Nelson Classic Car Museum is one of New Zealand’s top private collections. They have cars from every era – all in mint condition. Come for a wander through and maybe you’ll spot a car your grandad had, and the kids will recognise cars from their favourite movies. Sareena Fraser at the museum says: “We love our cars! Since reopening the museum in September, we‘ve made a few changes – all the cars have been re-polished and re-ordered, so there’s more room to admire them from every angle. We’re getting a real mix of locals and visitors coming through – everyone loves it.” There are more than 150 cars on display – from iconic Fords and Cadillacs, the sleekest Jaguars and Ferraris, the coolest Zephyrs and Triumphs, the much-loved Volkswagens and Morris, through to the ever-strange DeLorean and the Excalibur. Stay a while at the Little Engine Café for a range of fresh and tasty madeon-the-premises meals and snacks. There’s also the Museum Store for a superb range of local and New Zealand-made ceramics, jewellery, glass, books, mementos, prints and more. www.nelsonclassiccarmuseum.nz Open 7 days 10-4pm

Helping Nelson’s nature thrive There’s always something exciting happening at Natureland. ‘We’re constantly engaged in conservation work, and currently have seven South Island Kaka here as part of the Breed for Release programme,” says Natureland Wildlife Trust manager, Ruth Seabright. “We’re paired them up and are hopeful to see nesting behaviour and offspring in the near future.” Ruth says they also have five yellow-crowned kakariki chicks which hatched just before Christmas. The chicks will be ready to fledge in approximately 40 days. Next door to them are a pair of bellbirds who have just started laying their first clutch. “Then, over in the reptile area we have seven tuatara hatchlings. Although they are a year old now, they grow very slowly, and continue growing for 35 years, so they’re still teeny tiny babies and very cute to see. It’s really exciting to be successfully breeding our beautiful and unique native species.” Natureland also have two new domestic arrivals, a baby alpaca born onsite last week, and a baby Anglo-Nubian goat who is arriving this week. Celebrating the music of a legend The Howard Morrison Quartet Take Two is touring throughout New Zealand this February with a memorable two hour show celebrating and recreating the magic of the original Howard Morrison Quartet. The original band is considered this country’s most successful show band and an entertainment phenomenon in their heyday that helped to establish the New Zealand entertainment industry. Merging family-friendly music with unique New Zealand humour, the Howard Morrison Quartet toured constantly through New Zealand and overseas during the 50’s and 60’s, but reformed regularly throughout the subsequent decades to remain hugely popular. Its charismatic leader, the iconic Sir Howard Morrison, also enjoyed a stellar solo career over many decades plus the love and respect of his country for the huge amount he gave back to the community. Timed to mark the 10 year anniversary of Sir Howard’s death, the show will bring

the old quartet back to life through the talents of the next generation led by Sir Howard’s talented son Howard Jnr, a successful singer in his own right who has performed on the concert stage from a very young age, including with the original quartet. He is also a leading figure in Kapa Haka and fronted his outdoor adventure television series for many years. There is none better than Sir Howard’s son and namesake to reform a new quartet in honour of the old. All superb entertainers, The Howard Morrison Quartet Take Two, featuring Russell Harrison, Chris Powley and Jack Grace alongside Howard Morrison Jnr, can perfectly fill the void left behind by the original quartet, introducing a new generation to the special mix of impressive vocals and family-friendly fun that was their hallmark. The quartet’s Nelson show is at the Theatre Royal on 16 February 2021. Tickets are available through Eventfinda. Suitable for all ages.

Take the plunge at ‘The Gorge’

Have an adventure close to home

Cable Bay Adventure Park is Nelson’s adventure destination. “A lot of visitors come to Nelson over summer, but it can be quite a big trek out to the Abel Tasman, so being only 15 minutes from the city centre, we’re an easy place to visit,” says owner Richard Ussher. “Our Skywire is definitely our key attraction – it’s a real shot of adrenaline flying high above the forest canopy. Plus, we offer free access to some great mountainbiking trails (rental bikes available), and a licensed café where you can enjoy a wide range of local beer, wine and Pomeroy’s coffee.” Other fun options include the quad bikes, amphibious argo, paintball, e-bikes and there’s even eels to feed. “Over summer bookings are pretty essential, to avoid disappointment.” Richard says Cable Bay Adventure Park is the place to come and spend an hour or a whole day, where you can be catered for all in the one place. The Archery Park, which provides a range of archery experiences, is also located onsite. Cable Bay Adventure Park is open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm. To find out more, visit www.cablebayadventurepark.com.

