Concern road changes could become permanent Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Residents say temporary changes to roads in the Elizabeth, Talbot and Florence Street area may

soon become permanent, and their opinions may not be heard. Of particular concern is the closing of the corner of Elizabeth and Talbot Streets. “Driving from Elizabeth to Talbot Street to use the lights to turn right, worked.

Trying to turn out of Florence Street on to Salisbury Road is impossible at busy times,” says local Christine Stanton. While the TDC sent residents a survey outlining the trialled changes, Christine says the follow-up feedback

survey was only available online, meaning those without internet access were unable to have their say. Ann Green is also concerned as the cost of a taxi to take her from Pak’n’Save home has doubled because the taxi must now

Is there anything good about winter? I guess getting into a nice warm bed. But I’m a summer person.

I love winter because my son was a winter baby born in July. That was 10 years ago now. Time flies.

It’s too cold. I’m just over from Australia after living there for 10 years.

I love the beautiful, blue-sky days. Just great for building.

Region getting drier over last 25 years Jenny Nicholson Despite the rain recently, the overall trend over the past 25 years has been that Tasman is getting less rainfall, according to Stats New Zealand. In 1995 there were 26,945 million cubic metres and although there has been some fluctuation since, it has dropped to 20,178 in 2020. The driest year from those years was 2019 with just 15,011 million cubic metres. While there is natural variation in precipitation, New Zealand appears to be getting drier, says Stats New Zealand. The countries annual rainfall for the five years from 2016 was 3.1 per cent less than the average of the previous five years and 10.7 percent less than the five-year average for 1996 to 2000.

Work on Meadows development has hit another milestone this week with Thelin Construction installing beams on the bridge across Borck Creek that will connect up Berryfield Drive. They have now placed beams on the first three bridge spans from The Meadows side. There are 11 beams which make up each span, with 55 beams in total forming the bridge deck. Even though this is a huge step in the project, but there are months of construction work ahead before the bridge will be completed. There is a lot of intricate work once the beams are placed, such as transverse stressing, concreting linkage and diaphragm joints, concrete in-filling between all the beams and building the shared path on the upstream side, part of which is cantilevered. Once Thelin have finished, Ching Contracting then take over to asphalt the bridge and construct the approaches. The bridge is scheduled to be open late this year and is a cost share project of $1.9 million between Tasman District Council and Richmond West Development Company Limited. Photo: Supplied.

Lights, camera… car jack! Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

TVNZ Breakfast made a surprise visit to Brightwater Motors last week ahead of the monthly Chicks That Fix workshop they offer. Presenter Abbey Wakefield

flew down from Wellington to meet the couple who run the course and have a go at changing a wheel live on television. “I had less than five minutes to get the wheel off and replace it with a new one,” says Abbey. “It was being screened live across the country, so I

certainly felt the pressure!” Owner Dave Gilberd says, “We were thrilled to have TVNZ in the workshop. We were happy to teach Abbey some new skills and maybe being on TV will get even more women coming along to our classes. It’s really fun and informal and

we have a few ladies come back each month.” Attendees can learn everything from doing a wheel change to finding out how the engine works. The free, women-only classes are held on the first Thursday of every month until the end of the year at Brightwater Motors.

Arjun Kamath, Joshua McKay and Andrien Pavier dressded up for Kiwiana day. Each term, Richmond Primary School has a rich theme and currently it is Aoteroa. The school joined together in the hall for a parade where each class did a circuit for students and parents to view their costumes. Along with many kiwis and pukekos, there were silver ferns, kiwi fruit, Edmonds cookery aprons and the wonderful costume of a Marmite jar where the lid was worn as a hat. Arjun Kamath’s costume portraying Edmond Hilary was complete with an oxygen mask. Grandmother Lorraine Arnold says, to her, Kiwiana means All Blacks, kiwifruit and buzzy bees. Local collaboration wins national award

The Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA) last week won the Best Practice Award at the National Economic Development New Zealand Awards for its’ collaboration with agencies in the Nelson Tasman region to form Project Kōkiri. The award recognised NRDA for the development of Project Kōkiri, a collaborative response set up to navigate the economic impacts of Covid-19. NDRA partnered with Tasman District Council, Mana Whenua, Nelson District Council, Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce and regionally-based government agencies. Project Kōkiri, formed during

lockdown in 2020, has delivered a 12-month recovery programme across the region including initiatives such as the ‘We’ve Got This’ campaign which reached over one million people. “Kōkiri means to move forward together. The whole recovery has been driven by a focus on collaboration, and despite the noise, uncertainty and challenges that 2020 delivered, this focus was unwavering,” says NRDA chairperson Meg Matthews. “The success of the collaboration is evident as NRDA shifts its focus from the immediate recovery to regeneration over the next five years,” says new Chief Executive of the NRDA, Fiona Wilson.

A new way of life for those with dementia Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A state-of-the-art Memory Care Centre (MCC) opened in Richmond this month will allow residents living with dementia to live in a homely, safe environment with individualized care. “In the past, dementia units could be places to lock people in and keep them as happy as possible,” says Dementia New Zealand Chief Executive Scott Arrol. the circular layout to The interactive table, individualised boards and doors, and coloured toilet seats, all features of the MMC at

Summerset Richmond Ranges, are designed for safety, dignity and cognitive stimulation needed by each individual. “Nowhere else could someone with dementia go into a serviced apartment like this. The only difference is that the doors are locked,” says Scott. Although the door to the centre will be locked, there will be a wide area for residents to enjoy with both inside and outside communal areas. “We want to give more purpose to the day-to-day life. We will offer baking and gardening, make it more like home and keep it patient-centred,” says Memory Centre lead Betty George.

With a higher proportion of over 65’s in Tasman and an increase in aging population, there is also an increase of people living with dementia. “Currently we are an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. By the time people come into care it is often a tougher period and they need intensive support,” says Scott. He says that early diagnosis and wrap- around care can stretch out the period of decline up to 15 years. “Sadly, there is no cure at this point, but our memory care centre allows dignity and gives families reassurance loved ones are being cared for well,” says Summerset senior communications advisor, Sharon Lundy.

Pet shootings in Wakefield Jo Kent Pet and livestock owners are being urged by police to remain vigilant by after a cat was shot in the neck with a BB gun in Arrow Street, Wakefield, recently. Owner Kylee Stringer took to a community page on Facebook to reveal that her beloved cat, Ned, had returned home after having “gone to ground” with a bullet wound in his neck. Horrified, she was given the news by the vet that her cat was beyond help and would need to be put down. And it’s not just cats who are being targeted. Horse owner Alicia Sixtus noticed some small, round puncture marks on her horse’s hip, belly and on his rear, a few weeks ago. “We also found one on his neck recently and there have been at least four other times we have discovered bullet wounds,” she says. “I’m so worried it may happen again that I’m keeping him rugged in a light cover in the day.” Visible scarring on Basil is still evident, but “luckily, his wounds have now healed,” says Alicia. A goat owner in the area, who wishes to remain anonymous, says, “I found a BB gun in my goat paddock about three months ago. They had shot at our goats causing them to jump our fence into the neighbours’ place. The goats were so scared. The offenders dropped the gun as they climbed over the fence.” Constable Jamie White says, “This sort of thing crops up from time to time, so it could be the same person doing it or someone totally different. The main thing is, people need to report it to us because if it happens multiple times then we have a record of it. Just pop in and flag it to us at the station so we are aware of what is hap- Alicia with her horse Basil before he was shot pening in the community.” several times. Photo: Supplied.

Local plumbers compete for spot at regional finals Jo Kent Plumbers from Richmond are gearing up to qualify for the regional finals of the Plumbing World Young Plumber of the Year competition. On 29 June, 13 plumbers from Nelson Tasman will put their skills to the test for the chance to secure the branch winner spot at the competition’s regional finals later this year. The Wellington/Marlborough regional finals will take place on 25 August and will see 10 plumbers battle it out for a chance to make it to the national final to try and take home the title. In this qualifying round ahead of the regionals, entrants must be aged 31 and under, and working or training as a plumber. -The competition will see the plumbers attempt a series of plumbing disciplines, which are assessed by a judge, and complete a written test. Nelson Plumbing World branch manager, Brent Rust, is hosting the competition. “It’s exciting to see the new talent coming into the industry. There’re so many opportunities out there for them at the moment. “This year I hope to see competi-

