Tahuna to lose police station
Tahunanui will lose its community police station later this year, with the Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club set to move in before summer. The move was confirmed by police last week. They say “dwindling numbers” and a more comprehensive policing service means the station at Tahunanui beach is a waste of police resources. Nelson City Council owns the building and is currently working with police and potential new tenants, Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club, about a handover date. The police lease expires on November 30, but they say they are happy to negotiate an early exit. Nelson Surf Lifesaving club captain Ed Steenberg says the club expects to be in “well before” summer and it will mean the club doesn’t have to haul equipment up Rocks Rd from its current base at the Rescue Centre every Sunday. “We need to be at the beach, we

He says the club would ultimately like a new facility on the beach side of the car park but sees the move to the old police building as a “stepping stone” in the right direction. “The building isn’t where we’d like to be long term, but short term it does give us a presence at the beach.” Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the

He says the council would like to see how the club goes in the building before committing to building a facility on the beach side of the car park. “For the council there is more of an impact if we put something on the beach side, as opposed to the park side. station for the last 12 months and it is only staffed by volunteers. But he insists the suburb will not be missing out by the move. “This doesn’t mean that people in Tahunanui will receive a lesser service, quite the contrary. We’re actually providing a much better service.”
The Nelson Repertory Theatre group opened the curtains on the first show of their Love Broadway & Hollywood Too musical to a packed house on Thursday and enthusiastic crowds have been filling the audience every night since says musical director and production manager Adrienne Ford. “It’s not often we are treated to a show of this scale and glamour, and it’s something the director really wanted to do. A show with the big sets and the big costumes.” With just eight weeks to rehearse, Adrienne says the cast and crew of 60 have put in a huge amount of effort to put on a showstopper. The final shows will be held this Thursday evening at 7pm and Saturday at 2pm.

The Nelson A&P Association has continued to operate two earthquake-prone grandstands for major events without warning the public of the potential risks, despite one stand ranking at just six per cent in an intial assesment. Opus filed an initial earthquake procedure [IEP] on the northern and southern grandstands at Richmond Park at the association’s request 12 months ago. The evaluation, which was leaked to the Nelson Weekly last week, shows that the north grandstand, built in 1920, returned a new building standard per cent rating of just six, which is well short of the recommended 33 per cent threshold. It makes it one of the most earthquake prone buildings in the region. The southern grandstand, built in the early 1960s, also fell short, at 17 per cent. Although the IEP deemed both structures as earthquake prone, John Harwood, property man-

ager of the A&P Association, says he has no concerns about them. “We’re going through a process. At this stage we’re not broadcasting this all around the world,” he says. “It hasn’t got to that stage where we need to do anything because we’re still in the early [stages].” The next step in the process is likely to be a detailed structural assessment [DSA], as recommended in the Opus report. A major harness racing event and the Nelson A&P Show have been held since the IEP was complete. But Nelson Harness Racing Club president John McKenzie believes it would not be an issue if the grandstands were closed or had to be pulled down as temporary structures could be sourced from within the region. “I think they [the
A&P Association] are quite aware that it needs to be fixed and they’re going through the process of what cost is involved.” While he could not comment on this specific case due to client confidentiality, Opus project manager Alastair Wiffen described the IEP as a “cheap, let’s have a quick look” assessment. Alastair says if a building does not meet the 33 per cent in the intial test then a DSA is recommended. “Effectively the client doesn’t have to do anything. Morally and ethically they should and most building owners do actually do something [after the final test] because they don’t want the word getting out that their building is earthquake prone and they’re not doing anything about it.”

