Time to work together Neville Male President As you are all aware Nelson Grey Power has the largest membership of all Grey Power associations in New Zealand and because of that we are constantly dealing with the many issues that are being faced by the older population in our region. It has been and continues to be of great concern to me as your president that little has been done over recent years to develop any credible and workable strategies to address the changing world that our elderly now live in.

There has been much publicity over the past two months about the plight

of the elderly including a damning United Nations report confirming that governments worldwide are not doing enough for their elderly and this is being put down to it being “too complicated and costly”. Perhaps the UN report is now having some positive effect as closer to home the New Zealand government on October 1 launched the ‘Older New Zealanders: Healthy Independent Connected and Respected’ document which summarises what is going on across government agencies and reaffirms the commitment to the Positive Ageing Strategy, which was first Continued on page 3.

It’s been all go!

Neville Male President Over the past three months your association has probably been the busiest it has been for a very long time.

With the local body elections dominating much of our time together with the launch of the Grey Power Electricity scheme your executive, our part time staff and office volunteers have been fully committed. Part of the reason for being so busy is that nearly 100 new members have signed up to gain the benefits of the Grey Power Electricity scheme which of course is what we were hoping for.

There is further information about this scheme on page 8 of this magazine. The results of the election will I

hope; pave a new way forward for the elderly of our region.

Most of the candidates who took part in our ‘Meet the Candidates’ forums were very supportive about the five main issues they were asked to respond to and overwhelmingly nearly all those standing for the Nelson City Council are in favour of revoking the current draconian regulations concerning the use of wood burners. Mayor Rachel Reese has been particularly supportive in this regard. One of our current executive committee members Gaile Noonan is congratulated on her election

to Council as is former vice president Councillor Eric Davy.

A number of other matters have been at the forefront over the past three months and most of you will be aware that I tendered my resignation from the Kiwi Energy Trust primarily because there had been no progress made in getting the Trust up and running. As it transpired soon after, Grey Power Electricity was launched and there would have been a conflict of interest if I had stayed on as a trustee of Kiwi Energy. I can only hope that those members who had indicated an interest in the Kiwi Energy Trust have

since found some savings benefit through the Grey Power Electricity scheme.

The recent past has also been full on in our dealings with the NZ Grey Power Federation where a number of our concerns needed to be addressed. A meeting was held in Nelson with the president and vice president in October and progress has been made.

We have also been working with the Federation in respect of the next advocacy visit to Parliament and have provided input to the ongoing national issues relating to superannuation, housing and health.

Finally may I wish you all a safe, relaxed and very enjoyable Christmas and New Year.

Time to work together

At the same time research undertaken by the Ministry of Social Development has been released in a report entitled ‘The Business of Ageing’ and this talks about the growing economic and social benefits that older people bring to their families, communities and the economy. One can only hope that the Minister of Senior Citizens and the Minister of Social Development are

comparing notes and talking about how they can work together on older person issues. It is essential that they are seen to be singing from the same song sheet on this one.

When elected as president a year ago I stated that Nelson Grey Power had the ability and the opportunity to take a lead in developing a community wide strategy for the ageing population of Nelson and Tasman. This will be a priority for your executive committee over the next 12 months. In our region

Office News Thanks need to go to all of our volunteers who have worked hard helping us both in the office and getting this magazine out to you. We are pleased to have some new volunteers on board to spread the load so thank you to you all. It is with great sadness that we acknowledge Margaret Kingsford one of our office volunteers, who passed away earlier this year. She was great to have around and always made us laugh, she will be missed. We would also like to mention Val Harrison who has finished helping us in the office. Lessons learnt Monthly Comment

Neville Male President When we set out to host ‘Meet the Candidates’ forums we had no idea that it would become front page news as the Nelson Mail decided to take us to task for the manner in which the Nelson City candidate’s forum was conducted.

With the benefit of hindsight, although we were trying to cater for the needs of our members are far as limiting the time of that forum was concerned and were quite within our rights to do so, the decision to specify the numbers of candidates attending, which was entirely mine, was wrong and I regret that. As it turned out it was actually a successful event on the night and I

was pleased to see how well the later Tasman ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum went.

