Our famous Garden Marlborough is set to take over the region in November, offering a plethora of garden and landscaping inspiration. Be sure to head down to the annual Garden Fete to indulge in our community’s largest free market. The Marlborough Wedding Fair is on in October, helping couples with their wedding plans. After tying the knot myself earlier this year, I know how helpful an event like this can be for anyone planning a wedding. Check out our Wedding Showcase in this edition to learn more. We also have plenty of home and living inspiration packed into this edition, so make the most of the ‘spring’ in your step and embrace the new season.

AN EVENT TO SAVOUR

The Ray White Savour in the Park, brought to you by Pure Events Marlborough, has become a highly anticipated gastronomic celebration of all our region has to offer and is returning on November 23. Now in its third year, this tasty festival will once again transform the Churchill Glade in Pollard Park into a focal point for Marlborough’s food and beverage excellence.

Everything from local seafood to BBQ meats, Asian street food, Mexican cuisine, and gourmet burgers will be available, while the popular Long Acre Farm Kitchen returns to offer their free-range produce. Sweet Creations will provide their famous ‘edible works of art’, from cupcakes to gateaux, while Marlborough's renowned libations will be represented by Yealands Wines with local beer merchants Boom Town Brewing Company and DNA Brewing. Alongside there will be a variety of cocktail stalls, including Alchemist offering spritzer based cocktails, Event Hire Fruzo frozen cocktails and Kiwi Spirit Distillery with their natural products, beautifully crafted into vodka and gin based beverages.

“I love the ambience we have created in the park,” says Katrina Lange, Events Director at Pure Events Marlborough. “It’s really unique with the selection of food and beverages and, of course, fab entertainment that gets everyone on the dance floor!”

Music this year includes Danger80s, New Zealand’s premier tribute act to the decade of music everybody knows and loves, and headlining is one of the few New Zealand musicians so legendary that his band

carries his name – Jordan Luck eagerly anticipates returning to Marlborough for Savour in the Park: “The last few gigs we had here were phenomenal, and we’re looking forward to entertaining Marlborough again.”

The Jordan Luck Band are back on the road again until early next year, but he claims it never feels like work and keeps him young. “Studio recording is fine, but playing live, that’s where it’s at,” he enthuses.

“Touring, seeing the nation, meeting people, and performing the songs you love – that’s the best thing.”

Jordan promises a very memorable show for Savour in the Park: “At the moment, we’re on fire. The crowd will need those fireproof jackets that firemen wear, because we’ll be incendiary – especially if we get that great Marlborough weather!”

While you’re having a great time in the glade, the organisers stress that while the majority of stallholders have EFTPOS, there is no ATM facility on-site, so it is advisable to bring some cash.

Katrina Lange emphasises the importance of these celebrations, which bring so many visitors and other benefits to Marlborough. “The Regional Events Fund is coming to an end next year, and we’re very grateful that it enabled us to launch Savour in the Park.

Everyone says this is a fabulous event, but we really need attendees’ support so we can continue to bring this awesome festival to the region.”

BlueBerryIT and CommArc create a merger for the future

Founded in 2008, BlueBerryIT is a leading IT services provider for the Top of the South, who have merged with CommArc to create a powerhouse in New Zealand’s IT services sector. Marlborough Magazine sits downs with BlueBerryIT founder Richard Butler to discuss what this means for the business.

What were the key factors that led to the collaboration between BlueBerryIT and CommArc?

The merger was an obvious next step for both of us. CommArc was looking to expand its reach across the South Island, while BlueBerryIT sought to enhance its capabilities in the Top of the South. Coming together was the perfect way to achieve both of those goals. CommArc brings incredible skills and experience in the professional services industries, particularly with lawyers and accountants. Their 30-year tenure in Christchurch speaks to their expertise. With their own datacentre infrastructure (private cloud), we can now offer our clients the ability to store commercially sensitive data within New Zealand, which is a significant advantage.

How well do each company’s core values and visions align, and how will you blend the best aspects of both teams?

Both businesses have built their reputations on a relationship and service-based model. We deeply understand that without our customers, we are nothing. Our “people-first” approach to technology is central to how we recruit, choose our suppliers, and seek new customers. While technology is a tool, our primary focus is on the people who use it. Culture was the first topic we discussed during the merger talks. Without

cultural alignment, nothing else mattered. Both businesses wear their culture with pride, and it was clear from the outset that our values aligned perfectly.

What are your long-term goals for the merged company?

We want everyone in the community to know that we intend to continue our local focus, now with a broader range of capabilities. We’re excited to talk to anyone interested in what we can now offer. We are better together! Our aim is to cement our position as the leading IT services provider in the South Island. Bringing the two businesses together is a huge step toward achieving that goal. We will maintain and potentially grow our team on the ground here in Nelson and Blenheim. Continuing to work closely with our clients, we’ll build both our technical and account management capabilities. Our continued focus on “people-first” will ensure we continue to deliver on that. BlueBerryIT will continue its strong regional community involvement. We are active supporters of Hospice, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Safeguarding Children, Fifeshire Foundation, Top of the South Community Foundation, Nelson Netball, and many others. Our commitment to the community remains strong.

Getting to know... Charlie Fairhall-McLean

A sixth-generation Marlburian, Charlie channels her deep connection to the land and community into her real estate work at Bayleys Marlborough, where she’s proud of their principal sponsorship of Garden Marlborough this year. Charlie shares her passions, pet peeves and a few of her favourite local spots.

At the weekend you’ll find me… I might be down at the family bach or fishing out at D’Urville; that is, if I’m not showing or staging beautiful homes around Marlborough. If you fail to find me, I’ll most definitely be on one of my horses, either Vogue or Flash.

I’m a real nerd about… Keeping the house clean and tidy, I believe a tidy house is a tidy mind... and my Dyson is way more than just a vacuum. If you have one, I’m sure you’ll agree.

My most useful skill is… 100% has to be backing a trailer or driving a 21-tonne truck. Growing up on a farm and helping with the harvest, these were skills I learnt at an early age, which have become very handy.

I get my coffee fix from… Streetwise Coffee. Not only do they remember your coffee order, but the service is always with a smile that goes a long way to make someone’s day. I also love the fact they use ‘Havana Coffee,’ which is founded by a family friend.

I get myself out of a funk by… Turning on some country music and getting outside in the fresh air, soaking up the large backyard Marlborough has to offer.

