JOHNSTON ASSOCIATES Winners are grinners: From left is Guyton’s supervisor Teena Ehau, Shop ‘n Win winner Michelle Wright with family Peter, Jack, Georgia, Tom and Janice Glassey. Michelle was the overall winner of $3000 cash in the Shop ‘n Win promotion.
Richmond family wins Shop ‘n Win Michelle Wright never thought buying fish would be so rewarding. But thanks to a purchase at Guyton’s in Richmond Mall, Michelle won $3000 cash in Waimea Weekly’s Shop ‘n Win promotion. “Oh my god, are you serious,” was her reaction when called by Waimea Weekly just before Christmas. Shop ‘n Win is a five week promotion run in in conjunction with 40 local businesses where one shopper wins $3000 cash and the business that was shopped at wins $1000.
More than 35,000 entries were filled out for the annual promotion run by Waimea Weekly. Publisher Steve Page says he was thrilled to hear Michelle’s reaction to the win and says shortly Nelson shoppers will have the opportunity to also win thousands of dollars when Nelson Weekly runs a similar competition in 2011. “Michelle is the perfect winner, husband with a couple of children, it’s great to see a family win cash.” Michelle, of Richmond, says the win was a great way to end the year. “It’s awesome, I’m so happy. I can’t believe it.”

Thomas and Beetina Adler of Tahuna with their Clockwise from left, Colin Hosking, Mark Christison, Dave Lewis children Yannis and Lileth at Busch Reserve. and Dan Saunders enjoy a game of novelty volleyball in Lee Valley
Nelson rivers provide stunning swimming holes You can discover the beauty of the Lee Valley by turning left into River Road at the main intersection at Brightwater. Just a few minutes drive takes you into one the loveliest river valleys in the region. The Lee River has always been a favourite with picnickers and swimmers and there are a couple of Council reserves that give you the room to stay and play. Meads Reserve is tucked away just over the Meads Bridge. Turn right over the bridge to enter this reserve. The hilly terrain means there are plenty of lovely little spots to park up for a picnic with privacy. A toilet, rubbish bins
and picnic tables and platforms have all been provided for your convenience. It’s right alongside the river so it’s very popular for swimming too. While much of Meads Recreation Reserve is in grass there are still a good number of native trees to look out for including a small area of matai, totara, kahikatea, beech forest at the upstream end of the reserve. If you want somewhere with a bit more open space, continue up Lee Valley Road just a few hundred metres past the Meads Road Bridge and you’ll find Firestones Reserve on the left. This reserve covers
a couple of broad terraces between the river and the road. On the top terrace there’s plenty of room for a game of cricket or touch or just to spread out for a family picnic. Follow the track down onto the lower terrace for easy access to some of the best swimming holes in the Lee River. There are picnic tables, platforms and metal barbecue stands for use. There are plenty of shady spots alongside the river with plenty of native vegetation thriving. Access to the river is good along this lower part of the reserve, making it the perfect spot for a swim.

Aotearoa’s hottest acts are gathering again for Nelson’s premier all-ages music concert, Summer Six. Headlined by legendary rockers Head Like a Hole, the concert features a complete range of genres so everyone can enjoy the party on January 8 at the recently revamped Trafalgar Park. HLAH reunited in 2009 after a nine year hiatus and will bring an old school metal influence that was missing last year. “Last year that was the one thing that people asked for because we didn’t have a full on rock band,” says organiser Dave White. “They’re back with a vengeance.” Crowd favourite Katchafire are back for more, along with Digital UK, undoubtedly a heavyweight in the UK drum and bass scene. Psychedelic band Phoenix Foundation and electro pop group Minuit bring a depth of creativity to the stage. Phoenix Foundation were winners of Best Group at the New Zealand Music Awards for their album ‘Buffalo.’ Minuit deliver a distinctive arsenal of indie infused pop melodies that have gained the band acclaim from fans and industry heavyweights alike. The shift to Trafalgar Park means facilities will be be able to handle demand. The stadium will also create shade and shelter if needed. There will be plenty of licensed bars and foodstalls, so ID is required. With over 250 tickets sold in the first week alone, you’d be better get in quick says Dave.

