Exciting New Era Begins Continued from page 1 As your new president I have six key objectives and long term vision and mission for NGP; 1. Ensure that with a good strong executive committee we will be a stronger voice regarding issues and concerns faced buy our members. Only then can we grow the membership. 2. Make sure we consult with the members more often so they have input to decision making. 3. Negotiate better discounts with our handbook suppliers. Times are tough and they will get tougher. 4. Promote and work with other older persons organizations in our area. I want to see a forum established that brings all these organizations together say twice a year to work together and become βone voiceβ on major issues affecting our older population. 5. Be more active in working in a positive way with our two local bodies and our MPs. This process has
already begun. 6. To see NGP become an organisation that, because of the pool of vast knowledge and experience within its membership, can help the community in a variety of ways. I told those that attended the special general meeting that I want to see NGP become a much more valuable community organization that can harness its talents knowledge and experience for the good of the community at large. It is an under-utilized resource that could add much value to the lives of many people in our community. I also said at the SGM that I was working on a Strategic Plan for NGP and I will continue to do this and will bring this back to you all for input once the first draft is completed. There have been 10 portfolios allocated to executive committee members to manage. These portfolios of re-

Marsden House in Nile St was built with a Β£6000 bequest from Miss Frances Marsden of Isel and was opened as the Cathedral Parish Centre in 1923 by her brother James Marsden. Built of Nelson Pottery bricks, it was in danger of being demolished as an earthquake risk. When the Day family bought it in 1968 for their Funeral Home they reinforced the structure to meet earthquake specifications. One of Nelsonβs few historic brick buildings has been preserved until this day. For more Snippets of History contact Marsden House. Sinking lid for pokies?
Nelson City Council recently spent time and money inviting submissions on the Gaming Policy Review. However in mid October this policy was withdrawn because of procedural issues. The policy is likely to be readvertised for consultation in the New Year and Grey Power members should be aware of the implications of the proposed policy and look to get involved in the submission process. The change to policy includes a sinking lid on the
number of pokie machines allowed in the City. This means that Council would not issue new consents for gaming venues or machines. Council quotes the βreason for introducing a sinking lid is to minimise the potential for problem gambling, by progressively reducing the opportunities for gambling on pokies in Nelson through attrition.β Hospitality New Zealand branch members are against this proposed policy and would look for Grey Power Members support in fighting this due to the fol-
lowing facts: β’ Numbers of pokie machines are falling anyhow β why do we need a policy? (In 2004 there were 328 machines, in 2007 301 machines and in 2010 there were 285. Today there are currently 239 machines in the area (but consents for 266). β’ The Gaming review should also be delayed until Council reviews their Alcohol policy following potential changes to the Alcohol Reform Bill. The ARB is currently progressing through parliament. Why not wait and review gaming policy for pokie machines - which are housed by licensed premises - at the same time in a few months? Doesnβt that make sense? So why should Grey Power Members care? Some
little known facts on gaming first: 1. For every $100 put into a pokie machine: β’ $90 is returned to the players β’ $1.60 is allocated to cover venue expenses β’ $2.40 is used to cover the Trustβs admin costs β’ $2.25 goes to central government β’ $3.75 is returned to the community in the form of grants That said if the pokie machine is in a club the government lets the clubs keep this money! In 2005 this was quoted by a DIA report βwhere to the profits go?β as $42 million spent on their own operations and just $1.3 million allocated out! 2. Whilst 95% of New Zealanders gamble in some form or another, problem
Grey Power Nelson gambling equates to only 1-2% of the population (dependent on what stats you look at.) The vast majority of gaming machine players do so within their own means for e nt e r t ai n ment and enjoyment. 3. Figures from the Ministry of Health and Department of Internal Affairs demonstrate that there is no correlation to the number of gaming machines in a community to the number of problem gamblers. 4. The reduction in machine numbers does however reduce the pool of funds available for distribution into the community!