My biggest pet peeve is… A laden camellia tree. I love trees and gardening, but I had to make the heartbreaking decision recently to remove a large tree at home because it continued to shower the lawn and deck with pink confetti, much to the amusement of my flatmates, who watched me constantly rake it up in the dark – OCD got the better of me.

I am most passionate about… My job, my family, and of course, my animals. Real estate, for me, isn’t just a career but a calling that fulfils me, helping people with one of the biggest decisions in life, while my family provides unwavering support and love. My animals add a special touch of companionship and make every day richer and more meaningful.

My biggest regret is… I’d have to say not working on the superyachts in the Mediterranean for longer. Four and a half years went by way too fast and just wasn’t long enough, but I sure hold some incredible memories and stories about the rich and famous.

My favourite memory growing up… This one’s easy: playing hide and seek as a child in my grandparents’ crop fields on Wratts Road. It may be planted in grapes now, but I’ll always cherish those memories.

Thriving through togetherness

“People, people who need people, are the luckiest people in the world,” goes the song. Have you noticed that spending time with good friends or being with a group of people who share your interests leaves you with a sense of well-being?

We humans are intrinsically social creatures. Being connected with others nurtures positive selfesteem, keeps our brains stimulated and can provide emotional and physical support. It also helps broaden our interests and engagement with the world around us and can even help us live longer.

Joining a group can be a great way to develop friendships and share life experiences. It is also an opportunity to be exposed to different perspectives and interact with people from other backgrounds and cultures, which encourages empathy, tolerance and appreciation.

For those looking for a group to be part of, Marlborough has an extraordinary array of options available, no matter your age, interests or abilities, as Adrienne Matthews finds out.

The Cultural Collective

Marlborough is a multicultural region, with people from all over the globe making it their home. Since 2021, members of the Cultural Collective have been meeting weekly at the Community Hub. During Covid times, Michele Cox was working as a refugee support person for the Red Cross. There were a number of Columbian people arriving who were keen on sewing, so Michelle and others got them together, and with the help of sewing machines from REAP Marlborough, taught them how to sew. “They were eager to make reusable masks, and that progressed to teaching them how to do alterations to clothing purchased from op shops,” she says.

“Rohingya refugees started arriving from Myanmar and wanted to join, so we moved to a larger space in the Marlborough Community Centre.”

They now have people from a range of cultures who come together to sew with the help of a great bunch of volunteers. One week, they work on their own clothing projects and the next week, the focus is on something for the community. Lately, they have been repurposing woollen blankets which go to the paediatric ward at the hospital for mothers who don’t have enough warm bedding for their children. The group has been successful at providing a safe

space for women to meet regularly. Many have been through considerable trauma and are without extended family support, so they appreciate the regular contact with the volunteers. “They tell us they feel so grateful for the support the Marlborough community has given them and want to give something back,” says Michele.

“We are grateful to people who donate sewing equipment and fabric, and it is our goal that some of these women will soon be able to operate small businesses repairing garments and making clothing to sell.”

Marlborough Youth Trust (MYT)

The Marlborough Youth Trust is actively engaged in providing many opportunities for young people aged 12 to 24 to interact socially through a range of groups and programmes that offer support, activities and the chance to create new friendships.

The trust’s base is the Myspace Youth Centre in Blenheim at 18 Kinross Street. Jo Lane, a qualified youth worker, has been the centre’s manager for the last five years.

“Connections are so important to young people,” she says. “Here, we give them a safe place to come and connect with youth workers and each other through providing a range of activities such as coffee making, games, crafts, music and movies. If they are getting ready to leave school, our Youth Employability Programme helps them prepare CVs, and we invite speakers from a range of organisations to provide information about local jobs and industries. Most nights, Myspace has various activities going on.”

MYT has also run the CACTUS youth grit and resilience programme with the support of Marlborough District Council, NZ Police and Marlborough Lines.

MYT Youth worker Maxine Sweeney works alongside the Rainbow Group, who meet once a week at Myspace. “They are self-motivated, with the older members taking on leadership roles,” she says. “They appreciate having a place to go where they feel comfortable, and they’ve got a cool circle of friendship going.”

The MYT welcomes donations and contributions of food as they continue to support the young people of the region.

Harakeke Hubs

There’s plenty of research to show that loneliness is a big factor in diminishing people’s wellbeing, and that's one of the reasons why Harakeke Hubs coordinator Ailsa Carey says she wanted to set up the Harakeke Hubs. “So people can come together for a cup of tea and be connected to something or some group that might give them another interest. At the meetings we introduce them to the Marlborough Community Directory, which is a one-stop-shop for information about the array of organisations in our region, including support services and health care.”

Currently there are Harakeke Hubs meeting in Blenheim, Pelorus and Rai Valley.

Becky Chin and her business partner, Dr. Shilinka Smith moved to Marlborough recently and went to their first Harakeke Hub meeting in January. “It was so welcoming,” says Becky. “It was a great way to learn about what is available here, and the experience was so positive. It helped us to feel part of the community.”

“There is so much going on here, and to learn about it all would take ages to find all the information out through websites. This was such a good way to access information about things we were interested in as well as being a great place to meet people,” adds Shilinka.

Thanks to their experience at the Hub, the pair, who run a social enterprise, now feel they can make their own contributions to the Marlborough community.

Picton has a similar hub operating at the Picton Library and Service Centre – Waitohi Whare Mātauranga – called the Company Café, which is a popular gathering place for the community.

Maternal Mental Well-Being Marlborough

Fostering good connections is important at all stages of life, and particularly for those approaching the birth of their baby. Maternal Mental Well-Being Marlborough (MMWM) began with a small group in 2011 and was joined by local counsellor Tatiana Ceban in 2013 to support mothers with postnatal depression and anxiety. MMWM now provides essential support and tools for both mothers and mothers-to-be, empowering them to manage their mental health through free courses for both pre-natal and postnatal mothers.

“It takes a village to raise a child,” says Mandy Li, chairperson of MMWM. “Among the services we offer are therapeutic groups which teach women tools to handle what can be a tough transition to motherhood for some. The group provides reassurance while also nurturing valuable parentto-parent relationships at what can be a challenging time, particularly for new parents.”

Integral to the success of the groups are the volunteer ‘baby cuddlers’, a generous group who care for the babies while mothers attend their sessions.

“We welcome sponsors and kind people who are happy to spend two or three hours a week holding a baby,” she says.

“By supporting our mothers, we support the entire family on this special and precious journey, creating a better future for generations and a stronger, closer community.”

