After 15 years of raising funds for the Nelson Tasman Hospice, Pearly Queen Shirley Miles has died at the age of 83.

Shirley had non-Hodgkin lymphoma and died at Nelson Hospice on Saturday.

Dressed in her distinctive pearly clothes, she had been a feature at the Nelson Market since 2002 and altogether raised $160,000 for hospice. “She was incredible,” says Nelson Tasman Hospice fundraising and marketing manager Paul McIntyre.

“She went down the market every Saturday with her bucket to raise money and was so determined to do it right to the end.”

Her outfit evolved over the years and featured images significant

to Nelson, including waves, anchors, grapes, fishing nets with fish and a large scallop shell, a pine tree, the Nelson cathedral and Shirley’s Civic Award badge for community service.

She was also recognised with a Queen’s Service Medal for her services to charity fundraising in 2016.

Paul says they will be designing a special window in memory of Shirley to go in the new hospice building.

“She’ll be hugely missed by everyone. She was a huge advocate for hospice and was a very special lady – she really personified what hospice was all about. She was very proud of what she did.”

Shirley will be farewelled at the end of this week, with hospice staff planning on wearing pearls in her honour.

Councillor defends Indian yoga trip Charles Anderson Nelson city councillor Kate Fulton is defending spending a month in India studying yoga while phoning in to council meetings.

The Nelson Weekly reported on the trip last month as it raised the ire of several councillors, with one calling the trip ‘a rort’, as she was attending meetings via teleconferencing while not actually being in the city.

Fulton said that the Weekly was perpetuating “fake news” for reporting that she was in India studying for two months to be a yoga teacher.

It was only for one month and

she wasn’t studying to be a teacher.

Councillor Tim Skinner refused to accept an apology from Kate Kate Fulton. last month at a council committee meeting.

He believed Kate should have applied for a leave of absence.

If councillors do not get apologies accepted four times they can be removed from council.

Kate has come under fire for shirking her time at the council table before – previously missing meetings as she was studying to be a midwife and

then deciding to campaign to be West Coast Tasman’s Green Party candidate.

She says the type of yoga she is studying is “particularly beneficial for those who suffer from chronic neck, back and shoulder pain”.

“It is also beneficial for those wanting to decrease the physiological impacts of stress and live with greater calmness, contentment and equanimity in their lives.”

She defended her trip saying it did not impact on her official duties and many other councillors had also taken overseas trips while she had been on council.

Boathouse rebuild begins Sara Hollyman Local musicians played to a sell-out crowd for over eight hours on Sunday to raise funds for repairs to the Boathouse after it was devastated by Cyclone Fehi on February 1.

The concert, held at the Playhouse Café,

was a "really beautiful day filled with great energy,” says organiser Trudi Wilson.

"The total amount raised is currently sitting at $3765 but the funds haven’t been specifically allocated to anything yet.

“The day was so amazing, it was just one of those days

where everyone was calm, and everything just flowed.”

Boathouse manager Ali Howard says they are raising funds to future proof the building so nothing like this happens again.

"The builders kicked off today which is great. We know that we have to future

proof, it’s just figuring out the best way to do it.”

Ali says they are seeking advice from a range of sources from all around the world including engineers and the general public. "We just want to know how are people dealing with situations like this.”

‘Superwomen’ top fundraising effort Jonty Dine Reporter

Survivors were celebrated, lost ones remembered and sufferers supported, during the eighth edition of the Nelson Relay for Life on Saturday.

It was a cavalcade of colour as young and old got together in a united front to raise spirits and funds to combat the indiscriminate disease.

Nelson Cancer Society senior manager Michelle Hunt says about 750 people in 65 teams registered for the 12-hour event, the first-ever held at Trafalgar Park, including a record 15 school teams.

She says the day was about the community coming together and showing their support to the many people in the community living with cancer.

One in three New Zealanders are directly affected by the disease.

“It’s unfortunately not going away and events like today enable the cancer society to continue to support people with all forms of cancer.”

The Nelson Relay for Life has so far raised $68,364 for the Cancer

Society.

The top fundraiser to date is Nelson woman Lizl Matthewson with $3994.

The team leader of Wonderwomen, who had collectively raised $6878, is a breast cancer survivor.

