Bridge St is getting a new lease on life as the notoriously tired part of town gets invigorated with fresh offices, cafes, bars and entertainment venues. The Provincial Tavern building,

Weekend after a refurbishment. The new Little Rock will open next April after the present lease runs out. The Verdict shut down last year, but the building was bought by design agency Hothouse, and has been given a modern facelift after extensive renovations. “The great thing is that we are in the middle of town,” says Hothouse director Allan InnesWalker. “It should be a really nice, meaningful location.” He says the building is rich with history and he wanted to keep some of those stories alive in it. He also wanted to show that investing in the centre of the city was important. “Those who can buy property should add value. It’s a beautiful part of town. It is worth it.” At the front of the establishment

Emily Cogin and Kate Manley in the new cafe, Jaks Island, which has just opened on Bridge St. Photo: Charles Anderson. is a new express cafe called “Jaks Island”. Ali Slotemaker and ex Cod & Lobster chefs Jessie Verhoef and Kate Manley are the brains behind cafe which does quick, healthy takeaway food and coffee. Ali says after nine years working by herself she wanted to collaborate again. The three are working

as a cooperative. However, those expecting a traditional sit-down cafe will be disappointed. “Nelson has enough of those,” says Ali. “This is more a city, corporate idea where you can get a coffee and something to eat and take away.” Kate says it is a dream to be able to serve high quality, quick food to customers. “It’s amazing, I

never thought I’d be able to do it but then this opportunity came up.” The developments come on the back of a new artists’ collective opening up on Bridge St, along with an 80-seat theatre called Ghost Light Theatre, which has just been granted $16,500 from the Nelson City Council to get started. Across the road, the building which used to house Drifters is being converted into a jazz bar. Laura Irish, director of Ghost Light Theatre, says it’s great to see Bridge St getting some of the attention it deserves. The theatre had been host to more than a dozen shows since it opened, with new bookings coming in from across the country and the Tasman. “It shows there is a demand out there,” Laura says. “Things are certainly happening on Bridge St.”

The neighbour of a Stoke subdivision is concerned over the lack of communication and traffic problems he believes the development will create. Exeter Estates is created by Home Living Solutions - a syndicate of developers who have bought up land around Nelson to offer packages to aspiring buyers. Exeter Estates is under development at the end of Exeter St with part of it backing onto Nayland College grounds. It is marketed as an opportunity for everyone “offering a range of sections to suit every lifestyle and age”. However, Malcolm Ross, who lives over the other side of the

homes have already been sold with the first stage due for completion in February. “The implications on traffic at the Nayland/Exeter intersection will be dire, especially during school terms; it is already bad enough, but the extra traffic will make it impossible.” Nelson City Council’s group manager of strategy and environment, Clare Barton, says the traffic implications of the subdivision were assessed in the resource consent process. “It was deemed that the existing road and intersection are of sufficient design standard to cater for the additional traffic.” Jo Taylor from Home Living Solutions says it’s disappointing that the neighbour did not contact them directly to raise his concerns.

school grounds, says he was surprised to see trees and flaxes being ripped up for the development when no one had told him or his neighbours what was going on. “In Auckland neighbours picket and protest when trees are threatened, here they are being felled/removed with no communication or indication as to the scope of the project.” Malcolm says the people on Exeter St have likely had updates. “But we haven’t and we have a prime view of it. We have been here about 20 years and it’s been pretty placid up until now.” Malcolm says more of a concern will be the traffic caused by the 50-home development. About three-quarters of the

Riverside location for Farmers Market NEWS Kate Russell

A new location, new hours and new stalls are on the horizon for the Nelson Farmers Market. After eight years in Morrison Square, the popular Wednesday fixture will be saying goodbye to the old location tomorrow and setting up shop along the Maitai Boulevard next week. The newly-named area is the pathway that runs from opposite Paru Paru Rd down to the Maitai footbridge. The market has been on the hunt for a new site since July, after receiving an eviction notice from Morrison Square by landlord the Accident Compensation Corporation. Buxton Square was thrown out there as an option, but was turned down by Nelson City Council who offered the riverside location as an alternative. Market manager Miriam Clark says, although the new location is not as central as Morrison Square, it will be a more “family-friendly” environment with some exciting additions. Instead of the usual 10:30am – 3:30pm hours, the market will now open at 8am and finish at 2pm, with a “bigger variety of stalls” including more food stalls

Tourism spend up Tourist spending by international and domestic visitors has increased in Nelson, according to the latest monthly regional tourism estimates released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment last week. The figures show that visitor spending for Nelson is estimated to be $345 million for the year to August 2017, up four per cent compared with the previous year.

