Council manager resigns amid budget troubles Sara Hollyman A senior council manager who came under fire last week for his lack of preparation and disclosure has resigned.

Shane Davies, who has worked for Nelson City Council for 13 years and manages all of its capital projects, resigned from his position but will see out the next few months before starting at another organisation.

It was revealed in last week’s audit risk and finance committee meeting that there was an $8.3 million hole in spending in council’s works and infrastructure budget.

Shane was unable to provide specific projects that contributed to the huge hole other than to say that the Neale Park sewer pump station upgrade was the major contributor with a $1.1 million underspend. Works at the Saltwater Creek bridge and the lack of progress at Saxton Creek also contributed to the underspend.

“The Neale Park pump upgrade is a project that spans the year, the construction hasn’t stopped, it’s just occurred at a different rate than anticipated,” Shane said.

He went on to say that the project is still within budget and within its expected time-frame.

Shopper to win $5000 cash

One Nelson shopper will be $5000 richer next month, thanks to city retailers.

“This competition worked really well last year for the retailers and it was a great working with the local newspaper. The $5000 cash is also a huge incentive, it certainly works to bring people into town in early spring. It’s a kickstart for spring.”

Morrison Square retailers are taking part again this year and its centre manger Angela Leonard says Shop Nelson and Win is a great excuse for people to come into town.

“I feel that this is a great competition that brings people into the centre. With the new season coming through it’s a good opportunity to update their wardrobes, but it’s also good to see that the retailers are behind it.”

Wild weather hits region Severe rain caused chaos yesterday morning as slips and flooding battered the region.

And there is more wild weather on the way today.

A police media spokeswoman said they received multiple reports of flooding around Nelson early yesterday morning. Traffic on Rocks Rd was slowed as contractors worked to clear a small slip and police were called to Chamberlain St, Tahunanui, at 9am to reports of a boulder blocking the southbound lane.

Metservice also issued a severe warning for Nelson west of Motueka and Buller from 9am Monday to 6am Tuesday, and a severe weather watch for Nelson from Motueka eastwards.

A complex low-pressure system with fronts and troughs has moved east onto the country and will be here till Tuesday. Westerly winds are expected

to follow Tuesday evening. The system brings heavy rain with possible thunderstorms and strong north westerly winds.

A Nelson City Council spokesperson recommends that people check that all stormwater drains are clear, drive to the conditions and keep out of the flood waters.

“We advise not to swim at the beach or in the river for 48 hours after rainfall, when the water is discoloured, as surface run-off could be a health risk.”

Rachel didn’t accept that and went on to say that somehow between the end of May and end of June council had gone from being $3.5million under budget to now being far more.

“So what are these projects? I think we need to know. This is absolutely critical to the performance of the organisation.”

Shane responded: “My team manages over 120 projects, I can’t recall all the details of each one today, but I can certainly find that information for you.”

Rachel said she was finding the scenario “somewhat challenging”.

The Neale Park Sewer Pump Station upgrade is a multiyear project that was due to be completed in November but has been pushed to December due to some issues arising.

Council communications manager Paul Shattock says that the issues that have been addressed are “not considered significant”.

Paul says the issues that have been remedied are that concrete was poured into the pump plinths before steel beams for the fixing of the pump pipework were installed so the concrete had to be removed. He says that this detail was not shown on structural drawings, so the subcontractor had already poured the concrete before the main contractor became aware of the foundation beam requirement.

There was also a manufacturing fault with the flanges on the steel pipe supplied and they were sent back to the factory to be fixed.

Hazel tickled Pink after selling scrunchies Sara Hollyman Reporter

Nelson’s newest and possibly youngest entrepreneur will be enjoying the fruits of her labour next month when she watches Pink play live in Dunedin.

Stoke School pupil, eight-yearold Hazel Faragher, has been a long-time fan of Pink and when she heard she was coming to New Zealand, she knew she had to go.

Unaware that you could buy tickets to the show, she called a radio station countless times trying to win the tickets.