In January 2017, Lizl discovered a lump on her right breast after her daughter stopped feeding from it.

“I thought it was just a blocked milk duct,” Lizl says.

The mother of two went to the doctor, received a mammogram, a biopsy, and then saw an oncologist.

“It’s always a waiting game with cancer, it always feels like you’re waiting - for the next appointment or the next set of results.

Two weeks after her first appointment, she was diagnosed with a high grade ductal carcinoma in situ, a non-invasive breast cancer contained in the milk ducts.

Lizl says she is not one to show her emotions but couldn’t help but cry.

“I was in total disbelief, it’s like time stops for a bit.”

She says she tried to keep everything as normal as possible for her two children Jared (4) and Elzette (2).

After telling her children ‘mummy has got a sick booby and the doctors are going to take it away to make me better,’ Lizl underwent her mastectomy and is today cancer-free.

“It’s been challenging but at the same time the most important thing is that I am still here for my children.”

Lizl will begin breast reconstruction process this week, a sevenmonth process.

Once she has fully recovered Lizl wants to get back into teaching.

She has joined the Bosom Buddies breast cancer support group with other local women who share their experiences.

“There is a lot that the cancer society offer that people don’t know about.”

She says the Relay for Life fundraising effort has been an amazing distraction.

“I’m so grateful to be here. I feel very blessed and the way the community turned out was amazing.

We have to beat this together.”

Nelson house sales highest since 2007: Nelson has seen the highest number of properties sold in February in nearly 11 years, new data shows.

Figures from the Real Estate Institute (REINZ) show that house sales in Nelson were up 25.8 per cent, with 117 sales in February, compared to 93 in February 2017. “This is the highest number of properties sold since March 2007,” says REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell. The average value in the city is now $567,767.

Bus commute has ‘many benefits’ Kate Russell

Georgie Kay catches the bus from the Atawhai Four Square every morning to her job in central Nelson.

She is currently unable to drive because of an eye injury, leaving her with just the bus or a courtesy taxi as her options.

She chooses the bus.

“Even though my taxis are paid for, the bus is nicer. It’s always on time, the drivers are nice and I like the fact that I can just sit there and read. It’s just easy,” she says.

The bus takes her directly to the bus depot in Wakatu Square and she pays a “very affordable” two dollars each way.

Georgie is one of 409,571 passengers who have used Nelson’s NBus service in the past year – a figure that is slightly down on the 420,214 the year before.

Nelson City Council attributes the 2.5 percent dip in patronage to the Stoke Loop being withdrawn last year and perhaps lower fuel prices.

But Alec Louverdis, council’s group manager infrastructure, says they are aiming to boost usage with a number of proposed changes to the service this year.

These include new low floor and low emission buses on inner city routes, student/community services card fare reductions,

reducing the number of zones to reduce fares, later weekend services and the new Stoke Loop service running between 9am - 3pm, Monday to Friday.

“These changes have come about from feedback from bus users but are just proposals at this stage as part of the Regional Public Transport Plan,” he says.

Electronic ticketing will also be introduced in the second half of this year, which will reduce travel time delays and fares.

Passengers will be able purchase a card loaded with money and ‘tap on’ at a card reader on the bus at the start of the journey and ‘tap off ’ at the end, being charged the correct fare.

Thirty-trip concession cards are also available for regular bus users which can reduce the $4 fare from Nelson to Richmond to just $2.80.

Alec also says bus lanes could be an effective option for Nelson but “more work” is required before considering this.

In the meantime, he hopes the proposed changes would encourage commuters to use public transport during congested peak hours.

“With the bus, there are no parking hassles, reduced car maintenance and fuel costs, it helps to reduce congestion on the roads, bike racks on all buses also offer the choice of a combined bus/cycle journey – and it’s affordable.

“There are many benefits of catching the bus. There is no need to concentrate on traffic – you can read, play games on your phone, answer emails, make a start on work before you even get there, just relax or meet new people.”

Nelson families inspect Navy ship Sara Hollyman Families gathered for a glimpse at life in the Navy as the HMNZS Wellington opened her doors to the public on Sunday.

Nelsonians were treated to an upclose look at the ship including the bridge, living quarters, the decks and a collection of military-grade assault weapons.

