These have been days that none of us will soon forget. What started as a small rural fire last Tuesday afternoon quickly grew into one of the largest firefights the country has ever seen. We have witnessed the uncertainty and fear that comes with a state of emergency on our door step. We have heard the sirens, the endless drone of helicopters. We have seen the army in our streets and friends and family forced from their homes. It has surely been the region’s greatest test.

But we have also witnessed scenes of incredible skill, determination and perseverance in the form of the firefighters, helicopter pilots, volunteers and all manner of personnel that have worked tirelessly over the past week. We are lucky. No homes or lives were lost. But we are also lucky to have these people among us, as part of our community. As if fighting a fire in Tasman wasn’t enough, our resources were tested even further when two more fires broke out in the region – one in Rabbit Island and another in central Nelson on Walters Bluff. That was when, for those living in Nelson, the fire really hit home.

Because despite our closeness to Tasman and seeing the smoke over the way, life almost carried on as normal. That feeling changed last Friday when the Nelson hills went up in smoke. We were all in this together. It highlighted our precarious vulnerability to these sorts of events. They can happen so easily and escalate so quickly. But it also highlighted the incredible generosity and bravery of those who live among us. Our role as a news organisation was small by comparison - helping inform those close and afar of what was going on. It was a privilege to do so. We all have a role in times of dis-

ginning

aster - whether it be in the face of flames or making sandwiches for those at the front line. No matter the contribution, one we can all make is to acknowledge those who gave up their daily lives to help. They did it for us. So, when the final flames are extinguished, the final hot spots dampened down, the firefighters from around the country have left, and those evacuated have all returned home, do not forget what happened here in our days of chaos and triumph. Remember the risks and the challenges we face. And remember, as I am doing right now, to say thank you to those who have helped along the way.

‘Years of work lost’ in fire Locally Owned and Operated

3

Sara Hollyman The owner of half the forest affected by the Pigeon Valley fire says the company won’t know the full impact of the blaze until it is over. The fire closed roads, state highways and schools, displaced thousands from their homes and left hundreds of people temporarily out of work across the district. But the impact is also being felt region wide with loggers, truck drivers and contractors unable to work over the last week. Further restrictions on machinery and tools that could cause sparks has meant that even more professionals are out of work for an unknown amount of time. Tasman Pine Forest Ltd owns almost half of the forest within the fire area with their chief operating officer Steve Chandler estimating that the area of their trees affected is somewhere between 800-1000 hectares. He says they haven’t yet been able to quantify the cost impact of the lost trees yet due to the fire not being over. “Within the containment area not all of the trees are burnt so

He says the age range of the trees range from mature through to trees that were just planted last year. “We’re going to try and salvage what we can but anything below 18-yearsold is very difficult to salvage but we will have to do something with those trees to make way for replanting. We’ve got quite a bit of planning to do.” He says in Tasman Pine alone anywhere between 60 to 100 workers and contractors have been out of work since

Wednesday but across the region there are “many hundreds” of workers affected. He says as soon as the Civil Defence state of emergency is lifted on Wednesday, their crews should be able to get back to forestry operations. “The short-term impact shouldn’t be too significant, but it will have some impact in 10-20 years’ time, it’s not a large part of our estate so we are comfortable that we can manage the impact.” One forestry worker says a high-production crew can harvest up to 250 hectares of land per year, depending on the terrain and tree quality so over the 2300-hectare fire containment area between five- and 10-years’ work could be lost for an entire crew.

Nelson on fire: how Tuesday 5 February: A fire breaks out in Pigeon Valley, near Wakefield, shortly after 2pm. It starts to spread quickly due to dry conditions and strong winds later in the evening. 12 crews battle the fire overnight. Wednesday 6 February: At 8am a State of Emergency is declared in the Nelson Tasman region. The fire spreads to cover 1870 hectares. Fanned by southerly winds over most of Tuesday night it causes material damage from Pigeon Valley north to the Inland Moutere Highway and Waimea West Rd. Crews are now supported by 10 helicopters and 2 fixed wing aircraft with heavy machinery on the ground. Over 100 homes are evacuated or self-evacuated

in Eves Valley, Golden Hills Rd, Redwood Valley Rd, Mallings Rd and Greenacres Rd. It is revealed a farmer tilling dry fields led to a spark that first started the fire. He is said to be “mortified”. A fire breaks out on Rabbit Island in the afternoon covering up to 10 hectares but is contained by nightfall. The first Hercules aircraft lands in Nelson with more firefighting supplies for crews. Thursday 7 February: The fire still covers around still covers 1900 hectares. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern arrives in Nelson and visits the site. Favorable conditions allow crews to contain the spread of the fire and build fire breaks.

