Businesses have post-Covid boom Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson businesses in the central city have had some of the best months in recent memory as

locals support local and visitors spend their money around the country rather than overseas. At last week’s Uniquely Nelson AGM there were plenty of reports from CBD businesses that suggest the worst is behind

them. “Nelson is punching above its weight compared to other similar towns,” says Uniquely Nelson’s Simon Duffy. “There is a positive nervousness.” Kevin Hopgood of Hopgood’s

and Co Restaurant and Bar says that this past winter has been one of his best in 11 years. “We have had lot of local and New Zealand support. For the first ever time we have made a small profit. Usually we are

very lucky to break even in the winter, and sometimes even run at a loss and then make it back in summer. “It’s very reassuring.”

Council defends beach bin ban Locally Owned and Operated

WEDNESDAY 11 November 2020

Erin Bradnock Nelson City Council is defending the trial removal of rubbish bins along Tāhunanui Beach despite online backlash. The council says it has removed bins along the beach to minimise the risk of fly-away litter from over-flowing bins and says it is increasing the capacity of other bins further from the water. The removal of bins across the beachfront has sparked debate on the council's Facebook page. One commenter labelling the decision as “careless and poorly thought through”. The council has defended the removal saying the beachfront bins detract from the look and feel of what is an otherwise natural environment. The council labelled the trial as the environmentally responsible approach in the hopes that people will take their rubbish with them as it is not always possible to service the bins as soon as they become full. “The rationale is that if people see bins, they know that there will be a public service to remove any litter. This can encourage people to abdicate

Bins will be removed from Tāhunanui Beach as part of a trial to stop fly-away litter. Photo: File. responsibility for their waste and consequently, care less about it. In areas where there are bins, even if they are full, people still tend to leave their waste beside the bin as they assume it will be picked up through scheduled servicing. If there are no bins, the vast majority of people will take their waste with them to dispose of at another bin in the vicinity, or at home.” Young environmentalist Sophie Weenink Smith feels community feedback has been ignored, describing the trial as “concerning”. “People won't get on board with picking up rubbish. If the tide comes in and there is no decent person to pick up some lazy

persons rubbish then off it goes into the ocean,” says Sophie. The 15-year-old regularly organises beach and river cleanups and believes the removal of bins will see the similar levels of rubbish she’s seen across Maitai River. In a Facebook post on Monday council says the removal of bins from public spaces including urban parks and beaches has been effective in other cities in New Zealand. Bins will remain in the busier locations back from the beach at Tāhunanui Recreation Reserve, in the car parks, at beach entrance and exit points, and in the playground and other recreation areas.

Modellers Pond replacement project moves to next development stage Kate Russell Construction of the “swiftly” moving $3.75m Tāhunanui Modellers Pond replacement project could start next financial year. Nelson City Council voted unanimously to move to the next stage of detailed design at a sports and recreation committee meeting last Thursday. This vote included approving bringing forward $170,000 of funding to complete the next phase, which would cover the resource consents, stormwater sampling, hazardous activities testing and detailed design. “We’ve moved swiftly with the project. We’re ahead of where we expected to be, which is fantastic, and we’d like to move to the next stage,” manager of capital projects Lois Plum told councillors. The project will see the pond being filled in and replaced with a community recreation area. This will include picnic areas, benches, water fountains and barbeques as well as a native wetland fringe along the foreshore. Councillors voted to progress with the plan back in June after more than two decades of the pond being plagued with weeds and algae.

An impression of what the Tāhunanui Modellers Pond area could look like. Image: Supplied. Lois said that discussions with stakeholders and local businesses have been positive. “We have been having conversations with the Modellers Society and they are quite excited about being able to extend their train tracks.” She said that parks and facilities asset manager Andrew Petheram had been around local businesses, including Natureland, and they have been obtaining “quite a lot” of feedback through Shape Nelson. Lois said they will also be taking water park elements into consideration through the detailed design due to requests from the public. Interpretive panels and artwork are also “on the radar”. Lois says the plan is to now

complete the design component and lodge resource consents. “Once the draft Long Term Plan goes through the full process and there’s an agreement for the funding, we will move into construction in the new financial year and we expect to be able to complete the work during that financial year.” Councillor Mel Courtney said he was “lost for words”. “I think this is a very important point we’ve reached after 20 years …. now we are moving swiftly with this, it has been a very complex issue.” Councillor Brian McGurk said it was “important to maintain the momentum of the project”. “I urge everyone to support it.”

