Students give arts fest a lift

A thousand students from 25 local schools gave shoppers and city workers some entertainment last week, performing at 1903 Square as part of the Nelson Arts Festival. Stage One was set up across the road from the cathedral on Trafalgar St and invited musical and cultural groups from schools around the region. Formerly called Red Square, the

week-long event is a highlight of the Arts Festival says its director Sophie Kelly. “Stage One is a great platform for showcasing Nelson’s young talent and it’s an incredibly positive experience for students to perform for their community.” The performances varied from kapa haka, ukulele, choirs and even chime bars. There were also a number of rock bands from primary schools,

while intermediate and secondary schools included jazz, concert bands and brass ensembles. Stage One moved to 1903 Square two years ago as it doesn’t require road closures and has an existing stage, making it more convenient for organisers. The annual Nelson Arts Festival finished yesterday and it was another huge success, says Sophie.

Woman shocked by thief A would-be thief was sprung in the middle of a home invasion last week when the home owner caught him in the act. Arriving at her Aldinga Ave home in the middle of the day, Michelle Hansen was shocked to find she’d busted someone midburglary. “I came home unexpectedly at about 10.30am. As I came down the driveway I popped the garage door open and I saw something move through the back glass door of the garage.” Unsure if it was a cat or a person, Michelle yelled out to see who it was and came face-to-face with a complete stranger. “I just screamed out ‘who’s there?’ ‘what are you doing on my property?’ And next thing this six foot Maori or

Polynesian guy is coming towards me covering his head with his hood.” As the intruder headed off down the driveway Michelle says he said he’d got the wrong house. “I ran after him and said ‘I work bloody hard for what I’ve got, you should get yourself a job’ but he just kept on running. He must have thought I was pretty crazy to chase him.” For Michelle it was a worst case scenario after her teenage daughter was paid a visit by someone just weeks before, during the school holidays. She believes the same man knocked on the door of her home but was

scared off once he realised someone – Michelle’s daughter – was home. “I think he had staked the house out the first time around and came back to break in.” As the owner of a central city food cart, Michelle says she feels like she may have been targeted. “People know who we are and they know where we live. I do think maybe he’s seen us somewhere, followed us home. I think they think there’s cash here or something they can steal and sell for cash but there’s nothing.” Michelle says she’d like the man who broke into her home to know there was no point and that he wouldn’t have found anything worth stealing. “We don’t

have any valuables in the house, we live fairly simply, we aren’t wealthy people. But we work bloody hard for what we’ve got.” Police say they haven’t found the intruder yet but are still following lines of inquiry and the case remains open. Michelle says the thing that makes her most angry about the situation is that “people think they can come and help themselves to what other people are working for. “I haven’t had more than ten days off in a row in nearly five years. And here’s somebody that is sitting on their arse and just wants to come round here and help themselves.” Michelle says she will have an alarm system installed this week and recommends that others do

Nelson’s historic Suter Art Gallery is expected to announce it has reached a fundraising total of $12 million at its AGM tomorrow, meaning it can proceed with an extensive upgrade of the gallery. The gallery was granted $2.3 million from the government on Sunday, the second to last piece of a giant fundraising puzzle. The final piece – an application to the Lotteries Foundation – is expected to come through before tomorrow night’s AGM which will give the trust the $6 million it needed. Nelson City Council will match that with $6 million of ratepayers’ money. Chair of the Suter Art Gallery Trust, Craig Potton, says the government announcement came as a “shock” but it was an “absolutely delightful” shock. “We’re over the moon. The gallery is on a roll, we’re filling all the openings and growing our permanent collection so we’re bursting at the seams and the seams are falling apart anyway so we really need this upgrade.” Craig says once the money is raised it will only take a few

He expects work to begin in July or August next year. “It will be the biggest art project in Nelson ever, just the sheer cost and size of it. We’re proud of the fact that Nelson people have responded positively. It’s been the ratepayers, the special interest arts people through their giving and the government.” The latest grant, from the Regional Museums and Art Gallery Capital Fund, was awarded to The Suter on Sunday in a public presentation by Hon Chris Finlayson, Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the grant is an incredible milestone that brings the gal-

lery’s refurbishment one step closer to reality. “It is truly great news to receive a grant of this size. We were eligible for government funding thanks to the generous people of Nelson who have shown tremendous local support for the project. Clearly, The Suter is a community treasure that is valued. “I’m sure I speak for all of Nelson when I say that I am looking forward to seeing construction start soon and this wonderful facility starting another facet of its life.” Craig paid tribute to his committee and in particular Dame Ann Hercus, who headed up the fundraising for the project. The Suter Art Gallery is the oldest continuously used art gallery in New Zealand.