tive, challenging and fun competition, giving all our young plumbers an opportunity to put their skills on display. Good luck to everyone!” The competition highlights the industry’s urgent need for more qualified plumbers, currently the skills shortage means New Zealand needs 30 per cent more plumbers. The Young Plumber of the Year competition is one of Plumbing World’s initiatives aimed at resolving this shortage. With many Kiwi’s diverting their travel funds into home renovations over the past year, the demand for plumbers is looking to reach new heights. Recent research reveals that approximately 2900 more qualified plumbers are required to meet current demands. The winner of the national finals stands to receive a share of $55,000 worth of prizes, including $5,000 in cash, a $8,600 toolware prize pack, a $5,000 Milwaukee prize pack, $1,500 in NZPM RPS shares, tools, gift vouchers, and a one-year subscription to NZ Plumber Magazine. To apply, go to youngplumbersclub.co.nz before 29 June.

Free senior cookery classes Jo Kent

Graham Bishop and Bodil Shand learnt new skills on a previous course. Photo: Supplied.

Free cookery classes for seniors are being held in Richmond starting on 14 June. The NZ Nutrition Foundation has designed the course for people who have lost the motivation to cook better meals for themselves or because they lack the skills or confidence in the kitchen. “A few people have come from retirement villages where they are living independently,” says Sally Rees, the course tutor. “I teach meal planning, budgeting and portion sizes, and then do a demo of a recipe from the 50-page booklet they get to take home. I promote a plantbased diet due to the health benefits for all concerned.”

The students cook a couple of dishes from the book and, when it’s ready, they all sit down and eat lunch together. “The socialisation aspect is something the attendees love, new connections are made and old ones are rekindled,” says Sally. “On the last day of the course, they make a dish at home from the recipe booklet and bring it along for a potluck lunch together.” The 3-hour lessons run Mondays, 10am-1pm, over four weeks at Holy Trinity Church, Richmond. Attendance at all sessions is required once enrolled. Medical appointments can be worked around. To book your place, email sallyrees02@gmail.com or call 021 1709 443.

The Rotary Club’s Roger Minchin (centre) joined Menzshed’s Alan Kissell and George Inglis, and St Paul’s and Salisbury Schools to collect books and tools to ship to Samoa. Their contributions will be added to a container going from Cashmere Rotary Club, who have sent 26 containers to date. Local Rotary Club member Debra Gibbs lived in Samoa for four years and helped distribute the items to the 152 schools in Samoa. “We sent 16 boxes down this year. St Paul’s gave a lot of stationery and books, and Salisbury school sent books including dictionaries that I know are used a lot in Samoa,” says Debra. Happy 100th Birthday, Johnny! Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Alec Fraser Johnston, known to all as Johnny, turns 100 today. The centenarian has lived in Richmond 35 years, choosing to shift here for retirement. He is one of the few people who served in World War 2 still living in the area. Born on 9 June 1921, he grew up in the depression and left school at 13 to help support his family. A life-defining moment was when his mother found him a job as a telegraph boy. Finding it interesting, he went back to work in the evening to learn morse code. When war broke out, this enabled him to train as a wireless operator in the airforce. In May 1941 he boarded the RMS Aorangi for Canada and then a troopship bound for England, travelling six days in convoy escorted by warships and aircraft from the United Kingdom, before being posted to Ireland followed by Ghana and Nigeria. “Flying boats were based in Ireland and carried out anti-submarine patrols and convoy escort duties. Our duties involved maintaining radio watches, listening

He says, for security reasons, aircraft maintained radio silence so as not to disclose their position, but when they went into action on sighting and attacking submarine, they would send coded

signals with detailed specifics of the action. At that point, after long periods of silence, the wireless operators were suddenly very busy. He returned home to marry Isabel in 1945 and was honeymooning on Stewart Island on VJ Day. They had two sons, Doug and

