A new Tasman Rugby initiative designed to keep young players in the game has been praised by some, but described as “bubble wrapping” that will only punish up and comers, by others.

The plan is designed to help prevent score blowouts in junior

rugby which has been a “problem area,” according to age grade coordinator George Vance.

He says big score lines, bad sportsmanship, poor coach and side-line behaviour have all resulted in a “concerning drop off ” in teenage numbers.

So in a bid to curb this trend, the TRU have made some radical

changes to the junior competition. In a first for the country, a mercy rule will be implemented to avoid lop-sided games.

When a team takes a lead of 35 points, coaches must come together to discuss the game situation.

Once the lead hits 50, coaches must make changes or mix teams.

Bonus points and points differential will also be scrapped.

George says the hope is the changes will bring enjoyment and excitement back into community rugby. “These initiatives aim to encourage meaningful competition, sportsmanship and player development.”

The general consensus from jun-

ior rugby delegates is that the changes will benefit younger players.

He believes the initiative will strengthen the core values that children learn from sport, including building bonds, learning to trust, being reliable, resilient, honest and showing integrity.

“This will need to be accepted by both coaches on the day because when you’re on the losing side it’s always hard to accept the help, but as long as they look at it as a positive for the kids it will make them better coaches too.”

Mako head coach and former All Black Leon MacDonald says anything that makes the game more enjoyable for children is a good addition.

“Too many kids are giving the game up after being on the receiving end of some big loses every week.”

Gargiulo says, ultimately, junior rugby should be about skill development and no one benefits from a 100-0 score line.

“In saying that, I still think it is important that we promote winning and teach younger players to deal with the emotions that come with winning and losing.”

Nathan says its success will ultimately rely on how individual coaches manage score blowouts.

He says the coach of a team that is being beaten consistently needs to find ways of allowing their team to feel a sense of success by having targets each week that aren’t focused on the scoreboard.

Master in charge of rugby at Nelson College Peter Grigg says, while there are often more “learnings” to a team in defeat than in a victory, continuous and large defeats could put kids off the game.

However, not all members of the rugby community are on board with the changes.

Jason Beard’s son plays underseven rippa rugby and he believes the rule changes are “ridiculous”.

“That’s just bubble wrapping children and punishing the kids who are good at what they do.”

Jason says kids will not respond well to being taken off their own team. “That’s negative for the whole team-building thing in its entirety, that’s the main point of kids’ rugby, to build that camaraderie.”

He says having a winner and a loser is just a fact of life.

“I’d like to know who dreamed this up and thought it was a good idea, it just seems mad.”

Lisa Trusler is new to the junior rugby coaching scene and believes the new plan will be detrimental to young players.

“Kids at this age don’t really care

about the score, it’s all about getting out there and doing it, so I think they’re just making it harder in the long run.”

Lisa, who has just started a coaching role with her five-yearold son’s Nelson team, says the world is “so PC now” that kids aren’t allowed to lose.

“It doesn’t mean that they’re not playing properly or trying their hardest, but you can’t always win.”

She says being on the end of the occasional hiding builds resilience. “Kids should be playing as a team rather than swapping from one team to the other just because they’re better.”

Lisa says her son just wants to get out there with his mates and won’t be put off by losing.

“I think it will make him stronger, will make him want to get out there and play harder the next week.”

Mental health silence ‘slap in the face’ Charles Anderson Editor

The driving force behind a petition to reverse changes to youth mental health services says the silence from the Government on the issue feels like a “slap in the face.”

Zoe Palmer, 17, has already gathered almost 1300 signatures over Nelson Marlborough Health’s proposed changes to the on-call Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) crisis team.

Under the review, the afterhours CAMHS team, which provides specialist help to young people at risk, would be replaced by a more general team.

“As a CAMHS client myself we should have been asked, but we heard nothing until it was announced,” Zoe says. “There was just a complete lack of collaborative process.”

But it is the silence from politicians which irks her the most.

Last year, then-local Labour candidate Rachel Boyack and now Health Minister David Clark came to Nelson and spoke strongly about the importance of youth mental health services in the region.

Rachel herself launched her own petition last year dedicated to preserving CAMHS. However, now Zoe says there has been no indication of the Government’s position on the CAMHS issue.

“It’s a slap in the face for people who voted for those parties,” she says. “I’m not sure why people at the top have stopped speaking out about it.

It is still an issue and it hasn’t gone away.”

Between 1992 and 2013 there were 72 youth suicides in the Nelson Marlborough region, according to the Ministry of Health data.

Rachel Boyack told the Nelson Weekly that her position had always been that CAMHS should be retained as is, and has written to the minister about the issue.

“My view has always been that it should be put on hold until the mental health review happened. I haven’t gone quiet on that. My view has always been that and still believe that this service should be retained as it is.”

