Creativity wins chef award Andrew Board When Nik Dellabosca first entered the Up and Coming Chef competition two years ago he finished “dead last” and left feeling pretty disappointed.
Fast forward to Sunday morning and Nik was struggling to keep the smile from his face as the young chef beat out five other Nelson chefs to win the New Zealand King Salmon Up and Coming Chef Award for 2012. The award is part of the Nelson
Hospitality Awards and was held in Nelson. The competition saw the six chefs from some of Nelson’s top restaurants arrive to a “mystery box” of ingredients.

PROTEST ON TRAFALGAR: Richard Wairepa and his grandson Harlem Wharakura at the protest march down Nelson’s Trafalgar St yesterday. Around 30 workers from Talley’s Affco meat plants in the North Island travelled to Nelson to protest at the homes of Talley’s owners and then marched in Nelson, they were joined by around 200 Nelson workers. Talley’s has locked out 1000 meat workers after they refused to accept changes to their collective agreement. Photo: Rosie Thomsen.
Free blood pressure tests If shopping raises your blood pressure you may want to swing in for your free test before you hit the shops. This Saturday the Stroke Foundation, assisted by St John Ambulance and Rotary will be providing free blood pressure checks to shoppers at New World Nelson and Pak ‘n Save in Richmond. The tests are being held between 10am and 2pm and aim to raise awareness about the importance of getting your blood pressure checked. Anne-Marie Fowke-Stayner, of the Stroke Foundation says this is a great opportunity for people to have a quick, painless check.

“We all lead busy lives and it can be hard to make the time for something as simple as a blood pressure check, but it could end up saving our lives. It’s easy for high blood pressure to go undetected. Most people with high blood pressure have no symptoms and therefore have no idea there’s anything wrong. Often the first they know is when they have a stroke or heart attack. She says it is important to have it checked regularly and this weekend will give people a chance to get the first one done while out shopping.

Love stories highlight wedding expo Rosie Thomsen
Ill in a hospital bed in Africa, Lisa received the welcome news that she and her husband Shannon Wild have won the Jens Hansen Love Stories competition. Married in February, the newlyweds weren’t present as the announcement was made at the Nelson Wedding Show. Lisa’s parents Russell and Cindy Holden were proud to accept the prize on the couple’s behalf. Many happy couples took advantage of having everything they’d need to plan their big day under the one roof. Jenny Walton, Nelson Wedding Show owner and manager, says numbers were on par with last year’s show, with around 570 people coming through the Trafalgar Centre. Brides to be and their entourages came from all over New Zealand to find out what Nelson, Marlborough and the Abel Tasman have to offer as a wedding destination. “We had one bride come down from Wellington for the day; she said what an amazing day she’d had and that she’d thoroughly enjoyed herself, which is really great,” says Jenny. Lisa and Shannon weren’t the only winners, with prizes and giveaways gifted to many who attended. Cindy Windleborn of Richmond scored the online door prize, while Martin Clark of Nelson edged out 80 other entrants to win the $200 voucher from Liquor King’s competition for the blokes, with a guess of 725 beers in the car, one off the correct total of 724. Many other prizes and giveaways were donated by exhibitors, including some hidden under random seats at each of the fashion shows. “The exhibitors are what make the show,” says Jenny. “I can put it all together, but the way they present themselves makes it what it is. I take my hat off to them, they do an amazing job.” Many local businesses are already re-booking for next year’s show.

Dog lovers force u-turn Andrew Board A protest down Trafalgar St and more than 700 submissions has forced a rethink by Nelson City Council on its dog control policy. In February around 400 people marched on Nelson’s main street with their dogs to protest proposed new by-laws that would make it illegal for dogs to be let off their leads in certain areas – including the popular dog-walking area of the Maitai. That protest and the wave
of submissions that followed appear to have found their mark with councillors last week drafting a new Statement of Proposal which will now be signed off by council staff before it is again put to the public for consultation. Deputy mayor Ali Boswijk accepted the council should have spent more time “talking” with the wider community before drafting the original Statement of Proposal but says the new proposal shows councillors have listened to the community. “This is good news. We’ve
taken into account people’s feedback and are responding accordingly. Ultimately, the dog by-law we are proposing will take a default position where dogs can be off-leash everywhere, except areas which are identified as prohibited or on-lead.” The new proposal still tightens up where dogs can be allowed to run free though, and submitters spoken to by Nelson Weekly say they will read over the proposal before commenting, but they will likely have a say via fresh submissions.
Tattoo heaven draws big crowd Shirts and even pants were removed to reveal intricate works of body art at the Tattoo Expo, with hundreds converging for Ink'd 2012 to share and celebrate their designs. Tattoos have bucked their negative image in the last 10 years, becoming more about self expression and creativity, says organiser Brendon Benjamin. "Tattoos are no longer just skulls and crossbones and guns and daggers, we've actually got some amazing portraits and one off designs coming through." The hosts, Club Waimea, were "a wee bit skeptical at the start," but they were so blown away with the event that they have put their hands up as hosts for next year, says Brendon.