Photo: Kate Russell. serving up breakfast, brunch and lunch. Miriam says the market will also “have the room to grow and develop free from the previous constraints of space and trade” of Morrison Square. “There were restrictions with the types of stalls we could allow, and with our new hours people will be able to come and do their shopping on their way to work.” She also says that parking was

always a “bone of contention” right in town. “There wasn’t enough parking for both customers and stall holders, but the new location is a far more welcoming environment - it ticks all the boxes.” Miriam says they are of the attitude “that they will lose some and they will gain some” in terms of customers, but she hopes that people will stroll down in their lunch breaks and enjoy what the new site has to offer.

“It has taken such a long time to get to this point but we’re ready to move on to the next phase. There’s a lot of potential here,” she says. The Nelson Farmers Market will be up and running from its new location from 11 October with an official opening including a bouncy castle and activities for kids. Tomorrow’s market will be running in Morrison Square as usual.

Library marks 175 years Council, staff, and patrons gathered at the Elma Turner Library last Wednesday to celebrate the Nelson Public Library’s 175th anniversary. Starting out as the Nelson Institute Library in 1842 on Upper Trafalgar St, it is one of the oldest library institutions in the country. Airport celebrates report Nelson Airport is celebrating a strong performance following the release of their annual report which showed a 71 per cent earnings growth, with a net profit of $3.1 million for the 2016/2017 year. Board chairman Paul Steere says the airport is “extremely proud” of the results, with the introduction of new routes and extra flights from new airlines delivering a strong operating environment towards the airport’s commercial activities.

Restorer throws out antique chair Charles Anderson Journalist

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Sandy Boyd was getting rid of everything in her life that she didn’t need. She was downsizing - selling or giving away all the things that cluttered up her life. She and her partner Dwayne were busy restoring his old house truck and converting it into a tiny house. The truck was built over 30 years while Dwayne was a house remover. It used to sit on a 1975 Bedford truck but it has been removed and slotted onto a trailer on a something?’,” pocket of land Sandy said. in Tasman. ever, was one that she found 17 years ago at an antique store in Motueka. “If I was going to have one piece of furniture then this was going to be it,” she says. “It’s built for a small environment, it’s compact, it’s light.” But it also needed some work. So Sandy took it to a restorer who agreed to reupholster it. He told them it would take several weeks. The time came around

and Dwayne dropped in to see how it was going. But the chair was nowhere to be found. “I call it a major clerical malfunction,” says Dwayne. The restorer had confused it with another chair, thought Sandy didn’t want to do the extra work and so got rid of it. “The fella has obviously made a mistake but it’s something that shouldn’t happen,” Dwayne says.

It turned out he had dropped it at a recycling centre. So they went round to the recycling centre, auction houses and antique stores searching for the distinctive piece of furniture. “But no one could remember seeing it.” So now the couple are well on their way to finishing the tiny house but they are still missing that one special piece. “We just want to track it down,” Sandy said. “We want to finish the job.” Dwayne said if someone had taken it on as a project then that was one thing. “Better that than being hiffed in a hole.” But they hoped they could do a deal with whoever has it to get the chair back. “It would really complete our project,” Sandy says. They have put the call out on social media and, while they have had some nibbles, there has been no clear sign as to what happened to their chair. “It’s a bit of a mystery but we would love to see it back,” she says.

More join Nelson App Users of the Nelson App are getting more and more information at their fingertips after two more major Nelson organisations signed up this month. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and the Nelson Regional Development Agency are both now on the app giving users information about local health services and tourists information about our i-Site. They join Nelson City Council, Sport Tasman and Nelson Airport who, along with 250 local businesses, advertise on the app. NMDHB communications manager Stephanie Gray says it was a no-brainer

to join. “There are some really important health services that we’d like everyone in our region to know about, such as free dental care for children and teenagers, and free quit-smoking programmes. The Nelson App is a new, appealing way to reach people, alongside our usual advertising and promotion.” Managing Director of the Nelson App, Andrew Board, says 7000 Nelsonians now have the app downloaded on their phone. “We’re still getting daily messages from users or advertisers saying they have just downloaded it and love it.” He says more information is being added

every week including sporting events, free activities for kids and an up-to-theminute link to the latest power outages. “The app is always evolving and we’re also keen to hear from people about what they’d like in it, too. We want it to be for all Nelsonians.” He says the most popular section is the local news and sport. “We see a huge spike when there are big news stories, that’s often because we’re the first to break the story.” The Nelson App is free to download, just search for “The Nelson App” in the App Store or Google Play Store.