Hazel’s mother Hillary says she was devastated when the tickets were given to someone else.

“I suggested that she buy a ticket to the show and she was just like ‘What?! You can buy them?!”

Hillary told Hazel that if she really wanted to go, she would need to figure out a way to get the money she needed.

Hillary told Hazel she would need to raise about $500 to be able to afford the tickets, but due to buying from a reseller they cost $600.

“I kind of liked sewing at that point so I just started making things,” says Hazel.

She says YouTube taught

her how to make skirts and scrunchies, then with the leftover material she made wheat bags.

Hillary estimates Hazel made about 12 skirts, 50 wheatbags and 200 scrunchies, which she then sold at the Sunday market over a four-week period raising a total of $642.

Hazel says she gets the material from the same market.

“We got quite a good deal, five boxes of material for $20.”

Her nana, Marina, seeing that she made $150 in her first market, secretly purchased 2 tickets to the Dunedin show on September 1, in case they sold out.

After raising the money, Hazel still thought the concert would be out of her reach as she didn’t have enough to cover tickets, accommodation and petrol to get there.

Hillary suggested that she ask her nana if she could help, and she agreed to pay half of the costs. Hazel says her nana was the ideal candidate to take to the concert instead of her Mum because “she likes Pink way more than Mum does”.

Hazel wants to continue her market stall after she gets back from Pink but wants to add more things to her range.

Hillary says they will limit it to one market a month.

Nelson City Council staff say they are confident that a $135k ‘biological product’ trial will cure the ongoing weed woes of the Tahunanui Modellers Pond.

The trial, which is expected to last between three and 18 months, was scheduled to start yesterday and involves the use of a nanosilica mixture called Diatomix that generates oxygen and cleans the water. The trial is being implemented with the support

At Thursday’s works and infrastructure meeting, chair and project group member Stuart Walker told councillors that they are “really confident” it will work, with

the approach being effective in similar situations in Australia.

“It’s nanotechnology ... essentially it’s starving the food source of the algae,” he said.

But some questioned the cost of the trial, having last been told the budget for the pond was $65k.

“We haven’t had anything come back to us to increase that budget, so I’m just a bit confused,” said Gaile Noonan. “This is almost twice as much.”

But Alec Louverdis, group manager infrastructure, confirmed that council does have a budget in the current financial year to

cover the cost. “We have faith in the trial and this is a good spend of money,” he said.

Stuart said the original cost was expected to be much higher before being adjusted – with the initial cost being just over $200k.

“We’ve started into it and learned some of the items that were reduced from the 200 figure down to 65k have had to be reinstated, which we weren’t aware of.”

Council CEO Pat Dougherty also defended the cost. “This is an exciting option for us and substantially cheaper than any others, so we are running with the trial.”

NEWS Hill Country Erosion Funding approved: Nelson City Council has been approved funding of $187,200 from the Ministry for Primary Industries Hill Country Erosion Fund. The funding will be used to work with landowners on land management for lifestyle blocks and farms in the Wakapuaka area, build capacity within the council and to support work in rural areas to reduce erosion across steep and erosion-prone land. Council will work in partnership with New Zealand Landcare Trust to deliver the desired outcomes. In particular, the funding will be used towards a better understanding of the issues facing small block owners. This understanding will help towards developing resources that can be used in other regions.

Sport Tasman to manage Saxton Stadium: Nelson’s busiest sports hub will be in safe and familiar hands for the next six years after Sport Tasman renewed its contract to manage Saxton Stadium, last month. Sport Tasman has managed the stadium since October 2009. Facilities general manager Brent Maru says they are focussed on continuing to grow usage, looking at new ways to increase patronage by working closely with the sports codes who hire the venue, plus adding other programmes - such as the older adult walking circuit and various community fitness and exercise classes.

Those lost at sea remembered

Family members lost at sea were remembered on Saturday with a minute’s silence at the annual Blessing of the Fleet.