Nelson’s biggest ship arrives in port Crowds at Fisherman’s Wharf watch the oil storeage ship Raroa enter Port Nelson on Monday morning. Photo: Andrew Board. The biggest ship to ever enter Port Nelson attracted crowds of hundreds on Labour Day. Raroa is in port to receive an $80 million makeover and is expected to be at Port Nelson for at least a month. Hundreds of people lined the waterfront for prime viewing of the 250 metre ship as it entered through the Cut at around 10am on Monday morning. Dozens more hung out the front windows of their waterfront apartments to get a good view. Port Nelson Harbour Master Dave Duncan says five tug boats were used to get

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Raroa into port and it went smoothly, considering the size of the ship. “It all went very well, no problems at all and we appreciated that everyone stayed clear of us and made it easier.” Port Nelson won the contract to fix the oil storage ship last month and the contract will see around 200 workers fly into Nelson to work on it, as well as local workers.

Raroa is usually based in the Maari oil field off the Taranaki coast and will return there after the upgrade. Martin Taylor was at the fisherman’s wharf with his two kids to watch Raroa come in, he says it was an impressive sight. “Because it was Labour Day I thought I’d bring the boys down to have a look, it certainly fills up a fair chunk of the haven doesn’t it? Very impressive.”

Free parking but tickets total $64K Despite the hype of free parking in Richmond, it hasn’t stopped more than 1300 infringement notices being issued in Tasman. From October 2012 until October of this year, 1343 infringement notices were issued, totalling around $64,000 in fines. The reason for the tickets, which range from $12-$150, is due to people parking beyond their restricted time limit in Richmond, Mapua, Motueka and Takaka. Though Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne admits even he was guilty of picking up a parking ticket in the past, he believes it is important to have restricted time limits as it prevents workers hogging up the convenient spots generally used by shoppers in the heart of town. “That’s what the restrictions are for,” he says. “I’ve certainly had a parking ticket myself because I knew there was free parking but totally ignored all of the signs and I parked in a time restricted area.” Kevin Gear of Richmond Unlimited says free parking is a unique point of difference, opposed to Nelson’s paid parking, which makes it more convenient. However, he believes a time

restriction needs to be in place so people do not take advantage of it. He was not surprised by the figures, which averaged fewer than four parking infringements each day. “To be honest I hadn’t really considered it but 1300 doesn’t seem a great number. That doesn’t seem high and it indicates most people seem to respect other peoples’ needs.” Cathy Madigan of Uniquely Nelson was not surprised by the figures either. She says the reason parking regulations exist is to ensure people aren’t parking there all day. “A retail centre needs that turnover in traffic to be viable and if people park there all day, which is something the city workers are guilty of, no one can find a park in town.” The debate of free parking in Richmond versus paid parking in Nelson is common amongst shoppers and Cathy believes people were so carried away with their one dollar an hour parking fee that they ignored the fact it was in place to keep traffic turning over. “Both retail centres have time limits and people need to respect that.”

Tasman Makos celebrate winning the ITM Cup Championship on Friday night. A crowd of 6000 cheered them on to victory. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Thousands cheer Makos to title The celebrations hadn’t stopped late on Sunday night, two days after the Tasman Makos created history by winning the ITM Cup Championship for the first time. Second five-eighth Tom Marshall labelled Friday’s 26-25 finals win over Hawke’s Bay as “ugly” and admits he was pretty depressed walking back to the try-line on the 79th minute as

the visitors scored what could have been a match winning try. First five-eighth Ihaia West, who was struggling with his kicking all night, skewed his chance wide to hand Tasman their first ever title and a spot in the Premiership for next season. It’s fair to say the end of season party would have had a more sombre tone had his shot gone over. Instead, Nelson erupted.

The home of genuine sourdough and levain based European style bread and hand crafted Pastries

The full house at Trafalgar Park had witnessed a piece of history, and Tom says it means “everything” to him and the rest of the team. “It’s everything that we ever wanted since the Makos had started,” he says. “You look around and the whole region, they’re all proud of you. The boys worked so hard.” For full coverage of the Makos win, see page 29.

Bank queries Suburban Club’s books

The chairman of the Nelson Suburban Club has issued another plea to members – use it or lose it, as its bank begins to ask serious questions. Two months ago the board of the club wrote to each of its 5100 members explaining that the club was in financial trouble and asked them to each pay a $100 donation to help it pay its bills, including $206,500 to IRD.

Only 500 members have paid the donation and the club’s bank has requested a report into its financial status. The report was enough for ANZ to back the club but only until the end of February when it will review the club’s situation again. Club chairman Ross Strawbridge says the situation is perilous. “We cannot make this any plainer. It is imperative that if you want the club to survive then you must consider

making a donation now.” One club member donated $128,000 but the club needed another $200,000 to be able to return to “normal trading”. Only $60,000 has been collected from donations though, leaving a $140,000 gap. “With 500 members making a contribution, 4500 of you have been either unwilling or unable to assist us.” He says the club’s financial problems were

because the board wasn’t made fully aware of certain bills for eight months with the information missing from the monthly management reports and creditors payable schedules. “Our real position came to light after the end of our financial year and following the board meeting on August 19.” Ross says the club is desperate for more members to stump up with a donation.

Massive turn out for model expo The organisers of the Nelson Model and Hobby Expo say this year’s event exceeded all expectations with more than 1000 people through the doors. In fact it was so popular, Bruce Jury says more people had been through the Stoke Memorial hall in the first hours on day one than at the entire show last year. “We were more than rapt. We had well in excess of 1000 people through the door,” says Bruce. “We were really happy with the variety of the displays too and that’s what people told us. Quite often you’d have granddad and grandson through, but this time grandma and all the

grandkids were there too.” The Nelson Model and Hobby Expo was put on by a group of 20 like minded hobby enthusiasts from here, Blenheim and Christchurch. There were more than 1000 items on display ranging from motorsport models, Star Wars collectibles, Meccano, trucks and plans, and earthmoving machinery to decorated eggs. The theme for this year was Kiwis in Motorsport and there was a special tribute to the late Jason Richards – Nelson’s most iconic driver. The money raised from the Nelson Model and Hobby Expo will go towards the Jason Richards Foundation.

Still going strong 50 years on A local couple's 50th wedding anniversary was a reunion in more ways than one on Saturday. In keeping with the usual celebrations, family and friends gathered from all over the country, and some from as a far afield as Australia, to see Bruce and Margaret Keelty celebrate their fifty year long commitment. But what made this one all the more special was that the flower girl and pageboy from their wedding ceremony all those years ago were able to attend. Wayne Bromell was just five years old when he presented the ring at Bruce and Margaret's wedding and Valerie Cale was four years old when she walked up the aisle as flower girl. Margaret remembers the duo reluctantly holding hands for the proceedings and says Valerie turned to her mother halfway through and whispered “do I have to hold his hand all day?” “It's quite lovely to have them here to celebrate with us again.” The special moments didn't stop there for Margaret, who after 24 years was reunited with her six brothers and sisters, who haven't been all together for 24 years.

As for their 50 year marriage, Bruce puts it down to the couple being best friends. “We have been the best of friends. We do everything together, well apart from when I play golf. We communicate really well too. That's the secret really.” Highlights over their years of marital bliss have been a Mediterranean cruise, which the self confessed “Mr and Mrs Ordinary” admit they were completely blown away by. “Our friends have been such a huge support to us too, we seem to have accumulated a great bunch over the years.”

Minis roar into Nelson

A big get-together for the world’s most recognizable small car was held over the weekend with more than 100 Mini owners taking to the streets of Nelson for a national event. Mini Nationals, hosted this year by Minis in Nelson, is basically the biggest get-together for the owners and their cars. It’s held every Labour Day, and this year it happened to come to Nelson. Lance Adams, who is president of the Minis in Nelson club, described the event as “just a good get-together”. “There would be over 200 people here. We have 100 cars registered and there are couples and kids,” Lance says. “It’s just a good social thing to catch up with people who are crazy about Minis. We’ve got cars from 1959 right up to 2012.

A lot more people seem to have the classics.” When asked why he was crazy about them, Lance, who owns a ’72 Mini, says “they’re cool” and they’re “a unique little car”. “I only got one six years ago but I’ve been hooked since. It’s easy to use, easy to drive. I don’t think I’ll be in any hurry to get rid of mine.” He believed it was a big coup for Nelson to host the nationals as it hadn’t been in the South Island for at least eight years. The schedule for Mini Nationals included a social at the World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum, a hill climb up the old Whangamoa road, a trial across the district answering questions along the way, and a prize-giving on Sunday night.

Police report

AB FRENZY: Anya Schultz, 12, meets All Blacks Beauden Barrett and Tawera Kerr-Barlow at the Richmond Mall on Friday. Four All Blacks; Wyatt Crockett, Beauden, Brodie Retalick and Tawera arrived as part of their annual “All Blacks to the Nation” trip to different parts of New Zealand. While in town, the quartet met children at Broadgreen Intermediate School, made a public appearance at the Richmond Mall, visited Nelson Hospital and Nelson Airport. Beauden was a fan favourite and was asked by one Garin College student “why do all the ladies love you?” Wyatt, a former Nelson College first XV player, declared it was “good to be home”, to the delight of the hundreds of fans that turned up. As the days get longer and the lawns are starting to require constant attention, some in our community are focussing their green fingered efforts on growing a different type of grass. Yes, it’s cannabis planting season and every year we ask people to keep an eye out for growers heading out to set up their patch. If you’re out enjoying the great outdoors and you come across something that seems a bit fishy get as much detail as you can, such as descriptions of the people and car registration. The more we can disrupt these operations before the plants get established, the less likely the drugs will make it to market. For people in rural areas the presence of cannabis growers is more often than not associated with other crime in their neighbourhood, such as theft from farm sheds. These are not people you want frequenting your neighbourhood and we are asking people to generally take more notice about who comes and goes. Across the country indoor growing operations are becoming more prevalent, however in Nelson Bays the majority of cannabis is still grown outdoors. Deerstalkers, pig-hunters, trampers, people taking part in outdoor recreation, and people working in the rural and aviation industries can all be excellent eyes and ears for police. Cannabis plots won’t necessarily be large. Growers now tend to plant in smaller groups of 10 to 15 in the hope they go unnoticed, with other small groups of plants inevitably close by. We are asking the public to report any suspicious activity including: People seen repeatedly going to certain locations, people seen at odd times, people somewhere they are not supposed to be, shovels, spades and other such equipment being carried into the bush, vehicles in rural areas closed to the public or with difficult access, unusual lights in rural areas at night, items going missing from rural properties that might be used in accessing plots and cultivation such as farm bikes and fencing equipment. Even when cannabis is being grown inside buildings there are tell-tale signs for the public and landlords to look out for such as: Residents increasing fence heights, curtains closed day and night, shed and garage windows being blocked out, bright lights on constantly or at strange times, sounds of fans continually running, vehicles and people visiting hours at all hours of the days, distinctive smell coming from rural areas or properties. If you see something suspicious or have information about drug cultivation, manufacture or supply ring your local Police Station. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Nelson's classic sails going to the world

