Nelson needs to think seriously about whether it can continue

to pay increasing costs for a recycling scheme with no guarantee that it will actually minimise the region’s waste, a veteran councillor says.

recycling type 3-7 plastics. These include biscuit trays, yoghurt containers, takeaway containers and other soft plastics.

Ian told the council meeting last week that at some stage we have to sit down and make a decision about whether we’re going to continue this “uneconomic activity”.

“It’s costing us a lot of money – $2.4 million dollars – to carry this out to just stockpile material that cannot be recycled. We used to make money out of it. We’re not. How long do we carry on losing money? This council needs to make a decision.”

However, some locals are wanting to take matters into their own hands by exploring the possibility of creating their own recycling machine.

Lisa Allan, who organised the group, says it came out of a conversation where everyone was very “doom and gloom” about the state of recycling.

“I just felt really inspired that it’s up to us to take responsibility for our own rubbish.”

The latest regional waste assessment showed that each year about 62,000 tonnes of waste is sent to landfill in the Nelson Tasman region.

While the amount going to landfill

has decreased very slightly, in that same time recycling has increased – meaning we are throwing away just as much.

Lisa found a website, Previously Plastic, that has free models and designs to build a recycling machine that grinds down plastic into particles that can then be melted down and used in moulds for other products.

She started looking around for potential grants available through council to develop the idea but did not get far. However, Lisa is not deterred and instead is looking for likeminded people who might share her vision.

“What’s happening with our recycling it’s not necessarily a problem, it’s an opportunity.

“Why can’t Nelson lead the way – why can’t we do something different and show people what can be done?”

Hospice opens its doors Jonty Dine

The finishing touches are being put on what is being hailed as the best hospice in the country.

The Nelson Tasman Hospice officially opens its doors tomorrow following an unprecedented community fundraising effort.

CEO Frans Dellebeke says the facility reflects the importance the hospice holds within the Nelson community.

A number of initiatives, including Dancing with the Stars and Steampunk Fantasy fundraisers, contributed to the completion of the multimilliondollar project.

“That is a reflection of the service we provide and the staff we have got.”

Frans says the hospice will be among the best facilities in New Zealand.

Gibbons Holdings Construction chief operating officer Shane Trench says, despite small delays due to the drought, the construction process has been a smooth one.

“Our guys have been working 60-hour weeks in the last month, so we’ll be looking forward to giving them a break.”

Shane says there is a strong sense of community connection among workers.

“They have really taken the community element to heart which is why they don’t mind going the extra mile, it will be near and dear to all of us at some point.”

The soil was broken in February 2018 with an original budget of around $13 million and managed to come in under this with the facility costing $11.5million.

A dawn ceremony will take place tomorrow morning followed by a blessing of the building.

“The speed to get this up and running has been amazing, everyone has done a magnificent job,” says Frans.

He says there are literally thousands of individuals who have helped contribute to the facility.

“It has been an absolute pleasure and now the staff can’t wait to get in.”

Patients will move into the tenbed facility from April 11.

New inner-city development ‘not a mall’ NEWS Charles Anderson Editor

The developer behind a proposed urban precinct in central Nelson says that it will not be a mall in the traditional sense.

Nelson City Council is currently consulting on the possibility of selling approximately 2,425sqm of Wakatu Square car park to developer Cephas to allow the new inner-city development to go ahead.

“We are not proposing a large out-of-town suburban shopping centre, which is often what people see in their minds when they hear the word mall”, says Cephas managing director Steve Baigent.

“This is not a mall – it would not suit Nelson, and it wouldn’t suit this site.”

He says the precinct would have one third of the retail space of Richmond Mall, with smaller shops starting at 10 sqm providing affordable opportunities for small independent retailers. It will also include office space and dining options.

“Retail is changing, with a stronger focus on customer experience. Our focus is to create a space that customers enjoy and want to visit, that will intensify the retail landscape and bring life to the heart of the city and re-energise it.”

“The laneways will be relatively narrow, to provide an intimacy appropriate to the city –the scale is more akin to Nelson Central walkway off Trafalgar Street.”

Around half of the space for the new urban infill precinct would come from existing retail and office space fronting Bridge Street and Trafalgar Street, already owned by Cephas.

