Race for city’s top job is on Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio has joined the race for the city’s top job. Aldo announced his decision to re-stand on Friday citing unfinished business. He will battle for the position with current councillor and former deputy mayor Rachel Reese and former police chief Brian McGurk, both of whom have already announced their intention to stand. Whispers around city hall indicate few other campaigns will take on the current contenders but councillor Ian Barker earlier this year told the Nelson Weekly he was leaving the possibility of the running open. Last week Brian stated that he would keep rates at less than 1 per cent in his first year as mayor and has previously said rates affordability was a key goal he wanted to

achieve. As the only non-serving member of the three candidates he has the most ground to make up but he has a high profile as the former area commander for Nelson Bays Police and is already staking his claim as the “rates affordability” candidate. Rachel says Nelson people are looking for a “positive change maker” and that people are over the “spin and hype”. “[People] want a council and mayor who understand how to govern the city effectively on a “no surprises” basis. Nelson people are looking for a mayor and council that works with

to grow my afro. I just thought I would and then Toby said he wanted to grow his as well. After that we decided we should grow it for charity,” he said.

“Uniforms are a good idea because they keep everyone equal. Not everybody can afford the coolest clothes.”

Growing hair for charity FROM PAGE 1 it for charity,” he says. After only a month of fundraising, Nathan has collected $500 and has been donated a signed Hurricanes jersey, from James Broadhurst to auction off. His goal is to raise $10,000 for CanTeen - the organisation that supports young people with cancer. The fundraiser has gained public interest through the Facebook page ‘Grow the Fro 13/14’ with over 170 likes. Other people have also volunteered to be a part of it, with some of Nathan’s other friends offering to grow their hair with Nathan and Toby. “At the moment there are three other guys. Two guys in Wellington are going to grow theirs. I have another mate here who is just going to grow his hair and facial hair,” says Nathan. However, as many cancer survivors know, hair does not grow back overnight so this will be a long but “exciting” journey for Nathan and friends. So far, he has

grown just over an inch of hair but says when it starts to get longer the process will quicken. “It’s starting off slow. Last time I grew my afro, once it got longer I could start combing it and then it started to grow quicker,” he says. Nathan was diagnosed with hodgkin’s lymphoma back in late 2011, after a lump formed on the right side of his neck. After Nathan was diagnosed he spent four weeks in hospital getting chemotherapy. He then spent a further six months getting radiation. Although Nathan only lost a relatively small amount of hair, he wanted to raise money for friends that have suffered with the same type of cancer in the past. “I had mates that had the same type of cancer as me and lost [all of] their hair.” Nathan has been in remission since May last year. To help Nathan with his journey to ‘Grow the Fro,’ a bank account has been set up for donations. The details are: N W NUKUNUKU 12-3141-0360900-50.

It is this passion, commitment, enthusiasm and leadership that will ensure our city continues to develop and achieve its goals,” he says. “Rome wasn’t built in a day, but the bricks that have been laid over the past three years show significant progress.” Six of the 12 current councillors have publically backed Aldo for re-election in an advertising campaign, an indication, he says, that councillors support what he’s doing for the city.

Schools stand by dress code Nelson principals are refusing to take a backward step over dress code breaches. The stance comes after some criticism from parents and students about the dress code at Nelson schools. But schools spoken to by the Nelson Weekly say the codes are there for a reason and they will not be changing them. The most common dress code breaches include facial piercings, excessive makeup and unnatural hair colours they say. But at least one parent believes the rules are unfair after her daughter’s new hair colour, described as “blue tipped”, was deemed “unnatural” and resulted in a phone call from the school asking for the hair to be re-dyed. Dayna McElhinney, who is a year 10 student at Nayland College, had her hair dyed only two weeks ago and is refusing to revert. Her mother Maxine Hornell says she did not think blue tips would be an issue because some senior students had bright pink hair. “There are other students with more hair colour than what is on the end of hers. It’s not that she’s done it to be rebellious, it’s a fashion statement,” she says. Maxine believed there would be more leeway if Dayna was one year older and in mufti every day. “She’s decided she’s not going to get rid of it and

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

she’s her own person. They tell kids to speak their mind then they get in trouble for it.” Nayland College principal Rex Smith admits senior students are given more leeway, because the mufti was there for students to express themselves. “For sure. The whole thing about the mufti is giving them opportunity to manage themselves,” he says. “There are two standards and the junior students will get to mufti eventually.” He says the unnatural hair colour rule was more about drawing the line, rather than picking on individual cases. “It doesn’t impact on their learning but we have lines in the sand that we draw and we expect students to meet those standards just like anything else in society.”

Nelson College deputy principal Ron Kelly says the school has a definite uniform policy extended to hair and jewellery. “You’re allowed to dye your hair as long as it’s natural and there’s no jewellery, we do allow rats tails although we’re not the type of school with a ‘short back and sides’ policy as long as it’s tidy,” he says. Waimea College deputy principal Graeme Smith says unnatural hair colour was not an issue and says piercings were being phased out, although the number of students with tattoos is increasing. He believed a tidy uniform worn by each student would limit bullying. “The easiest way to minimise bullying in a school is put them in a uniform. Having a uniform stops a lot of bullying because there’s none of this comparison stuff. If you keep it simple then it’s easy to track.”