No bad publicity and a good spirit prevailed among candidates. However, looking back this attempt by Nelson Grey Power to provide for our members to get to know more about the people standing for both Councils proved to be too difficult. We won’t be doing it again. I apologise to any of our members who felt concerned about the bad publicity which unfortunately was compounded by a biased and negative media reporting of events.

It is interesting to note that at the last local body election, with about a 48% voter turnout, over 60% of voters were in the older age group.

Website Update A complete review of our website is currently being undertaken with the purpose of ensuring that the new website will provide another communication vehicle and information platform for our members on all key issues we are dealing with.

Our weekly NewsFlash, which is available to members who have sup-

plied their email address, has been well received by about 65% of our members and the new website will sit nicely alongside that.

It will also provide a link to a number of other websites that will be of interest to our members.

The new website should be up and running by the end of this month.

Successful outcome for residents Residents of Waimea Village may now see an end to the impasse between the residents and the owners. The hard work put in by our Grey Power executive member Pam Coltman - a registered legal

executive and Kit Maling - a former TDC Councillor, along with others, has given the residents hope for their future. By giving each resident owner the opportunity to purchase a 172nd share of the village

at a cost of approx. $8200, they will be assured of a say in the future of the village.

Those who do not wish to purchase or cannot afford to do so can lease their land as they do now but their monthly

levies will be higher as the cost of their shares has been borrowed from the Nelson Building Society who have agreed to provide finance to make the purchase possible.

This opportunity will allow the resi-

dents to get back to living in peace again. Over 72% of the residents have agreed to buy a share for the deal to go ahead. It is likely house prices in the village will increase as a result of this agreement.

Bypass noise Living Wills annoys Bob Hancock Grey Power Executive More than passing discontent, together with meetings called on the matter, has drawn our attention to unwanted road surface noise generated from the Stoke bypass (Whakatu Drive), especially those whose homes are mere metres from the highway.

Whilst many homes have noise insulation, summer indoor ventilation needs and outdoor living, combined with predominant summer northerly sea breezes, make an unreasonable intrusion from the constant roar of tyre contact on the coarse chip surface to a significant number of Stoke homes.

Despite assurances given at the time of construction by the authorities concerned, “that hot mix type noise limiting surfaces were intended, at the time

of construction”, it never happened. In fact the highway has been since resealed past residential areas with annoying coarse chip seal, seemingly worse than ever.

Curiously, since then elaborate highways north of Auckland and Christchurch have utilized noise limiting surfaces, also the section of the bypass adjacent to Cawthron Cresent.

Traffic volumes are ever increasing, it’s time to have some answers for our Nelson environment and the future.

From a Grey Power member “A few years ago we read in Grey Power about a Living Will, the first line of the information reads: ‘This document declares my wishes to my physician, any medical practitioner or hospital in the care of which I am placed, my family, my solicitor, and clergy.’

We have used it when we have had to have an operation to enable the hospital staff to know our personal wishes just in case things

didn’t turn out as expected.

When talking to a solicitor, he asked me if we carried the Living Will around with us. When I said no he pointed out that if we were in an accident and rushed to hospital that no one would know at the time what our wishes were.

We thought his point was very valid and have now written on our Grey Power card that we have a Living Will and the name of the Doctor it is held with.”

Referendum on Asset Sales Miles Jackson Grey Power NZ Federation Inc. Representative ‘Keep our Assets” Last year Grey Power New Zealand Federation Inc. and the New Zealand Students Association (NZSA), along with other groups set up the “Keep Our Assets” petition which garnered almost 330,000 kiwi signatures.

This was enough to trigger a referendum.

The postal vote on the question “Do you support the government selling up to 49% of Meridian Energy, Mighty River Power, Genesis Power, Solid Energy and Air New Zealand?” is currently taking place and will continue

until December 13 this year.

The Electoral Commission wants to make it easy for people to take part.“It’s important that New Zealanders know that a referendum is being held and how to take part,” says Robert Peden, chief electoral officer. “Look out for information in your letterbox – it will tell you more about what to expect. People also need to make sure that they are enrolled and that their details are up to date, as only those correctly enrolled will receive their voting papers.