There would be multiple entrances connecting the precinct to the CBD, including open-aired and roofed laneways. These entrances will spill people out onto Bridge and Trafalgar

Streets, stimulating and intensifying activity for surrounding properties and businesses.

Steve says the proposal would allow Cephas to repurpose or replace existing retail floor space to ensure it trades more effectively.

“The central city needs to move beyond outdated strip retail, and a whole lot of underutilised space that doesn’t serve the customer.”

Nelson City Council have indicated at a minimum, car park numbers would not be reduced. Cephas Property would support more parking in the vicinity including multi-level car parking options.

Cephas Property has already had strong interest’ from Farmers

to be a potential anchor tenant.

The move would allow Farmers to unify into one store, rather than the two it currently operates from, and provide a better offer and service to Nelson shoppers.

Steve says the edges of the precinct will either be attractive streetscapes with active retail frontages, or glass looking into the common area. Other edges will integrate seamlessly with existing buildings.

“We also hope that our investment will encourage other landlords to invest, lifting Nelson’s game as a whole.”

Alleged arsonist named: The man allegedly responsible for the Moutere and Dovedale fires has lost his bid for name suppression. Benjamin Phillip Durrant is alleged to have intentionally set fire to scrub near the Moutere Highway on February 27 and in Dovedale on March 6. The 34-year-old is facing two charges of arson and lost his appeal for name suppression last week. Defence lawyer Tagan Lyall cited a Facebook post, in which threats were made towards the suspect, in a bid to keep his name from the public. However, his appeal was denied with Judge David Ruth stating during Durrant’s initial court appearance last month that it was no surprise people were angry and deemed the threats not to be genuine.

Durrant is being remanded in custody until April 3.

Motorcyclist dies: A motorcyclist has died after a serious crash in Brightwater on Sunday.

The road was closed at the intersection of Teapot Valley and Waimea West Rd in Brightwater after a single vehicle collision. A police spokesperson says they were called to the scene around 3.20pm and say the person died at the scene. The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and are at the scene assisting with a scene examination.

New leader for Victory centre Locally Owned and Operated

The heart of the victory community has a new fearless leader who is determined to honour its mission statement - ‘this is a place that belongs to all’.

Rebecca Greig has been appointed as the new manager of the Victory Community Centre.

After the departure of longstanding staff members, Kindra Douglas and Penny Molnar, Rebecca is now leading the centre into a new era.

But it wasn’t a job that was on her radar.

After resigning from her job as mental health manager for Nelson Bays Primary Health to spend more time with her two children, Rebecca got an unexpected call.

“In February 2018, I was asked to manage the Victory Community Centre for 8 - 10 weeks, because the person they had appointed to take over from Kindra fell through last minute.”

Rebecca agreed to help temporarily, but that changed when the centre lost more staff over the year.

“The board were doing wonderful work trying to get a new manager, but there was no one there and change just kept happening.

I got to a point where I realised I was actually part of the change and needed to stay and keep leading the ship.”

She signed the permanent agreement at the beginning of this year and hasn’t looked back.

“This is my passion. It’s the collision of primary care, secondary care and community work - all in one place. From talking to the general managers at the DHB to serving cups of tea,” she says.

“Victory is an amazing place. There’s a real feeling of warmth and community here. The lovely rainbow of colours in the school yard.

The different languages. I love it.”

Rebecca is a trained social worker, specialising in mental health and addiction. She has also worked as a youth alcohol and drug clinician.

Born in Kenya, she spent her childhood in Seddon, Picton and Nelson. She then

settled in Christchurch for 17 years before returning to Nelson.

Rebecca says the centre has welcomed many new staff over the past year, as well as a community navigator for refugees and migrants and a primary care adult drug and alcohol clinician.

“The staff here are stunning.

We’re all settling into our places and gathering that relationship with the community again.”

She says she won’t be making many changes to centre, with all the same services and programmes continuing, such as Victory on the Move, counselling, playgroup and food parcels.

“I want to applaud the work that Kindra and Penny did, as well as the board and Helen Watson. To be able to go to her is an absolute privilege.”

