Increasing bus fares

‘worry’ parents

Parents who are already living week-to-week are coming under additional financial pressure after the removal of a Government subsidy for children on public transport and the upcoming increase for the eBus service. Half-price fares for under-25s and free fares for under-13s ended on 1 May.

Children aged 5-12 now pay half-price, and people aged 18-24 now pay full price on Nelson Tasman’s eBus service. Children aged 13-18 saw no change and continue to pay half-price. However, the Nelson and Tasman councils agreed last week to increase the cost of bus fares paid by Bee Card by 5 per cent from 1 July.

More than 300 people unleashed their inner warrior at Nelson Obstacle Park over the weekend.

David Trotter first completed the obstacle race in 2016, after campaigning to raise funds

for a purpose built, all-terrain, manual wheelchair, (the Trekenetic K-2), which is now available for others to book for the events.

Aided by his team, he again took part in Aotearoa’s largest obstacle course race, the second time the annual event

was hosted at the Moutere Highway venue.

Since David’s motorcycle accident more than 30 years ago, his whole life has been about overcoming obstacles –exactly what Wairua Warrior is about.

Organiser Julia Kelly says the

event was “fantastic” with around 200 spectators and Nelson Tasman making up half of the competitors.

“It’s a lot of work and yes, I haven’t slept for quite a while, but it was worth all the work,

cent Bee Card fare increase.

“Normally changes like that don’t really bother me, but at a time where everything like inflation has just been out the gate… your mortgage rates are going up and everything, people are really struggling,” she says. “It’s just another thing to worry about.”

Her kids’ school trips have already gone from costing $10 a week to $30 with the removal of the subsidy, though often she ends up having to pay extra because the kids sometimes forget to tag-off the bus with their Bee Cards.

Kaz is living week-to-week because of the high cost of living and the increased bus fares aren’t helping.

“Say the kids needed bus money on their card, the first thing that’s

going to come out of is your food budget because it’s the only one that’s movable,” she says.

“We put the kids first, so it does mean we have the light lunch, or it’s, noodles for dinner or toasted sandwiches, lack of vegetables.”

Nicki Hobden is also now having to pay $10 for her son’s trip from Stoke into Nelson for school.

“With the cost of living and stuff, it’s just an extra cost that we don’t really need,” she says.

Her husband has taken up a second job to help cover her 11-yearold son’s tuition fees, and so she was “not really happy” to learn about the 5 per cent increase to Bee Card fares.

“We’ve cut everything back as much as we can. With rates going up and stuff, I don’t know that the council needs to do that.”

Prior to May, the eBus service had only operated with the Gov-

ernment subsidy in place.

The eBus has seen large patronage growth since its launch in August last year, in recent months

often reaching twice the number of passengers when compared with the former NBus service it replaced, with March seeing a re-

cord 91,687 journeys.

About 10 per cent of eBus passengers were able to take advantage of the Government subsidy and ride the eBus for free.

The council is anticipating a “slight decrease” in patronage with the removal of the subsidy.

“Using the eBus is still a more convenient and cost-effective option for many students than a parent doing the school trip by car or using a Ministry of Education bus,” says Nelson City Council’s acting group manager infrastructure David Light. The increase to Bee Card fares comes as the councils have opted to make small increases over several years to ensure the eBus service remains sustainable.

Tackling social housing needs

Finding suitable sites for social housing in the Nelson-Tasman region will continue to be the stumbling block for community housing providers, despite the Government’s plan to get them building more.

Nelson Tasman Housing Trust director, Carrie Mozena, says it needs to find and successfully purchase land for its housing developments and those sites are hard to find in the region.

The Government announced last week that it wanted community housing providers to carry out more of the social housing developments. It followed an independent review of Kāinga Ora that found the Crown entity was underperforming and not financially viable.

“I think it is important and good that the Government is scrutinising the financial performance of Kāinga Ora because a huge, mind-boggling amount of taxpayer money has been going into Kāinga Ora and not as much as anyone expected has been delivered on the ground.

“There’s so many people in the community who need secure, warm, healthy homes and it bothers me that there is so much money that has gone into Kāinga Ora and they haven’t been able to deliver.”