The Government recently announced a nationwide mental health inquiry which was driven by a widespread concern, both from within and outside the sector, that mental health and addiction services were at crisis point and struggling to cope with the increase in demand. A report is due back to government by October.

Rachel says her hope was that her petition, that she launched last year, would be added to Zoe’s.

The Nelson Weekly sought comment from Health Minister David Clark but did not hear a reply by the time of publication.

Changes to forestry needed to ‘save’ Maitai River Sara Hollyman Reporter

Friends of the Maitai is calling on Nelson City Council to take action on forestry practice.

The aftermath of Cyclone Gita has bought forestry into the spotlight, after slash and silt devastated Marahau, Riwaka and the Motueka Valley.

Friends of the Maitai spokesperson Tom Kennedy said the Maitai was also affected by sediment from forestry. The group was supportive of the work done by council under its Project Maitai-Mahitahi, but Tom says significant action needed to be taken on forestry.

“We have been pleased to work alongside council on issues such as water-testing, community education and planting days.

“However, we’ve struck a block in getting any positive changes to forestry practice which is the real source of the sediment in the river. Until that is

addressed there will be no improvement in the water quality, the recurrence of toxic algae and the threat to bio-diversity,” he says.

Tom says research by Cawthron and NIWA backs the groups view that there will be no significant improvement in water quality until forestry companies reduce the sediment coming from cut-over areas.

“The forestry sector needs to reduce the size of clear felled areas, do more riparian planting, particularly in smaller streams and gullies, and diversify away from mono-culture Pinus radiata.

“We’ve had meetings with forestry companies, but realistically these steps won’t happen without action from council.”

Nelson City Council environmental management group manager Clare Barton says that NCC is exploring options to deliver biodiversity and water quality gains and provide controls for sediment sources in

both urban and rural settings.

New environmental standards from Ministry of Primary Industries, which come into effect on May 1, provide a single set of regulations that apply to foresters throughout New Zealand “As a forestry owner, council is incorporating the new standards into its management processes, including retiring some blocks where appropriate.

“Council has a role to enforce these new standards, and we will be working with the industry to help it manage operations in line with the new requirements. Council’s compliance team actively investigates issues, including those associated with forestry, and takes action where appropriate.”

Clare also says that NCC has expanded its commitment to water quality over the last three years and is proposing further investment in this area through the draft Long Term Plan.

Airport walkway still closed: The entire Nelson Airport perimeter walkway is still closed after being damaged by the storm surge on February 1. Airport operations and assets manager David Scott says they are currently in the process of replacing security fencing and re-marking where the new walking track will be. “The walkway is a much-loved activity for many Nelsonians and visitors, and we are working hard to have it reinstated for public use in the very near future,” he says.

Nelson broadband data consumption on the rise: Nelson and Tasman households are consuming much more broadband data than last year. The increase in broadband use is driven by surging demand for streaming services such as Netflix, according to new statistics from Chorus. The average Nelson home used 153GB of broadband data in March 2018 compared to 124GB in 2017, an increase of 23.4 percent. Nationally, the average New Zealand home used about 139GB of broadband data in March 2017 – this figure sits at 185GB for March 2018, showing more than a 30 percent increase.

Construction is well underway on Nelson Airport’s $32m terminal redevelopment.

The first of the roof triangles were lifted into place in midFebruary – each weighing 6.5 tonnes and made from locally-

produced, laminated veneer lumber.

The first stage of the development is expected to be completed by August, with the completed section of the building to be used as the new airport while the current terminal is demolished.

The rest of the terminal building is expected to be completed around August 2019.

With the 103rd anniversary of ANZAC Day fast approaching it has been a time of reflection.

One hundred years ago, after three long years, the reality and brutality of war had totally disenchanted the Allies’ 1914 expectations of a short decisive exercise.

New Zealand sent more young people as a percentage of population than any other allied country. Our servicemen suffered horrendous conditions and disasters with great loss of life in Gallipoli and on the Western Front. These disasters have been remembered and marked with ceremonies throughout New Zealand and Australia.

In the Middle East in 1916, the ANZAC Mounted Infantry Division was set up as part of what was known as the “Palestine Campaign to defeat the Ottoman Empire and its German supporters”.

At the end of 1915 command of the division was given to Major General Edward Chaytor.

Chaytor had been born in Motueka in 1868, was educated at Nelson College and served in the Boer war in South Africa.

Under Chaytor the division

Major General Sir Edward Chaytor. was instrumental in achieving outstanding victories, particularly in 1918 in the battle of Megiddo.

Here, in September, what became known as "Chaytor’s Force" utilised the mobility of the mounted division to capture the cities of Es Salt and Amman. Chaytor's Force suffered 27 killed, 7 missing, 105 wounded, and it captured 10,322 prisoners, 57 artillery guns and 147 machine guns.

On the September 26, 1918, the overall Commander General E H H Allenby wrote: "I desire to convey to all members of

the force under my command, my admiration and thanks for their great deeds of the past weeks, and my appreciation of their gallantry and determination which have resulted in the total destruction of the seventh and eighth Turkish Armies opposed to us."

Such a complete victory has seldom been known in all history of war.

I believe that Chaytor was one of the heroes of World War One and it is time for his achievements to be better remembered in New Zealand and particularly in Nelson, and as we approach the 11 November Armistice Day we can allow ourselves to think with pride about an outstanding victory which hastened the end of the war, which was mistakenly thought to be the war to end all wars.

Nelson City Councillor Ian Barker’s father was a mounted rifleman in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Brigade which was part of Chaytor’s Force. Ian is contemplating retracing his father's 100 year old footsteps in Jordan in September and is keen to hear from any other descendants or people interested in accompanying him.

New magazine for Nelson Nelson has a new lifestyle magazine dedicated to the city and its people.

Nelson Magazine launched earlier this month and features articles written by Nelsonians for Nelsonians.

The monthly magazine is free to pick up at various drop points in Stoke, Tahunanui, Nelson, Bishopdale and Atawhai. It is the only magazine on the market which focuses exclusively on Nelson, with others also encompassing Marlborough.

It all started with a few scraps of fabric and a childhood dream, but now Nelson woman Bobby-Lee Wadsworth is dressing brides all over the world.

The solo mum’s bridal gown label ‘Wild and White’, launched late last year, and has caught the eye of brides-to-be everywhere.

Born and bred in Nelson, BobbyLee lived in Wellington, Dunedin and Auckland to earn her qualifications and start her career in designing bespoke bridal gowns.

But after having her now threeyear-old son and moving back home, she was unsure what to do.

“Then one day I just started playing with leftover lace, chiffon, satin and scraps of old dresses and combined them together to make gowns, and then did some sneak peeks on social media to spark some interest.”

Nearly a year later those sneak peeks have earned her more than 6000 followers on Instagram and orders from all over the country – and the world.

The 30-year-old says she draws her inspiration from a bride’s personality and describes her style as catering for “the modern bride who still likes the idea of a classic wedding”.

“There is nothing more magical then seeing a bride try on a dress for the first time,” says Bobby-Lee. “Designing dresses is more about being part of making a difference in someone’s life, even if for just one day. It really is more than just the dress - it’s the relationship that is built throughout the process.”

Bobby-Lee will be opening a boutique from her home, where she also does alterations, at the end of April with over 30 gowns on display. She will also be donating five per cent of all her profits to Women’s Refuge.

She says it’s a dream come true.

“I’ve wanted to do this since I was little” she says.

“My grandma taught me to sew and helped me make my first dress when I was seven. And now I’ve gone from having a little studio doing alternations at the back of Fabric Barn, to this.

Jonty Dine The new Nelson Tasman Hospice facility is on track for completion in early 2019 with staff and patients set to move in next March.

Steady progress is being made at the Suffolk Rd site in Stoke with key stakeholders being offered a tour on Friday morning.

The total cost of the new facility is $11.5 million, with the hospice contributing $7.5 million.

This left the hospice needing a further $4 million of which they have already raised more than half.

Marketing and fundraising manager Paul McIntyre says the community businesses and grant bodies had responded with amazing generosity.

“We have no government funding for this project, so we really do rely on the kindness of our wonderful community.”

The design for the new hospice includes 10 patient units, day stay rooms and outdoor areas.

A feature of the new site will be a extensive surrounding garden with more than 170 tree types being planted in the next six weeks. Wheelchair accessible pathways will be installed so patients can relax in the serenity.

Hospice CEO Frans Dellebeke is delighted with the progress.

“There has been some challenging weather they have had to deal with so it’s really exciting to be at this point and to show how well the building is going.”

The hospice cares for over 160 patients at any one time, with most being looked after in their own homes in the Nelson Tasman region.

Your Voice BBC puts Nelson in the spotlight After reading about what Sara Hollyman wrote on last week’s front page about a local real-estate agent wanting to encourage more people to come to Nelson from the UK and then turning to the ‘Nelson Matters’ column by Nick Smith, I find a big difference between the two.

The first article is trying to get more people here when the growth rate for the region is already too much and Nick is saying that the roads can no longer cope, plus our younger generation can no longer afford to buy a home as people coming into the region have the money to outbid locals.

So Nelson is now over populated. Roger Jones Seriously! Toi Toi, Enner Glynn and Hira? These are the places I'd advise immigrants to avoid if relocating to Nelson. Not a good representation of Nelson at all. Gary Scott Have they got room for more? Send them rural, especially doctors, specialists, etc if professionally trained.