Rebecca says she is looking forward to meeting new faces in the community.

“One of the things I say to the staff is that I expect everyone to be greeted as they walk through the door with a smile and a cup of tea and an offer of ‘how can we help?’ - this place is theirs.”

NEWS Food challenge at market: Nelson Farmers Market manager Miriam Clark has set herself the challenge of eating solely from market food for the week of 10-17 April. The move is part of national Farmers Market Week. “I really want to demonstrate how easy it is to produce tasty and nourishing meals using food solely from our stallholders,” she says.

Miriam also wants other people to give it a go. The market is running a recipe competition and there will be market vouchers awarded to the tastiest breakfast, lunch or dinner recipe. If this recommendation is approved at the next full council meeting on 2 May, the lowered speed limit will come into effect four weeks after that date. Following public consultation, the committee considered the 89 submissions received and heard from eight submitters in person at a hearing on 6 March. 66 per cent of the submissions supported reducing speed limit.

Community housing proposal: Nelson City Council are seeking the community’s views on a proposal to divest some or all of its community housing portfolio to an experienced provider. The aim of the proposal is to bring the existing community housing units up to quality standards and to grow the portfolio. With rising house prices putting pressure on the community and a demand for subsidised housing, council is looking for ways it can make a difference. Council have emphasised that the welfare of existing tenants is a priority and they are keen to hear their views. Consultation runs from 29 March - 2 May. Girls send paper cranes of peace to Christchurch Charles Anderson When the news came through about the tragedy in Christchurch two weeks ago, Nelson College for Girls teacher Mika Sandford had an idea.

The Japan Society of New Zealand wanted to organise something to show how much the pain in Christchurch was being felt around

the country. Mika thought that her students could help with that.

In Japanese culture, the origami crane has come to symbolise peace and hope in distressing times.

“If someone is going through difficult times or challenging times in sickness or if someone dies, to show support they are gifted 1000 paper cranes.”

So, for the past week, students at

the college have been spending their time carefully making the cranes to be threaded onto a piece of string.

“The hope is that they will find their way to the mosque,” says Mika.

She says that it might only be a small gesture, but it is something to channel the sadness that is being experienced throughout the Nelson College for Girls community.

An historic collaboration between one of the country’s largest fishing companies and 36 iwi has been reached.

The agreement will see Sealord, which is 50 per cent owned by Māori, work alongside iwi to create growth and value for the business, a fundamental focus of the Māori fisheries settlement.

The agreement, entitled Nga Tapuwae o Maui, gives Sealord access to annual catch entitlement of 36 iwi groups.

Sealord says it will increase efficiencies and see more than 80 per cent of profits returned to iwi.

The long-term arrangement will also provide stability for Sealord operations, having invested heavily in new fishing technologies and modernisation of its fleet.

The agreement means about 60

per cent of the iwi quota held in deep-water fisheries will be caught on Sealord’s vessels.

It will also provide iwi members opportunities for employment and advance iwi knowledge of aspects of the fisheries value chain with Sealord.

Ngati Porou Seafoods Group CEO Mark Ngata says the signing of the agreement is a watershed moment in the history of Māori fisheries.

“This unique partnership very much aligns with the intent of the Māori fisheries settlement, which envisaged Māori working collectively together, large and small, for the benefit of all. This is what our tipuna fought so hard for.”

Mark says the journey towards reaching this signing is the culmination of like-minded people within Māori fisheries, including Sealord, working towards a common goal.

Sealord board chair Whaimutu Dewes says, while Sealord signed a similar agreement with some separate iwi collectives in 2014, this deal is different.

“This is not just about increasing returns – it is a business decision that is founded on tikanga Māori where all parties are taking learnings from earlier arrangements to better manage our fisheries assets. Together, we want to lift our sights higher to ensure fisheries continue to be managed sustainably, using best practice, with improved performance.”

Te Kupenga spokesperson Tony Magner says the agreement for Te Kupenga and Maniapoto iwi shares a common recognition that quota is taonga that must be protected for future generations.

“And that this can be achieved whilst maximising the income from this valuable asset.”

