Nelson set to celebrate RWC countdown Forget 2011, the party starts this weekend and thousands will be there to kick it off kiwi-style. This Saturday Nelson is attempting break a Guinness World Record by hosting the world’s largest haka at Tahunanui Beach. The haka is to celebrate one year until the world comes to Nelson for the Rugby World Cup. Three thousand people are needed to perform the famous Ka mate haka, often performed by the All Blacks, and they are encouraged to wear whatever feels right. “If you are Scottish, wear you whanau tartan, if you are part of a sporting group, wear your uniforms,
this is a celebration of the great melting pot in Aotearoa,’’ says orgainser Mike Elkington. Around 100 people, men and women, turned up to a haka practice at Neale Park last Sunday and Mike says he has taught the haka to hundreds of other people from around the region over the past couple of months. The mass haka is being held this Saturday, 11 September with organisers asking people to arrive by 1pm for the world record attempt at 3pm. Everyone is invited to attend and be a part of history, rain, hail or shine.

It will keep us up with the play. Anything new to town is good. I always like to know what’s going on, and the good news inside will help lift peoples spirits each Tuesday.
It’s great to have a purely local based paper cover only local happenings and issues. It’s the local news I’m interested in.
I think it’s really cool. I like seeing people I know, and like the positive stories and local sport news.
Locally owned is good for the region and I think Nelson people will like something different. I will look forward to reading the sport.
• Mayoral Candidate Aldo Miccio today proposed a Regional Education and Job Summit be held at the beginning of 2011, to develop a strategy that aims to see more Nelsonians being trained in Nelson for Nelson jobs. “Solutions to education and jobs are needed quickly,” Aldo says. “I believe the Nelson City Council should stand up and act as a facilitator to assist, where possible.”

Mayoral race wide open, says poll
FREE
Andrew Board Nelson’s mayoral race is wide open according to a phone poll conducted by Nelson Weekly, with the majority of respondents still unsure who they want to lead the city for the next three years. The straw poll canvassed the opinions of 150 Nelson voters, more than 50 percent of whom said they either did not care or Aldo Miccio did not know who would get their vote by the October 9 deadline. Apathy amongst voters is particularly high in local body elections with only 50.68 percent voting in the 2007 Nelson City Council election. But many of the undecided voters spoken to by Nelson Weekly indicated they would vote, they Kerry Marshall just were not sure for which candidate. Those who did know favoured Aldo Miccio to claim the chains with deputy mayor Rachel Reese breathing down his neck with 19 votes, three behind Aldo. Mike Ward was particularly strong in Nelson South; because it was thought he would be unlikely to proceed with the Rachel Reese often-talked-about southern motorway through the Victory community. But could not leap ahead of current mayor Kerry Marshall who received 13 approvals, two ahead of Mike. Long-time candidate and Mainland Television owner Gary Watson polled in last position with seven votes. Mike Ward With only a month until Election Day the race for the mayoralty will now go into overdrive as the five candidates attempt to woo those swing voters, so Nelson Weekly asked each candidate why they should get your vote. Aldo: “Looking into the future, Nelson needs to be a region where everyone has an option of raising their children here Gary Watson
and can afford to enjoy their retirement. In my first year, if elected mayor, I promise to hold all new spending, so I can work with council management to look under the bonnet, reprioritise the council’s spending, and identify efficiencies and cost savings.” Rachel: “The next three years require strong informed leadership to make decisions on transport options, a conference centre, arts and sports facilities and development of public spaces, particularly our city to sea link. An effective council sets priorities, recognising we cannot afford to do everything on the public or councillor wish list. While ensuring core services are maintained we must focus on rates affordability, making it easy to do business with council.” Mike: “In a nutshell Nelson is well placed to transform itself into one of the planet’s truly creative lifestyle and sustainability role models. I have put together a range of initiatives towards this end that also address our most pressing needs, including a comprehensive transport strategy including regular and frequent public transport. Establishing clear and attractive pedestrian links around the city, retrofit the Trafalgar Centre as a multipurpose events centre and theatre and implement a comprehensive waste minimisation strategy.” Kerry: “Nelson needs a progressive city council that unifies diverse points of view and doesn’t let Nelson become a comprehensive retirement village. We need a safe pair of hands to take us into the future.” Gary Watson did not respond to the request for information.