I welcome the diversity of lifestyle choices that people in Nelson make from the professional lawyer or doctor who chooses to earn a fraction of what they could in a major city, to the person who lives selfsufficiently on an isolated back block. However, this freedom does not entitle you to other’s money to pay for your lifestyle choice, nor does it mean you can ignore parking rules that everyone else must comply with.

I wish Mr Stanton well. Living on Trafalgar Street was as unpleasant and unhealthy for Mr Stanton as it was for Nelson city.

I hope he can find happiness in a lifestyle of his choice. However, Nelson city ratepayers should be paying none of his bills.

Breathing life into Nelson’s newspaper history Charles Anderson When Renee Hadlow first walked into Founders Heritage Park asking for a studio space to set up her printmaking and letter press business, there was no doubt about the right spot for her.

Housed inside the Nelson Evening Mail replica offices was a plethora of old printing presses, ranging from 1860 to the 1980s. There was old lettering from myriad advertisements - from ones showcasing Tahunanui in the 1940s to Datsun cars in the 1970s.

“I walked in and thought ‘oh, my goodness’,” Renee says. “It was one of those epiphany moments where I saw all this beautiful old printmaking gear.”

For her business, The Armarie Room, it was printmaking heaven. But there was also a lot of work to do – boxes that needed to be categorised and sorted and machines that needed to be serviced. For the past year Renee has been part artist, part archivist and part curator.

But now, almost a year after she moved in, she is ready to showcase her work. As part of Heritage Week she will host a typesetting work shop and another open day to let people come and see how Nelson was documented in newspapers for most of its 150 years.

However, it has been a journey.

“People came from everywhere – from Christchurch and Dunedin and even locally to help bring these machines to life.”

The oldest machine is an 1860 press, modelled off the earliest presses ever made. There is also a linotype machine where an operator would manually input news

articles to appear on the page.

They have all been moved around to make space and give the old Mail building a more welcoming feel.

The management staff at Founders told Renee they wanted the equipment to be used rather than sitting static. “And they have been around for many, many years.

They aren’t going to break.”

Renee says there has been a massive revival in using old methods to create pieces of art.

“You can do all the design work off computer then you use these older machines to get the lovely feel – you can literally see the ink on the paper. It’s tactile and the paper is luscious.”

She says, reflecting on her mission, that it feels like it was meant to be. Now Nelsonians can also enjoy the fruits of that mission – preserving a part of our history.

Four Nelson College for Girls students have this year joined the IHC volunteer one-to-one friendship programme. The programme involves pairing individuals with a new friend who is self-referred through IHC. Nelson Marlborough Volunteer Co-Ordinator Jane Peoples says it’s about opening another social circle for vulnerable people and enriching the lives of volunteers.

“I’ve always been of the mind that it’s good to give back to your community. It’s important that young people and vulnerable people have others they can trust and talk to.

It’s not paid, it’s a real friendship and they have each other’s back.”

In an office in Tahunanui two local entrepreneurs are building whole new worlds.

Jacob Barrow cut his teeth as a visual effects artist for Weta Digital - working on films like Avatar and The Avengers. Myles Montgomery is an architectural designer who has made a career visualising spaces for architects and, individually, they both found themselves interested in the world of virtual reality, and so Shadow Space was born.

“Virtual reality has been around for 30 years but it’s only in the last five years that it has started to get really good,” says Jacob.

After his contract with Weta ended, he was looking for something else to do. His parents were building a house, so he decided to create a virtual reality rendering of the proposed plans.

He created the space, put materials on the wall and grass on the landscape, and then gave his mum a headset to put on and experience her new, unbuilt house.

“She was blown away. She could understand the space and see how big the bedroom was going to be and how far away things would look.

“Virtual reality games and things are great, but they are not really solving a problem.

This was definitely solving a problem. People find it hard to visualise space.”

Myles had been working in this area for some time while working in Melbourne.

When he was planning on coming back to Nelson with his young family he was looking around for people in New Zealand that could help create virtual worlds.

Myles and Jacob met up and realised that they could partner and start creating an experience for potential clients.

Their first job was for highend golf course accommodation in the North Island.

The client was impressed and commissioned them to create something at a much grander scale for their next development.

They have built a village that you can walk around and see – long before anything has been built. They created an interactive, touch screen platform that can sit in a sales office and let people visualise what they are getting into before signing on the dotted line. But it’s not just property developers or architects who

can benefit from the platform, they say.

“You can use it for so many things,” says Myles. “You could have it in a tourism information centre where different operators are showcased – from a virtual helicopter tour or skydiving. It allows you to have a slice of the experience.”

Jacob says there is a lot of untapped potential within this new technology.

“We are just trying to build the future.”