Load control is a mechanism that Network Tasman and many other lines companies use to manage the demand that heating water places on the electricity network during ‘peak’ demand periods, typically in the morning and early evening on the coldest winter days.

Load control allows Network Tasman to shut off devices such as electrical hot water cylinders for a short time, using a ripple control system, then switch them back on during low-demand ‘off-peak’ periods. As a result Network Tasman can keep costs down and pass those savings on to our consumers. Cheaper prices for water heating are shown on your electricity bill as a line called ‘controlled’ or ‘economy’.

Controlling the load in this way doesn’t impact on the way you use your hot water e.g. to wash your dishes, do laundry or have showers and baths. Our aim is to ensure that you don’t even notice that load control is being used.

Load control helps save consumers money because it reduces the transmission charges that Network Tasman pays to Transpower. Network Tasman also doesn’t have to invest so much money upgrading the capacity of its local network to cope with ever-increasing peaks during network busy hours.

“As an example,” says Network Tasman’s Regulatory and Commercial Manager, Daniel Vincent, “in the next four years we will need to build a new grid exit point in Brightwater. If we didn’t have load control, we would have needed to make this $28 million investment approximately six years earlier and customers would already be paying for that investment in their power bill.

“Deferring investment keeps our network at a level that’s in line with what the community actually needs and, in turn, keeps electricity prices down. It also means we can take advantage of developing technology and innovation as alternatives to traditional network supply become available.

Success for Nelson Highland Pipe Band Kate Russell The City of Nelson Highland Pipe Band is celebrating after earning a placing at the NZ Pipe Band National Championships in Dunedin over the weekend.

The band, comprising of 13 playing members, competed in a range of different events and came first in Dress for their grade. They were up against 11 other bands in the category.

Pipe Major Jeremy Burton says the award comes at the end of a very busy competition season for the band.

“It was a bit of a surprise for us. There’s a lot of build up to this competition, so it’s a big deal for us.”

In the Dress category, points are awarded for the correct wearing of uniform, with musical and drill aspects.

Bands from all over the country, and even some from Australia, congregated for the annual competition.

Founded in 1924, The City of Nelson Highland Pipe Band has members ranging in age from 16 years old, right through to 83.

Boathouse to be ‘better than ever’ Ashleigh Monk Hope are high for the future of the Nelson Boathouse as renovations to the heritage building inch closer to completion.

The Wakefield Quay venue was severely damaged by Cyclone Fehi last year, but Nelson Boathouse manager Amie-Jo Trayes says she hopes the final touches will be finished in time for summer.

“We hope by summer that everything will be as good as, and better than it ever was.

“I personally think that there are some things we did that made it more of a heritage building. There was the gift of time to stop and think: do these lights fit the look? Does this colour fit the look?”

Cyclone Fehi hit the region on February 1, 2018, causing Amie and Nelson Boathouse Community Trust director Alec Woods to flee the building as it was torn apart.

“It was pretty heart-breaking, it was also fairly scary to be quite honest. I’d never seen a storm surge in action, it broke all the rules,” Alec says.

The Boathouse opened its doors to the public in October after repair work was undertaken.

The road to recovery had not been easy, but Nelson Boathouse chair Annie Henry says the cyclone damage sparked the chance for a much-needed upgrade.

“The first thing I did after becoming the chair was to have a strategic planning session. We talked about the history, the impact it has on the community and where we wanted to see it go. We knew that with a 112-year old building there was going to be a point in time where things had to be changed. So, mother nature just helped move that decision much closer.”

“We see the place still has the charm that it has had all these

years, but with the upgrade that was so desperately needed.”

She says the Boathouse was at the “heart” of the community, and many would be pleased to see the renovations completed.

“For me, and I think for a lot of people, Nelson is a heart place, and the heart beats when there is a lot of activity and fun things going on, and I think that the Boathouse is part of that. It definitely is a heart place for me.”

Locked in line-up for fire concert Staff Reporter The line-up for the forest fire concert on April 13 has been confirmed.

Headline act The Warratahs will be supported by the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band, local duos Dust and Gold, and BoKay, and covers band 995.

It promises to be a great afternoon of entertainment at the A & P Showgrounds in Richmond, beginning at 1pm and going through until about 6pm.

