Tourists vital to summer economy Phillip Rollo Despite glorious summer weather, local camping groups and motels say bookings are only slightly up on previous years. Nelson’s Motel Association of New Zealand spokesperson John Gilbertson says Christchurch tourists still play a vital role to Nelson summer economy with 80 per cent of the visitors to Nelson coming from Christchurch. His dates show that visitor numbers to the region had not increased during the past six years and with some earthquake affected Canterbury residents still waiting to find out insurance payouts, it was hard to predict when they will make their way to Nelson. “There are the traditional people that come on holiday during their statutory holidays anyway but what will be interesting is to see what happens from here,” he says. “Will the peo-
ple who spent New Year’s working come to Nelson or will they go to Brisbane or Queenstown? We need to get the message to the people of Christchurch that there’s plenty of availability, the weather is fantastic and come on up.” Nelson Tasman Tourism say most tourism operators are busier this summer compared with last year, which was expected after the earthquake and flooding. All i-Sites have been seeing similar levels to last year with some reporting slightly higher numbers of visitors. Some camping ground managers and owners agreed that the improved weather had made visiting Nelson more appealing, but some had seen fewer visitors than in previous years. Quinney’s Bush owners say visitor numbers were down on last year even though the

Sun shines on race days Sinead Ogilvie Thousands of people turned out for the Nelson Harness Racing Club annual summer meet over the weekend. From the fashionable to families, the two days of racing entertained
over 7000 people in the sun over two days. The horses were only half the fun with people enjoying picnics, contests and entertainment throughout the day and Nelson Harness Club President John McKenzie says the popular event was a huge success this year.
“We were absolutely thrilled to bits with the support of the event by Nelson people and holidaymakers. The grandstand was chock-a-block and it was great to see families enjoying themselves.”

Arrest in Victory rape case A 22 year old man has been arrested after the brutal and prolonged attack and rape of a 62 year old woman at the Victory Communiy Gardens. Nelson police arrested the man before 8am on Monday morning. His DNA matched that of DNA left at the scene of the attack, which clinched the investigation after he was on the initial suspect list. Detective sergeant Ian Langridge says the victim was “elated” with the news, six days after the attack. “Her relief is shared by our entire investigation team who have put in some long hours since this terrible incident on New Year’s Day. I’m sure the people of Nelson will also be very relieved to know we have this man in custody.” He described the man as “in need of help” and that many of the investigating team commented that the attack has been one
of the most severe they’ve ever seen in Nelson where the victim has not died. The man appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday afternoon on charges of kidnapping, aggravated injuring, injuring with intent to injure, indecent assault and four counts of sexual violation. Detective sergeant Ian says the support Ian Langridge of the community speaks to media yeshas been a huge help terday. for police. “We’re very fortunate here in Nelson Bays, we’ve got a very supportive community,
this result is thanks to the police and the community working together in partnership.” He says police are not looking for any other suspects. Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Steve Greally congratulated the investigation team for their work. “This crime was particularly heinous in nature and generated a great deal of emotion within the wider Nelson community and particularly within the Victory area. I would like to congratulate and thank Detective Sergeant Ian Langridge and his investigation team for the countless hours they invested to enable an arrest. “I would also like to thank members of the community for their assistance in resolving this matter. I have said it before, that police cannot work without the assistance of the community and we are very grateful for the support we get in Nelson Bays,” he says.

Thief caught out by phone app, facebook and friends

Andrew Board A Nelson man’s stolen iphone was retrieved after the thief turned it on, pointing the way to his house in Westport via the ‘find my iphone’ app which locates lost phones via its built-in GPS unit. Marcus Lovell says he must have left the phone in the back of a taxi last Thursday night and was gutted when he couldn’t find it the next day. He was resigned to losing it forever when the thief – who turned out to be another taxi passenger – turned on the phone which was located by the app when Marcus searched for it. He says he couldn’t believe his good luck. “I mean seriously, the guy can’t be too smart. He threw away the sim card thinking that’s how it could be tracked but that’s not how iphones work. I’m rapt I got it back.” Marcus posted the address of the thief on his Facebook page and explained what had happened when Aaron Ewers an old school friend from Waimea College, now living in Reefton, saw the post and called some friends in Westport to see if they knew who lived there.