BE AWARE OF OVERHEAD POWER LINES Always check where overhead power lines and cables are situated before using outdoor objects such as ladders, pool skimmers or erecting clotheslines, TV antennas or any tall object near your home. TV antennas must not be fixed above, or adjacent to, any power lines. For example, metal ladders are excellent conductors of electricity.

Anyone touching a ladder when it is touching a power line could be electrocuted. Wind, uneven ground or reaching to the side while on a ladder, could cause it to shift position and you could come into contact with an overhead power line.

Flying kites near power lines is extremely dangerous to the kite flyer and can disrupt power to other consumers. When playing with kites or any toys that could touch overhead power lines, it’s advisable to use open spaces such as a field or park.

Resealing on Waimea Road The section of Waimea Road from the Hampden Street intersection to Cox Lane (next to Admirals Motor Inn) is being resealed during the school holidays, from 14 to 23 April, weather permitting.

Lanes will be open in both directions during the day, but speed restrictions will be in place, so expect some delays. Take an alternative route if possible.

There will be a stop/go set up at the Hampden Street Intersection and a contraflow system at the Van Diemen Street intersection during the day.

The timing of the resealing work has be planned for the school holidays when there is less traffic on this section of the road and also to coincide with the completion of the NZ Transport Agency’s work on Rocks Road so this alternative route is clear of restrictions.

Please be patient and take care around the work site while we aim to complete the work quickly and safely.

Future stormwater work is planned for the remaining stretch of Waimea Road, linking with Rutherford Street, so resealing of that section will happen once that work is completed.

School students time travel at Nelson Heritage Festival Dan Turinsky and his dad collaborated at home to bring a historical transport chariot "machine" to life as part of the Enviroschools Time Travel Challenge at the Nelson Heritage Festival last week.

Dan was inspired by the challenge and wanted to give it a go.

“Mum said, ‘Dad’s a bit of a genius when it comes to this sort of thing’, I just helped paint it,” Dan said.

Dan is part of the senior student organising committee for the Nelson Central School participation in the Time Travel Challenge.

The Nelson Heritage Festival event inspired Nelson Enviroschool students to develop their ideas about active travel and link them to how their grandparents and greatgrandparents may have travelled to and from school.

Four Enviroschools participated in the three-day active travel challenge, which included Victorian dress-ups, where students compared photos of modern-day Nelson to historical photos, and learned about travelling as a character from the past.

Draft swimmability targets for Nelson Nelson City Council has set draft targets for E.coli levels in our medium sized (fourth order) rivers.

These include the Whangamoa, Wakapuaka, Maitai and Roding Rivers. We are required to do this under the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management.

Nelson’s Draft Target is that 100 per cent of our fourth order rivers continue to be swimmable, i.e. meet national primary contact E.coli limits.

Accessible Parking Reminder Council would like to remind people that disabled car park spaces are provided for mobility card users only.

Able-bodied drivers should remember that using these spaces without a permit not only attracts a fine of up to $150, but can cause distress and inconvenience to people who really need them.

Accessible car parks are a limited resource and are specially designed for people who need more space around their vehicle to get in and out, as well as being located close to essential services. Many mobility permit users cannot get in or out of their vehicle in a normal parking space, so parking somewhere else is not an option. By using one without a permit you may be preventing someone getting to a doctor’s appointment or being able to get to the bank or post office.

There are 60 accessible car parks in the city centre, providing access for those with reduced mobility to the city centre’s shops and cafes as well as to essential services such as doctor’s surgeries, pharmacies and banks. There are also eight accessible ATM machines, 14 accessible public toilets and an accessible post box. The locations of these facilities are shown on the Accessibility Map which can be downloaded from Council’s website.

The first site to be tackled is the Wakefield Quay Settlers Memorial timber deck walkway. Work starts on site this week (from 16 April) and is expected to finish towards the end of May. Repairs will then move to the nearby Friendship stairs that give access to the small beach area. This should be finished by the beginning of June and the focus will shift to repairing the damage to the Seafarers timber deck walkway. This final stage of work should be completed by the end of July.

All dates are approximate as the repairs are very weather dependant.

If you are visiting any of the areas while work is in progress, please take extra care and follow any signage in place or directions from contractors. Please also keep away from under the structures during low tide.

Fast forward to 2018 and the Nelson Centre Of Musical Arts is close to completion.

New beginnings for beloved old music school It’s a time of new beginnings for our much-loved historic music school; its transformation is all but finished, allowing it to now flourish under its new name, Nelson Centre of Musical Arts or NCMA. Thanks to the stunning work by a local building company Coman Construction, the earthquake strengthening of the auditorium is now complete, a new recital theatre, new teaching studios and green rooms have been built,

the original façade has been restored, and its fabulous new foyer is ready to receive people through its stately new glass doors!