HMNZS Wellington is a protectorclass offshore patrol vessel of the Royal New Zealand Navy. It is designed for maritime surveillance, supply and support, and patrol missions around New Zealand waters.

New Zealand has the third largest body of water in the world to keep surveillance on and the crew say it’s definitely a full-time job.

The ship, which is currently un-

der the command of Lieutenant Commander Damian Gibbs, is on her way home to Auckland after a five-week trip in the Sub-Antarctic Islands. Operations officer Samara Mankelow says the trip, codenamed Operation Endurance, was to assist the Department of Conservation and Metservice.

“We’ve been down there for five weeks helping to maintain DOC huts and eradicate pests. No matter where we are, we are always keeping an eye out in the waters around us for what’s going on.”

The ship will leave for Auckland today and will spend the day helping the Ministry of Primary Industries by boarding many vessels and checking up on quota limits, size restrictions and just making sure everyone is following the general fishing laws.

Kindy moves closer to new home Kate Russell It’s taking a community to rebuild one of Nelson’s oldest kindergartens.

After 56 years at their current site, Rutherford Street Kindergarten is slowly but surely on the move, thanks to the dedication of a group of passionate teachers and parents.

The kindergarten was forced to search for a new site last year, due to their landlord deciding to develop the area.

And they happened to find one just 200m up the road at the former Rutherford St Chapel, which the children refer to as “new kindy”.

The kindergarten’s deputy board chair, Penny Scott, says they are hoping to be settled in at their new destination by May/June but the not-for-profit, parent-led team needs just a bit more help to get there.

“We’ve got resource consent and building consent – now it’s about making it all happen,” she says.

“Although we’ve had incredible support already from our families and teachers, we still need donations of resources and for the wider community to help pitch in with our working bees.”

They will be taking as much of

They have already been lucky enough to secure former Nelson Tasman Kindergarten CEO Wendy Logan to oversee the project and have already had donations from some local businesses and

secured several grants.

Penny says that work is about to start on the new playground, fences, and verandah, and they plan to have working bees to fill in the soft elements.

“We have already done lots of building and renovation work inside, and we are looking forward to seeing the new flooring laid soon, which will cap it all off.

“It has been a huge amount of

work, it will be so great to see it all come together.”

The bigger location will open up space for new enrolments, with the ability to increase from the current 27 children to 32.

They also plan to have an open day once they move, so the community can look at their new location.

There were curfews, strict matrons and plenty of rules - but trainee Nelson nurses from 1958 wouldn’t change a thing.

Former nursing students from Nelson Hospital gathered at the weekend to celebrate 60 years since they started their training.

The group of 16 have made it a regular occasion since 1978 and come from afar as Christchurch, Cambridge and Picton to catch up on old times.

One member of the group, Mary Saxton, says their training lasted for three years and they were split into groups who all lived together in the nursing homes on-site at Nelson Hospital.

“I lived in Dalton House, which has since been pulled down for car-parking, and I was in Barton House as well,” she says.

She also got to be one of the first nurses to live in the Barbara Taylor home – which is now Franklyn Village. “Some of us were as young as 17 and living in the home was a lot of fun. There was a huge amount of rules and curfews and we had a matron, of course,” she says.

“But, we had our moments when we were unhappy – we went through a lot of hard stuff but we all looked after each other.”

The trainee nurses worked six days a week – including five days on the wards and one day of school work, with maternity incorporated into their training, too.

Mary recalls contracting Rubella (German measles) while living in one of the homes.

“Because I was considered to be very infectious they sent me to my room and told me not to let anyone in. But my best friend snuck in and said ‘breathe on me - I want some time off too’. When the matron came back in, she had to dive into the wardrobe and hide.”

Needless to say, her best friend contracted the measles the very next day.

Another from the group, Solveig Sheed, ended up working as a surgical nurse at Nelson Hospital for 35 years and only retired 12 years ago. She says the reunions are a highlight for her.

“We enjoy it – as you can tell by all the gas-bagging. We were like a family - we borrowed each other’s clothes and knew each other’s boyfriends, and later on all our kids and husbands knew each other.”

Meanwhile, Mary says they all plan to keep meeting up regularly - as long as they are able.

“We said when we had our 50 year reunion that we wouldn’t make it to 60 - but here we are.”

