Our name sums us up, Marlborough Magazine is the only magazine dedicated to Marlburians. Each month we look at the people, buildings, fashion and places that make our town special. Marlborough Mag is written, photographed, designed and owned by Marlburians. We’re the only magazine that can say that.

ANIMAL ADVOCATE GOES THE EXTRA MILE Over the month of August, animal advocate Ethan Alderlieste, 17, will attempt to row a massive 310,000 metres, the equivalent distance of SH1 from Blenheim to Christchurch, to raise money for animal charity Marlborough Dog Pawz and Fur Ever Homes NZ. Why are you such an animal champion, what makes animals special? Animals love you unconditionally. Their value to humans is exceptional and powerful. They provide comfort and emotional support, companionship, therapy and friendship and in return, they rely on us to care for them, to ensure they have food, water and shelter and more importantly love. If you could wave a magic wand, what one thing would you change regarding animal welfare in New Zealand and why? That there was more value placed on an animal’s life, that there was more education around caring for animals and there was so much more support for the agencies who care for the abused, neglected and abandoned animals. What pets did you have growing up and what are some of your favourite memories? Throughout my childhood, my family fostered a wide variety of animals - cats, dogs, goats, everything! I think some of my favourite memories would be raising

bobby calves when I was in primary school and seeing what work needed to be put in to become responsible owner.

over New Zealand! Not only pets but also on dairy farms, factory farms (chickens, pigs etc). It’s just incredibly overwhelming.

In your opinion, what makes someone a good pet owner?

If you could remove one animal from the endangered species list, what would it be and why?

If someone is looking at adopting a pet, they really need to deeply think about the huge responsibility they are taking up. The exciting thought of owning an animal can overrule the truth of large responsibilities and therefore people rush into adopting without knowing what they’re signing themselves up for. This is where the sad neglect comes into place as owners finally realise the huge responsibility.

This is a hard one - so many! Whales, especially now that Japan has re-started commercial whaling!

A good pet owner in my opinion is someone who deeply cares about others - someone who is willing to put their pet before themselves in any situation. You also need to know your schedule to understand if you have any time and constant energy to be caring, for example daily walks, playing and continuous love. Is enough being done to protect our pets and animals from abuse and neglect?

THE HOME OF

Hundreds of dogs and their owners will descend upon Marlborough from around New Zealand in October.

T

hey’re making their way to the region for the Black Hawk 2019 National Dog Show; the first national dog show to be held outside one of New Zealand’s main centres.

“They were sold within the first 20 minutes of going online. We increased to 100 and they were sold by the end of the day and then we increased to 150 sites and they have also sold out,” Keith says.

Show chairman Keith Brown says the event will be held across four Marlborough locations, adopting a brand-new format for the competition, which is in its 65th year.

“Entries don’t close until the 20th of August, but we had record entries for the first two days.”

“This is the first time it’s ever gone to a regional city in New Zealand … it’s coming to Marlborough because some of the facilities [in larger centres] aren’t big enough to hold in one area,” he says. Here, the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000, Marlborough Convention Centre, Rewi Murray Polo Ground and at our own grounds in Omaka will host aspects of the national show. Registrations for the event went on sale in July, prompting record sales. “We had 80 grooming sites available per day, and it goes over the four days.

8

August 2019

Keith and his organising committee have been working closely with the Marlborough District Council to organise and market the event. He believes Marlborough’s unique location makes it a great place for people to get to from both the North and the South Islands. “Marlborough is an easy location to get to for North Island exhibitors, rather than having to get off the ferry and drive to Christchurch they can get off the ferry and drive 20 minutes.” Motels, hotels and holiday homes are filling up quickly for the event, with judges and a range of supporting vendors also

coming to support the show from around New Zealand, Australia and the globe, Keith says. “We’re selling Marlborough as a destination, not only in wine but also the Marlborough Sounds for things for people to do; the majority of people are coming for a weeks’ holiday.” Dogs will be judged on agility, obedience and conformation, with each category hosted at a different location. “We are going to bring to Marlborough a concept that’s never been done before, to hold the three events in one town, to showcase everything that a dog can do.” Agility requires dogs to navigate an obstacle course without a leash or incentives, competing for both time and accuracy. Their owners are not allowed to touch them or the obstacles. Conformation is judged solely on the appearance of the dog, judged on their structure and appearance in accordance to what is considered optimal for the breed.

Obedience measures how well dogs respond to various commands as set out in the show’s obedience requirements. Each dog is judged on its understanding and ability to respond to commands such as ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘stay’. Keith has been breeding dogs since he was a teenager, and in more recent years has spent many weekends travelling the world to judge international dog shows. “My parents bred dogs, a breed called Pekingese and I ventured out into American Cockers in my late teens. I’ve also bred Miniature Schnauzers, and shown Afghan Hounds and Giant Schnauzers and several other breeds to become one of the most foremost kennels in New Zealand history, I’ve bred or owned over 40 grand champions,” Keith says.

“I’ve bred multiple champions not only here but around the world.” A lot of work goes into breeding champion dogs, and the show is a chance for the public to gain an insight into that work, and the rewards that come with it, Keith says. “It takes many years of skill to learn how to breed and show dogs, so the public will have the opportunity to meet and greet those dogs and look at the insight into how to breed those dogs … Showing and breeding dogs is not for the faint-hearted.” As well as the day to day training of show dogs, several health and wellbeing requirements need to be met and maintained for every dog, Keith says. He believes the show is a good demonstration of the types of things people can achieve while bonding with their dogs. “People can do things with their pet rather than leaving it in the backyard,” he says.

