Nelson’s $400M injection Andrew Board Nelson is poised for an investment injection unlike anything it has ever seen and on a scale that will see the region’s growth skyrocket, says a local expert. By the middle of 2013 local iwi should start to see Treaty of Waitangi settlements from the Government transferred to it, to the tune of an estimated $300400 million. Nelson City Council Maori liaison officer Geoff Mullen says most of that money will be invested in the top of the south and will see growth in the region on a scale never seen before. It comes at a time when Nelson businesses are already experiencing growth with the region’s Economic Development Agency chief executive Bill Findlater

saying Nelson is in for a “bloody exciting” future on the back of the iwi investment and Nelson’s current business expertise, especially in primary production, like growing and producing food. Local iwi and businesses are already engaging in how that money will be invested with a conference to be held in just over a week at Nelson’s Rutherford Hotel. Geoff says the investment will most likely be in horticulture, aquaculture, viticulture and forestry, areas Nelson already does really well in. He says local iwi are unlikely to “blow” their settlement like Taranaki iwi Ngati Tama did earlier this year, investing their

entire settlement into a failed IT company. “There are two reasons that is very unlikely to happen here, one iwi have big brother down the road in Ngai Tahu who has been there and done that and they are very willing to lend their help and expertise. Secondly, and they’ll hate me saying this, but Maori are very conservative investors. They will scrutinise any business before investing.” The investment will “inevitably” see more people moving to the region on the back of the settlement and more Maori-owned companies in Nelson and Tasman says Geoff. “The whole community will benefit from this because Maori see themselves as guardians of this area. They have been here for hundreds of years and will be here hundreds of years from now so their goals are in sync with the rest of the community, clean water, sustainable practices and ensuring future generations have opportunities.”

Bill Findlater says Nelson is on the cusp of a “very bright future” on the back of the food the region produces and the likely investment from iwi. “I have a firm belief that Nelson will be one of the leading regions in New Zealand, it’s bloody exGeoff Mullen. citing. The strength of our region is our primary sector and I would expect iwi to look to our primary sector in different forms to invest in and that will create opportunities not only for iwi but for the rest of the region.” Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the council already has a strong relationship with Maori and the settlement is great news for the region. “It’s the biggest economic development gain in the region and it’s probably one of

the biggest cash injections that Nelson has ever seen. They want to keep the money in the region and they are long-term players so it’s a very good thing. It can only be extremely positive for Nelson.” Four years ago iwi received an aquaculture settlement from the government and Geoff says that experience will help iwi plan and move forward with its latest settlement. “They’ve already started working on collaboration and they’ve started working with a lot of businesses around town discreetly. I think people would be quite amazed where they have got money invested if they knew.” Geoff says most Nelsonians have little idea about the scale of the investment and it will flow to the whole community. “What’s good for Maori is good for the whole community. This isn’t a takeover or a ‘you’ll do it my way now’, it’s actually ‘let’s work in partnership and make a better region’.” The conference for local iwi and businesses is to be held on October 18 and 19 at the Rutherford Hotel.

Nelson Weekly Your Community Newspaper

TO THE EDITOR

I was in hysterics over the recent Nelson Mail story on council spending for marketing. How hypocritical, although very predictable by the Mail reporters. Two things here, a council that communicates keeps confusion and disagreement to a minimum with the ratepayer therefore reducing costs overall. So keep it up Nelson City Council. The Mail story was really a nothing story and I suspect more motivated by early campaigning by a frustrated ex mayoral candidate in Rachel Reese. Also ask yourself why the council chooses the city’s new newspaper over the Mail, it must have something to do with the free-fall of the Mail readership and circulation. The council has an obligation to inform the greater mass and that’s not with the Mail. To Aldo and his team, go for it and brush these lightweights aside. To the Nelson Weekly keep it up it’s nice to be able to disagree and get printed! L Simpson (Mrs), Nelson.