Friday 8 February: The fire now covers 2000 hectares. Schools in Wakefield close as a precaution with the town’s residents ‘on notice’ for evacuation The Nelson community starts rallying with donations and offers of help. Wakefield residents north of State Highway 6 between Pigeon Valley Rd and Simmonds Rd are evacuated followed by those in the area bordered by Barton Lane, Higgins Rd and Baigent Valley Rd. The Civil Defence Centre in Wakefield is moved to Saxton Field Stadium. A new blaze breaks out on Sir Stanley Whitehead Reserve in Central Nelson around 3pm. it unfolded told to evacuate. Sunday 10 February: The fire now covers around 2300 hectares. There are 155 firefighters on the ground, plus 23 helicopters and three fixed wing planes. There is now a total fire ban in place for Nelson Tasman and an emergency directive is issued to prohibit activities that could increase the risk of fire breaking out. A successful controlled burnoff operation was carried out in Redwood Valley, helping to create a larger fire break.

Monday 11 February: The fire is still covering around 2300 hectares. There are now around 190 firefighters, 10 helicopters, two fixed-wing planes, 15 heavy machines and 47 incident management staff. The animal evacuation site at Richmond A&P showgrounds is currently home to around 500 animals with more coming in by the hour. Evacuated Wakefield residents are able to return to their homes. Tuesday 12 February: Twenty five fire crews contin-

ued to fight the blaze overnight with Wakefield residents able to stay in their homes. Some light rain early in the morning provided some relief for the crews on the ground. NZ Post services resume deliveries to Wakefield but some rural areas still cannot recieve mail. Seven hundred animals are now in the care of HUHANZ, SPCA and MPI at the Richmond Showgrounds. Richmond Civil Defence Centre relocated to the Richmond New Life Church at 85 Wensley Rd, open from 8am to 7pm.

Volunteer firefighter gives it his all Sara Hollyman Reporter

sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Chris Noonan and his partner Sarah haven’t seen much of each other lately. Chris is a firefighter in Nelson Volunteer Brigade 212 and for the last week has been tasked with helping fight the massive Pigeon Valley blaze. Over the past eight days he has spent well over 80 hours protecting homes and dampening hotspots, with just one day off. Together Chris and Sarah run a party animal zoo with around 25 animals in their care including reptiles, birds, ponies and fish. Sarah has been lucky, her place of employment has given her all the time off she needs to be able to look after the animals while Chris is busy with the fires. The pair are expecting their first child in March and Chris says it’s amazing that she’s been able to look after everything while being so heavily pregnant. He says the battle against the massive blaze has been challenging. “The first three days were the worst, it was very physical and mentally demanding.

Nelson Volunteer Brigade 212 firefighter Chris Noonan has been fighting the fire since it began. Photo: Supplied. "We can’t quite relax yet, but the pressure has been taken off in the last couple of days." Chris also works part-time as a landscaper and a builder but says fighting the biggest fire he’s ever dealt with has given him a new determination. “It’s given me the drive to train

harder and be more prepared. “Nothing can prepare you for something like this, no training, no preparation, but you rely on your officer to give you guidance.” He says when he first arrived at the fire on Tuesday he was really concerned for people and their homes.

“It’s quite scary to see the homes in the fire, initially there’s nothing really you can do except try to protect people’s homes the best you can. "The first initial day here in Redwood Valley, as the sun came up, that was the stand out moment for me, when you can really see

the extent of it all. "You've just got in your mind 'if we win here, everyone wins, if we fail, everyone fails'." He says the response from the public has been amazing. A lot of people have been giving us the thumbs up, waving and saying we’ve done a good job whic is great, but there’s thousands of volunteers so it’s really been a team effort. He says his body is holding up pretty well. "I had a couple of pretty big blisters on the feet on Tuesday but apart from that it's pretty good. "The public have been so responsive to anything we need, we ask for some items like thick woollen socks for instance, and the community is just like 'yep we've got this'." Chris says once the fire is over, he’s looking forward to some creature comforts. “I’m most looking forward to everyone being able to get back to some normal routine and focusing on getting ready for the baby.” The fire is expected to be burning for many weeks to come and Brigade 212 are not sure how long they will be needed to continue working on it, but they will return day after day as long as they are needed.

Heroes helping heroes

Though the Pigeon Valley fire has destroyed homes and forced thousands out of home, it has also showcased the generous spirit of the community. When Margaret Goff heard about the fire raging through the region, she knew she had to step up to help. Though she is unable to fight the fire herself, she has been on a mission to feed the brave men and women on the front-lines. Margaret is a cleaner at the Nelson Suburbs clubrooms at Saxton Field and knew it would be the perfect base for a food drop. “I knew they needed help and I knew I had access to a facility that could help, I asked the club if I could open it up and they said to go for it.” With her faithful helper Anna Perry-Smith, the women set about making hundreds of sandwiches to feed the hundreds of hungry heroes on the ground. Margaret put the call out to the community to help and soon the

clubrooms were flooded with donations. She says the response has been mind-blowing. "It just keeps coming." Among the food being sent to families and front-liners are fifty lasagnes, 250 boxes of bacon and eggs and mountains of sandwiches. She says she has lost count of the number of volunteers and food items that have poured through the doors. Anyone affected by the fires are welcome to go to the clubrooms for food, water and shelter. “We have taken out boxes and boxes of sandwiches, we made enough for 250 people today and they have gone so we will be in for a long night making sandwiches.” She says, with Nelson being such a caring community, this was not a surprise. After they were badly affected by Cyclone Gita, dozens of strangers came to the aid of Jill Francois and her family. So, when the devastating fire broke out across Pigeon Valley, she did not hesitate to answer the

The team were inundated with volunteers and contributions of food and money, which meant they could increase their usual production as well as making sandwiches for firefighters. Bellyful Nelson Coordinator Sarah Kerby says they recognise that people want to help and they were uniquely placed to coordinate these efforts. “With lots of community support we’ve been able to get food to those who need it without getting in the way of the firefighting efforts.” Bellyful Nelson Cookathon Coordinator Corina McKay, whose husband is fighting the fires on the frontlines, says she hasn’t seen him much lately. “I wish I was out there on the frontline too, so it’s nice to be able to support the efforts by putting food together for the firefighters.”