Andrew Board

A Nelson sail maker is leading the way in the classic yacht scene and has been invited to one of the world’s premier classic yachting regattas in Melbourne. Bud Nalder is a third generation Nelson sail maker and one of only two in New Zealand who make sails for classic yachts. It's a booming industry that has seen him fly all over the world fitting his sails on multi-million dollar yachts. This month he will fly to Australia for the Melbourne Classic, a yacht race featuring around two dozen immaculately restored classic yachts, some using his sails. He says it’s an honour to be invited, but that kind of regatta isn’t new for Bud. He’s raced in Europe for the past five years on some of the world’s richest people’s yachts and in places like Monaco, Cannes, St Tropez and Nice. He says seeing one of his sails on a classic yacht is a “huge buzz”. “A favourite musician of mine, especially when he’s playing the piano, is Elton John and he plays a Yamaha. Now if I was Mr Yamaha sitting in a concert and listening to him play that piano like that I would feel pretty chuffed and I feel the same way when I see one

Nelson classic sail maker Bud Nalder at his sewing machine in Nelson. Photo: Andrew Board. of my sails on a classic yacht.” Restoring classic yachts is an industry that has seen Bud’s workload shift dramatically. Ten years ago he says making sails for classic yachts was about 15 per cent of his business. Now it’s more than 50 per cent and its growing popularity in the southern hemisphere means he doesn’t have to travel the world as much for the work. “In Europe it’s huge, people

would rather be on a classic than on one of those big white fridges they call super yachts. It’s very popular but very expensive but more and more it’s become a big thing in this part of the world and this regatta in Melbourne will be one of the bigger ones around.” Bud has been sought out from yacht owners around the world because of his unique skills in making sails similar to those made 100 years ago, the same

period many of the classic yachts were built. He says he has his father to thank for that. “I’ve been doing this since 1967 so when I started my apprenticeship with my father it was all classic sails. Those techniques went away so people who have learnt the trade over the past few decades haven’t learned those skills.” It leaves him perfectly placed to pick up a lot of the classic sail making work but Bud admits it’s

hardly great for business. “It’s a niche market and a lot of other sail makers don’t want to know the number of hours that go into them, they want to make sails for money and get them out the door,” he says. “With classic sails you have to have a passion for it. If you haven’t got a passion for it you wouldn’t go near it because it doesn’t pay like modern sails and you can’t charge full whack for the amount of time you spend on them. It’s a labour of love.” But he says the labour of love is worth it when he sees a classic yacht “dripping with varnish and polished brass” with his sails on it. “It’s an honour to be able to work on some of these yachts. They’re pieces of furniture, it’s like sailing a Steinway piano.” Bud is also contracted to look after all the sails for the yachts owned by the Auckland Maritime Museum and the fleet of 11 owned by the Classic Yacht Trust. All up he does about 80 per cent of the classic sail making in New Zealand as well as some in Australia and he says there’s plenty of more work lined up. Bud leaves for the regatta next week before travelling to Brisbane to fit some of his sails on another classic yacht.

Cake decorators host national event It takes a steady hand to produce a one-of-a-kind cake that is too good to eat, but that is exactly what you’ll find if you head down to the Rutherford Hotel this weekend. Hundreds of New Zealand’s best cake decorators and sugar artists are currently putting the cherry on top or doing last minute piping ahead of the annual event, to be hosted here

for the first time in 14 years. As members of the nationwide cake decorating guild, entrants to the conference will take part in demonstrations by local and national sugar artists, attend the organisation’s AGM and exhibit their best looking cakes to the public during two open entry events. This year’s conference flower to be incorporated into the

decorations is the Iceland Poppy. Nelson Cake Decorators & Sugar Artists will play host to the event, with all 23 of its members putting forward something to show at the event. The public are invited to view the cakes this Saturday between 10am and 4pm and this Sunday between 9am and 1pm. Entry is $3 per person.