Sinead Ogilvie fUTUrE of coUncil bUilDing: Nelson City Council has resolved to consider an alternative option for the future of the Mediterranean Food Warehouse building. At last week’s infrastructure meeting, another option for the council-owned building was approved, to neither demolish or strengthen the building in the 2013/14 financial year. AnnUAl fAir: The Nelson branch of Save the Children is holding its annual fair on April 13. This year will be the 50th anniversary of the local sector and organisers are hoping for another successful fair as it will be the perfect way to celebrate the milestone. The fair is a major fundraiser for Save the Children and runs by selling donated goods. Some of the profits this year will be used to help fund educational projects in the Solomon Islands, enabling children to develop better literacy and numeracy skills. The fair is held at the Stoke Memorial Hall and runs from 9am until 12noon. nEW ciTizEnS: At the end of last month 30 Nelsonians were offically sworn in as New Zealand citizens. There were British, British-Swiss, German, Filipino, Moroccan, Myanmari, Pakistani, Samoan, South African, Swedish and Swiss.

An investigation has been launched into the costs of outdoor seating in Tahunanui after an article in the Nelson Weekly raised concerns from local business owners. Outdoor seating currently outside the Sands Fish & Chip shop appears to have gone unnoticed for five years until current owners Bruce Maxfield and Roy Gray approached Nelson City Council to put more permanent tables there. They were told the consent fees for the tables would be $2240 plus GST every year. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says council staff will be relooking at what the costs

are for outdoor seating to retailers in the area with a view to making things “both fair and equal” to all retailers. But that could mean higher fees for some of the other retailers in the area. “Staff are also looking into any other people who may be illegally using council land that haven’t been paying for it,” he says.

The dead-end footpath outside the Sands Fish & Chip shop in Tahuna. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Bruce says although he hasn’t seen council staff at the shop yet, he welcomes the news that they will be looking into the situation and he hopes they will “come to their senses” and rethink the fees that if enforced will see them fork out more for their tables than their annual rates bill. “We have tried to do the right thing by being honest and are hopeful the council will change their minds and look at the unique situation before taking it further,” he says. “There’s probably no other area like it in Nelson, it is unique in the way that it is a dead end and more of a destination than a footpath. Each person who uses the pathway is visiting the businesses, using the area for recreation, not walking by.” Councillor Paul Matheson says he has come across a similar situation before and says although he knew the Sands Fish & Chip shop would be required to pay a fee, the amount surprised him. “That’s what happens when people get honest. If it was me personally I would just carry on, but we don’t own the land so therefore we have an obligation to Land Transport NZ.”

Crime rates continue to drop Crime continues to drop in Nelson, according to new statistics released last week but a focus on drinking disorder has seen those figures skyrocket. National calendar year crime statistics were released last week and showed that recorded crime in Nelson Bays fell by 2.2 per cent with the resolution at 54.2 per cent, above the national average. The largest decrease came in illicit drug offences, which fell 44.4 per cent, with a resolution rate of 88.7 per cent.

Property damage offences also fell 5.7 per cent and sexual assaults and related offences fell 33.3 per cent while robbery, extortion and related offences fell 41.7 per cent. Public order offences were up by 5.8 per cent. Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Steve Greally says the rise in public order offences was no surprise. “That’s a direct result of the zero tolerance approach we’ve taken to the drunken disorder and liquor ban breaches in the central city. I do expect that to start

trending down in future results as what I’m seeing on the streets is that people are getting the message that anti social behaviour won’t be tolerated.” Steve says unlawful entry and burglary type Steve Greally offending had risen by 11.2 per cent and theft was up 3.7 per cent. “Those figures can represent the work of

a small group of prolific offenders. Our challenge is to identify those individuals and take them out of circulation. In recent weeks we have taken into custody a number of people who will feature heavily in those statistics.” Steve says the decline in overall crime could be attributed to the prevention model of policing. “Our focus has been on preventing crime and crashes from happening and I think we’ve made some really positive progress.”

Filthy fundraiser gets down and dirty Hundreds of keen people took the opportunity of getting down and dirty on Sunday at the Honest Lawyer Annual Mud Run, and luckily enough the local volunteer fire brigade was on hand to wash them down. The second year of the event saw “a few hundred” people run through knee deep mud

around Monaco, raising money for the Stoke Volunteer Fire Brigade. Event spokesperson Ingrid Nicholls says the event was first created as a means to bring the community together. “And what better way than actually focussing on a charity. There’s no one more deserving than some of the volunteers so we thought why not help out the

Stoke Volunteer Fire Brigade,” he says. “The great thing is we don’t make it too long so it’s an event the entire family can do from preschoolers through to grandparents. That’s the beauty of it really, the fact anyone of any age can do it.” Ingrid says numbers were up for this year’s event and hoped that trend would continue.

Finally the weather is starting to cool down a little bringing thoughts of snuggling up in cosy coats and jerseys and gorgeous boots, so head down to Fashion Island this week to catch fantastic mid-season sale offers. Dotti has some fabulous autumn/ winter items in stock and is currently running a promo on knitwear – all at only $39.99! Broadgreen joins heritage week The Broadgreen historic house is joining in the celebrations during heritage week by marking its origins as a farmhouse with an educational exhibition. The house will open its doors for the Best in Show exhibition this weekend which is designed to showcase the farming heritage embedded in its history. Broadgreen house was orginally used as a 100 acre mixed farm by first owner local

businessman Edmund Buxton, who had a special interest in farming. His interest in breeding acorn eating pigs is said to be the reason why there are so many oak trees on the site and his passion soon developed into a thriving and important part of Nelson’s rural industry, buying and selling to local farms. When Broadgreen was sold in 1900 to the Langbein family the rural tradition

continued as the land became an apple orchard until 1965. Broadgreen was also landmarked for many years by a large grain silo, a testament to the cropping history of the farm. The public is encouraged to visit the Best in Show, Harvesting the Fields of Broadgreen exhibition which will be open from April 6 through to May 5 from 10.30am to 4.30pm every day.