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz A Nelson musician says he has lost his ability to work after most of his performing equipment was stolen last weekend. And it has emerged he’s the second musician to be targeted in Nelson. Last year local rockabilly group Krazy Katz had $12,000 worth of their gear stolen from a trailer packed down their long driveway after performing a gig at the Vic Brew Bar. Lead singer John Jessop believes they were followed home before being robbed. “We live on a cul-de-sac and the trailer was down our drive, for them to know it was there they must have seen us loading it up after our gig.” Aaron Douglas believes he could be the victim of a similar attack. He plays in bars all over Nelson and performing is his job. He says his gear was stolen last weekend after performing on Saturday. He says the loss is a huge blow. “It’s like a builder or a mechanic losing all of his tools and not being able to replace them. I’ve spent years building it all up and feeling quite good about it. Now it’s all gone.” He says he’s had to cancel two shows already and has been lucky enough to borrow equipment from friends to perform over the weekend, but that will only last for so long. “I’m lucky I’ve got musician friends who are saying ‘you can borrow
Nelson musican Aaron Douglas has had the majority of his musical equipment stolen. Photo: Andrew Board. this and this’ but that’s a short term fix. These people that I’m borrowing gear from have taken time to own their own stuff and got it for themselves so I don’t want to take advantage of that. I’m lucky I’ve been able to in the short term.” He says after years of working and building up a collection of good quality equipment he has to start again. His insurance doesn’t cover the loss because the gear was stolen from his car, not from his home. John says insurance did pay up on their theft but they were warned they wouldn’t be covered if it happened again.
The i20
Aaron is still hopeful the gear may surface but is realistic and says it was probably in Christchurch within hours. “I need to keep working to replace the stuff, but I need the stuff to keep working so it’s a bit of a cycle. But I do have an avenue available, unfortunately that just means getting into a heap of debt.” Police fingerprinted the scene but say glove smudges were all that were found. They say it doesn’t appear the two incidents are related and ask that if anyone is offered musical equipment and is concerned about the “legitimacy of the seller”, to contact them.

John Key opens our cycle trail John Key visited Mapua last week as the first stage of the Great Taste Cycle Trail was officially opened. The Prime Minister spent the morning at Nelson Airport unveiling a sign that mapped the cycle trail, before visiting the cycle trail’s official partners in Mapua, including Apple Shed Café where he spoke about the benefits it will have on tourism in the region. Cycle Trails Trust executive officer Fiona Newey says John Key had been invited to “all of our other openings” but they had not worked in with his schedule. “It was about West-Coast Tasman MP Chris Auchinvole putting us on the map and asking the Prime Minister to please come and have a good look at the trail and celebrate with us,” says Fiona. “When he happened to be ready, so was the first stage of the trail and the sign at the airport too, plus the passports were launched so it was quite good timing really.” John Key is also the minister of tourism and Fiona believed it was significant to have him at the openin. The government had

initially pushed for cycle trails around the country to financially boost rural areas. “Nobody in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch got a trail and from the initial 54 applications only 18 trails were granted money from the $50 million,” she says. Nelson was granted $2.6 million and spent $500,000 of it on the Dun Mountain Trail with the rest going on the Great Taste Trail. Stage one of the trail, which is expected to be a big drawcard for tourists, runs from Nelson City through to Mapua or Wakefield. Fiona believed John was delighted to meet the official partners of the trail and was grateful he took the time to speak and pose for photos. “Everybody’s Facebook pages should be rocking this week. But the weather was perfect, being on the ferry and seeing how it worked was great and the Apple Shed Café is always a delight so I’m sure he had a good time.”

Mayor to pay for car parking Mayor Aldo Miccio is putting his money where his mouth is today and encouraging shoppers to head to the CBD. Between 10am and 11am this morning, Aldo will be giving out a $1 coin to the first 50 shoppers he sees taking advantage of the Free Parking
on a Tuesday initative. He says the idea is to reward shoppers for choosing to come to Nelson and encourage them to return on another day to use their parking money. He also hopes it will highlight his proposal to extend the free parking scheme to include
Mondays and Wednesdays next winter. Uniquely Nelson are right in behind Aldo’s free parking plans and have organised a team of parking fairies to hand out vouchers from local retailers to CBD shoppers every Tuesday for the next eight weeks.