The men who raised the alarm on Walters Bluff Charles Anderson

Cairo Preston was sitting in his backyard on Milton St, looking up at Walters Bluff thinking how terrible it would be if the whole hillside went up in flames. "Next moment, 'boom' it went." Cairo tried to raise the alarm. I was saying 'f***, f***. f***', I've got to wake mum up. I was looking at it in la la land. Then I was like 'dad, dad, dad,'. He just ran to get a bucket." Shane Paratene didn't think, he just grabbed a bucket and scaled the hill but when he reached it, he knew his bucket was not going to do the job.

Shane Paratene, Kane Hippolite and Cairo Preston were the first to raise the alarm and then try and fight the Walters Bluff fire on Friday. Photo: Charles Anderson "It was hot. It was crazy hot." It was at about 2.30pm on Friday afternoon when the fire started becoming noticeable around

Nelson. Helicopters and fixed wing planes were diverted from the Pigeon Valley blaze and soon started dunking monsoon buck-

ets into Tasman Bay. But before all that happened, Shane grabbed his neighbour's hose and started dampening down around the nearby properties while Cairo called the emergency services. "When you do a lot of hangis you know when a fire is going to start," said Shane. The fire quickly got out of control and evacuations were ordered on Iwa Rd. Other residents tried to dampen down their properties with garden hoses. Onlookers watched in horror as they saw the hillside go up in smoke. It is not clear what started the fire but police are treating it as suspicious. It started near the

lower end of Iwa Rd and spread quickly up the hillside. "It had the potential to place further lives and properties at risk," said a police spokesperson. "In particular, as part of our investigation we want to identify and speak with three males seen on a bench on the Centre of New Zealand track in close proximity to Iwa Road, around 1.30pm on Friday." They are described as Caucasian and between 16 and 20-years-old. Two were possibly wearing baseball caps and one had fair hair. Police are asking people to call 0800 08 02 09 if they witnessed any suspicious activity around Iwa Road on Friday afternoon.

Chopper pilot fights fires, gets evacuated Charles Anderson Matt Gibb was at work on Thursday afternoon when the call came through. The Eves Valley helicopter pilot already knew what it was about. He could see the smoke. Matt was the first helicopter on the scene of the Pigeon Valley fire. But the effort has since turned into the largest aerial fire fight in New Zealand’s history, featuring 23 helicopters. “They quickly realised it was beyond just us and put the call out for more help,” Matt says. But what was quickly apparent is that Matt’s own business, Helicharter Nelson, was at also risk and soon had to be evacuated. “I couldn’t take helicopter back to Eves Valley, I didn’t trust it would be there in the morning.” Instead he took it to Nelson Airport. “My wife and her friends were there at the hangar in Eves Valley clearing out things that were special.” Usually, Matt does general utility work and transporting people into the backcountry across the top of the south and the West Coast. This was a different kind of job. As an “air attack specialist” Matt’s task was to take orders from two other helicopters that were assessing the scene. He would focus in on one area and go back and forth between and water source and the fire, trying to dampen down the area so ground crews could go in. “You are taking the punch out of the fire and cooling it down. You have got the wind and the heat in the fire. "You just pick on sides and areas

and where they think needs attention.” Because of his focus – working up to 12-hour days – he only heard about the fire spreading over the radio. “You are just going from water to fire, water to fire, over and over.” He said that, in terms of danger, you only attack what you can. “If you can only pick at the edges of it, you just do that. If it’s dangerous then you can’t attack it. You work on what you can.” When he heard about two other fires breaking out in Rabbit Island and Nelson, he thought “here we go”. “The last thing we needed was to lose resources.” However, it was ironic as all air resources were available to fight both of them. “The operations were so much quicker.” Matt has since been able to land at his hangar in Eves Valley but the fight isn’t over yet. He has been swapping out with his other pilots so he can rest but is keen to get back to the task and make sure the fire is out for good. "Then we will know the job is done." Terry Murdoch, who owns Christchurch Helicopters, joined many others from around the country as demand came in for people to help. "I have to say the hospitality has just been amazing." He says that the team at Saxton Motor Lodge "moved heaven and earth" to get them accommodation. "And all the volunteers providing food, it has really been something." He is back in Christchurch now but thankful for the team of pilots he worked with.