BROOK PHOTO COMP: Nelsonians and visitors are being urged to take an autumn walk to the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary – and take their cameras with them. The Sanctuary is extending its photo competition, with great prizes including cameras and camera equipment, vouchers, tuition, Brook Sanctuary memberships and photography books. Photos may be of plants, landscapes, birds, water, people, whatever you like – the only criterion is that the photos must have been taken at the Brook Sanctuary. Please make sure your files are at least 300 dpi; no larger than 6Mb and email your photo by 5pm Thursday, 31 May to photos@brooksanctuary.org.nz. MALE VOICE CHOIR: From the Jersey Boys to Queen, the Nelson Male Choir is stepping up a pace in its concert "May Fever" next Sunday at the School of Music. Freddie Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody" rubs shoulders with Robbie Williams' Angels and a bracket from the Jersey Boys album. On the lighter side, the choir romps through "Java Jive" and the Drifters' classic "Under The Boardwalk". The concert is at 2pm on Sunday.

Hard road for learner drivers A change to the driving test has seen a huge increase of people failing to obtain their license, but a Nelson driving instructor with more than 20 years of experience says the road will be safer because of it. After nine weeks and nearly 9,000 tests conducted under the new regime, the overall pass rate is currently sitting at 41 per cent, up from 38 per cent for the first month of testing, but well below the pass rate of around 80 per cent under the old system.
But Nelson driving instructor Kevin Bannan says the old test was “far too easy” and knew of drivers obtaining their drivers licence and then crashing on the same day. He says learner drivers need to go through the right channels when learning to drive, with the new test encouraging drivers to clock up 120 hours on the road before they sit their test. Every learner driver that has been through Kevin’s driving tuition in the past nine weeks has passed the test. “The standard of drivers going on the road
now is a lot higher. The problem with the old test was some drivers were able to fluke a pass and then they’d end up crashing on the same day,” says Kevin. “That causes family and parents a lot of money in repairs and the carnage.” The restricted drivers licence test is now 45 minutes long, allowing for only two “critical errors.” That is a change from the previous test which was only ten minutes long. The full drivers licence test is now 25 minutes long, allowing for only one critical
error. “[The change] is a good thing. The drivers getting put on the road are a lot better. The reason the people are failing is because they haven’t had enough city driving and they haven’t been taught enough knowledge.” NZTA acting chief exectuvie Stephen Town says the new test is more challenging but expects the pass rate to continue to gradually increase as the message filters through to more learner drivers that they need more preparation and practice.
New art exhibition really is childs play Phillip Rollo Richmond Picture Framers is launching a very special art show to give local children 12 years and younger the opportunity to exhibit and sell their own artwork. The show is going to be held at Reflections Art Gallery at the World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum. It is the first time that the gallery has exhibited children’s art. Gill Starling from Richmond Picture Framers decided to organise the art exhibition especially for children, saying it is “unusual to see young artists’ work properly framed in a gallery.” To be part of this special event, children need to submit their own work on A3 paper only to Richmond Picture Framers by
May 31. While it is restricted to A3 sized paper, it can be a painting, a drawing, a collage or a photograph. Henley School student Jessica Thomson, 8, was one of the first artists to enter. She used acrylic paint to create a piece inspired by one of her colouring books. “Well I have a colouring book with cupcakes on it, so I decided to paint something like that,” she says. The unenviable task of selecting artworks for the show falls to three of Nelson’s most respected artists; Anne Rush, Lloyd Harwood and Steve Fullmer. The exhibition will run from July 1 to July 21, to coincide with the school holidays, Richmond Picture Framers will be framing the best works for the exhibition. For more information, call 544 3993.