Trust donates equipment to hospital Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of locals, a piece of stateof-the art equipment was handed over to Nelson Hosiptal on Friday. A $17,000 L-Dex U400 machine donated by the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust will be “incredibly valuable” to both staff and patients, given its ability to monitor early detection of lymphoedema, says Yvonne Ferguson, a physiotherapist who will use the machine on a daily basis. “Early detection and management of sub-clinical lymphoedema can reduce the long term physical, functional and psychological effects caused by a later diagnosis and delayed management of the condition”. Lymphoedema is frequently seen after lymph node dissection, surgery and/or radiation therapy, in which damage to the lymphatic system is caused during the treatment of breast cancer. The trust was able to donate

port of our corporate sponsors and all the people who came along to take part in BC4BC.” The trust hopes to raise further funds for future initiatives at this years Boot Camp on October 19.

Mayor fires back at Rocks Rd criticism The proposed cycling and walking promenade has taken a double hit this week with opponents labelling it “not acceptable” and a “complete lemon”. New Zealand Transport Authority and Nelson City Council are currently investigating the possibility of building a four metre wide promenade along Rocks Rd for pedestrians and cyclists. But The Waterfront Association has beaten them to the punch, releasing its own engineering report into the proposal and rubbishing it as “not acceptable”. In its report, the association says the development will mean a loss of all car parking, pedestrian refuges and bus stops on the road, creating a “traffic luge”. “You won’t be able to get off it unless you’re at Guyton’s or at Tahuna beach,” says TWA spokesperson Jeremy Matthews. The Waterfront Association says the only way forward is to build the southern arterial road, which would become a state highway, moving freight like heavy trucks, off Rocks Rd. “Only then can a proper promenade be built because Rocks Rd won’t have to be so wide to accommodate heavy trucks,” says Jeremy. Nelson mayoral candidate Rachel Reese has also put the boot into the plan, calling it a waste of money

and a “complete lemon”. “A very expensive lemon that benefits nobody but NZTA, who continue to be hell bent on removing parking and activity around our wonderful waterfront,” she says. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio supports the plan for a promenade and has fired back with both barrels saying both Rachel and TWA has ulterior-motives. “This is a load on nonsense, Jeremy Matthews simply wants the road to go through Victory and he thinks if we build the promenade there’s less chance of that. No car parks will be lost, there will be no threelaning. There will in fact be more car parks on Rocks Rd.” He says if the project doesn’t go ahead $6 million in government funding will be lost. “Other parties aren’t privy to all the information we have but it is public, so if people care to come to meetings they would have heard about this. If Rachel had cared to stay at the meeting rather than leaving in a huff she would have known about this.” He says people should wait until the findings of the study are released before trying to bring the project down for “their own gain”.

All set for art expo
Art Expo Nelson is returning to the Trafalgar Centre this weekend and organisers are promising it will be even bigger and better than last year’s inaugural event. With more than 3000 people visiting last year’s Art Expo Nelson it was immediately recognised as the biggest art expo in the South Island. But Nic Foster, Annie Leather and Louise Allan say there will be more artists, more visitors and more activities at this year’s expo. “We have 118 artists this year, up 20 on last year, and we have a space where children can have a go at creating their own masterpiece with Pammie
Moonlight in the Victory room,” says Louise. “We’re hoping for 5000 to come through the expo over the three days.” The trio behind the event say they were thrilled with the response to it last year and say they decided not long after it to go again this year. “We had 100 per cent positive response from the artists and the feedback from them was ‘yep, make it an annual thing’,” says Louise. The group were successful in their bid for a Nelson City Council grant and say they’re pleased with the number of people coming from outside
the region. “We have 35 artists from outside Nelson and Tasman and we already know of people coming from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch so hopefully it can attract not just local people but people from around the country.” As well as the hundreds of artworks selling from one hundred dollars to several thousand, organisers say there are plenty of other activities including a café and bar where people can take a break or discuss which piece to buy. Art Expo Nelson runs from Friday, July 12, to Sunday, July 14. It opens each day at 10am.