Salisbury School’s last stand Salisbury School representatives hope a last minute meeting with the minister of education can save the school, two weeks after its final submission deadline. Salisbury School principal Brenda Ellis will meet Hekia Parata in Wellington with board of trustees members Helen McDonnell, Peter Campbell and Kelly Wood. Kelly currently has a daughter attending the school while both Helen and Peter have

had children through in the past. The Ministry of Education is looking at closing two schools for students with intellectual disabilities or social-behaviour difficulties in favour of a wrap around service at public schools. It is also encouraging Salisbury School students to attend the co-education Halswell Residential School in Christchurch. The visit to Wellington will be the first time that anyone from the

Trolleys get the power Two of Nelson’s inventive trolley builders came head-to-head on Sunday in a unique challenge. The event was designed as a fun day for trolley enthusiasts and the public, and the challenge was to convert and power a racing trolley using 18 volt power drills. The trolleys raced in Nelson’s first ever Trolley Derby power drill challenge on Sunday with the help of Power Techs new mobile solar charger. Tim Bayley and Gordon Dacombe competed to see whose trolley could get the farthest around the velodrome track at Trafalgar park, and Gordon’s ‘Lightning Racer II’ wowed bystanders reaching speeds of 37km. Tim and Gordon are both members of the Nelson Trolley Club and Gordon’s grandchildren Morgan and Jared

Hey,

prior to our meeting with her on October 16. The doors have not closed on Salisbury yet, and we are doing everything we can to keep them open for the current and future students of Salisbury,” she says. The Ministry of Education released what was expected to be its final decision last month. It gave the school 28 days to challenge the decision to close the school before the end of the year.

Dacombe battled it out at the track in the two creations. The two trolleys were both successful on the day, as Jared lapped Morgan almost three times before running out of juice, while Morgan only reached speed of 19.4km, his batteries outlasted its speedier counterpart by completing two more laps. Gordon enjoyed the friendly competition and was excited to build on the project as an annual day. “We hope this will inspire inventive people in Nelson to say, ‘there’s a challenge I could have a go at’, there’s a lot of people that love building stuff in their shed who would enjoy this.” Power Techs new mobile solar charger came down to provide free recharging of batteries for the racers throughout the day.

Local hairdressers off to nationals Two Nelson hairdressers are off to represent the region at the country’s top hairdressing competition this weekend. Donna James, of Donna James Hair, is a finalist in the urban day section at the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers annual awards, while Louise Wells, of Ursula Harris will compete in the urban colour section of the awards. The duo earned their spot in the national final after winning the regional competition in Blenheim in August. Competing at nationals is

nothing new for Donna, who has won many titles and is the current champion for best photographic shot. Nelson is also the defending supreme team from the last nationals, held in Christchurch two years ago, where Nelson hairdresser Ursula Harris also won the urban day section. Anna Schryvers, of Tonic in Richmond, was selected for the team in the directional cut, urban night section but was unable to attend. The four person supreme team is rounded out by two Blenheim hairdressers.

Going to the Arts Festival?

Local nurse Faith Fawcett’s vacation has been a rather eye-opening trip. The Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village nurse is currently in West Africa helping hundreds of blind patients see again with a simple cataract operation. Faith is volunteering her nursing skills aboard Africa Mercy, the world’s largest charity hospital ship, operated by Mercy Ships. During her two month tour-of-duty in Conakry, Guinea Faith is part of the team running the ship’s eye clinics. She says the most impacting experience she has had during her service in Africa has been seeing the eye bandages come off her first patient the day after surgery. She watched her patient’s face simply light up as she realised that she could see again. Faith is the day-of-surgery eye nurse and

does patient screening, pre-operative and post operative care. “Onboard, my role is to put the necessary eye drops in prior to surgery - to anaesthetize the eye, then dilate the pupil, then a drop to sterilize. I also help gown up the patients, take their blood pressure and temperature, and wait with them for the call to theatre.” The mercy ship Africa Mercy is two football fields long, seven stories high and provides a unique transportable healthcare platform for the crew to treat the poorest of the poor in the developing nations of Africa’s West Coast. A steady stream of Kiwi volunteers help provide the health care services onboard for 70 patients at a time in general and intensive care wards, and the ship’s six operating theatres.