The fashion parade was stunning with The Rock Box girls looking amazing in their gorgeous dresses, we also had KOOKY dresses on display for the all important mother of the bride, and of course the handsome Barkers Men. The store this week I would like to introduce is The Body Shop. Upon entering this store your senses are filled with gorgeous smells, and I never know whether to head for the body butter or their incredible range of makeup, which I love and wear myself. I find their liquid mineral foundation perfect for my skin, and another favourite is their mascara. I always have in my handbag and actually in my kitchen drawer their hemp hand cream, it is incredible, you really must try it for yourself. Another favourite of mine is their Japanese Cherry Blossom range, which has body lotion, shower and bath gel and body mist. This lightweight moisturiser softens, smoothes and hydrates the skin leaving your skin delicately scented with the decadent Japanese cherry blossom fragrance. I invite you to come and meet Karen and her incredible new team. Have a fantastic week, and I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island

Red Cross launches new service Andrew Board Red Cross Nelson is celebrating its awareness day by encouraging Nelsonians to give back to their community. Today is World Red Cross Day and the local branch is showing a film about its founder to celebrate. But the organisation that also runs Meals on Wheels, a charity shop in Nelson and runs first aid courses amongst many other things, is hoping locals will help grow one of its newest programmes. Last month it launched the Community Visitors Service that sees people go into local rest homes and spend time with one of its residents. The objective of the Service is to improve the quality of life for residents in aged care facilities who have limited family and social contact. A Community Visitor befriends a resident of an aged care facility, who has been identified by the facility as being lonely or at risk of isolation. Janet Rowland was the first Nelsonian to sign up to the programme and has been visiting two residents at The Wood Retirement Village for several months now. Amy Wilson, of Red Cross Nelson, says she would like more people to come forward and also donate around an hour a week to helping improve the life of others. She says there are currently residents waiting for people to come and spend time with them in Nelson, Stoke and Richmond. “It’s a really worthwhile programme and we hope it will spread to cover rest homes all over the region,” says Amy. Janet says she is thrilled she started the programme and is enjoying the experience. “For one you meet some new friends. If you are a people person, you will love it. I retired several years ago and have time to give back so I thought this would be a good way to do that.” She meets two separate residents at The Wood once a week and says she usually takes them for a walk or just spends time chatting with them. “Both of the people I see cannot speak very well but they have a lot of character and I’ve got to know them very well.” Amy says those wanting to find out more about the programme can contact her on 546 5012 or amy.wilson@redcross.org.nz.

Local people with local knowledge Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory. As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born. Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens showroom in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.
When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen. Ask our friendly staff for details.

Hangi raises cash for playcentre
The pit was dug for a hangi, but will enjoy a second life as a sand pit for the children at Stoke Playcentre. The men from the centre, fathers and grandfathers of the children, pitched in to dig the pit on the centre’s lawn, where 230 meals were put down for the hangi fundraiser. Food from the night was
donated to the centre, with chicken, pork, mutton and roast vegetables on the menu. Every meal was claimed, with the invitation extended to the whole community. Tracey Green of Stoke Play Centre says she is really pleased with how the night went, and the process to get it together was just as enjoyable, as it
was a chance to get the centre members and their families together. The hangi was the start of the fundraising project for a sand pit, with $1,100 raised for the playcentre. “The night was a great time. We’d like to thank the generous people that supported us with donations,” says Tracey.
All the ingredients came together at the Lioness Club of Nelson’s annual fundraiser. Donated sugar and fruit were made into 150 jars of jam for Meals on Wheels, with more jars filled for ongoing fundraising. Yvonne Kleiven, Mary Haynes and Mary Goodman were part of the team. Photo: Rosie Thomsen.

Museum photo triggers info Another photo printed from the museum’s glass plate negative project has sparked a reader to come forward with information. Last week a photo of a lady golfer was published in Nelson Weekly. The following day the historian of the Nelson Golf Club came forward with information on the photo. The glass plate negative project is run by the Nelson Provincial Museum and sees two of the collection’s images printed each week in Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly. Museum CEO Peter Millward says the goal of publishing the photos each week is for more information about the photographs to be shared with the museum so it can share more about our region’s history. Nelson Golf Club historian Mike McQuade says he was waiting for a golf photo to make its way
into the paper. “There are a lot of our photos in the museum’s collection so I was waiting to see when one of ours would turn up and as soon as it did I called the paper.” Mike was not able to supply the museum with the name of the photographed lady, but could provide plenty of other information. The photo was taken in September 1923 during the NZLGU Championship. The winner of the competition was Miss Vigor-Brown of Napier, with Miss Watson of Manawatu finishing as runner up. It was the second time the tournament was hosted by the Nelson club. Peter says this sort of information is invaluable to the museum. “This is exactly why we wanted the photos published, this adds tremendously to our collection and the information is fantastic.”