It has been a quite a turbulent journey for NCMA in recent years, but it has emerged triumphant and majestic; its structural and architectural work has honoured the building’s history, with some very tasteful modernisation.

With an original redevelopment budget of 6.4 million

dollars, the scope of the project was to carry out earthquake strengthening work of the auditorium, install new seating and improved heating and cooling systems, whilst ensuring that the wonderful acoustics in the auditorium were preserved.

The project has also involved updating the sound systems, redeveloping the entrance foyer and ticket desk as well as toilet facilities in the Beatrice Kidson building and the con-

struction of the new recital theatre and teaching studios.

At the end of 2016, NCMA was granted an additional 1.5 million dollars by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, which allowed for the refurbishment and reinstatement of the Cawthron Organ and to put its Victorian features back on the auditorium roof.

Local fund-raising efforts also helped pay for the project. However, there was an unexpected blowout of projected costs in the latter stages amounting to 900,000 dollars. Nelson City Council and the Nelson School of Music Endowment Trust Board came to the rescue to meet this shortfall.

Now that all the wonderful refurbishments of the music establishment are almost complete, the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts is looking forward to fully embracing its exciting future and is celebrating the new development with a dawn blessing on Wednesday, April 18th.

Opening celebrations Robyn Sheves, NCMA’s Communications Manager says, “Locals will be able to get back into the auditorium to see the improvements for themselves this Saturday (21st April) for NCMA artist in residence, Michael Tsalka’s, final concert (entry by koha, with no reserved seating).”

Michael’s concert marks the start of a series of concerts and performances in the coming weeks and months.

“When we first booked Michael to come to Nelson, he was originally going to work and perform as part of our opening celebrations.

However, with various project delays this wasn’t possible and we had to find alternative venues for his performances.

Only very recently did we realise that our Steinway piano was being moved back into the auditorium on the 20th April, and that Michael would be able to perform in the auditorium after all.

There are several factors involved we need to look at.

Home ventilation systems draw warm filtered air from the roof space and move it into areas such as bedrooms & lounges where condensation is created by the occupants. Areas where moisture is created, laundries, bathrooms & kitchens, require extraction fans that vent moist air outside.

Some poorly installed extraction fans are not adequate enough and in some cases vent moisture directly into the roof space rather than outside.

This situation should be addressed before the installation of any home ventilation system. Ventilation systems may also incorporate a heat transfer function. A wood burner with a heat transfer add-on is a good idea to combat cold, damp air in the home. With a heat pump, it would be trying to heat the whole home which it was probably not sized to do.

Homes with cold cavity walls require a certain type of ventilation system that monitors moisture throughout the house. If a standard system is installed then cold, damp air is drawn up the cavity wall from under the house into the roof space and distributed throughout the house.

A little chapel with a big heart is set to start a new chapter of its life as a cafe.

The old Seafarers Mission building on Haven Rd will open as ‘Chapel Cafe’ at the end of April, after a two-year restoration process.

Nelson photographer Jose Cano purchased the derelict church and adjacent boatsheds in 2015 with a vision to bring the historic building back to its former glory.

Now the work is complete, Jose has handed the reins to some passionate locals who want to open a cafe with a community focus.

The cafe will be owned by Emily Balaam, who comes from a family of restaurant owners.

Emily says they will be offering great coffee and freshly-made locally-sourced food on site with a seasonal flavour.

But their main focus will be giving back to the community. “All active or retired military, police, fire brigade, civil defence, coast guard and community volunteers, DHB employees and hospice will receive a 10 per cent discount to say 'thank you' for their service,” Emily says.

There will also be a donation box and they will donate 'a dollar to a dollar' for hospice.

The expertise of local trades people and artists have also played a part in the chapel’s lovingly restored interior and exterior that has been influenced by Nelson’s waterfront history.

Adam Styles has reproduced the chapel gates, Pauline English was commissioned to do the leadlight windows and artist Peter Marsden has done the outside artwork.

Emily says it’s a special feeling to be part of the chapel’s rebirth.

“Photos of the chapel go back as far as the early 1800s – it was a haven to those seeking respite from challenging voyages and for parishioners who fell on hard times,” she says.

“It boasts many outstanding features, such as stained-glass windows and the old bell tower that echoed through the port to invite the congregation to enjoy their time of worship and gratitude, and for the younger members of the congregation Sunday school.”

Chapel Cafe will be open seven days a week from 8am – 4.30pm and for private functions.

Later in the year there are plans to open in the evenings with entertainment.

“There will be something for everyone. It will be the place to be for that quick catch-up for coffee and cake for friends and family, light meals or for bike riders or runners who want food-to-go.

Devonshire Teas will be offered soon, as well as a liquor licence,” Emily adds.