The show will run from Wednesday, October 2 until Saturday October 5 and is open to the public at a cost of $25 per family of four and $12 per individual entry. And $6.00 per child The black tie finale and judging event at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 is also open to the public at a cost of $10 per person and will include live entertainment and a light show. Starting time for this event is 6pm. Also an all breeds show will be held on the final day on 6 October at club grounds in Omaka. Tickets will be sold at the door for each event.

CELEBRITY FEATURE

PLAYING BY HER OWN RULES New Zealand musician Hollie Smith has worked with numerous bands including Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Detroit dance legend Recloose. She was approached by New Zealand song writing royalty Don McGlashan to perform on a movie soundtrack single ‘Bathe in The River’ that topped the New Zealand singles charts and became one of the biggest and iconic singles in New Zealand history. It’s 25 years since you first started performing. How have you evolved as a musician in that time? That’s a hard question to answer! Everyone (hopefully) evolves daily so that’s a lot of days! It’s not like I’m Madonna or anything where I reinvent myself every decade but of course I would hope I’ve come a long way since being a shy 13-year-old… still shy though! Is it still nerve-wracking performing live or coming up with new material? I think anxiety will always be inbred in certain industries - it comes out in different ways and sometimes unexpectedly, so yes and no, I guess. New material is only harder because you second guess it a bit more-in regard to making sure it’s not too similar to other songs. I’ve always found lyrics hard, so finding new inspiration takes longer sometimes.

What gives you your inspiration for writing music? All sorts! Everything around me. People, feelings, politics, current affairs, family I’m inspired all the time… I just also happen to be an incredibly skilful procrastinator. Marlborough is known as a bit of a starting platform for upcoming musicians. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the industry? Sounds cheesy but I guess just stay true to what you want to do and what you want to achieve. Don’t conform to rules. If you are in music for the right reasons, then it will just continue. Also, regardless of assumptions, if you want to do this to get rich, move along, it’s not for you. How easy is it to combine what you want to write with producing something you feel is relevant to your fans?

be able to recite a Hollie Smith song. I write what I write and hope that someone likes it. (NB. Bathe is not mine) When you’re 80-years-old, what key musical milestones would you like to have achieved? If I make it to 80 it will be a miracle.

Hollie Smith is a judge at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival held in Marlborough and will perform on Saturday 10th August at the Finale Gala Concert alongside band “The Committee” and all participating schools. Get your tickets now at the ASB Theatre box office or online at ticketek.co.nz

What’s your favourite purchase?

AARON: My Doc Martens - they’re a classic and last a lifetime. GEORGIA: My high wasted black NOBODY skinny jeans from No4. Boutique. What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?

AARON: You can’t go wrong with a decent pair of denim jeans in your preferred style. And remember lads, no outfit is complete without a good haircut.

GEORGIA: Black skinny jeans and a black classic blazer – LOVE! Do you have a style rule you always obey?

AARON: Just do you!! If you feel good and comfortable in it, wear it! Don’t listen to anyone else!

GEORGIA: Never go anywhere barefoot – yuck! You would never catch me wearing?

MARLBOROUGH DOG PAWZ HELP STRUGGLING ANIMALS FIND THEIR FEET STORY: KAT DUGGAN

W

hen Michelle Madsen and Leslie Hamersley began their journey with Marlborough Dog Pawz, the aim was to help neglected puppies and dogs into loving homes. Two years on, their repertoire has expanded to include cats and kittens, and the job does not seem to be getting any smaller. The initiative was started when the pair saw an increase in puppies and dogs being given away for free, Michelle says. “We started it a couple of years ago more for desexing and rehoming of dogs but it got out of control, sort of, we realised that there was a lot of animals in need.” “We will pick up puppies off Facebook or Trade Me then we make sure they are desexed, vaccinated, chipped and registered. Then we do a property inspection and meet the family [of the new home],” she says. A lot of work goes into making sure both cats and dogs are fit for a new home, and Marlborough Dog Pawz has been lucky to have had the support from local businesses like The Vet Centre Marlborough. The centre helps out through occasional ‘cat desexing days’, volunteering their time and money to the cause, and also by offering a good desexing rate for the organisation year-round.

“We would desex hundreds of cats in a year. We did 89 in one hit a few weeks ago through the Vet Centre, they are amazing. All the nurses and the vets donated their day, we started at eight in the morning

...the best bit, is finding those good families and knowing they are going to be loved forever.

and left at eight at night,” Michelle says. SUPPLIED

Marlborough Dog Pawz rescue cat Teddy with his owner Emily Hulburt, 7.

“They look after us well every day of the week.” Michelle believes more needs to be done at a government and local government level to control the ballooning number of cats and dogs born into an environment with a lack of resources. In particular, she believes the ‘four cat’ Marlborough District Council bylaw needs to be enforced, and that breeders of both cats and dogs should need to be registered to breed.

‘Paws for a Cause’ across the month of August brought to you by helloworld Travel Blenheim We love travel and that’s a fact…but did you know we are also all dedicated animal lovers? This month, join our team in supporting two fabulous animal organizations here in Marlborough – Marlborough Dog Pawz and The SPCA Centre in Renwick. These guys do an amazing job and we want them to know how much we appreciate them. So, how can you get involved?

At an individual level, potential pet owners need to educate themselves and prepare for the long term needs of their animal, Michelle says.