PRIZE WINNERS ANNOUNCED Nelson man Marcus Lovell is reunited with his iphone after it was stolen from a taxi and found at the thiefs house in Westport. Photo: Andrew Board. One of the friends recognised the car in the driveway and went to have a word to him and shortly after some choice words were exchanged Marcus’ phone was back in friendly hands. “So I put that post on after 5 o’clock Saturday afternoon after him turning the phone on at around 3pm. Aaron’s mate had the phone back by 7:30. How unbelievable is that? Thank god for ‘find my iPhone’, Facebook, and burly miners,” he says. He says losing the phone was
like breaking up with a girlfriend and he was most upset about some holiday photos that he hadn’t saved. He had filed a report with police and says he will be happy to tell them not to bother looking anymore. The ‘find my iphone’ app can be bought through itunes and takes just a couple of minutes to set up says Marcus. “That’s a $1000 phone and I think the app cost me $1.29, so it’s been money well spent.”
Congratulations to Robyn Cliff who won the $1000 grand prize and our weekly prize winners who won a $100 dining voucher, Julie Fitzgerald-White, Jane Bosecke, Don & Merl Fraser, Mark Mackenzie and Gloria Mankelow.

Event organiser Chris Butler says the event was a huge success, with fantastic weather adding to the atmosphere and numbers up on last year for both race days. “Seeing everyone having a great time was a highlight, people were having a lot of fun and it was enjoyed by all,” he says. Friday’s Best Hat competition, won by Carol Merrilees and her homemade creation, was a great prelude to the popular Fashion in the Field event held on Sunday. Winner of the Best Dressed Female category was Sarah Earwaker, 17, of Brightwater who won $1000 in Richmond Mall vouchers and $200 worth of Oxygen skincare product as part of her prize. She says she never expected her outfit, inspired by “a classic race day look” to win. “I was shocked but it was so fun.” Sue Newport who attended the races on Friday says she was “really impressed” with the event and the entertainment on offer, having been to larger race events while living in Christchurch. “It’s really nicely put together and family focused. I like how much they have put on for the kids. It’s brilliant.”

Classic bikes take centre stage
Phillip Rollo
The largest collection of classic and vintage motorcycles in New Zealand had a certain feel of nostalgia about it over the weekend. Ask any member of the Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcyle Club and they will tell you the reason they own a two wheeler that’s more than 25 years old is because it reminds them of their youth. Murray Hunt has restored nine classic motorcycles in his lifetime and currently has a 1950 Triumph 650 Thunderbird and a 1960 T120C Bonneville. He had Triumphs when he was a teenager for two reasons; they were the only ones he could afford and they were the motorcycles that the girls liked. “When I was a teenager they were all the rage. I’ve had a Triumph since 1959. They were the ones that used to get the women,” he laughs, speaking to the Nelson Weekly at the club’s annual showcase, held at the Stoke Memorial Hall on the weekend. Murray had his first motorcycle for five years but the longest he has kept one was 33 years. Now in his retirement, Murray says he enjoys restoring motorcycles mostly because of the chase in finding parts that were made so long ago. The internet has made life a little easier when searching for spares but local business British Spares is usually the first port of call.