All on track for model railway expo

Charles Anderson In the back of Ian McEwan’s Stoke property is a non-descript garage that houses another world. There are ‘Neyland’, ‘Renwick’ and ‘Marlborough’ – all miniature train stations that Ian has built over years of labouring as a carpenter, electrician and designer.

“Taking something in your mind’s eye and then creating it is quite something.”

Ian grew up in Port Chalmers and used to marvel at the steam trains that arrived each day.

His grandfather was an engine driver, as well as his great grandfather.

“It’s in the blood,” says Ian. This weekend, Ian’s modelling work will be part of a showcase of trains of all shapes and sizes which will be on display at the Nelson’s Model Railway Exhibition at the Stoke Memorial Hall.

“It shows what people can actually do,” he says.

“We have people of all ages and abilities and stages.”

Exhibitors are coming from all over the South Island for the show – Cromwell, Dunedin, Geraldine, Ashburton, Oxford, Christchurch, Blenheim and the West Coast.

“The number of people in this area, even though we haven’t got a railway, is surprising how many people have model railways. They don’t say much about it.”

It will be the eighth biennial show and hosts 17 layouts covering American, British, Continental, Irish and New Zealand railways.

The size of the trains varies from ‘T gauge’ or 1:480 scale, to ‘H0n30’ or 1:87 scale.

Ian says there will also be two layouts that are interactive for young people to play with.

“The show has something for all age groups.”

The show is on March 24 and 25 from 10am to 5pm at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Entry is $5 for adults and children are $2.

Nelson Matters This week I became ‘Father of the House’, or the longest continuous serving MP in our Parliament. I was the ‘Baby of the House’ for six years and much prefer the new title although it feels strange when 50 MP’s are older than I. The role does carry a special responsibility to ensure Parliament remembers its history and protects those freedoms that are so important to our democracy.

This week 20 respected political and legal academics from the Universities of Auckland, Victoria, Canterbury and Otago came out damning the Government’s

electoral law changes that will enable party leaders to dismiss MP’s from Parliament.

The professors of law say the Government is breaching the Bill of Rights, will weaken our democracy and will give party leaders too much power. The Bill is colloquially referred to as ‘Waka Jumping’. It goes much further than just applying to a MP who resigns from a party.

The Bill enables a party leader to dismiss a MP if they criticise the party or vote differently.

I am proud of being a National MP but my duty to our country and Nelson comes first. I crossed

the floor to vote for a minimum wage for youth. I exposed financial wrong doing in the Druids, much to the discomfort of some senior National MPs. I would not have been able to do this if this Bill was the law then. It will have a chilling effect on all MP’s in our Parliament.

This so-called Electoral Integrity Bill is justified on the basis that MP’s who switch parties are acting without integrity. This overlooks the fact that the founding members of all of New Zealand’s political parties, including Labour and National, switched from other parties. Dissident

MP’s like Matt Rata, Derek Quigley, Mel Courtney, Marilyn Waring, Jim Anderton, Winston Peters, Tariana Turia and most recently Hone Harawira represented a legitimate opinion. You do not have to agree with someone to agree with their right to disagree.

The party hopping of the 1990’s was a product of the change to MMP. It is no reason to permanently change the accountability of MP’s away from voters to party leaders. Lead advocates for MMP like Rod Donald have described previous similar Bills as draconian, obnoxious and

anti-democratic.

This Bill would be unconstitutional in Germany, the home of MMP. The Courts in Malaysia, Europe and PNG have thrown them out for breaching basic human rights. The only countries that have these laws are regimes like Zimbabwe and Pakistan.

Freedom of speech and tolerating dissent are core Kiwi values.

The right to hire and fire MP’s must stay with voters at the ballot box.

Every few weeks we sit down at the Vic Brewbar with an interesting local chat about their life and passion.

Here we speak with Cawthron senior scientist Xavier Pochon, who curiously became a marine biologist who hails from landlocked Switzerland.

He tells us about the wonder of coral reefs, world changing research and his hope for the future.

Q: How did you come be studying the ocean?

A: I started studying coral reefs and how they adapt and are affected by climate change.

Biology has always held something for me. I wanted to know more about life.