Great range of garden gifts 51 Collingwood Street (opposite Mobil)
As we come into yet another month it was very timely that I received a call from a friend of mine to let me know that “his girls” were putting on a great show. As we go to print Mother’s Day is upon us, so George’s girls were flowering at just the right time. Yes, the “girls” are his amazing range of exhibition chrysanthemums that he tends with great pride and care in pots under shelter in his Nayland Rd home. George will be well known to many in Nelson as he has been involved with the Nelson Horticultural Society for many years and is a very keen and knowledgeable gardener. His love of these beautiful flowers has been a long-standing affair. In George’s words "if flowers were music the chrysanthemums would be likened to a full orchestra". Its history in the Far East goes back more than 1000 years. The legend of the chrysanthemum originated in China when a young girl asked the spirit how long her forthcoming marriage would last. She was told that they would remain together for as many years as there were petals on the flower of her wedding dress. She hunted far and wide but could only find fivepetalled flowers. At last she found a flower with 17 petals and with her hairpin she divided each petal into four. This was the first chrysanthemum and she lived happily with her husband for 68 years. Since then the flower has been revered in the East as a symbol of purity and long life. From the legend it should also be a sign of female ingenuity. I must say the exhibition varieties are a far cry from the still lovely “pot or garden mums” which are a perfect Mother’s Day gift. These standard varieties are much easier to look after and do not often require staking, although you do have to watch them for rust. Some of the smaller late flowering chrysanthemums are

Tips
Thisks wee
• It is still not too late to plant bulbs. Lily of the valley (convallaria majalis), hyacinths and tulips, as well as daffodils can be popped in, as the ground is nice after the recent rain. Tulips can be planted right up until June in Nelson and they also benefit from being put in the fridge for a few weeks in a paper bag to “chill out” prior to planting. • As dahlias die down it is time to lift the corms and divide them. Keep only the strongest corms and look for any diseased or rotted spots. Dry off and dust with flowers of sulphur before storing on trays of slightly damp bark or compost. • Gladioli corms can be lifted and treated the same way. • Polyanthus that have been sheltering from the summer sun can now be lifted, divided and replanted into their winter positions. A teaspoon of dried blood in the planting hole will get these off to a good start. • Plant lilies now and protect the new bulbs with a thick layer of fresh mulch or pea straw. • Buy Mum some potted colour to give her pots a winter makeover and to also dot some extra colour around the garden. • Still not too late to pop in some broad beans –they will need staking so plant in a block so they are easier to tie. I’m off down to Christchurch for some more Nana time – can’t wait. Have a very happy Mother’s Day weekend and stay safe and warm and enjoy being spoiled…. you mums have all earned it!!

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• The Australian Navy arrived Friday so we wish them an enjoyable visit to Nelson. Five container ships with the big ANL Banalla were still here on Friday, a log ship departed, a fruit ship completed loading and left, the cement ships came and went, the fertiliser carrier arrived for survey, and 14 large fishing vessels moved around the port. • Ignorance is no excuse and to see people row a raft under the bow of a ship, then climb onto the bulbous bow of a ship was a classic display of this. There is a 50m exclusion zone around all ships and berths. Do not ignore it. • You can run but now you cannot hide. Port Nelson recently upgraded its camera system along with installing new cameras in new locations in order to ensure the security on the seaward side of the port. The Harbour Master has access to all these cameras and subsequent evidential footage. Please obey the laws. • You may have observed extra activity in the harbour on Friday as the port conducted three “man overboard” drills, one from each of its large vessels. Fortunately all crew performed extremely well and I was saved each time. Many thanks to those that took part. Would you know what to do if one of your guests or crew fell overboard? • The water is cooling as is the weather so don’t forget to dress warmly and always wear a lifejacket. If in doubt- don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.
LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
Mayor Miccio is wrong in his suggestion that the “flyer” mailed out with the voting papers for a Maori Ward poll is accurate. It is not! Even council staff are now backtracking on the information in the flyer and are providing alternative facts over the correct procedures that should have been followed right from when this engineered proposal was railroaded through council. Mayor Miccio spouted at election time how transparent and informative a council under his leadership would be. Yeah right. Ratepayers have spent thousands of dollars in court costs supporting the council in efforts to justify its incompetence. We are sick of paying for such incompetence, and the “poll” is shaping up to be yet another shambles which will probably end up in court seeing our mayor is so adamant that everything is fine and dandy. Well it ain’t and perhaps it’s time us ratepayers stood up and demanded resignations for such incompetence, not us, continually picking up the bill for avoidable and unnecessary legal process created by illegitimate acts and arrogant abuse and ignoring of statutory requirements. The result of the poll is now irrelevant – it has been corrupted, and our mayor needs to realise it. Errol Millar, Nelson.