Stoke businessman loses pub in quake B Andrew Board A Stoke businessman and his family survived the Christchurch earthquake unscathed last Saturday but one of his pubs was not so lucky, being reduced to a pile of bricks. Tony Crosbie, who owns two bars in Christchurch and two in Motueka, was in the devastated city for a 21st birthday with friends and his family when the quake struck. He says it was enough to have him convinced he was breathing his last breaths. “I thought it was all over, the day had come, because it was not stopping it kept getting worse and worse and it shook so badly I thought the roof was going to cave in.’’
Tony was staying at a hotel with family friends when the quake struck. He tried to visit his two central city bars the following morning but was denied access by police. His operations manager took some shocking photos of Churchills Tavern first thing in the morning after closing Tony’s other bar after 4am. “He was finishing up at the other bar in town when it happened. He shot round to Churchills after that and by 5am he had phoned me to say the bar was gone and he was heading for the hills.’’ Tony only bought the bar in December last year and had just finishing renovating the tavern at a cost of $250,000. He and says losing the pub was “gutting’’ but there was little he could do and was just happy that there were no deaths. “I’m fully insured for both but it’s the unknown really, everyone’s safe but we’re not sure where to from here. We are waiting for civil engineering report on whether Quake survivors from back left; they will bowl it or try to Leeanne and Kevin Krammer, Anna salvage it but looking at it I and Tony Crosbie. Front is Keaton think she’s buggered.’’ Wells, Tom Crosbie, Britany Kramer, He said his other bar, Bourbon Street, was having the Grace Crosbie.
Devestated: What’s left of Churchills Tavern in Christchurch which is owned by Stoke businessman Tony Crosbie. basement checked out for structural damage but did not suffer the same fate at Churchills. “But at the moment I have 15 staff who have not got anywhere to work, hopefully by Wednesday we will have a clearer idea of what the situation is and hopefully we can look after those staff.’’ Friend and Richmond business-
man Kevin Krammer was staying with his family at the same hotel and says he could not believe the destruction. “It just went on and on and kept getting worse and worse, the bed was like a bucking bull. If it had been the middle of the day, it would have killed people, no doubt about it. There would have been
people dead all over the place. It was terrifying for the kids.’’ Tony and his family drove home to Nelson on Saturday, cutting short their weekend holiday. “It was bloody good to come home; we really don’t know how lucky we are up here. Just 400km down the road it’s a much different story.’’

Blue Semptember launches onto Nelson streets With painted faces, a dozen Nelsonians looked as if they were ready to fight a war beside Braveheart’s William Wallace. But armed with only brochures it was a fight against prostate cancer that the group were geared up for. The Blue September supporters kicked off the prostate awareness campaign in Nelson last Friday taking to the streets to push the message of prostate checks for men. They spent Friday lunchtimes walking Nelson and Richmond streets handing our information packs and accepting donations. Blue September is the annual awareness campaign launched by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand to draw attention to prostate cancer in New Zealand – one of the biggest killers of New Zealand men. September is International Prostate Cancer Awareness month, so along with other countries in the world, Blue September encourages New Zealander’s to ‘get blue’ for the boys and face up to a disease that affects 2,500 men and kills 600 men a year, a figure greater than the road toll. Later this month some of the local volunteers will be at the Placemakers stand at the Home and Garden Show to talk about the campaign and on Sunday 19 September a walk will take place from Anzac Gardens to Tahunanui beach from 10.30am. At which all members of the public are invited to join in and help raise prostate cancer awareness.