The Natureland Wildlife Trust has unveiled a master plan which includes expanding to nearby land, building a tropical butterfly house and potentially making its enclosures floatable. Trust chair Stephen Standley and new manager Ruth Seabright presented the plan to Nelson City Council’s sport and recreation committee meeting on Thursday morning, asking for financial support. Stephen says the main feature of the plan is to build a tropical house for butterflies and fish on the plot of land adjoining the zoo. It would also become the home to Natureland’s existing iguana and pygmy marmosets. The extended area would include a relocated entrance, ticketing office, retail store and administration area. He says the plan will also look at how to protect the zoo from future sea level rise and climate change, with a view to construct new buildings on tall piles or have them built with the ability to float. Stephen says the move will see Natureland as the first zoo adapting for climate change

and rising seas and provides a unique opportunity to become a centre of excellence for climate change action. “Literally we believe we’ll be the first in the world. Imagine a boat like structure of buildings adapted to float and you will see that this could be an iconic development.” But the plans don’t come without a cost. Stephen says an application will be made for a $30,000 capital grant from council in the first year of the Long Term Plan to assist with fencing the new area should it be added into their current lease. The trust would then seek funding for the plan through a Lottery’s grant but says first seed funding is required. He says the trust will seek a further $300,000 in years three or four of council’s LTP as seed funding for the project. “Our request is that council, on behalf of our community, continues to provide grant funding at current levels to enable some stability while we focus on the master plan. He says the trust will prepare a business case before the $300,000 funding application.

Then on December 15 one lucky shopper will win $5000, just in time for Christmas. The promotion is being run by Nelson Weekly and Uniquely Nelson, with the Weekly’s managing director Andrew Board saying that the promotion is a great way to encourage local businesses as well as giving something back to local shoppers. “It’s an easy way to put yourself up for the chance to win big, as well as supporting our local businesses who have had a tough time of it this year.” All you have to do is enter

Mountainbike trails set to remain open Staff Reporter

Public access to some of Nelson’s most popular mountainbike trails, including the Codgers/ Fringed Hill areas, looks set to remain open, subject to full approval from council. Koata Ltd, which owns the land in question on behalf of Ngāti Koata, asked council for remuneration for the “considerable management burden with no financial return”. Koata Ltd is also not comfortable with the proposed Maitai Recreation Hub which it considers will exacerbate the present issues. It says it will close public access by the end of the year unless an agreement is reached. To solve the issue, on Thursday, Nelson City Council’s sports and recreation committee recommended to approve an interim grant of $80,000 for the current 2020/21 financial year to Koata Ltd. This would allow public access to its land for recreation to continue and go towards the management of recreation activities on its land. The land was purchased by Koata Ltd in 2014 as a commercial redress property under Treaty of Waitangi settlement legislation. Estimated mountainbiking numbers show around 25,000 using Turners track annually, which is just one of many Codgers trails, while there is a total of over 30,000 cyclists estimated to be using the three main climbing routes in Sharlands annually.

While the world was gripped with the most dramatic election in modern American history last week, a much more civil display of democracy was carried out at Stoke School. In a bid to engage the students in the world of politics, a school-wide election was held. There were six parties with nine students holding various ministerial portfolios running for election. These included Omaio (Māori name for Stoke) Stoke First, Students First, the Teddy Bear Party, All Be Active, and Little Minds and Big Ideas. On Thursday afternoon the votes were carefully tallied by the student-led electoral commission. The people have spoken, and this term will see The Teddy Bear Party (TBP) assume power. In a shrewd move, party member Lucy Colvin says the name was chosen to appeal to the younger demographic. With the losing parties

Room Two teacher Jodie Lancaster says the initiative was modelled off the New Zealand MMP system with the school split into separate electorates. “They are getting a full understanding of how New Zealand votes.” Room One teacher Caitlin Ryan says the election has garnered great interest in politics, with one student having told her she wants to be in government when she’s

Ironically, it was politics that was able to unite the school in the post-Covid period. “During level two we had half the school playing on one side and half on the other and it felt a bit disjointed for a while, now they are reconnecting and it has brought the school back together,” says Jodie.