A win and a loss for Stoke Stoke Power Signs retained the top spot in Senior 9 when it accounted for Nelson Old Girls Rebels 28-19 despite a very shaky second quarter when it was outscored 2-7. Stoke made a number of changes in the second spell which took time to settle however once they found their rhythm it was full steam ahead – winning the remaining quarters 9-3 and 10-6 to take the final score to 28-19. Zoe Cookson, playing goal defence before moving to keeper in the second period, was the mainstay of Stoke’s performance. She had excellent body position, to gain the rebound and deny Nelson Old Girls the second opportunity. Savanna Adams was solid in defence and was competent in bringing the ball through court. Erin Musgrove was industrious in the mid court and put in some superb ball to her shooters. Kelsey Power and Joy Smythe displayed a nice understanding while averaging over

Young wing attack, Keely Kira put in a sterling performance – she was strong off the line and worked hard to get to circle edge. Emily Ulutupu toiled at wing defence before moving into the circle. Stoke Richards Woodhouse made a great start against Jacks Red in the Senior 2 game to be up 8-6 at the first break however two injuries soon afterwards upset its flow. Jacks “warmed into the game” and went from strength to strength when shooters Ange Scoble and Nikki Gordon switched bibs. Nikky was a better target and she received an abundance of ball from feeders Robyn Leonard and Mel Ramsay. Defenders Jan Lynch and Kath Merritt won a lot of ball defensively, and with the team “in sync” paved the way to the 35-19 win.

Club day joy as Stoke records wins Club day was a good day to be a Stoke rugby supporter. The club had its best day of the season so far, winning its division one, two and women’s grade games while the sight of a dozen junior teams running around Greenmedows was a sight to behold. The only blip was the third division side losing to Wanderers 41-0. Stoke’s top team capped off the day after its division two side beat Riwaka in the dying minutes. Stoke dug deep and put together a real gritty performance which was exciting to watch. Although at times it almost seemed they were just making things hard on themselves with simple errors both on attack and on defence. Trailing by two points in the dying minutes Stoke kept the ball in hand and kept threatening to break through Riwaka’s staunch defence. Then Riwaka conceded a pen-
alty from 35m out. Still suffering from a heavy knock to the jaw Stoke captain Jacob Curtis stepped up to take the shot to win the game. Final score Stoke won 18-17. Tries to James “Woody” Herand, two to Bret Dickens, a penalty to Jacob Curtis.
his charges working on defence and counter-rucking at training during the week. Marist duly obliged and managed to score two tries to Stoke’s one early in the first half, after some good forward play which starved Stoke of possession. Stoke wasn’t done however, At the same time and muscled up the women's team met Marist Stoke forward Lofi Ula hits the ball up against at the breakdown in an attempt in a spirited en- Riwaka's defence. Locks Karly battle up front and coach Cyril Collier had Larking and Holly Turnbull in particular battled hard to provide front-foot ball to their backline. Winger Stephy Omundsen relished this and broke through to score in the corner after a well-worked move. Stoke ran in four more tries late in the game to secure a well-deserved 39-17 win, which included a try, three conversions and a penalty to first five-eighth Jenna Eathorne. Jenna also shared player of the day honours with No 8 Abbie Cederman.
Greenmedows was humming on Saturday morning with around a dozen junior teams playing at home on club day. Above is the under 11 Stoke Red team in action against Wanderers on Saturday. Stoke lost the tight game 37-24. The Stoke players are from left; Adam Healey, Thomas Kingsbury, Josh Greer, Jonty Taylor (with the ball) and Baydn Walker. Photo: Andrew Board.
In the divison one clash, it took a last gasp stretch by Tevita Koloamatangi to score the winning try in the final act of the game. It proved the difference between Stoke and Ri-
waka in an evenly matched contest. Stoke after enjoying its first victory of the season last week against Waimea looked to back it up, against a determined Riwaka who were also coming off their first win of the season. Putting together a front row proved to be the biggest challenge pre-game, but Craig Groome, Mitch Hewitt, Lyndsay McPhillips and Ray Packer answered the SOS, and without doubt, inspired Stoke, to a hard-fought win. The Stoke backs gave the ball some early width, stringing together some fantastic touches to put Pat Hafili-Reid under the sticks, Jake Beleski provided the extras, also adding a penalty to lead Riwaka 10-nil at the break. After the break an early mistake was capitalized by Riwaka which duly found itsway to the tryline. Jake took the Stoke lead out to 13-8 with another well struck penalty, before Stoke came under some real pressure and Riwaka again found the line tying the game 13 apiece. The game swung back and forward over the final twenty minutes, with both sides creating opportunities only to be repelled by tenacious defense, thwarting scoring chances, before standout Tevita nailed the game with a well-earned try. Final score 20-13. The Stoke forwards were well served again by hard working locks, Ben Douglas and Steve Kerr complemented by a mobile and confrontational Ray Packer who is enjoying taking his game to the opposition. Lofi Ula provided some well-needed go forward, and captain Stu Tunniclif again led from the front with another vigorous performance. Tevita’s strong running and power proved the real difference and handful for the opposition. Matt Gaines again performed well under pressure behind the scrum with Jacob Beleski’s boot at first five giving Stoke the necessary field position. Matt Falloon had an excellent game at fullback. Chad Lowrie and Hafili-Reid ran strongly with a formidable partnership in the midfield.