The Menz Shed

Menz Sheds are an opportunity for men with time on their hands to enjoy some camaraderie while making and repairing things. The Marlborough region has five Menz Sheds located in Blenheim, Havelock, Rarangi, Picton and Renwick.

The Blenheim Menz Shed has just celebrated its 12year anniversary. “We have building and engineering workshops along with a place to refurbish bicycles,” explains president Dave Oliver.

In addition to men undertaking their own individual projects, the group is involved in community ones.

“We’ve got a fairly big bike recycling program going,” says Dave. “We get bikes donated, clean them up and fix them before they go back into the community to people who need them.”

Other projects have included repairing and building furniture and fittings for individuals and charitable organisations, schools and kindergartens, building traps for predator programs and laying non-slip matting on a Grove Town Lagoon walkway.

“The shed attracts men from all walks of life and is a great place for guys to have a bit of company. It’s also a good way to share experience, upskill and learn something new,” says Dave.

People who realise they need people in Marlborough are spoilt for choice with the range of groups available where they can get together with others, share experiences and interests, and develop great friendships. Whether you are looking to learn a new skill, find emotional support, or simply meet new friends, Marlborough’s array of social groups provides something for everyone.

Each assessment allows for bespoke treatment plans addressing current concerns while proactively working to prevent future issues. “Among the sought-after treatments are neuromodulators such as Botox, which target the hyperactive muscles causing jaw tension and migraines, providing relief in addition to enhancing appearance,” says Janine. “I also utilise dermal fillers to restore volume and structure, helping to regain facial contours that contribute to a youthful appearance.”

In its commitment to combating the signs of ageing, Bezar offers skin boosters and advanced microneedling treatments enhanced with scripted growth factors designed to rejuvenate the skin at a cellular level, improving texture and promoting a natural, youthful glow. evolving skin needs. Janine is supported by a large team of professionals who provide additional clinical expertise when approaching complex skin concerns.

Reflecting on the past year, Janine expressed pride in the strides Bezar has made. “Our goal is to address long-term skin concerns and foster a supportive environment for all ages. In doing so, we aim to empower our clients to feel informed and confident in their skin health journey.”

As part of its commitment to comprehensive care, Bezar is excited to announce the development of a skin cancer clinic. This offering will provide essential skin checks and the removal of non-cancerous lesions, ensuring clients have access to the full scope of skin health management. Janine emphasises the importance of regular skin checks and encourages clients to stay proactive about their skin health.

To celebrate its anniversary, Bezar is offering exclusive deals for long-term clients, visit Bezar’s social media pages for more information. These specials not only acknowledge the loyalty of their clients but also promote ongoing health and vitality through consistent skin treatments.

Julia’s new chapter

A stroke of good luck had Julia Davidson’s life path veer suddenly in a new direction, one that she walked alone, doing things her way. A breast cancer survivor, she shares her story in honour of International Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.

Words: Britt Coker

It was 2017, and Julia’s results from her standard two-yearly mammogram check gave her the allclear. Then, a month later, a new high-tech machine arrived at Nelson Hospital. Not having enough women that matched the trial criteria, they extended a rescreening offer to Blenheim women, including Julia. The machine picked up something suspect in her right breast. However, it was a week before Christmas, and they said they wouldn’t do anything until February because they couldn’t get enough tissue to do a biopsy. Julia wasn’t keen on this plan.

“I said, 'I'm going to put my bed in hospital. I will stay the night, and I will not leave this hospital until you get enough to send off.' My insistence won them over. They phoned overseas and got permission to carry on. They sent the tissue off, and they thought there was a large tumour hidden under calcification, and it was also in my lymph nodes.” Unfortunately, they were right.

Naturally, Julia was ‘gutted and distraught’ at the diagnosis and believes the cancer had manifested after a stressful marriage breakup five months earlier. She had surgery in Wellington for a full mastectomy and reconstruction of her right breast, plus removal of three lymph nodes from her armpit. Breast reconstruction is usually done at a later date, but Julia pushed to have it at the same time. Post-surgery, she had four drains in her chest and was placed in a reconstruction ward. “I had to walk down every day to the TV room and sit with all these blokes, which was not a great place to be when you've had breast cancer and you're the only woman in a room

surrounded by guys there because they're having reconstruction due to sporting injuries or workrelated injuries. I made it my mission to get out of there as fast as possible.”

She had a sister in Wellington she could stay with. But the hospital wouldn’t let her leave until she was well enough to have at least two of the four drains removed. Julia meditated on this. Literally. Every day, meditating and visualising the fluids draining away, her surgical incisions healed quicker than the hospital expected, and as soon as two of the drains were no longer needed, she left to recover further with her family before returning to Blenheim and eight weeks of chemo. And a return to work.

Julia had been a medical herbalist for 35 years and decided she wasn’t going to share her cancer journey with her clients at this time. When her hair fell out thanks to chemo, she had her head shaved and opted for a wig. One of her clients noticed something different.

“She said, ‘Oh my God, you look amazing. Your holiday to Rarotonga must have done you the world of good.’ My Rarotonga holiday was my surgery in Wellington. And then she said, ‘I love your new hairstyle, where did you get that?’ Oh, a friend of my sister in Wellington, so she can't do it for you. So she goes home, and next minute, there's a phone call, ‘I just want to thank you so much. I went home and told my husband that my therapist looks a million dollars and she's tanned from a trip to Rarotonga, and he's taking me on holiday.’”

When Julia returned to Wellington to undergo radiotherapy, she made sure to eat well and took plenty of ginger to counter any nausea. “I did everything that I could to get myself healthy. I was doing all my meditation. I went to yoga classes that the Cancer Society provides in Wellington. I went for walks in nature with my family in Wellington. … It's so important to have good support when you're going through cancer. And I just tried to look at it as a positive because I knew it was in my lymph nodes. Two of my friends died of breast cancer because they chose not to do medicine, and I believe that they would be alive today if they had. It is medicine that saved my life and everything else I did enhanced that treatment. I strongly believe that.”

With all her treatment completed, Julia ‘started her life again’. Continuing to eat well, meditate, and exercise. Her experience inspired her to write a book to help other cancer patients going through the experience, Cancer: The Best of Both Worlds | One woman’s fight against cancer using natural and modern medicines. Her career as a medical herbalist came in handy.

“For each stage, I share advice about what I did. So, for example, during radiotherapy, I took Vitamin C and zinc, Coenzyme Q10, black cohosh, grapeseed oil, turmeric, and mushrooms. I rested and slept in, I had nutritious food. I drank lots of water and green tea. I walked for 30 minutes every day.”