Adult entry is $6, seniors $5 and children $2. Heritage week runs from April 13 to 21 and will feature different events and exhibitions around this years theme of harvest and transport. To find out more about the different events and locations showcasing Nelson’s history visit www.itson.co.nz/2013/4911heritage-week-2013.

Residents push council for crossing support

Addo Mulders Snr at the Basin Reserve on Rocks Rd where he wants a refuge to be built for those trying to cross the road. Photo: Andrew Board.

A petition supporting a refuge on Rocks Rd has been handed to Nelson City councillors at the same time they debate another crossing less than a kilometre away. At a council meeting last Thursday Addo Mulders Snr spoke to the councillors about the need for a refuge in the middle of Rocks Rd. He says people often park in the Basin Reserve and have to “run the gauntlet” to try to get to the other side in heavy traffic. The petition was organised by a Neighbourhood Support group in the area and had 101 signatures on it. Addo says he wants the councillors to negotiate with the owners of the road – New Zealand Transport Agency

– for the refuge, similar to the one further down the road at Wakefield Quay. At the same meeting residents further along Rocks Rd, towards Tahuna, told councillors that plans for a refuge there should be scrapped. They urged the councillors to reconsider their support of the project, saying the loss of 13 car parks would stop some people from swimming and fishing at a popular spot. Addo told the Nelson Weekly they were two separate issues and he hoped the council would consider the petition and “make the road safer for local people and tourists”.

Pop up seating for Bridge St

Pop up seating is coming to Bridge St after councillors decided to put money towards the project last week. The relocatable seating will feature a deck, seating and some planters and will cover the area of one car park. It will be rolled out on Bridge St this year and is seen as a short-term solution to beautify the area. The council committed $12,000 towards the project which is “in no way” a replacement for the proposed Bridge St upgrade which is earmarked for the next financial year, says mayor Aldo Miccio. “The feeling around the council table was that we wanted to try out a new approach that would offer some improvement to Bridge St now, as we know it will be a while until we get the full upgrade underway. This creative solution will use a minimum of space and minimum budget.” The design has been sketched by artist and councillor Mike Ward and if successful the council says it could

be used anywhere around the city. Business owners on Bridge St are keen on the idea, according to Aldo. “Our initial discussions with some business owners have been really positive. Some have already volunteered to have the new seating area in front of their premises.” Councillor Rachel Reese says there are better ways to spend $12,000 and she thought there should have been better consultation with more Bridge St businesses.

‘Eco-village’ spots for sale

Andrew Board

The last two blocks of land in Nelson’s own “eco-village” are now for sale, five years after the village was established. The Braemar Eco Village is on the site of the old Braemar Children’s Hospital, behind Waimea Rd and is the brainchild of Nelson man Kim Merry, before he passed away just a year after it was bought. The village features nine plots of land with each of its owners also owning a stake in the common area which is used for gardens, stock, orchards and community buildings. Resident Annabel Norman says the six original owners have now legally subdivided the land, allowing for two new plots to be sold. “We wanted a better legal structure than the old communes where everybody shares the land. So that everybody has title to their section and the common area has been set up into a company and everybody has an equal share of that. So it becomes easier for people to come in and buy out of it.” The 4.4 hectare eco village is a mixture of old buildings from when Nelson College owned the land, to new eco-friendly, state of the art houses. It has around a dozen hens, vegetable gardens and fruit trees, some sheep and a cow. The eco-village is within walking distance of the city, with views of the mountains and the sea, and with plenty of land to develop orchards, grazing and communal gardens. “It’s a fluke of history really that this rural

Most of us work off site in a range of professions and we wanted to be quite clear on ownership and on an exit strategy.” The village already has plenty of tenants including Fulton Hogan, the Nelson Envi-

ronment Centre and yoga classes in an old building. And it has a meeting space in an old horse stables, also owned by the village. The two sections are on the market, waiting for the right people to come along and join the Braemar eco-dream, says Annabel. You can find out more about these at Trade Me CZY006.

Spending still on the rise Spending in Nelson was up again in March, despite the traditionally slow Easter weekend falling in that month for the first time in three years. Nelson recorded a 2.6 per cent increase in spending compared with March last year, according to the latest figures released by Paymark this week. While that increase is modest, Paymark CEO Simon Tong says Good Friday and Easter Sunday both fell in March and they are traditionally two of the slowest spending days of the year. “Often because these days are in quick succession, it can have a slowdown effect on the overall spending growth for that month.” In March, $80.4 million was spent through the Paymark network in Nelson, up from $78.3 last year. Simon says the Easter impact was obvious across all sectors. “However, when you compare the Easter spending period with the five days of Easter in April 2012 we actually had a much more positive result, with spending up $48 million or 8.8 per cent nationally.”