In-store ‘Paws for A Cause Whine Barrel’ Do you have extra pet food, small warm blankets you want to recycle or toys your pets may have outgrown? A barrel for each cause, we’re providing a drop-off point in store for nonmonetary donations for these precious organizations. Simply pop in-store with your item during normal business hours between Mon 5th Aug until Wed 28th Aug, and at the end of the month we’ll present the goodies to these wonderful groups!

“People need to make sure that they can afford animals. My biggest hate is seeing animals ‘for free’, no animal is free,” she says. “They have good intentions but then the dogs grow up, we get regular phone calls saying ‘I can’t control this dog’, they get them as a little pup and now they are 40kgs, and they don’t think it through.” Animals are often picked up in an anxious and malnourished state and are cared for by Marlborough Dogs Pawz’ foster carers until they can be placed into a loving permanent home. “That’s the best bit, is finding those good families and knowing they are going to be loved forever,” Michelle says. “It’s the best feeling, it gives me goosebumps every time.”

Anyone looking to support Marlborough Dog Pawz can do so by donating food or money via their Facebook page, @marlboroughdogpawz.

Kids Be in to Win! Come in-store, pick up a colouring competition entry form and be in to win a prize pack for you and your pet! We have 3 age groups (Under 5 years, 6-10 years and 11 years and over) with the top 3 as chosen by our team from each age group being posted on our helloworld Travel Blenheim Facebook page. Entries to be in by 5pm Thursday 22nd August. It will then be up to our followers to vote for their favourite completed entries. AIRAU PHARMACY

SWAPPING VEGAN FOR PEGAN Move over keto – there’s a new food fad dubbed the ‘pegan’ diet and it’s working its way to the top, promising to promote optimal health through the ultimate combination of benefits from two popular eating regimes – paleo and vegan. Words: Clementine Page

W

hile the two styles may seem like they’re at odds, the main principle that ‘peganism’ takes from both is a focus on real, nutrient-dense whole foods – in short, anything you can find based on the concept of ‘hunting and gathering’. Primarily consisting of fruits and vegetables, alongside small to moderate amounts of meat, certain fish, nuts, seeds and good fats, ‘peganism’ limits dairy intake and avoids heavily processed foods like sugar, oils and grains, instead embracing low gylcemic fruits and vegetables like strawberries, grapes, peas and kumara and heart-healthy oils such as olive, avocado and coconut.

25

August 2019

When done right, the diet not only aids weight loss because of the filling fibre and less calories offered by fruits and vegetables, it also claims to help control diabetes through balancing blood sugar levels – although sadly you will have to abolish coffee and alcohol. Whole foods – fruit and veggies – are famed for their anti-inflammatory and detoxification benefits, which will evidently lead to a healthier you. So whether you want to up your health game, embrace a new diet that doesn’t limit your food options, or you’re a oncesteadfast carnivore looking to welcome a more plant-based style of eating into your dieting regime, ‘peganism’ could be for you!

hen Nadine and Richard Norton settled on the site for their home, they took a step away from traditional selling points. Typically selected on its ability to catch the sun, the couple instead opted for a section with stunning views, despite those views being positioned to the south east. “We had a narrow north-facing site, and our vision was the views needed to be captured from as many areas within the home as possible as they were what really sold us on the section,” Nadine says. “We knew from the start that it wasn’t

going to be built traditionally for all day sun.” Positioned at the end of a cul-de-sac, careful planning went into ensuring the home cashed in on as much of the sun as possible, while also maximising its surroundings. As a result, the formal lounge basks in the sun for most of the day, while the kitchen, living and dining rooms capture the morning sun. Set in one of Marlborough’s newest subdivisions, Boulevard Park on Taylor, the views which sold the couple on the

Clean white in the kitchen adds a touch of freshness, while shades of green bring the whole home together through plants, cushions, throws and towels in the living rooms, bedrooms and bathroom. A walk-in pantry adds extra functionality to the kitchen, while not taking away from its seamless design. Designed with family living in mind, the home features four bedrooms. “It’s personalised for my family and our extensive wish-list. We have teenage daughters and their only request was maximum wardrobe space so they have been fortunate enough to have spacious walk in robes.” As one of the owners of Endeavour Homes Marlborough, custom designed homes are a concept Nadine has vast experience with. The company also prides itself on its ability to work with sections of all shapes and sizes, she says. “Our expertise is to work with all ranges of sites from residential sections right through to farms,” Nadine says. “We don’t have set plans, we’re very flexible, so we can change our specifications to suit the clients, and we build to people’s budgets.” In house designer Simon Reeve has been with Endeavour Homes Marlborough for 12 years and works with each client to ensure their new home aligns with their vision.

“The clients are very involved in the whole process, and they feel like they have full input in the design of their home” Nadine says. The company was established in Nelson in 1996 and opened in Marlborough in 2001. Since then, they have worked closely with a range of Marlborough tradesmen and women, establishing valuable partnerships, Nadine says. “It’s a real team in here, and the team extends out to our subcontractors, we wouldn’t be where we are without our quality subcontractors.” Nadine started her journey at Endeavour Homes Marlborough over 15 years ago in the office and has undertaken a variety of roles over the years that eventually lead into ownership of the company. She and her team pride themselves on quality builds, often attracting repeat clients and referral work. “We pride ourselves on our quality of workmanship” Nadine says.

A TOKEN AFRICAN STORY: PAULA HULBURT

Comedian Urzila Carlson is freaked out by giant fruit. A dearth of out of proportion produce is just one reason the talented performer is looking forward to her upcoming show at the ASB Theatre Marlborough.