Summer movies, the perfect way to watch classic movies You’ve got a telly and a sofa in the lounge, right? So why would you want to go and sit in the park to watch a movie that first screened when your nana was a kid? “I don’t know the answer but I do know
that classic movies under the stars are getting more popular every year,” says event organizer Antony Hodgson. “I guess it’s the attraction of a family event that returns us to a simpler time and put us back in touch with the people who live in our neighbourhood.” This year there’s a new bigger screen for the movies – specially made locally and it’s inflatable! “Having an inflatable screen means it’s more portable and safer too,” Antony says.
“Where else can you see a movie on a big screen for just a two bucks – and enjoy a free Amplified Picnic with music, storytelling and games before the show, at seven of the 15 screenings.” Summer Movies have a new and very appropriate sponsor this year, SolarCity, who will be providing some special lighting to guide people safely from the venues at the end of the evening. So what’s coming up on the big outdoor screen? Pack a picnic (BYO OK), bring a rug or your couch, wear warm clothes or
your pyjamas and pocket a torch to light your way home. Movie will not screen if it is raining. If the weather is doubtful please txt: Is it on? to 021 776623 after 7:30pm. Amplified Picnics are from 6pm preceding the Summer Movies. Amplified Picnic is FREE, remember to bring gold coins if staying for the movie. Summer in Nelson events are presented by the Nelson City Council as a celebration for locals and an added attraction for visitors.

Richmond bird walk has fills hills with sounds of native birds Richmond Native Bird Recovery (NBR) member Neil Page says the numbers of birds across several species have increased noticeably over the past five years in the
area of the Richmond foothills his group has been trapping pests. “There’s a feed station outside my house (in the Jimmy Lee Creek area of upper Richmond) and I have noticed great increases in the numbers of tuis, bellbirds and silver eyes in particular.” NBR runs a programme to trap and kill pests – including rodents, opposums and wasps - in an area of the Richmond foothills from Reservoir Creek (running down past the Aquatic Centre) to Will’s Gully at the top of Hart’s Road.
Richmond Native Bird Recovery member Neil Page. Eleven species of birds can be seen from the bird hide.
Neil says, “In five years we’ve had 2400 kills – 1000 rats, 1000 mice, 161 opposums, 117 hedgehogs which eat ground nested eggs and compete with the birds for food, 26 stoats and four wasp nests. This has greatly enhanced the birds’ ability to breed and has encouraged them to stay in this area.” To prove the positive effects of the pest control programme and to serve as a quiet and spectacular observation point, NBR has recently built a bird hide on the side of the track in Jimmy Lee Creek. Neil says, “Eleven bird species can be seen from the hide including bellbirds, tuis and

Old time attractions coming to Higgins Park steam museum
There have been several changes at the Pigeon Valley Steam worked. Museum in recent times making it all the more fascinating The name Higgins Park has been given to the grounds of the for people who appreciate the way our forefathers lived and complex and is home to the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum, Rover Car Club, Nelson Vintage Engine & Machinery Club, and a new group in the last two years, the Historic Transport Museum Trust. Collected together within this complex is a wide range of machinery and exhibits from days gone by. Here you can enjoy working and static steam engines, vintage tractors and small engines, many of the old trucks that were a part of Nelson’s earlier years, military vehicles, the facinating Rural Life Museum building, and an old time working sawmill. On open days, rides
are given behind a Traction Engine, and also on a Rail Jigger around the Bush Tramway. The Park is always open and is a wonderful spot for a picnic and a wander around, and the children will enjoy the playground. Over the summer holiday period the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum is open every day and ‘On Steam’ on January 2, to coincide with the Wakefield Market Day, and again on January 16. Entry fee during ‘on steam’ days is $5 per adult, free for children and on other days a gold coin donation is appreciated. The annual two-day Vintage Machinery Show will be on Nelson Anniversary Weekend, January 29/30. For those locals and visitors who will be in the region in March a trip to the Logging day at Higgins Park is a unique experience, well worth seeing.