New group for Brook residents
A new community group has been established in the Brook Valley to give residents a greater voice when dealing with the council about what’s best for the valley. The Brook Valley Community Group was founded in the weeks after 75 people attended a proposal by Nelson City Council to upgrade roads and improve walking and cycling lanes in The Brook.
Since that Saturday in May, some residents have wanted a greater voice around what the council wants to do in the valley. They see the new group as being able to have more sway with the council on issues like the proposed upgrade, says one of the founders, Helen Black. “The meeting highlighted the need for local knowledge and input at an early stage
should not go ahead. “There is a need for the Brook Valley community to play an active part in decisions about how our narrow valley can cope safely with traffic movements. We have only one way in and one way out.” For more information about the group, contact Caro on 545 9318 or email helen. viola.black@gmail.com.

American cars rally for cruise Nelson slow to give back TVs A crowd of motor enthusiasts got revved up over the region’s finest on the weekend when local car owners went for a cruise around town. The second annual Independence Day Cruise was held on Sunday to celebrate all American vehicles and their passionate owners. Organised by the Nelson Hot Rod Club, the event was a huge success says coordinator Ian Jones, who showed off his own scratch built American replica on the day. Ian’s collection includes a 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Sedan, a 1939 Deluxe Sedan and a 1932 Hi Boy Roadster that was a project for three and a half years. His love for hot rods has developed over 40 years and he says it will definitely be ongoing. “I’ve been into them for years. I love the body styles and shape, and the fact there’s a V8 motor under the bonnet.” Tony Anderson of Atawhai says he was “very happy” to be showcasing his 1970 Dodge Challenger which was built from American imported parts. “The cruise is a chance for us to kick tyres, talk cars and be amongst fellow enthusiasts. It’s also just a good opportunity to get out and go for a drive,” he says.
Nelsonians appear to rather like their televisions so much that we’re not getting rid of them – or perhaps we’re just not getting rid of them properly. The Ministry for the Environment has just released figures showing Nelson is one of the worst regions in the country for using the TV takeback promotion. The government allocated a certain number of televisions in regions all over New Zealand where residents could hand old TVs over to be disposed of for just $5. Many regions have already filled their quota but Nelson has used just 29 per cent, according to the Ministry. It says that by recycling old TVs, residents are playing their part in helping to protect the environment from hazardous materials like lead. It says only 605 Nelson televisions have been handed in, with the region’s allocation at 2102. But they say time is not lost and people can still get rid of their old TVs at Nelmac on Vickerman St or Noel Leeming on Trafalgar St.

Car seats for 7 year olds tough for schools
A law change that will see children restrained in car seats until they’re seven years old could create a logistical nightmare for schools wanting to go on class trips. From November 1, a law change will see six and seven year olds using a compulsory approved car seat when travelling, which could restrict the number of class trips schools take, and even forcing them to walk or catch the bus instead. Nelson Principals Association president Don McLean says trips involving students

in the junior syndicate will be seriously affected. “For starters you can’t take as many kids in the car but there’s always the case when people turn up without car seats,” says Don. “So does that mean we’ll have to have car seats at school?” Don says he could see the point in having car seats as his own six year old son used one on longer trips. But he questioned the impact it will have on shorter trips. “When we go from Hampden St School to the museum or somewhere like that, it’s quite a big mission to get all the car seats

Tuesday July 2 Nelson Vivace Youth Brass Band are ready to take on the National youth band championship to be held in New Plymouth this month after a preview concert held at Nelson College on Sunday night attracted a great audience and fantastic feed back. Tuesday 25 June Art Group Nelson’s Winter Art Exhibition held at the Stoke Memorial Hall attracted more than 600 people over the two day exhibition. A total of 24 paintings were sold as a result including seven on an opening night which was held the Friday evening before the event officially opened. Jeff Connel won the People’s Choice Award for his panting “Through the Gorge.” Tuesday June 25 St John’s annual appeal held last week was a fantastic success with more than $9800 raised from street collection days. All money that is raised locally stays local, so money donated to St John in Nelson will be used by St John in Nelson, spent for the benefit of the community and patients in the region. Tuesday April 9 The Roman Machines exhibition at the Nelson Provincial Museum attracted 9308 people, and 2700 of those were school children. The museum had three class groups per day visit the exhibition during term time.
mission.” But Don admits there had been not a single piece of feedback from parents and was unsure whether the law change was the right move. “I do wonder where it comes from, as far as the recommendation. I can understand if it’s come from a medical background or something like that. I’d hate to say it’s the wrong thing to do because I can see the sense but then in other ways is there really evidence that this a real issue? Have there been that many accidents or are we doing this in case there is one? I’m kind of on the fence really.”