MP welcomes Nelson Weekly
Community police officer, Senior Constable Greg Goessi, and police base volunteer Dawn Speakman outside the Victory police base in Toi Toi St, which is looking for more volunteers to help keep the base open for two hours during week days. Photo: Andrew Board.
Nelson is the best little city in the world. We have a fantastic climate, wonderful parks, great schools, a dynamic economy, a creative culture and strong community spirit. But we need to be continually focused on making Nelson even better. The Nelson Weekly is about finding out more about what has, and will be happening in this place we call home. It is a bold initiative during tough times and I wish it every success in creating jobs, keeping us connected and helping our economy recover.
Volunteers needed for Victory police base Volunteers are needed for Victory. The Victory Square community police base is open for two hours a day, five days a week and acts as a buffer between community concerns and police headquarters in Nelson. Senior Constable Greg Goessi says the base plays an important role in the community but is currently needing volunteers to help keep it open. Each volunteer works two hours a week, manning the phones and helping residents with any concerns they may have. Volunteer Dawn Speakman spends a day a
week at the base and says several more volunteers are needed to help out for a two hourspot each week. “It’s a really rewarding and interesting role and plays a very important part in the community.’’ Greg says anyone will be considered for the job. “We just want someone who has time available and has an interest in the community we are working in really. Doesn’t matter what age, just one day a week. There will a police clearance but the main stipulation is people wanting to help the community.’’
Dawn says it is also a great way to get to know people in Victory and having a police presence in the community makes people feel safe. A lot of the main concerns volunteers are faced with include lost property, trespass notices, reportings of dumped cars and giving advice. For more information call Victory police base on 548 2690.

Bright idea to keep scooter drivers safe Taking to the streets on a mobility scooter is about to become a whole lot safer thanks to a bright idea by Grey Power and businessman Robin Jordan. Owners of mobility scooters can now get a bright orange flag fitted to their scooter for free, increasing visibility to motorists and making users safer says Nelson Grey Power transport spokesman Addo Mulders.
Addo approached Robin, owner of Mobility 4 U, on Parere St, and FAV Mobile Solutions in Richmond, to see if he was keen to support the initiative and provide free flags as well as free fitting for owners of mobility scooters. Grey Power has been concerned about the number of mobility scooters on Nelson roads and footpaths that are not as visible to motorists as
they could be and this was a simple solution says Addo. “Some complaints about near misses with mobility scooters came to the attention of Nelson Grey Power so we were asked to find a person that could help us out and Robin was more than willing’’ The offer is open to all mobility scooter owners by simply visiting either store owned by Robin.

Africa holiday no walk in the park for Nelson group Doing an African safari typically involves a camera, khaki shirts and a quick getaway truck. Not for a group of Nelson holiday-makers who last month travelled part of the world’s wildest continent on their bikes. Margaret and Tony Gowans, Marie and Peter Hill, Kathryn and David Orange, Mike and Karen Murphy, Wendy and Kim Thorns and Barry and Debbie Johnston biked six hundred kilometres from just outside of Arusha in Tanzania to Zanzibar Island off Africa’s east coast as part of their winter holiday. They encountered snakes, giraffe, baboons and zebra on the paths they travelled, but it was the rough terrain that worried the Nelsonians more. “It was so tough, the roads were not in good shape so by the end of some days your neck, wrists and back were all sore,’’ says Marie. “We covered a lot of distance and were only on tar-seal for one day.’’ The tough days, which included an 11km uphill climb, were far outweighed by the views and encounters with locals says Margaret. “It was like biking through the heart of Africa really.
Pedal power: Margaret Gowans, left, and Marie Hill reflecting on their bike-ride through Africa and left; leading the pack on an African road last month. It was just amazing. One morning I woke up and I felt like I was in heaven, the view was so fantastic and the children will leave a lasting memory for everyone.’’ The adventure was organised by a Christchurch holiday cycle operator who has taken tours to South America, Europe and Asia before the African excursion. Both Margaret and Marie said they would love to go back and do another cycling holiday. “It’s such a great way to see the country, you are right up close and get to see things a normal holiday to
Africa wouldn’t,’’ says Margaret. Although most locals were happy to meet the group from Nelson there were a couple of occasions when they were the victim of rock throwers and one of the members in the group had to leave early after suffering a nasty fall. The scars from falling off their bikes have healed though and looking through their impressive collection of photos has given Margaret itchy feet again. “I can’t wait to have another biking challenge, you feel such a sense of achievement.’’