Photo: Spoke Situated deep in the Wairoa Valley, 'The Gorge’ mountainbike park is owned and operated by the Nelson Mountain Bike Club and is home to well over 70km of hand-built mountain bike trails that run through a lush native and beech forest environment. The trails at The Gorge are sublime and have to be experienced to be fully appreciated. The grades run from 3 to 6 and there is more riding than anyone can handle in a day. You decide where to go, how fast or slow you want to ride, when you want to stop, and which shuttle pick-up point will work best for you. You must book a shuttle seat in advance so as not to miss out. The Gorge is more than just mountainbiking, with two fantastic, comfortable and scenic accommodation options available. You can either stay before and/or after riding or you can simply enjoy a getaway with comfort in the mountain tops to chill out for a few days. Riding in Nelson is not complete without a couple of days at The Gorge. Book www.thegorge.nz

Coconut and fruit ice blocks Vanilla Ice Cream These nutrient filled ice-blocks are the perfect summer refreshment filled with colourful fruit and coconut water.

Nothing beats vanilla ice cream on a hot Summer day.

Total Time 10 min Prep 10 min Cook 0 min Serves 8 Difficulty Easy Ingredients Fresh strawberries - 60 g, finely chopped Fresh raspberries - 60 g, finely chopped Fresh blueberries - 60 g, finely chopped Kiwifruit - 60 g, finely chopped Mango - 60 g, finely chopped Coconut water - â…” cup(s), (160ml) Instructions Divide fruit between eight Âź-cup (60ml) capacity iceblock moulds (see tip below). Pour in coconut water, leaving a 5mm gap at the top. Insert iceblock sticks (tops). Freeze for 4 hours or overnight. Serve. TIPS: Use a mix of strawberries, kiwifruit, mango, raspberries and blueberries but you can use any fruit you like. Iceblock moulds can vary in size. Just ensure that you add enough fruit so the stick is covered when inserted, while leaving a 5mm gap at the top to allow the liquid to expand.

Ingredients 300ml thick cream 300ml milk 1 vanilla bean, split 6 egg yolks 175g Caster Sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Method Place the cream and milk in a saucepan. Scrape in the vanilla seeds and add the bean, too. Bring to the boil, then turn off the heat and set aside for 10 minutes to infuse. Place the egg yolks, Castor sugar and vanilla extract in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until pale. Carefully pour the milk over, then return to a

clean saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring, for about five minutes until it is slightly thickened and coats the back of a wooden spoon. (This simple custard forms the basis of a classic ice-cream recipe.) Set aside to cool, then refrigerate for 30 minutes. Place custard in a plastic container in the freezer until frozen at the edges. Remove from freezer. Beat with an electric beater. Re-freeze. Repeat this process two more times. (Alternatively, churn in an ice-cream machine according to the manufacturer's directions.)

Road changes update Why are we doing it? This is the busiest roundabout in Tasman District, with about 17,000 vehicles going through a day and this number is only predicted to grow. This creates congestion during peak hours and makes it very difficult for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the roundabout safely. This work was completed prior to Christmas. Some further work on the water supply will be needed in January as part of Stage Two. As the water network is at a higher risk of contamination when we work on the mains, the Richmond water supply will be temporarily treated with chlorine to be sure it stays safe to drink. Thanks for your patience We understand that Stage Two of this work will be disruptive, especially with other construction also underway, so we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. We’ll be working closely with the other projects to minimise disruption and to keep things running as smoothly and safely as possible. We’ll keep you updated as our project progresses. Contacts Construction queries or reporting urgent issues: Fulton Hogan 03 547 9789 General queries, call Tasman District Council: 03 543 8400 Email: projects@tasman.govt.nz

STAGE TWO SECTION ONE

• Putting extra lanes on the roundabout to cater for increased traffic as our region grows.

New options are in place to accommodate traffic while work is underway, shown on the bottom diagram. They include:

• Making it safer for cyclists and pedestrians (especially the many school children in the area) by adding raised crossings.

• A temporary roundabout at Templemore / Salisbury for traffic detoured from Champion Road, via Kareti and Templemore Drives.

• Taking the chance to make improvements to the water supply and other services at the same time.

• A new road to Champion Road West – left turn only from Richmond Deviation (SH6) – to access the businesses in this area (Active Explorers, Caltex, Crossbow Coffee Roasters, Eddyline, Hubbers Flooring, Jennian Homes, Moxini, Premier Services, Raeward Fresh, Richmond Aquatic Centre, Zink) who are all open as usual. See our website, tasman.govt.nz/ projects for diagrams showing the easiest ways to access the businesses from each direction.

CHANGES AT THE ROUNDABOUT Work at the roundabout will be done in four sections. The top diagram shows the layout for Section One in place from the week starting 11 January. Two key things to remember during construction:
