Light bike makes its way to schools A popular light bike has made its way to Nelson Intermediate and its creator hopes more schools will follow. The bike was created by John-Paul Pochin for the Light Nelson Festival in July. Pedal power from the bike charges the LED lights on an old tree and it was a popular feature of the festival. Now the bike is at Nelson Intermediate where students can give it a go and learn how it works. The timing of the bike was perfect for the school

Intruder caught in the act A crime spree was brought to a swift end when two men used their Judo and military skills to catch the suspect red-handed. The 29 year old man was caught on the roof of the former Haven House Bed and Breakfast at around 9.30pm last Tuesday night, but only after he’d already caused damage to at least two other properties on Haven Rd. At the first property, which is currently being renovated, he stole tools and tipped out 80 litres of paint over electrical appliances causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. He then went to Pegasus Car rental and broke a window before entering the backpackers next door. Owner Otto Barron says the man broke a second story window, climbed into the bedroom and put all of the valuables in the room into a suitcase and then climbed out another window and onto the roof.

Otto and several of his housemates were home at the time and noticed him when housemate Nick Goody went outside for a smoke and saw a strange bike in the driveway. “It wasn’t an adult’s bike but not a little kid’s bike, it was just odd that it was there at that time of night so we went to put it in the shed so it was safe and had a bit of a look around,” says Nick. When Otto went to put the bike in the shed he noticed his bikes had been taken out of it and it was then the pair became suspicious that someone had been on their property. When they walked around the section to see if anything else had been moved, Nick

He alerted Otto by whispering his discovery to him and Otto says he confronted the man right away. “This is my house, my property and we’ve been working for three months to renovate it so I was really annoyed that someone would be sneaking around on the roof. I went straight to him and he told me he had a knife and would stab me if I didn’t back away. John-Paul says the bike took several months to make and it was something he had to figure out as he went. “It’s very easy for children to get one of these computers, start playing around with it and programming them and see what they can make out of it. It’s a lot more straight forward than they’d think.” He says bringing the bike to schools and showing children how it works is a great way for the Light Nelson festival to continue its work throughout the year. John-Paul says he’d like to take the bike to other schools as well.

Are snapper happy fishermen too greedy?

Helen Bush Colour Designer Nelson

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

There’s plenty more fish in the sea for now at least, but will a quota rise deplete the stock? Prime Minister John Key argues that the snapper quota debate is more talked about than the controversial GCSB Bill, as many condemn the idea of being restricted to a three snapper maximum catch off the North Island’s East Coast. But one Nelson fisherman thinks our recreational quota is too generous, and it’s about to become even more so. The Snapper 1 fishery zone currently allows for a daily catch of ten snapper tops in the Challenger Area. In the Marlborough Sounds, however, it only allows for three. But with an apparent abundance of snapper in those historically vacant waters, the Ministry of Primary Industries is proposing to lift that quota to five, which has rocked the boat of the president of the Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club. Doug McKay wrote a personal submission after reading the proposal and says many more of his club members did the same. While those opinions may have differed, Doug re-

ful lot of fish to me. Some people think it’s their God-given right to catch that amount of fish but you can still have a lot of fun and put them back, it’s not difficult.” An official announcement on the proposal will be made on October 1 and it could also include a change to the number of commercial snapper allowed to be caught. The total allowable catch in Snapper 1 is currently 306 tonnes per year. That is split between commercial (200 tonnes), Maori (16) and recreational (90) but could change to figures of 220 tonnes, 16 tonnes and 99 tonnes, making up a new 350 tonnes total. The submission cut off has already been and gone.

Power bills ‘just too much’ Andrew Board

DHB cAnDiDATES confirmED: There are 23 candidates contesting seven positions in the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board election this year. This is the fifth highest number in New Zealand, equal with Capital & Coast DHB. Six out of the current seven elected board members are seeking re-election. Villagers ‘can’t wait’ for court Your Community Newspaper

Residents of Waimea Village left a confidential meeting with their lawyer on Sunday stating they were upping the pressure in their battle with the owners of the village, Michael and Carolyn Wright. The meeting was held to discuss the residents’ court action against the Wrights over a repair and replacement fund that should have around $330,000 in it. Residents believe the money which they have paid from their levy payments is not in the account and the Wrights have refused to release documents to prove otherwise. The residents are going to court to have the fund managed by a board of trustees and say the Wrights can’t be trusted with it. Another issue that is on-going at the village is the massive levy increases. In 2010 the monthly levy fee was $80 per month. That has been upped to $125 and then $186.76. The Wrights are after another increase, this time to $304.52. That is likely to end up in arbitration with the residents rejecting the proposed increase. Several aspects of the levy proposal have caused concern among the residents, including the addition of one-off court and arbitration costs, which once added can never been taken out due to a ratchet cause in the lease. Residents still pay normal council

rates and other bills. The levy fee includes mowing of the lawn and maintenance of the common area and removal of green waste. The Wrights lawyer, Graeme Downing of McFadden McMeeken Phillips, did not return an email asking whether he thought the addition of the one off costs in the proposal was ethical. Chair of the residents committee, Jerry Rowland, says the meeting was well attended and was very informative. He declined to say what was talked about but did say it was in relation to the court case. “I can say the residents are more united and more in tune with each other now than ever before. We will fight this all the way.” The latest meeting comes after residents have complained of more “strange” behaviour from Michael Wright. Some residents told the Weekly he refused them entry to the village’s hall – owned by the residents committee – unless they signed a piece of paper. Michael has also called the police numerous times on residents and those connected with them. Police have not laid one charge in relation to any of Michael Wright’s complaints.

Buxton toilet ready for ‘wee makeover’ Buxton Carpark’s toilet block won’t be recognisable by the time its instant makeover is completed in November this year. But that is a good thing says Nelson City councillor Kate Fulton, who is spearheading the project alongside Brisbane based artist and consultant David Engwicht who has made the trip over for the task. A planning day was held on

Saturday and attended by community locals who are keen to have an input into the loo’s new look. A crowd of 40 people turned up full of ideas on what shape the toilets makeover could take, and Kate says the day was “very exciting” in terms of the ideas that were thrown around. “There were a lot of great ideas from a very positive group of people.” The project will involve

building and plumbing as well as gardening, painting, artistic creations and lighting and the community is encouraged to get involved says Kate. The makeover will take place in November, and the Nelson City Council has allocated a budget of $75,000 for it. A community led approach was decided upon after the last proposal council received for the job reached $340,785.

Future of waterfront up for debate Plans to develop several council owned properties on Wakefield Quay will be brought forward for consideration early next month. The properties were previously occupied by Four Seasons and Reliance Engineering, alongside the Anchor Building and the Customhouse Hotel. Facilitated by councillor Pete Rainey with the support of mayor Aldo Miccio, the plans hope to encourage discussion about the proposed waterfront upgrade. Local architect Ian Jack, of Irving Smith Jack Architects, who are responsible for preparing concept drawings, says the plans will highlight a multitude of benefits for the Nelson community. “The concept plans show how the whole area could be opened up for retail, hospitality and recreation opportunities, while at the same time increasing parking availability, and developing shared pathway

Locals ready to remember Merchant Navy

Robbie Williams spent several decades working at sea so he knows first-hand how tough it was. But the Tahuna man says he couldn’t imagine doing it with a couple of world wars going on around you. He’s got a few stories about it though. Robbie’s father Percy was in the Merchant Navy during both World War 1 and World War 2. His memoirs recall several interesting stories that Robbie says highlights the added stress for those in the Merchant Navy during the wars. Until four years ago the wartime efforts of those in the Merchant Navy weren’t officially recognised but the accounts of Robbie’s father, Percy Williams, clearly show the danger involved in what they were doing. Percy wrote that during WW1 a vessel called Port Kemble was blown up and sank off Cape Farewell after it sailed through a minefield laid by German raiders. He was on a different ship that went through that minefield several times before anyone knew about the mines. “Perhaps our draught was not deep enough to touch them and then again we may have been very lucky and just missed them.” In WW2 he was the master of the Totora which was owned by the Nelson-based Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co. He wrote that he had to have a course in gunnery and the Navy measured the ship

for machine gun placement, but the guns never eventuated. “We worked right through the war with one .303 as armament. I recall one trip we were instructed to proceed from Gisborne to Auckland and on arrival we were taken over by the Navy and amid much secrecy we loaded full cargo of high explosive projectiles for Lyttleton, at this particular time a German raider was in the New Zealand area. We got through alright with our .303 rifle but I’ve often thought what a prize we would have been to the Hun [German Navy].” Robbie says it’s fantastic that those who were in the Merchant Navy, many of them Nelsonians, are now recognised and he’s sure his dad would have been proud. New Zealand Merchant Navy day is on September 3 this year. The Nelson Merchant Navy Association is hosting this year’s annual commemoration at Anzac Park on August 31. It starts at 11am and everyone is welcome to attend the service.

Doubts over mayor’s spending claims The Tahunanui Business Association says it seriously doubts figures quoted to them by Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. Aldo told the association at a meeting last week that $6 million had been spent on Tahunanui recently but they say they

can’t see where and requested a breakdown of the spending by the mayor. On Tuesday Aldo told the Weekly that the figure included Wakefield Quay and if they were to take that out then it was more like $4 million. “Tahuna is a work

in progress, we’re working with different groups to make sure things are done right there. Right now we’re looking at spending $1 million on the modellers pond so to say we aren’t spending money there is off the mark.” Chair of the business association,

Mike Thomas, says Tahuna has been left out when you compare it with other suburbs in the city. “Wakefield Quay is definitely not part of Tahunanui. Much of the money has been spent on city and region wide facilities in the Tahunanui Reserve.”

He says the community is united on getting action from the council on other issues with Tahuna including high density housing, access to shopping services, stormwater, coastal erosion, Tahunanui reserve management, liquefaction and earthquake risks.

Dale’s beer goes from home brew to commercial gold Andrew Board

Dale Holland only started making his own home brew four years ago and now brews his own gold-medal winning commercial beer. Photo: Andrew Board.

In 2009 Monaco computer programmer Dale Holland thought he’d have a go at making his own home brew. His extraordinary journey from a novice to winning a gold medal at the recent NZ Beer Awards in just four years has surprised him as much as anyone. Dale quickly found a passion for making his own beer and in 2010 he made 15 litres of what he thought may be Belgian Pale Ale. He had never tried one before so decided to enter it into the New Zealand Home Brew Awards to find out from judges if it was or not. What happened next came completely out of the blue and set him onto a path as a commercial brewer. Dale’s drop was not only a Belgian Pale Ale but it was so good he won the overall prize for best beer at the awards. After the win his beer featured as a special brew at Sprig & Fern taverns as he had a strong relationship with its owners Dave Barrett and Tracy Banner. After its success he decided to launch his own label and start making commercial beer.

He called it Dale’s Brewing Co. He has since managed to get his four brews into supermarkets, including Fresh Choice, restaurants and bars all over Nelson and New Zealand. Earlier this month he won a gold medal for that very same beer at the beer awards, an incredible achievement considering his brief stint in the industry and the fact that only 41 beers out of the 541 entered, won gold. He says it’s been unbelievable. “It’s been a whirlwind, from brewing 15 litres of it at home to now brewing 4000 litres of it each time is pretty crazy.” Dale was far from the only local to win at the awards with Sprig & Fern, McCashin’s and Mussel Inn also winning medals and he says there is no nasty competition between Nelson’s craft breweries. “It’s like a big family, all the craft brewers. It’s a very cool industry.” He says his aim is to continue growing the brand and to continue having fun. Nelson Weekly is giving away two packs from Dale’s which include a beer glass and four bottles of beer. To enter, email your name, phone number, age and address to editorial@ nelsonweekly.co.nz.

Nelson paua poacher goes to jail A paua poacher has been sentenced to 11 months in prison after being caught with over 10 times the daily paua limit. Day Van Tang, 30, was found guilty in Nelson District Court last week after he was caught with two sacks containing 139 paua, most of which were undersized. Tang admitted knowing the daily limit and said he did not measure any of the shellfish, says Ministry for Primary Industries district compliance manager Ian Bright. The court also banned him from fishing for three years, and the vehicle and gear used in the offending were seized. Tang was caught following a paua hunt with his brother, Hanh Tang, at a secluded spot on the Kaikoura coast in July last year. Fishery officers apprehended the pair as they were returning to Nelson following a tip-off from the public. Hanh Tang was fined $2000. Ian says he was pleased to see the courts sending a strong message that this kind of blatant poaching would not be tolerated. "This isn't the first time he has been in front of the courts for offences involving paua and it goes to show that the message simply won't get through to some people. I hope he takes the time to reflect on the foolishness of his actions. He has a long while to do so."

Show time for Nayland's teachers and parents For five years parents and teachers of Nayland Primary School have been singing, dancing and laughing their way to a fundraising goal for a new indoor facility at the school. After next month’s show they’ll have raised enough to make it happen, but don’t expect that to mean an end of the famous production. Nayland principal Janice Gulbransen says they will have raised their $100,000 target after this year’s show which will mean work on their new multi-purpose building can start in November. “The first year we raised $13,000 and it’s grown every year. Now, after five years, we have enough to build our new facility,” she says. Money from the Ministry of Education will also be used for the building which will allow the school to hold assemblies featuring the entire school, science fairs, drama and arts, gymnastics, school discos and host speakers. This year’s show is called Class of ’69 and will feature 30 parents and teachers. One of the organisers, Trish Parkins, says ticket sales have been really strong with the final show already sold out. “It has a really good reputation now and we sell a lot of tickets really fast but we still have plenty to sell and we want a full house for each show.” Last year’s show raised $25,000 and Janice says it is now a Nayland tradition. “We don’t do a school fair, this is what we do and it’s different to everyone else. We’ve got amazing parent support and

Photo: Andrew Board. one of the successes of the show is that we always get new people and it’s the same this year.” Janice says the show builds a strong connection between parents, students and the school. “We’re really lucky, it’s built a real sense of community around the school. Not just for people in the show and all those who help out on the night doing all sorts of jobs adds to the whole sense of community.” She says some parents have taken part each of the five years and it’s especially

nice for them to see their hard work achieve the desired result. The cast have been preparing for the show since February and it has been put together by parent Margie Meleisea and the script written by teacher Mare MacMahon. It follows classmates from their school days in 1969 to their reunion. Tickets for the shows held on September 14, 20 and 21 are available from the school and the cast says anyone coming along should expect a great night out with plenty of laughs.

With the global market yet to come, local students took on the Nelson Market on Saturday, successfully setting up shop and showcasing the products they’ve created as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme. The programme requires students to create, run and operate their own businesses and saw students from Nayland College, Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls take on the challenge of meeting face to face with their clients. By setting up their own market stall, the students were able to

Robert Panzer, top of the south Youth Enterprise Scheme coordinator says there was a wide range of businesses across the schools that were very impressive, and the students were learning what it takes to not only dream up but run a good business. “It’s about the experience of building a business and gaining the confidence to grow it, the students have some really great and innovative ideas.”

Reg’s 40 years at Enza Your Community Newspaper

Forty years, two million apple bins and 37,000 hours on a forklift. They are impressive stats and Nelson man Reg Nicholson has done it all with a smile on his face. Last week Reg retired from ENZA Foods NZ after 40 years at the company. He started in a packing shed in 1974 but after three weeks secured a job as a storeman and a few years after that became a forklift driver. His workmates say it’s his skills on a forklift and his cheery demeanour that he will be remembered for. “The thing with Reg is that he’s even smiling now, smiling right up until the last day,” says workmate for 24 of those 40 years Mike Donnelly. “That’s been my motto,” says Reg. “Everyone gets a wave and smile from me, even if they don’t wave back.” To go along with the vast number of years and hours he’s clocked up, Reg has also had a few different names at the top of his pay check. When he started it was called Industrial Products, Division of the Apple and Pear Board before undergoing several changes including Fruit Processors, ENZA processors, ENZA Foods and now ENZA Foods New Zealand. Reg’s main job was to unload bins of fruit from incoming trucks and reload them with empty bins, ready to be taken back to the orchards. In the early 1990s that could include handling up to 6000 bins a day, 3000 full bins and 3000 empties, although that number has now dropped to around 2400 on a busy day. The company uses the

He says he’s loved the 40 years. “The reason why we’ve all stayed here so long is that every year is different, because every season the growing has been different

so you don’t know what’s coming in. Even though we’re on the one site, the variety keeps you going and keeps you interested.” He says he got to know “every bump” in the yard and will keep his hand in it, staying on as a casual worker when needed during

the busy periods. But the immediate future doesn’t include any apples says Reg. He has a few old cars to work on and a few gardens to maintain. “I’m quite happy with that and I’m looking forward to having a bit more time in my life.”

Flashman If you are building or renovating, then start as you mean to go on and say no to a leaky home or building. For strong, durable cladding and flashing systems and the peace of mind that comes with them, talk to Flashman, the kiwi owned business built on years of weathertightness experience repairing and correcting the effects of bad building practice and the use of inferior materials and flashing practices, that together have caused billions of dollars damage to as many as 80-100 thousand homes throughout the country. Flashman is a fully NZ owned nationwide team of industry veterans who specialise in the design and installation of premium quality, durable, highly innovative, weathertight Cladding and Flashing Systems that have been BRANZ Appraised and tested to hurricane conditions of 232Kph. Flashman offer high performance weather tight systems for homes across the Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and Buller regions. Their cladding and flashing systems are based on sound building and scientific principles which have proven reliable and trustworthy over many centuries in buildings all over the world. Their low maintenance exterior alu-

minium and flashing systems offer timeless weatherboard cladding that won’t rust, rot, crack, twist or warp. With no need to paint and unlimited colour options in both bright and dark colours, the opportunities are endless and the low maintenance products save you a fortune in scaffold and regular painting costs. Flashman offer Bevelboard and Dualboard cladding systems (Dualboard can be fixed horizontally or vertically hence the name). Both of which offer either an architectural or traditional, classic look without the repetitive and costly maintenance care required of weatherboard, ply, fibre cement or plaster finishes. With a 100 Year serviceable life, both systems lend themselves to residential and commercial buildings and result in a strong, clean, modern look with seamless joints for extreme weather tightness. A whopping 50% of leaks found in leaky homes occur at the window or door cladding junctions. The owners and inventors of the patented Flashman Flashing System have traced many of these leaks to the widespread use of sealant as a means of flashing. Many homes constructed today are still using sealants as the main method of flashing.

Before an installation by Flashman... Flashings are basically steel, aluminium or other metal or durable materials that prevent water ingress at a junction or join in the roof or exterior walls. Windows and door openings are the most vulnerable aspect of any building. If water can’t get into these joints, the structure will be weathertight. Sealant is not a long term flashing alternative. Billions of dollars in home repairs and rebuilds bear this out. Homes and other structures without

...and after. robust flashings of sound design and durability have an exponentially higher chance of “Best Practice” flashing design and installation. Their cladding and flashing systems are sealant-free, resulting in a robust, good looking, long-term, complete exterior cladding and flashing systems that simply won’t let you down. While the Flashman reputation is nationwide their values are still local and that is why so many Nelsonians trust Flash-

man when it comes to building or renovating their homes. Their Nelson team (backed up by a national head office) provide Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and Buller regions with expert design, fabrication, installation expertise and advice in all areas of exterior cladding and flashing, providing peace of mind through avoidance of future leaks and structural damage. Visit www.flashman.co.nz for more information.

Low maintenance exterior aluminium cladding system Timeless weatherboard cladding that won’t rust, rot, crack, twist or warp BevelBord is a COMPLETE cladding & flashing SYSTEM which combines unsurpassed weather tightness with classic, ageless design. The BevelBord cladding system is designed, fabricated, installed and warranted (only) by Flashman. What are the benefits of Aluminium cladding over timber and fibre cement weatherboards? • Won’t rot, twist, crack, warp or suffer from resin bleed. • Doesn’t need painting. • Low maintenance – clean with a hose. • Low life cycle cost compared to other claddings - not just the initial cost but the ongoing cost of painting every 7-10 years. • Lower scaffolding costs than with painted claddings. Because the cladding is prepainted with durable powdercoating, the scaffold is removed immediately after the cladding is installed. • No extra time spent painting and re-scaffolding in order to repaint every 7-10 years. • Traditional, classic look but with none of the repetitive and costly maintenance care required of weatherboard, ply, fibre cement or plaster finishes. • Lends itself to residential and commercial buildings.

• Strong clean modern look with seamless joints for extreme weathertightness conditions. • 50 year minimum durability. • 15 year Product Warranty. • 10 year Installation Warranty. • Aluminium is available in a huge abundance of supply and is easily produced and recycled. The choice of aluminum is a responsible environmental decision. • No reliance on sealants. When Flashman Products are used you enter a Sealant Free Zone. • Permanent material. • The life of the cladding will outlast the building in most cases.

Choose Richmond Glass to double glaze your existing windows Retro-fit double glazing lets you enjoy the warmth and comfort of your existing home by replacing your single glass with the latest ThermaTech double glazing. Richmond Glass has been carrying out this straightforward process in many different kinds of homes, mainly around the Top of the South Island but also as far south as Arthurs Pass, for several years, giving homeowners warm results while also lowering their energy costs. Whether you have timber or aluminium framed windows, Richmond Glass has a double glazing solution to suit your needs. If you have aluminium-framed windows, a retro-fit could not be more simple. Richmond Glass replaces the existing exterior glazing beads with the manufacturer’s double glazing beads. Where that’s not possible, Richmond Glass uses its own multi-fit double glazing retaining beads, and where necessary, its new opening sashes. The new beads are powder coated or anodised to closely match the colour of your existing window frames. If you have timber-framed win-

dows, Richmond Glass uses the patented ‘Retro Fit NZ’ drainage adaptor energy saving system which allows all existing timber windows to be retained. With a retro-fit you have the best of both worlds; your home is virtually unchanged plus you gain all the benefits of double glazing. The work is quick and unobtrusive. Richmond Glass experts will measure your windows, the new units will be made locally in Nelson and a date set for your double glazing to be installed. Richmond Glass advises you every step of

the way. One of the company’s home improvement representatives will call on you and outline your options. A quotation is supplied without cost or obligation. Richmond Glass also checks that the task can be done within the building’s structure and that all technical specs and measurements are correct. Dealing with Richmond Glass you know that your home is entrusted to a leader in the glazing industry in New Zealand. Whatever the size or shape of your windows, Richmond Glass will handle it.

How does double glazing work

The two sheets of glass are line bonded by computer control to precise tolerances with a special dual seal around an aluminium spacer. Individual windows up to 3.15 by 2.4 metres can be produced.

ensuring improved warmth and cooling in your home and also reducing energy costs by significant amounts.

Stay warm without condensation As a building’s interior is warmed, there is an increased prospect of condensation, mould and mildew. Condensation forms when warm air containing moisture meets a cold window surface. If the conditions are right “dew point”

Richmond Glass uses ThermaTech double glazing which consists of two or more panes of glass separated by an aluminium spacer, bonded together to form a completely sealed unit called an Insulating Glass Unit or IGU. Heat and cold pass through single glass, whereas ThermaTech units trap a layer of air or Argon gas between two panes, creating a kind of blanket that protects the warmth of your interior. This reduces heat transfer from inside to outside during winter and outside to inside in the summer months,

14 Gladstone Road, Richmond & 34 Street Vincent St, Nelson

is reached and condensation forms. As the inner pane of ThermaTech glazing remains substantially warmer than single glazing, condensation is dramatically reduced. Nothing can completely eliminate condensation but ThermaTech double glazing comes close. In many cases moisture problems disappear forever, while in other situations just a small amount of condensation forms at the bottom of a window or frame. This is caused by factors such as ventilation rather than glazing. If you’re building new or have an existing home that needs warming then call Richmond Glass.

If you’re spending less than you earn, use your budget to work out how much you can put aside each pay to improve your financial position. We call this ‘paying yourself first’. If you’re spending more than you earn, use your budget to see where your money is going. Then see if there are any ways you can cut your spending or increase your income. Your budget needs to be accurate or it won’t work. Give yourself time to get all the information you’ll need, including: • A record of your day-to-day spending. Keep receipts from your shopping, and gather up bank statements and bills from the last three months. These will show regular expenses like rent, mortgage, hire purchase, credit cards, phone, power and insurance. • A list of annual costs. Think about things you pay for less regularly like vehicle licensing, medical expenses, gifts and holidays. • Your income details. A list of any money you get such as your pay, benefits or allowances, NZ Super or interest

earned on savings. • Savings. Details of any regular savings you make. • Budgeting isn’t just about watching your spending. How much you earn also affects whether you have money left over for saving or paying off debt. • Why you need to grow your income • If your income doesn't grow you’ll effectively earn less each year just because of inflation. So when you're planning your finances, don't forget to include goals for growing your income. • Know what you’re worth • Do you know what someone in your position with your experience and skills should be earning? Does your employer? • To find out what you're worth, read the situations vacant in your local paper or check out the online job sites. You could even contact some recruitment agencies to find out what a similar job to yours is currently paying. If you need help making a budget, or if you are having trouble making ends meet, contact a budget adviser. Biz Rescue Ltd There are myriad reasons why businesses struggle or fail. The effects of such struggles are not limited to the business environment but impact on the emotional health of the owners, their relationships and families. So if your business is in this worrying situation one thing is clear – it’s time to get your “head out of the sand” and face reality. This will involve asking help from your accountant. If their contribution has been limited to annual accounts it’s time to get them more involved with diagnosing the problems and brainstorming solutions with the aid of cash flow forecasting etc. “Where there’s a will there’s a way” - if both the energy and strategies are present there is a future for your business. ADVERTORIAL

Bank’s customer first focus brings better banking to Nelson TSB Bank was set up in 1850 on the principals of self-reliance and independence. And 160 years on, those principals are still true today. It has grown into New Zealand’s largest and strongest independent bank. It’s been a great success story, but not one without its challenges. Back in 1985 the government proposed to merge all of New Zealand’s twelve independent banks into one big one. They delivered an ultimatum – get in line or be doomed. TSB Bank decided they didn’t want to throw away 130 years of independence. They knew it wouldn’t be in the best interests of their customers. The pressure to merge was intense – from the other banks, and the government. TSB Bank stood firm. The merger went ahead without them. But within a few years it faltered and was sold off to a big Aussie bank. How did it work out for TSB Bank? They went from strength to strength – with customers from Cape Reinga to Bluff, to all corners of the world. They’re still making their own decisions. Still giving customers the kind of care and attention they’ve always been known for. Putting customers first is as important to them today as it was nearly 28 years ago. As far as they’re concerned, it’s just a better way to bank.

100% New Zealand owned Not having overseas owners means that they can make decisions based on what’s best for their customers. So if they want to NOT charge you cheque, ATM1 or EFTPOS transaction fees, it’s up to them. Having real people on the other end of the phone when you call? That’s their choice too.

Customer first philosopy TSB Bank has been rated highest for customer satisfaction in the banking category over and over again. Most recenty they were awarded Canstar Blue’s 2013 ‘Most Satisfied Customers in Banking’ award which questions Kiwi’s on their satisfaction with their Bank across seven categories. It’s hardly surprising when you consider their amazing customer service record. So what’s their secret?

TSB Bank have a philosophy of low or no fees. There are no cheque, EFTPOS or bank owned ATM* fees, on any of their accounts. So how exactly do TSB Bank make their money? The oldfashioned way – they earn it.

Strong financial performance

Where does your money go?

TSB Bank’s Managing Director/CEO Kevin Murphy says:

TSB Bank has just reported an impressive 10.6% increase in pre-tax profit for the last financial year. Their Capital Adequacy Ratio (an industry measure of financial strength), at 14.56% continues to be one of the strongest of all banks in New Zealand. Kevin says “We’re totally New Zealand owned and all of our funding is obtained from within New Zealand – we rely wholly on the deposit support of our customers.”

Convenient banking Wherever you are in New Zealand, or the world, banking with TSB Bank is easy. There’s an office right here in Nelson, on the corner of Bridge and Trafalgar Streets. If you can’t make it to TSB Bank’s offices, HomeBank is their Internet, phone and text banking service – you can access your accounts, make payments, review transactions and transfer money. [my]bank2, the Bank’s mobile banking

TSB Bank’s investment strategy has always been somewhat conservative, and largely home loan focused. As Kevin Murphy explains: “Most of our investments, up to 70% of our assets in fact, go into providing home loans for everyday New Zealand families. This has been our investment mainstay for over 100 years now, and it will continue to be so.”