Relief and fright - Evacuees speak of uncertain times Jonty Dine As the Pigeon Valley fire crept closer to her Wakefield home, Sam Burson made the call to selfevacuate her and her two daughters. “It was coming down Spring Grove and because I have two young kids, decided that we would get out.” It was last Thursday that Sam made the call to take her threeyear-old Rose and four-monthold Isla to her mother’s home in Motueka. She was told on Monday afternoon that she could return with 3000 other residents. Her husband stayed in Wakefield, as the engineer was helping maintain the excavators which

are securing the perimeter of the blaze. Having her husband on the frontlines isn’t easing the young mum’s anxiety. “He is exhausted but was able to come home last night to have a bit of a break.” Sam says the evacuation has taken a toll on her daughters. "My oldest has been playing up but we are just trying to maintain normality as much as possible. It’s been stressful but we are all safe.” She says the smoke cloud which hovered over her home added to the feeling of angst. “Luckily the weather has been a bit cooler, so we were able to lock our house up and protect the kids from the smoke.” Hundreds of evacuees gathered

Elderly couple Graeme and Pat Eden were given ten minutes to evacuate their home on Friday afternoon. "It's been stressful, something we have never felt before, it does upset you, but you have to deal with it,” says Pat. Pat’s sister in-law cut short her caravan trip around the country to come home and put up Pat and Graeme in Richmond. “It was lovely of them to do that but the biggest issue for people is not having somewhere to go, not everyone has relations or friends they can stay with, I have heard there are a few people having to camp in a pop-up tent.”

The couple say they have been struggling to sleep as they come to terms with the “sheer enormity” of the fire. “We just have to deal with it and hope it doesn’t last too long.” Pat says they took minimal items as they fled their Wakefield home. “Our lives are more important, we have still got each other.” The blaze that has caused carnage across the Tasman District came within 10 metres of Mike and Ga-

brielle Wearing’s property. Their home in Redwood Valley was very nearly engulfed by the inferno. “We don’t know how they managed to save it,” says Mike. “There were grass fires on both sides of the property.” Gabrielle says the fire burnt the boundary of their property, singed the grass and their macrocarpa shelter. “It’s just luck of the draw.” Mike says it has been very disconcerting time. The couple say they were called by neighbours at around 9pm on Tuesday evening and told to leave the house. “We grabbed our two dogs and got out in a hurry.” Unfortunately, they had to leave behind their sheep and still don’t know if they made it.

Café comes to college Locally Owned and Operated

Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Hot chips and pies are a thing of the past at Nayland College as the school gets its very own student café. Kuaka Café officially opened on Monday morning, serving up barista made coffees and house made food to hungry pupils. It signals a change in the way students get their kai at the local college with a raft of different food options now on the table for hungry students. Principal Daniel Wilson says the café is a collaboration between food provider Libelle Group and their school hospitality programme. Around 100 students will be making and selling food and coffee at the café as part of their hands-on experience. “Some will be learning how to make coffee, while others will be preparing food in our new commercial kitchen.” Daniel says the idea was proposed a few years ago but it’s taken a while to get it the project off the ground. “We had to get our hospitality

Student leader Zoe Fitzgerald says all the food available at Kuaka Café is “good and filling” and reasonably priced. There are many different options in the cafe

cabinets - from wraps to salads, along with pasta and rice balls.

She also says the coffee goes down pretty fantastically with students looking to get a bit of a caffeine hit before class - and the teachers, too. “Quite a few students drink coffee,” she says. “But there are other hot drinks available and there are microwaves and hot water available so students can make their own food.” The café is located by the back field of the school and features a big wrap-around deck with outdoor seating so students can enjoy their food in an al fresco environment. “It’s an environment where students can sit and study. It has a wonderful relaxed feel and has been designed to offer indoor outdoor flow and views of the Tasman ranges,” says Daniel. Initially, the café will only be open during break times. However, Daniel says that the facility could also open before school starts and for sports events and parent evenings in the future.

JIM BEAM WHITE LABEL BOURBON HANDLE

American as apple pie and a testament to quality, tradition and passion, Jim Beam is the best-selling brand of bourbon in the world. Seven generations of craftsmanship go into every bottle, along with corn, rye, barley malt, water, time and pride. Jim Beam is the flagship product of the Jim Beam distillery, founded in 1795, and family operated for seven generations. It was given the name “Jim Beam” in 1933 after Colonel James B. Beam, who rebuilt the business following Prohibition. When you take a sip, you’re savoring a bourbon that has been produced essentially the same way by the same family for more than 200 years. Isn’t it good to know some things never go out of style?