A lot of this stuff on the internet has been reproduced. The original parts are still the best.” Most of the restored classics are worth more than current day motorcycles but they are a lot harder to handle with tighter steering. “Technology is better than old technology but I still find it nicer to ride an old bike.” Manning the barbecue at the showcase, club president Peter Wood says the club welcomed around 450 visitors through on the weekend, which was similar to previous years’ figures.
“It’s a good turnout. Sunday is when we had the swap meet, which brings more people into the show,” he says. The showcase is held to help fundraise for events throughout the calendar year. The club is the largest of its kind in the country, which is partly due to its loose restrictions. Some similar clubs in other provinces tend to specialize in certain makes, rather than allowing members who own anything that is more than 25 years old. For more details on the club, email nelsonclassicmc@hotmail.co.nz.
weather has now improved since the New Year, owner-manager Mark Quinney says the “undecided weather” during the final week of December meant most campers had put their plans on hold until later in the year. “We’re looking healthier in the latter part of January before school goes back,” says Mark. Most of the visitors to his campground came from the Top of the South and that included a large portion of Nelson residents that often make day trips. Kaiteriteri Beach Motor Camp office manager Jenny Guild says the campground was fully booked between December 24 and February 1 with close to 2000 visitors each night. “The weather has been better but we’re just as full as we usually are. We take bookings on a yearly basis but they’re all regulars that come back year after year,” she says. Eighty per cent of the camp’s clientele were from Christchurch and the average visitor usually stays for at least two weeks. Tahunanui Beach Holiday Park manager Ann Cumpstone has reported a small increase compared with previous years. The park lost some bookings last year following regional flooding and the Christchurch earthquake. However, it was now slightly higher than usual. “On the whole most people came and they were back again this year. The weather sends them up here and we’re now in our fourth generation of campers. It’s been a family tradition and they just keep coming,” says Ann. Tahunanui Beach Holiday Park has had an increase in international guests and domestic travelers in motor homes.

Jazz fest hits the right note

Crowds of people enjoyed a taste of jazz in the park on Saturday as the Woolaston Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival ended on a high note. The annual festival held over six days saw thousands of Nelsonians attend performances of local jazz talent at venues all over the region. Festival organiser Liam Ryan says the jazz in the park event held at Washbourn
Gardens was a favourite each year due to its community atmosphere and it attracted around 4000 people on the weekend. The great weather meant people enjoyed picnics, food and drink in the afternoon sun while enjoying performances from local musicians such as the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band says Liam. Nelson blues band Boogie Train got people up and dancing well into the evening
with the help of a group of enthusiastic Ceroc dancers that drew in crowds to the front of the stage. Nigel and Catherine Bensemen of Annesbrook said the jazz in the park event was something they enjoyed and looked forward to every year. “There’s a bubbly atmosphere here in the park and there are some great bands. It’s a really great event.”

NCC chief excited about city’s future The city council’s new chief executive says she is delighted to be in Nelson and excited about the city’s future. Clare Hadley took up the reins at city hall a week before Christmas and took time out to sit down with Nelson Weekly in a one-on-one interview. She says the job was meant to be after missing out on the same role at Tasman District Council less than a year earlier. “The Lord moves in mysterious ways, so I saw it as everything happens for a reason so I was delighted when the job came up and even more delighted when they were interested in me.” Clare is originally from Otago and worked at Palmerston North District Council and Rangitikei District Council before moving south. She says she’s visited Nelson for years as a holiday destination and has family in Motuka. Clare Hadley. She says Nelson’s cultural activity is a real strong point and reflects the community’s passion in that area. “There is a significant part of the budget that is applied to that and I think Nelson does it really well. There is a strong sense of community about Nelson and it’s reflected in Nelson and it’s reflected in what people say about Nelson.” She says there are challenges though and she is keen to ensure consultation is done right the first time around. “I think the council needs to hear from its community but it’s better for both the council and the community if it is done in the first round of discussions. I think one of the things – and I’m not reflecting on Nelson here, I’m reflecting on the sector across the country – I think one of the challenges is how you understand how the [regular] man actually feels as opposed to the squeaky wheel that turns up in the council chamber and one of the challenges for us as a sector is making people feel comfortable coming into our space to share their views.”