She concedes Kāinga Ora has had to build a pipeline in the past few years that includes ramping up staff numbers, identifying sites, planning and then building the homes, which takes time. It also deals with people who have very complex needs. But she says it has been moving slowly when the need for social housing is increasing. In the trust’s latest housing need survey, which monitors the housing need beyond the Ministry of Social Development housing register, there are 686 households in Nelson-Tasman needing affordable housing. The figure is calculated by adding up waitlists for Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, Tasman District Council

housing, Habitat for Humanity, Abbeyfield, Franklyn Village, campgrounds and refugee families via Red Cross. That figure is in addition to the 471 households on the public housing register.

Carrie says the community housing providers, including Habitat for Humanity and Abbeyfield, already collaborate and cooperate with each other where possible and last year Te Āwhina Marae in Motueka contracted the trust for its tenancy management. She says more cooperation is needed with Kāinga Ora as well.

“I would certainly like to see much more cooperation between community housing providers and

Kāinga Ora because up to this point it has felt like we’ve been in competition.”

In the recent past, the trust and Kāinga Ora have competed against each other to buy a couple of large sites in Nelson for potential developments.

Carrie says the trust has been able to average one new site a year for the past few years because it needs sites that are a minimum of 800 square metres - and preferably larger – which are near public transport and services. Those are hard to find, and then it has to compete for those sites and go

through the council consent process which all takes time.

So far, the trust has 54 homes tenanted with a further 24 being developed in Nelson, and is working with a vendor in Richmond with the hope of building 12 homes there. She says the trust is keen to make progress in Tasman, but it comes back to finding sites close to public transport and services which rules out many rural communities.

She says Nelson-Tasman is one of the least affordable places to live in the country, mostly because incomes are relatively low.

Network Tasman Engineering Student Scholarship 2024

Network Tasman is pleased to announce that Kilian Cools is the first recipient of the Network Tasman Scholarship. After careful review of all candidates, Kilian was selected for his academic achievements, leadership skills, and commitment.

Kilian grew up in the Moutere area and went to school in Richmond. He is presently in the third year of a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree at Canterbury University, and he is aiming to specialise in electricity transmission and distribution systems, which aligns well with the interests of Network Tasman.

Kilian has demonstrated a strong dedication to his studies and has shown promise in making a positive impact in his chosen field. As the recipient of this scholarship, he has received a $10,000 contribution toward his academic fees for this year as well as the offer of work with Network Tasman over the university holidays.

The Network Tasman Scholarship Scheme was introduced to support local aspiring students pursuing a career in the electrical engineering field. The annual scholarship is offered to students from the Nelson / Tasman region who are studying toward a diploma or degree in electrical engineering. Applications open in August each year.

Re-enactment marks Stoke War Memorial Gates centenary

It took more than five long years of mourning, planning, public meetings, fundraising and community spirit for the Stoke community to see its project to have a memorial erected in honour of the seven Stoke men who gave their lives during WW1, come into fruition. The first public meeting was held in the Stoke Hall, a predecessor of the Stoke War Memorial Hall, in February 1919, when suggestions were made as to what form a memorial should take.

A committee was established, and suggestions put forward included a swimming bath,

ornamental gates to the recreation ground, a sun dial on a column, improvements to the public hall and a public park or garden. Under the chairmanship of Mr H Ching the meeting agreed to establish a Stoke War Memorial Fund.

In December 1919, the next public meeting was held to consider costs with the most favoured idea being a memorial arch of reinforced concrete with marble inserts for the inscriptions of the names, together with beautifying the grounds east of the tennis courts, at a cost of 600 pounds.

By April 1922, 460 pounds had been raised and after a further 15 months, plans and specifi-

cations for the proposed memorial were considered.

It was at this time that families of the fallen, including the Jellymans and Giblins, offered to supply memorial trees and seven were planted, one for each man.

Monday, 3 June, marks 100 years to the day since the memorial gates were officially opened and there will be some re-enactments of what took place, at 2.30pm, which will be worth a look for those who are interested. Before the re-enactment ceremony takes place, the council will be attaching plaques to the seven trees, with the name of a fallen soldier on each.