Housing for the Retired George Truman Energy Spokesman Many of my contemporaries find they can manage on National Superannuation provided they are rent free or mortgage free by the time they reach 65 years. How is society to reach this goal for the great majority? The key is a smaller home on a smaller section. We now live in a well-designed two bedroom unit of only 105 square metres (1100sq. ft.) including the built in garage and find it adequate. The garage/laundry is carpeted with a floor covering that can withstand a
wet car. We use this extra room for visiting with grandchildren. I would plea for the two councils to allow more developments like Waimea Village (without its problems) and permit a more flexible approach to minimum front yards, less expensive roading and fencing with useful common areas and long vistas. This would mean smaller individual titles that still qualify for rate rebate. On reaching retirement folk could downsize to such opportunities and live mortgage free for the rest of their lives.

MEET THE VOLUNTEER
Murray Fisher Kim Harding Admin Support Murray has been volunteering in the Grey Power office for nearly 20 years. Murray has worked shifts over this time on every day of the week except Friday on a fortnightly basis. He started as a volunteer after a political meeting before the 1993 election. The office was where the current Stoke community link for seniors is in the Stoke Central Mall which was being built at the time. The office was moved to the back of the H & Jβs building where it was for six or seven years until it was moved to its
current location. Southland is where Murray originated from but started his working life in Canterbury where he worked on a farm. He went back to Southland and worked as a shearer. His mate was going to Nelson for a holiday so Murray decided to go with him. There he met who would be his wife and married in Motueka. A hop garden in Riwaka kept him busy until he moved to Richmond. After an 18 year stint at the old freezing works he left when he turned 60 to receive superannuation. Murray has two daughters that live locally and a son in Auckland.

Local Body Report Errol Millar Local Bodies (NCC) With the election of a new executive, I have retained the responsibility for Local Bodies specifically assigned to the Nelson City Council. New executive member Pam Coltman has offered to look after local body matters relating to the Tasman District Council. Both mayors have taken umbrage with Nelson MP Nick Smith over his claim that the Nelson City Council rates have increased on average 13% per annum over the ten year period 2001-2011
Grey Power Nelson
News
with the TDC close behind on 12% p.a. stating these figures are wrong! Although the mayors are contesting this claim Malcolm Alexander CEO of Local Government NZ has agreed with Nick and Statistics NZ who compiled the figures. Nelson rates increased from $17.2 million in 2001 to $51.1 million in 2011 a 197% increase with TDC increasing from 18.5% in 2001 to $52.6 million in 2011, an increase of 184%. Could we say the rates have actually increased by 19.7% and 18.4% per annum on these figures?
TAKING SUMMER BOOKINGS
NOW
The use of water, average, βGeneral rate increase onlyβ (TDCβs favourite) can distort figures but fact canβt. Interestingly my rates were $646.5 in 1998-99 which included a water charge of $172.15. For 2012-13 my rates are $1,636.70 without water which is an additional $500 p.a. The changes to the Local Government Act were meant to introduce some measure of control over councils but the amendments to the Act have been so watered down we will probably see little change in the amount rates are increasing, a pity as Nick Smith was signalling much tighter control of councils revenue, borrowing etc when he was minister. councils must review their responsibilities and return to core ser-
vices. Too much money is being spent on non core items and the monthly schedule of council payments confirms this. As times get even tougher council needs to be more prudent with spending and only essential services should be funded. This will in turn help to curtail rate increase in the future. Under the leadership of our new president, Neville Male, we intend to be much more pro-active with our councils and offer our positive support for initiatives that will ensure that Nelson is an affordable place for our members to live in. Should you require any assistance in dealing with Local Body matters, please contact the Grey Power office and Pam or myself will assist wherever possible.