Ross. “After the war I tried civilian life but didn’t settle into my new life well, so rejoined the airforce,” says Johnny. “I was in Fiji for a hurricane and later posted to the RAF for an exchange and worked on Tempest. At the time the security was very

high, but that was 50 years ago and now you can google Tempest,” he says. “I travelled to Berlin in cold war days, through East Germany. A troop of armed soldiers were responsible for guarding the train while in transit to defend in the event of an attack. The doors were locked and chained and there were all sorts of rules to ensure there was no opportunity for the Russians to cause stoppages or delays,” says Johnny. In 1971 he was posted to San Francisco as Vice Consul where he enjoyed a busy social life. and later spent two years at the New Zealand Embassy in Moscow. His love of learning has continued all his life, having learned to speak and write Russian, spending time silversmithing as well as bone and greenstone carving, and always enjoying research. He still has a room dedicated to art and particularly enjoys painting. “When I showed him how a computer worked he said he was past all that, but a week later he rang and said, “I better give you my email address,”” says son Doug. Doug says his dad has always approached things with gusto, has fantastic ideas, is very supportive and loves a joke and playing tricks on people.

Waimea Old Boys is celebrating the 125th year of their successful existence as a rugby club and acknowledging the introduction of that game to New Zealand by a Waimea lad, Charles Munro, in 1870. There were two other Waimea-born boys who also played a part in that football revolution. They were Henry and Alfred, sons of Francis and Jane Otterson, born in 1846 and 1849 respectively at Rostrevor, the homestead of their 200 acre farm which encompassed the A&P Racecourse and Oakwood properties of today. The Munro and Otterson families had close connections socially and in local affairs, with Dr David Monro and Francis Otterson each being elected to the original Nelson Provincial Council in September 1853. Henry and Alfred were foundation pupils at Nelson College in 1856, Charles Munro had gone

Alfred Otterson to England, returning to Nelson in 1870 imbued from his schooling there with the new game of rugby. The population in Waimea/Richmond was not sufficient yet to support all school and sporting activities, even this new game. Alfred Otterson did assist R C Tennant in forming the Nelson Football Club in 1868 and was still a player and member of the management committee of that club in 1870 when they made the decision to adopt

rugby rules as their game. Alfred played in the initial game against Collegians and the Wellington Provincial team at Petone that year, and up until he transferred to Oamaru in 1876 remained a player and committee member. Meantime, brother Henry was in Wellington employed as a Committee Clerk in the House of Representatives and had joined the club of that name in 1870 and was a member of their local and provincial teams. Both brothers played in the return provincial game at Nelson in 1872. Alfred moved to Oamaru in 1876, setting up in business and joining the local football club which he helped in adapting to rugby and serving as player, referee and club president. Henry’s son Arthur was a useful halfback, captaining the First XV at Wellington College in 1905 then playing for Auckland Universities and Auckland prior to WW1.

Mags is painting for neurological awareness Kate Russell Mags Meechang is using the power of her paintbrush to help raise awareness of neurological conditions. The artist is taking part in the Fifty for 50 challenge for the Neurological Foundation’s 50th anniversary - in which people complete a challenge of their choice involving 50 things. This could be reading 50 books, running

50km, or cooking 50 new food dishes. Mags decided that creating 50 paintings was more up her alley. “I didn’t really want to do 50 sit-ups every day or run 50km, so I thought I’d do my arty thing.” In fact, she’s enjoyed it so much that she has ended up doing 62 paintings. “I’m amazed I’ve done it so quickly.” Mags has been part of the New Zealand art scene since 1990 with involvement

as an artist, facilitator, and tutor. Now retired, she says she took on the challenge not only to support the Neurological Foundation but also to inspire herself to discover new avenues in her work. “I’m hoping it will rasise awareness of the foundation,” says Mags. Her paintings will be exhibited at the Nelson Golf Club for viewing and purchase at $20 each, with proceeds going to the charity.