Responders and volunteers get in free with their immediate family, which includes children and partners only.

There is a small general public charge of $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 15. In the interests of keeping things simple it’s a gate charge and cash only. Families are welcome to bring a chilly bin and seats.

Organisers have asked everyone involved to spread the word and make sure as many people as possible turn up. There is free

Young Nelson artist ‘an inspiration’

sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz A budding Nelson artist has managed to raise $2200 by selling copies of his artwork depicting the heroic efforts of helicopters fighting the Tasman Fires.

Broadgreen Intermediate pupil Leon Fenemor, 11, saw the impact that the largest wildfire in more than 60 years was having on the entire region. Then, after visiting the Nelson Suburbs Football Club to donate food for the firefighters he

was inspired to paint the picture when he got home.

After a photo of his painting went viral, Leon and his parents Daryl and Cheree decided to make copies of the painting and sell them through a Facebook page to raise money for local charities.

Users of the page decided where the funds would go, and with Speedy Print making 100 copies free of charge, Daryl says they were “delighted” to be able to donate the proceeds to their chosen organisations last week.

“Leon delivered a $1200 cheque to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter

Trust and $1000 was spread around the region’s fire stations in the form of supermarket vouchers.”

Daryl says the prints are mainly in homes around the Nelson Tasman region, but one went as far as England and others were sent around the country.

One special copy has gone to Alan Beck who is the pilot of the helicopter depicted in the painting, he plans to blow the print up and have it in prime place in his hangar as well as a copy at home.

“It’s absolutely fabulous that he took that on off his own bat without any sort of parental guidance,” says Alan.

Put a sign out on the main intersection near the beach carpark. It's hard to know it's even there. And perhaps change the name and incorporate "Zoo" in there, so people know what it is. Nelson Matters Three years ago Nelson got in behind the “Buy a Beach” campaign that enabled the sand spit at Awaroa to be added to the Abel Tasman National Park.

This week a new Trust has been formed for a similar but smaller project to expand and protect Snowden’s Bush in Brightwater.

This spectacular scenic reserve is the last remnant of a vast forest that once covered the Waimea Plains. All except the few hectares at Snowden’s Bush of this ancient forest has been lost to fires during Maori times and the mass clearance for farming and housing during the 19th century European settlement. The five hectares of ancient totara, matai

and titoki trees, mistletoe and native birds was purchased by the Waimea County Council in 1920 from Tom Snowden.

The problem for Brightwater and the wider Tasman and Nelson community is that the 200 metre frontage along Waimea West Road is privately owned by the Anglican Church. This area was acquired for St Pauls in the 1850s as a ‘glebe’ meaning land to support the grazing of a horse and to grow food for the Church Minister. It has been used for decades as part of the scenic reserve. The Park Management Plan states that if the Church ever offered it for sale it should be purchased and added to the

reserve.

I cannot criticize the Anglican Church for wanting to sell this land. They are about Christian Ministry rather than providing public parks. They have generously agreed to gift 71% of the area they own to the reserve and are quite entitled to sell the remaining 3500m² for housing.

My involvement in this project began last year when impassioned Brightwater residents led

by Janice Gibbs asked for my help in protecting the reserve’s frontage. Their concern was the loss of beautiful totara and titoki trees, public space and blocking the vista of the main reserve with housing. The Church has

Ghost makes NZ stage debut in Nelson Kate Russell

The musical version of the hit 90s film that featured Patrick Swayze

and Demi Moore is making its New Zealand debut in Nelson next week.

Ghost the Musical is being performed by the Nelson Youth

Theatre Company from 8 - 13 April at the Theatre Royal.

Director Richard Carruthers says it’s the company’s 200th production, and Ghost seemed to be a fitting choice to mark the milestone.

“We were looking for a suitable challenge for our 200th show and Ghost became available.

Everyone knows and loves the movie.”

The supernatural thriller is about Sam and Molly, a young couple whose connection takes a shocking turn after Sam’s untimely death.

Trapped between two worlds, Sam refuses to leave Molly when he learns she is in danger.

Desperate to communicate with her, he turns to a storefront psychic who helps him protect Molly and avenge his death.