Head out to Rabbit Island for a day on the beach
Rabbit Island offers holiday-makers plenty of options with its large expanse of beach and relatively safe, shallow swimming waters. Pictured above the O’Fee family of Richmond with their Blokart they are from left; Kathy and Grant O’Fee, Willaim Mawhinney, Caroline O’Fee (in the kart), Averil Mawhinney and Tom Scott.
Rabbit Island is the largest of a group of sandy islands lying in the Waimea Estuary at the head of Tasman Bay. Dogs are allowed but only just beyond the caretakers’ house inside the main gate and not on beach. Along its seaward side there is more than eight kilometers of safe sandy beach. Much of the island is covered in pine plantations. The Tasman District Council has set aside a large area of land adjacent to the beach as a public reserve. Barbecues, dressing sheds and toilets are provided to cater for the many visitors who come here to relax throughout the year and during the peak holiday season. This is the largest picnic area in the district, and many local organisations find it an ideal place to hold their annual staff picnics. The beach and public reserves are open for use during daylight hours only throughout the year and may be closed during times of high fire risk. Revenue from forestry enables the Council to provide and maintain the public facilities. No other commercial activity of any kind is permitted. The beach is a vast stretch of pure sand with a relatively safe and shallow surf to swim, kayak, windsurf or just splash around in. Nevertheless please take care in the water and watch the kids at all times because even the most tranquil of seas pose a potential hazard if you’re not vigilant and sensible. Apart from these beach activities, the island caters for many other forms of outdoor recreation.
There is a perimeter road just above the beach around most of the island, popular with local walking groups. The public are not permitted to enter the forestry plantations. Local artists and photographers enjoy recording the beautiful views of the inlet and mountains, especially on a calm sunny winters day. The tidal waters also provide sustenance for many different sea birds, including the white heron and royal spoonbill. Surf-casting can be productive from the front beach. Rabbit Island is well worth a day out for all the family.

NELSON HARNESS RACES
Friday 7 and Sunday 9 January
www.nhrc.co.nz Summer Festival Racing returns to Richmond Park with the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s exciting two day meeting on Friday and Sunday, January 7 & 9. Bumper crowds are expected once again with the huge contingent of racing fans from the top of the South Island boosted by several hundred Canterbury holiday-makers still enjoying the charms of our province. Each year this local summer meeting – one of only two meetings held during the year so always eagerly anticipated by live racing action-starved fans – attracts more patrons than the year before. This is a credit to the national governing body, Harness Racing NZ who are continually busy implementing
promotional and operational changes to enhance the sport as a family attraction, and the local committee which works so hard to organize this wonderful occasion of competitive racing, fun and a wide range of entertainments. Graeme Rogerson who excels in thoroughbred racing – having won a Melbourne Cup and most of the richest races in New Zealand - calls harness racing his hobby and he sang the praises of both the Nelson Harness Racing committee and the Owners, Trainers & Breeders Assn. members who support these meetings by running qualifying trials and workouts all year round. “These people, unpaid in most instances, are
the backbone of the NZ racing industry which employs thousands of people and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in overseas revenue,” says Graeme. With full fields of proven performers and up and coming stars of the future, top drainers and drivers, the action at Richmond Park is as exciting as harness racing anywhere in the country. With trainers like the Butt family coming from Canterbury with their proven and promising horses local patrons are privileged to see horses begin and further their careers here, some going on to dazzling stardom. Local harness racing supporter Albert Aubrey who is enjoying great success at present with the family’s exciting pacer Alchemy says, “I’d love to see him win a Nelson Cup but he’s had too many wins to qualify now and the standing start might not suit him. The Aubrey family have tasted such success with two wins in the past by their horse Apache. There will be 10 races on each of the two days of the Nelson Harness races. The highlight will be the Stella Artois Nelson Cup on the Sunday but patrons should make every effort to get a sneak preview on Friday when the Prelude runs. Sunday form at Nelson usually reflects first day performances with winners, natural improvers and ‘black bookers’ usually paying dividends. The big screen on the infield for the benefit of spectators will be in operation on the Sunday. Spokesperson for the Nelson Harness Racing Club, committee member and past president Bill Monk says the club is appreciative of the continuing support of corporate and other business sponsors and is pleased “this year we’ve picked up new sponsors who have never been involved before. This ‘new blood’
is vital to the growth and well-being of our local meetings and is an expression of their faith in our industry’s health and future.” Sunday’s attendance has been boosted by an incredible 330 corporate group bookings. Bill says, “One of our big promotional focuses this year has been encouraging corporates to make this occasion their Christmas function and the response has been wonderful.” The Lindauer marquee will grace the infield on both days, open to the general public for sales of bubbles on Friday but reserved for ticket holders on Sunday. Any groups wanting to book tables in the Lindauer marquee and guarantee themselves a bird’s eye view of the spectacular Fashion in the Field parade on Sunday should phone Chris Butler at CB Marketing on 5468269. With regard to the sale and supply of liquor situation Bill says, “This will probably be the last meeting here where the public can bring their own alcohol on to the course. The huge Ellerslie racing carnival Fashion in the Field will be staged on Sunday, the second day of the meeting. Beauties like is also stopping the BYO provision Katie King, Lauren Lewis and Chanel Skinner add glamour to the racing action this summer and it’s all about host responsibility. “As hosts we want to have more control over alcohol consumption and the last thing we want to hear is that someone has got into any sort of bother at or after the races because they’ve had too much to drink.”