T

he South African-born performer turned loyal Kiwi is not shy talking about the country she once called home. A robbery helped her make the decision to move to New Zealand in 2006 and while she’s long recovered from that scare, Herculean kiwi fruits and carrots creep her out. “The massive fruit you guys have at the entrance of some towns...it’s really creepy,” she explains. Her latest show Urzila Carlson Token African takes to the stage in Blenheim on Thursday 29 August. Urzila may have become a New Zealand citizen in 2012, but the country she once called home is at the centre of her new nationwide tour. “Africans have become the new must have accessory. Okay, not really, but everyone knows one, works with one or has a sister that’s dating one of us. “Africa changes people. People who visit

34

to game reserves wear ranger outfits… why is that? We don’t wear scrubs when going to the doctor… Africa puts things in perspective, this show will help you find that focus, delivered to you by a Token African,” she explains. Described by The Stage as “effortlessly likeable”, Carlson is a gifted comedian, a talent that may well run in the family, with her mother coming in for some credit. “She’s so funny, she has the driest sense of humour and she cracks me up so much that I laugh till I can’t breathe. “She does all of that with clean humour too so it’s pretty impressive…I don’t know how to do it.” Her mother is also her inspiration for her attitude to life; it is what you make it. “My mum raised me with a great understanding that life is 10 per cent how you get it and 90 per cent how you make it. I have no regrets.”

The outspoken blonde is a familiar sight on TV screens around the country and in Australia. From Seven Days to Orange is the New Brown, it’s hard to believe that the 43-year old only began her comedy career 11 years ago. Positive reviews follow-her wherever she performs and her ASB Theatre Show is set to be a real crowd-pleaser. “Carlson is a gifted and accomplished comedian – an absolute must-see.” raves Appetite for the Arts while The Music is quick to praise her: “Belly laughs and guffaws aplenty”. The NZ Comedy Guild Award winner has embraced her life as a fully-fledged Kiwi, and that includes wearing jandals. “But I still won’t touch mince and cheese pies…. that’s weird,” she laughs.

Tickets are available from www.asbtheatre.co.nz for Urzila’s show which will be held in the McLauchlan Family Auditorium at ASB Theatre Marlborough on Thursday 29th August, 7.30pm.

On the topic of food, dinner guests crop up. Apart from her wife Julie and two children, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern would be top of her guest list. “I know she’s good company and likes a good whiskey, and I think it’ll be nice to hang out with someone that understands that I might have to lean over the table and cut her food up because I’m so used to cutting food up for my kids. She won’t think I’m a weirdo.” If life hadn’t taken her down the comedy route, Urzila says she would be working as a surgeon…” I’d be saving lives… kidding, I’d still be working in advertising and loving it”.

TRAVEL

ARCTIC, ANTARCTICA, ALASKA

- THE THREE A’S OF ADVENTURE CRUISING

A

n expedition is an adventure, experiencing a destination where nature choreographs itself, where wildlife is unleashed, and few men have stepped, and it is remote communities who have no idea of rush hour traffic. It is the most exhilarating and life changing type of travel you can get. Expedition cruising is attracting those who are looking for authentic and unique destinations, who want to connect with the destination, and who relish impacting experiences. Travelling with smaller numbers of likeminded travellers is something Kiwis are responding to and loving. Expedition cruising has taken a quantum leap in the last 20 years, ships are purpose built with shallow drafts, or ice strengthened hulls, are smaller and durable with anything from 22 guests to 400. Expedition ships are designed to probe the deepest, most inaccessible and remote regions on our planet, in a safe and sustainable way, ensuring maximum comfort and experience, with minimum impact on the environment. Zodiacs are often used for ship to shore connection, with expert expedition leaders, historians, cultural experts, zoologists and more escorting you. Education in this environment is fun and addictive. The polar regions are literally opposites. The Arctic in the north, boasts terrestrial animals, most notably the King of the Arctic – the polar bear, plus a host of other fat, furry and feathered creatures you will not find down south in Antarctica. The Arctic has a social and cultural

36

August 2019

interest with an ancient indigenous people dating back 5000 years; Vikings brought the age of early exploration by ship to this region, and 20th century communities have adapted, but still hold onto traditions and life-style. Tauck in partnership with BBC Earth produce some extraordinary journeys through the Arctic and Iceland. All inclusive, and designed to leave no stone unturned, Taucks BBC Earth Journeys are real-life documentaries that cannot be had with any other travel provider. There are a range of other small ship expedition cruises to choose from in the Arctic - Adventure Canada takes you up into the high arctic of Canada to Baffin Island and the North west passage, and others like Silversea will navigate from Greenland all the way to Nome, Alaska. Antarctica is a fantastical landscape of icebergs, whales and penguins. It may be the coldest, windiest and driest place on earth, but during the Austral summer November - February, the continent is at its most spectacular. Love abounds in spring with incredible courtship displays from penguins. Whales are numerous, flowers bloom on the Falklands, and South Georgia has the richest density of wildlife anywhere on earth. Seabourn offers the most unique voyage available in Antarctica. From Santiago to Buenos Aires, with Seabourn you can explore the Patagonian fjords - a treasure trove for flora and fauna enroute to a six day expedition in Antarctica, where Zodiac landings will be at the heart of your adventure.