Nayland College’s top performers will take to the stage this Thursday for a night of fastpaced music, drama and performing arts. The Nayland College Performing Arts Celebration of Music, Dance and Drama will feature 150 students in a variety of acts says the head of department for dance at Nayland, Lotus Hattersley. “It’s the first year that we’ve actually been a performing arts department. The three have all been joined together so we wanted to put on a mid-year performance for the students. Normally we have a smaller show but we’re making an effort for a bigger one to show our community how good our
performing arts students are. They put so much effort in, it’s good to give them a performance opportunity.” The show will feature 150 students from year 9 to year 13 and will showcase music, dance, drama. “There’ll be everything from musical theatre to Bob Fossy Cabaret dance to Indian Bollywood. Some of our Rockquest bands are playing and we’ve got a string quartet,” says Lotus. She says the show will have a “carnival feel” with a candy bar and students dressed up around the hall. Tickets are available at the Nayland College reception for $5 per person.
Local pumped for television gig Tracey Dudley will swap her usual job of pumping petrol in central Nelson for the lights, camera and action of filming a television commercial. Tracey was nominated to star in a Z petrol station commercial by her boss Nigel Andrews and was selected to be just one of ten forecourt staff to star in it. She will fly to Auckland this week, film the advert before attending a “heroes dinner”, of which she is one, later that night. She says she was stoked to be picked. “I was very excited when I found out that I’d be selected. I’ve never been on TV before so it’s all pretty cool.”