Mens Health, let’s talk Men’s Health Month is aimed at raising awareness of preventable health problems and encouraging the early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. NZ’s Men’s Health Month is about getting men and boys talking about their health concerns, and asking their mates how they are doing. This week we’re focusing on Men’s Health, so we’d like to introduce Dr Dave Baldwin to you all, the self-proclaimed “First World President of the International Healthy Bastards Club”. This club is all about communication and trying to get good health messages across to “them’s that haven’t been listening”! It has now become Dr Dave’s real passion because of its huge potential to “make a difference” in improving health in this country. Just so you know he’s a real doctor, here’s some background on the man: Dr Dave completed a college education at both Marlborough Boys’ and Tawa Colleges before going on to get his Bachelor of Science degree at his much-loved Massey University. Having then established a foothold in the world of “brainy bastards”, he gained a medical degree at Otago University and completed his vocational training in General Practice to become a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. He likes to describe this whole process of becoming a doctor in “Country Bumpkin Language” made so famous by the Massey University Diploma of Agriculture students: “Six munths ago, I could nut spell Dokta and now I are one!”

Dr Dave Baldwin at one of his favourite places, writing his books. Dr Dave’s subspecialty is aviation medicine which involves dealing with the medical issues associated with personnel working in the aviation environment. He gained the appropriate experience through a posting to RNZAF Base Ohakea in 1989 as the Base Medical Officer to the RNZAF Air Combat Force. Three years later, he left the RNZAF and began developing the Bulls Medical Centre located in Bulls – a thriving rural town located next door to RNZAF Base Ohakea. He has been a GP working at his Bulls Medical Centre since, however, he has developed two truly unique “other” jobs

that has turned his life into just one big adventure. The first of the “other” jobs was his “Bulls Flying Doctor Service” (www.flyingdoctor.co.nz) which provides a mobile aviation medical service to pilots throughout the rural South Island. This work involves doing a regular “aeroward round” in his Cessna Bush Plane, doing aviation medicals on pilots at the following airports: Nelson, Motueka, Omaka, Karamea, Hokitika, Fox and Franz Glacier, Haast, Neil’s Beach, Milford Sound, Te Anau, Wanaka, Queenstown, Pukaki and Rangiora. The second “other” job is developing his

FOUR GENERATIONS OF WATSON’S For over 60 years the Watson’s family have been providing the Richmond community with fresh food, a great range and exceptional service. As you can well imagine, grocery shopping in the 1950s would have looked very different to the pre-packaged products and electronic ticketing that we enjoy today. However, one thing remains the same and that’s FreshChoice Richmond’s commitment to providing their customers with the best in fresh, local produce and quality grocery items at great prices. “Back in Grandad’s day, over 60 years ago, everything used to be bought in bulk and they’d have to weigh it all out and bag it up for customers. Deliveries were also done by bike, in fact, we’ve still got Grandad’s delivery bike on display in the store,” says Gary. “I think he would be quite amazed at where the world of food has gone since his day, it’s been a very quick change and New Zealanders needs are certainly continuing to evolve.” Most of Richmond grew up with the Watson family and everyone who knows them knows how much the Richmond community

and supporting local means to them. From Richmond Super Discount (then the store out at Wakefield), and now FreshChoice Richmond, a lot has changed but never the principles, or the family name. non-PC form of health communication called the “Healthy Bastards Campaign”. It began because he just got sick of going to the morgue to sign off young people he’d known as a GP who’d died early from preventable diseases like premature heart attacks and diabetes mellitus. It became clear to him that the traditional health promotional strategies weren’t being taken notice of by many of these people. Dr Dave then decided to give it a go at promoting good health to what he calls “the

Anyway, all of his material is online www.flyingdoctor.co.nz What is really interesting about this bloke is that he reckons that his life has turned into one big adventure working on his three “jobs” and retirement is not an option.