Outdoor movie screens light up parks

Locals have been enjoying movies beneath the stars as well as watching them on the big screen with Summer Movies Al Fresco in full swing at local parks and outdoor venues around the Nelson region. The annual outdoor movie screenings are open to the public and feature a selection of classic movies on an inflatable big screen, perfectly designed for bean bag, pyjamas and deck chair viewing says organiser Antony Hodgson. An intimate crowd gathered at Washbourn Gardens in Richmond on Sunday night and despite a brief thunder and lightning storm threatening the screening of 1956 classic High Society, the show went on with families and friends settling in for the
Local artists ready for garden exhibition Art buffs will have the chance to view unique work from over 50 local artists at an annual event held at Queens Gardens this weekend. Art Group Nelson will exhibit a selection of their pieces from glass work, paintings, wood work and carvings to the public in an open air showcasing, providing the community a chance to view and invest in local talent. Artists Marg Rawlins of Richmond and Connie Charlton of Enner Glynn are both looking forward to the event which Marg says will feature a huge variety of art. As well as sharing her own work and viewing what others have been working on, she hopes to sell a few pieces over the weekend. “It’s just great to think someone may want to take my work home and have it on their wall.” The exhibition will be held this Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm at the Hardy St end of Queens Gardens.
evening after the rain passed. The outdoor moves are always well attended says Antony and he puts their success down to a combination of watching a movie in a great outdoor setting and the sense of joint experience the public gets. “It’s about strangers sitting next to each other talking and the uniqueness of being able to come down in your sleeping bag.” Stoke local Jacinda says she and husband Josef BeyerRieger attend the movies every year and enjoy the relaxed atmospehere of watching films outside. “It’s great and it’s also a chance to watch old movies we’ll probably not see again.” The movies are viewed on an inflatable big screen at different locations throughout the region and will continue until January 28.

A Nelson health and safety consultant has been recognised for his work in writing international safety standards for earth moving equipment. Peter Fisher started writing a code of practice for New Zealand machinery in 2000 as the government tried to cut down the average of 12 deaths per year on the equipment. Three years later he finished the world-first code which the government pushed through despite some opposition from in Japan and the United States which wanted New Zealand to “slow down” on implementing the code. By that time Peter, who worked as a machinery inspector for the department of labour for 34 years, had been contacted by the International Organization for Standardization from Geneva to see if he could come to their planning meeting and give a paper on the code he’d written. He says the meeting was a surprise as his 20 minute paper turned into an hour and a half with questions coming from representatives the world over. He was then asked to lead a

The group finished the standard – which required tip over and roll over protection structures among others – which came into effect in 2006, Peter says it’s very similar to what he wrote in his initial code of practice for New Zealand. All of the experts that work on standards are volunteers and Peter says he was almost
speechless when told he would be recognised for his efforts with the Standards New Zealand Meritorious Service Award. “The lady had to ask if I was still there. I was absolutely blown away, to be recognised by peers, I was absolutely astounded.” Nelson MP Nick Smith congratulated Peter on his achievement when the pair met at Nick's Nelson office last month.

House got hit by lightning out here in Wakefield, terrifying. Bronté Marcella White. Stunning lightning seen from Panorama Drive and an awesome sunset after a fabulous weekend of endless sunshine! Marlene Wood Schutte. Street art comes to life: There's a purple dude standing on Trafalgar St, can someone call the cops and have him moved, Hone Ma Heke-style? Haha. Where's your favourite swimming hole? Kaiteri defiantly takes the cake! Nothing beats it. Richie Hunter. Also the Maitai river, but it does not look inviting anymore. Helen Power Te Pukatea. Now you hear about people's dogs dying from swimming in the river and undercurrents sweeping people out to sea at Tahuna.... Bec Raveness. Golden Bay beaches are best. Niki O'Connor. I love swimming up the Lee Valley. I miss the rivers so much. I live in Perth now and would give anything to be able to have a dip in the Lee right now. Jackie Smith.