Q: What is it about coral reefs that interests you?

A: It’s mind-blowing when you have the opportunity to be immersed in a healthy coral reef.

I was lucky enough to discover those reefs 20 years ago in Queensland. At the time it was incredible, but lately it’s a catastrophe.

We can see the decline as we live it. This is a really sad time. There is still hope, though.

Q: What have you been working on recently?

A: We have developed technology which allows you to take any environmental samples like from soil, water, or a ship and scrape the surface of it – and extract all the molecules and then use the technology to identify and count the organisms that are present in it. We have been using it to study fish farms, as traditional methods costs a lot of money and takes four months for results. It allows us to look at biological changes across any source. Now

we have tools that allows us to have results in weeks. The challenge now is to take it further.

Q: Do Nelsonians appreciate the work Cawthron does?

A: I think most are really well aware and proud of what we are doing. It’s a landmark in terms of international research and standards over the last few years has been really going up. We have been attracting some outstanding researchers. None of this is possible without my colleagues.

It’s essential to work in a team –

Q: Does the future give you hope?

A: It's devastating to see this happen to corals but there is always potential for corals to adapt.

They sustain the base of the food chain from the tiniest creature to the largest. They are essential to protect coastlines - they form barriers. Otherwise there would be massive erosion.

They are responsible for feeding a billion people. But it does not look good. We certainly hope there will be some sort of a shift in the way we consume energy.

All this is linked to carbon dioxide in the environment which increases the heat and decreases the ph level of the ocean.

Q: What do you suggest people can do to help?

A: I always try to give facts but we need solutions. We have good potential and the power to change things. If you inform people you can see the change in people. Education is key for me. You can consume locally, use your bike, here we can do these small things. Even educate the young. They don't want to live in a degraded environment.

Opening the door on the past Heritage Homes Tour: 14 April, 10am – 4pm The Heritage Homes Tour is a rare opportunity to experience eight wonderful heritage listed homes in the city. These generous house owners will open the door of their homes to allow tour participants to get a glimpse of their unique residence.

The tour will be held on Saturday 14 April from 10am to 4pm and is organised by the Nelson Cancer Society to raise funds to help those affected by cancer. Michelle Hunt, Nelson Cancer Society Centre Manager says, “the Cancer Society relies on fundraising, and the generosity and support of our community."

“It’s a great opportunity to experience these wonderful heritage homes, while raising funds for a worthy cause.

What’s raised locally, stays in the area to help those affected by cancer,” says Michelle.

The Heritage Homes Tour is part of three weeks of exciting events celebrating Nelson’s unique stories, people and places, starting on 9 April. Nelson City Council is supporting individuals and community groups to run their own events to celebrate and highlight Nelson’s heritage.

Councillor Gaile Noonan, Chair of the Community Services Committee says, “The tour is a great opportunity to celebrate Nelson’s rich history. These tours sell out quickly so people need to book early. The funds are going to a very worthy organisation.

“The Heritage Homes Tour recognises the work being done by the home owners, and others. It’s interesting to see what lies behind the front door of these privately owned heritage homes,” says Gaile.

Best practice sediment control The recent heavy rain in the Nelson region has highlighted the need for best practice in sediment management, especially where earthworks are concerned.

Council has best practice guidelines in place, and developers have obligations to control erosion and sediment. Sediment management is included in the conditions on resource consents

Student exchange to develop Nelson’s Sister City relationship with Yangjiang The opportunity to experience a “different way of life” is what a group of six Nelson school students is looking forward to when they travel on a cultural exchange to Nelson’s Sister City, Yangjiang in China.

The Year 12 and 13 students will travel in April, with the purpose of developing Nelson’s relationship with Yangjiang and to provide a cultural experience for the students. This is the first project involving the New Zealand China Friendship Society (NZCFS) and Yangjiang.

Exchange students Lark Brudvik-Lindner from Nelson College for Girls, Samuel Ancell and Sidney Barron from Nelson College, Garin College’s Jade Alborn and Megan Ritchie, along with Meila Gillam from Waimea College have a special interest in the Arts.

The group will attend Guangdong Liangyang Senior High School, a school of 3600 students and will stay in the school dormitories.

“I have only ever been to two schools and to go to such a large school will be a really great experience for me,” says Megan Ritchie.