Airport is best in NZ Nelson Airport has won the prestigious Airport of the Year award for the third time. Nelson Airport Ltd is New Zealand’s fourth busiest airport with over 800,000 passengers a year, putting it in the major airport category at the NZ Airports Awards dinner in Christchurch on Friday night. Nelson is the only airport to have won the Interspace Airport Cup three times in 2008, 2010 and now 2012. Chief executive Kaye McNabb says she was “absolutely gobsmacked” with the win. “It’s a huge team effort from a very small team, but it’s only made possible by the co-operation and attitude of all of the other businesses that contribute to the atmosphere and service that makes Nelson Airport so successful,” she says. Airport CEO Judges considerations Kaye McNabb. included Nelson Airport Ltd’s considerable contribution to aviation business growth through the Top of the South Aviation Strategy and its contribution towards regional and national economic growth. Work with NZ Airports Association, Ministry for the Environment and local councils on environmental effects and risks for the airport were also noted. Nelson Airport’s relationship with its community, and in particular its support for the Heart of Biking Cycleway trail, impressed the judges who made particular mention of the fruit tree planting initiative in their comments.

Hanging baskets ready for relaunch Sinead Ogilvie Nelson's iconic hanging flower baskets are ready to go up, and with 800 baskets set to bloom expect a colourful array on our streets this summer. The vibrant show will be put up next week, and will take up to 30 volunteers a day and five days to complete, and that’s just the planting and hanging of the baskets. The tradition began 12 years ago, and local businesses and the public show a huge amount of support each year, either buying a basket for outside their shop or volunteering their time to help plant them, says Nelmac. The project is implemented by the Nelson City Council and overseen by Mike Gafa, team leader at Nelmac nursery who has been with the hanging baskets project since it all began, and he says the baskets are all about bringing Nelson’s “streets to life” for the summer season. Planning for the arrangements started back in May, when last season’s flowers were coming down and turning to compost, Nelmac Nursery staff began their busy selection process for the season ahead, deciding on what flowers to use for the bright displays. Mike says that after years of putting the project together, the team has used a bit of kiwi ingenuity to deliver the colourful show for the community, creating tools,

Alice Buschl and Mike Gafa, from the Nelmac Nursery team with some of the flowers that will be going up in the Nelson CBD this week. Photo: Sinead Ogilive. and growing the plants chemical free to ensure sustainability. “Each year we look at efficiencies, how we can do things better, we are the only people that use biodegradable pots, and we have created our own potting mix. We put a lot of thought into our own innovations to make the job run

really smoothly and sustainably.” Mike says the idea is all about bringing smiles to faces in Nelson, and people always look forward to seeing the flowers up. “The best part for us is not only the comments ‘oh are you taking the flowers down?’ at the end of the season, but at the

start of the season when people say ‘ when are you putting the flowers up?’ that’s the most exciting thing.” The many volunteers will begin planting the flowers on Monday, and the hanging flower baskets should be gracing the streets by the end of next week.

Nelson’s newest national sporting team is asking its future fans to help give it a name. The consortium behind the bid to bring a ASB national youth league football team to Nelson is launching a competition – in conjunction with Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly newspapers – to come up with a name for the new team. The Nelson-based team will draw on players from the top of the south and has a goal of developing the region’s best young players to higher honours. The bid to enter the competition was confirmed by New Zealand Football last month. The consortium is also hoping to apply for a full

ASB Premiership team in the coming seasons. To enter the competition, email your idea for a team name to topsouthfootball@gmail.com. The winner will be invited to sit in the corporate box for the team’s first home game and receive other prizes. The Top-of-the-South consortium is also calling for expressions of interest from coaches and players with trials to be held on October 27 and 28. The group are also looking for businesses that would like to sponsor the team. To register your interest about being a part of the Nelson ASB Youth League team, email your details to topsouthfootball@gmail.com.