www.nhrc.co.nz As mentioned the Nelson Harness Racing Club organizes its meetings with a strong focus on the family. Accordingly there will be a huge range of free attractions to keep the kids amused and supervised as required. These include pony rides, bouncy castles, face painting and videos under responsible supervision and the popular Kids Go Racing programme on both days. Of course there is a range of great food available and some lovely peace-
ful and shady areas for those who choose to pack a picnic. Racing begins at 2.17pm on Friday for the twilight programme and at the earlier time of 12.15pm on Sunday in time for a late afternoon finish. Gather up your family, friends, neighbours teammates or work colleagues and get along to Richmond Park for the best harness racing action and social fun on offer in the region this Summer.
Connor, Ethan and Luke O’Toole of Wakefield were among many kids who had a great time at last summer’s meeting. They show off their face painting which along with videos, bouncy castle, pony rides and Kids Go Racing are all part of the free childrens’ entertainment on offer
Heartbreak horse breaks through for Hills Local horse Gunman (No. 12), trained by Ian Thomas, ran second at the meeting last summer. He’s overdue a win which will happen soon
Waimea West resident Cheryl Hill says, “You’ve heard of Heartbreak Hotel, well our trotter has been Heartbreak Horse. That was in reference to the seven year-old mare Ruby N Diamonds which she owns in partnership with her daughter Kristie. Cheryl’s husband Brian trains the enigmatic horse which had on several occasions promised to break maiden status before inexpli-
cably galloping near the winning post. But after breaking through for her first win Ruby N Diamonds won at Methven on December 12, paying a staggering $45. Cheryl says, “What made it all the more exciting was that Kristie drove our horse herself and it was a wonderful drive. She bided her time and picked the gaps up the straight to win going away by a neck.”