It is hoped this will be the beginning of exchanges between Nelson and Yangjiang Colleges.

The students, along with chaperones Jane and Ian Lister and Nelson Branch of the NZCFS Secretary Barbara Markland, met with Mayor Rachel Reese last week.

They talked about travel experiences, what to expect in China and what they are looking forward to about the trip. Mayor Reese gave the group a message to take to the Mayor of Yangjiang.

The popularity of the Positive Ageing Expo “is due to the huge range of activities under one roof at one time,” says Mike. “A whole raft of information can be disseminated in one day and it means you don’t have to navigate your way through websites or phone books— you can chat directly with stallholders and service providers.”

“The event allows people to come along and have face-to-face discussions with a whole lot of groups and service providers. The stallholders are there to provide information, and it means there are opportunities for people to find out things as broad as banking or financial information, through to the many different clubs and activities they can get involved in themselves.

It’s about delivery of service, but also people may want to get into volunteering or utilising the skills they already have.” For example, event attendees “can have a conversation with the Nature Bird Recovery group about the work they do and the projects they have been involved in”, says Mike. “Often it’s interesting for people to know where the tracks are, see the results of work that’s been done, and potentially get involved at some point. It’s about making sure people’s skills are being used, that they are active and engaged in the community.” The Menzshed is another great example “in which people’s skills in carpentry and engineering can be used in the community”.

New play is ‘the voice of every mother’

Laura Irish was with her newborn son in a studio apartment in South Korea when she first felt the petrifying isolation that can come with motherhood.

“I had never felt so alone, with so much pressure to do a job I had no training to do and no guide book to learn,” she says.

It is an experience that permeates “Medea, the Mother” where the award-winning writer and actor leads the audience on a path of passion, honesty and ultimately violence.

Reviewers have called the play “the voice of every mother”.

The play dissects literature’s most despised woman – Medea, who infamously killed her children to spite her husband.

But Laura humanises the character and asks questions about how a mother could have been taken to such a terrible decision. She runs her own story in parallel - the audience is taken through the birth of her first child in a foreign land to a man she barely knew, and traces it through to her realisations of the similarities between Medea and herself.

“The eventual decisions we made were very different but they could have been similar,” Laura says.

Laura has just returned from a successful run of the show at the Dunedin Fringe Festival, and in Christchurch where reviewers admired her honesty in addressing an issue so often left unspoken.

“There are so many people who feel the same things I did and still do, but we keep it to ourselves ... I hope this lets people voice their worries and fears."

Laura says the show is as much for women as it is for men.

“Some of the most powerful responses have been from men who have been presented with a side to the story that they often haven’t considered.”

As one reviewer noted: “It might take a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to support a mother.”

Tasman United could not deliver the fairy-tale farewell for star striker Paul Ifill on Sunday.

With the play-off out of reach, the team travelled to West Auckland for their final match of the season against Waitakere United, looking to finish fifth on the National Football Championship table.

However, Waitakere ended a nine-match losing streak with a 5-3 victory at Trusts Arena.

Maksym Kowal and teenagers Mat Tod-Smith and Callan Elliot each netted one for the visitors, but a hat-trick by Waitakere striker Ryan Cain put the result beyond doubt.

The result meant Tasman finished sixth, one point behind Southern United.

While a disappointing end to the

season, a highlight has been the emergence of a trio of talented teenagers.

Callan (18), Mat (19) and Lyle Matthysen (19), each played a pivotal part in Tasman United’s second season in the National Football Championship.

Callan and Mat made the ‘odd appearance’ last season, but the three became regulars this year in what they describe as a ‘tight knit team.’

Lyle, from Christchurch, moved to the region after being scouted playing for Cashmere Tech.

He says it has been a massive step up, but a great experience.

“It’s faster and more physical but I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Lyle says a highlight for him was the round 10 game against Canterbury United.

While the result wasn’t good, a 6-0 loss, Lyle says it was a special moment to play against friends

Callan recently returned to Nelson after finishing school at Rathkeale College in Wairarapa and was asked to re-join Tasman United after a handful of appearances from the bench. “It’s been a big step up, you have to be a lot more fit in this league.”

While Mat has progressed from the Tasman youth side to the senior squad.