The following meeting on 24 November sees the mighty Sprintcars make their return to Nelson, with a round of the War of the Wings being held here again. Being early in the season a full field of top competitors is expected. The Sprintcars are supported by the Midget Club Champs, the Mark Thorn Memorial for Sidecars and the Stockcar triple. The Tigers get their second home track outing of the season when the mighty Wellington Wildcats return on 8 December after many years in hibernation. This will be a hard fought battle with both teams keen to start with a win in what is hoped will be an ongoing challenge. The following meeting on 15 December features what is becoming a must

The final meeting of the year is on 29 December and will see the TQ Midgets, Superstocks and Sidecars all competing in their respective club championships. A small break over New Year gives the club the time to focus on hosting the New Zealand Home Loans NZ Superstock Championship on 11 and 12 January. The Superstock Champs is the jewel in the speedway crown and Nelson last hosted it in 2003/04. most talented drivers in the country and there is definitely a real opportunity to crown a home track champion. The other major promotions that round out the rest of the season are the Classic Hits Demolition Derby, the Sturgeons Amusements King of the Clay, the two day Stanaway Roading Stock Shock, Stockcar teams racing between the Tasman Thunder and the Greymouth Grizzlies and the return of the Winged Warriors-Modifieds. There are a number of support promotions planned to complement the main events and to ensure that fans of all classes leave every meeting happy. Some classes are introducing alternative formats to traditional events such as their club championships in an effort to continue to attract the fans and hopefully a few more visiting drivers. Our youngest members haven’t been forgotten and the Burger King Junior members club has some fun things planned for you. Make sure you get along to the souvenir shop and sign up. There are plenty of Coca Cola goodies hidden away to give out on fireworks night and plans are already under way for your Christmas party. This season the club has also made

changes to ensure that every tummy also leaves fully satisfied with new food vendors trading inside the arena, providing such delights as baked potatoes, nachos and fresh coffees. You can still enjoy a traditional hotdog and chips or a selection of hot foods from the McCall shop as well as cold drinks, ice cream and confectionery. We have had to make a slight increase to gate prices but, in an effort to ensure families do not have to miss their night out, these have been made to members and pensioner prices which have increased to $10. Adults are still $15 and a family pass for two adults and up to three children remains at only $300. For up to date information, photos, gossip etc make sure you join our Nelson Speedway Facebook group or check out the club website www. nelsonspeedway.co.nz. Obviously we hope the weather is kinder to us than last season but in the event of unsettled weather cancellations will be broadcast on Classic Hits and posted on the website. Enjoy your summer speedway season which kicks off this Saturday night at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway in Lansdowne Road Appleby. Gates open at 6pm with racing from 7pm.

Top four for Nayland basketballers Nayland College has established itself as one of New Zealand basketball's heavyweights, securing a record equalling fourth place at the national secondary school AA championship in Nelson last week. Nayland were knocked out of finals contention by defending champions Rosmini College, going down 87-76 at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night. Nayland then lost to another defeated semi-finalist Hutt Valley High School in the third/fourth playoff but had strong showings against Burnside High School in the quarter finals after topping pool three with only one loss to its name. It is the second time in just three years the side has made it to the semi-finals and the second time its players have made the tournament's selection squad. Sharpshooter Locky Campion earned individual praise from Basketball New Zealand but he wasn't alone in making strong performances throughout the tournament. Nayland College coach Chris Tupu relied heavily on a core of six players with young Nelson Giants big man Angus Riley completing a heavy work load while Scott Cameron and Nathan Dempster were also outstanding throughout the week.

The future looks even brighter with young guns Jonas Kale and Toma Noguchi making significant contributions in the playoffs while Angus and Locky will still remain as key figures for at least another two years. The Nayland College noise crew gave the team a clear edge with dozens of maroonclad fans chanting at each fixture. The tournament was eventu-

ally won by Westlake Boys High School with its key player, Tall Black Tai Webster claiming the MVP award. Nelson College, who were one game away from reaching the quarter finals before being beaten by Nayland College in the final pool three match, ended the tournament with a creditable 14th placing. Finn Delaney had a strong tournament for the only other home side at the tournament.