The 33rd annual craft fair will be held, wet or fine, on Sunday January 2 2011 on the Wakefield Village green and in the hall. The emphasis of the fair is on handcrafted items made by locals, although there will be a number of stalls travelling to the fair from outside the Nelson and Tasman region. There will be refreshments provided by non-profit organisations. Last year the scout group did a superb job and the funds raised went towards their jamboree. The fair runs from 8.30 am until 3.30pm and admission is free, providing a fantastic, fun day out for the whole family. Some of the crafts include sewing of clothing, quilting and patchwork, woodturning and other woodwork goods including great fold up tables and stools. Also teddy bears, funky mirrors and garden ornaments I’m sure everybody will see something that interests them. Monaco Boat Club offers perfect place to launch into your favourite watersports When the tide is high at Monaco peninsula the relatively flat and calm sea is the ideal surface for boaties and their ‘hangers-on’ in a range of aquatic activities. Water ski-ers and those being towed on skiffs and sea biscuits can have a ball as do jet skiers. Barry Bartlett of the Monaco Boat Club says, “Visitors are always welcome and
while we have a large group of enthusiastic members who get to use the boat club for free it’s only $2 for visitors.” Barry says tide pamphlets are avaialble at the boat ramp and he reminds users that “all boats towing ski-ers or water toys must have an observer as well as the driver, for safety’s sake of course.”
Water ski-ers won’t find a safer place to play than around Monaco peninsula.

HOLIDAY 2010
Nelson star will be home-town favourite for Canterbury Utd Phillip Rollo Canterbury United’s devastating striker Gagame Feni is looking to light up the sunshine city when he returns for the clash with Team Wellington on the January 16th at Trafalgar Park. Gagame, who is currently in the Solomon Islands for Christmas, will be an electric weapon out wide for coach Keith Braithwaite. Although he says he will have to wait and see whether he can crack the starting eleven for the game in Nelson. “I’ve been improving a lot. Talking more. Attacking side and defensive side. So we’ll see. I am very excited to come back in front of my home crowd,” Gagame says. Gagame scored in his first start for Canterbury, against YoungHeart Manawatu in the second round of the ASB Premiership. Netting in the 17th minute. “Oh man it was awesome. All the hard work I’ve been putting in really paid off. To score in New Zealand league is huge.” And although he has made impressive cameos off the bench, linking well with All White Aaron Clapham and goal poacher Russell Kamo, Gagame acknowledges there is plenty of room for improvement. “For now I need to work my defensive side, making the right decisions at the right time and passing the right ball to the players.” The victim of a controversial FIFA ruling that disallowed any underaged overseas player competing, Gagame had to wait till he was 18 yearsold before making his Mainland Premier League

debut, despite attending Nayland College for the past three years and clearly boasting enough talent. But since his debut, the Solomon star has continued his rapid rise in New Zealand football, highlighted by his Canterbury United selection. A two-time Secondary School National Football Championship golden boot winner and 2010’s most valuable player, Gagame spearheaded the Nelson Suburbs’ under-19 South Island championship winning side, and is likely to represent the Solomon Islands at the U-20 Oceania Football Championship World Cup qualifying tournament in April. “My biggest achievement is making Canterbury side. But there’s some room to go to get a higher level.” Nelson Suburbs’ goal keeper Coey Turipa is also likely to feature on the bench for Canterbury.

Local golf course has NZ’s longest par 5 Nelson golfers may argue local courses are challenging enough as they are, but one course has just put itself out there are perhaps one of the hardest – now boasting the country’s longest par 5. In fact hole 7, or Poplars, at Golden Down’s is the second longest par 5 in the world according to club vice-president Trevor Timpson and will give golfers in the region a good reason to come out to the club and test themselves on the country’s longest. “It will definitely be a challenge, the key will be to get it on the fairway and don’t try to hit it too hard.” The hole will not be officially opened until early next year but is now open to play on. It is not the longest hole in New Zealand, as there is some par 6 and even par 7 holes around, but is officially the longest par 5, certified and measured by NZ Golf earlier this year. Trevor says having the longest par Golden Down’s Golf Club vice president Trevor Timpson gets ready to play New Zealand’s longest five will hopefully help put the litpar 5 at Golden Down’s. The hole is now open to the public. Photo: Andrew Board. tle country club on the map.
“The hole is just the cherry on the top, we have a beautiful course in a magnificent setting, now people that come here can say they’ve played the country’s longest par 5 as well.” The hole measures at 689 metres and was built mainly by club members volunteering their time. Trevor says it has been a three year dream. “It started a while ago, but when you have people coming along to help out in their spare time it does take time. But we’re thrilled that it’s finally here and it will be a real challenge for golfers.” The 40-member strong club says it is determined to hold onto the title as well. “If another course builds one longer, we’ll just go farther back, we can go about another 100 metres, but that would be a real challenge.” To find the country’s longest par five turn off State Highway 6 in between the Spooners and Kohatu onto Golden Down’s Rd, follow the signs and have a go, urges Trevor.