Transport Report Eric Davy Transport & Mobility This is my first article since the reshuffle of the Nelson Greypower executive. I wish to catch up on some of the changes that have occurred in relation to the Road Rules in New Zealand. You are all aware of the actual changes to the rules in relation to Give Way so I will only say 1. When turning right give way to all other traffic that is not turning or turning left. 2. When approaching a T intersection the traffic turning off the straight through road has right of way over traffic exiting the ending road. As a result of these law changes a number of intersection marking changes were made. This is to make the rules easier and give way priorities clearer

News
to understand and be logical. These changes with which I was involved with the councils have resulted in less confusion and better traffic movements to ensure a smooth transition from the old rules to the new. In my view the elder drivers in New Zealand has less trouble with these changes because you were reverting back to the rules in place when you sat your drivers licence and when I first started driver licence testing. At the moment many of the major roads in Nelson are undergoing resealing of the surface and this will also involve some changes to the markings when they are replaced. Make sure you look well ahead when on these resealed roads so as you have early warning of a change that may affect you. I am starting to consider
the future of what is needed for the users of mobility scooters and because of this I will be asking for a survey to be conducted ascertaining how many members have mobility scooters, where they go, where they would like to go etc. I am interested in finding out if we should have recharging stations in the Nelson CBD and near the Richmond Mall. Would these be of benefit etc. Would a vehicle like a bus that could take 20 mobility scooters and be used to go around the retirement villages and drop people of a Nelson and Richmond in the morning and pick them up again in the afternoon returning them to their villages? I have been advised that
some users of mobility scooters are using them on the roadway with normal traffic. This must not happen. Mobility scooters must only be used on the footpaths at a safe speed. To use these on the road with other traffic is dangerous in that you cannot be seen because you are so low, also I have been told that one gentleman has been seen in Richmond not only driving on the road but on the wrong side of the road. These are a great aid to the infirm but must be used with care. Well that is enough for you to ponder at this time and I will look at expanding this subject further in the future. Safe and happy travelling.

Energy Report
Low User Scheme
Power Retailers must advise you George Truman Energy Spokesman Once a year, usually in the Spring, by way of a footnote on your account, power retailers must advise you of your annual subscription. If this is less than 8000 units I suggest you phone your retailer and ask to switch to the Low User Scheme (if you havenβt
already done so). This will reduce future daily meter charges while increasing the cost of each unit, but still to your advantage. Overall the savings evaporate at the 8000-unit mark, and it will be more expensive if you use more power than that during a 12 month period. In some colder areas of New Zealand, the figure is 9500.

Menβs Shed Waimea
Alan Kissell Coordinator Menβs Shed Waimea The Menβs Shed Movement is rapidly gaining momentum around the globe. Australia has over 800 sheds with 90,000 members and a new shed is opening every day. Ireland has over 70 sheds. NZ currently has approximatley 45 registered sheds with a lot more in various stages of setting up. Nelson/Marlborough region has sheds set up in Picton, Kaikoura, Blenheim, Renwick, Richmond, Tapawera and Motueka. Havelock has a committee and is working towards one. Menβs Sheds bring men together in one space to share their skills, mentor young men, have a laugh and work on community and individual projects. The modern Menβs Shed is an updated version of the backyard shed that has long been a part of our DIY kiwi culture. If you looked inside one you might see blokes
restoring furniture, fixing bicycles for local schools, making community projects, fixing lawn mowers or enjoying a cuppa. Women network better than men. Most men need to be in a working environment before they willingly discuss medical and personal problems that can affect their lives and their families. Most men go to a shed with the support and blessing of their wife or partners. Sheds are lifesavers. Every community should have one to address issues of significant change, retirement or loss of job (men who arenβt in work are often in trouble not because they donβt have money but rather they have lost their identity.) Health, as men tend to avoid going to doctors until it is too late. Also isolation, loneliness, depression or bereavement. Following a public meeting in 2009 we set up a steering committee that spent two years checking out buildings, sections and sheds as well as organizing fundraising and applying for grants. On 1 August 2011 we purchased a Kennel Club building located at Richmond Park and we leased land from Harness Racing Club. We had 40 members at our opening and one year later we have 100. Our running costs are approximatley $10,000 p.a. and we raise this by providing members to Bunningβs, taking DIY classes, as well as tutoring at Nayland College Night Classes. Members make projects which we sell and we have garage
sales and undertake community projects. Our fees are $25 per person p.a. and we open 9am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday. We have a supervisor on duty all the time and their role is to meet and greet, advise, help and assist men with their projects and ensure the workshop operates safely. The majority of our tools and machinery have been donated. We have classes for intellectually handicapped men as well as for Home School boys and girls and are also keen for older members to mentor young men. We are about to build an engineering shed where we will teach welding and light engineering. We are hosting the National Conference for Menz Shed Aotearoa on February 15 to 17 2013 at Richmond Park. Did you know? You can fill in your 2013 Census forms online
The next census will be held on Tuesday, 5 March 2013 The 2013 Census can be completed online or on paper forms, in English or MΓ ori. Statistics NZΓ’€™s collectors will deliver Internet Access Codes and paper forms to households between 16 February and 5 March 2013. They will ask about the number of people expected to be in the household on census night in order to provide the right number of individual forms, plus a dwelling form. If everyone in the
household completes their forms online, the collector may not need to call back. Collectors will pick up completed paper forms between 6 March and 17 March 2013. The next census will be the first one held in seven years, which makes the information we collect more important than ever. Information sourced from Statistics New Zealand