The rugby will be more family-friendly than ever this Sunday with Pic's Peanut Butter and the Nelson Aiport teaming up for a family fun zone and picnic. As the Tasman Makos will host Auckland at Trafalgar Park this Sunday afternoon, two local businesses got together to make it a day not to be missed. Tasman Rugby Union marketing manager Les Edwards says the day will be all about "family, rugby and sun." "And Pic's Peanut Butter is the perfect partner for a Pic's Picnic," he joked. Pic's marketing manager Nikki Neate says they will also be giving out ten special prize packs. "We've been a member of the 500 club and this coincided with our 10 year anniversary celebrations, so we thought 'what would be better than inviting Nelson to come and watch some great rugby, have some peanut butter and have an amazing family afternoon'." Nelson is red, Richmond blue Charles Anderson Journalist

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson’s red/blue divide has been laid out more starkly than ever thanks to new voting booth data. The Nelson Weekly has used data analysis from Chris McDowall to show how Nelsonians voted at the General Election, depending on the location of the polling booth they visited. Labour overwhelmingly dominated National in the party vote at various polling booths around Nelson. However, the further west you go, the bluer the statistics become. The analysis also shows the extent by which Labour made ground and National lost it in Nelson’s suburbs. Labour won the party vote in

Nelson with 15,030 votes, or 41.1 per cent, followed closely by National with 14,690 votes, according to preliminary results. The final numbers will not be known until Saturday. Labour received just 24.71 per cent of the party votes in 2014, well behind National on 44.43 per cent. Labour won by more than 50 per cent of the vote at the Victory Community Centre voting booth with 750 votes and at Nelson Intermediate with 220. National won by more than 50 per cent at Garin College with 402 votes and Brightwater School with 515 votes. Howe ve r, even at the voting booths

where National won, Labour still had big swings compared to the previous, 2014 general election. Nick Smith won the Nelson seat receiving 14,956 of the total votes, followed by Labour’s Rachel Boyack who ended up with 10,956 votes, and the Green Party’s Matt Lawrey, with 8324 votes. Voting booth data for

electorate votes will not be available until after Saturday, Oc tober 7.

Home & Garden Show launches new local businesses HOME AND GARDEN SHOW: Sisters, Lucy and Sophie Field check out the Tiny Teepees display with their mum Hayley at the Nelson Home & Garden Show on Saturday. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Brittany Spencer The Nelson Home & Garden Show was the perfect place for people wanting to spruce up their homes, but it was also the perfect launching site for new businesses and new products. Well over 9000 people strolled through over 180 stalls at Saxton Stadium from Friday to Sunday, soaking up ideas, inspiration and information. Event organiser Josh Shanley says the tenth Nelson Home & Garden Show was a massive success with a great atmosphere and even more visitors than last year. “Visitors who hadn’t been to the show for a couple of years said there was a lot more of a buzz on the weekend than they had remembered in previous years, so that’s a big positive for us.” The show has a mix of established national and international brands as well as local businesses. “A lot of our exhibitors tell us that, in terms of exposure for a new product or business, it’s a great way to get people engaged. “It’s a chance for consumers to talk to the people behind the product and try before they buy.” Amongst the stalls was budding business owner Becky Siame, who launched her sleepover party hire business at the show. “I’ve been working on it for about five months but this was my coming-out launch, it was great to be able to exhibit it in a place where so many people could see it and get excited about it.” Tiny Teepee provides themed teepees and party decor for Instagram-worthy sleepovers, they do the delivery, set-up, styling, pack-up and entertainment. “The whole gist of Tiny Teepee is that we go into people’s homes and turn ordinary places into enchanting spaces for children and their parties and the parents don’t have to do a thing.” Becky says the concept was quite unique within the show and Tiny Teepee got a fabulous response. “People were saying how great it looked and really made the effort to come up and say, ‘your stall is lovely, there’s so much to look at, and congratulations on a great concept’.” Becky says she’d recommend the show to any budding or well-established business. “It was the perfect place to launch and we’ll definitely be back next year, I really recommend the show to other businesses, it was a great event.”