been awarded the sole NZ Distributorship for LITHIONIC BATTERIES – USA made – these batteries are the market leaders in providing Lithium performance and safety. Lithionic Batteries are 5 times lighter than a lead acid battery providing exceptional long life (2000 – 3000 charge cycles at 80% depth of discharge compared to 600 – 800 cycles in lead acid deep cycle batteries). Lithionic Batteries have an inbuilt Bms protecting against over discharging, accidental short circuiting, cell balancing and temperature extremes. In our Slave battery range the Bms also protects against overcharging. The batteries are maintenance free – no liquids to top up, no lead terminals to oxidize! All of our products come with brass terminals in SAE or post configuration. Lithionic Batteries will double the amount of energy (minimum) compared to the equivalent size lead acid battery. Good vehicle preparation, knowledge and driving technique are critical. Here are some winter driving tips for ensuring your journey is as safe, enjoyable and hazard-free as possible.
heating and cooling systems, wiper blades, filters, battery and tyre pressures amongst other things. By doing this you’ll have peace of mind in knowing that your vehicle is ready for the conditions. Experience shows that if a car is going to fail, it’s most likely to do so when in the harshest operating conditions – and for most owners, that’s the winter months. 2. Tyres All the control you have is delivered through four palm-sized patches of rubber where the tyres meet the road. Start by making sure your tyres are in good condition; they have at least the minimum tread depth and are free from cuts and damage. Make sure your tyres are properly inflated. Over-inflation can reduce the gripping action of tyres because the tread will not meet the road surface as it was designed to do. If you’re going to be driving in the snow, make sure you have the correct chains and snow tyres (if fitted) – it’s now the law that when you use snow tyres that all four are in fact snow tyres. When you’re driving in wintry conditions it is essential to keep the tyres rolling and not allow them to spin or slide.
3. Good visibility Reduced visibility means you have to budget extra time for every drive. Before you hit the road make sure you 1. If so, don’t put it off. Book your vehicle in icer to remove ice from your vehicle. Do for a pre-winter check with your local MTA member not use warm water, as this may cause business. The experts know what to look for – oil levels, your windscreen to crack. People often only associate air-conditioning with staying cool during the summer months, but it’s equally vital for ensuring good visibility during the colder months. Get your system checked. And make sure people can see you. Ensure your lights are all working properly and are correctly adjusted. the light being reflected straight back at your eyes, making visibility even harder. 4. Know what to expect. If you’re travelling out of town make sure you know what you’re in for. Bridges and overpasses ice over faster than normal roads. Why? The earth is warm and normal roads have the warmth of the earth underneath. Shady areas cool more quickly than areas in full sun. The shadows from large trees, buildings and mountains can cause isolated icy spots. 5. Know when to accelerate and when to brake When accelerating, push the accelerator pedal gently. If you do sense wheel-spin, ease back on the pedal immediately until you feel the tyres grip again. Apply the same principle when braking. Brake gently at first then increase the pedal pressure progressively. You can brake quite hard as long as the application is smooth. Remember, don’t steer if you are braking or accelerating and vice versa. If your vehicle is fitted with ABS and/or a Stability Control system, make sure you know what this can do for you. Get experience of your vehicle’s capabilities and how it reacts, before you get stuck. Things you might have with you While having things like a first aid kit and fire extinguisher make good sense at any time of the year, there are things that you should consider especially important for the colder months. A torch, perhaps a mat or cover to protect you from the ground should you need to change a tyre. Protective gloves and some form of reflective warning device are always a good idea too. Driving at Night - It’s anything but a dark art. Driving safely at night means that you need to be prepared, stay alert and use plenty of common sense. Here are a few tips to ensure your night time journey is as safe as it can be. • Start with the basics. The law requires that you drive with your headlights on, 30 minutes after sunset, until 30 minutes before sunrise, and at any other time when you can’t clearly see a person or vehicle 100 metres away. Instead concentrate on the edges of oncoming traffic and any bright objects. • Keep your eyes moving and look around. Move your eyes from side to side, rather than just concentrating on the centreline and the road ahead. This helps to keep your eyes adjusted to the dark and avoid falling victim to what’s sometimes called ‘highway hypnosis,’ a state in which reaction time is significantly slower.

Grant to help ‘promising’ boy The parents of Victory’s Kelly-Bo PeeniTiananga spoke proudly about their son being acknowledged for his potential after he was awarded with the first ever Victory Boxing educational grant of $1000. The grant is the brainchild of Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, who is personally donating $1000 to one member of the boxing club each year. Kelly-Bo, 9, was identified as a talented boy who shines on stage, in the classroom and the boxing gym. Victory Boxing’s Paul Hampton says Kelly-Bo was the right choice for the award. “We want to help develop well rounded kids, and education is fundamental to their success, so Aldo’s grant will help to provide support and educational opportunities for those children who meet the criteria.” Kelly-Bo’s mother and father both spoke of their pride in their son at a special ceremony last Thursday. Aldo says the grant was started to help with
educational opportunities for promising children at Victory Boxing, following his own time in the gym and boxing ring. “I trained for thirteen weeks at Victory Boxing in the lead up to the Fight for Victory event, and I saw first-hand the positive impact the club provides for young kids in the community, in teaching them vital life skills not only in the area of fitness and health, but also fundamental topics such as discipline, goal setting, self-respect, and the importance of having a good education,” says Aldo. “The annual grant is a practical way of expressing my personal gratitude to the club for the wonderful work they are doing in our community, and it will provide some financial support for the recipient in helping to further their educational future.” Kelly-Bo had the final word at the ceremony, where he beamed from ear to ear. “Thank you, I’m so happy.”