Nelson pulls together

An epic tug-of-war challenge will take place in Nelson’s city centre this Friday as ‘Heave for Hospice’ returns to pull in much-needed funds for Nelson Tasman Hospice. The event is a friendly competition between teams from local businesses, sports groups, and organisations and is the finale for the NBS Hands Up for Hospice appeal month.

As of Monday, $62,914 had been raised from events, fundraisers, high teas, and general donations over the month of May, with that number still climbing.

Donna Ching-Tregidga, head of supporter engagement and income development at Nelson Tasman Hospice, says a range of teams will be participating including Gibbons Naylor, Scott Construction, Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, Child Development Services at Te Whatu Ora, Richmond Glass, WSP, Rockgas Nelson and Marl-

set to battle it out at

borough, Trafalgar Painting Company, Nelmac Kūmānu, Geeves Scaffolding, Johnston Associates, Beca Limited and Downer NZ. There are already some highly anticipated tug battles confirmed, including Tasman Mako vs NBS Nelson Giants, Nelson City Council vs Tasman District Council, and Gibbons Naylor vs Scott Construction.

“There is a trophy for the overall winner and a trophy for the group that fundraise the most,” Donna says.

Organisers also are calling for entries into the ‘Fan versus Fins’ heave for 8-14-year-old children who can register to join a team that takes on some of the Tasman Mako. Participating businesses at the top of Trafalgar St will also run ‘Happy Hour for Hospice’ from 4pm - 6pm. Heave for Hospice takes place on 31 May, from 4pm on Upper Trafalgar St.

Exotic mosquitos found at Port Nelson

Exotic mosquitos have been discovered from routine surveillance at Port Nelson earlier this month, however there is “minimal” risk to the public.

The species, culex molestus (the London Underground mosquito) was identified from a routine surveillance sample collected from one of the traps laid around Port Nelson, in early May.

The mosquitoes are found in many parts of the world, including Australia. They have

been detected at the border previously but not established in New Zealand.

Health protection officers routinely carry out surveillance checks for exotic mosquitoes around Port Nelson and at Nelson Airport.

“Health protection staff are working closely with Port Nelson, local businesses and residents to manage and minimise any impacts,” says Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Kaitātaki group manager health protection,

Sonya Briggs.

“At this stage the risk of the exotic mosquitoes establishing in New Zealand is considered low, and the risk of disease very low.

“There is not considered to be any wider public health or biosecurity risk from these mosquitoes, because there is no evidence to date that they have become established. However, we are continuing to closely monitor the situation, and have further enhanced surveillance and

trapping underway.”

Surveillance checks in areas near the port are being carried out. These involve searching for mosquito breeding sites, sampling for mosquito larvae, and removing or treating sites to prevent mosquito breeding.

Exotic mosquitoes can pose a public health risk as some species can carry serious diseases, however, to date, no mosquito-borne diseases have been contracted in New Zealand.

Hart’s reign of fire

GORDON PREECE

“I keep saying it’s my last one, but when you do quite well, you’re keen to have another go.”

Veteran Nelson Airport firefighter Murray Hart sparked a new record in the Supreme Grand Masters category at the annual Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge on 18 May. The event is the optimum challenge for firefighters across Aotearoa to burn through the pain, ascending the 51 flights of the tower’s stairs while carrying a 25kg carbon fibre cylinder, to fundraise for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

The challenge has four main categories, with the Supreme Grand Masters set for firefighters aged 60 and over.

Murray, who marks four decades fanning the flames next month, says conquering the second tallest building in the southern hemisphere for the eighth time in a recording-breaking 13 minutes and five seconds, was unexpect-

ed but “pleasing”.

“I didn’t really expect to do quite that time, I had done a lot of training, and I thought I would be similar to last year, but I was over a minute quicker,” he says.

“It’s a good cause and a great day up there too. It’s an amazing day around the Sky Tower with 1000 firefighters and all their supporters.”

The 67-year-old says his fuel

for the record was his training, which he ramped up around four months before the challenge.

“I keep pretty fit all year, a lot of hill work, and the bulk of my hard work is done on Tamaki Steps [in Tāhunanui] with a heavier set of breathing apparatus, which I actually wear up the tower.”