Full range of accounts on offer TSB Bank offers a rewarding range of personal cheque, transactional, savings and investment accounts. Whatever you want to do with your savings, TSB Bank has an option to suit.

Taking care of all your banking needs It’s not just savings that TSB Bank does well. If you’re in the market for a home loan, TSB Bank takes a flexible approach - you can mix and match from a range of options to suit your finances and lifestyle.

Mini celebration for car One of the world’s most famous small cars enjoyed a big celebration over the weekend, and fanatics from all over Nelson turned up to join in the festivities. Minis in Nelson Inc. honoured the birthday of their namesake on Sunday, marking the car’s 54th anniversary since its release to the public in 1959. Members of the 30-strong club parked up at at the World of Wearable Arts and Classic Cars Museum to show off their ride. Decades of different versions of the pint sized car were showcased, and fans spent the day celebrating the “easy to fix” “great to drive” and “cheap to run” vehicle. The Tasman Titans have made the perfect start to its rugby league South Island championship defense, cruising past the West Coast Chargers 40-12 in Tahunanui on Saturday. The South Island series pits the Titans against Otago Whalers, Southland Rams, West Coast and Canterbury, with the top two teams squaring off in a straight final on September 28. Last year the final was won by Tasman at Trafalgar Park. Coach Phil Bergman was very happy with his side’s dominant display, running nine tries in the rout, including three to star centre Callum Smith. “We were probably expected to win, they’re not as big as some of the other teams in the competition,” says Phil. “I think we were just too good for them on Saturday.” Maloni Lama and Pene Webber both bagged two tries each while Kaiapa Paul and Jason Sekai also dotted down. With a bunch of new faces in the squad this year, Phil was still confident he has the side to win back the championship, hinting that it is probably Tasman’s strongest ever line up. “I think our backline is absolutely stunning and brimming with talent. We’ve got considerable depth in nearly every position and our forwards are great,

Warriors the latest big name coming to town The Warriors are the latest big sporting team to hint at playing a match in Nelson and mayor Aldo Miccio says they won't be the last. Last week the Nelson mayor met with New Zealand Warriors management in Auckland and all but confirmed a deal to have the NRL rugby league team to play a pre-season game on Trafalgar Park in early 2015. It comes weeks after the Cricket World Cup was confirmed to come to Nelson and that the Blackcaps would also play on Saxton Oval this summer. Aldo says he's also in talks with the Crusaders to come back to Nelson in 2016 and every year after that and has another big announcement about more international sport coming to Nelson in the coming weeks. "For the past 20 years Nelson has been punching below its weight in terms of getting sport here. Now we're starting to get

Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio at Mt Smart Stadium last week to arrange a pre season game for the Warriors in Nelson. where we should be again." He says having the Tasman Makos, Nelson Falcons, the Blackcaps, the Warriors and the Crusaders coming to play regularly in

Nelson was important for the city. "It gives our youngsters role models to look up to and is also good for the heart of the city, for it to be a vibrant, exciting place to live."

Aldo says the Warriors are keen to explore the possibility of hosting a week-long camp in the region to coincide with the pre-season fixture and that the match will be well supported. "We'll sell out Trafalgar Park. Rugby league has a big following in Nelson and it doesn't matter what sport people play whether its hockey, football or rugby, most sports people also enjoy following league." The Warriors also have an obvious link with the city as its captain Simon Mannering is from Nelson. Aldo says the Warriors have been a team he has been keen to bring to Nelson but it was from a meeting brokered by Duco Events promoter and former Kiwi rugby league player Dean Lonergan that got the deal over the line. He says the paperwork still needs to be sorted but both parties are confident of its success. The deal involves no funding from Nelson City Council.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The 2013/14 Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season gets ready to kick off on October 1. Some big changes to the club over the last two years has seen membership steadily growing and it looks like it’s not going to slow down for the next 12 months. A change in venue for the Tasman Bay Cruising Club will see our once a month club day Sunday afternoon socials, in the heart of the Nelson Marina. The club season extends eight months from October through to May, with prizegiving in June. Boat fishers, kayakers, jetskiers, land based anglers, divers and fresh water fisher folk are all welcome with senior men, ladies and junior sections to enter. While there is a certain amount of competition between members within the club, you are more than welcome to join us, just for the social side of the club. We hope to encourage more families into the club by having our club day starting time at 3pm and going until 5pm. There will be a sausage sizzle, raffle and our usual fish of the month awards along with a "bugger" award. The club has had some excellent speakers in previous seasons and social events that gave talks on things like boating education, MFish (now MPI), commercial fishing, the rescue helicopter as well as club members giving informative talks on different fishing techniques, what gear to use and how to set it up. These proved to be very popular and will continue for this season. The other big change for the club is a shift from weight per kg for club points to length based. This is in line with the club's efforts to promote catch and release fishing as well as only taking enough for a feed. It has always been a concern of the club having its members taking breeding size snapper so they can weigh them in for club points