Museum exhibition now open

Sinead Ogilvie

The new exhibition at the Nelson Provincial Museum offically opened on Saturday with early visitors giving it a resounding pass mark. Roman Machines was offically opened by museum CEO Peter Millward and exhibition chief Luigi Rizzo on Friday with it opening to the public on Saturday. For Bede Dodd-Edgar, 7, of Atawhai, being one of the first to go through the exhibition was “cool” and he says

he was excited to explore the exhibition with his father Kevin after becoming interested in ancient Rome after reading a book. Kevin held a special interest in the exhibition too as an engineer and says it is amazing to be able to see something like it in Nelson. “We are both fascinated.” Roman Machines has come from Italy and will feature in four New Zealand venues including Nelson. The exhibition features 50 different elements with 30 of those being interactive which Peter says is a big drawcard for

those wanting to get up close and personal with some of the most famous machines in history. “We are presenting a highly interactive exhibition. It is really a chance for people to get their hands on a piece of history.” Peter says he expects more than 15,000 people will pass through the doors to view the exhibition and he has already had huge interest from local schools, with 2500 kids booked in to view it. Roman Machines will be at the Nelson Provincial Museum until June 30.

Twilight train rides

Nelson’s model trains have been given the once over ahead of this weekend’s night time train rides and train driver Noel Dyer says he is looking forward to the crowds of families set to climb aboard. The annual event is put on by the Nelson Society of Modellers members on the first weekend of daylight savings as a fun event for the community. Each year the event attracts more than 1000 people, most of whom head down in their pyjamas to experience “the thrill of the trains at night time” says Noel. “We do it for the sheer enjoyment of playing with the trains at night time, seeing the little kids smiling. We are big kids ourselves really.” You can catch a ride on one of the model trains this Saturday down at the Nelson Society of Modellers at Tahunanui Beach between 6pm and 9pm, $1 per person.

MAKING IT HAPPEN & MOVING NELSON FORWARD “Aldo has the question of what is best for Nelson at heart and as such I’d stand by him to the hilt. His leadership qualities, business experience and honesty in my opinion make him the only one for the job, and for at least the next couple of terms at that.” COUNCILLOR JEFF RACKLEY

“There is no question that Aldo has the ingrained ability to get on with everyone and pull teams of people together. We have a team of strong and diverse individuals, sometimes opposing, but most definitely working together. Aldo is an excellent facilitator and gets the best out of people in order to find solutions. The collegiality that we have in Council really is the best it’s been for some years.” COUNCILLOR PETE RAINEY

“I believe that to have three different Mayors in three consecutive terms would not be in the best interests of Nelson. Aldo has the best of intentions for the City and has worked hard for all sectors of the Community. He is positive, energetic and receptive to considering new initiatives and ways of working; attributes which I believe are essential given the unsettled economic landscape and changes to the Local Government environment.” DEPUTY MAYOR ALI BOSWIJK

“I like Aldo’s unfailing optimism and enthusiasm and his energy. He is a really good bloke to work with and a really great team leader.” COUNCILLOR MIKE WARD

“Aldo’s collaborative leadership skills and attributes enable us to deliver real results across organisational boundaries. He is the new generation of leader, focussing on the unique strengths of each participant, sharing control and not afraid of good ideas wherever they originate. Aldo inspires a leadership culture that will ensure a very positive, vibrant and prosperous future for Nelson.” COUNCILLOR RUTH COPELAND

“Aldo has inspired me to stand up for what I believe in, and has created an environment where every individual has a voice, which is always heard and received with integrity and humility. Under his leadership we are working together towards a common goal, and this is the reason why I love coming to work each day.” COUNCILLOR KATE FULTON

"It's an honour to be your Mayor and I'm asking for your vote. We're not there yet and the last thing we should do is lose momentum. The ball's in your court Nelson" MAYOR MICCIO

about community spirit and he was pleased to see yet another local organisation benefit from the generosity of the local community. Health School teacher Helen Trevena says she was blown alway when approached by Prince Albert locals and asked if they could use funding. "It is such a kind gesture and it is amazing that they are doing this for the community. Some of these kids are really sick and isolated from society, their friends and family, so this will make such a huge difference in the lives of these students." Peter McCoy, also a Health School teacher thanked the efforts of everyone who participated. "It's fantastic and I can already think of several kids who will immediately benefit from this." Tim Spear won the tri-egg-athon, entered with his family and says they took part because they liked how community minded the event was. "We are local so we thought we would get involved. It is a great event." Mike says the next Prince Albert Shield challenge would hopefully be held in six months.

Over the years we’d been together, Jill jokingly asked me to marry her on more than one occasion. The next time she asked, I wanted to make sure that I had the right answer - and the ring - ready. Taking notes over the years on Jill’s jewellery likes (notes were needed as a bloke’s memory is not the best when it comes to this sort of thing), I wandered into Jens Hansen one lunch time and in an unprecedented show of romanticism, I set the ball rolling on the design and creation of a stunning diamond solitaire ring. Having the surprise ring in my possession, and ready waiting for the next time that Jill would pop the question proved to be very difficult and it’s fair to say that I gave in, not wanting to wait any longer. An early stroll one Saturday morning saw us walk to the top of the centre of New Zealand, and hidden in my backpack was the ring along with a champagne breakfast. At the summit I dropped to one knee (not quite due to exhaustion) and asked Jill to ask me the one question that she’d repeatedly asked in the past. Jill asked, I said yes, Jill’s jaw hit the floor when presented with the ring and one or two onlookers clapped and that’s where the happy story should have ended. However, the drama was still to unfold and the proposal morning progressed from an exciting first proposal on the top of the Centre of NZ, to a tipsy champagne breakfast, to forgetting that

Jill Williams and Adam Womersley. fingers sometimes shrink in the cold, to a foolish champagne fuelled request to check if the ring would stay put if Jill shook her hand, to seeing the ring fly off her finger, bounce off the path and into the scrub, to rapid sobering up and paniconly-just-held-in-check, to desperate treasure hunting and thoughts of metal detectors and insurance numbers. After what felt like an age of heart-stopping scratching through the undergrowth, and with the help of some kind strangers, I found the ring lying under some brambles, held it up high, and asked Jill if she'd marry me - again. Two proposals in one morning, and both times they were answered with a very happy and relieved "yes".