Opinion

Your Voice Waimea Rd speed change: Dear Sir, I was dismayed to hear of a new intersection planned from Princes Dr onto Waimea Rd, right next to social housing. This intersection means that Waimea will go down to just one lane in and out of town and NCC want a reduction in the speed over Bishopdale Hill to 50 kph. This change and the intersection will totally jam up traffic in and out of town. Waimea carries an incredible amount of traffic, more in fact than any two-lane city road should. NZTA engineers have told me the only reason was due to the presence of two lanes over the hill and the fact it goes from 50 to 70 here …. this causes a venturi-like event and “sucks” traffic out of town, allowing for an above average traffic flow. When this intersection goes in, Waimea goes down to one lane and the speed drops to 50 kph, traffic will slow to a crawl all the

way out of town. Also, this new intersection requires two lanes into town meaning that all the mature trees in Station Park will be cut down! Nice one NCC and all this was somehow “considered minor” so the public was never notified or consulted. You can submit to NCC by Feb 15th on this proposed speed change. Tim Bayley Welcome Cloak: Nelson council’s Welcome Cloak that is going back over the river is a dead loss. $180,000 dollars has been spent and still the cloak is not sighted/ erected in its new position. Nelson Matters The fires that have ravaged Tasman and Nelson this last week have brought out the best in our communities. I pay tribute to the heroic work by so many that have prevented the loss of life, saved dozens of homes and provided refuge for animals. I am writing this column from my caravan at the Welfare HQ for Civil Defence at Saxton Stadium where I have been fielding questions and assisting people in getting access for caring for animals, income support, alternative schooling and transport. My strongest praise goes to those directly involved in fighting this forest fire. The volunteers from our Richmond, Stoke, Mapua,

Motueka and Takaka Brigades have been outstanding. So too have our Brightwater, Appleby, Hira, Upper Takaka and and Ngtatimoti Rural Fire Forces. These firefighters have been doing the hard, dirty job on the ground. We should be equally grateful for the skilled helicopter pilots in the air and the workers driving the water trucks, bull dozers and excavators that are containing the fire. They have been doing extraordinary hours in tough conditions. I also acknowledge the work of our Mayors, Civil Defence, Police, Army and MPI. This fire is the largest in New Zealand in 64 years and is a tough test for the newly merged

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). The confused response to Christchurch’s Port Hills fire two years ago helped drive our former National Government to unite our urban and rural fire services. This response has been much better lead and is a credit to FENZ. I applaud the efforts of National Incident Controller John Sutton and our local Principal Rural Fire Officer Ian Reade. The volunteer effort to support our emergency services has been unbelievable. Red Cross, St Johns, Rotary, Huha and our Marae and Churches have stood out. Thousands of Nelsonians have provided food, accommo-

Councillor aims to red-light Waimea Rd traffic plan supported due to there not being enough space, and merge lanes are would be unsafe, due to Waimea Rd’s high traffic volumes. Marg Parfitt, council’s acting group manager infrastructure, says a recent safety and capacity assessment of the proposed intersection showed the need for traffic lights to safely accommodate the traffic generated by the development. “The resource consent was granted on a non-notified basis given the agreement, by traffic engineers preparing the design and the traffic experts assessing the application, that the traffic effects on the wider road network of this change in the land use would be no more than minor.” She adds that the intersection design includes a southbound lane that isn’t controlled by the traffic lights so will allow “free traffic flow” in that direction. “Northbound traffic will only be stopped when a vehicle wants to get in or out of Princes Dr.” Meanwhile, Mel says it all comes back to communication. “I’m just asking on behalf of these people.”

A Nelson city councillor is on a mission to back-track plans to install new traffic lights on one of Nelson’s busiest routes. Mel Courtney is preparing to lodge a notice of motion to council, asking that the non-notified resource consent granted to Questral Corporation in 2016, relating to the installation of traffic lights on Waimea Rd, be revoked. The notice of motion has been seconded by councillor Luke Acland and will go before a full council meeting on 19 February. The new intersection and lights will be close to the old Bishopdale Pottery site near Station Reserve, 350m north of Beatson Rd with the new road providing access to the Tasman Heights subdivision and Coastal Views Lifestyle Village. Mel says he sought the views of a cross-section of the community through an online poll, which attracted 1,700 votes. He said 75 percent of those votes thought that a roundabout or the merging

Wine and Food Festival postponed The Nelson Wine and Food Festival has been postponed due to the Pigeon Valley fires. The iconic event at Middle Earth Winery in Brightwater features the best of the region's wine, beer and food and was due to occur this weekend but organisers have put it off because of disruptions caused by the fires. At time of publication there was no back up date for the festival so for full details on the new time for the family- friendly event check out the Nelson Weekly next week.

Kerri Bowman with a photo of her son who had just completed a skydive for his 19th birthday. Photo: Charles Anderson.

Mum’s walk for hope in the darkness Charles Anderson Jordan Bowman would have been 21. He was young and funny, a great big brother and an apprentice builder. But he was also carrying something inside him. Next Sunday, his mum Kerri wants to honour all of that – the light and the dark. In November 2017, Jordy took his own life.

“I just want to break that fear of talking about it down,” Kerri says. “I know there are a lot of people out there who are affected by it that shut down. As hard as the pain is, if you don’t face it what do you do with it?” On February 23, the day before her son’s birthday, she is organising a Hope Walk from Anzac Park to Tahunanui Beach. “So many people out there

hide it or have hidden it,” Kerri says. “This walk is to say ‘this happens and we need to talk about it’.” She says the guilt, shame and pain attached to suicide are ugly. “There are the things I could have, should have, would have that I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.” At the conclusion of the walk she wants people to be able to let lanterns go into the water

as a way of symbolising letting go of that sort of guilt. “For me it’s all about hope. If you haven’t got that what have you got.” She says Jordy was the last person you would expect to have made such a decision. But he kept his feelings to himself. “That’s why I want to talk about it because it can happen to anybody.” Hope Walk starts at Anzac Park at 4pm on February 23.