The blessing was on Saturday led by Archdeacon Andy Joseph, Reverend Jeff Cotton and Father Bill Warwick, who all gave prayers for seafarers

and officially blessed the assembled fishing fleet for the coming season.

The event commemorates those who have lost their lives at sea and blesses the local fishing fleet to have safe passage for the following year.

The blessing is normally held earlier in the year, to coincide with the start of the busy hoki season, but due to damage to

Wakefield Quay from storms earlier in the year, it was delayed until Saturday.

The Motueka Brass Band and The Nelson College for Girls choir entertained the large crowd while vessels of all shapes and sizes gathered in front of the memorial for the blessing. There was a range of demonstrations and stalls showing off local marine pro-

duce. The Rotary club ran their popular fish and chip stand, and fresh fish was filleted and auctioned off.

The highlight was a demonstration by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter which showed the crowd just how quickly it can winch a paramedic onto a fishing boat and bring the injured patient back up to the helicopter.

The Nelson Farmers market will now be able to move to Kirby Lane after council reviewed further information about the proposal.

Last week it was looking like the plans might need to be shelved after Kirby Lane owner Galen King said he was met with excessive red tape to bring the market to Bridge St. Nelson City Council said that the market needed resource consent to operate one day a week. It would have made the project unviable. It was the latest in an ongoing saga over the development, which was initially supposed to be a container mall.

Galen said that he was close to giving up on his vision for a vibrant inner city pocket park after months of being knocked back by what he says is excessive council bureaucracy. However, over the weekend, council staff reviewed the application to move the market. Council made the decision that, providing the stalls aren’t permanently fixed, then a re-

Deputy Mayor Paul Matheson say he’s pleased that, as result of reviewing the application, a decision has been made to allow the market to move to its preferred location without requiring resource consent.

“We understand that bringing the market closer to the city centre will have benefits for everyone

involved.”

Farmers Market manager Miriam Clark says the news is positive.

“We have been very transparent about wanting to move back to

the CBD.” In June, the Nelson Farmers Market made a submission to the council to move from the Maitai Boulevard. They said the location proved to be too exposed to extreme weather and lacked sufficient foot traffic. The market explored its options and considered relocating to Kirby Lane. However, while finalising the lease, council revealed that a resource

consent would be required for a market to be held on one day a week.

Galen said the “one size fits all” resource consent model was “clearly broken”.

He was unable to be reached in New York City, where he is based, but said last week that in other cities around the world, council requirements are adjusted to adapt to the economics of the project and the perceived benefits to the community.

"Meanwhile, we pay rates on the empty block of land as if there was a full building stretching from Bridge St to New St," he said. "The carparks barely cover the rates, let alone bringing any actual income in."

He says the Farmers Market is supposed to be about bringing people together.

"The whole reason I am pursuing the idea of a pocket laneway is to bring people into the CBD, to create a community space.”

Galen says he wants to see Nelson bursting at the seams, with no empty space left. "We need to see people coming into the CBD to work, socialise, shop, eat, drink, play.”

Upper Trafalgar in the running for ‘best street’ Trafalgar St is in the running to be named New Zealand's best.

Finalists for the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards 2018 have just been released and Upper Trafalgar St, ‘A street to go to – not through’ is a finalist for the Best Street Award.

The Best Street Award, sponsored by Resene, recognises and celebrates a street in New Zealand that clearly stands out for its beauty, cleanliness, plantings and sense of community pride.

Upper Trafalgar is part of the main central business district, traditionally a place for shopping and business. From 1 December 2017 to 31 March 2018 it was transformed into a people-place when Council trialled opening this area to foot traffic only over the summer months.

The lines of parked cars were replaced with greenery-filled planter boxes.

Restaurants and cafes provid-

ed couches, picnic tables and umbrellas so that people could relax.

Music from the street piano filled the air and people lingered to enjoy the atmosphere and the beauty of the area.

Due to public popularity the pedestrian zone will be in place again from 8 November 2018 to 30 April 2019.