Rolling with local truffle makers For ten years a group of local good sorts have been making, rolling and selling truffles for charity and the group’s founder says after ten years she's still as thrilled as ever to see it come together. Anne Bolton started the idea making truffles and selling them for orphans in eastern Europe in the Brightwater Church Hall. After five years she and her husband Peter visited Moldova – Eu-

rope’s poorest country – to see what the money is used for. She came back energised and says as this year is the tenth anniversary of the fundraiser she’s keen to go back. “When we started I had been reading some Mission Without Borders articles about abandoned and orphaned children – what got me was that they had no one that specifically loved them, they were no one’s priority, they were seen as

lower class and of course the horror stories of what happened to many of them. I imagined how I would feel if it were my own children in that situation. The final straw was an article about an intermediate aged boy called Nicolai who was asked what he would like to be when he was older, and he said 'I want to be a real person'.” Anne doesn’t do much of the organising these days, it’s left to even more kindhearted folk who form the committee that organises the fundraiser. This year the truffles are being sold through local churches, work places and through local milkie Trevor Nicholls. Each year around $10,000 to raised for the charity and Anne says they need more volunteers to help roll the truffles this year. “We can always use more volunteers, it’s always a great day and it’s very social.” If you’re interested in helping roll some truffles the “rolling” is on Friday, November 8 from 9am to 9pm and on Saturday from 9am until they’re finished. People are welcome to help for as long or as little time as they have and truffles can be bought on the day or through www. truffles.org.nz.

In the last 3 years Caci has treated over 10,000 people with Botox®, and every treatment is performed by trained Registered Cosmetic Nurses. Here are answers to questions you may have about Botox® and Dermal Fillers:

Can you get a natural look with Dermal Fillers and Botox®? At Caci, they pride themselves on giving their clients the most natural results possible. In fact most clients say that their friends and family comment on how great they look, but cannot pin point that they have had any treatment. Is it affordable? One of the main reasons clients don’t have appearance medicine treatments is the perceived cost involved. The cost varies with treatment. Caci offer Amerase™ treatment plans to make it easy for people to manage. These annual plans at Caci start from as little as $30 per week.

What is the difference between Botox® and Dermal Fillers? Botox® is used to relax specific facial muscles, softening facial expression lines, however dermal fillers are used to restore facial volume. Cook book reaction blows mall manager away The manager of Richmond Mall says she is "blown away" by the response to its recipe book. Belinda de Clercq says she's had customers stop her in the mall to say how much they've enjoyed it and she's had dozens of requests for more copies. "It's been really great, I'm so happy with how people have reacted to it and sup-

ported it." The cook book was to help celebrate 40 years of Richmond Mall and was delivered free to 30,000 homes in Nelson and Tasman. It featured recipes sent in from locals in various sections. There was glaring error in the book though with a Kiwi Black Forest Cheesecake print-

ed with the wrong ingredients. Belinda says it was unfortunate but the right recipe has been printed below and people can cut it out and stick it over the original one printed in the cook book. "It was a mistake and we apologise for that but we are trying to put it right by putting the right recipe in the Weekly so people can still enjoy it."

Despite the error the cook book had been a huge success, she says. A thousand extra copies of the cook book were printed for the mall so people could pick up extra copies to send to family and friends outside the region. Belinda says the idea of a cook book was fantastic and she's is thrilled that local people thought so too.

Spotlight on current projects: ASB Bank Seismic Strengthening - One of the latest projects to be undertaken by IMB is the strengthening on the ASB building on Trafalgar and Hardy St. The Project has already seen foundation anchors driven 10 metres into the ground and other steel beams added to reinforce existing walls in a major upgrade to make it earthquake safe. The building is one of the latest to undergo earthquake strengthening in the city and IMB were pleased to be asked to take on the project. ASB aren’t expected to be back in the building until the New Year with the bank giving the building a complete fit out once the work is finished. The earthquake strengthening will be seen from the street once the safety boards are pulled down. While big steel beams will be visible from inside and outside the building once the project is completed, people will know it’s safe just by looking at it.

your workplace and home for a clean, hygienic and pest free summer this spring. Pest control is best sorted now, before it becomes an even bigger problem further into the season. Springtime is an effective pre-emptive time for pest control management for flies, fleas, ants and spiders. Early preventative spraying for spiders and flies is the most effective means of preventing a problem developing later in the season. As the ambient temperatures increase new life cycles start and insect pests become more active and visible, so what seemed a minor infestation over the cooler months may turn into a full scale nuisance or health risk. Rex Kelly setting up the course for the Stihl King of the Forest competition to be held at the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum at Higgins Park on Saturday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Lining up to be King of the Forest There's going to be a lot more than just $4500 in prizemoney on the line at this weekend's Stihl New Zealand King of the Forest competition at the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum at Higgins Park near Wakefield. The pride of the region's forestry workers will also be at stake after they were shown up by a team of roading contractors from Fulton Hogan in last year's King of the Forest. Fulton Hogan proved too good in the competition that involved teams of four completing a series of tests including wire rope splicing, chainsawing and log splitting. Fulton Hogan's Stu Heath, Tony Heslop, Matt Riordan and Andy Allen will be back to defend their title this Saturday but organiser Rex Kelly says the professional logging crews will be out to set the record straight. “Stu is going to be back with the same guys as last year but the loggings guys have been talking about it amongst themselves and they don't want to let them win again,” he says. But first Rex says the logging teams will need to tidy up their act. Last year the logging teams showed plenty of speed only to be hit hard by time penalties for not completing the tasks up to standard. “They know they have to do it exactly right. We've increased the penalties this year so it will be even more critical.” The winning team will receive $2400 of equipment from Stihl New Zealand with second-place receiving $600 from Richmond Equipment. As well as prizemoney and pride,