SPeedway This weekend is the turn of the open wheel brigade to hit the Moutere clay here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway as we host the Waimea Testing Station New Zealand Three Quarter Midget (TQ) Grand Prix. We expect around thirty cars to enter this event as most of the competitors will head north up the state highway after a New Zealand title at Ruapuna in Christchurch the week

before. The super-fast Jeremy Webb from Canterbury would have to be a favourite while Alicia McLauchlan, Dylan StoneCuthbert and Morgan Frost could be amongst the locals who could do well if everything goes their way. A good North Island contingent is also entered with fast cars and drivers competing from Western Springs in Auckland and Napier, both tracks being strong in TQ racing.

New Hospice home nears completion Sara Hollyman The new home for Nelson Tasman Hospice is taking shape and the doors were opened to the public over the weekend to get a glimpse of the near-complete facility. The $11.5 million facility is due to be finished on March 29 with staff and patients moving in early April. A marathon fundraising effort has seen the trust raise $13,320,000 to purchase the land, build, and fit out the new facility, with just $280,000 to go to reach their target of $13.6 million. Nelson Tasman Hospice fundraising and marketing manager Paul McIntyre says it has been a huge effort by the whole community. He was thrilled to be able to show locals what their contributions have gone towards. “It’s absolutely beautiful, I’m

speechless really, they’ve done such a fantastic job,” says Kay Lindbom of Stoke. Her awe was mirrored by the hundreds of people who flowed through the doors on Sunday. Every aspect of the design has been carefully thought out, from the extra-wide hallways that can accommodate two beds passing each other to the double doors of patient rooms which allow beds to be wheeled into the garden area. While the facility can only accommodate 10 overnight patients, a day unit will give access to the 180 patients who are registered with Hospice at any one time to come in for things like blood tests or a few hours of respite care. Paul says many people are shocked that only 10 people can stay, but he says most are cared for in the community. “When you think about it, where you want to mostly be

looked after is in your home or rest home, but it will provide great respite care.” Paul says it’s the first time since 1999 that all Hospice staff will be working under one roof. An education and training room will mean Hospice staff can provide training on palliative care to other health professionals and the landscaping will feature 117 native trees alongside a large daffodil garden. “It really is amazing, every time you come you get a bit of a buzz on how much it's changed and how incredible the building is, it’s really impressive,” says Paul. A four-bedroom family apartment on site will mean that family can stay with their loved ones and not have to worry about finding accommodation. “This is a real hub for Hospice services, the level of care that’s going to be provided is just incredible.”

If you are aged 20 or under, and are pregnant, or have a child or children, Nelson Young Parents’ School can offer you free study opportunities in a supportive, modern learning environment. Established in 2013, Nelson Young Parents’ School is located at Auckland Point School, and is where trained teachers can help you achieve NCEA and other

Make your child’s birthday truly magical by inviting Ms Fizzberry to the party! There will be magic, fun, laughter and memories to last a lifetime! Ms Fizzberry’s 45-minute Magic Show is ideal for 4 to 9 year olds. “You can have a personalised magic show for a birthday child, who gets to be the star of the show,” says Felicity, owner of Flossie Balloons and Entertainment. “It’s all about making your child’s day really special, with a personalised gift at the end. It’s very interactive with opportunities for the children to assist Ms Fizzberry who is a bit forgetful, so she needs help! I often hear about kids who are practising to be magicians, for months and months afterwards!” Optional extras at your child’s party can include pre-made twisted balloons or balloons which can be twisted immediately after the magic show. There’s also fabulous face painting available and giant bubbles! For more information, visit www.flossieballoons. co.nz or www.msfizzberry.co.nz

The Children’s Garden is now fast approaching its third birthday in April. Celebrating and recognising the importance of ‘Well-being’ has become a very important and intragrel focus for this early learning and care centre. “It was very pleasing to have such a positive ERO report, just over a year ago, highlighting our key features – how we create a calm, peaceful and respectful environment for children and also our commitment to achieving high quality learning,” says Principal Natasha Kibble. “This year we have been continuing

to go from strength to strength with our curriculum design and developing our focus on nurturing well-being of selves and others, and cultivating positive pathways to school. “The setting at The Children’s Garden is spacious, natural, open and homely, and the curriculum is based on the children’s interests; we focus on the children’s natural urges and desires to play so they are driven by their own imagination and curiosity of the world around them.” “We believe the possibilities for children to thrive are endless

when play is the vehicle for their love of learning.” After studying the Pikler approach in Budapest, Natasha and husband Mark established The Children’s Garden here in Nelson, incorporating this approach into what is proving to be a popular and positively engaging programme, where the majority of the day is spent in the garden and exploring the wonders of the outdoors. Enrolments are now open for April (term two). Phone 03-553-0665 for more information or check out The Children’s Garden page on Facebook.