Julia doesn’t make any money from the book; instead, all the proceeds go to pay for ‘Julia’s Bras’, which are made in Wellington especially for breast cancer patients while waiting for treatment. Not one to do anything by halves, she also came up with skin creams to minimise chemotherapy and radiation burns. The essential oils she uses were based on advice she received from a friend who happened to be a senior oncologist at Penny Brohn UK (formerly the Bristol Cancer Help Centre), a cancer charity with a mind/body/spirit focus. During treatment, Julia applied her cream five times a day and experienced no radiation burns (a high majority of patients do).

Although her own experience is now seven years behind her, cancer is still a big part of Julia’s life, but mostly because she sells her creams and her book for others to benefit from. In addition, with this month being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she’s

also organised a raffle and is holding a breakfast (in December) to raise money to fund the manufacture of more Julia’s Bras.

Julia also wanted to share some suggestions from her book for the friends, family and work colleagues of patients, and what they might find difficult to say:

“I want you to know that you are there for me and will support me. If I'm feeling low, I can talk to you without being judged or feeling that I am a burden. I need to have fun, forget about my diagnosis, and have a laugh. Sometimes I feel anxious and can't explain why my moods change frequently, so forgive me if I'm grumpy or tired and don’t feel like seeing you today. I want to hear only good stories about people who have survived cancer and treatment. Be confident you have hope for my future. I don’t want to know that surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy are wrong for me and are harmful. I have made my own informed choices. Under no circumstances tell me you know how I feel. Even if you have experienced cancer, your experience would have been different from mine. I am not my cancer. I am me.”

The information shared in this article is based on Julia Davidson’s personal experiences and is intended for general informational purposes only. Always seek the advice of your doctor or other qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition or treatment.

Finding home through dance

Robert and Elena Hela travelled thousands of kilometres from other parts of the world to live in New Zealand, where they serendipitously met thanks to their love of salsa dancing. Elena came from a small town in Eastern Europe at sixteen, while Robert arrived with his family from the Philippines when he was seventeen. Having recently relocated to Marlborough from Auckland, the couple talk to Adrienne Matthews about their lives before and after finding their ‘piece of paradise’.

Ihad learnt about this part of the world at school and leapt at the chance to come here for my last few years at secondary school. My mum was freaking out at the idea of me coming alone, but my dad was excited for me to have the opportunity. After I finished school, I stayed on and studied for a Bachelor of Business at university. [Elena]

Like many immigrant families, my parents wanted a better life for us. I had already completed one year of university in Information Systems in the Philippines when my family came here. While studying, I saw an advertisement for the Air Force, who were looking for recruits. That sparked my interest straight away, and I successfully applied, going on to become an avionics technician. [Robert]

Elena and I both started dancing salsa in 2012 while living in Auckland. I had represented New Zealand at the World Salsa Summit in Miami and was a member of the Auckland Dance Company. Despite being part of the same Latin dance community, we didn’t actually meet until an opportunity arose to be part of a show in Sydney. Both of us had taken a year off from dancing when I got a call from a dancer friend who was putting together a team to perform at a Latin dance festival in Australia. It turned out Elena had received the same call, and we met for the first time at the initial rehearsal. We were both nearing the end of our performing careers, so the festival became our first and last opportunity to dance together – but it also marked the beginning of our relationship. [Robert]

In 2019, we started our Northwest Salsa dance school to share our passion for dance with others. It’s been amazing to see how quickly people develop their dancing skills and the joy it brings them. [Elena]

Elena was keener than me initially. I was more interested in the performance side but she encouraged me to have a go and I soon discovered there was an instructor inside of me I hadn’t known was there. It was so fulfilling to see people who had never danced be able to move their feet and actually enjoy themselves after only a few weeks of lessons. [Robert]

Two years ago, Elena and I got married and welcomed our daughter, which completely changed my life. While my job was thrilling, the frequent last-minute deployments for military service left me feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from my family. When the opportunity arose to become an avionics instructor at Woodbourne, I was thrilled because it meant we could finally build the family life we had always wanted. [Robert]

Moving to Marlborough has been wonderful. You walk out the door and see the Wither Hills. There is a vineyard over our back fence, and being close to nature is so peaceful. When I first came to New Zealand, I couldn’t get over how green it is all year round. Where I lived in Eastern Europe, we had harsh winters with temperatures dropping to -30°C. You didn’t see green for long periods of time. The people here are so friendly too and we have loved being able to set up our dance studio in Marlborough to teach salsa. [Elena]

The culture here is vastly different from the Philippines. There, everything is so crowded that no one has much personal space. You get really comfortable being up close and personal with strangers on a bus or train. Here, if someone is within armslength, you’re like, “Hey, why is that person so close?”

We definitely have a great lifestyle here. There are some disadvantages, like not always being able to buy what you need and having to order it from elsewhere, or not being able to go to a barber for a haircut on Sunday, but those are minor things. [Robert]

The hardest part is being so far away from family, but from the moment I arrived in New Zealand, I threw myself into the local culture. I gravitated toward Kiwis rather than fellow Europeans because I knew that getting my English right was a priority, and that decision has really paid off. Both of us embraced New Zealand life from the start, which has helped us build strong relationships and fit in. [Elena]

It’s so important to embrace the country you’re living in by experiencing and learning about its culture. You never forget your origins, but if you really want to meet people and enjoy what your new country has to offer, you need to put those aside. For us, there’s no going back – we’ve been so warmly welcomed by Marlborough and its people that we can’t imagine being anywhere else. [Robert]

LEFT. The couple welcomed their daughter two years ago. 1. Robert’s role as an avionics instructor at Woodbourne brought the family to Marlborough. 2. TAfter immigrating here from the Philippines (Robert) and Eastern Europe (Elena), the couple says, ‘there’s no going back.’ Marlborough is now home for their young family. 3. Elena and Robert met while representing New Zealand in salsa dancing. Their love for salsa continues today through their dance company, Northwest Salsa. Supplied.

A kindgolden of love

Weekend adventures spent gold mining became a treasured chapter in Karl and Leah’s love story, culminating in a beautiful discovery – enough gold to create their own wedding rings.

Words: Adrienne Matthews

Unscripted Love - Photography by Aimée Preston

The sparkle and allure of gold has captured people’s imagination for centuries, and in 2009, the drive to find it became Marlborough-born Karl Cunningham’s passion.