CALENDARS FOR SPCA: Local photographer Doug Barry-Martin and SPCA Feline Manager Carmen Torrance hold up Barry’s 2018 calendar. With iconic Nelson and Tasman landscapes like the Boulder Bank Lighthouse, Rainbow Ski Area, and Golden Bay, Barry will be donating $3 from every calendar sale to the Nelson SPCA. The calendars are already in store at Paper Plus, Page & Blackmore and a few other outlets, and cost $21 each. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

They may look like toys but there’s a lot of skill that goes into radio-controlled sailing, as was evident at the South Island International One Metre regatta. Held over Saturday and Sunday at Thawley Orchard’s pond in Mahana and hosted by Radio Yacht Squadron Nelson, the competition included 30 boats from around the country. It’s the third time that the Nelson club has hosted the South Island regatta, however, after a great day of racing on Saturday, competitors were left waiting for the wind to pick up on Sunday with only a handful of races getting underway. “A lot of people think the boats have motors but they don’t, it’s all done by the wind, the only thing we can control is the rudder to steer it and the sails to the degree we want,” says organising committee chair, Ken

Allcott. The club belongs to the New Zealand Radio Yachting Association and is one of three clubs in the South Island, the other two being Canterbury and Otago, with six clubs operating in the North Island. Each year, each club is expected to run a regional regatta, open to everyone in New Zealand. On top of that there is the South Island and North Island champs, which are run on behalf of the New Zealand association, by different host clubs. “The cream of it all is the New Zealand National Champs which are on this weekend in Christchurch,” says Ken. “There you get international competitors as well, so there’s some Australians coming over for that and they’ll have 40 boats entered.” The weekend got underway with two seeding races, determining whether boats started in Fleet A and Fleet B. Each Fleet A race saw the last four

boats move across to Fleet B, while each Fleet B race saw the first four boats join Fleet A. The winner is decided by a points system, a win earning one point, while last place is 30 points, the boat with the lowest tally taking first place. “I enjoy the comradeship with the rest of the guys, you’ll find it’s not really a young man’s sport, most of the people are retired or semi-retired, although saying that there was a group from Otago who were in their early 30s or so,” says Ken. “I also like the challenge of setting the boats up to get them to sail properly and fast and there’s no two ways about it, the minute you put two boats on the water, you’re always racing, it’s just human nature.” Ken says everyone sailed a good regatta with the win going to Graham Roberts from Tauranga. The club also thanks Thawley Orchard for allowing the regatta on their pond.

Museum buzzing with bugs Locally Owned and Operated

‘Bug wrangler’ Brian Lawton says he was born with a rare disease a compulsive interest in natural history. From horror movies to the Lord of the Rings, Brian’s cavalry of bugs have developed quite the following around the country, and now they have taken up residency at the Nelson Provincial Museum. The museum’s latest interactive exhibition, Bugs! Our Backyard Heroes, opened last Thursday and runs until February 11. It features cockroaches, Avondale spiders, weta, locusts, stick insects and crickets, and a giant

poisonous centipede, which have have all come from Brian’s Auckland home. He has already taken the exhibition to Puke Ariki Museum in New Plymouth, where it attracted more than 65,000 people. “One of my passions is to share bugs with other people and what better way to do it than this,” he says. “The bugs really bring this show alive.” He says the one bug in the exhibition that “will really get people scratching” is the American cockroach – a bug that he has been breeding in captivity for over thirty years. “They are the most diseased bug in the world, but they actually clean themselves regularly and will usually eat their own skin – you don’t want to waste the protein, of course.” He says the exhibition can change people’s outlook on bugs from being “creepy and crawly” to fascinating, important creatures. “People spend ages here watching them, and they can see that a cockroach has got a personality when you see its face and everything it is doing – you don’t see it as just a ‘blah’ diseased bug.

‘Bug wrangler’ Brian Lawton has brought his bugs to the Nelson Provincial Museum, including an Avondale spider. The bugs feature in their latest exhibition, Bugs! Our Backyard Heroes, which opened last Thursday. Photo: Kate Russell. “Bugs are cool, they really are. The bigger, uglier and scarier they are, the more I’ve got to have them.” Shelley Doherty from the museum says the idea of having live bugs in one of their exhibitions is “pretty exciting.” “We haven’t had live creatures at

the museum for a really long time. There are plenty of educational hands-on activities as well as school holiday workshops which will hopefully get Nelson kids inspired to explore what’s in their backyard.” And if the sight of thousands of creepy crawlies isn’t enough for

some people, you can tantalize your taste buds with mealworm and ant lollypops, chocolate covered crickets, crunchy BBQ grasshoppers, and cricket flour from the museum’s shop. Bugs! Our Backyard Heroes runs from 28 September – 11 February, entry is free.