Nelson sun perfect for beach volleyball comps The Beach Volleyball Tour will be serving up more fun this summer with at least two competitions hitting our local beaches. The first port of call on the tour will be the Kaiteri Beach Bash on December 27. Entry is $30 for a competitive pair or $40 for a social team of four. Make sure you are there by 9am to register and be ready to begin at 9:30am as high tides are threatening the afternoon finish. Finals will commence at 2pm. The Tahunanui Beach courts will host the tournament. The Brightwater Classic, which was postponed due to inclement weather, is likely to feature early January. But a date has not been confirmed. Entry forms for all events are at Stirling Sports Jo Winwood in finals action at the Brightwater Richmond and Nelson or from Tasman Volleyball. Beach Volleyball Championships. HOLIDAY 2010
Waimea’s year that was...
In early May Murray Kerr woke to find the Maitai Lodge at Hope Domain had been relocated near his back fence. This sparked one of the most controversial local issues of 2010 with Tasman District Council conceding their public consultation skills were lacking on this occasion

In February Nelson Tigers win the National SuperStock Teams Championships. Tigers team captain Dale Ewers (middle) is pictured with from left: Brendan Higgins, Shane Harwood, Blair Cunningham and Daryl After a prolonged period of drought Peterson during which Tasman District Council had to impose Stage 2 water restrictions the rain fell in late April to the relief of farmers. TDC hydrologist Martin Doyle welcomes the precipitation with a kiss
Gary Watson’s brother Matt sent us fascinating reports of the Football World Cup in South Africa during June. Former Richmond AFC player Jeremy Brockie was part of the All Whites squad which made the tournament all the more exciting for Matt who made some new friends along the way including Nellie and Dessie In September Gage Brown of Brightwater who trains at Fighting Fit Gym underSteve Mitchell’s expertise became the fitst fighter to bring a title to the Nelson region in nearly quarter of a century. Gage is pictured with proud dad Kevin The tragic explosion at Pike River Mine sent shockwaves throughout the nation and beyond. Among the 29 miners killed was Riki Keane (28), well known around Richmond as a former resident and Waimea Old Boys rugby player
Richmond men Kevin Krammer and Tony Crosbie (pictured with their families) who were staying in hotels when the big Canterbury quake occurred told their tale In August the Government commits to spending $2.63m on the Tasman Cycle Loop. NZ Cycle Trail manager John Dunn (middle) is with Tasman and Nelson mayors Richard Kempthorne and Kerry Marshall. At the local body elections in October Richmond Ward welcomed two new councillors, Zane Mirfin and Kit Maling (pictured with his wife Leanne).

The Murchison community endures several months of fear and anxiety over the future of their community hospital including six aged-care beds. Finally a decision was made that NMDHB would continue funding to enable the facility to remain in the close-knit community. This was of great relief to Alf & Phyllis Kinzett and her mother Isabel (all pictured) whose husband is in one of the hospital beds.

Graphic Artist
Graphic Artist Rarely available we have a position on staff for a graphic artist. Situated in a politically incorrect environment we need someone who is basically unflappable but very, very good at their job. Using InDesign and Photoshop on PC but soon to move to Apple, you have to be able to create effective, interesting ads and newspapers on a weekly basis while remaining calm as all around you collapses. This is a great job, permanent and we are a pretty good team to work for, plus we are locally owned and operated. You also get to work a lot closer with other staff and clients so the role’s much more interesting! You do have to have experience in the workforce and have a great work ethic.