Inter-club trophy flies back to Nelson Nelson Aero Club have the bragging rights and the silverware to match, beating Motueka Aero Club at the annual Harold Brough Memorial Trophy on the weekend – although it was a flip of a coin that decided which side of Mapua the trophy was heading. The Harold Brough Memorial Trophy, named after a former Nelson Aero Club patron and Motueka Aero Club stalwart, pits Nelson’s two nearest aero clubs against each other as they take part in two separate challenges, which they have been doing so since 1975. Both clubs ended the day on 12 points, following the low flying competition and the forced landing competition at the
Motueka Airport. Each club gets to pick one challenge based on Flying New Zealand’s actual competition disciplines. They are the same challenges rookie pilots must complete when learning to fly a plane. Eight individual competitors took part for both clubs, although the top scores are only tallied between the podium finishers. Motueka Aero Club’s Alistair Hart won both challenges, collecting ten of the 12 points himself. However, Nelson’s Justin Sturrock and Lesley Shaw supplied seven themselves in the low flying event with Steve Rule finishing second in the forced landing. Justin Sturrock, Murray Bensemann and another Motueka flyer shared third place, sending the result to a coin toss decider. Nelson Aero Club captain Graeme Kinzett says the coin toss was merely a formality with the defending champions getting the rub of the green if scores are tied. But Graeme says he threw the coin toss option on the table to make it “fairer and more fun.” Graeme, who is a national champion in the bombing discipline where pilots throw a plastic bottle out of the plane onto a target, says the club is thrilled with the result. “Everyone enjoyed themselves and we’re happy that we can keep hold of the trophy for another year. The standard of flying was very Nelson Aero Club members Maurice Tighe, Justin Sturrock, Steve Rule, Leon high. TASMAN RUGBY LEAGUE
Nelson Weekly Your Community Newspaper
IN BRIEF COLLEGE RUGBY: The Press Cup started in similar vein to last season for two Nelson sides with Nelson College posting 41 unanswered points to beat Burnside High School, while Nayland College slumped to a 41-0 defeat at the hands of Christs College. Both games were played in Christchurch. The two sides will now face each other this Saturday at 12noon in the first of the local derby games. The match is set to be played at Nelson College. FOOTBALL: AMI Nelson Suburbs were back in the winners’ circle on Saturday, surpassing Western 5-1 in Christchurch. Four different players got on the score sheet with Mike White netting his first goal since joining the club in 2012. Gagame Feni scored a brace while fellow strikers Brandon Kay and Ben Wright also contributed to the tally. Nelson Suburbs will take on Richmond Athletic at Saxton Field in the first round of the Chatham Cup. The game kicks off at 1pm on Sunday. FC Nelson will face Wakefield FC in the Chatham Cup’s other Nelson match. That game is being played on Saturday at the Wakefield Domain at 3pm. RUGBY: A James Lash drop goal in the 79th
minute has seen Galbraith Group Nelson edge Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers 1614 at the Brightwater Domain on Saturday. Wanderers looked to have sealed the victory with just five minutes left on the clock when Jackson Harvey kicked a conversion from the sideline following Sione Holani’s second try. But Nelson’s star first five stole the show, making sure Nelson take the Moller Cup for leading the standings after the first round. They remain unbeaten.