Founded by co-directors Mark Forbes and Andy Dumville, MPS started out with nothing more than a trailer and a lawn mower and has grown to one of Nelson’s more recent business success stories – an enterprising, multi-faceted service provider specialising in property maintenance. With 39 staff employed, MPS

offers general building and carpentry services, grounds maintenance, painting and decorating and commercial cleaning, along with two new divisions, biohazard decontamination and kitchen and cabinet joinery. Being a one stop shop makes MPS a very attractive proposition, especially for people who require multiple services. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE - PAINTING & DECORATING CARPENTRY - BIOHAZARD CLEANING - KITCHEN & JOINERY

0800 677 005 sash window repairs, cabinetry or a full custom-designed kitchen. “Our core business is still property maintenance,” says Mark. “So, whilst we have added complementary divisions to the company that have assisted in our growth, including DSK and biohazard decontamination, we generally spend most of our time working closely with customers around property and maintenance issues.” The new building is certainly eye catching, which is what Mark and Andy were aiming for when they first set about designing the site. “We wanted it to be slightly different and to attract attention, when the roof went on we saw a great opportunity to utilise its slope, at the end of the day it’s given us a wonderful profile,” says Andy. A warehouse accommodates shelving for all their property maintenance equipment and consumables, while the ground floor has a stylish office area and reception, with mezzanine office above. Plans are

also underway for a kitchen showroom, with the rear of the building a fully equipped joinery factory and a secure fenced off yard providing plenty of room for further storage for scaffolding and vehicles. MPS has recently been certified with Class A classification for Asbestos removal and remediation, which they assist a number of clients with. Combined with the continued methamphetamine problems in the area, MPS’s biohazard division is certainly kept busy. Andy has been at the forefront of developing MPS’s expertise in this area and it is something that is always evolving. Legislation is changing all the time and health and safety around this particular field means there is a high cost of compliance. Another service that complements the biohazard and painting divisions is their ability to offer shrink-wrap solutions, encapsulating an area to keep it dry for working in. An example of this can be found on MPS’s new premises where a scaffold garage

www.mpsnelson.co.nz

has been erected in the yard and shrink-wrapped to provide temporary storage. Andy and Mark firmly believe that the key to their success has been prompt service and doing the job right the first time. “We turn up when we say we will,” says Mark. “Plus, our staff are all uniformed and our vehicles are all sign-written, so we are inAndy Dumville and Mark Forbes established stantly recognised wherManor Property Services in 2010, since then ever we are. When Nelson defeated a French fleet in the Battle of the Nile in 1798, he returned to a hero’s welcome. In gratitude, the King of Naples named him, Duke of Bronte, part of his kingdom on the Isle of Sicily.

REVIEW: I was a little nervous taking my six-year-old daughter to the opening of the Little Mermaid Jr at the Theatre Royal on Sunday. You see, she had never attended any kind of theatre production before - but the Nelson Youth Theatre Company couldn’t have given her a better first live theatre experience. Directed by Jess Lively, the whole show was bursting with charm, colour and fun.

The production has a triple cast and on Sunday we saw the “Team Becky” rendition. A simple but convincing under-the-sea set, complete with rippling blue waves, was perfect and the costumes brought every creature to life, especially Flounder, who was played by Tobias Young. Ariel, the youngest daughter of King Triton was played by Becky Davies, whose voice matched the part, with Brooklyn Saunders playing her sidekick Sebastian. Matthew Edgar made a fine Prince Eric, while Liam Brennan impressed as King Triton and Chef Louis. But the highlight for me was

Stella Steven’s rendition of Ursula, who had the swagger and charisma of the evil sea witch down to a tee. The rest of the cast did a fantastic job and really brought the story to life. All of the memorable songs are there, including ‘Under the Sea’, ‘Part of Your World’ and ‘Kiss the Girl’, and the one-hour length was perfect for children, who were able to dress up and meet the cast after the show. The Little Mermaid Jr is on at the Theatre Royal until this Saturday, 7 October, and is the perfect outing for these school holidays. I’d go and see it, even if I didn’t have children.

Butterfly rocks to recognise infant loss

Kate Russell

A treasure hunt with a heartfelt message is coming to Fairfield Park. 120 butterfly painted rocks will be hidden there next Sunday to commemorate pregnancy and infant loss awareness day. It is a combined effort from the St Vincent de Paul youth programme and Project Butterfly, who have already established a memorial pathway at the park as a way for families to remember children they have lost. Around 20 students from the youth programme, who attend St Joseph’s School and St Paul's School, came up with the idea of painting the rocks with a single butterfly and a message written on the back. It ties into the Nelson Rocks phenomenon, where painted rocks are hidden around parks in the Nelson region for people to find, keep, or re-hide. St Vincent de Paul youth coordinator Philippa Winch says it took the students around a month to paint the rocks, with them giving up their school lunch-breaks once a week. “The students have also been