Seabourn offer premium and luxury experiences, and their new expedition ship Seabourn Venture, will probe even deeper into destinations. Smaller in size, and with 2 submarines on board, she will cruise in Antarctica, and the Arctic region, while taking expedition to new levels, with a full traverse of the verdant Amazon River. 4000 miles in from the Atlantic, with remote tribes, butterflies the size of dinner plates, and birds the size of your finger, it is a botanical, cultural and scenic wonderland. Alaska boasts towering virgin forests, thunderous calving glaciers, wilderness towns, bears and breaching whales, and while there are many large ship options for seeing Alaska, only with the small expedition style cruises can you really

get up close and personal and really experience it. UnCruise Adventure operate smaller boats of up to 84 guests and primarily cruise the wilderness regions out of Juneau. Zodiacs and kayaks ensure easy access to the shoreline where there is frequent animal activity, bush whacking and hiking to get you amongst the undergrowth of this remarkable wilderness destination. Whatever you choose for your next adventure, consider an expedition cruise. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you do need reasonable mobility. In particular, luxury expedition cruising is the new age of cruising, and New Zealanders are flocking to it.

RURAL CHARM, NATURAL BEAUTY AND ONCE IN A LIFE TIME EXPERIENCES STORY: SUSIE WILLIAMS

SUSIE WILLIAMS/SUPPLIED

M

urchison is a stunning two hour drive from Blenheim. What can you expect from a stay in Murchison? Rural charm, natural beauty and once in a life time experiences. Most of us from Marlborough are guilty of knowing Murchison as a town on the way to the West Coast, but come and stay for awhile and experience some of New Zealand’s most amazing scenery, unique experiences and friendliest people.

Murchison’s township is an ode to its gold mining past with many buildings still in their original form from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. In contrast to this charming old world feel is the ability to zip line across the Buller River, walk the longest swing bridge in the southern hemisphere, blast the rivers by jet boat, bike or hike to some of the most amazing vantage points and experience the rare beauty of the ‘Natural Flames’.

The Natural Flames - a ‘MUST-SEE’ natural treasure in the Top of the South. As soon as we climbed aboard the Natural Flames Experience 4WD vehicle, with Steve at the wheel, we were enthralled with details about Murchison and some of its history. On the outskirts of this quiet country town lies an interesting past and an amazing natural wonder. The only access to this magical natural wonder is with the Natural Flames Tours. We pass through private farmland, high up into a beautiful, hidden valley. At the end of the drive we arrive at a tall deer fence, marking the end of the farm, and the start of our hour-long walk. Armed with hiking sticks, we headed towards our promised pancakes! The natural bushland is just that – natural. Our track is more like a stock track but saying that it is easy to navigate. No wide tracks here…just back to nature! Along the way we learn many facts and interesting

things about the native plants, birds and the past. Further into our tramp we come across dense forest, the air as calm, clear and crisp as I have ever encountered. There were more moss species that I have ever seen. Many colours and shapes of mushrooms and toadstools. If you believe in fairies…this is where I think you would find this. The magic surrounding this place I cannot describe, but trust me, it is breath-taking! This is one of those experiences where you feel like the only people on earth, where everything is as natural as the days the Moa were roaming the country. We all felt as though we had been on a long relaxing holiday – this is peace at its best.

Then, when we felt things couldn’t get better and more naturally amazing, we climb a short rise and here we find the most amazing sight. We knew it was here, but to actually see it was spell bounding. The Natural Flames! Who could believe that here, amongst this most beautiful, natural forest is a small clearing with a natural fire pit? Not just a tiny flame burning in the forest, but a clearing with a large fire pit, naturally burning away ever day of the year. All of us stood gasping with our mouths open, finding it hard to believe what we were seeing. So extraordinary!

Once we recovered from our exciting shock…. Steve got to work for the promised campfire pancakes and tea. On went the kettle and the camp plate to cook fresh pancakes. Let me tell you…they were GOOD! Many pancakes, and cups of tea, our last pancake was dessert – pancakes with melted marshmallows. The fire kept us nice and warm, and we all felt like we were on a camping trip. We headed back home through the forest with full bellies, and a heart full of love for the natural New Zealand bush and its most amazing natural wonders.

The Perfect Holiday Destination Arran Tandy moved to Murchison two years ago from Nelson purchasing Riversong Cottages in Fairfax street. He was drawn to Murchison for its beautiful position set in between our two stunning National parks and the gate way to the West coast. The Old Ghost Road biking and tramping track a highlight of the region, prompting Arran’s idea of recently including bike hire and small bike shop to the already established accommodation business.

Keen to explore the Old Ghost Track? For your next hiking or biking adventure – Off the Beaten Track is your perfect base nestled amongst the beautiful native New Zealand Bush.

Arran has recently changed the name to Off the Beaten Track Accommodation & Bike Hire and is in the process of building a new reception and bike shop at the front of the existing garage. This modification enhancing the accommodation business for bikers that stay and anyone that would like to explore the local area by bike. He can thank the career for his move to New Zealand, leaving his native South Australia for the very similar plains of Marlborough with his family in tow in 2003.

As the Regional Viticulture Manager for Constellation Brands in Marlborough, Andrew has responsibility for the wellbeing of four different Marlborough vineyards and Andrew’s wife Helen, and number one their grapes. supporter of 32 years was only too happy “My passion is growing wine,” Andrew says. to join the journey, and the family settled in the Awatere Valley’s Lower Dashwood. “It’s the end product that is important.” Their two sons completed their schooling With an associate degree in applied science at Marlborough Boys’ College, while of wine growing, viticulture was not the first their daughter attended both primary career path Andrew explored. and secondary school in the region, and “I had a go at a lot of things before making the family made short work of getting a career out of viticulture … [but] I enjoyed involved with the Seddon community.