But most of all, they want guests to be able to soak up the atmosphere of yesteryear.

“Just imagine if these walls could talk of time past around this busy port district. The chapel, in the true spirit, wants to give her community something back in return,” says Emily.

REVIEW: A magical encounter with Alice Kate Russell It was bright, colourful, quirky and nonsensical – so naturally my sevenyear-old daughter loved every second of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr at the Theatre Royal on Sunday.

The Nelson Youth Theatre’s rendition of the Lewis Carroll classic had both children and adults alike enthralled as Alice journeyed through the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland.

Visually, it was a feast for the eyes and the quirky antics, catchy tunes and impressive costumes kept kids engaged the whole way through.

With a double cast, the audience was treated to the 'Team Sylvie' rendition on Sunday.

Three different sized Alices, played by Sylvie Lloyd, Catherine Courtney and Elise Morton, imaginatively captured the changing sizes of the lead character.

Directed by Richard Carruthers, it featured all the much-loved characters of the story including The White Rabbit, The Mad Hatter, The March Hare, The Caterpillar, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, The Queen of Hearts and very cleverly-portrayed Cheshire Cat. My daughter’s favourite, though, was The Caterpillar, played brilliantly by Megan Pochin, along with two under-

Chamber Music NZ back in Nelson: It’s been more than four years, but finally Chamber Music NZ can once again present music at the Nelson Centre for Musical Arts auditorium. Their first concert will be the internationally-acclaimed Behn Quartet on Tuesday, 24 April, at 7.30pm.

The UK-based group, consisting of members from NZ, Netherlands and the UK, is on a stellar rise in concert halls throughout Europe and won the Orlando International Chamber Music Competition in 2017.

Anzac Day concert: The Nelson Male Voice Choir and Nelson City Brass are holding a joint concert at Nelson Boys College on Anzac Day at 2pm. Nelson Male Voice Choir secretary John Foes-Lamb says it’s the first time they have held a joint concert, and they will be performing a couple of items together, all under the baton of Nigel Weeks. The concert will include traditional Anzac songs and some popular favourites.

The one-hour length is perfect for children, who were able to meet the cast after the show.

Around 48 actors are involved in the production, ranging in age from seven to 18, and it really is impressive what this talented bunch of young actors are capable of.

The 2018 NPD Tasman Trophy kicked off on the weekend with last year’s Nelson Bays champions, Nelson, sending an emphatic statement to the rest of the competition.

In a rematch of the 2017 subunion final, the country’s oldest club opened their season with a comfortable 54-7 victory over Wanderers at Neale Park.

Results generally went as expected in round one, with Waimea Old Boys, Renwick, Kahurangi and Moutere also registering wins.

There were plenty of tries on offer with four teams taking the bonus point from their opening encounters, with only Kahurangi failing to take the maximum with their one-point win over Marist.

Nelson take top spot on the table after round one with a 47-point differential.

Nelson pivot Willy Havili ran the ship superbly for the hosts, while

number 8 Isaiah Miller was also brilliant in the loose, bagging a brace of five pointers.

In the match of the round, defending champions Waimea Old Boys took on Stoke at Jubilee Park in a see-sawing affair.

Waimea playmaker Billy Guyton was making his 50th appearance for the club after a stint with the Blues in last year’s Super Rugby campaign.

Stoke captain Sam Chamberlain was lethal on attack for Stoke, scoring a double, while blindside flanker Jeff Lepa was a constant menace for Waimea.

Former Warrior-turned-Stoke speedster, Tomas Aoake, and Waimea winger Erenimo Tau both dotted down twice in the 38-34 result.

Waimea captain Billy Guyton says it was a good start for his troops.

"We’ve got a bit to work on, but it was good to get the win, Stoke have a really good young team and they took it to us.”

In the weekend's other fixtures, Kahurangi hosted Marist at Sport

Stoke host Nelson while Marist will play Wanderers at Tahuna.

Renwick travel to Blenheim to take on Central while Awatere will open their season against Moutere.

All-weather turf coming to Nayland Locally Owned and Operated

Nayland College students will soon playing rain, hail or shine after the school recieved funding for its new all-weather, multi-sport turf.

The school has been campaigning for a new $300,000 turf since 2014 and now the New Zealand Communities Trust has come on board with a $50,000 grant towards the all-weather surface.

Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson says the hope is the new turf will result in less injuries and more player numbers.

“We put forward an application outlining what we were hoping to achieve with the installation of the turf and we were very fortunate that they saw the community value in having this facility and came on board with the funding.”

Daniel says the school has had a number of injuries on the court and an artificial turf will improve health and safety.

“The facility is not well used because it's substandard and we want to rectify that.”

Daniel’s hope is that the ‘Tiger Turf ’ will help to raise the profile of sport in the school.