helping to clean the pathway – they have got so much out of the whole process and shown so much empathy for what it must feel like to lose a child.” Project Butterfly founder Rebekah Joy says she was blown away with the offer. “It was so thrilling and inspiring that young people want to be a part of it, and it was really great when they approached me and asked ‘what can we do to help?’ “I am really impressed with their thoughtfulness, and the way that our pathway will be used for the event shows a great deal of compassion.” She says she wanted to commemorate infant loss awareness days with something “nice, light and fun” without the heaviness that comes with losing a child. “We don’t want this to be morbid.” Rebekah says she’ll be hiding the rocks between 9am and 10am next Sunday, 15 October, and children are welcome to come find them throughout the day. She is also encouraging others to paint their own butterfly rocks and hide them in Fairfield Park before the day.

With some of the painted butterfly rocks are; front row from left, Ella Gunn, 11 and Lucia McKinnon, 12. Back row from left, Aine Tanner, 12, youth coordinator Philippa Winch, Charlotte McKnight, 11, and Rebekah Joy from Project Butterfly. The students pictured are from St Joseph's School. Charity raises $30k for kids Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The generosity of the business community was highlighted when people gave, and then gave some more, to help Nelson Tasman charity Walk With Us raise almost $30,000 to help put shoes on the region’s kids. Walk with Us was formed in 2013 and has so far provided over 300 free pairs of school and sports shoes for children, aged between five and 13, from families in need. The trust is run by volunteers and last Thursday held a fund-raising auction at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms with author of The Resilient Farmer Doug Avery as guest speaker.

Trustee Jenny Bates says they had a long list of generous sponsors donating items for the auction night and some of them were happy to go the extra mile for the charity. All the items were popular but when bidding heated-up for a motorhome holiday and a helicopter flight, the sponsors who donated the items doubled their original offer to make sure no one missed out. “There were two people bidding for the holiday in the motorhome so Tony Terrell (owner of Discover NZ Motorhomes) put his hand up and said he’d donate another one,” Jenny says. “The same thing happened for the 30 minute helicopter flight - Craig Boote didn’t need any

convincing to double his donation which was a lovely gesture.” The live auction raised about $22,500 with other big-ticket items including a free year’s gym membership at the Richmond Aquatic Centre and an Abel Tasman cruise for 20 people aboard the FV Transition. Two businesses Aimex/Hydraulink and Mike Pero Real Estate helped out announcing significant cash donations to the charity. Jenny says Doug also played a role, refusing to accept any payment for his appearance or his accommodation in Nelson. “We were overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity,” Jenny says. “This will help pay for enough shoes to last quite a while.”

Master Games encourages comeback Simon Bloomberg

Melody King-Turner can’t wait to get back on track when she lines up for the sprints in the South Island Masters Games at Saxton Field on Saturday. Melody will be joining around 2300 athletes aged 30 to 89 who will be competing in over 40 sports at venues around Nelson and Tasman, starting on Wednesday. And like many of the Masters Games' mums, Melody will be making her sporting comeback after spending the last 12 years raising children, five in her case. “I started sprinting when I was 13 at Marlborough Girls College and then got back into it when we moved to Nelson,” Melody says. “I ran the 100, 200 and 400 for Athletics Nelson before I had Melody King-Turner and her daughter Layla, aged three, at the Saxton children. Field athletics track last week. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. “This my first time back. I

haven’t raced since I was 26 and I can’t wait – I get a real kick out of it.” Although Melody says she has been keeping reasonably fit over the last year or so, she knew she needed to get back on track if she was going to enter the Master Games. So, she headed down to the Saxton Field and joined in the Thursday night training sessions with the next generation of runners. “It’s for young people but I jumped in on that. There’s one other mum from Motueka who is also doing the sprints at the Masters Games and we’re really enjoying it.” Melody says her children, aged three through to 11, are all supportive of her goal to race at the games and it has even inspired her nine-year-old daughter Chloe to start training as well. “She’s a good cross-country run-

RUGBY: The Tasman Makos are set for a double header this week, playing North Harbour on Wednesday night in Blenheim at 7.35pm, then on Sunday at Trafalgar Park against Auckland. Melody will be competing in the 60m and 100m, and “possibly the 200m”, at the track and field session at Saxton Field on Saturday. Sport Tasman’s event manager Rita Merriman says Saxton Field will be the hub of the games with 13 sports and around 1000 competitors based at the complex. The games start on Wednesday and continue through to Sunday, with most of the team sports being played at the weekend. Rita says the number of athletes and sports are similar to the last South Island Masters Games held in Nelson in 2015 when they spent an estimated $2.8million in the region. She says a dedicated team of 250 volunteers will help to run the games.