It features well-known songs, such as With You and the Righteous Brothers’ classic Unchained Melody.

Richard says the production has been “quite challenging” musically and from a staging point of view.

“It’s very beautifully done.

There are lots of special effects. Anyone who loves the movie will love the production.”

Shakespeare, meet Kids show for Rocky Balboa holidays Charles Anderson

When Rik Brown first watched the seminal 1980s classic movie Rocky 3, he was hyper aware of the Shakespearean tragedy already dripping out of the screen.

But he knew he had to take it one step further. So the veteran Melbourne actor and improviser, whose work taken him across the world and Australian screens, decided to imagine Rocky Balboa as if he actually channelled Shakespeare.

Rocky the Third is a Shakespearean reimagining of Rocky 3 where two actors attempt to bring to life all the characters and transform one of cinemas most inarticulate figures into one of Shakespeare’s most verbose heroes in this heavyweight epic.

“Whether you love him, hate him, or have no feelings at all for the Italian Stallion, this show will take you on a Shakespearean rollercoaster that will delight and amaze

This show is the brain child of Rik, long time workhorse of the Melbourne Improv scene and performer of many a festival show, and features Bridget Metherall in a powerhouse performance of comedic brilliance.

Bridget Metherall has been performing steadily since 1996 and has graced numerous festivals in Australia and New Zealand. Rik, who has been called a “true craftsman”, has been an actor and improvisor for the past 20 odd years. He was last in Nelson two years ago when he won the best improv show at the Nelson Fringe Festival.

With a voice described as “honey mixed through smoked chili”, Renee is known for unapologetic lyrics set to exquisite melodies, delivered in a smoky soul-folk style.

Students get their Shakespeare on Kate Russell

Nelson and Tasman secondary school drama students will congregate this weekend to give new life to William Shakespeare’s greatest works.

The regional Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival is on at Waimea College this Saturday.

The festival is now in its 28th year and gives local students the chance to direct and perform either a five or fifteen-minute piece.

The two best performances will go on to the national festival, and from there students are in the running to go to the Globe

Theatre in London.

One group from Nelson College will be taking on Shakespearean tragedy Coriolanus, which is based on the life of the legendary Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus.

Student director Daniel Love says they wanted a play with plenty of dialogue, and one where they could act out a fight scene.

“We’ve taken a scene from the play, which is quite a traditional one, and put a new twist on it.”

Another group from the college will be acting out a scene from Othello.

Nelson College rowers win big at nationals

Nelson College rowers enjoyed a successful stint on the water during tournament week, bringing home two golds, a silver and a bronze medal at the prestigious Maadi Cup. The U16 boy’s quad with Sam Lenton, Ollie Ransom, Matt Baker, Tom Murray and Flynn Hennessy won gold, with Sam and Ollie backing up the victory with gold in the U16 double.

The U18 novice quad sculled to

a brilliant silver with Rico Fraser, Matt Baker, Flynn Mercer, Bryce Stace and Flynn Hennessy.

Rico and Matt also took home a bronze in the U18 novice double.

The Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge is held each year and brings together over 2000 athletes from 131 school teams from around the country to compete for six days in the top event of its kind in New Zealand.

Stoke completes clean sweep Peter Jones

Stoke Nayland has completed consecutive clean sweeps of the Nelson cricket competitions.

The side went back-to-back, winning the Tasman Premier League for the second year running in a low-scoring final at Horton Park on Saturday, beating top qualifiers Marlborough Labour Hire Dolphins by 33 runs.

The win sees Stoke lock away the Nelson and Tasman 50-over title, as-well as the 110 and 20over championships, for the winter.

At the halfway point of the final, Stoke’s prospects had waned, being bowled out for 146 in 49.4 overs, after being asked to bat first.

Their innings was held together by a superb knock from Ricky Edwards who played the anchor role to perfection, amassing an

unbeaten 73 from 147 balls.

He was quite content to push the ball into gaps rather than trying to find the fence, despite the run rate staying well below three all the way.

The fact his side’s next highest score came from Ben Homan, with 17, illustrated the impact Edwards had on the Stoke scorecard.

The visitors were in early trouble, reeling at 22-4 after Ben Blackman nabbed four scalps in a superb opening spell.