60 years of tracking haircut prices in the CPI
Haircuts have been included in the New Zealand consumerβs price index (CPI) basket of goods and services since 1949. Sixty years ago, in the December 1951 quarter, a womenβs haircut would have set you back about 3 shillings in Auckland or Wellington. Thatβs roughly $8 in todayβs terms, after allowing for general CPI inflation from the December 1951 quarter to the December 2011 quarter. A menβs haircut, on the other hand, would have cost about 2 shillings in 1951 or $6 in todayβs terms. In the December 2011 quarter, the sampled prices for a menβs wet cut ranged from about $18 to $86, with a mean price of about $38. By comparison, the sampled prices
for a womenβs haircut ranged from about $35 to $118, with a mean price of about $63 Other interesting facts; β’ Seventy percent of women who were married in 1950 were teenage girls (under 20 years), compared with just 2.7 percent in 2010. β’ In 1903 there were about four sheep for every human compared with 2008, when there were nine sheep for every human. β’ Population clock as at 31 July 2012 = 4,434,142 β’ For the year to June 2012, grocery food prices decreased 0.6 percent. Cheaper prices were recorded for cakes, biscuits and bread Food price Index: June 2012. Information sourced from Statistics New Zealand

Easiest Ever Christmas Christmas Cake Surprise Treats
Serves 8-10 β’ 1kg mixed fruit β’ 3 cups (750ml) fruit juice β’ 3 cups (525g) self raising flour Preheat oven to 125C. Soak fruits in juice overnight. Stir flour into soaked fruit and mix well. Spoon mixture into a 22cm lined cake tin. Bake for 2Β½ hours in the bottom of the oven or until cooked through. Remove and leave to cool. Wrap in foil or place in an
air tight container where this cake will keep nicely for 3-4 weeks. It is hard to believe something so simple can taste so good! Optional: Add a shot of your favourite tipple, sherry, brandy, rum or grand marnier. For a more traditional cake use the mixed fruit option or for something a little more exotic substitute it with a mix of dried apricots, prunes, mango, pineapple, etc.

Β½ can condensed milk malt Fruit mince, marshmallows or cherries a little coconut
Something to enjoy with visitors or another thought for a gift from your kitchen. This recipe is very easy to put together and could easily be something the grandchildren could make for a gift. Place butter, sugar, cocoa, vanilla and condensed milk in pan and gently melt over low heat. Mix in
crumbs. Cool. Using damp hands shape a spoonful of the mixture around a small ball of fruit mince, a marshmallow (my favourite) or a cherry. Roll in coconut. Keep in fridge. For gift giving place a few surprises on a square of cellophane or xmas paper and tie top or put a few in a nice jar or tin with ribbon.

βOver the last few years we have employed Greg and Jackie to handle three different property transactions for us with first class results. They are lovely people, who find nothing a bother, listen to instructions and carry them out to the letter.β I Stephenson βTheir tenacity and determination certainly achieved the result we had hoped for and this we are very grateful.β R Tasker