ROWING: Nelson's Zoe McBride picked up another World Rowing Championship medal over the weekend, picking up silver in the lightweight women's double sculls with crew mate Jackie Kiddle. RUGBY: A thrilling last minute dropped goal secured a 20-18 win for Nelson Bays Under-16 over Canterbury Metro Under-16 at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Tasman Under-18 also had success, beating Canterbury Metro Under-18, 34-15, also at Trafalgar Park.

Lynley still has a spring in her step Simon Bloomberg It’s almost 30 years since rower Lynley Coventry won a bronze medal at the Seoul Olympics but the Nelson athlete showed she is still superfit, winning the veteran’s section of the Torpedo 7 Spring Challenge near Geraldine on Saturday. Lynley joined her friends Jane Martin and Jane Orbell in team Nancy Loves Bikes to win the veteran’s section of the all-women’s adventure race that attracted 597 teams. The trio rafted 11km down the Rangitata River, trekked 15km up Mt Peel and mountainbiked 70km before completing an orienteering section, to win in 10hr 8min 56sec. Although Lynley has competed in plenty of Spring Challenges, winning the open section in 2013, she says Saturday’s 11th edition was by far the toughest. “It was a fantastic race but it was physically demanding,” she says. “There were lots of big climbs – there was one climb after another. “The trek was steep and then we had a really steep section on the mountainbike. We had to push our bikes up 800 vertical metres – it was so steep it was unrideable.” Saturday’s win continued a successful year for Lynley who won four gold medals in the rowing at the World Masters Games in Auckland in April. She says training for the rowing gave her a good base fitness for the Spring Challenge although her preparation was almost torpedoed by a knee injury she suffered while skiing six weeks before the event. “I was pretty fit from the rowing although it’s a different kind of fitness. Rowing is a big, flat out effort for four minutes while adventure racing is a 10-hour slog. “But then I twisted my knee skiing and had to have a break from training. I hadn’t been skiing for 30 years and knew it was a bad idea, but fortunately it came right just in time.” It was also a good day for the Martin family with Jane’s daughter Hannah teaming up with Jess Alloway and Charlotte Tucker to win the junior six-hour race in 6hr 45min 39sec. Nelson’s Susie Wood featured in a sprint finish in the open race with her team of Sophie Hart and Fleur Pawsey just missing out to Jo Williams, Simone Maier and Sia Svendsen by one second. Susie’s team caught the leaders on the mountainbike stage and the two teams were locked together during the 4km orienteering before Jo, Simone and Sia sprinted clear in the finishing chute to win in 8hr 10min 52sec. Sophie, who is a three-time World Adventure Racing Champion and had her eight-monthold baby Willa watching her cross the finish line, says the course was “one of the hardest” Spring Challenges she has competed in. “We had a great day. The course was really hard and kept us honest out there. “The last 50m to the finish line was the most challenging. It was just all on and I didn’t have any gas left in the tank, unfortunately.” Another Nelson competitor, Georgia Whitla, was third in Team Sneaky Weasel Gals in 8hr 48min 22sec. Race director Nathan Fa’avae says the quality of the racing was exceptional with “amazing female athletes in the top nine-hour teams”. “The top two teams had multiple World Adventure Racing Championship-winning girls. While Spring Challenge is for everyone, it’s really inspirational for other women to see a hard-fought race going on at the top end of the field.” Nathan says the race went smoothly with 160 staff and volunteers ensuring the 1800 competitors were safe.

Brothers sign on for Tasman United Tasman United’s latest recruits have travelled a long way to Nelson. Abdulla and Yousif Al Kalisy are the sons of Iraqi refugees who grew up in Auckland. They were officially announced as the newest signings for Nelson Pine LVL Tasman United today. Abdulla, 21, and Yousif, 19, come into the strong squad after stints last year at Auckland City and Waitakere. Looking to further their All White ambitions, New Zealand Football directed the Al Kalisy brothers to Tasman head coach Davor Tavich. “The dream is to play professionally, and when we spoke to New Zealand Football they recommended Davor after seeing him at their coaching clinic last year,” says Abdulla. Nelson Pine LVL Tasman United compete in the national premiership which starts on the October 22.