“A friend and I had read Mike Johnston’s book Gold in a Tin Dish on the history of the Wakamarina Goldfield and were fascinated by the stories and photos of the lives of the miners back in the 1800s,” says Karl. “The whole history of gold in New Zealand was so interesting, and it was enough to encourage us to get out and explore the old gold mining areas around this region for ourselves.”

The thirst for exploration soon turned into a passion, which is now a full-time gold extraction business that Karl has been working in ever since. The love for gold even took him to Mongolia for three years to search for the shiny stuff.

“That was an adventure,” he says. “Another Kiwi miner, Danny Walker, has a mining operation over there, so I went to help him explore it. We lived in a camp Danny established and were mining from midMarch until November when the rivers froze over.

It was an area very like the Lindis Pass, with a wide valley and hills in the background. The Mongolian people are great, really warm and loyal. They are heavily into wrestling and even have a national week off each year called Naadam to celebrate it. The biggest challenge was the Mongolian diet, which consists mostly of boiled meat,” he laughs.

Five years ago, when the Covid epidemic hit, Karl moved back to his hometown in Marlborough and reconnected with Leah Newman, who had been a friend for years. Love blossomed, and it wasn’t long

before Leah, an early childhood teacher, caught the gold fever herself.

“We started spending our weekends taking off into the wilderness with my two sons to look for gold. It was fascinating to go places where we could see old mining relics and equipment from the old mine workings –buckles, picks and the like – and even more exciting when we found gold ourselves,” she says.

When the couple began planning their wedding, they had found enough gold from one of their claims to have it turned into wedding rings. They took twenty grams to Nelson jeweller Glen James, who melted it down and transformed it into a pair of beautiful, rolled gold rings.

Karl and Leah’s wedding day was made even more special by having some of their photos taken alongside the Wakamarina River.

“It’s really special place to us because it’s where Karl first fell in love with gold,” says Leah.

Revitalise your skin with a tailored touch

IUtilising an inside-out approach to skin correction, the owner of Skin Perfection, Karen Black, brings over 15 years of expertise in skincare to help you find an easy way to guarantee future skin health. Here’s what she had to say about Advanced Skin Analysis:

s your skincare routine feeling a bit… routine? Maybe it's time for a new approach! An Advanced Skin Analysis. It is like a custom blueprint for your best skin – a tailored plan that reveals exactly what your skin needs and why. Imagine the difference between an off-the-rack outfit and one that's made just for you. That's the power of a personalised skincare plan! As a skin care therapist, I'm passionate about skincare and its intricate connections, cause and effect, so I'm always training, learning, and digging deeper, refining my methods to bring you the best in skincare.

So, let me introduce you to Face Up – a gamechanger in the world of facials. I've incorporated this innovative component into my advanced skin analysis so we can be more detailed in composing your customised plan and assessment. A personalised programme will be developed based on the information gathered, focusing on the interconnections between skin health, gut health, and posture.

The Sculpt and Release Face Up method isn't your average treatment; it's a facial sculpting massage that dives deep, working on your facial muscles, circulation, and lymphatic system. It's like a workout for your face, leaving you not just looking great but feeling amazing too.

What sets Face Up apart? It's all about connection. We often carry tension in our face, jaw, and even posture without realising how much it impacts our appearance and mood. Frequent computer work, office hours, sitting at the desk, or even heavy weightlifting in the

gym, creates tension in various parts of the body. Face Up helps release that tension, making you feel lighter and more in tune with your body.

Our bodies are designed to move. Muscles need to move, pump blood, and bring oxygen to our tissues. When we start relying on quick fixes that stop those muscles from moving, we're not just affecting our appearance – we’re impacting other systems in our body too. Over time, something has to give, and that's when we start seeing the knock-on negative effects in our facial structures.

Face Up is all about balance, release and getting things moving again – your muscles, your circulation, your energy. It helps with muscle movement, circulation, and fluid stagnation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and bones. The result? A face that not only looks more vibrant but feels more alive. This method is about embracing your natural beauty with a holistic touch. With every session, you'll see the glow and you'll feel the difference.

Why you'll love the Face Up method:

• Eases tension in your face and jaw

Boosts circulation and lymph drainage

Supports graceful aging naturally

Enhances your emotional and physical well-being

• Aligns posture, breathing, and facial structure

On the Street

Architectural designer and jewellery maker

Zoe, aka Mrs Rockett, shares her unique style, love of accessories, and an unforgettable fashion incident involving a rabbit.

What are you wearing today?

Today, I’m wearing pink jeans paired with red cowboy boots that I found at an op-shop. My top features a cat print from Princess Highway. Over that, I’m wearing a denim jacket that I’ve personalised by adding a positive quote on the back. My earrings are handmade by me, inspired by a poppy flower from the incredible Rachael at Gray Floral Nursery.

What is your style?

As a designer, I view clothes through three essential lenses: do they fit the purpose, do they work with my body, and am I expressing myself? My daily life, especially as a mum of two, often finds me in older clothes that I don’t mind getting messy. However, when I’m heading to a kid-free meeting, there’s a good chance I’ll brush my hair and present myself a bit more polished. While I generally gravitate towards autumnal colours, I’m irresistibly drawn to bold tones that make a statement.

What are you loving at the moment?

Right now, I’m really into hoops – I love accessories. With kids, my body has gone through lots of different sizes, so I’m always grateful that my earrings still fit. It’s an easy way to jazz up a standard outfit.

Where do you buy most of your clothes from?

My wardrobe is a bit of a mix. I have a few favourite spots, including op-shops and Gorman – though their cuts don’t always suit my shape. I’m all about the hunt for interesting pieces that stand out.

What is your approach to shopping?

Shopping, for me, is more of an experience than a task. I love to browse and chat with people in the shops, always curious to hear their stories and find out what they like. I’m forever on the lookout for interesting pieces that resonate with me.

What has been your worst clothing disaster?

My worst clothing disaster is a toss-up between sneaking my pet rabbit into primary school in my purple velvet flare pants – it ended up eating through the crotch of the pants before escaping into the classroom – or an incident with some op-shop togs down the river. Both were memorable for all the wrong reasons!

Do you have a style rule you always obey?

I don’t have strict rules, but I believe in understanding what suits your body and your colours. I know that bright neon doesn’t suit my skin tone, but sometimes it’s important to just have fun with fashion and break the rules.

If you could raid one person’s wardrobe, who would it be?

Daniel Roseberry’s wardrobe at Schiaparelli. His work is just amazing – creative, bold, and unapologetically unique. It’s the kind of artistry that I truly admire.