‘Heartbreaking’ closure of Nelson ARK Jo Kent Staff at the Nelson ARK, a charity that uses dogs to help provide mental health support for young people, have been left “deeply disappointed” at having to close their doors after nearly 20 years. The decision to shut down was tough to make, but the charity was left with little choice after the threat of Covid-19 made running their courses near impossible. The ARK taught troubled young people compassion, respect and responsibility by pairing them with

a rescue dog, which they then had to train and prepare for adoption. “Having to wear masks or socially distance just doesn’t work when trying to build human relationships as it’s all about being in close contact to each other and reading social cues to create empathy,” says co-ordinator Karen Howieson. And, as many of the volunteers who help run the charity are in the ‘at risk’ group, it also meant staff numbers had diminished. In such uncertain times, it was unrealistic for the charity to

Community studio needs support, Wednesday, 30 September: Studio One will be able to keep their doors open thanks to support from locals. The Rutherford Mews studio, which is home to a collective of performers, held a fundraising show on 3 October. Studio member Jasmine Turner says they sold out of tickets by the time the doors opened. “We raised just over $1000 that will help keep the studio open until the end of the year.” She says they are still looking for members and people to use the studio for hires - email studioonenelson@gmail.com to find out more. Book bonanza hits Founders, Wednesday, 14 October: A bumper year of donations to the Founders Book Fair has resulted in a record-breaking amount raised in support of Founders Heritage Park. The 10-day fair, held from 17 - 26 October, drew an estimated 10,900 people and raised a new record of $157,000, an increase of $6700 on last year. Coordinator Karen Clark said feedback from the public and volunteers was that this year’s fair was enjoyable and relaxed. “Good quality books donated by the public, great community support from those who attended and bought items from the fair, and the year-round dedication and expertise of the volunteers ensured another excellent result.”

continue as even being at Level 2 meant they had to stop running. “It’s heartbreaking to have to close because we are so unique,” says board chair Suzanne Max. “We’ve turned the lives of so many local kids around, it’s been a real privilege to watch the positive changes in them.” Opened in 2002, the charity has worked with 22 schools across the Nelson Tasman region and has helped over 1000 young people. Although funding had started to become an issue, it wasn’t the only contributing factor in the closure.

“Even if someone came to us with a blank cheque tomorrow, we still couldn’t guarantee we’d be able to run the courses. With Covid, it’s totally out of our control,” says Suzanne. “All our dogs have now been rehomed and it’s with great sadness that we are saying goodbye,” says Karen. The charity is having a farewell party at Stonehurst Farm on Saturday 14 November from 2pm4pm and welcomes anyone who has been involved in their work over the years to come and say goodbye.

Council sells community housing for $20m Staff Reporter

The Nelson Fire Service’s Craig Davies presented awards to volunteers Steve Webster, David Johnston, Chris Noonan, Dereck Nilson and Jason Everett. Photo: Supplied.

Volunteer firefighters honoured at awards Erin Bradnock The sacrifice and dedication of the Nelson volunteer fire brigade community were celebrated last Sunday at the annual service honours award night. The honours night is supported by the National United Fire Brigade Association to recognise the ongoing commitment of Nelson’s volunteer fire brigade and their families. Volunteers Steve Webster, David Johnston, Chris Noonan, Dereck Nilson and Jason Everett received service honours for their

ongoing work for the volunteer fire brigade. Together, the five service members hold 65 years of volunteer experience. “They’re a great organisation to be in and fire emergency are really supportive of their volunteers,” says Jason, who received a service award after volunteering for 23 years. Jason is just two years off the 25-year gold star award, other awards range upwards from three years of service. “The awards are always a good opportunity to get the families together and to thank the partners as they are a big part of the community,” he says.