Mayor welcomes new newspaper “Congratulations on your initiative, I look forward to reading the first copy. I believe in competition and very best wishes and good luck to the paper, I wish it great success.’’ – Nelson Mayor, Kerry Marshall. Tracy Banner of the Sprig & Fern pours a pint of award-winning Doppelbock with Dave Barrett. Doppelbock was one of three Sprig beers that earned medals at the BrewNZ awards.
Local brewery revel in medal haul A panel of world class beer judges has confirmed what many Nelsonians have known for years – Sprig & Fern beers are good, really good. In fact the brewery came away from the Liquorland BrewNZ awards in Wellington last week with three medals, a gold, silver and bronze, thrilling the brewers. “It’s really humbling for a small brewery like us, we don’t like to sing and dance about how good we might be but this is pretty special. The criteria is really strict and it’s great for Nelson as well to know they have world class beer brewed in their city,’’ says co-owner Dave Barrett. The Sprig’s Bush Honey Strong Ale, due to go on tap at the four Sprig & Fern taverns this week, won the gold medal in the festive brew category while the Harvest Pilsner won a silver medal and
was just ten votes shy of winning the people’s choice award at the Beervana event, which is open to 1200 people for each of the four sessions at Wellington’s town hall. The popular Doppelbock won the bronze medal for the brewery. Co-owner Tracy Banner says each of the three awards, from the five beers entered by the brewery, is a massive achievement. “There were 448 entries with beers from the UK, Russia, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and only a third were given medals. To win a medal is world class, the difference between gold, silver and bronze is not big, it could be a really minor fault. But to win gold, it basically has to be perfect to what the guidelines say.’’

After admiring the impressive ruggedly handsome and natural looking Alpine timberframe homes in the United States, and then noticing the growing popularity of inexpensive square-style sleepouts around New Zealand, Brent from Plankville hatched an idea. He decided to design a wooden cabin for people who wanted a good looking feature for their property which would serve a practical purpose as a spare or extra room from $19,500. “As we want to stay focused on the milling and supply of our specialty timbers and services, we’ve joined forces with our friend Scott Davidson from Rockberry Homes, who will be in charge of manufacturing these great little cabins,” says Brent. Sally and Brent are looking forward to working with Scott as he shares their views on looking after their customers as much as possible and never compromising on quality. Plankville sell a range of popular timber products including flooring, decking, macrocarpa dog kennels and landscape materials, they will also look after all of your timber milling requirements, the best way to find out exactly how they can help is to call in for a chat at 101 Beach Road Richmond or phone 544 1993 between 8am-5pm Monday to Friday or check the website www.plankville.co.nz.

The two Nayland College mathematicians are currently three quarters of the way through a stage 1 University of Canterbury mathematics course. “The course equates to all of first year maths, for engineering or any other kind of mathematics course, so you can go on to level 200 maths straight away,” Tim said The course came about thanks to outstanding results as Year12’s in Level 3 calculus last year. “It was introduced to us by the head of maths Mr Walker, be-
cause we did really well in calculus last year. We were year 12’s so we had an extra year to fill.” In their most recent test, Tim received the top mark of 58 out of 60, with Jesse only half a mark behind. “There was a really weird thing with the last test, every test so far had a couple of really hard questions in it, this one seemed to be straight forward. “The other tests would have one question at the end where you just couldn’t wrap your head around it,” Jesse said. “Things like mean value theorem equations to try to prove that a route was in between two places.” Jesse explained that it only takes a tiny mistake in order to lose half a mark. “You can get half
mark for getting halfway there but without quite finding an answer.” Tim and Jesse both received 100% and 99% in the first test and are well on track to achieve a very high final grade. They clearly have a talent in the subject, but both of the boys made it clear it’s not something they’d do in their spare time. “It’s more looking and finding out things that I enjoy, sitting down and doing large amounts of maths probably isn’t that fun,” Jesse laughed. Next year Jesse will be doing a Bachelor of Science majoring in mathematics along with other science papers at Victoria University, while Tim is heading to the Netherlands to do chemical engineering.