“I was training for an hour and a half up there virtually

First home grants scrapped

National is making it harder for people to own their own home. They’re scrapping First Home Grants, which give up to $10,000 to Kiwis who just need a hand with the last part of their house deposit.

This helped increase the supply of new housing and encouraged housing companies to build homes in a price range affordable for first home buyers. I’ve spoken to first home buyers in Nelson over the last week w ho are feeling devastated by the changes – they’ve worked hard to get their deposit together and were relying on the First Home Grant to get them over the line.

In government, Labour chose to spend money on helping Kiwis into home ownership, and built more state homes than any Government since the 1950s. The National Party chose to give a $2.9 billion tax break to landlords, and is now making it that muc h harder for thousands of Kiwis to own just one.

Blood service workers to strike

More than 290 staff at New Zealand Blood Service will strike after months of stalled negotiations. Workers will strike at 1pm this Friday for four hours and for 24 hours on Tuesday, June 4. “We waited in good faith for over seven months for NZ Blood Service and Te Whatu Ora to sort this out,” says PSA delegate Sian Dallaway. “But people are struggling with their bills now, and we just can’t keep waiting.” Lab technicians are paid between 22 and 35 per cent less by NZ Blood Service than Te Whatu Ora lab technicians, administrators between 13 and 36 per cent less and scientists between 19 and 35 per cent.

Richmond’s Raeward Fresh retail store sold its final bags of produce on Friday. Nelson Airport firefighters and challengers Matt van der Heyden and Alec Hampson joined Murray in raising more than $12,700. Around $11,000 of that was raised at the Walk the Runway event in January.

School mana hooks AA and ex AB

GORDON PREECE

Birchwood School’s inclusion focus, encouraging participation, and strong community values has scored it a sponsorship throw-in by the country’s “most trusted” insurer.

The AA Insurance Big Little Sponsorship looks for two primary school nominees to win one of two $10,000 grants for its sporting potential to gain momentum.

Birchwood was declared the winning South Island side by AA Insurance representatives, campaign ambassador and All Black legend, Keven Mealamu, and Eden Park chief executive, Nick Sautner.

Kawerau South School in the Bay of Plenty was the North Island winner.

AA Insurance says of the record-breaking 5,500 nominations, Birchwood’s focus on inclusion, strong community values, and encouraging its 230 students to participate in sport no matter their ability, resonated with the judges.

Principal Camilla Brotherton says for the school to win big and have a former All Black join in the school’s celebrations on 10 May, was a “really lovely surprise”.

“We just didn’t think it would

ever happen to us… the kids were just absolutely thrilled and so was the community. We advertised [the reveal] as a top secret with a special assembly and a special guest… $10,000 is going to be amazing for our little school,” she says.

“The Birchwood School [PTA] nominated us, they wrote some really lovely things about how we are focused on being inclusive, supporting our children to learn and grow through their academ-

ics but also through what we do in the environment and in sport.”

Camilla says the nomination kicked off following a fundraiser by students Myah Burnett, Sophie Bloom and Hailey Swart for new football goals on the school field.

“They made about $1600 from bake sales over a few weeks… but it’s not inexpensive equipment, and so the PTA thought it was a great opportunity to reach out and see if we’re lucky, and we

were,” she says.

“We’ve got some soccer-mad kids, and they will be thrilled when [the new football goals] get here in a few weeks to replace the ones that had a long life.”

Camilla says the remaining funds from the $10,000 grant will enable the school to tackle other sporting resources and opportunities.

“We’re actually going to ask the kids and the teachers to put a wish list together, and we’ll tick off some of those things that will make the biggest difference,” she says.

Camilla says an embroidered All Black jersey with the message, Birchwood Big Little Winners, was gifted at the big reveal, freebies, kai and music were offloaded, and Keven led the charge with rugby tips for the aspiring All Blacks.

“Because Keven has cauliflower ears after being in the front row of the scrums for many years, they were very intrigued, they had some questions about his cauliflower ears,” she says.

“They could tell that he was an All Black because he still looks like an All Black. The parents were also very excited to meet an All Black and have photos with him.”

Port Nelson chief retires

STAFF REPORTER

After what will be five years at the helm, Port Nelson’s chief executive, Hugh Morrison, will be retiring in mid-November 2024.