Mayor Rachel Reese says that the council is delighted to be a finalist. "Feedback from the public on the pedestrian zone was overwhelmingly positive.

Locals and visitors told us that it created a unique and inviting space to socialise, dine and be entertained. It proved to

be a great drawcard, bringing residents and visitors alike to the city centre, and provided another opportunity to showcase what our wonderful city has to offer.”

The winners will be announced, at the Beautiful Awards Gala Dinner, in Auckland, on Friday 26 October.

Council has identified CBD Development as one of its four priorities in the Long Term Plan 2018-28 and is working on a City Centre Programme Plan for focus areas within the city centre.

Rachel also noted that neighbour Tasman District Council has been selected as a finalist for their work on Queen St. "The fact that two of the three finalists for Best Street Award are from the Top of the South is a credit to our communities who recognise that streets and the areas surrounding them are important for more than just traffic, and that they are also community spaces where people come together.”

Trees and vegetation can interfere with our network and even interrupt electricity supply. That’s why it’s important to manage them so that they don’t get too close to power lines.

Network Tasman’s vegetation team takes a proactive approach by surveying all of our lines on a regular basis. Information from the surveys is stored in a database that includes a full record of the history of each site along with which trees have already had their one free trim allowed under the regulations.

If trees are found to be growing too close to power lines we let the property owner know by sending them what is known as a cut and trim notice (CT Notice) as required by The Electricity (Hazard from Trees) Regulations. Network Tasman issues more than 1500 CT Notices each year.

When our vegetation team is doing their surveying work they also look for high-risk issues posed by trees that could fall onto the lines, such as trees that are diseased, damaged, or have branches splitting out. All of these factors have the potential to damage the network and cause power outages. To help mitigate this risk, we negotiate felling or reducing these trees with the tree owner.

Once all of the notices for an area have been returned and a course of action has been agreed with the property owner, a schedule of tree cutting work is assigned to our vegetation contractor Treescape.

Last year, Treescape trimmed more than 1500 trees and felled more than 2000 trees that were posing a risk to power lines.

Surveying our lines and notifying tree owners in this way has dramatically reduced the number of power outages attributed to line damage caused by trees. Family Jewels wants your records Charles Anderson In celebration of Nelson’s only record store being open for a year, Grant Smithies wants you to dust off your vinyl.

“When we started Family Jewels we had no idea whether there were enough vinyl fanatics in town, but it’s been great.”

The store, which was built out of an old office in the Freehouse, is home to all kinds of rare and popular records. When there was no store, Grant started doing record fairs in the old Freehouse yurt. Now he has a store, it makes sense to keep the tradition going.

“The great thing about record fairs is they are a really wonderful community event,” he says.

"There are always some great finds in amongst it all."

Reuben floating through life Charles Anderson Reuben Riddell has been a school dropout, an army recruit and a personal trainer – but now he is floating through life, literally.

He has just started up the city’s only float centre - Uplift – where people are invited to switch off from the world while they bob atop a layer of water. “Think of it as a physical and mental reset to the system,” he says. “Like, having a full body massage but mentally you feel really clear. Reuben was born and raised in Nelson and went to Nayland College before leaving to work in a factory for a time.

He realised that wasn’t where his passion lay so, after getting his education, he joined the army. But then an accident meant his body wasn’t up to the task.

It works by bombarding the water with salts which increases its density and allows the body to float.

He booked himself into a centre in Auckland and came away feeling like he was on cloud nine.

“I was just beaming. I knew then that this is what I wanted to do.”

There wasn’t anywhere in Nelson but Reuben thinks it’s an ideal place for it – full of creatives, business people and those who are into sport. He says there is something for everyone in their experience.

It has been a journey. He has transformed a building on Rutherford St, which used to be a performing arts school and then a music studio, into his own float centre.

“I took down every wall, bar one. It took a long time and

there were some spanners thrown in the works.”

His business partner dropped out, before another one jumped on board after trying floating herself.