The executive of a new merchant navy group formed at the Nelson Suburban Club last Friday is secretary/treasurer P (Kere) Graham and president Capt Gilbert Inkster with the New Zealand Red Ensign, or “Red Duster” flying in the background.
‘Red duster’ flys as Merchant Navy group formed Nelson men celebrated New Zealand’s first Merchant Navy Day by forming a new group and honouring those who gave their lives during World War II. The day, to be celebrated on September 3 each year, remembers the crucial work of the Merchant Navy’s war-time efforts. Sailing the ships that delivered troops, military equipment, fuel and vital food to our allies. The New Zealand
Merchant Navy traversed the world’s oceans in times of danger and in rough seas. The work of our merchant seamen was so essential that the Merchant Navy was effectively regarded as the fourth service alongside the Army, Navy and Air Force. Nelson men gathered with the blessing of Nelson RSA at the Suburban Club last Friday to look at ways it can further
raise awareness of the Merchant Navy in Nelson. It elected a committee and executive and plans to meet quarterly. Merchant seamen were civilians, but on the front line of the war. They faced the constant possibility of attack, and death in the freezing waters of the Atlantic or in the shark-infested waters of the Pacific. And this was indeed the fate of some New Zealand seafarers.

A normal week for the port after the flurry of activity during the fruit season and subsequent weeks. On 15 occasions vessels took advantage of the Ports Pilotage services and 15 other movements occurred with Pilot exempt Masters. It was good to see the Kakariki with her usual supply of fuel for Nelson and container vessels for the deliveries to importers and exporters. On two occasions I talked to individuals in a small boat or kayak about keeping clear of the vessels on berths. Remember a ship may start up or move off the berth at any time and frequently small vessels are hard to see. The bylaw states to keep clear by 50m . Please take care around the ships. On Friday the 3rd September it was my duty to hoist the red ensign to half mast in commemoration of the merchant sailors lost during the second world war and subsequent years. Friday 3 September is an auspicious date to commemorate their loss as it was on this day 1939 that Britain and France declared war on Germany after Germany’s invasion of Poland. On Thursday after a public hearing of submissions made in regard to the new Navigation Safety by-laws by the Council Hearing Panel, the process of enacting the new bylaws took one further step to completion. The most recent “travellers” group at Nayland College, pictured above, is not actually going anywhere. Running for the second year at the college, the programme is for Year 9 students and helps young people deal with change. Travelling is a metaphor for life and the students gain skills in self-es-
teem, expressing themselves, developing vocabulary for emotions and accepting that challenges in life can help us grow. This term the group are all boys and run by Nayland’s male councillor John Glazier. Head of Counselling, Linda McDougall says travellers is a well-researched pro-
gramme of one hour each week for eight weeks that looks at life as a journey. “It’s something that would benefit all year 9 students and we put through as many as we can.” This term’s Travellers will be travelling together for the rest of the term with John at the wheel.
Hot Pink Bits back by popular demand Back by popular demand after her last sell out show- you won’t want to miss Penny Ashton performing Hot Pink Bits! Penny is back to perform her hilarious one woman show for two nights only at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco this Friday and Saturday. Hot Pink”, garnered reviews such as ‘… a potty mouthed Pam Ayres” (Metro, Edinburgh) and “I found myself lap dancing on a table with eight strangers” (Sunday Mail, Adelaide). So it should be no surprise that her award nominated show Hot Pink Bits promises to uncover interesting tit bits about the international sex industry delivered as only the inimitable Penny can- singing, dancing and pontificating on such interesting subjects that we have all wanted to know but have been too scared to ask., such as “Do phone sex operators get RSI?”, and “Do people really have kinky sex?”, All performed in the best possible taste by Miss Hot Pink resplendent in her hot pink corset and fishnets. How can you resist a show that has a telephone ringing to be answered by Miss Hot Pink in a slow, smoky, sultry, phone sex voice “ Hello, how exactly can Miss Hot Pink Bits help you today...?” to be closely followed by an exasperated, impatient, petulant daughter voice, “Mum, I keep telling you not to ring me at work! Yes I am eating properly…” Reviews for Hot Pink Bits give an idea of what to expect. “This show is hot, horny and hilarious. It is the funniest show this reviewer has seen so far. It will be very hard to top” (Adelaide Theatre Guide) Many were disappointed they missed the show last time it was in town,.. Penny Ashton performing Hot Pink Bits is a show definitely not to be missed!