Simon Bloomberg Senior reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

there will also be family bragging rights at stake this Saturday. Stu will be competing against his brother-in-law Nigel Kelly who will be lining up in one of the Kelly Logging teams. Rex, who is Nigel's father and Stu's father-in-law, says the Stihl Logging weekend also features a number of other attractions including a wire rope splicing competition with $1500 prizemoney sponsored by Bowater Toyota, demonstrations of the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum's sawmill and wood chopping contests. On Sunday there will be tree felling demonstrations, traction engine and horse rides and a chance for children to find treasure buried in sand using a digger. Rex says a restored mobile log hauler that was used for training forestry workers in the Golden Downs woodsman School in the 1950s and 1960s will also be on display. The Logger's Dream machine was one of six that was imported to New Zealand from the US and was “rescued” from a property in the Marlborough Sounds earlier this year. “I remember seeing it operating in Golden Downs in the 1960s,” Rex says. “She's a dear old soul and Mike Edridge and his staff have done a lot of work restoring it so it will be good to see her up and running again.” The Logging Weekend runs from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

• “In the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to love,” true. And I think the “spring thing” has already begun. But every young man, middleaged man and extra-mature man should be very aware of the power of fragrance in association to romance. Now let me explain how I think of Romance. It has little to do with sex. Well not to begin with. That may [or may not] come at a later stage. “The way to a man’s heart is via his stomach,” true. “ONE of the ways to a woman’s heart is via fragrance,” and a sensible, sensitive man will take note and remember this. • Fragrance to a woman has a powerful reaction. It may bring back memories. It may create hope. It may simply give her great pleasure. I knew a farmer once, who sometimes would pick a rose as he passed through the garden on his way to lunch. He would present it to his wife a little bit casually, and she would MELT. Now this man knew a few things. • He didn’t do this every day. No. No. Just sometimes. But he was always assured of a special meal [to his liking] that evening! Clever, that! • There are so many plants that you can add to your garden that will have an alluring effect, and help create a feeling of mystery. The lure of fragrance will create the urge to seek that plant out. An intimate relationship is established and leads the visitor deeper into the garden. This creates a feeling of allurement, which can be quite magical, and adds to the enjoyment of the garden. • So if you are planning a fragrant garden, we won’t mention violets. We all know of their fra-

grance. But do you know about monardas? They could be tossed into the herb category, along with “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.” Planted near a pathway, a leaf could be plucked and crushed giving a wonderful herby fragrance. • We all know about the lilacs [syringas] flowering now. But they can be expensive to buy because they are grafted. However, do you know about the bush varieties? There are several available now that take up little space and don’t break the bank as well. The fragrance will make you want to bury your nose in the blossoms. Hydrangeas are lovely after a rain. Not “heady” or sweet. Just beautifully “clean.” • Sweet peas are known to us all. Every year I make sure to have one growing beside the window where I have lunch most days. I wouldn’t be without it! And a courtyard with citrus in the flowering season would be out of this world! • Do you know of the chocolate cosmos. I won’t mention its botanical name. Far too hard to spell let alone pronounce! Lovely, simple deepest red flowers really do emit the fragrance of hot chocolate. Then there is lily of the valley, dianthus which is a MUST for a Tussie Mussie, and migionete and alyssum in the annual garden. • On a mild summer evening, Peter and I sit on our veranda and sip a glass of wine each. Roses climb up the veranda posts, and oriental lilies are planted nearby. That is a WOW for fragrance in the soft evening. And as for romance? Not too bad for a couple who have reached their “three score years and ten”.

Population increase for Nelson: As long as the powers to be can think outside of the box, as they say. Bring our infrastructure up to speed, start supplying more services (that would include good local postal), regular bus service between towns including Motueka.

They have probably counted us in with Christchurch where our mail is to be sorted. Carol Stewart. As long as they are all not over 65. Bonita Wilkinson No way. Our roads and infrastructure cannot support our present population. Once the infrastructure is there then growth will be good! Lee M Griff. What about the houses in Main Rd Stoke which still aren't connected to stormwater. Our house is over 30 years old and there have been over 50 houses built since then that aren't connected. This is a residential area, and then it floods because there's no where for water to go. I don't think NCC has infrastructure to cope. Jay Park. It is good news, however I can only hope that we can cater for this growth, there are not enough jobs for Nelsonians to start with, the teens have nothing to do here and the traffic is bad enough now with the existing routes in and out, also services such as stormwater, sewage, sewerage will be a problem. Brenda Kenny. Change to child restraint law: And yet, they can go on school buses that don't even have a normal seatbelt. Dez Tinee.