Workmates conquer Coast to Coast SportS Jonty Dine

Hannah Greenhough’s first Coast to Coast couldn’t have gone much better. Not only did the Nelson endurance racer win her section in one of the country’s most arduous races, she also managed to beat a Kiwi legend to the finish. Hannah and her teammate and workmate Andy Selwood won the mixed tandem section in a time of 14 hours 21 minutes at the weekend. This placed them second overall for tandem teams over the 243km run, kayak and cycle. “We were pretty happy with that result.” She says the thought of crossing the finishline, and the custard square and pie waiting for her, kept her going. “It was a huge buildup and the feeling of satisfaction was an awesome feeling, we made it.” Though she is no stranger to endurance events, this was one of the toughest tasks she has undertaken. Over two days of racing, Hannah says rough terrain, river crossings and strong winds made for a gruelling grind.

Cawthron workmates Hannah Greenhough and Andy Selwood after finishing the Katmandu Coast to Coast over the weekend. Photo: Supplied. “The river was low so we were hitting the bottom a lot in the kayak but it was a good challenge, we pushed through.” As an added bonus, Hannah managed to pip former All Black captain Richie McCaw to the finish.

“Richie wasn’t feeling too good on the run so that’s where we made up most of the time, I think we were maybe 20 minutes ahead of them, it’s pretty cool to say you beat Richie McCaw at anything.” Hannah says the body has held

up well after being pushed to its limits. “I’m a bit stiff today but surprisingly OK.” She says there was plenty of potential for injuries but luckily they both came away unscathed. Their first placed finish was the culmination of months of a regimented training regime. “We were doing at least 15 hours of training a week and getting up to 60-plus in our biggest weeks.” She says, without the support of her employers at the Cawthron Institute who donated half of the race fee, the result would not have been possible. She also says they couldn’t have done it without their highly efficient support crew of Jenelle Strickland and Matt Davies. With little time to recover, Hannah’s focus now shifts the ‘Spirited Woman’ event in Gisborne next month. “It’s a nine-hour event, we came second last year so will hope to go one better.” Overall winners of the longest day were Simone Maier in the women's section and Dougal Allan in the men's section.

Harriers: Over forty runners and walkers from Athletics Nelson and Waimea Harriers travelled to Westport last Saturday to take on the challenge of the Buller Marathon and Half Marathon. Buller is one of the largest and most scenic marathons in New Zealand, with about 1800 competitors this year. Our athletes performed very well and were strongly represented in their age group placings and nine of them received awards at the Festival’s Award Ceremony later in the afternoon. Nelson results: Marathon: Klaartje van Shie, 2nd 35+ 2.21.36, Linda Sillery, 2nd 65+ 5.43.02. Half Marathon Walk: Ian Courtenay, 2nd 50+, 2.24.43, Alan West, 1st 70+ 2.24.43, Peter Hague, 1st 60+ 2.26.59 Half Marathon Run: Paula Canning, 1st 45+ 1.27.07, Graeme Sellars, 1st 60+ 1.34.17, Colette Read 2nd 45+, 1.36.37 and Yvonne West, 1st 65+ 1.53.14.

Cricket: The Central Stags will have a shot at redemption this Friday. Despite going down to the Auckland Aces on Saturday, the Central Stags have secured a spot in the 2019 Super Smash play-offs. The Stags will have the chance to claim the country’s premier T20 title when they take on the Aces again in the preliminary final. Opener George Worker continued his fine form with a half century as Central set the Aces 174 for victory. The Aucklanders cruised to the target for the loss of just two wickets, Black Cap Mark Chapman leading the way with an unbeaten 75. The first ball of the preliminary final is at 4.10pm.

Stoke/Nayland’s batsmen crumble in Palmy Jonty Dine Stoke/Nayland’s successful season stumbled at the weekend as they went down to a merciless Marist side in Palmerston North on Saturday. Fresh off winning the 110 over club competition with a relatively comfortable victory over WTTU, Stoke travelled north for the Regional finals of the Club Nationals full of confidence. Batsmen Darius Skeaping, Sam Chamberlain and Clayton Campbell were all coming off half-centuries the weekend prior, while bowlers Patrick Howes, Ben Stark and Dylan Eginton have been in hot form with the ball. However, the side collapsed dramatically to be rolled for a paltry 88 after just 22 overs in their pursuit of 153. The modest chase proved too tall of a task after Stoke managed to claim ten wickets in the first innings. Stoke paid the price for not be-

ing able to form a partnership of any significance and frankly never looked likely of reaching the target. Despite a solid bowling performance and some sensational fielding, the batsmen failed to step up for Stoke. Sam says the loss was a tough one to swallow. “We fought hard in the field and did a good job to restrict them to 150 but let ourselves down unfortunately with the bat.” Sam says with a first-class bowler in Navin Patelin in its ranks Marist were too strong. “He went right through our top order, he was pretty class.” Sam says what was particularly disappointing about the performance is the fact they are a much better batting unit than they showed. “It was potentially a good opportunity missed to go onto the next game, but that’s cricket.” Stoke will enjoy the bye this weekend as the 50-over Nelson competition resumes.