I had an opportunity to visit the Arrowtown Jazz Festival when I lived in Central Otago. It was a small concert held in a local park area. I remember how I noticed the audience - they were of various ages. The older adults would enjoy it in peace and mindfully listening to the music, whereas the children were incredibly joyful and dancing away, even though they were too young to even understand the music genre or little did they know the words to some of the songs. Music is part of our everyday life. Some of you may listen to music daily whether it’s through your favourite radio station or internet. Some may stick to specific genres and it will differ depending on what you are going through in your life. Just to name a few, some of us like to listen to sad music during our low moods or some of us like to enjoy doing our simple house chores listening to upbeat music. Back in Korea, when I was a teenager, I went through a phase of listening to hard rock music such as Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, even though I did not know the lyrics. But as I became older, my music genre of choice changed. Especially when I started attending the Theological University to become a minister. The church I was attending at that time did not approve of the congregation members listen-

ing to rock music. Furthermore, at that time, the use of electric guitars or electric keyboards were banned at church. Sadly, many young people left the church because of this culture. To my amusement, my son started listening to Deep Purple during his high school years. He even learnt how to play the electric guitar and performed with a band at school with his friends. This was all in addition to his classical music genre, in which he was playing the clarinet. Despite my upbringing in Korea, I did not force my son to stop listening to rock music as I wanted to encourage him to listen to different genres. However, I definitely would not be favouring certain music as many of us know, some of us find the lyrics to certain songs inappropriate. I am not a musician as a profession, but as a minister I cannot separate my ministry from music. Music is a core part of the church and our faith. The words and messages in some songs give us comfort, empower us and give us courage. In the scriptures, one of my favourite passages can be found in Psalm 121: I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from GOD, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains. If you find a chance to look at the Bible, flick to the book of Psalms and have a read through all the different songs yourself. ning the intermediate section of the MLT NZ Gold Guitar Award in Gore over the weekend. Local Catholic schools giving to others Jenny Nicholson Earlier this month, both Garin College and St Paul’s School students raised money for charity. Garin student’s ran a mufti day, dressing as movie or book characters, and students each donated $2 to a school in the outer Cook Islands to allow them to buy new books for their small library. At Saint Paul’s Catholic School, 80 year-7 and 8 students took part in the ‘Caratis Challenge’ which involved each of the students running, walking or biking for part of the day. They ended the activity with a plain rice meal for lunch. Every dollar Saint Paul’s raised is increaseded by the New Zea-

land Aid Programme to become $4, with the money used largely in Pacific Islands. Donations are to help with training youth to become self sufficient and ready for employment, nutrition training and the provision of new water systems to give access to clean water. “We raise money so other kids in other places can eat better food,” says year-7 student Chayne Bradley. “The rice was yum but most of us got sick of it after a while.” Finn McTague commented it wouldn’t be as good if they had to eat just rice every day. Harrison Chapman says it was the first year they had done the Caritas Challenge but that they plan to participate each year.

Gentle but messy church Jenny Nicholson Two local churches are running alternative church services based around family, food, and fun. “The Gathering at Whakatu Presbyterian is for people who don’t feel comfortable in church,” says Minister Sage Harris. There are no songs, they do play games and share food and there is a short thought shared, which is kept to around 7 minutes. It is run from 4 pm to 6 pm on the second Sunday of the month. ‘Messy Church’ is run from Richmond Baptist Church and sees about 70 attending. Again, a meal is shared, and there is a message following games and craft time. Coordinator Lorna Gower says it’s mostly fam-

ilies who attend because it is messy and loud. “It’s a gentle approach to church. A lot of people may be scared of coming into a church building or have preconceived thoughts on Christianity. Messy Church is about showing God’s love,” she says. Recently, Finding Nemo was their theme, looking at Nemo’s dad searching everywhere for him and how God also searches for us and wants a relationship with us. Another time they looked at Despicable Me with games themed around the film and the message that Gru had all his goals and schemes in mind but on encountering love softened and his plans changed. They talked about how an encounter with God can soften hearts and change plans, too. There is no cost to those who attend, with food and craft supplied. The next Messy Church will be at Richmond Baptist Church on Salisbury Road from 4 pm to 6 pm on 3rd July. For more information go to their Facebook site Messy Church Richmond. Giants stand tall with bounce back win over Airs The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have responded from last Thursday night’s dramatic one-point loss to the Manawatu Jets by disposing of the Taranaki Airs 10086 in a quality Queen’s Birthday clash. Played in front of another big crowd at the Trafalgar Centre, the home team didn’t disappoint. The Airs hit the court full of running and set the early pace, but once the Giants settled it was one-way traffic through the opening quarter as Hunter Hale and Donte Ingram found their stroke, pushing the home team to a 29-16 lead. By the end of the half the Giants were out to a 57-35 lead and were as equally dominant on the boards. Tai Wynyard was doing all he could to help the Airs keep in touch, while Marcel Jones was