Finish this sentence – You would never catch me wearing…

Super high heels. If I’m going out somewhere fancy, like a wedding, I want to be able to dance!

MyGARDEN

Catherine Jeffries’ Red Balloon Gardens is a 1200sqm delight in central Blenheim – a young garden just coming into its own. The garden is a new addition to Garden Marlborough’s Botanical Bounty full day tour this year.

The story behind the name

The name Red Balloon Gardens is inspired by a sculpture I purchased in Wellington in 2013, created by Donna Hanson and the late Colwyn Hanson of Auckland. The artwork, titled Trapped, depicts a red balloon trapped in a tree, it appeals to my sense of fun and whimsy and has a prominent place in my garden design.

My inspiration

Growing up on a farm with an orchard and a productive vegetable garden, I initially loved traditional gardens with roses and buxus hedges. Over time, my style evolved to blend traditional and modern elements. Upon returning to Blenheim seven years ago, Garden Marlborough’s tours and workshops significantly shaped my vision for Red Balloon Gardens. Over the last five years, with help from garden professionals like Sarah Rolston of SJR Garden Solutions and Karen Hall from Islington Gardens, I’ve created a garden that I hope inspires others.

ABOVE: Catherine with her lemon tree, a significant feature of the garden. She estimates that it must be around 100 years old, as her elderly mother, who was born nearby, remembers the tree from her childhood. Aimée Preston

Design and layout

The garden features two main themes. First, it integrates productivity with aesthetic appeal, with productive elements like fruit trees, herbs, and berries “hidden in plain sight” within the flower gardens. In contrast, the vegetable area includes ornamental flowers for aphid control and a clivia bed in a difficult shaded spot. The greenhouse hosts cacti and succulents alongside edible plants.

The second theme draws from art for hard landscaping inspiration, with the paths and lawns design based on Gretchen Albrecht’s geometric painting Pounamu Mirror. Sculptures, corten steel pots, and stencilled gates add both functional and decorative elements, while bright colours in pergolas, arches, and other features enhance the visual appeal.

I follow the landscape design developed by Tusha Midgley, adapting as plants thrive or struggle. For example, I replaced a daffodil lawn with a more manageable and visually appealing crimson clover bed. This change aims to provide a bright, colourful effect visible through my front gate, while being easy to maintain.

Sensory appeal

I really wanted a garden that appealed to all five of my senses; so, I have included brightly coloured flowers and foliage (sight), highly fragrant plants (smell), a water feature burbling alongside active wildlife – the hens and dogs (sound), edible fruits and berries (taste), and trees with textured bark and surfaces (touch).

Favourite plants

My favourite plants have personal stories. The orange clivias, initially from Auckland, survived the Kaikōura earthquake before settling in their current location, where I added red clivias for more colour. A cherished rhubarb plant, gifted by my grandparents, has been with me for 30 years and now enjoys a permanent spot in my garden.

Seasonal highlights

The garden’s seasonal changes are a major source of inspiration. In winter, I appreciate the bare skeletons of pruned fruit trees, the white trunks of Himalayan birches, and the red stems of dogwoods, complemented by the fragrances of winter flowers. In summer, I relax on the patio with friends, enjoying a glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and my own produce amidst the garden in full bloom. Spring and autumn serve as transitional periods, with spring bringing renewed growth and autumn fading the lush summer in vibrant hues.

Up next

Although Red Balloon Gardens is still evolving, I’m pleased with its shape and form. I continue to experiment with planting in tricky areas, such as layering Pratia angulata with tulips and Ammi green mist for year-round interest. I look forward to seeing how these experiments unfold with each season.

1. Trapped, the red balloon garden sculpture that inspired the name of Catherine’s garden. 2 . The modern design of the house extends to the outdoor living spaces and the garden’s aesthetic, emphasising clean lines and vibrant colours. 3. Decorative elements are chosen for their visual impact and practical use, such as a wooden peg-shaped bench. 4. Relaxing on the patio with friends and a glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a favourite summer pastime for Catherine. 5. Hens contribute to one of the five sensory experiences Catherine aimed to achieve in her garden by adding sound. 6. The garden seamlessly blends aesthetics with functionality, featuring productive fruit and vegetable plants cleverly “hidden in plain sight.”

A word of advice

Conduct thorough research online and through garden tours. Find a gardening mentor, whether a local garden centre staff member or a knowledgeable friend. Record everything you plant, including their locations and planting dates, to inform future decisions. Develop an annual calendar for your garden tasks, updating it as you learn. I keep a detailed written record of everything I plant – where, when, and what maintenance each plant requires – which guides me throughout the year. Consider engaging a landscape architect to save money and ensure proper plant placement. Be patient but decisive – if a plant isn’t thriving, replace it and share your excess. Stick to your vision and preferences rather than following trends, creating a garden that brings you joy and reflects your personal style.

Marlborough builders shine at Registered Master Builder House of the Year Awards

Building a successful home that the owners will love to live in is about more than design and the materials that go into it. A quality home has that extra je ne sais quoi – an attention to detail that gives it the x-factor, providing an enduring haven for its occupants for many years to come.

New Zealand’s Registered Master Builder House of the Year Awards is a prestigious national competition held annually, giving Registered Master Builder members around the country the opportunity to showcase some of their best work across a range of categories. These categories include New Homes at various price points, Renovations, Craftsmanship, Builder’s Own Home, Show Homes, and Lifestyle.

The competition begins with regional categories. From there, the top regional Gold Award winners are announced and awarded National Top 100 status. They then progress through to the national awards, where they are rejudged by a new set of judges and compete at the national level. Each property is judged against a scorecard of points for workmanship, design, style, and functionality.

This year, Marlborough was included in the Cook Strait Regional Awards, which encompasses Wellington, Wairarapa, Nelson, and the West Coast. Once again, it highlighted the excellent quality of homes being built in this region, with three entries

from local builders receiving top awards. These include Builder’s Own Home, ‘Black Magic,’ built at Yelverton by Ben Grady and his team from Discovery Homes, who scooped both a Regional Gold Award and a place in the Top 100. Jennian Homes’ Springlands entry ‘All the Right Places,’ won the Volume/Group Housing New Home $500,000 - $750,000 category, as well as receiving a Gold Award. They also went forward to the Top 100. ‘Long Ridge Love,’ built by Peter Ray Homes Blenheim at the foot of the Wither Hills, won a Gold Award in the CARTERS New Home $1 million - $1.5 million category.