The way we were A focus on our area and its history
Alan Turley Normally stories about horses that set world records begin with an introduction that it was no ordinary horse. In this case just the opposite applied. Wairoa Belle was a very ordinary horse. Wairoa Belle was an aged grey mare owned by a Nelson timber cartage operator, Leo Berkett. In 1919 he had acquired her from a local clergyman as a hack for use with his gig. The reverend gentleman had used her as his hack for his parish visitation, but she did have good pacing blood in her on the side of her sire, Dictator. On local roads, Leo Berkett found that Wairoa Belle acquitted herself well against the horses of other gig owners. He decided to enter her in the 1920 meeting of the Nelson Jockey Club, which included harness races. Both Leo and Wairoa Belle were complete novices at harness racing. On the first day of the meeting, Wairoa Belle ran without any success. However, Leo took some sound advice and with the aid of a piece of string, made some effective adjustments to her hopples. The next day Wairoa Belle ran a fine race in the one and a half mile Wakefield handicap and led the fifteen-horse
field all the way to win by two lengths. The time for the race was a modest 3 min 59 secs. She paid the biggest dividend in New Zealand racing history-and it is believed in world racing history-of 1033 pounds and 5 shillings ($2067.00), a staggering sum when it is considered that the average weekly wage at the time was less than 10 pounds. Leo Berkett himself, did not have a penny on Wairoa Belle, and only received the stake money of 55 sovereigns (about 60 pounds). The reason for the high dividend-there was only one punter on Wairoa Belle. He was a local grain and seed merchant. S.C (Chummy) Levien who had purchased only a single ticket, because he “did not like to see it start without anyone giving it a chance.” Levien kept the 1000 pounds and gave Leo the balance, 33 pounds and 5 shillings-big money in those days. In her first race meeting, the aged mare, Wairoa Belle, forged for herself a place in New Zealand racing history. As far as is known, she did not have any further success on the track, but Leo Berkett, her owner, certainly did. Leo Berkett went on to become a legendary figure in harness racing in New Zealand. With his two sons, Noel and Colin, the Berkett family dominated the New Zealand harness racing scene for two

Leo Berkett with Wairoa Belle in 1919. decades from the late 1940’s to the early 1960’s. Leo owned and drove many of New Zealand’s top trotters, including the mighty Highland Fling. Highland Fling, trained by Leo, set a world two mile record and won two consecutive New Zealand trotting cups as well as many other major races. His career was bought to an abrupt end by a small broken bone in a foot just as he was about to embark on an American campaign.
Comparisons are set to be odious and a comparison between Wairoa Belle and Highland Fling would be just that. The one thing they had in common is that, together with Leo Berkett, they both set world records. Notwithstanding if Highland Fling was the pinnacle of Leo Berkett’s career, it was Wairoa Belle that signaled the beginning of his career, in an extraordinary and unprecedented manner.