Exceptional Fishing Andy Brannen For those that have managed to sneak out between 30 knot sou-westers, most have found it tough going as the snapper are still out spawning in the deeper water. There is still the odd one in close, but they are few and far between. On the positive side the numbers of legal sized kingfish are still exceptional, these provide exceptional fun combined with good eats! The albacore tuna are finally here and we are getting reports from all over the bay. Most of them were caught off Cape Soucis just a few miles from the shore. You can tow your boat to Okiwi Bay or head outfrom Nelson, the dark blue water that is essential for tuna fishing can be found less than 20 miles from the harbour at the moment. Last weekend Amanda, one of Nelson harbourmasters, spoke at our club social afternoon and

gave a great insight into the role of the harbourmasters and her observations. We have some great lifejacket compliance but some poor compliance on vessel lights – let’s say there is plenty of room for “enlightenment.” The great advice on lifejacket maintenance was very helpful as well. Only a few weeks now until the Snapper Cup, this year’s competition will be bigger than ever! Remember, there are prizes for the heaviest and closest to average – so really any snapper can score some brilliant prizes. There are also kahawai, gurnard, kingfish and crayfish divisions with adults and junior categories and one BIG lucky prize – you don’t even have to catch a fish to win this one! Check out the Dawnbreakers webpage for all the good juice about the competition and be sure to enter.

Close race in perfect conditions Peter Gibbs There's a good reason why Nelson swimmers are prominent in the national Banana Boat Series - it's the constant highlevel competition, week after week, in the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series. Luke Kelly has been at the top in the national races, but every week he has to battle it out in the Nelson series. Last Thursday, 146 swimmers competed over 1600m or 500m on a perfect night in Nelson harbour. Bendi Kepess took his second win of the series, winning a four-way sprint at the end of the 1600m swim. Racing home in 19 minutes 25 seconds, Kepess had a three second buffer over Alec Swan, with Fergus Drummond (19.29) third ahead of Kelly (19.32) and Oxford Bayley (19.39). Kelly remains at the top of the leader board with four races left in the series Abbey Smale has consistently been the top woman this season. On Thursday she took

Lowe’s loyalties tested at Leinster Former Nelson College and Mako star James Lowe was back in Nelson recently on break from playing in Ireland for Leinster. He caught up with reporter Jonty Dine about Ireland, the All Blacks and his beloved Mako. Local rugby hero James Lowe has yet to decide if he will give up on his All Black dream and pledge allegiance to Ireland. After three seasons as a cult favorite at the Chiefs, James made the move to Dublin in 2017 to join European giants Leinster. The 26-year-old winger made an immediate impression with his ability to beat a man and sniff out the try-line. Half-way through his three-year residency which would make him eligible to represent Ireland, James says he has yet to officially declare his allegiance to either nation. “It’s a bridge that will be crossed eventually, there is a lot to come in the next 18 months, but I am really enjoying myself and who knows what the future will hold.” James recently returned to Nelson to surprise his parents.

Former Mako star James Lowe has been lighting up the Irish rugby scene but says he still keeps a close eye on his former team. Photo: Shuttersport “Mum almost had a tear running down her face.” He says it has been refreshing to be back in the region. “It’s so great to come home and see so many friendly faces, it’s put into perspective why I have gone overseas.” James says he has been blessed to be doing the ‘one thing he’s good at’ on the other side of the world and set his family up for the future. “It’s awesome, the club is performing very strongly at the moment.”

Leinster currently boast 16 internationals including Irish superstars Tadhg Furlong, Jordan Larmour and Jonny Sexton, making competition for starting spots fierce. “I managed to come to a team that still challenges me every day, no jersey is ever guaranteed.” The club is currently the kings of Europe having won the Pro 14 and Champions Cup titles in 2018. “We have managed to win both comps last year and we are on track to do the same this year.”

Leinster recently attained the services of Argentinian legend Felipe Contempomi as their backs coach who has brought some South American flair to the side. “It has been a breath of fresh air, I feel our back play has come so far, it’s been awesome to see.” James says, while the style differs from footy at home, the level is still very high. He says his move from Nelson to a city of four million was made smoother by the club. “I was lucky enough to have everything laid out on a platter from

a flat to cell phone, bank accounts and visas. It’s a credit to the club, they really look after their foreign boys, apart from the weather, it’s been bloody awesome so far.” The Irish public have embraced James and his family. “My girlfriend has settled in very well and my parents have been able to come over, they got more camera time at the game than I did, Ireland has just been very welcoming.” He says the rise of Irish rugby to second in the world rankings has been impressive to witness. “When they beat the All Blacks last year, it was the best game of footy I have ever seen, With his home nation taking on his adopted, James’ loyalties were tested. “I was completely on the fence. We were surrounded by Irish people but the way I saw it was I had 30 mates running around on a patch of grass trying to outplay each other, was an awesome spectacle.” One team where his loyalties will never be questioned however are his beloved Mako. “I watch them religiously, I’m so proud of where I come from. I'm a die hard Tasman supporter and will be till my last breath.”