However, the Edwards/Homan partnership pushed the score to 73 before Homan went, with regular wickets falling thereafter.

With just 146 to defend, the visitors felt they needed early wickets, but they weren’t forthcoming.

Openers Blackman and Luke Frankland took the score to 37 before Blackman was run out.

The Dolphins looked relatively comfortable at 93-5, before a Paddy Howes’ peach of a delivery triggered a collapse.

The host’s innings disintegrated against a buoyant Stoke attack, just 20 more runs being added before the final wicket fell in the 38th over.

Howes was the chief destroyer with 3-22 off his full complement, while Darius Skeaping (2-16) and Sam Chamberlain (2-25) helped seal the result.

Meet Suburbs’ teen defender Locally Owned and Operated

Spending his formative years in one of the most isolated parts of the country, Billy Check had limited access to football resources.

Growing up on Stewart Island meant no regular trainings for the young footballer and an oftentreacherous ferry ride across the Foveaux Strait every weekend for games.

But that hasn’t stopped the young defender making a name for himself in the game, having made his Mainland Premier League debut last month, at just 15-year-old.

Billy started for Suburbs during its season opener against Western United.

The side drew 0-0 but Billy says it was a great result to help keep a clean sheet in his first league outing.

“It was definitely a step up in terms of the physicality and the speed of the game, but I thought I had some good touches.”

He says he did feel some pressure with it being his debut and the first game of the season, but the young Nelson College student looked right at home on the pitch.

“It was definitely a very tough physical battle against a strong opposition.”

While it was his toughest match to date, Billy had previously played against men’s sides.

“I did play in the Top of the South division one league last year which has prepared me for this season. In the MPL league, however, there’s

a massive step up in terms of how much fitter and faster the players are. Combined with a high level of technical skill it makes for some tough opposition.”

He says he will need to be confident and move the ball quickly but also be prepared to get physical and win the ball back.

“The coaches and players have been very supportive of me in this space.”

Billy says he has been lucky enough to benefit from some outstanding tutelage including from the Paul Ifill Academy, Tasman United Academy and Davor Tavich at Nelson College.

He has been a key member of the Nelson representative team over the last couple of years, has represented Mainland at the national age group tournament and took part in the U15 NZSS tour of Malaysia where he was named tournament MVP. Billy hopes to continue his ascension through the ranks to the national side.

“My ultimate goal is to be a professional footballer, I know this is going to be a tough road but there are a few different pathways that I’m currently looking at.”

He says, for now, he will focus on the year ahead with the Mainland team and ensure he learns as much as possible.

“There might be opportunities to represent New Zealand again in the future, which I’m working hard towards.”

Katherine Butt fell in love with shooting from the very first time she pulled the trigger.

After insisting her dad take her to the local range, some older college boys handed her a rifle with a healthy dose of condescension.

Their smirks soon turned to astonishment, however, as 13year old Katherine hit a number of bullseyes - scoring 72 out of a possible 110.

As she left the range, Katherine excitedly asked her father if they could come back the next night, only to learn it was closed until next week.

“It was a long wait.”

Just four years later, Katherine has been selected in the New Zealand junior development squad.

The Nelson College for Girls student and .22 target rifle are now a constant fixture at the Richmond Range.

Katherine generally competes in a 10-shot bout with a bullseye worth 10.1 points, her personal best being 108.

The world of competitive shooting can be tense experience, but Katherine keeps herself calm by listening to a song that’s stuck in her head or thinking about what school projects are due.

Despite the South Island side going down, Katherine’s abilities were recognised and she was asked to join the New Zealand juniors.

The 17-year-old says she carries the lessons learnt from the likes of local shooting stalwart Graeme Vallance.

Katherine will tell herself: “Don’t let the emotions get the better of you, one shot doesn’t make it or break it.”

Katherine says her parents are incredibly supportive of her passion and have become accustomed to having her arsenal in the home.

“I don’t sleep with them under my pillow,” she jokes.

Her routine: taking three slow, deep breaths, before firing.

“I just try not to overthink it.”

Katherine’s shooting career began after a serious knee injury forced her to stop playing football.