Makos manager on top of her game Tasman Makos manager Jenelle Strickland will once again be sideline at Trafalgar Park this Sunday as the team aims to continue its unbeaten run at the newly developed ground. She talks to Nelson Weekly about game day in our new series, Your People at Work. Game day is pretty full-on for me, I’ll come down to the park about 9.30 and meet up with the assistant manager, Nipper (Brett Thornalley), and the head trainer Simon (Thomas) just to make sure we have our gear sorted. At 10 o’clock I meet all the players at the Aloha Lodge, where we base ourselves, and just make sure they have all turned up. We then go for our pre-match meal at Smugglers – about four hours before kickoff – they have a lot of mashed potatoes, pasta and chicken, that sort of thing. After the meal we go back to the Aloha Lodge and I help with any questions the players might have, making sure they are going into the right numbered jerseys, all that kind of stuff. I make sure I have a team list ready to go and that it’s all up to date and that there has not been any injuries since the day before, just all that kind of little nitty, gritty paperwork stuff. Then I make sure the bus turns up on time to pick everyone up and bring them to the ground. When I get to the ground I meet the match manager, opposition manager, ref ’s and guys from Sky TV to give them our team list. There are moments of intensity throughout the day, I find when I get to Aloha Lodge everyone is quite relaxed and it’s quite jovial. Then there’s a moment where it becomes really serious before they hop on the bus to get to the ground. It’s dead quiet on the bus, no one talks and most keep their headphones on and it stays like that until they drop their stuff off in the changing rooms, then they seem a bit more relaxed again. Just before kickoff it’s dead quiet in the changing room until the coaches have their last moments to talk to them, then they are gone and I hear the players geeing themselves up before they go on. That moment is exciting because
Tasman Mako manager Jenelle Strickland at the teams Nelson home, Trafalgar Park ahead of its next home game against Otago this Sunday. Photo: Andrew Board. you’ve done everything you possibly can and now it’s just the moment of it all happening. During the game my job is to make sure I’m keeping a record of all points that are scored, for us and the opposition, what time they are scored, who scored it, how it was scored and how many points it’s worth. I also do sub-controlling so the coaches radio down to me who it is that they want to go on, I confirm it and write out the card to give to the sub controller and write in on my own sheet. It’s actually quite a ring-m-
roll, although it may look smooth from the outside, it’s actually quite a panicked moment because they can give you like three people to swap and they want them on as soon as they can and that’s not necessary going to happen. Being on the sideline during a game is exciting, I’ve always enjoyed watching rugby but I don’t feel like I actually watch rugby when I’m on the sideline because there is so much other stuff going on and it goes a lot quicker than it ever would if you were watching it at home. But it’s cool, especially when
awesome stuff happens; it’s really exciting because everyone gets pretty wound up. It gets a bit busy again for me when the full time whistle goes; I make sure Jacko (captain Chris Jack) is wearing his Golden Edge cap for the post-match interview, that’s part of our sponsorship deal with them. Then I go into the changing room and write up what time they have to be showered and ready by, when the coaches and captain will do their after-match speech to them, what time the bus leaves, all that kind of stuff. Then I get my gear ready, get the match report signed off by the ref, I get changed into my number one’s, then I start rarking them up and start saying `hurry up, you’ve got ten minutes’, doing all those lovely motherly things. Then it’s making sure they are all back on the bus, my day honestly doesn’t finish until I’m in my car on my way home, I’m consistently either fielding questions or organising something. The only time I feel I get treated differently as a female manager is that I have to ask if there is an opportunity to have a shower in a different area. These guys have always had a female in their environment, so I find them very respectful. Disciplining players can be hard, before I was manager I had the role here as personal development manager, so going from a position where I was there to support players to then actually discipline someone was kind of a little bit weird the first time I did it. But I’ve only really had to discipline for lateness, nothing really major to be honest, nothing juicy. I have a moment every day where I say to myself `man I love my job’. I’m lucky because I’m doing a job that I always wanted to do and it’s turned out that it actually agrees with me.