The last five years have been challenging times for Port Nelson, with the impact of Covid-19 placing risks on its people and operations, as well as creating ongoing disrupted cargo movements.

“Hugh’s leadership through this time has ensured the safety of the Port Nelson team and maintained the reputation of Port Nelson as a high-performing port,” chairman of the PNL board, Paul Zealand says. This period has also seen the port strengthen its business through projects such as the redevelopment of Main Wharf, the Slipway redevelopment, procurement of NZ’s first electric harbour crane, and the new Marlborough Inland Port (in construction).

Port Nelson has also established a 2030 Strategic Plan and 2050 Infrastructure Plan, which sets the direction and priorities for the years ahead.

Homegrown tumuaki appointed at Broadgreen

GORDON PREECE

Megan Rangiuia is no stranger to teaching and leading at local kura (schools).

After 13 years at Ilminster Intermediate School in Gisborne, including five as its tumuaki (principal), Megan is “elated” to return home after her appointment to step into Broadgreen Intermediate’s top job.

She will take over as principal from Pete Mitchener who departed in April after seven years at the helm.

Megan says she has deep connections in Te Tau Ihu (Top of the South), with generations of family who have farmed in Golden Bay since arriving in Nelson in the 1840s, and her three children were born in Nelson. She had been a deputy principal at Waimea Intermediate between 2002 and 2004 and was a Richmond Primary

“Lots of good reasons to move back home to Nelson,” she says. “[My plans are to] contin-

“My first priority is to get to know the school, the students, the kaiako [teachers] and the community… there’ll be lots of people who I’ll reach out to when I’ve got my actual feet under the desk.”

A spokesperson for Broadgreen Intermediate says its principal vacancy attracted a high calibre of strong applicants. They say Megan has a proven track record of being able to build an innovative school, focussed on achievement and in which whānau are engaged and students and staff are thriving.

Deputy principal Craig Maybee will be the school’s acting principal before Megan officially starts her new role in October.

A longtime member of Nelson Women’s Centre, which is now facing a significant financial crisis and the very real possibility of closing down, Andrea Ann Kepes, shares what this support service means to her.

I guess you could call it a feminine love story, reflecting on what Nelson Women’s Centre means to me. At the lovely old villa on Trafalgar St, we strive to support and empower women through counselling and social work services, alongside a wonderful programme of arts and crafts and personal development workshops. Over more years than I care to remember, I’ve dipped in and out of the centre, observing almost three decades of trials and tribulations. I love to drop in at whim to this feminine and gracious ‘home away from home’. We can make a hot

drink, enjoy delicious, donated baking and chat to the staff and visitors. The centre always feels tranquil, an oasis from the busy cares of the world. I have a kete (basket) of warm Women’s Centre memories. Which include observing stressed women receive the help they need, be it counselling, social work and/or free food items. I know we will resolve our situation, one way or another. Nelson Women’s Centre is vital for our local women and children, especially those in crisis change situations. You can donate to Nelson Women’s Centre on our Givealittle page.

STORM FIX AND FUNDING FINALISED

I knew when I stood for Mayor 20 months ago, just after the August ’22 storm hit, that the toughest job this term would be fixing the city from the worst disaster in 50 years. Council last week approved, after 1537 submissions and two days of debate, its 10year plan called “Beyond the Storm”. This Long Term Plan covers many issues but the most difficult was how we fix and fund the storm damage.

The total cost to Council from the storm is an estimated $89.5 million. The emergency response cost $2.3m, $19.3m is for repairing roads, $17.1m for river works, $11.1m for replacing damaged water services and $9.3m for fixing parks and streams. Stabilising landslides will cost $18.3 million and $12 million is for the buyouts of 17 landslide-affected homes.

This buyout proposal is the only practical solution to this nightmare problem. These homes have been red stickered because the landslides have made them unsafe to live in. The cost of the geotechnical work to make them safe exceeds their value. It is an anomaly that although insured, they are not eligible for full insurance or EQC payouts due to the homes having partial or no damage. If we do nothing, these families will be in limbo indefinitely and the properties will be left derelict. I was only prepared to back this buyout solution with the support of Government funding we secured last year.