“Check your details now – it’s easy. You can do it online or at your local Post

Shop.”

Enrolment forms are also available from the elections website, www.elections.org.nz, any Post Shop, free-phone 0800 36 76 56 or by free-texting your name and address to 3676.

Voting papers will be sent to all correctly enrolled voters at the start of the voting period. And people need to tick yes or no in response to the referendum question before returning the voting paper in the envelope provided.

People should post their voting papers back no later than Thursday December 12 to be sure they are returned on time.

Do you ever wonder “Who’d know about that?”

Citizens Advice Bureau Nelson Tasman’s friendly volunteers enjoy helping people find answers to anything at all. Often callers have no idea where to start, so we help them clarify the issue, suggest alternatives, or refer them to places offering specialist help. We have information on consumer rights, employment, transport, recreation, housing, relationships, health, finances, and more. And our service is free.

People usually contact us when things go wrong, but we much prefer sharing information to prevent problems arising. For example, check with us to see if that tempting phone call saying you’ve come into money is a scam, or to find out your rights when an unexpected tradesman visits and offers to fix your driveway or repaint your roof. Remember, not everyone out there

is genuine, and you should never pay cash ‘up front’ no matter how tempting the deal.

As the holidays approach, consider how to keep your property safe. Burglars like easy, tempting pickings, avoiding places where they can be easily seen.

Don’t help them by leaving out tools or ladders. And don’t tell the world you’re away on your Facebook page, your answer phone or your email auto reply.

Check your insurance. Is it current? Read the small print. Are you required to advise them if you’re away for an extended period?

Or that you have a housesitter?

Make some simple arrangements so it’s not obvious your home is empty. Give

a key and your holiday contact details to someone you trust and ask them to make regular checks.

Organise someone to put some washing on the line every few days, randomly park in your drive, or even mow the lawns when you’re away for a while.

And remember even if you’ve put your mail delivery on hold, junk-mail will continue to accumulate in your letterbox. Get someone to clear it!

And while you’re away, remember opportunistic thefts from cars are common. Relax on your holiday – but don’t relax when it comes to vehicle safety.

Thieves know rental cars are likely to have cameras, laptops, passports or other goodies on board. Avoid leaving documents with

your name and address in the car as thieves may arrange a home visit or steal your identity. Some criminals monitor car parks near tourist attractions, so put your valuables in the boot before you arrive, not after you’ve parked. And never leave your wallet or credit card behind.

At night, park close to a street light in a well-lit, busy street. Parking in view of a steady flow of pedestrians and vehicles reduces the risk of being targeted.

If you’re staying home and see any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, call 111. Prompt reporting to the Police increases their success in solving crimes.

Aged care commissioner needed Grey Power and the New Zealand Aged Care Association (NZACA) are calling on the Government and all political parties to appoint an Aged Care commissioner to help protect the elderly from financial abuse.

The two organisations have today released a discussion document to highlight the issue of financial abuse and spark debate on options to stamp it out.

“The number of cases where elderly people have been financially abused by the very person who is meant to be acting in their best interests is unfortunate. There is no one agency responsible for looking into these cases or with the power to resolve them,” says Roy Reid Grey Power New Zealand Federation

An Aged Care commissioner should have the powers to receive complaints on financial abuse, investigate them, and if required take legal action through the courts.

The NZACA has been working with Grey Power on ways to help protect the elderly.

“With sad regularity my members come to me with situations where they know their residents are being financially abused by the person who holds the Enduring Powers of Attorney. But there is nothing they can do other than raise it with the perpetrator or possibly take it through the courts at great expense in time and money,” said Martin Taylor, NZACA

chief executive.

Financial elder abuse can take many forms. It might be someone having their superannuation stolen or their house being sold with the proceeds being taken by someone with EPOA. Or it could be a lawyer charging high fees to manage someone’s affairs through to having a credit card used without the elderly person’s knowledge.

Each year, Age Concern’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Service (EANPS) receive over 1000 referrals about people who may be facing

elder abuse or neglect.

This is about four referrals every day.