“We had a fairly idyllic life out on the vineyard … and we got very involved in the community out there,” Andrew says. Andrew joined the Seddon Lions Club and remains involved with it despite having made the move into Blenheim. This year, he is president of the club. Being an active member of the community is an important aspect of life, he says. “I think community involvement is essential. You can judge the essence of the community by how much we help each other out. It is just generally about doing your part in looking after the wellbeing of everybody you can and ensuring they feel valued and looked out for.” As a keen mountain biker, Andrew is also involved with the Marlborough Mountain Biking Club. as a mode of transport. Here in Marlborough, he saw the hobby has a way to keep fit, meet new people, and take in the scenery from different purpose-built tracks around the region. “It’s a win win, it’s exercise but also you get a bit of a thrill, and you meet the requirements of the needs of your aging body to stay nimble and fit“ he says. As well as getting out to enjoy Marlborough’s bike tracks, Andrew spends time helping to build new tracks, maintain existing tracks and work with youth mountain bikers both with the club, and at Jentree on the Taylor Pass. Working with young people was a natural progression for Andrew, and fits in well with his community-minded nature.

“It’s just following on from where I left off from raising three kids,” he says. “Some of the Marlborough Mountain Bike Club activities are targeted at the younger ones, honing their skills and encouraging them to get out there and ride their bikes. “There are fairly large numbers of them interested in mountain biking as an alternative to sports, or to complement their other activities.” Andrew’s work as a mentor also extends into the vineyard, where he works with a team of 19, teaching some of them about the work involved in being a regional vineyard manager. Looking back on sixteen years in Marlborough, Andrew says he is happy with the move.

“It was one of those bizarre things that I need to find another job and there was only one job going in Australia and New Zealand and I was lucky enough to get it,” he says. Over the years, Marlborough has presented a lifestyle that fits in well with Andrew’s own warm and welcoming personality. “There’s an element of innocence, it’s uncluttered and uncomplicated, and there’s no traffic lights, people have to eyeball each other and be courteous … I miss the old one lane bridge in Seddon, it forced people to show good manners and be polite,” he says. “[We like] laid back lifestyle, [it’s] like Australia was when I was a kid.”

TIME TO BE YOU

B

eing a stay at home dad, for the most part, is an awesome privilege. However, this school holidays, as I’m sure most parents can relate to, I had the quick reminder that it’s so important to take time for yourself, and to do some things you want to do.

I found myself in a space where I just needed to get out the other day, luckily my wife was home, and so, although bucketing down with rain, I donned the crash helmet and went for a bike ride. It was the most freeing hour that I’d had for the past two weeks.

When you’re at home with three busy kids full time, it’s easy to become a personal taxi driver, cleaner, cook, and referee all at the same time, from breakfast until bed.

As I felt the rain and the elements hit up against my face, and the blood pump

You wind up losing sense of who you really are and the things that make you, you, besides your kids. I end up being a grumpy ball of angst, just waiting for the next argument to referee, and not truly enjoying the benefit of being able to be home with the kids. And that is why I find it so important to remember that you can’t truly take care of someone else, unless you’re taking care of yourself.

STORY: LEE GRIGGS

around my body, I took the time to enjoy how the bike felt underneath me as I coasted down a hill, and then realized that this was one of the few moments that I had had alone the entire school holidays. I came back home with a refreshed sense of wellbeing, and a completely different appreciation for refereeing that next brewing argument over who peed on the toilet seat. It can often feel selfish to need to take the time and be alone, but I know for sure, both my family and I benefit from the results after. Take care for now, and go take the time to be you, not just a parent.

Cheers, Lee

FISH WEARING BLING STORY: JACOB LUCAS, NELSON MARLBOROUGH FISH & GAME

T

rout adorned with coloured tags are now found in a number of waterways in the top of the south.  Each tag is individually numbered and come in an assortment of colours, meaning each release into a certain waterway has its own specific colour and number range.  The trout are tagged at the hatchery, and involves placing the fish in anesthesia and performing a simple tag insertion under the skin. So why do we tag fish? Well, in this region it is done so we can monitor the effectiveness of our releases.  We do this through tag returns (when anglers catch a tagged fish and tell us about it), and also in our drift dive counts - an underwater census of the fish population where tagged fish are sighted by divers as they

42

August 2019

float down the river. Tags also allow us to see what fish get up to – where they go from their point of release. We’ve had trout, for example, which have travelled large distances from their release point, and even some that have navigated obstacles such as dams – in some cases by surviving a drop over the Branch River weir – a dizzying fall of around 5 metres. In the past we have also used small microchips (PIT tags), which are inserted under the skin and have a unique number.  Essentially these are the same microchips that your family pooch is sporting as required by your local council, but are invisible to the naked eye and thus require an electronic reader. Last year one local angler handed in one of these microchips, which he found in a trout he’d just baked for dinner.  Looking back at our records we saw that this fish,

a hen, was caught in the same pool she was released in nearly a decade earlier – a tad unusual for rainbow trout which are known to be fairly transient.  She’d certainly seen better days, which was not surprising considering she was nearing the maximum known age for a rainbow trout – around 11 years old – a remarkable feat for a New Zealand trout having to navigate a lifetime in wild New Zealand waters. Many local anglers get a real kick out of catching a tagged fish and will proudly notify Fish & Game of their catch.  In the past few years we’ve had terrific feedback from anglers catching our tagged fish in a range of waterways, this is gratifying on one level where that the angler has derived enjoyment from catching the fish, but on another level that the release has worked well, and the hatchery trout have adapted to the river environment.