The storm recovery work is about onethird done and will take a further three years to complete. The $300 per year storm recovery charge on rates bills over the next decade is required to pay for this work. It is a bitter pill to swallow but would have been $450 without the $29.7 million we have been able to secure from Government.

We revised the LTP last week to be better prepared for future disasters by repaying the debt in Council’s Emergency Fund. We are tightening the planning rules on where development can occur. We are investing tens of millions in better infrastructure. “Beyond the Storm” is a financially responsible plan for fixing our city and improving our resilience.

Their commitment to the community, evident in every facet of their operation, sets them apart from the competition and has cemented their place in the hearts of locals.

Building a legacy of trust

Shane and Ben have a combined experience of over 55 years in the automotive industry. This wealth of knowledge and expertise has been instrumental in shaping The Car Company’s strong reputation. “We’ve always focused on building honest and trusted connections,” says Shane. “Our success is a direct result of the support we receive from our community, and we believe in giving back to those who have helped us grow.” The Car Company’s ethos of community support is not just talk. Over the years, they have invested heavily in local initiatives and charities, reinforcing their commitment to the region that has supported them. Every vehicle sold by The Car Company undergoes rigorous testing and inspections, ensuring that only the best vehicles reach their customers.

This attention to detail is a testament to their commitment to quality. “If coming from overseas, each vehicle goes through three inspections before it even gets to New Zealand,” Shane explains. This meticulous process guarantees that every one of their vehicles meets the highest standards of safety and reliability. “We also buy locally and nationwide. Any make or model! We have the buying power to purchase a group of vehicles, for example, if a business needs to on sell their fleet, we can travel to you making the process easier, and can offer same-day purchase and payment. Whether looking to trade

Located at 127 St Vincent Street in Nelson the team can service all brands, makes and models and can handle everything from routine maintenance to complex repairs, ensuring that customers’ vehicles are always in top condition.

Community-driven success

The Car Company’s success is driven by their dedication to the three V’s - Value, Volume and Variety, - and the three R’s - Repeat, Referral, and Recommendation. Their staff, many of whom are long serving, embody these values, providing exceptional customer service and fostering strong relationships with clients. “Great camaraderie between the staff is key to our success,” Ben adds. “We’re locally owned and operated, and our team is like family. This creates a positive environment for both our employees and our customers.”

Looking ahead

As The Car Company looks to the future, their commitment to adaptability and innovation remains unwavering. With Ben leading the charge into new markets and technologies, The Car Company is well positioned to continue its legacy of excellence for many years to come. In a rapidly evolving industry, The Car Company is the epitome of stability, trust, and community spirit. Land the ‘best salmon in NZ’ at Anatoki

Now is the perfect time to head over the hill and experience the thrill of catching your own food and savour the delicious taste of freshly-caught salmon. Established in 1999, Anatoki Salmon Fishing & Café on Golden Bay is a much-loved destination for locals and tourists alike. Managed by husband-and-wife team Dan and Josine van der Eijk, and their close family, Anatoki Salmon Fishing & Café is easily accessible to all, and visitors are assured an adventure to remember!

“For me, winter is one of the best seasons to visit,” says Dan. “I always look forward to it as the days are beautiful and calm! With the school holidays and Matariki coming up we suggest that people come early, but we always have enough room and rods for everyone to enjoy the day. People come in who have never fished

before, but this is no problem!” Pricing is determined by the weight of the catch, and the team will clean the fish at no additional charge.

Open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm, the popular cafe will be serving their delicious salmon chowder. “This is very nice and we always have people come back for that! We also have a lovely salmon platter with different smoked salmon and sashimi which is also very popular.

“Come find a magical spot on Lake Anatoki to cast your line and land your lunch. Have your salmon hot smoked in the cafe or take it away fresh. Because it can be smoked straight after catching, the texture of the fillets is very light and airy, and we believe it is the best smoked salmon in New Zealand!”

There is no entry fee and no experience needed at Anatoki Salmon Fishing & Café as the team provide quick guidance along with the free use of fishing gear. Visitors are guaranteed to catch a fish and can be eating the fruits of their labour within an hour. Contact the team at Anatoki Salmon Fishing & Café on 0800 262 865 or email info@anatokisalmon.co.nz for more information.