Yes of course keeping our kids as safe as can be is a good idea. But like above I do worry about bus trips. How on earth can that possibly be safe?? Lauren Saunders. Teach people to drive so everyone in the car is safe. More expense for parents to come up with just so they can cart there kids around. Mathew Ayloff. Fab idea. Keeping my kids safe is the most paramount thing in my car. Even other kids go in my spare. My son is tall and he is 7.5 but will remain in a booster as long as possible. His neck is still probably not strong enough to not sustain injury in case of an accident. Booster and carseat's save lives. We are one of the only countries in the world who are behind the 8 ball on this issue. England changed it's laws about 5 years ago and even Aussie have changes. In Sweden kids rear face till like 7 because it is safest. We need to remember its actually about the kids and that's all that matters. Bridget Hobden. It seems a good idea at face value but when you look into it it seems more like a money-making scheme with the car seat manufacturers. Don't get me wrong, child safety is absolutely the most important thing but the numbers of 5-7 year old injuries and deaths are incredibly small and the children most at risk's parents will probably ignore this new law anyway. James Burke.

have happened under his watch, but Hugh and others cannot turn a blind eye to those things that should not have happened and I don't need to list them. So let’s get on with 2013 and give our new mayor every support in reuniting the council team (all 13 of them), having open dialogue with the community and explain to Hugh what the changes to the local government act really mean when it comes to “core business”. That might mean the slush fund for the arts might dry up a bit. Errol Millar.

15 October solutions

No more arts "slush fund": I hope Hugh Neill’s letter (Oct 15) is not the start of another orchestrated campaign of letters from the Arts/ Miccio fraternity crying “foul” that Aldo was unfairly voted out on Saturday. From what I have heard over recent weeks Nelson had been “Miccio’d” out and everyone was sick of reading about the wonderful things he has done. I too congratulate Aldo for some of the positive things that

Top local cyclists get amongst cycle festival Competitive cyclists had another chance to be involved in the Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival, lapping the Central Rd Circuit in Upper Moutere on Saturday. The event was put on by Tasman Wheelers and featured competition regulars across five different classes, with A and B Grade riders completing five laps for a total of 90 kilometres through the Moutere Valley. Young rider Sean Hambrook, who has just returned from racing overseas, was the overall winner in the A Grade and was followed across the hill top finish

line by Brad Tilby and Robin Reid. Richie Howes, Jay Blazek and Kyle Ralfe made up the podium for the B Grade riders with Mark Jaine taking out the 72km C Grade race ahead of Scott Ingram and Jon Linyard. This was Mark’s first race back from a shoulder injury. Neil Riley was first place in the 54km D Grade race while Marty Campbell was the victor in the 36km E Grade event. The next race on the Cycle Festival calendar is tonight’s Tasman Wheelers Tuesday Evening Blast from 6:15pm in Richmond. For full event details visit www.nelsoncyclefest.co.nz

ITM Cup TIppIng Our locals pick their winners

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Shane Christie couldn't bear to watch as Ihaia West lined up his 80th minute conversion. Had the kick gone over, Hawke's Bay would have snatched the ITM Cup Championship in the most dramatic fashion. With thousands of East Stand spectators shouting in the hope it would put him off, Ihaia's potential match winner had gone wayward. The Tasman Makos had done it. It wasn't the prettiest of victories, but it was the most important. And while his team-mates jumped around in celebration, the Tasman captain quietly walked back to halfway. When asked what the result meant to him, Shane said "everything mate" but still appeared like the win had yet to sink in. Looking at the statistics, the game should have been won by Hawke's Bay. But Tasman were clinical when they needed to be, and even though the halftime lead of 23-10 was closed up to 26-25. Shane says "it just wouldn't have been right" if the Magpies had stolen the victory at the death. "I never doubted that we would win but I didn't think it would be that close," he says. "This is a pretty proud moment for me and my family. It's a privilege to be the captain of this team and I just want to do the best I can." Having played in front of two mediocre crowds in Blenheim over the past

"The community got right behind us and we are lucky we came away with it." Tom Marshall echoed his captain's comments and says it was great winning in front of a large Nelson crowd. "When you're winning people come and support you and I really hope that continues onto next year. We'll be playing bigger teams [in the Premiership] and everybody loves to watch the stars." Playing in the Premiership will be a tough task for Tasman, who until this season has been an underperforming side across all ITM Cup formats. But with wins over Counties Manu-

kau, Waikato and Taranaki this season, there's no reason why the success won't carry over next year. "It's going to be tougher but it'll be good. We'll get better support, everyone loves watching Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland, so it'll be great for the region. If we can retain our players we will have no problem competing against and beating those teams." While Tasman was at the top of the most important aspect of the season, one of the team's star performers also scored some individual accolades too. Marty Banks, who ended Friday with a 16 point haul, was overall joint top point scorer with Otago's Hayden Parker. Both players had 170 points, one ahead of Ihaia.

Golf festival 'a hit' A new golf tournament which was played on three different courses across the region has been labelled a success by its director. The Festival of Golf, which saw more than 100 competitors from outside Nelson compete with a large selection of locals, was held at Nelson Golf Club, Greenacres Golf Club and Motueka Golf Club last week. The concept came about due to Nelson’s lack of a major golf tournament, the need to bring out of town players here, and it was the perfect opportunity to showcase the three 18 hole courses in the region. Points were taken from four rounds of golf, with the Nelson Golf Club being used twice. Tournament director Derek Drysdale says The Festival of Golf was the only tournament which was played on multiple greens. “It showcased the quality and the variety. All three golf courses have got different features, so they’re not playing the same thing all the time. They’ve all enjoyed that,” he

says. “The nine hole courses in the area are very good but we just felt like the 18 hole courses are what the competitors were after.” Derek says the plan was for the golfers to spend five days in the region, checking out the sites, including the Nelson Arts Festival. “Some of them went to Golden Bay, some went to Brightwater and Wakefield, some had done the cycle trail,” he says. “They’ve all used the local activities and they went to the arts festival. We called it the Festival of Golf to tie in with that actually. We thought it was a good mix and people have enjoyed both.” The prize value was approximately $15,000 and was courtesy of major sponsors Nelson City Council, Bowater Motor Group, Jennian Homes, Waimea Estate Wines and Taylor Made Golf. “They’ve all been involved in the funding of the tournament and Bowaters put up multiple cars to be won if someone hit a hole in one.”