Sevens squad ready to rumble in Queenstown
Phillip Rollo
A youthful back-line will look to spark the Tasman team to its highest ever finish at this weekend’s Pub Charity National Sevens Championship in the absence of star player Tevita Koloamatangi. Speaking just days before the Queenstown tournament, Tasman captain Shawn Begg highlighted the impact that his team-mate’s loss would have on the Mike Kerrisk-coached side, but says the team is still confident it can beat South Canterbury and one of either Wellington or Auckland to progress into the next phase of the competition. “If we can get ourselves into the top draw for the second day then anything can happen,” says the former Tasman Makos halfback. “We’ve got quite a young team mixed with a bit of experience so we’re pretty excited. Tevita is a massive loss to us, he’ll be hard to replace.” The news that vice-captain Dan Hyatt would also miss the trip south means Tasman will only carry three forwards, those coming in the form of Tasman
Mako Vern Fredericks, Tasman Under-20 flanker Dan Hytongue and former Nelson College first XV flanker Daniel Baxter. But Shawn believes the key strength will be the young back-line, with speedsters Ryan Setephano, James Lowe, Mitchell Scott and Kim Bateman likely to see plenty of game time. Sione Holani, Kaide Whiting, Trael Joass and Fletcher Matthews make up the rest of the squad. With one more year left at Waimea College, Fletcher will be one of the youngest players to feature at the tournament. “Our strength is our back-line but we should be quite a fit team down there too. Being young and having nothing to lose and without many other teams seeing us play, the other teams won’t know what to expect from us.” Shawn will also act as a co-coach for the Tasman women’s team alongside Cyril Collier. The women have added some new faces to their squad since surprising Otago at the southern zone qualifying tournament in Timaru late last year to qualify for Queenstown, but Shawn admits it will be a big step up, as it is the first time the side has ever played at a national

Both men’s and women’s tournaments I think they’re capable of mixing it with will be broadcast like on Sky Sport 1 with the North Island teams. Karen Carey Hands up if you have ever been to a New Zealand Superstock Championship! For those of you sitting with your hands down get along to the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on the weekend of January 11 and January 12 when the Nelson Speedway Association host the New Zealand Home Loans NZ Superstock Championship to see what you have been missing. One of the best things about this championship is that like Forrest Gumps’ box of chocolates you never really know what you are going to get. One race can be pure speed and
amazing driving skills, the next can be a brutal full on assault on fellow competitors. One thing you can be sure of is that the best of the country’s Superstock drivers will put on one heck of a show, with their purpose built full contact race cars, and the crowd will go home from each night absolutely buzzing. If you think I’m exaggerating just a little bit in order to entice you trackside, ask one of your mates with their hands up what keeps them travelling from one end of New Zealand to the other to attend what is arguably one of the premier events on the speedway calendar. So how does it work? The drivers get their first taste of Nelson clay when the club holds an

official practice on Thursday from 6-8pm. Entry is free and we encourage those who haven’t been to speedway before to come down, check out the facilities and have a close up look at the cars. On Friday the competitors present their vehicles for a thorough scrutineering to ensure they are safe and meet the strict specifications set out by Speedway New Zealand. This is also a free public event and is being held opposite the WOW Museum. Please note that Mitre 10 Mega are adamant they do NOT want people parking in their car park so a spectator parking area is adjacent to the scrutineering venue. The racing gets under way at 7pm Friday January 11 when the field of approximately 75 cars

is split into four groups. These groups then race three heats to accumulate points. The top six point scorers from each group automatically go through to the finals on Saturday night. The final two places will be filled by the top two placed in a second chance repercharge race. On Saturday night the top 26 drivers compete in another three heat championship. All points from the previous night are wiped. As with qualifying their start positions are determined by a marble draw which will be held on the infield after introductions. Every driver will have a front, middle and rear start. The driver with the most points gets to carry the 1NZ number for the following twelve months.

In addition to the prestige of attending a National title there is over $20,000 in total prize money up for grabs over the weekend. The entry list! With over 70 entries, including the defending champions Joe Faram, Kerry Humphry and Shane Penn, teams will also race current stockcar champion Peter Rees and North Island champion Graeme Barr when they roll into town. Our 17 local competitors are certainly pitting themselves against the best but we have had three New Zealand Champions out of the Nelson club, two of which will be back this year hoping to be on the podium once again. For a complete list of entries go to www.nelsonspeedway.co.nz.
In addition to the New Zealand Home Loans NZ Superstock Championship the club is also running the Superstock Stampede for non qualifiers, a grand slam event for stockcars with an estimated 50 entrants trying to qualify on Friday for Saturday’s finals and a full complement of support classes. Racing starts at 7pm however if you do not have a pre purchased ticket or you want the best spot get there very early. Gates open at 4pm and entry costs $25 for an adult, $10 for children 5 to 15 years, family passes for a maximum of two adults and three children $50 and pensioners $15. Children under 5 get in free.