“For every bad thing that’s happened there’s been a good thing. I’m really grateful.”

But the best experience for him is having someone walk in for the first time full of stress and walk away like he did on his own experience – totally floating.

Driver cleared after two-truck crash Kate Russell

The injured driver from a two-truck crash on Tahunanui Drive last week has been discharged from Nelson Hospital.

The accident happened at 4.20am on Thursday morning when a large truck towing two trailers rear-ended a parked truck loaded with batteries for scrap, causing its contents to spill onto the road.

Tahunanui Drive was closed to traffic from 4.30am until 5pm, while crews worked to neutralize the sulfuric acid with alkaline products.

Fire and Emergency were called to extract the female driver, who was taken to Nelson

Hospital. She was discharged on Friday.

Nelson City Council was also called to the scene to assess the acid that was spilled into the stormwater system.

The section of stormwater system which contained the acid was isolated so that it could not discharge into our waterways or marine area. It was then treated and pumped to the wastewater system.

The Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Team are still investigating the crash.

Kate Russell A new method of mail delivery could soon be coming to Nelson letterboxes.

NZ Post wants to trial Paxters in the region, an eco-friendly electric delivery vehicle which will enable posties to combine the delivery of parcels and mail in residential areas.

The trial is still subject to final approval from Nelson City Council.

Capable of speeds of up to 45km/h, The Norwegian-made Paxter runs off an electric battery, lasting 70 - 90km.

They can carry loads of up to 200kg but are still small enough to be used on the footpath.

They have already been successful trialled in Taranaki, Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton.

If approved in Nelson, they will be operated on selected roads for 24 months.

There would be no direct costs involved for council.

Deputy mayor Paul Matheson said he has seen first-hand how well they work.

Your Voice Heat of Nelson stops beating?

Some of us tried really hard to get the Montgomery Square project going again but Reese and Matheson were actively opposed (in fact, I think my notice of motion to get it going again still stands). The destination playground that I pushed hard to include in the Rutherford Park plan has been removed by Reese. Church Lane has now officially ground to a halt under Reese. When are people going to wake up and realise that her's is a leadership not only devoid of vision, but actively opposed to progress. Kerry Marshall swept into power on a very robust progressive ticket after years of inaction from Paul Matheson. Rachel Reese was part of that progressive change - she is now completely at the other end of the spectrum and has the very person who represented a lack of progress as her deputy. This does not demonstrate any ‘ability’ on her part to

work with others, it demonstrates a mindset that places more importance on political positioning than achieving ’real’ change in our city. Heart of Nelson Strategy hasn’t gone away- the willingness to put it into place has been single-handedly destroyed in the last five years. Pete Rainey And let us not forget two critically important anchor tenants for the CBD which were also stopped. 1) the performing arts centre, and 2) the revitalised Farmers shopping centre complex in Whakatu Square. What a different CBD we would have now if all these strategies and plans that were done, approved, and paid for, got off the ground. Aldo Miccio Kids inspire flag project Awesome! Hang them up at Christmas time as well.

Much more attractive than what has been hanging around town as decorations. Make our children proud of our town.

We visit the hospital weekly with a frail child and parking is a total nightmare. Every time. I always feel for the older generation, they sometimes park way down back and walk for their appointments.

The fact that he has required every one of his nine MPs to sign a contract requiring them to personally pay $300,000 if they fall out with NZ First is an affront to democracy. It means that if anyone of these MPs disagree with Winston, he effectively has the power to financially ruin them.

I found out about these contracts from a concerned NZ First member the weekend before last. I didn’t believe it at first.

I was aghast when I acquired the documented proof. Winston tried very trick in the book to

block me exposing these dirty deeds in Parliament.

These contracts would be illegal in any other workplace. People may get a redundancy payment or exit package if they fall out with their employer but the idea that have to pay a huge sum the other way is obscene.

It is indentured labour and allows abuse and bullying. The unions and Labour Party would be crying foul were it not that Winston put them into power.