Karen Maddocks, Cook Strait’s Regional Branch Manager, was delighted at this year’s entries. “We were very pleased with the high quality of homes presented,” she says. “The standard of the Cook Strait entries is always high. There are some great projects undertaken in this part of the country, and for a small region, Marlborough does extremely well. Fifteen of the entries from the regional contest made it through to the Top 100.”

Now that the Regional Awards across the country have finished, the judging has commenced for the Top 100 homes ahead of the House of the Year National Awards Gala, to be held at Cordis, Auckland on 23 November.

PETER RAY HOMES

Ahome at the base of the Wither Hills is the recipient of a Regional Gold Award for Peter Ray Homes in the Master Builders House of the Year Awards in the CARTERS New Home $1 million$1.5 million section.

It is a home built to appreciate the spectacular views that stretch out below and around, while providing plenty of space for an active family who love entertaining. It has been cleverly designed to also provide privacy and seclusion.

The project was a close collaboration between the clients, architectural designer Jason Anderson, and Peter Ray Homes. The result is a bespoke residence crafted with an exceptional eye for detail that sits sympathetically within its environment while providing the features its new family wished for.

The home’s design is an elegant dance between bold architecture and natural harmony. Its long, low, horizontal footprint, which extends to 456sqm, seamlessly integrates with the undulating landscape. Being on a slope, several metres of earth were removed initially to provide a platform that would allow the house to tuck comfortably into its surroundings. Approaching this residence up the stylishly landscaped drive, the nearly full glass frontage immediately captures attention, honouring the stunning views. The natural colour palette chosen for the exterior, with a mix of vertical cedar cladding and light-coloured Rockcote, adds a contemporary

sophistication. The variable roof pitches add an extra layer of visual interest, breaking up the lines and enhancing the home’s distinctive profile, all of which contributes to the feeling that it is an organic part of the landscape.

The large entrance creates a grand first impression, setting the tone for the rest of the home’s very welcoming interiors.

Used to living overseas with plenty of space, a key requirement by the owners was to have large, spacious rooms to suit all their activities and enable their love of entertaining.

It is a home that can’t help but impress with its substantial, inviting interiors. The four-bedroom, four-plus bathroom layout is meticulously designed to balance scale with comfort and includes a wellused, large separate recreational space to the left of the garage.

Inside the main living area, the advantages of the high, raked ceiling come into play, enhancing the movement of light and shadow, and providing an open, airy atmosphere.

The central kitchen is a particular highlight, featuring a striking charcoal and grey colour scheme that anchors the space while drawing the eye outward. A large island with ample storage and an unobstructed view ensures that cooking remains a pleasure, offering the opportunity to constantly appreciate

the surrounding Marlborough countryside. This kitchen really is the hub of the home, ideally placed with the dining area close by and an unobstructed into the main living area, making for a large central socialising area for the family and their visitors.

The addition of a wood burner in the sitting area adds to the home’s country feel.

A super comfortable media room is well-used and just outside it on the verandah is the spa pool, positioned to appreciate the views at night.

The owner’s love of entertaining is evident throughout the thoughtfully designed outdoor areas. Multiple sheltered spaces provide opportunities for relaxation and socialising, ensuring that the home is as functional as it is beautiful. From alfresco dining to cosy evenings under the stars, these areas extend the living space outdoors and enhance the overall enjoyment of the property.

The bathrooms are finished to a very high standard with smart, contemporary tiling and the inclusion of super comfortable baths in several of them. As with all the other rooms in the home, these too are ample in size while also use materials that make them easycare, perfect for family living.

An extensive paved area to the rear of the build provides even more space for outdoor gatherings and activities.

The Marlborough sun provides the home with plenty of passive heating, which is enhanced on cold days by a premium ducted heat pump system that keeps it at a very comfortable temperature throughout.

The judges were impressed with how this home, despite its size and openness, still feels “cosy and homely”. It is filled with light, and as the sun moves throughout the day, the light dances across the walls, creating constant variations and a welcoming ambience.

Black magic

DISCOVERY HOMES

Discovery Homes has triumphed in the New Zealand Master Builders Regional Awards, winning gold in the Builder’s Own Home category and securing a place in the National Top 100 for the house built by owner Ben Grady for himself, his wife Jo, and their family. The judges described it as “an exemplar of smart-home living,” praising its impressive exterior and interior design.

Although Ben and his team build many new homes, he and Jo have spent three decades renovating villas for themselves. Finding such a fantastic, northfacing section with beautiful, established trees – including among them an oak, rimu, kauri and tōtara – was too tempting to ignore. The couple set out to create a home that could incorporate all the features they loved.

Their sketches and ideas were taken to Bronwyn Duffy of Max Architectural Design, who created the plans. “It was terrific to be able to design a home from scratch,” Jo says. “It was a chance to finally incorporate everything we wanted in a home.”

The result is a striking design consisting of three mono-pitched pods, each with 3.6-metre-high raking ceilings, connected by atriums. One end features a master bedroom, while the central ‘living hub’ includes the kitchen, lounge, and dining areas. The last pod houses three additional bedrooms, a master bathroom, laundry, and a guest room with an ensuite.

Nicknamed ‘Black Magic’ for its ebony corrugated iron roof and aluminium window and door frames, the use of recycled Australian hardwood bridge beams on the exterior provides a rich juxtaposition of textures that complement the panorama of differing green tones in the established garden. “I enjoy using this timber because it is very straight and solid as well as having a warm glow,” says Ben.

The home is a fine example of smart-home living, complete with a PolarEnergi system installed over a RibRaft foundation with 1.5 kilometres of plastic piping that allows heated water to be moved throughout. There are eight thermostats in the house, allowing for room-by-room temperature control.

Solar panels on the roof supply power to the heat pump, which heats the water and keeps the house at a super comfortable 21°C throughout the winter months. The framing is thicker than the norm at 140mm, allowing for better insulation. A doublesided fire that straddles the living and dining rooms provides a cosy ambience.

Great care has gone into the intricate details of the design, and Ben’s love affair with copper is evident in the downlights, tapware, and bottle traps, providing a sympathetic, rustic contrast throughout. Optimal energy efficiency and a comfortable temperature year-round are supported by the installation of double-glazed, argon-filled Low

E glass complete with a high-tech coating. A green-tinted version was chosen to reflect the outdoor greenery. For added convenience, electric blinds were installed throughout the home. The ebony theme continues with aluminium louvres in the hallway that provide air circulation, allowing the house to remain cool during the summer months.