Nayland College create slice of footballing history Phillip Rollo The Nayland College 1st XI has consistently reached the latter stages of the Lotto Premier National Secondary School Football Championship, but this year they came one step closer to clinching the title. For the first time in the school’s history they made the final, losing 3-2 in extra time to Palmerston North Boys High School. “It was just one of those days that we just didn’t take our chances,” coach Brendan Crichton said. Striker Gagame Feni had a chance to win the match but hit the crossbar with the final kick of the game. “It would’ve been a screamer of a goal, it’s such a fine line, we were a piece of woodwork away from a national title.” After a controversial exit at the hands of Sacred Heart last year, a rematch in the group stages wasn’t the headliner they were expecting as both teams had qualified for the knockout phases before they met. Nay-
land defeated Shirley Boys 6-0, Tauranga 4-2 before losing Sacred Heart 2-1. Christchurch Boys High School were next up for Nayland and it was last years golden boot winner, Feni, who scored the winner, the match finishing 1-0. After beating Christchurch in the quarter final, Nayland then faced a daunting task against perennial favourites Mt Albert Grammar. Coached by Kevin Fallon, MAGS were looking to win their third national title in a row. James Hockley was shown a red card early on for Nayland, but they still dominated the game, thrashing MAGS 4-1. “I think someone was smiling on us that day. We just out passioned them, we were down to 10 men, but it felt like we had 13 out there. I just can’t think of a time when MAGS were beaten by such a convincing score line, it would be ten if not 20 years since they’ve lost by that sort of margin.” Former Nayland College student Jeremy Brockie was one
The Nayland College first 11 before the national football final against Palmerston North Boys High School last Friday. of the first to congratulate the boys. “Just good luck and that he couldn’t believe we could make it to the final.” Before the final Crichton passed some inspirational words of his own to the team. “The big thing for us was trying to create our own history and history for the school, getting our school’s name on that trophy, because it would be on there forever. We were pretty heartbro-
ken to say the least.” Nayland has a big Nelson Suburbs influence and Crichton was quick to praise stars of both teams. “You’d like to say it was a team effort but Adam Smith was just phenomenal. To get seven goals out of him is half the reason we went as far as we did. I knew our strength was in our attack, I was pretty certain with Jerry [Donga], Alex [Ridsdale], Smithy and Gagame, that there wouldn’t be a team in New
Zealand that would have four attackers like them, they might have one or two, but not four.” Although he’s disappointed in the loss, Crichton can’t wait till next year. “If one thing it’s given me a bit of hunger to go back and win the title where before I didn’t really think it was attainable. I still think it’s one of the greatest performances in Nayland’s sporting history.”

Tigers take title with depleted squad The Tahuna Tigers has won its junior football grade, despite playing most of the season with two players down. The Tigers wrapped up the Nelson Bays Football 14th grade on Saturday with one game remaining in the season, but has played most of the year with only nine players, two short of the regulation 11 fielded by all other teams. In past years coach Paul Brown has not minded the small squad because all the boys turned up each week. But this year, illness and other commitments dropped team numbers to as low as six some
weeks. “We have had a couple of younger guys in other Tahuna teams come and help us out from week to week and I was pretty pleased seeing them wonder over that day, it would have been difficult with only six,’’ says Paul. Playing a couple of players short of a full team has in fact had benefits for his players, says Paul. “I’d like to think they are better because of it, I’ve said to the boys you get out of football what you put in so they need to keep working hard when you don’t have as many as the other teams.’’ The players do not seem to mind either: “at least they know they will get a game each week,’’ says Paul. The Tigers won the top 14th grade division with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Suburbs in Tahuna and will round out its season against Richmond this Saturday.

Tennis a hit at Stoke schools Three thousand school children are being served a taste of tennis this month as the Tennis in Schools programme hits Nelson for a fourth straight year. Nelson Bays Tennis Association launched the programme, with support from the Haven Sports Trust, in 2007 and has seen around 10,000 kids pick up a racquet and have a go at one of the world’s premier sports. Last week it was the turn for schools in the Stoke area, including Stoke School, Nayland, Nelson Christian Academy and Birchwood for a qualified tennis coach to visit its year 3 and 4 students. Tennis Development Officer for Nelson Bays, Lynnie Nevin, says the programme is fantastic for the sport and for schools.
“It’s a great opportunity for children to try the sport in a fun games-based situation. We certainly get huge numbers turning out to club open days because of it and that’s our goal – to link schools, coaches and clubs.’’ This week the programme moves to Nelson city and will visit Hampton St, Enner Glynn, Central, St Joseph’s, Victory, Clifton Terrace and Hira Schools’. As a further incentive, every child, aged 5 to 13, who attends a free open day automatically goes in the draw to win a $650 Wilson Tennis prize pack. There is also second prize pack of $100 and third prize of $50. To find out when your school is having its open day at the local tennis club please visit www.tennisnelson.co.nz .