CHANGING THE FUTURE… ONE HAPPY THOUGHT AT A TIME! We have all seen the headlines, heard the statistics, or perhaps connected with personal stories within our circle of family and friends or in the wider community, there are growing issues in our society that many of us are concerned about. Whether it’s mental illness, suicide, child abuse, teen pregnancy, bullying, drugs or another issue, there is something that deeply touches each of our hearts. But when a problem seems so big, it feels like there is nothing we can do, but, maybe there is…

L

ocal mum and businesswoman Nadine Hickman believes if we teach our children how to master their minds and give them dynamic tools to positively manage their thoughts and emotions, we can literally change the future, and she’s founded an initiative called, “One million happy thoughts” to achieve just that. Nadine is not shying away from the fact that this is a very ambitious vision. “A year ago, when I started down this path, I had doubts, but knowledge is power. The more I delved into it, the more my confidence and passion grew. This helped me to gain clarity and the certainty that we CAN change the future by teaching powerful mindset practices to kids”. Nadine credits her progress to date on the people who believed in her vision from day one. Their support has been vital. “It helps that everyone I’ve spoken to, bar none, can resonate with this. We are all touched by the constant headlines that highlight the growing issues we face in our society, and most people either have a personal painful story, or we know someone with one”.

Nadine with Kath Potts from Life Pharmacy, one of the local businesses happy to support this proactive project.

An ex-elite sportsperson, and current yoga/meditation practitioner and teacher, Nadine’s passion comes from experiencing the benefits of having a mindset practice. What started out as a desire to improve mental health and to reduce New Zealand’s alarming suicide statistics, grew into a much larger vision as she realised the wider positive implications to society if a whole generation of children are taught the fundamental skills of mindset mastery. What if that young person who was about to take drugs, had a healthier way to escape from their painful emotions, overcome their boredom, or get mental

stimulation? What if the dad who was about to lash out at his child, had the capacity to let go of his anger? What if the bully who was about to pick on his fellow student or colleague, knew of a kinder way to feel better about himself? What if the teen feeling down, had the ability to pick herself up with self-empowering thoughts? “If we can teach mindset practices to elite sportspeople that enable them to overcome obstacles and achieve outstanding results, why can’t we teach every child in New Zealand similar techniques that will allow them to overcome everyday life challenges and

lead positive, happy lives?”, urges Nadine. “There are more temptations in society than ever before, so kids need a higher level of self-discipline and self-control, these aren’t natural traits we are born with, they need to be taught these things.”

We can teach this stuff, but how? “We can’t just lump this on our schools, they are already overwhelmed and under resourced. But there are incredible programmes to support teachers to become nurturers of brain development and to deliver tools for mindset mastery”, says Nadine. LE

integrated into every aspect of the school curriculum. It doesn’t just nurture student wellbeing, but also staff wellbeing, and focuses on enhancing the whole school culture. Visible Wellbeing™ is a science-based approach, with proven success, developed by renowned psychologist and researcher Professor Lea Waters PhD. Numerous studies have shown that in Visible Wellbeing™ schools, not only does student wellbeing increase, but so does academic achievement. To change the future, requires more than dipping our little finger in. A programme such as Visible Wellbeing™ would need to be adopted at government level and integrated as a core part of the curriculum.

annual nationwide inspiring High School speaking tour bringing top youth speakers from around the world to ignite a spark in our teens, plus investing in high impact programmes already happening in our communities. Nadine is in discussion with several large corporates who have shown interest in supporting this project, but she’s not getting ahead of herself. “Right now, it’s all about getting the momentum going. With enough momentum, anything is possible. There are approximately one million children and teens in NZ, by selling one million happy thoughts, one for each of them, we can kickstart that momentum,” says Nadine, “I believe in the big picture, and I’m determined to go all the way”.

The key outcome of ‘One million happy thoughts’, is to fund the Visible Wellbeing™ programme into a cluster of schools across New Zealand; its success leaving no option but to implement this strategy, or similar, nationwide. Other impacts ‘One million happy thoughts’ will fund include - An

MARINA

Magic

From humble beginnings the Marina2Marina event has grown in both size and popularity, attracting runners from across both Marlborough and further afield.

I

t started seven years ago - a community run to raise money for Waikawa Bay School. With picturesque views across the Sounds, this course is simply breathtaking. For me though, it’s the Snout walkway which draws me back time after time. Living in Auckland, my go-to training run when staying with my parents in Waikawa has always been the Snout walkway. It’s a superb mix of hills, trails, views and bush - always something to look forward to. So, when the Marina2Marina event with the Snout Run came up it was the perfect excuse to spend a weekend in Picton.

46

August 2019

The Snout Run itself was an easy start with a decent climb not far in. This spreads the field a little so it’s a good idea to get to that hill as soon as possible. After that, lots of big ups and downs and amazing views across the Sounds - like nowhere else in the world. This year’s event will see some changes with a new feature. Part of The Link Pathway between Anakiwa and Picton included for the first time. The Link Pathway project began in 2005; a vison to build stronger links between inner Marlborough Sounds communities. As initial pathways were created, the

idea grew. Hard-work and tenacity saw other pathways gradually take shape. The section between Anakiwa and Picton was completed in late 2018. It’s set to be a great addition to an already wonderful experience. Competitors have the option of enjoying an early morning cruise with Beachcomber Cruises from London Quay, Picton to the start line at Anakiwa. They then face the challenge of running 24km (just over a half marathon) through native bush, around the stunning bays of the Queen Charlotte Sounds, and down to the finish line at London Quay, Picton. The Link 24km is not for the faint hearted, and therefore is only open to the experienced runner. The daunting task of running over Wedge Point comes at the end of the run, and competitors will need to pace themselves.