Tri-egg-athon raises cash for local school The pub charity event that started over a few beers last year has raised more than $1100 for a local organisation that helps sick children. After the success of their fundraising efforts in December, Prince Albert Hotel locals came out in force to take part in a tri-egg-athon, the second Prince Albert Shield challenge aimed at raising funds for a local charity. The tri-egg-athon featured a run, a cycle and an egg and spoon race and attracted 30 entrants who took part in the teams event. The funds raised through the event went to purchasing the Nelson Health School an i-Pad to use as an educational tool. Health School is a nationwide school which caters to acutely ill children from age five to 18 who cannot attend school due to severe health or mental health issues. The Nelson school has two trained teachers who visit up to 30 students in hospital or at home a week to keep them up to date with school work and ensure they do not fall behind. Prince Albert Hotel owner Mike Walker says the gesture was all

That's what you get for being honest and trying to do the right thing!! Totally stupid!! Katherine Batty.

The local councils really want small businesses to do so well don't they?? And of course that is sarcasm! Isn't there enough businesses struggling at the moment without these sorts of extra costs. Nicky Williams. I read your article about the $2000 fish 'n chip shop table with interest. I think if the picnic tables are not impeding pedestrians and are placed on the grassed area that the business owners say they maintain then I can't see what problem that would cause. If people decided to sit on their bums on the grass to eat their fish n chips, which I suspect happens now on sunny days, would the council also object to that and move them along? I doubt it. I believe there does need to be some control of business using council controlled areas otherwise there would be a free-for-all resulting in a big mess, perhaps some good agreements and discretion could be implemented in cases similar to this one to enable a happy outcome for all. Eric McPherson. The council charges $1000 if you want to alter your washing line, what do u expect? Philip Garnett.

Towards the end of the article Neil Simpson says that there are not many ducks in the area any more, and he blames changes in agriculture and then adds that there is still plenty to shoot. This may be, in part, true but did he stop to think that maybe hunters are shooting too many also. I walk and bike a lot in the area and have noticed that there is very little bird life on

brought to you by our waters and this is a great pity. We have a pair of paradise ducks that visit our property regularly, they are beautfiul birds and great characters - why anyone would want to take their lives for "fun" is beyond me. It is like with whitebaiting, and the fishing business, people complain that there isn't as much out there anymore but don't stop and think that maybe if they didn't catch etc this year, that next year there would be more stock. It is thoughtless and greedy. I would like to think that there is bird life for us all to enjoy for years to come. P Poole.

Volunteers sought for Vietnam build Habitat for Humanity is like a bug and once you’ve got it, you can’t stop. That’s the words coming from Andy Farmer and Paul Shutte, who are preparing for another overseas journey to help build homes for those in need. Andy and Paul are searching for 15 open-minded, willing Nelson volunteers to join them and 150 Kiwis in Vietnam in August. The location for the build will be in Tien Giang, an area prone to flooding. Residents in the area cannot afford to constantly repair their homes and it is hoped the 25 new homes will transform the community. The pair first got involved in Habitat for Humanity during a trip to Nepal and say it has been a real eye opener. “For me I would’ve never gone to

these places unless I was on a Habitat-type build. It’s a different way to visit a country and you get involved within the local community,” says Andy. “We’ve both got the bug, we both wanted to do more and now we’re team leaders and hope to take a team from Nelson as part of the New Zealand contingent. This is a great excuse to travel.” While it’s labour intensive, Paul says volunteers are not required to have any particular skills. “It’s not technical building but it is pretty labour intensive because you’re mixing the cement by hand. You just have to be prepared to get stuck in and get dirty.” For more information contact Andy on 547 3109 or Paul on 542 4555.

Nelson students stick by Christchurch Lauren Wafer-Kiddle

More than two years on and the effects of the earthquakes are still evident amongst Nelson students living and studying in Christchurch. Since September 2010, there has been a total of 11,733 earthquakes recorded in the Canterbury region. Although the activity has decreased, as of late, the constant stressors are still managing to affect students in Christchurch. For many, 2011 was their first year at Canterbury University. However, what they didn’t know was that the February 22 earthquake was a sequence of many large earthquakes they would encounter over the next two years and a half. Just one day into his studies, past Nayland College student Stephen Roberts did not know how to react when the lecture room he was in started shaking. “I [had] just started my first class [at Canterbury University]. I was in the commerce building, which is still closed. I just remember the lecturer had just got up to speak, we had our introduction and all of a sudden she was falling over and everyone was screaming. Parts of the ceiling collapsed and we got out of our lecture [theatre] to find glass and bits of concrete everywhere,” he says. Past Waimea College student Benjamin Buckendahl was on the second floor of the twelve storey James Hyde Library, which was closed for several weeks after the earthquake. “The ground was shaking so hard that I actually had to stop and collect my balance.” Canterbury University closed that day and did not reopen until March 14. From then on, students and lecturers were forced to

Students, who were still struggling, mostly with post traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, were offered compassionate consideration, something that Megan Gibson took up. “[The earthquakes] affected my grades heaps. I found every time there was a little aftershock during lectures, [when I was] studying or in exams, I just couldn’t think,” she says.