Parliament is no average workplace. It is where our laws are made and where decisions are made over billions of dollars of public money. The constitutions

of most developed countries state that MPs must be representative of the whole people and not be bound by any orders, instructions or contracts but act in good conscience for the public interest.

These constitutional rules are there for good reason. There were times when MPs, Mayors and Councillors were controlled by land barons and rich paymasters. A modern democracy requires that elected officials are not bound by some backroom contract or personal financial interest but do what they believe is genuinely right.

Bowel cancer programme arrives in Nelson Sara Hollyman Nelson’s high rate of bowel cancer is set to get a helping hand with the introduction of the National Bowel Screening Programme.

Health Minister Dr David Clark says that the Nelson Marlborough region has the fourth highest rate of bowel cancer in New Zealand.

"Having good local participation in the programme is our best opportunity for reducing the harm from this disease.”

David says that 30,000 people in the region, aged between 60 and 74, will join the national programme over the next two years with the first invitation letters sent out last week.

"We know the screening test will save lives and I encourage people to take up the opportunity to get screened. The free test could detect problems early and improve your chances of successful treatment.

"Once the National Bowel Screening Programme is fully implemented, it is estimated that as many as 500-700 cancers each year will be detected early.

Nelson Marlborough Health general manager of clinical services Lexie O’Shea says that with such a high rate of bowel cancer, the introduction of the programme is particularly important for us.

"It is especially important for

Maori people, because while Maori people have lower rates of bowel cancer, they are more likely to die of bowel cancer than nonMaori.

"This is often because they are diagnosed with bowel cancer at

a more advanced stage than nonMaori, so we are asking people to encourage their whanau – their matua and kaumatua – to do the test when it comes to them in the post."

Nelson Marlborough DHB is the

sixth health board to introduce the National Bowel Screening Programme and the second in the South Island.

Nationwide, more than a quarter of a million eligible people are now being offered free bowel screening.

"I would like to recognise the hard work done by the DHB to get us to this point.

"The message I frequently hear is that it is vitally important that we get this right.

"That’s why it was so valuable to have had the programme recently endorsed by the independent review set up by Government following some concerns raised about the programme.

"I am reassured that local people taking part in the bowel screening programme will benefit from the series of recommendations from the independent review which will guide the continued development of the national programme."

David says that people around the region will begin to see the benefit of the programme progressively.

The skills of NMIT’s hairdressing students were on the chopping block yesterday with their annual hairdressing competitions.

The competitions give the 30 year one and two students an opportunity to expand their skill set and show them off to a crowd.

This year’s challenge was for the aspiring hairdressers to reveal their inner “warrior goddess”.

Hairdressing tutor Zaley Gill says that there are always surprises in the styles that the students, who range in age from 18 to 50, produce.

“I know some students are taking inspiration from Viking, ancient Indian and Aztec imagery.”

The hair dos were judged by four

industry professionals from salons across the region.

The first-year students had 30 minutes to complete their hairstyles on pre-prepped (curled, set or straightened) hair.

Zaley says it’s such a great sense of achievement for them once they have finished.

“When they go out on the floor they are so nervous, but I told them the first five minutes of the competition are the worst.

“After that, they forget that people are around and just get into their zone.”

She says the students are pushing themselves and there would be a big sense of achievement once the judging is over.

“They gain so much more confidence from stepping out of their comfort zone.”

Sleeping Beauty awakens at Theatre Royal Kate Russell An ageless story of love and magic is set to light up the Theatre Royal stage this week.

Nelson Academy of Dance is performing Sleeping Beauty the Ballet, for four shows only, starting on Thursday night.

It will be director Gillian Francis’ third time staging the classic fairy-tale since opening her academy in 1977.

“The last time we did it was in 2004 - that was before the Theatre Royal was renovated,” she says.

Sleeping Beauty was first presented at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1890 and remains one of the best examples of narrative ballet theatre.