He says to increase participation in sport at the school, a modern turf is the way to go.

“When other schools have installed turf, they have seen participation in sport rise significantly.”

The facility will accommodate netball, tennis, basketball, sprinting, futsal and hockey.

“It’s going to be a real community hub,” Daniel says.

The approval of the $300,000 all-weather turf has been four years in the making.

“We identified way back at the start of my first year that this would be something that would be beneficial to the school and community.”

Daniel says the college is still working with other community groups to try get them to come to the party and help fund the project.

“It takes time to make those connections and have those conversations.”

The turf is expected to be completed by August.

Nelson's Tara Hope has paddled her way to a national championship.

Tara was the fastest female at last month’s New Zealand Stand Up Paddle Board Championships, competing against some of the best in the world.

Held at Orewa Beach in Auckland last month, the competition was split into a surf and long-distance race. Tara says the long distance is her fortay, and finished the 18km course second, only behind world champion Penelope Strickland.

"I was pretty pumped with that result,” she says.

Then it was onto the surf-line race which saw paddlers negotiate a 2km long course in the surf.

"Coming from Tahunanui where there isn’t a lot of surf, I’m not very proficient at it but thought I'd give it a go."

The top 30 per cent of racers progressed to the finals.

Tara will paddle at least 10-12km, six days a week.

The new national champion only took the sport up five years ago.

"My husband and I moved here in 2011, and when we would drive along Rocks Rd and see all the people paddle boarding I thought it looked really cool and I wanted to give it a go.”

She says it’s always fun to get out on the water, even when she is trying not to be shark bait.

"I did see a couple of sharks once out on Tahuna Beach, I just kept thinking ‘stay on your board, do not fall off '."

She says she tried not to think about it too much, "otherwise I might have freaked out and fallen in".

Tara is now setting her sights on the World Stand Up Paddle Boarding Championships held in Brazil in November.

New Zealand will have two women representing the country at the championships.

"I’m hoping this result will get me a spot.”

Tough break for footballer Jonty Dine When Jamie Matthews heard the crack, he thought his football shinpad must have snapped - then he saw his foot "flopping around".

Playing for Wakefield’s second XI side in the third division against FC Nelson on Saturday, Jamie went to clear the ball up field with a powerful punt.

As the central defender launched the clearance, an opposition player attempted a shot at goal.

“The attacker went to do a big kick toward goal, he caught me, and my leg just snapped.”

The collision caused Jamie to break both bones in his shin.

“I heard the crack, I thought it might have been my shin pad at first, then came the pain, it was excruciating."

Jamie says he grabbed his knee and as he was falling to the ground, could see his foot "flopping around".

“I knew then it was broken.”

He lay on the grass at Wakefield Domain for half an hour, waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

In a cruel twist, Jamie’s father was refereeing the match and had to watch his son in agony.

“He wasn’t too bad, he was just impressed that I didn’t swear too much,” says Jamie.

In-between the anguish, Jamie says he worried about how his employer would respond. “I just kept thinking, 'my boss is gonna kill me'.”

The mechanic says he will have to take a couple of months off work, at least.

Jamie says he holds no ill will toward the man who caused his injury.

"It was just one of those things.”

Adding insult to injury, the match was restarted after a delay and Wakefield went on to lose 2-0.

Suburbs suffer first loss in Mainland League Nelson Suburbs have suffered their first loss of the season after going down to Coastal Spirit 3-1 on Saturday.

The unbeaten Suburbs travelled to English Park in Christchurch to take on the fourth placed Coastal Spirit in round six of the Mainland Premier League.

Suburbs have been goal scoring machines so far this season with 10 different scorers putting 16 in the back of the net during their first five fixtures. Nelson looked strong early and in-form Ryan Stewart opened the scoring for Suburbs just before half time on the back of a strong run from Alex Ridsdale.

Coastal’s reply was swift as they netted their first in the 44th minute to see the sides go to the break all square at 1-1.

Coastal’s relentless attack in the second half eventually proved too much as the hosts scored two goals in quick succession to take a 3-1 lead in the 83rd minute.

Tennis season wraps up The Nelson Bay’s tennis season wrapped up last week with the annual volunteer and player prize giving.

Eighty six teams took part this year over 11 different grades.

The Tahunanui Stokers (76pts) took out the women’s league only just pipping Hope Green on 75 points.

The Men’s A Grade shield produced a similar wrestle throughout,

with the final win going to Nelson Lawns Overule by one point over Hope Top Guns on 76. The mixed A grade went to Nelson Rebels with Tahunanui Speights Vintage taking second place while mixed B went to Tahunanui Speights IPA with Wakapuaka taking runner up.

Sportsmanship award went to the Hope Angels in the A Grade Women’s league.
