the fishing club, they were about 75-95cm long. Tip of the week: Head to the Ruby Bay end of Rabbit Island or off the Boulder Bank near the Glen in about 60 to 70 feet of water. Target them with flasher rigs and a small bit of squid.
Earthquakes have been a real killer for fishermen and women over the past week or so. We don’t know why, but fish do not like earthquakes so a lot of areas have been pretty quiet. Delaware Bay was really hard work for those who made the trip, with one boat getting just a few fish for a day’s work. The news was equally poor for Kenepuru and Pelorus, both areas are very patchy and we haven’t heard of anyone catching anything of any significance for a while. Now for some good news, the snapper are still fishing quite well in Tasman Bay, we’ve heard stories