Set to the music of Tchaikovsky, it tells the story of Princess Aurora who falls prey to the spell of an evil fairy, which only a kiss from a handsome prince will break.

There will be 100 dance student and actors in this authentic, full-length ballet, ranging in age from five to 60-years-old.

Gillian’s dance students will be the featured performers, alongside American dancer, Jordan Nelson.

Jordan has been a professional ballet dancer with Columbia City Ballet, Madison Ballet, Elements Contemporary Ballet, and Ballet Chicago.

Gillian says she started planning for the show back in January.

“We have made some stunning costumes, especially for the show. Some of the mothers

have been sewing for weeks.”

Sleeping Beauty is just over two hours long, with three intervals.

“People can also expect to see some beautiful choreography, costuming, backdrops, lighting and sound. It’s an all-round show for everyone.”

Sleeping Beauty is on at Theatre Royal from August 23 to 25 at 7pm with a matinee performance on August 25 at 1.30pm.

Heritage photography rediscovered Nelson Provincial Museum’s newest exhibition ‘A Century of Saying Cheese’ celebrates the quirky, endearing and unexpected images from the Museum's vast Glass Plate Photography Collection.

This entirely self-developed show is based on the museum’s recently digitised collection of 150,000 glass plate photographs, which recently received a UNESCO honour.

Mako off to stunning start Jonty Dine and Peter Jones The Tasman Mako kicked of its Mitre 10 Cup campaign on Friday night in stunning style, knocking off the defending champions Canterbury 25-17 at Lansdowne Park.

The Mako avenged their loss to the red and blacks in the 2017 premiership final, dominating the visitors upfront and showcasing their blockbuster backline to declare themselves serious title contenders.

Tasman ran in three tries at Lansdowne Park, at one stage leading 25-3 before a late comeback flattered the score-line for the Cantabs.

Mako debutant Solomon Alaimalo showed why his signature was so sought after, producing a brilliant display on the left wing, while veteran Wyatt Crockett was another stand-out in his first appearance for the franchise.

However, MacDonald described the concession of points late in the piece as "a good lesson”.

"Although there were a lot of things we did very well, like our exiting, our decision-making on attack and we created a lot of turnovers, it just shows, you miss one lineout five metres out and all of a sudden two tries are conceded. It could have been 30-3 if they had executed … that’s the ruthlessness we have to bring to our game.”

The Mako return to Blenheim for their second game, a clash with championship side Southland, on Sunday, kick off 2:35pm.

Jonty Dine The Mainland Tactix kicked off its Super Club campaign with a comfortable 86-50 victory over the Singapore Sneakers at the Trafalgar Centre on Sunday night.

Earlier in the day, New South Wales and the Central Pulse both registered wins over

Marama Vou and the Scotland Sirens respectively.

The biggest shock of the day was saved till last though as the Gauteng Jaguars from South Africa stunned the Steel 61-65.

RUGBY: Nelson College saw off a stunning comeback by Marlborough Boys College on Saturday to register a thrilling 36-35 victory and book their place in the UC Championship plate final. The hosts avenged the loss to their Top of the South neighbours earlier in the season, a hattrick to wing Ben Faingaanuku within the first fifteen minutes looking to have ended the contest early as Nelson raced to a 24-0 lead. However, MBC stormed back in the second half to almost steal it at the death.

Next week College will host Shirley Boys in the plate final after they pipped Lincoln Combined 20-17 in the other semi.

BRIDGE: John Mitchell and Helen Barker, members of the Nelson Bridge Club, won the Nelson Intermediate Pairs tournament on Saturday. Mitchell and Barker gained an average score of 61.72 percent over the two sessions of play to edge out fellow Nelson players Allan Mulligan and Kathy Mardon on 60.72.

The tournament attracted 80 players from throughout the Top of the South (TOPS) region.

Rivalry to decide netball champions Jonty Dine Reporter

The champions of Nelson netball will be decided this Sunday afternoon.

Jacks OPD and Prices Pharmacy will reignite their storied rivalry when they meet in the 2018 Nelson premier netball final at Saxton Stadium.