Two years on, Megan is starting to realise the psychological effect the earthquakes had on her. “At the time, I think I was unaware how bad it affected me psychologically. It has made me more anxious and stressed, in previous situations where I would have been fine.” Stephen described the earthquakes as emotionally draining. “Every time you pick yourself up, the next one comes along.” However, the earthquakes have caused other problems at Canterbury University with some courses being cancelled and forcing students to look elsewhere.

Tal Meser has to spend his final year in Wellington, after his “Operations Research major got cut without any offer to finish the third year. If UC hadn't dropped my course, I would've stayed.” Leaving was not an option for many Nelson students who wanted to show their commitment to Christchurch and the rebuild. Although the past few years may have been difficult for these students, “people are trying to cope and look past the hazards and damage,” says Stephen. “You are making yourself part of the rebuild of the university and Christchurch.”

How long should my dentures last? It depends on the wearer and the materials used, but generally between 6 to 10 years. Over time, changes naturally occur in the mouth and supporting tissues. Bone recession, jaw related issues and general wear of the teeth all factor into the optimum life of dentures. At Nelson Denture Clinic we use the best quality materials and techniques to ensure your dentures last as long as possible. What are the signs of worn dentures? Overclosing of the jaw, characterised by pronounced creases in the corners of the mouth where rashes may occur, tip of the nose and chin closer together, jaw sliding forward, lack of lip support and dentures feeling loose are all signs that your dentures need to be checked. How often should my dentures be checked? Just like natural teeth it is advisable to have your dentures checked annually. Early detection and addressing potential problems can prolong the life of your dentures and avoid chronic jaw related issues which can affect your appearance and ability to eat certain foods. At Nelson Denture Clinic we are expert at detecting and solving your denture problems. We offer free check ups so don’t hesitate to take advantage of this offer. Who is Stevens Orchard Lawyers and where are you? We are a long standing firm that was established in 1935 and has just kept growing in leaps and bounds. We offer qualified advice on legal matters from our friendly and highly competent staff. We have just moved from Strawbridge Square to our lovely new premises at 459 Main Road, Stoke with plenty of parking at the rear of the building. We pride ourselves on our down to earth manner in giving the best possible advice on all legal matters and achieving the best possible outcome. Lioness club earns top award

The Harbour Master’s • Four container ships (two large ones), a deep draught log ship, a car carrier, a general carrier for steel and timber, and seventeen large fishing vessel movements around the port was the main shipping activity. • Many thanks to Port Nelson for moving the container ship out early on Wednesday as many yachts were becalmed in the cut at 1800 and the early movement avoided the conflict and allowed a race to continue. Wednesday night was the last race of this series and it surprised many that the wind dropped from over 25knots at 4pm to less than 5 at 6pm and changed to from the south. Such is the possible pattern over winter so all are advised to watch the weather as it can blow up just as fast as it fades away. • Two metre seas and strong winds over the Easter weekend caught a few of the unwary out, fortunately there was no casualties over the weekend. • The cold is the other creeping killer and with the advent of winter hours upon us, daylight saving finished Sunday April 7, the days are shorter and the darkness of night advances quickly. Don’t allow yourself to get cold, dress warmly and wear your lifejacket. You must also have lights on your vessel regardless of what type it is so please make sure you have the right lights and are easily seen.

TUESDAY 9 April 2013

Presenting the award was Zone Chairman Lion John Rodger and accepting on behalf of the Lioness Club of Nelson, President Yvonne Kleiven.

A local Lioness club has been awarded a trophy for excellence which has been discribed as a “great honour”. The Lioness Club of Nelson was awarded the Iain Drewett Memorial Trophy, which is awarded for “excellence in Lionism”. The trophy is given to Lions, Lioness and Leo clubs in the top of the south, including Christchurch and the West Coast, or district 202E.

The Lioness Club of Nelson received their award for all the fundraising and charity events that they have participated in over the last 12 months – including a $25,000 donation to Ronald McDonald House in Wellington for an expressing room for mothers. They were also acknowledged for the GoZone at Tahunanui Beach and most recently a $1500 donation to the Nelson Rescue Helicopter Trust.

If you vote to change ‘marriage’ we will vote to change you

1

AN ENFORCED CULTURAL CHANGE

In response, we are inviting you and your family to make an important pledge to yourself – to withdraw your vote from any politician and party who is willing to be part of this enforced cultural change.

Marriage, in the process, will become meaningless. We will be using the word to describe something else – not naturally or traditionally created, but conceived by politics and political correctness.

If you want politicians to get the message, go online and sign the Marriage Pledge:

THE PROCESS HAS BEEN SHAMEFUL

2 3

HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO

In less than a month, it’s highly likely that a majority of politicians will commit one of the worst acts of cultural vandalism by redefining one of our oldest and most fundamental institutions - marriage.

• The politicians have ignored thousands of your submissions. • They have ignored calls for a referendum on this massive cultural change - at the same time as demanding a referendum on state asset sales. • They have demanded their right for a conscience vote, yet have voted to ignore the consciences of celebrants, registrars, churches hosting weddings, and others in the wedding industry. • They are ramming this bill through without giving it the due consideration and debate it deserves.

R “I will not use my electorate vote to vote for an electorate MP who supports changing the definition of marriage” R “I will not use my party vote to vote for a political party whose leader supports changing the definition of marriage”

IT TAKES LESS THAN 2 MINUTES Just tick the boxes and fill in your details. We’ll send each electorate MP a list of voters in their electorate who have committed to holding them to account. To make your pledge, go to the website address below. It’s a tangible way to make politicians listen to you.