Becoming the David Havili become the region's first modern All Black to start at a local junior team and go right through the grades to the Makos before making it in black. Nelson Weekly reporter Andrew Board had the privilege of watching his test debut, with his family in Motueka. As David Havili stands in the middle of his first All Blacks haka in Argentina, the television camera briefly captures a glimpse of his face. It looks like the others around him – stern, focused. But even that glimpse on a

television screen 10,000km away was recognized in a heartbeat by the person who knows it best, his mother. “There he is!” she blurted. “He’ll be nervous as hell.” Earlier in the day Jenny Bisley, now also known as mother of All Black David Havili, killed time and her nerves by doing the vacuuming, going to the supermarket and doing whatever she could to take her mind of her eldest son’s test debut for the All Blacks on Sunday morning. The price of flights and the time to get to Argentina meant she couldn’t be there to watch the game in person. So she’s at home, in front of the television and surrounded by her sister, brother-inlaw, nephew, family friends, David’s cat “Mischief ” and her youngest son Wily, himself a local rugby star with the Nelson Rugby Club. On the walls of the lounge are photos of David and “William”. The boys as preschoolers, as young teenag-

ers, and many more of them playing rugby. On one wall hangs David’s jersey from when he made the New Zealand under-20 team, his Player of the Year trophy for this year’s champion Crusader team sits on a wall unit below it and there are photos of David’s first try as a Mako and another of his first try as a Crusader. In the far corner of that same wall is a mural made up of photos from when David met the visiting All Blacks in 1999 as a 5 year old. He’s there with Jonah Lomu, Pita Alatini, Tana Umaga and

Jeff Wilson. As the game kicks off, David finds his way to the sideline, from where he will later come on as a substitute. At his home in Motueka, the focus of his family switches from trying to point out David to watching rugby and the All Blacks start well, in particular the man who is playing in David’s position, Damien McKenzie. “It’s the best I’ve ever seen him play,” points out David’s uncle Rick. “He’ll need a rest after all these runs,” he jokes. mum of an All Black starts to light up. “I can’t wait for David to get on”, her friends comment. Neither can she. Then, almost as an anticlimax, his substitution into the game ten minutes before full time is missed by the commentators and no one realizes he’s on the pitch until, suddenly, the ball is passed to… David! “There he is!” yells his mum. His aunt Maree lets out a whoop and everyone inches forward. Commentator Tony Johnston notes that Havili is the 19th Nelson College old boy to play for the All Blacks. “And the first from Motueka High School,” points out Jenny. A few minutes later he makes a bursting run up the middle of the ground before delivering a pin-point pass to a supporting player. The play gets approval from the room. “What a run,” they say. Then, as the game clock ticks over 80 minutes, the All Blacks pack one final scrum. Commentator Justin Marshall thinks it could be set up well for a try to Havili, “if they can get it off the forwards”.

David Havili's mum Jenny Bisley in the lounge of her home in Motueka. Photo: Andrew Board. The scrum goes nowhere, then captain Kieran Read picks up the ball and passes it to half back TJ Perenara who then passes it to… DAVID HAVILI! The former Motueka United, Huia, Motueka High School, Nelson College, Nelson Rugby Club, Tasman Makos and Crusaders star scores a try in his

first ever test match for the All Blacks. His family live every second with him. “Look at his smile,” says his mum. “Oh my god,” says his aunt. “He’s making me cry.” It is the perfect ending for boy who had his eyes on being an All Black from a young age. Jenny says it was obvious in primary

school that he was a very good player. “People would say all the time ‘he’s going to be an All Black’. I remember his primary school teacher would say it all the time. He was always sporty and always very determined.” Maree retold the story from a primary school friend who remembers David practicing his

signature for when he made the team. And when his mum framed his under-20 jersey for the wall he told her. “That won’t be the only black jersey you’ll be framing.” Jenny says she’s proud of her son. “It’s hard to even realise he’s there. As a mother you watch a lot of games when they’re growing up and do a lot of washing. But you also see the down periods, when people told him that he wouldn’t get anywhere because of his size.” After his dream debut, Jenny – herself a former rugby player with Huia – says his job now was to stay there. “With Ben Smith and Israel Dagg still to come back it might be hard, but every time he’s given an opportunity he makes the most of it, so who knows. Either way, I’m very proud of him.” After taking phone calls and replying to text messages of support, Jenny’s next task was to clear some room on that wall because David was right, there is another black jersey she’ll have to put up there.

The event was established by the club last year and saw members don dresses before taking on some Super D style races. This year however, with much of Codgers MTB Park out of action due to logging, the group opted for a leisurely ride around town, still in their dresses of course. The idea behind Froctober is to provide an event more focused on family fun than competition, allowing members of all ages to get together for a social day. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