Frustration for pig hunters
Thousands of locals are knowingly breaking the law, but they aren’t alone and they aren’t going to stop says Conrad Adams who says he is standing up for his fellow pig hunters. It’s been a year since legislation was introduced banning the importing of illegal dog tracking devices and while more than 70 have been seized at customs since, Conrad says that number is nothing on the “tens of thousands” of illegal devices already being used throughout the country. Some tracking devices are illegal because they operate on the same radio frequencies as people travelling and working in rural areas, such as forestry workers, Department of Conservation rangers, and search and rescue crews. It is illegal for anyone else, including pig hunters, to use the frequencies due to the possibility of interference and the fact that other people are paying to use them. Conrad says the Radio Spectrum, who control the licensing of radio frequencies, need to change their attitude towards pig hunters and come up with a positive solution instead of criminalizing “good guys" who simply want to hunt. Because the devices offer hunters unrivalled safety they are not willing to give them up and Conrad wants to set the record straight on why they use them.

• Mother Nature is extremely confused. The poor Mother seems to be of the opinion that if she plonks a large dollop of long dry spells in the summer, then she can do the same with copious supplies of rain in the winter, topped off with lashings of snow for good measure. Then, she reasons, we can work out a yearly average of all that. This of course confuses us, for how are we to garden when it is too dry in summer, and too wet in winter? But we can. We make use of the rains now with this cunning plan. • First, we gather up every scrap of paper and cardboard that we can find, and leave it outside where it will get thoroughly wet. That’s easy at present! During a pause in the wet weather, we layer the paper and cardboard on the wet soil around the plants in the garden. But leave a space around the base of the plants. Explanations later. • Top with a generous helping of fallen leaves or compost. Cover this with pea straw or something similar, and finally cover the lot with lawn clippings. The lawn clippings will help to keep everything

• Four container vessels and one general cargo vessel, a log ship, a brief visit from the car carrier, two visits from the Anatoki, a tanker, seventeen movements of large fishing vessels and the Cook Strait Sea Watch moving around the port kept the Marine and Stevedoring departments of Port Nelson busy this week. • What possessed him to go? An experienced kayaker called me over the weekend to advise he had upturned from his racing kayak and had swum ashore. in place, and keep the birds at bay. • It is now self-explanatory about the gap around the base of the plants. Space is required for the plants to expand and grow, and it leaves space for the plants to “breathe” as well. It is best to do one area at a time. “Do it once, do it right” • When the soil begins to warm up there will be heaps of activity underground, with worms pulling all that lovely food into the soil. in the summer, the plants will love you for your kindness and the worms will too. And best of all, we won’t need to water near as much. I started my preparations last week, with the help of grandson Jordan. OH lucky me! • Are you getting your strawberry plants in now? While you are doing that, think to the future when you have luscious fruit, but they are getting dirty. Grab yourself some straw now while it is still available. Store it in a dry place or cover it to keep out the weather. For sure as eggs, finding straw at fruit harvest time will be as easy as finding a hen with teeth!
urday was for strong winds and rough seas. • Well in this case it may have cost a person a $3000 surf ski and could have cost him his life. I was notified of this instance by the individual and I appreciate his candid truth in describing what could have been a very different result. He admits that without his lifejacket he could have drowned or suffered severe hypothermia and passed out. His lifejacket kept him alive. As it was he admits that hypothermia was setting in by the time he reached shore • Life jackets save lives… if they are being worn.

A local man is urging people to think of those living with Alzheimers when they create their wills, saying that it is “right to remember” those living with dementia. George Truman, of Stoke, is speaking out on behalf of the Nelson Alzheimers Society and is appealing to the public to follow his lead and plan to make a bequest to the group, who currently help more than 450 local sufferers in the Nelson region. In the last 12 months the society has seen 111 new referrals to their services, which includes ongoing support to those going through the different stages of dementia and their caregivers, who are mostly family members. The society is run entirely by volunteers, who employ three field workers to cover Nelson, Tasman and Golden Bay and provide services such as home visits, day activities, transport, education and information. George says while the day activities and home visits are extremely beneficial to those with Alzheimers, weekly events such as a caregivers' coffee group, or day care facilities make the lives of those people who are helping a loved one with dementia that much easier. “Most caregivers are family members, and for them it is a full time job. It’s important that they too get the support they need and it’s im-