Returning is the iconic Snout run, a 13km race from London Quay, Picton over Victoria Domain to the end of the Snout and back. Previously this has been a runner only race. This year it will be open to walkers. The Marina2Marina 9km walk and run is a popular choice with families and groups as is the ever popular 2km Kids Dash. It’s really well organised, more relaxed than the North Island events I have done (which is a good thing!) and it’s great to support local schools and not for profit groups. The first year that I did the run I may have been the only runner from Auckland. However, I’m sure word has got around and with the addition of the Link Run this year there should be much wider interest from around the country. I predict the Link Run will be the next “bucket list” one.

with the profits going back to the local community. In previous years the event has been organised by members of the Waikawa Bay School community as their annual fundraiser. Due to the events growth the funds raised this year will be distributed to various community groups and schools. If there has been some rain, the track can be quite muddy in parts, this adds another dimension and good grip makes a difference. You are never far from a marshal, there are loads of fantastic volunteers out there ready to help if you need it. At the end there are so many spot prizes the prizegiving never seems to end! If you are really lucky (like I was) there may be a prize of a luxury night away at Punga Cove Resort - a great reason to go back to Picton ASAP!

DIARY OF A HYPNOTIST HYPNOTHERAPY NOT ENTERTAINMENT!

Last week, a client came to see me. She was so nervous, it was painful to see – admittedly, she had come for anxiety. She had a great fear that I was ‘going to take control’ of her mind, and make her pretend she was a chicken or some such foolishness. Nothing could be further from the truth. The stage performers have a lot to answer for! So, what is hypnotherapy, and what can it do for you. The simple and short answer is that it moves people from where they are, to where they want to be. This of course applies to everything, from giving up smoking to losing weight, to regaining a sense of calm, to saving a relationship. Having settled them in my super comfy chair, my first question will often be,“If I had a magic wand, how would you want

48

August 2019

to feel when you walked out of my door? What do you want, and where would you like to be?” I explain that I never try and take control, or impose ways of doing things on them. I harness their imagination to help them realise that there are better and more effective ways to achieve their goals. So for weight loss or smoking, they no longer have to ‘diet’ or go ‘cold turkey’. These methods relying on willpower alone or medical supplements, can often work short term, but then they often return to the habit which has been running them for a long time. In contrast, hypnosis is a collaborative event, in which the hypnotist becomes the facilitator, not the director. The therapist is just a guide. Furthermore, the temporary abandonment of the conscious mind, with its continuous state of alert, and its replacement with the sub-conscious, is in itself a ‘trip’ that is in itself a pleasurable experience. When Lorraine came to see me to lose weight, she told me that I would find her a challenge. I quietly explained that if there were to be a challenge, it would be her challenging herself. We had an excellent first session, but she told me at the end of the session that it hadn’t worked, she had heard every word I said, and, although

enjoyable, the session had probably been useless. When she returned the following week, I asked her how the week had gone. Her reply: “It was really strange. I left thinking the two hours were a waste of time, but I then felt so happy and relaxed during the week. That chocolate, which had been like a magnet for me, now became as interesting as a packet of soap powder. I couldn’t believe how un-hungry I was, but also how quickly I became satisfied with the smaller portions I was choosing and how good the food tasted. Really weird”. We laughed together. To date, Lorraine has lost 20kgs. And Clare, who has suffered panic attacks and anxiety for the best part of her life, now feels as though she is wearing an invisible coat which is protecting her from outside pressures and stresses. She says she has forgotten what it feels like to panic. Mike, a 30 cigarettes-a- day smoker, has no longer wanted or needed a cigarette since his first session with me - and so the list goes on….. So, if you or someone dear to you needs help, don’t hesitate, just give me a call and we can have a quick chat.

PROUD TO BE LOCA L

MIA YEALANDS MY RECYCLED WARDROBE snow on the mountains and in summer the green leafy grape vines. Coming from West Australia you appreciate the greenery! Three words that describe how someone would feel coming into your shop... Welcome, important and appreciated! What is unique about your shop? Probably me. I really try to converse with everyone who walks in, it’s not so much about the sale but the fact they have thought about buying re-cycled. What is something about you that people may not know?

What do you love most about Marlborough? I love Marlborough’s natural beauty, the beautiful scenic sounds, the forests, the hills. When it’s winter you can see

I used to drive the big trucks in the mines being one of the first female drivers in the early 90’s. How would you describe “A great day at work” A great day at work is always when someone finds something amazing to wear! I am not a stylist but when I choose something for them to try and they love it, I know I am in the right job.

What 3 celebrities or special people would you like to work with? John Bishop the comedian, I quite fancy him and he’s hilarious. My late Grandmother, she would have appreciated everything I’m doing and she always had the best hugs. Lastly would be David Attenborough, what an amazing human. Where does the inspiration or motivation for your business come from? The inspiration really came from myself, being in other jobs that I wasn’t happy in. You really do have to think about what you love and how you can make a working wage from it, look at what makes you happy and what gravitates you towards certain things. What’s next on your wish list? Stand-up comedy. What’s your favourite way to spend an “Idle Moment”? Going through recycled shops looking for something awesome, for me it’s stress relief.