Tasman Classic pushes top cyclists

Nelson cyclist Karen Fulton climbs the Spooners Range in the second round of the Benchmark Homes, Tasman Classic Cycling Series. Photo: Blair Hall/Imagepress.co.nz.

Full time triathlete Tom Davison had his best road racing result winning the second round of Benchmark Homes Elite Cycling Series in Nelson over the weekend, the Tasman Classic, with an impressive display of climbing in the last 500 metres. Tom won the 132 kilometre race in three hours and twenty four minutes, making his winning move at the top of a tough 20 percent final climb that led to the finishing line, leaving Tom Hubbard, Tim Rush and Scott Thomas unable to match his climbing over the final 200 metres. “We were all looking after Robin [Reid], who was clearly our team leader, but his legs were pretty stuffed after his solo effort in winning the GrapeRide yesterday, so the team started looking after both of us and it paid of,” says Tom. The course had several tough climbs, including the four kilometre long Spooners saddle, and this was where the first significant breaks occurred which saw a group of six riders get away to be chased by another bunch of 14 riders which included the series elite leader Brad Evans. Two teams members of the New Zealand team's pursuit squad that finished fifth in London, Jamie Nielsen and Lauren Ellis, combined to escape from the

field early on, establishing a lead of over seven minutes at one stage, until Lauren outclimbed Jamie to win in three hours and three minutes, and claim the series overall leaders jersey. “We managed to get away after the first climb and it felt like we were back on the track really, in the TP (team pursuit) racing with each other, just lapping it out until the finish and then it was everyone for themselves and I managed to get the win, so it was great,” says Lauren. Jill Ellison of the Tasman Wheelers says from a club’s point of view, the event went extremely well. “The weather was perfect and the racing was exciting. The residents of Totara View Rd came out to watch the finish and were very welcoming and tolerant of us taking over the top of their road for which we thank them,” she says. “It was a long day for the people doing the work (13 hours for most of us) but well worth it when an event goes as well as this one and for the level of racing it brought to our area. For the first time Opus who manage the State Highways in our area and TDC allowed us to set up our traffic management operations to stop the traffic as the races were going through key intersections which worked very well for all concerned. We very much appreciate their cooperation."

Stoke loose-forward Lilo Savea off-loads the ball in the tackle of Waimea's Tristram Nelson halfback Loui Harvey dives over to score a first half try against Wanderers on Hoddy and Josh Rutledge. Photo: Andrew Board. Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Stoke, Nelson record first up losses Andrew Board and Phillip Rollo The club rugby season started with a hiss on Saturday, unfortunately for Nelson and Stoke it was the country teams making all the noise. Accessman Stoke travelled to Richmond to take on fierce rivals Waimea Old Boys but were stung by the try-scoring nous of fullback James Lowe, who bagged a hattrick. Down 20-0 after 20 minutes, Stoke made a better fist of the second half scoring two tries by the three quarter mark and closing the gap to just four points.

Peter Grigg expects to be title favourites. “I believe they’re going to be the team to be chasing after this year. They seem to be well organised as a club and as a team, they were well prepared,” he says. Nelson have lost a host of top players with flanker Shane Christie joining Tom Marshall at the Crusaders, Tasman Makos Andrew Goodman and Robbie Malneek have gone to ply their trade in Europe while another core group of experienced players including James Foster, James Hadfield, Jake Cooley, Dan Hyatt, Steve Alfed and Kim Bateman have all gone elsewhere.

But their run came too late and Waimea scored a late try to win the game 30-19. Stoke coach Willem Van Niekerk says he had some "loud words" with his players at half time but was happy with how they fought back in the second half. "They showed character and that was pleasing. I was very happy with how we came back into the game." In Brightwater, a depleted Nelson side lost 39-19 to Wanderers after going the entire 2012 season unbeaten. Despite holding their own in the first half, Nelson fell behind against the side coach

But even with the considerable number of departures, Peter says the side was still confident it could beat Wanderers and praised the efforts of first five James Lash. “We were unbeaten last year so we’ve got a winning mentality but we also have to be realistic going forward. Regardless of what team we put out I think there will always be pressure on Nelson to perform and there is always that expectation.” He says the side struggled at lineout time, and spent a lot of the match on defence, which means the set-piece will be the key focus at training over the next two weeks.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

The first dusting of snow has hit Mount Arthur and the air temperature has dropped a few degrees along with the sea temperature. This means the fish will be thinking about moving out slowly into deeper water. Fortunately the Easter weather was pretty good and a lot of people got out fishing. We found that rod fishing for snapper was a bit slow and decided on the second day to deploy the longline, which is a great help to see if there are in fact any fish about. For those of you not familiar with how long lines work I will run you through the process. Snapper generally feed while the tide is running. When long lining from boats or kayaks, sets over clear bottom parallel to rocky outcrops or coastline can yield good fish even when the water is clear. Normally, for small boats and kayaks, a 25 hook recreational longline requires just a 25cm hand spool which is compact and very easily handled. On larger boats a 3:1 ratio geared beach reel can be fitted with an aluminium pipe around half a metre long to fit into a rod holder. The first clip on the reel is clipped to a marker buoy with a flag or a large brightly coloured float and dropped over the back of the boat. Motoring along at between 500 and 800 revs, or about 4 or 5 knots, the dropper line peels off the reel or hand spool. At the bottom end of the dropper line is a cord connecting the dropper line to the pre-stoppered hook section. In the centre of this cord a small loop is tied and provides for the placement of the first grapple. The baited traces are removed from the rack and clipped over the mainline one at a time. Two stoppers are let to pass before the next trace is clipped on. Be careful to maintain your boat speed. Speeding up will make it difficult to ensure the traces are connected securely and at the correct spacings.