“As the number of elderly people is increasing, the cases of elder abuse will rise. We cannot just sit back and hope the situation will go away, we must do something to protect the most vulnerable elderly people,” says Roy. Both Grey Power and NZACA will be asking all parties to consider establishing an Aged Care commissioner with sufficient powers to address the issue of financial elder abuse.

Deed changes secure postal services New Zealand Post has welcomed the changes to the ‘Deed of Understanding’ announced by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

New Zealand Post Group CEO Brian Roche says the new Deed gives the company the flexibility it needs to be able to continue to provide New Zealanders with a postal service that meets their changing requirements and expectations.

“The flexibility means while New Zealand Post is committed to providing an across the week premium mail service we have room to move in the years ahead on the frequency of standard letter delivery.

“The change in delivery frequency at some point is inevitable given the ongoing and rapid decline in letter mail volumes.

While parcel volumes have increased by nearly 3 million since 2006, over

the same period letter volumes are dropped by 322 million – or 30 percent.

“The changes also recognise that technology such as self-service kiosks will form a significant part of our postal service point network, and a move towards a franchise and hosted business model.

“The previous Deed is 14 years old and is out-ofdate. It constricted New Zealand Post to a business model that would have had dire economic consequences and would have threatened the viability of the postal network.

“The new agreement preserves a postal network for New Zealanders and takes account of the differing needs between rural and urban delivery.

“The document is also a reflection of the quality submissions received from rural organisations including Federated Farmers and Rural Women New Zealand, the business sector,

As prescribed in the Deed, there will be no changes to delivery frequency of

standard letter mail before mid 2015. Mr Roche stressed New Zealand Post would work closely with large sending customers and also keep consumers informed well ahead of any operational changes.

Summary Under the 1998 Deed of Understanding the Postal Delivery Service for standard letter mail was six days a week delivery to more than 95% of delivery points.

Under the 2013 Deed of Understanding the Postal Delivery Service, as from July 1 2015 it will be no less than three days per week to 99.88% of delivery points. There will be five days per week delivery to Rural Delivery points, except for those Rural Delivery points which had lower frequency as at June 30 2013.

Under the current New

Zealand Post Service Network, there are at least 880 postal outlets and post centres. Within the network of postal outlets, no fewer than 240 postal outlets provide postal services plus agency and/or other services.

Under the new Deed, there will be a network of at least 880 service points at which consumers can purchase basic postal services. At least 240 of those will have personal assistance available to consumers for the purchase of additional postal services and have bill payment services.

Population aged 65+ doubles

New Zealand’s ageing population was reaffirmed in August when it was confirmed the population aged 65 and over has doubled since the early 1980s to reach 635,200. The population aged over 65 years now makes up 14 percent of the population.

The population aged 65 and over has risen by 48,200 over the last two years as baby boomers (those born

from 1946 to 1965) start to move into the over 65 age group. “The first of the baby boomers turned 65 in 2011 and we will see this group leading continued growth in our older age groups in the years to come,” says population statistics manager Andrea Blackburn of Statistics New Zealand.

This age bracket of the population is expected to double again by 2040.

UN report confirms issues neglected A recent United Nations report confirms that most countries are not working hard enough to cope with their population ageing faster than ever before.

The fact that people are living longer is putting a heavy strain on providing healthcare and services in an age friendly environment and in many countries, elderly are seen as an

economic burden.

The UN report suggests that ageing is becoming a very complex picture and because many of the issues are seen as highly complicated many governments are resisting tackling the issues faced by the elderly.

The report also says by the year 2050 people over the age of 60 will outnumber children aged under 15.

Free hearing aid & ear checks Hearing Association Nelson has been funded by Nelson Bays Community Foundation to hold free clinics at Presbyterian Support rooms, 360 Annesbrooke Drive, for one year. They will be held the fourth Friday of every month and any member of the public is welcome to get their hearing aids cleaned and dried in theUltravac, get checked for ear wax through a viewing screen, borrow assistive listening devices and have questions answered about any hearing issues.

Hearing Nelson is an independent charity. Our primary aim is Hearing Awareness and we offer informative talks to any group or organisation in the Nelson Tasman region.