With an inherent love of books, it was important to the family to have a library. This has been achieved by cleverly enclosing a space with two large glass and steel walls, specifically designed so that the interior can be seen from the kitchen and dining areas while also being closed off to offer a quiet space for reading.

A standout feature throughout the living areas is the extra-large 1.2-metre Italian floor tiles. “With such an expansive space and high ceilings, smaller tiles would have looked too busy,” explains Ben. The kitchen, designed by Bays Joinery, features a carbon-

neutral Dekton benchtop, chosen for its resistance to heat, stains, and scratches. The Neff oven was selected for its innovative sliding door design. To maximize space and avoid doors banging in the Marlborough breezes, the internal doors are cavity sliders. “We love them because they free up extra wall space in each room,” says Jo. The master bathroom is divided into wet and dry areas, featuring a Concrete Nation bath and matching handbasin. The clay-coloured basins throughout were selected to complement the copper tapware. In the master ensuite, an infrared sauna provides a personal wellness retreat.

The master bedroom features a wall designed by Emma Hayes that mirrors the local grapevines and the garden’s greenery, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere.

This home not only exhibits exceptional design features but is also very much a comfortable space for everyday family living. Set in such a way as to maximise the beautiful garden setting, it gives the illusion of being miles from anywhere, as if in its own secret world.

All the right places

JENNIAN HOMES MARLBOROUGH

Jennian Homes Marlborough didn’t just win a gold award in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards 2024 for the Cook Strait region in the Volume/Group Housing New Home $500,000 to $750,000 section – they also secured a place in the Top 100.

The winning three-bedroom home in Springlands has been meticulously crafted and is a much-enjoyed family residence, thanks to its excellent design, use of quality materials, and fine workmanship. Light and bright, inside and out, the house was celebrated by the judges for being “neat and tidy, from the black-and-white exterior with perfectly manicured gardens to the floor plan with everything in just the right place.”

The entrance is particularly welcoming, with a large window in addition to the glass-panelled door inviting visitors in. A notable feature is the herringbone-style pattern of ‘grass pavers’ leading up to the entrance, chosen purposefully as a point of difference.

Set on a 710m2 section, the house itself is 226m2, providing ample family space indoors as well as for outdoor living. There is a north-facing alfresco entertaining area and a cleverly designed courtyard outside the master bedroom for relaxation. Both areas feature kwila timber decking, offering a warm contrast to the rich James Hardie ‘All Black’ linear board and fresh, white Rockcote in ‘Black White’. The kitchen, the heart of the home, opens to two living areas. A feature here is the black laminate with timber grain on the cabinetry, a striking finish that is also used throughout the home to bring the exterior colour theme indoors, creating a bright, harmonious,

and contemporary space. The kitchen benchtop is Caesarstone, and the beautifully built pantry features shelving at just the right depth to ensure everything is visible.

Light radiates in from the large picture windows, and a skylight over the kitchen work zone adds even more illumination. The street-side window in the main living area has been set back, providing an architectural feature that breaks up the space. Curtains, which fall from ceiling height, enhance the feeling of luxury and spaciousness.

The master bedroom features a wall-to-wall builtin wardrobe, a much-loved feature that enables everything to be accessed easily in a light-filled space. The owner chose this option over a walk-in wardrobe because the latter has a tendency to be messy, whereas carefully designed shelving and hanging space allows for more order. Set at the end of the hall, this bedroom is a calm, private haven complete with a luxurious ensuite.

The dark finger mosaic tiles used in the ensuite offer a beautiful contrast to the lighter main tiling, reinforcing the modern theme of contrasting light and dark. A stunning ceramic handbasin with brushed nickel tapware completes the picture, while the family bathroom features a smart feature wall lined with Hardie Groove painted in Resene ‘Chicago.’ A ducted heat pump keeps the interior comfortable all year round, while the ensuite has the added luxury of a heated tiled floor.

The bedrooms are all spacious and even allow for workspaces where necessary. A study nook off the hallway is cleverly concealed behind doors, providing plenty of office space while keeping any mess hidden from view when needed.

The judges particularly noted the centrally located laundry just off the garage, which provides plenty of room for “offloading dirty gear.”

The home’s landscaping is designed for easy care, with a mix of lawn, light-coloured gravel pathways, and a simple but effective planting scheme. It is a design that suits all ages and will be easily maintained for years to come.

The success of this home in the House of the Year Awards is attributed to the attention to detail

throughout. Everything, from skirting boards to ceilings, has been completed to a high standard. Even the barbecue area features a built-in workspace that matches beautifully with the rest of the build.

The owner didn’t originally plan for a black-andwhite theme, but the result is more than pleasing, with visitors frequently commenting on its success. This is a family home that well deserves its award and place in New Zealand’s Top 100.

Creating a Focal Point in Your Garden

Inspired by the stunning gardens on show at Garden Marlborough, we noticed many had a focal point that draws the eye and anchors the space. This key design element can turn an ordinary garden into a captivating sanctuary, giving it structure and visual appeal and transform your outdoor space.

To create a compelling focal point in your garden, consider the following strategies:

Select a central feature

A focal point should stand out and serve as the garden’s visual anchor. Options may include sculptures, water features, or ornamental trees. For example, a grand statue or a unique piece of garden art can serve as a dramatic centerpiece, while an ornamental tree can provide both height and a sense of permanence.

Design for depth and flow

Use the focal point to guide the eye through the garden. Arrange paths, borders, and plantings to lead attention towards the focal feature. A garden path that curves or zigzags can direct visitors’ gaze and encourage them to explore. This layout technique not only highlights the focal point but also adds depth and intrigue to the garden.

Play with scale and proportion

Ensure the scale of your focal point is appropriate for the size of your garden. In a smaller space, a compact yet striking feature, such as a beautifully crafted birdbath or a vibrant flower bed, can make a strong impression. In larger gardens, consider larger

features or multiple focal points to create balance and visual interest.

Incorporate colour and texture

Use contrasting colours and textures to make your focal point stand out. A bold flower garden with a mix of vibrant hues can draw attention and add a burst of colour. Alternatively, an ornamental tree with distinctive foliage or bark can provide texture and a focal point that changes with the seasons.

Ensure year-round appeal

Choose focal points that offer visual interest throughout the year. Select plants that bloom in different seasons or opt for sculptures and ornaments that can withstand various weather conditions. This approach ensures your garden remains engaging and visually appealing all year long.

By thoughtfully integrating a focal point into your garden design, you create a dynamic and inviting outdoor space. Take inspiration from the beautiful established gardens in our region and let your creativity flourish.