Mountainbikers celebrate long-term access agreement

The Nelson mountainbiking community is celebrating after signing a long-term agreement between Nelson City Council and Ngāti Koata Ltd.

The 10 year recreational agreement allows access to Ngāti Koata whenua and creates long-term stability after the council agreed to an $80,000 one-year grant to Ngāti Koata in 2020.

Under the new agreement, Codgers and Fireball will be renamed Koata Park and Sharlands Creek will be renamed to Waitarake.

Nelson Mountain Bike Club chairperson Matt Ball says he was ecstatic to hear the announcement.

“Securing long term recreational access to Ngāti Koata whenua has been part of the club’s strategic plan and is the result of years of hard work by many people.

“We acknowledge Ngāti Koata for their rangatiratanga (leadership) and manaakitanga (community), their whenua makes up 80 per cent of our

city’s mountainbiking trails and is highly valued by the Nelson community.

“We look forward to working with both the council and Ngāti Koata to realise our shared vision to make Whakatū (Nelson) a world class mountainbiking destination.”

Nelson City Council chief executive Nigel Philpott says council received a substantial number of Long Term Plan submissions asking for access to trails on Ngāti Koata whenua to be secured.

“I’ve listened to that feedback and sat down with Ngāti Koata Limited chief executive Hemi Toia to reach an agreement that is both beneficial for our partnership with Ngāti Koata and the Whakatū/Nelson community. What’s most exciting to me is that this agreement now means Whakatū/Nelson has the potential to become a world-class mountainbiking and recreation destination.

“Mountainbiking is already a big contributor to the Nelson economy and I’m confident

that there’s plenty of room for growth. I’m looking forward to working with Ngāti Koata on the upgrades and improvements we need to take this to the next level.”

Hemi says he can “see a big, bold vision where Whakatū/ Nelson offers its local residents, family and friends who visit, and international visitors a world-class and leading experience that incorporates mountainbiking and other outdoor recreational activities”.

“This experience could be further enhanced by a cultural and environmental vision that connects us, not only with each other, but also with the whenua,” he says. “Having such a facility on the city’s doorstep is quite unique I am told, so let’s make it even more unique.”

The agreement includes the option to extend access out to 2049 and/or secure permanent access, and the option to explore the creation of a permanent forestry canopy. It begins on 1 July and lasts until 30 June 2034.

Nelson cyclists set sight on Olympic glory

JACK MALCOLM

Nelson’s newest crop of Olympic hopefuls aren’t just in it for the experience.

With three cyclists—Keegan Hornblow, Shaane Fulton, and Niamh Fisher-Black—on the New Zealand team heading to Paris, expectations of returning with medals are high.

Additionally, Finn Fisher-Black and George Bennett have been named as the country’s two road race reserves, underscoring the strong local influence on the squad.

Keegan and Shaane, both track cyclists who also share a flat in Cambridge, say the local connection was a strong motivator as they raced growing up.

Shaane notes that, although she hasn’t seen Niamh, who is on the road cycling team, in several years, it will be a special moment when they all come together at the Games.

“We all grew up and raced for years together,” she says.

“I think that’s the really special

part of it. We made do with what we had. There were times when we couldn’t use Trafalgar Park and had to travel to Blenheim.

“I’d be half the human [I am today] if I didn’t do that hard work.”

Keegan recalls many cold evenings riding loops around the Saxton Velodrome and early mornings with Tasman Performance.

“Initially, it was a bit of a coincidence, but it’s nice to have people you grew through the journey with,” he says about being named alongside his former Nelson friends and rivals.

While both acknowledged that there’s too many people to thank, Keegan wanted to give mention to Jason Craig as one of his first coaches.

Shaane had a laundry list of people to thank that “could fill up a whole paper”, with Jim Matthews and the two local clubs, Cycling Nelson and the Tasman Wheelers, at the top of the list.

She also wanted to give credit to her parents, Karen and Dean, who are both pro cyclists in past lives

all the effort, and all the cost… this is a labour of love,” she says.

“A huge thank you to everyone involved, and our sponsors were amazing.”

The event comprised a kids race, a 3km, 5km, and a 10km Elite race, and a 5km and 10km Open and Team race.