when many of the members said they would have preferred to release them. We took this on board and have changed to a length based system where a member can catch a 9kg snapper, take a picture of it on an official measure board then release the fish. Photos would then be emailed into the weigh master and a point per centimetre system will decide who has the biggest fish and most points. The club calendar last year included trips away to Okiwi Bay, French Pass and Havelock and will be repeated again this year all going well with the weather. Last season also used local charter boat operator Seabird charters for those club members that don’t have boats big enough to get up to D’urville Island so they can have a taste of some of the hot action the area offers. We have found Barry and Lynley Bird excellent operators that have given our club members some great fishing experiences. This season we will also be having some club outings targeting areas closer to home like Rabbit Island, Abel Tasman and Cable Bay, for those in smaller boats wanting to learn the ropes with other members. Also another benefit of belonging to a club is that some weekends guys go out and find a certain bait or area is working better than others and as a club we can share that information to members, so everyone benefits. But you need to be a member and on our email list to get this up to date information. • The club will be holding an Open Day on September 8 at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club starting at 3pm. The DBFC invites all existing members and anyone interested to come along and join the club on open day. editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz The kings of the court, Solly’s Nelson Pine are off to Auckland to regain the national volleyball club championship it won in a thrilling five setter in Nelson last year. With the bulk of the squad returning for another season, including three New Zealand players – one being 2012 tournament MVP Patrick Shone – and being coached by Nelson’s coach of the year Colin Redpath, there is an air of confidence in the Nelson Pine camp that title number two could be claimed in Auckland this weekend. But where exactly that Nelson Pine camp has been based during the competition build-up is one of the unique scenarios faced by the South Island’s top team. With ten of the 12 players calling themselves Nelsonians, it’d be easy to overlook the fact that most of them are situated in different corners of the country, including four based in Wellington. But the lure of the blue jersey and the goal of a second championship have been strong enough for them to return for another season. “The logistics are always a challenge but we develop all these fantastic players and in the past others have benefited from that. Now that we’ve managed to fundraise some money and get some good local support we can put a Nelson team together with the best of the best,” says coach Colin. “It’s a juggling act but it works and having Patrick who is the best setter in New Zealand and Ben Glue who has just returned from playing professionally in Jordan means we have a core SP

New Zealand rep Patrick Shone will again lead Nelson Pine at the VNZ Club Championship. group of players to play around.” But one player that won’t be in Auckland is Charlie Stewart who was named top passer at the tournament last year but has since taken up a professional contract in Europe. If Nelson Pine go on to taste victory he will be able to personally congratulate three of the players shortly after, however, with Patrick, Ben and Jack Redpath all being selected alongside him in the New Zealand squad that will contest world cup qualifying in Japan a week after the tournament. Another thing Nelson won’t have this year is a vocal home crowd, with a packed Trafalgar Centre audience watching in awe as the Pines clawed back to win last year. “Going to Auckland is certainly going to be a challenge. We’re on their turf and they don’t like the idea of a team from the South Island coming up and beating them. So we’ll be marked but we’ve got a strong squad so we’ll see how we go.” Molten Nelson Women will be competing in the women’s division while the Nelson Pine Saplings will compete in the second division having narrowly missed out on the top 12.

Suburbs end season on a high Having fallen short during the business end of the season, an AMI Nelson Suburbs side with nothing but pride and second place to play for managed to bang in five goals in its last Mainland Premier League football match, routing Nomads 5-1. Having led by just the single goal at half time, Suburbs looked clinical in the second spell with forwards Ryan Stewart, Gagame Feni, Ben Wright and Jerry Donga finding plenty of holes in the weak Nomads defence. Ryan, Gagame (2) and Ben all scored goals in the game with substitute Neil Connell also nabbing one on Suburbs club day. The victory and the margin mean Suburbs should finish second place, behind winners Cashmere Technical and ahead of last year’s champions Ferrymead Bays. And mathematically, while Suburbs could finish as low as third place if Ferrymead win by six goals this weekend, playercoach Ben Wright says this season has still been an improvement on last year and believed it was

important to finish on a high note. “Absolutely. More than anything in our last game of the season we just wanted to put in a good performance and get a few goals, which is what we did,” says Ben. “But overall hopefully we’ll finish second and that’s an improvement, which means we’re going in the right direction.” With a number of new or returning players blooded into the Suburbs squad, Ben praised the defensive line of Mark Johnston, Johnny Gough, Davi Maciel Gonzalez and Sean Parkes – with the latter three all making the grade after a successful spell in division one with FC Nelson last year. But as has been the case all throughout the years, settling on a consistent squad during the course of multiple seasons can be difficult with younger players moving out of the region to pursue employment, further education or travel, and that’s “just the reality of amateur football”, according to Ben, who was hopeful of pushing for the premiership next year.