ever present and shooting at a good clip. As the third period unfolded, both Hale and Ingram went to another level to ensure the result was safe, which sparked a flurry of subs and gave the Giants’ second unit some heavy minutes. Nic Trathen, Tysxun Aiolupotea, Josh Leger, Tyler Marsh and Riley Bensemann all got amongst the action, bringing plenty of cheers from the crowd and the likes of Hale, Ingram and Sam Dempster watching on. Though down by as much as 34 points at one stage, the Airs battled back late with a 27-14 last quarter, but it all came too late. The win pushes the Giants up to equal-fourth on the Sal’s NBL ladder. For the Airs, a string of losses is something they will want to turn around quickly.

Nelson is set to host Super Rugby side the Western Force this week as the side prepares for its clash with the Blues at Eden Park on Saturday night. The Force is set to visit a number of schools during its rest day today. These include Nayland, Waimea and Nelson Colleges. The Force boasts some familiar names for Kiwi fans, including former All Blacks Jeremy Thrush.

After a cancelled follow-up last year, the Nelson Airport K2M adventure trail run returned to the region on Sunday. Included this year was a multi-sport event that involved a kayak, 30km cycle and 10km run. 2019 champion Clinton Manderson defended his title in the trail marathon with a winning time of 03hrs2min28sec. Shaanti Robinson was the first female home in 03hrs56min1sec. The Rabid Stags took out the multisport team challenge while Chasing Awesome took out the 42km team marathon.

Community

An initiative from Sport Tasman has been announced as a finalist for the annual New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards. The Active Recreation for Refugees programme has been providing recreational opportunities for Nelson’s refugee population, working with organisations such as Nelson Red Cross and Nelson Multicultural Centre to support refugees from Colombia, Myanmar, and Nepal. Sport Tasman says the programme has increased refugees’ connection in local schools and boosted confidence.

day in winter conditions was challenging, especially as both teams required maximum points to keep their playoff chances alive with only three games remaining in the round. Wanderers were without both Vaka brothers unfortunately, due to injury, but still fielded a formidable team, with Seth Brown getting his first start in the front row, and Atu Moli and Mahonri

Ngakuru as impact players on debut for the club. The game itself was a torrid affair between two determined teams, with Renwick showing real grit in the early exchanges and Wanderers striving to win the game and score 4 tries in the process. At halftime, with the score at 14-10 to Wanderers with two converted tries to one converted try and a penalty, it was clear that patience

until We Meet again Those special memories of you will always bring a smile if only I could have you back for just a little while Then we could sit and talk again just like we used to do You always meant so very much and always will do too The fact that you are no longer here will always cause me pain But you’re forever in my heart until we meet again I love you bigger than space then, I love you bigger than space now, And will forevermore...

would be the key if Wanderers were to get home. And so it proved, with a forward pack that was dominant at scrum time. The impact from the bench in the second spell was decisive in the final outcome, with a dominant period that carried the day with two further tries while keeping Renwick scoreless, for a final result of 26-10. The Player of the Day award went to Monu Moli.

With only Div 1 rugby being played on Queen’s Birthday weekend, Wanderers took the opportunity to acknowledge the many brothers playing in the club this season. Sam and Monu Moli have joined Wanderers this year and on Saturday they had the opportunity to play alongside their elder brother, All Black Atu, who was returning from injury and released by the Chiefs to play club rugby. Three brothers playing together is not uncommon at Wanderers as the King brothers, Liam, Sean and Cameron have also run out, and in Div 2 the Morrell-Hopa brothers, Ducati, Bronson and Lee have enjoyed 3 or 4 games together in the club colours this season. Added to that are the Vaka brothers, Tone and Sosefo (Div 1), Roeskes (Clayton and Jaden, Div 2) and the Donaldson twins. Bailey and Mitchell, emphasising the unique strong family-based values of the Wanderers Sports Club. Hosting Renwick on Satur-