50 years for Nelson Squash Club Nelson Squash Club will celebrate a milestone this weekend, marking 50 years since the club's formation in the city. Founding member and first ever vice president for the club Philip Coote says it was kick started by a steering group in 1962 and has come a long way since its first days. “One of our friends had played before and was always telling us how good he was, so we thought we’d better test him and build some courts. We had a public meeting and there was a bit of enthusiasm and a steering group was formed from there.”

Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Once given the go ahead, the courts and club house cost around five thousand pounds to complete, with three thousand of that coming from the Nelson City Council. The rest was either raised by the club or loaned and they received some funding from the New Zealand Squash Rackets Association. “Once we got it going it pretty much ran itself.” Life member Sylvia Wesney,

who's been with the club for 49 years, says while there's been a few changes to the game, the only major changes have been the extension from two courts to six and the 1000 strong membership of the 80s that is now at around 80 playing members. “The highlight was the extension of the courts. The rackets have doubled in size, trebled in size and the game is a lot faster.” To celebrate the longevity of Nelson Squash Club current, life and past members are invited to an afternoon of socialising this Saturday at 4.30pm at the club facilities.

Nine year old off to motorcross nationals Phillip Rollo

Luca Palmer-Donaldson will have to wait another seven years before he can legally ride a motorcycle on the road – but that’s alright, he’s too busy riding on the dirt anyway. The Brightwater School student is nine years old and amazingly rode his first motocross bike when he was just three – a Suzuki JR50. This weekend he’s off to race at the national championship on the North Shore where he will be competing in the 9-11 year old 65cc class against 80 of the best riders his age. “We’re aiming for top three but it’ll be pretty tough,” his father Shane Donaldson says. “Those kids ride it all the time. We’ve never even seen the track. He’ll be coming up against kids who are nearly 12 too.” Only 40 of the riders will qualify through to the final where the format then includes a best of five series. “It’s all over five races and it’s all on points.” Last year Luca and his twin brother Nico both attended the event. Luca was second in the 7-8 year old class and Nico won the 6-8 year old class. While they look identical, their demeanor on the track is much different. Older brother Jake, 16, described Nico as a “cruisy” competitor, who wasn’t too bothered about taking a spectator role this year and hadn’t trained as much. Luca, on the other hand, is super competitive and spends hours practicing. “Luca hates being beaten. He’s got the killer instinct. If someone overtakes him he grits his teeth and gets them back.” If he’s staying in accommodation at one of the tracks Luca doesn’t feel the

But otherwise he’s often throwing up on the way there. “We call it the motocross bug. We’ll be driving down the road and he’ll be hanging out the window vomiting everywhere,” says Shane. Luca says the pressure of racing and his fear of crashing is behind the anxiety. But the pressure certainly isn’t coming from the family and Shane says the boys all grew up on motorbikes and spend hours riding on the track at their Waimea-West property. “They can drive anything,” he says, after one of the twins helped reverse the family 4WD on their

Waimea-West property. “They took to motocross like a duck to water. But if they said tomorrow that they didn’t want to ride then I wouldn’t cry about it. We all do it because we love it. It’s good fun.” While it’s good fun, it’s also a very expensive sport and Luca’s appearance at nationals has been helped from sponsors Donaldson Landscape and Earthwork, Nelson Motorcyle Centre, Fresh Choice Richmond, Emerson Mytton Builders, Pomeroys Tea and Coffee Company, Hydraulink, Endurance Logging and Donaldson Civil.

diary

• Port Nelson enjoyed the usual traffic last week including two log ships, the Oluf Maersk a 238m long container ship, and a car carrier. • The lunacy has begun on the water it seems as the Harbour patrol reports people on the water without lifejackets, paddleboarders caught out by strong tides, kayakers out in 40 to 50knot gusting winds. • I don’t think I should repeat my response when asked what should we do in these conditions if they get into trouble. They were already in trouble and shouldn’t have been out in conditions that were forecast. Perhaps there is the point. Maybe there are many that don’t know how to obtain a forecast or that don’t know Jim’s land forecasts are very different to the marine environment. • Now casting, a continuous marine update forecast can be heard on VHF Channel 22. Ask your boat club. They should be posting the forecast every day. Check with a local for advice if you haven’t been here before. • Please do not endanger the HM staff, the Coastguard or the Police through sheer stupidity. Boat safely this summer, If in doubt – don’t go out.