Lenny Smith with two Tasman Bay snapper caught on a setline. When the 25 traces have been connected to the mainline another grapple is attached to the second cord and the back dropper unwinds from the reel or hand spool. At the very end of the dropper another clips secures the line top the reel. Unclip it from the spool and attach the second float and then toss it over the back of the boat and leave the line to fish for an hour or so. To retrieve the longline simply motor back up to your first flag or float. As each trace is removed from the mainline they should be stored back on the trace rack ready for the next set. From our set we landed six 40cm brim which we otherwise wouldn’t have caught on the rods. The spat farm has been fished hard over the last few months and it would appear that the big kingfish have been a bit shy and only rats have been sighted. The odd big snapper is still about but it seems that the fish might be slowly heading up the coastline. The fringes of the marine reserve in the Abel Tasman have also been fishing well with some nice tarakihi, brim and up to 40cm blue cod being taken. Large schools of kahawai have been sighted underneath working birds and have been up to 3 kilos in size. D’urville has seen groper now starting to be caught along with some huge kingfish.

Strong start for Nelson teams in football comp Having seen enough of the bottom end of the ladder last year, Nelson College made sure it would spend the first weekend of the new season at the top of it, winning 6-1 against new boys Wakefield. Wakefield have entered a side in the Nelson Pine Industries division one competition for the first time and despite the 5-1 half-time score line, Nelson College coach Dave Shaw believes the physical Wakefield side does have some potential. “To their credit they came out in the second half and made a real fist of it and pressured our boys better,” he says. Dave says Wakefield sat off in the first half, allowing Nelson College to play its fluent passing game. “I guess it was a bit of an unknown as to what Wakefield were going to present so our focus was on ourselves and we went out there and got amongst it and played some lovely football. The flow of passing and speed was probably a bit much for them in the first half.” Midfielder Hal Fish had a strong game in front of a solid back four while new Solomon Island import Kevin Obed also impressed on debut. “Kevin was influential in terms of being involved in two of the goals and setting one up himself, but it was an excellent team performance and

defensively we were resolute despite Wakefield having their fair share of possession. In other results, FC Nelson Sprig & Fern drew 2-2 with AMI Nelson Suburbs at Guppy Park and FC Nelson NBS Colts went down 3-0 to Richmond Athletic at Jubilee Park. Colts coach Steve Bignall says the young team fought hard but were out-muscled by the more mature Richmond players. "I thought we did ok, there are a lot of parts of our game where we are going to fall down because of the physicality. They battled away and lost 3-0 but it could have been worse. I was very pleased that they didn't throw the towel in. This year will be a very big learning curve for a lot of them." Some of the players in the team are only 14 years old and Steve says they are nice footballers and he confident of seeing improvment throughout the season. "My only worry is to keep them improving, if I can improve them I'll be happy. If at the end of the season we've picked up a couple of results we would have done really well. We're not looking at this season, it will be three years down the track for some of these guys but it is an important development time for them."

Haven to host 'spectator friendly' sailing regatta Andrew Board Nelson’s two sailing clubs have joined forces to host the Burnsco Nelson Harbour Sailing Championship this weekend. Boats from small optimists to 35 foot yachts will take part in the two-day event, which will be staged entirely within Nelson Haven, providing spectacular viewing for those on the shore. Organsier Kevin Skelton says the regatta is a first but it’s good to have the Nelson Yacht Club and the Tasman Bay Cruising Club coming together for the event. “It started just trying to get the two clubs working together so we thought ‘why not have the last weekend of sailing for the season for this race?’” Teams will be selected on Friday night with each team featuring boats from different classes. “We’d like to have it so adults sailing the big boats will be cheering on the young kids in their team and vice versa. It will hopefully create a good atmosphere and is a chance for people to see all sorts of boats racing in the harbour.” Points from race wins across all classes will be added to find a winning team.

Map of where the racing will happen in Nelson Haven on Saturday and Sunday. Viewing will be best anywhere along the waterfront from the Boat Shed to Sealord’s and Kevin says the Nelson Yacht Club, along with neighbouring restaurants will all be open. “Some of the restaurants can provide some great places to have a meal while watching the racing in the harbour.” Kevin says the idea behind the event is to bring sailing closer to the people and it will be held every year. Racing starts at 11am and finishes at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

383 local women complete triathlon The 26th Taylors Nelson Women’s Triathlon attracted hundreds of local women on Sunday where Bridie Edwards emerged as a name to watch in the future. Bridie was out on her own and holding a commanding lead after the 5km run and also had Maitai Valley to herself heading up to the Motor Camp turnaround on her bike. But it wasn’t long before Carol Cooper caught up and after the swim she was a comfortable winner. It was a sweet victory for her having previously posted runner up and third placing, Elisabeth Hifenhaus securing

second place with Kim Waddell, Amber Lawson and Shanee Anderson close behind. The walk title was always Wendy Healey’s to lose but her three discipline strengths showed as she easily retained her crown. Lyn Smith may be a few moons older but she was fast enough to claim second as Gill Slater and Chante Whitehouse had a good battle for third, with Slater taking out the prize by a few strokes. The Taylors Nelson Women’s Triathlon 2014 is scheduled for April 5 with all results from this years event available on nelsonevents.co.nz.