Prices Pharmacy took full advantage of their play-off lifeline, defeating Stoke NBS on Saturday to earn their spot in the premier final.

Prices defeated Stoke 63-52 to set up a rematch of their thrilling one-point loss to Jacks in the first semi-final last Thursday night.

Jacks captain Jess Drummond says her side will need to be on top of their game if the are to repeat their 2017 triumph.

“I watched that semi, Prices were on form and will no doubt be like that against us.”

Jacks star shooter Rayna Olsen is in doubt for the final

after limping off in the semi with a calf complaint.

“I definitely know there will be some nerves, especially for the girls who have some injury niggles.”'

Should Rayna be ruled out, Ani Waitai will make just her second premier appearance in 2018.

Ani was called into the shooters circle in extra time during the semi-final, nailing all six of her attempts The standout centre says while she expects another close encounter, she hopes to get the job done in regulation time.

“I am predicting a hardfought game with a high chance of it being very close, let’s just hope it’s not overtime close though!”

Jess says Jacks will need to stick to the game plan and do what they do best, contesting the whole 60 minutes with no lull.

“Our goal is to be back to back champs, at the end of the day it will be who performs the best on Sunday af-

ternoon that will secure that win, bring it on!”

Prices captain Shar Lowe says she knows they will need to play an exceptional game to be able to come away with the win.

“We know we’re capable of this so are excited to be playing Jacks who are in form at the moment.”

Shar says the game will be won by the team who makes the least number of errors.

This proved the difference in their nail biting 49-48 extra time loss in the semi-final.

She says Prices will have a fully fit squad to choose from, provided there are no flight delays from Christchurch to Nelson.

Their defensive duo of Holly Chandler and Dayna Whiting will be travelling back from the Garden City on Sunday after they compete at the Club Volleyball Nationals.

The name Graeme Lowans has been synonymous with Nelson sport for more than half a century, and the late Suburbs stalwart’s legacy is set to last a little longer.

Graeme passed away in 2014 and his wife Marilynne Lowans wanted to honour his memory and continue the support of the Suburbs club her husband loved so dearly.

Thanks to a donation from the Lowans family, the Nelson Suburbs female football sides have been kitted out with new uniforms.

Daughter Erica Sims says the kits are a great way to remember her father and

his contributions to the club.

“Mum wanted to make a donation in his memory.

Dad was really involved with and certainly worked hard for the club as chairperson, coach, player, referee and past president.”

A man of many hats, Graeme also helped fundraise for the original clubrooms when the side was still based at Victory Square.

The family still remain heavily involved with the club.

Granddaughter Hayley Sim, who is currently in the Suburbs first division side, has been at the club since she was seven-years-old.

Erica is on the club committee and the family are

seen regularly at Saxton, supporting the senior side.

“We are pretty devoted,” Erica says.

She remembers the days on the side-line with the kids in the pushchair watching the football.

Hayley says she has an enormous sense of pride having her grandfather's name on her uniform.

It caries on that legacy that Graeme started such a long time ago.

“I nearly cried when I heard his name was going to be on the kit.”

Nelson hockey star Tarn Richards is setting his sights on the Black Sticks.

The 16-year-old striker says donning the silver fern has been a dream of his since he first picked up a hockey stick.

Tarn recently returned from the New Zealand Provincial Hockey championships in Dunedin with the winning U18 Capital side.

Capital defeated Auckland in the grand final who handed Capital its only loss of the tournament earlier in the week.

Capital’s first match ended in a 3-3 draw against Southern with Capital winning the shoot-out 4-2 to take the extra point.

They then beat Midlands 3-0 before their third game against Canterbury produced ten goals, with Capital scoring six against the 2017 champions.

They then went into the topfour pool where they found Auckland just too good and went down 2-1 Needing to beat North Harbour to make the final, Capital scored the winner from a penalty corner with just two minutes left for a 2-1 win after Tarn netted the