Needing a hobby to fuel her competitive fire, she says she decided she would put her efforts into shooting and hasn’t looked back.

She recently shot in the annual Andrew Faulkner Shield, the most prestigious trophy of the season for South Island smallbore shooters, as well as the annual North vs South Island grudge match.

Harriers: The Waimea Harrier 5km Eddyline races wrapped up on Wednesday with 78 athletes taking part and the two fastest times for the series being recorded. Matt Ogden, the undisputed winner, completed the course in a time of 16.28mins and Theo Wordsworth, 17.18. Saturday saw around 70 runners and walkers make their way towards Spooners Tunnel on the inaugural running of a challenging Belgrove to Kohatu Race. Braden Lawson was the first runner home in 1.01.46, followed by Brian Kemp, 1.03.28, putting in a good training run for his London Marathon.

Klaartje van Schie ran well to lead the women’s field home in 1.07.08hrs with Colette Read, 2.11.12 in second place. Gillian MacDougal was the first walker home in 2.08.12.

Dominik Berghamer Finally some rain! The much needed precipitation has washed lots of logs and other debris into the bay, watch out when you are heading out. The murky water usually puts fish off the bite but it will clear up within days.

The snapper fishing is patchy but we had more than half a dozen reports of really big fish over 20lbs being caught over the last two weeks. Most of them were caught straylining large baits like whole pilchards or whole squid. Light gear seems to work better on these shy, old fish and patience is essential. A good berley trail and constant cubing (throw small chunks of bait over board) will increase your chances significantly.

The numbers of legal-sized kingfish are still exceptional

and they are everywhere, at the moment it seems to be easier to catch a legal kingie than a decent kahawai. The only kahawai in the bay seem to be juvenile fish of about half a pound, not ideal for the smoker but excellent live baits. Catch them with Sabiki rigs and try them under a balloon, on a bottom rig or slow trolling. Trolling Rapalas and skirted lures for kingies works well and some specialists catch them in the shallows on soft baits - as a bycatch while casting for snapper.

The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club committee members are already preparing the upcoming events, next in line will be a club weekend in Okiwi Bay in early April which usually provides great entertainment and excellent fishing.

Staged at Saxton Fields over three days, hundreds of young athletes from schools from across the South Island descended on Nelson for the event. Though the medal haul was dominated by the likes of Christchurch and Otago, the hosts didn’t walk away empty handed.

Nelson College’s Joseph Ford won the U19 discus throw, Waimea’s Adam Stack the U16 long and high jump and Jacob Neal the U15 800m. In the female division, Lucy Martin from NCG took out the U15 1500m, Shannan Delany from Waimea College won the U14 long jump.

“I was proud of the way I pushed forward, I was very shocked that I won, I didn’t realise I had done so well.”

Ashley has also enjoyed success in another sport, trading the dancefloor for the canvas a little over a year ago.

She owns the Born and Raised dance academy in Stoke and has enjoyed a prosperous hip-hop career but, like Blake, has shifted her focus to boxing.

Both Blake and Ashley benefitted from some top training including a session with Shane ‘The Mountain Warrior’ Cameron.

She says the former New Zealand heavyweight champ put strong emphasis on doing the basics well.

“He also taught me about being aggressive, I really enjoyed the intensity, it helped me a lot.”

Paul also received texts of congratulations from former Warrior and NZ Cruiser weight champ Monty Betham as well as the country’s most well-known boxer, Joseph Parker.

Both fighters will now turn their attention to June’s Golden Gloves in Christchurch with the dream of becoming the country’s best fighters in their respective weight classes.

It may have gone by in a blur but Nelson boxers Ashley Belk and Blake Upton both had very memorable debuts inside the ring last month.

Fighting out of Victory Boxing, the pair both claimed titles in their first competitive bouts.

The South Island Novice Championships saw 58 bouts take place over the two-day competition in Christchurch.

Ashley won the 51kg debut elite title with Blake claiming the 81kg debut male category.

Both boxers say they were a barrel of nerves before stepping between the ropes.

“I knew I’d be nervous, but that was a whole other level,” Ashley says.

“I was just thinking, ‘What am I doing right now?’” Blake jokes.