portant that they get a break.” The society currently receives $50,000 from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and relies on grants and other donations for survival. George says that while donations from raffles and other efforts are a huge help, the society needs the bigger bequest donations to be able to survive. “There is a huge demand here locally. And while the society is achieving tremendous things, it is struggling to cope.” George is a long time supporter of the Alzheimers Society and has been prompted to ask his fellow Ernest Rutherford Village residents for help already, saying the nature of the group's work is vital. “I have spoken to fellow residents of and implored them to change their wills to make a bequest to the Alzheimers Society. It is vital that the society has these funds so they have the money they need to do the work they do so well. "What is needed now is for the community that has benefitted from their work, to make a bequest in their will so they can meet the growing demands of their services.” All money raised by the Nelson Alzheimers Society is spent locally, and bequests can be made to suit. You can nominate what you want to leave the society from part or all of your estate, or you can make a specified gift.

Cobras and Rabbits reach grand final Stables Richmond Rabbits survived a semi-final scare to book themselves a place in the TRL grand final for the second year in a row. The defending champions, who only entered the competition in 2012, edged Blenheim team the Wairau Taniwha 22-20 at Ngawhatu to book a date with the Super Cheap Auto Stoke Cobras, who beat the Collision Centre Tahunanui Tigers 26-12 in the earlier match. Rabbits assistant coach Deon Charles says the result was too close for his liking, having watched his side beat the Taniwha with more ease just a week earlier. “We consider the Taniwha as a real threat with plenty of potential so we knew they’d come over here and bring it to us. They played really well,” he says. “I think I’d be lying if I told you we were 100 per cent confident, 100 per cent of the time, but as always I knew if we stuck to our structures we’d get there eventually.” And Deon is expecting another brutal battle this weekend, ac-

Florida where they will compete against US state and international sides. Ellie, who captained the New Zealand under-17 women's side last year, says it was good for Nelson volleyball having so many players selected in 2013. She says the US tournament will be great for the players' development and could open the door for future opportunities. "It's a good opportunity [for us] because there will be scouts there for scholarships but we don't have too many expectations. We're not going there to win, it's just for the development and the experience." Debutante, Georgia, was hoping to use the international tournament as an opportunity to push for further New Zealand selection. "This will be our last year playing in this team so we're trying to prove ourselves and impress the other coaches while we're there." Nelson's Helen Bywater and Rebecca Malthus will manage two of the travelling teams, adding to the familiar faces on tour. The players leave New Zealand on July 19.
A total of nine Nelson volleyball players will jet off to the United States this month, having been selected in various New Zealand high performance age group teams. The New Zealand women's youth side has the strongest Nelson contingent with Nelson College for Girls student Ellie Bell joining Waimea College trio Brittani Harrington, Georgia Davies and Katie Ditzel. Waimea College's Hannah Davenhill represented New Zealand alongside Ellie and Brittani last year but has been selected in the higher age group for 2013, making the women's junior side, which is the equivalent to an under-19 team. Nelson College duo Harry Fergusson and Liam Whareaitu have made the Josh Ovsenekcoached New Zealand men's youth team while Giles Black, James Anderson and Monty Brosnahan are in the Neil Anderson-coached junior men's team. The four teams will contest the USA High Performance Championships in Fort Lauderdale,

editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz Nelson Netball hosted the annual Nelson Age Group Tournament at Saxton Courts on Sunday in very trying weather conditions. Teams from Nelson, Marlborough, Motueka, Golden Bay, Buller and Tapawera played three games each, and it was literally the the luck of the draw if you got wet as the weather changed constantly throughout the course of the day. It was also a challenge for the umpires as many also had three games or more. Nelson had six teams competing – Under 17, Under 15 and Under 13 as well as the respective age group development teams. The Under 17 Development is coached by successful Waimea College coach, Faye Eden and she managed to record a very successful day at the courts defeating Marlborough Under 15 B 25-18, Motueka Under 17 34-13 and Marlborough B 24-16. Last week at the Top of the South Tournament in Blenheim Nelson were beaten by Marlborough B, however after a few games under their belt, with combinations beginning to gel they were able to