Nelson cycle fest takes off

The Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle hit the ground round with two of its key events being staged on the event’s first weekend. The festival began in the Moutere Hills for round six of the Benchmark Series with two Nelson riders ending Saturday with the leader’s jersey. The race started from Lower Moutere School. A break was firmly established towards the end of the first lap of the race with most of the teams represented in it, including a strong team from Cycling Otago. The Tasman Wheelers were forced to chase for most of the race to protect the general classification hopes of team leader Chris Nicholson. The third time the race headed down the Motueka Valley Highway the main field had nearly caught the breakaway group but failed to maintain the momentum with the race splitting up in the closing kilometres as a result of the trying conditions. Brad Evans won a close fought sprint finish from Brad Tuhi of the Homestyle Test Team with Darcy Ellerm-Norton of Benchmark Homes Cycling Team third. Chris has moved into the leader’s jersey with Brad, who races for Cycling Otago, picking up the Under-23 jersey and Mark Spessot of Cycle World taking the master’s jersey. The women’s race set off 20 minutes after the men and was slow to get start-

ed. Some aggressive riding from Karen Fulton over the Waiwheros managed to form a break of four. Eloise Fry, who was a last minute ring in for the Otago team, initially tried to close the gap but the group managed to stay away. On the final lap Reta Trotman of Cycling Otago attacked several times over the Waiwheros dropping Karen. There was a close sprint for the finish with Reta just beating Benchmark Homes duo of Sharlotte Lucas and Hayley Mercer. Karen finished fourth and still retains the leader’s jersey. The second key event of the Nelson Cycle Festival was one of its more unique races with cyclists rounding the Nelson Cathedral for the Nelson City Criterium. Weather conditions were a vast improvement from Saturday and the sunshine and the special course drew a good group of spectators throughout the afternoon. A number of cyclists followed up from the Benchmark Series and it was Ian Smallman who took first place in the men’s A grade race followed by Kieran Hambrook and Brad Tuhi. Other grade winners included Felix Laufkotter in the opening B grade race, Wayne Pool in the C grade event, Ethan Batt in D grade and Mike Yate in the E grade race. Shaane Fulton was first place in the junior event. For more on the festival visit www.nelsoncyclefest.co.nz.

Have a clean, hygienic and pest free summer It’s timely for business and homeowners to consider how best to set up work and the home environment for a clean, hygienic and pest free summer this spring. Carpet Cleaning - Following the winter carpets are generally at their worst with soiling, stains and ingrained dirt and odour. In this state they’re less hygienic and a potential harbourage for mites, fleas and potentially harmful bacteria and viruses and pose a hazard to asthma sufferers and immune compromised people. Have your carpets cleaned for health and to prolong your carpets life - not just looks alone. The only way to clean carpet for health is to use the hot water extraction method. This method involves truck-mounted machines that heat the water to a level that will kill bacteria and virus, flushing carpet from the tip to deep down on the fibre base. Enviro only uses this hot water extraction method combined with cleaning solutions that have the international CRI Gold Seal of Approval and are biodegradable. Failing to remove ingrained soiling severely reduces the life of a carpet and the aesthetic appearance drops off rapidly leaving the carpet looking old, dirty and worn with tracking marks in high foot traffic areas. It’s really important to remove this ingrained soil from low down in the carpet fibres to prevent this from worsening and becoming permanent. We often hear from clients that the carpet looked really good for the first three or so years and rapidly deteriorated after this. This is due to the abrasive action of

the fine sand like soil permanently damaging the carpet fibres. Enviro’s technicians are IICRC certified in carpet cleaning, stain removal, mould remediation, odour control, flood and fire restoration. Pest Control - Springtime is the most effective pre-emptive time for pest control management for flies, fleas, ants and spiders. As the ambient temperatures increase new life cycles start and insect pests become more active and visible. What seemed a minor infestation over the cooler months may turn into a full scale nuisance or health risk. Early preventative spraying for spiders and flies is the most effective means of preventing a problem developing later in the season. Our Enviro operators are approved handlers and Urban Pest Management certified to ensure that they have the appropriate training and experience in product selection, safe handling, the required understanding of etymology and the correct tools, products and application methods required to keep homes, businesses, pets and people safe. In order to ensure the safety of you and your family or employees and compliance with regulations always ensure your technician has EPA approval and holds an Approved Handler Certificate. If you would like to discuss your carpet cleaning, pest control requirements or any of our other services please call us on 548 2831 or 0800 744 272 for 24/7 response. Business Update. Adv.