Lyle will go back to Christchurch to play for Cashmere Tech this winter while Callan will return to Wairarapa United and Mat will head to the United Kingdom for a holiday.

All three players hope to return for the 2018-19 season kicking off in October.

Coach Davor Tavich says he is "fairly pleased" with how the season has panned out.

"We were on track for the top four before having a few bad results."

Davor says the team's home form was particularly disappointing, ending their hopes of playing finals footy.

"We had a lot of home support so maybe the pressure just got to us a bit, it certainly wasn’t through lack of trying.”

Davor thanked the Nelson community for turning out in droves and he regretted not being able to deliver more results.

However, with four teenagers in the squad, the future looks bright for the United faithful.

"We had a really good balance of experience of youth and we hope to build on that next season."

Golden Bay sport teams stranded Jonty Dine

Junior footballers in Golden Bay will have to wait a little longer to start their season this year.

Cyclone Fehi caused significant damage to the Golden Bay Football Club’s grounds and access to and from the small coastal settlement.

GBFC committee member Pew Singh says the season’s start will be delayed because of the Takaka Hill closure times and the quality of the football fields at the Rec Park Centre.

“The football season is set to kick off on April 7 but as it stands we do not see the possibility of being able to submit teams in the Nelson competitions.”

Takaka Hill is closed on Saturday’s between 8am and 5pm while parts of the road are being repaired and the club feel it is impractical to expect teams to travel outside of these hours to get to games.

“No team from the Nelson area will come to play here in Golden Bay with these travel restrictions.”

Pew says the fields at the Rec Park Centre are unsafe and unusable in their current state.

Brothers back racing after 14 year break Jonty Dine Reporter

You can take the man off the track but not the track out of the man.

After a combined 14-year absence, brothers Adrian and Nigel Curtis returned to the MotorSport NZ Club Sport Championships in Christchurch at the weekend.

Hosted by the Canterbury Car Club, the two-day competition pitted some of the best amateur drivers in the country in a race for club sport supremacy.

After Adrian and Nigel spent nine and five years out of competition, respectively, it was a phone call from an old friend that prompted the brothers to dust off the driving gloves.

Veteran Hawke’s Bay driver and 12-time national clubsport champion Brent Redington convinced the brothers to get back behind the wheel.

"We are very competitive and [Brent's] had it too easy for too long, so I thought I better give him a challenge," Adrian says.

The brothers have won eight New Zealand titles between them, including a hat-trick of club sport championships for Adrian.

The weekend’s event was split into three disciplines, the Motorkhana, Autocross and the Bent Sprint on tarseal, grass and tarmac, respectively.

Adrian likens the sport to what most people would call ‘stunt driving.’

"It involves reverse turns, handbrake slides and a lot of steering wheel action.”

But like most motorsport competitions, "the key is not to hit anything".

He says the challenge is to be consistent across all disciplines.

Adrian’s driving philosophy is to not drive as fast as possible but to leave a little bit in reserve.

He said before the competition

that if he made it to the final event on Sunday, he would put the pedal to the metal.

"If the car is in one piece at the tar seal event I will be going as fast as I can, I’ll have nowhere near the fastest car, but I’ll give it a damn good crack.”

Adrian drove a club sport car which he and his support crew built in eight weeks.

The car was owned by an old lady who had driven about 90,000 km.

"We turbo charged it, intercooled it and modified it into something

a bit different.”

Things didn’t go to plan, however, as Adrian slipped to sixth place in the autocross event.

“I’ve never been outside the top three before so its pretty disappointing.”

He says the car was almost undrivable and they requested to use their tow car for the bent sprint event.

Adrian finished fifth in the 2000kg diesel BMW. “The course was not designed for that sort of vehicle at all so

to finish fifth was a great effort, we were the talking point of the weekend.”

Nigel was looking to go one better than his best past result at the championships racing his modified Suzuki Cappuccino.

He has finished second, third and fourth on six separate occasions.

Nigel is embracing the old adage that size doesn’t matter, it’s how you use it.

He has scaled back from a supercar with 600 HP to 1300cc and about 100 HP. "My car is only 3.5m long by 1.25m wide and weighs 650kg.”

He says while its small, it’s incredibly manoeuvrable.