Hearing Awareness is broken down into three categories. The first of these is Understanding Hearing Loss. 33% of people over 60 have a hearing loss so we encourage annual hearing tests in your “warrant of fitness” checks. Hearing aids may be expensive but they are all about quality of life and there is financial assistance available. Studies reveal strong links between dementia and untreated hearing loss. Researchers believe it could be that age-related hearing loss and progressive cognitive impairment are caused by a common neuropathological process; or that hearing loss causes social isolation, reduction of sensory stimulation and neuro-

logical stress leading to poor memory. Either way, wearing your hearing aids regularly will delay the process. Hearing Nelson is here to help: with the rehabilitation period – getting used to your new hearing aids isn’t easy; with the maintenance of your hearing aids to prolong their life and ensure they amplify crisply and clearly; and with demonstrations of telephones and the CapTel service.

The second category of Hearing Awareness is Communication Protocols with hearing impaired people. Every sixth person you encounter will have a hearing loss so these protocols are very important if you wish to hold effective conversations

Not a cranky old man When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in an Australian country town, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value.

Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.

One nurse took her copy to Melbourne. The old man’s sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas editions of mag-

azines around the country and appearing in magazines for the Mental Health organisation. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent poem.

This old man, with nothing left to give to the world is now the author of this ‘anonymous’ poem that can be found all across the internet.

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within. We will all one day be there too.

What do you see nurses? What do you see?

What are you thinking? When you’re looking at me?

A cranky old man, who is not very wise, uncertain of habit, with far away eyes?

Who dribbles his food and makes no reply, when you say in a loud voice, ‘I do wish you’d try’.

Who seems not to notice the things that you do and forever is losing a sock or shoe.

Who, resisting or not lets you do as you will, with bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.

Is that what you’re thinking? Is that what you see? Then open your eyes nurse, you’re not looking at me.

I’ll tell you who I am as I sit here so still, as I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will.

I’m a small child of ten with a father and mother, brothers and sisters, who love one another. A boy of 16 with wings on his feet, who is dreaming that soon, a lover he’ll meet.

A groom soon at 20, my heart gives a leap. Remembering, the vows that I promised to keep.

At 25, now I have young of my own, who need me to guide them and a secure happy home.

A man of 30, my young have grown fast, bound to each other with ties that should last.

At 40, my young sons have grown and are gone, but my woman is beside me to see I don’t mourn.

At 50, once more babies play around my knee, again, we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me my wife is now dead. I look at the future and I shudder with dread.

For my young are all rearing young of their own. And I think of the years and the love that I’ve known.

I’m now an old man and nature is cruel. It’s jest to make old age look like a fool.

The body, it crumbles, grace and vigor depart.

There is now a stone where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass a young man still dwells and now and again my battered heart swells. I remember the joys, I remember the pain. And I’m loving and living life over again.

I think of the years, all too few gone too fast and accept the stark fact that nothing can last.

So open your eyes, people, open and see.

Not a cranky old man. Look closer, see me.

Sparkling Berry Fruit Jelly Ingredients • Chill time: 9 hours • 2 x 900g loaf tins (one to be used as a weight) • 350g strawberries, hulled and halved • 225g fresh raspberries • 200g fresh blueberries • 6 leaves gelatin (equals 3 tsp powdered) • 50g castor sugar • 425ml sparkling rose wine • 1 Tbsp fresh lime juice Directions Line one loaf tin with plastic wrap. Mix fruits gently and pour into lined loaf tin. Soak gelatin sheets in water until soft.

Heat half the wine until it begins to simmer and then whisk sugar into it.

Squeeze out gelatin and whisk into the wine mix until dissolved.

Add remaining wine and lime juice. Pour liquid into a jug and cool.

Meanwhile, lay a sheet of plastic wrap over the tin,

place the other loaf tin directly on top, then weigh it down with heavy cans and refrigerate for one hour until set.

Reheat remaining 150ml wine mixture and pour over surface of jelly.

Cover with wrap and refrigerate overnight until set firm.

Turn out by dipping tin in hot water and inverting over a plate. Cut into slices with a knife dipped into hot water.