The Open race targeted competitors wishing to test the course’s taxing obstacles before competing in the elite category at future events.

themselves.

“I just got put to the sword growing up,” she laughs.

“I remember my first race I did when I was four at Trafalgar Park.”

Shaane has dreamed of being an Olympic cyclist since primary school, and sharing this experience with the friends she grew up racing alongside is the cherry on top.

Keegan’s pathway to cycling took a bit longer. “Where it all kind of stemmed from was getting selected to the Junior Worlds in 2019 when I was a Year 13. It wasn’t until I got to high school [at Nelson College] that I soon realised I wasn’t a rugby player.”

With the Olympics kicking off at the end of July, the local riders have mere weeks before their debut on the sport’s biggest stage. Despite the global spotlight, they remain grounded and appreciative of their roots.

“It’s an absolute privilege to call Nelson home,” says Shaane. “Hopefully [our success], it can spark something again for the next generation.”

Wairua Warriors

“The kids were amazing, some of them got to be helped by the pros… to have them lift a sixyear-old over the walls with their knowledge, that six-yearold may be the future of the sport in ten years,” Julia says.

“Some of the courses had different options, we took ropes away for the elites so they had less help, and the teams are allowed to help each other.

“You could have one person doing monkey bars and two people below them are lifting up their feet.”

Julia says Nelson’s Dean

Langham reigned supreme in the 10km and 5km Elite courses, and Tasman’s Breon Gravatt claimed first in the 10km Open course.

Nelson’s Cody Scott was the victorious female in the 3km and 5km Elite categories as well as claiming a bronze medal in the 10km Elite Womens. Nelson’s Johanne Delnatte prevailed in the 5km Open category.

The Glass Gladiators team comprising of Viridian Glass staff won the Team 10km category.

It’s been over a decade between drinks for Con Barrel after he stripped up and made an appearance for Marist over the weekend. With the former All Black’s (1996-97) last competitive match in 2002, he last played in a charity masters international after the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011. When Con’s nephews and current Marist players, Tom and Wil Thornalley, came to him the morning of the game asking if he could play, he told them he didn’t even have boots anymore. Once that was sorted out and he’d been registered, Con was set to go as he made a late appearance in the dying minutes of Marist’s 64-29 win over Moutere. Despite a knee replacement four years ago and the men on the field seemingly “to be getting bigger, harder and faster,” Con says he’s not as worse for wear as he thought he would be. With a taste of the game again, he hopes that he will be able to play alongside his son Cleve one day. Photo: Marist Nelson Sports Club/Facebook.

A Giant experience like no other

The Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park, the NBS Nelson Giants and Nelson Coachlines have teamed up to give local kids an unforgettable experience. They have resurrected the iconic local double-decker bus for a new lease of life, offering schools the opportunity to get up close and personal with their basketball heroes. The Giants Experience is aimed at primary-aged children, providing an all-inclusive day of fun for the five local schools who have signed up. Starting with a trip out to Saxton Stadium in the double-decker bus, the next generation of youngsters are then given a behind-the-scenes tour of their facility by the Giants.

They learn about the Giants’ team values and culture, before getting to do some skills, drills and games with their local basketball icons.

Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park chief executive, David Pattinson, says he made up his mind to support the programme “pretty quickly” after it was presented to him. “It’s part of giving back to the community, we’re a family holiday park. Anything for kids to put their devices down and get into sport is a win.”

David says they paid for the use of the bus, which was offered by Nelson Coachlines at a discounted rate. Based on the initial success of the first sessions, he says it’s something they would be keen to continue into future seasons.

Nelson Suburbs and their opposition at Saxton Field will be sitting pretty, rain or shine, after acquiring new dug-outs to the tune of $30,000. The custom-built dug-outs replaced former benches that were well past their best-by date, with Nelson Suburbs SPL coach Neil Harding accepting a cheque from Lions Foundation account manager Niki Fisher and grant committee member Doug Paulin, alongside player Dauntae Mariner, as the Lions Foundation came on board to support with funding. The foundation donated the entirety of the cost, with funding coming from their five partner venues, O’Shedigan’s Irish Bar, Post Boy Hotel, The Buxton, The New Street Steakhouse and The Sands Brewery Bar & Kitchen.