"It’s so skinny, there wouldn’t be a skinnier car in the country.”

While admitting he may struggle in the high-speed event, he was confident of a top five finish in the Motorkhana and Autocross.

Nigel’s car also struggled, eventually finishing 10th.

Nigel says he and his brother have reverted to modifying club sport level cars as opposed to supercars.

"You’ve got the big events like the Supercars, the rallies and the circuits.

"But this is the event for the little guy who doesn’t have a lot of money.

He says this way car enthusiasts can race for about $5000 a year instead of $500,000.

"It’s the pinnacle of where you can go with a little car and budget.”

Bowlers win $10k

Big Fish-Big Prizes Dominik Berghamer Recently the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club held their annual Snapper Cup competition. The event was postponed because of weather conditions, but was still enjoyed by 100 members who entered and 97 fish were caught.

The heaviest snapper was pulled in by Kevin Bannan at 10.620kg and the prize for the heaviest snapper (junior) went to Ollie Meek with a fish of 5.260kg.

A big thank you to our sponsors, Big Blue Dive and Fish, Fluid Electronics, DNA boats, Placemakers, Lowrance and Richmond Aquatic Centre who altogether provided over $10,000 of prizes.

There were a lot of very happy faces and it was nice to see some new members taking home their share of the bounty. Some of us

did not have any luck fishing, but were privileged to have dolphins put on a show.

Now it is time to turn the corner, the seasons are on the change again, which means the fish are moving around. There are reports of snapper being caught, though patchy, and gurnard, another great tasting table fish, are in a large number around the province. However, there is still good fishing to be had, if you end up in the right place at the right time.

We have two great events coming up. Okiwi Bay weekend 7and 8 April and D’Urville Island weekend 11 to 13 May. So, members, don’t let the cooler weather put you off. Rug up and get amongst it for the start of our autumn season.

CRICKET: A pair of promising Nelson cricketers are making a strong impression during their first-class debuts.

Allrounder Willem Ludick and legspinner Felix Murray took six wickets between them in the first innings of the round eight Plunket Shield match against the Wellington Firebirds at the Basin Reserve.

Willem represented Athletic College Old Boys this season and South Africa U19 at the 2016 World Cup, while Nelson College’s Felix played for New Zealand at the same tournament and again at this summer’s U19 World Cup. Willem will turn 21 on the final day of the four-day match and is coming off an unbeaten century in each innings for Central Districts A against Northern Districts A last week.

For 19-year-old Felix, it is just the second time he has been named in a Central Stags squad in any format after he was included in the squad for a 50 over match last season but was omitted from the playing XI. Willem ended the first innings with figures of 4 for 102 off 26 including the dismissal of Luke Woodcock for 147.

Felix meanwhile took 2 for 89 including the scalp of former New Zealand spinner Jeetan Patel. The Firebirds posted 530 all out in their first turn at bat with the Stags 226 for 3 at stumps on day 2.

SporTS Mitre 10 Cup provincial rugby season with a rematch of the 2017 final.

The Mako are drawn to meet NPC champions Canterbury at Lansdowne Park, Blenheim on Friday evening, August 17. The following weekend Blenheim will host Tasman’s second match, a clash with championship side Southland on Sunday afternoon, August 26.

The next home game for the Mako is on Friday September 14, against Taranaki at Trafalgar Park, Nelson, followed by fixtures at the same venue against Counties Manukau (September 23) and the final round-robin match, against Hawke’s Bay, on October 11. The Mako will have a new coaching line-up for 2018, with two new, but familiar, faces joining head coach Leon MacDonald and attack coach Andrew Goodman as part of the coaching crew.

Former Mako captain Shane Christie comes on board as forward and defence coach, along with former All Black Clarke Dermody who will be the new set piece coach.

Birkenhead bowlers Randall Watkins, Steve Yates and Curtis Ennor won a tense final 12-10 against Whakatane on Wednesday afternoon.

United, Tahunanui, Stoke and Ngawhatu Bowling Club's co-hosted 46 teams from all over New Zealand for the three day tournament.

Tournament convener Barry Pont says the tournament ran smoothly with great weather and organisation from the host clubs.

Nelson last hosted the event in 2010 and Barry says they will be putting their hands up to host again in the future.