Nelson City Council has sold its 142 community housing units to the Government for $19.8 million. The council says the sale to Kāinga Ora is a mutually beneficial agreement that will increase investment in housing in Nelson, while retaining access to community housing for existing tenants. The agreement will also put $12m from the sale into a 'housing reserve' to support affordable and social housing projects in Nelson. The remainder of the money will held back for up to 15 years for any share of the costs required for units that may undergo retrofitting and renewal, consents for expanding the housing and rent top-ups, should any be necessary, for tenants who do not qualify for the government rent subsidy. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says the sale follows a consultation last year that asked Nelsonians their thoughts on divesting the properties to a new provider. Having heard and considered 79 submissions, council approved divestment in June 2019. “The new housing reserve is excellent news for the community, and a resounding investment from Kāinga Ora in our Smart Little City. What’s more, this is an agreement that continues to prioritise the welfare of our existing community

Waitlists for council community housing, Nelson Tasman Housing Trust housing and the MSD’s housing register for the region have been hitting all-time highs. There has been just over a 100 per cent increase in applicants on the government’s housing register for Nelson since the 2018 Census and there are 20 times more applicants than five years ago. Mayor Reese said the agreement with Kāinga Ora is a strong sign of both organisations’ commitment to improving the housing situation in Nelson. “We know that the need for affordable and social housing is continuing to grow. This agreement is a significant opportunity to help provide quality housing for Nelsonians who might otherwise struggle to find a home on the private market.” Kāinga Ora, as at June 30, owns 563 properties in the NCC Territorial Local Authority. This comprises of 41 one-bedroom, 286 twobedroom, 201 three-bedroom, 28 four-bedroom and 7 five-bedroom properties. The NCC portfolio of properties is located across nine complexes providing 49 bedsits, 50 single and 48 double bedroom units for elderly tenants. This transfer would therefore see Kāinga Ora’s presence in the Nelson community increase to owning and managing 705 properties.

housing tenants. “There will now be a handover period where our tenants will be supported as their tenancies switch to Kāinga Ora.” Kāinga Ora was established on October 1, 2019 and is made up of HLC, Kiwibuild and Housing New Zealand. Kāinga Ora area manager Dale Bradley says the organisation has a significant presence in Nelson and is looking forward to forming close relationships with community housing tenants. “Kāinga Ora has many years of experience of running social housing, and our team of local staff are really excited and looking forward to meeting our new tenants and working to support them in their communities.’’ The new ownership under Kāinga Ora would take effect in February 2021. In the lead-up to the transfer, council says it will work collaboratively with Kāinga Ora, the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust to ensure community housing tenants are well informed, reassured and supported. Over the next few weeks, MSD staff will contact and support each tenant with an assessment, which all public housing tenants require, and make sure they are getting all the financial support they’re entitled to.

Workers quit together Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Mo Taylor has a goal – to be completely free of nicotine replacement therapy products by his 46th birthday. He is one of four Stoke New World employees who are now nine-weeks smoke-free, thanks to the Nelson Marlborough Health stop smoking workplace programme. Mo says he’s been smoking a packet of cigarettes a day since he was 21 apart from a few smoke-free weeks during surgeries. “I feel positive. It’s still a long road, but hopefully by my birthday on 13 March that’ll be that, and the patches will be done.” He says the $190 to $200 a week he was spending on cigarettes now goes towards new fishing reels and “a few new pairs of shoes”. When a phone call came into the supermarket to see if any staff would be interested in participating in the programme, Mo says he was reluctant. “I wasn’t too sure about it, but I was looking at what I was doing to my life, and actually, I wasn’t that well. Most mornings I would be sick, and it was affecting not only my health, but my state of mind.” The group started the seven-week programme at the end of August. They met one hour per week during worktime with quit coach Karen Petrie, who Mo credits for his success. “The support and the information I’ve had from Karen and being around a group of people has actually made it quite an enjoyable experience.” Di Bilson says the programme has been “life-changing” for her. “Smoking was financially ruining me. Being on one income, I couldn’t really afford to smoke. But I’d always

I was smoking a packet a day, that’s $180 a week.” Lynette Emms, 64, will be retiring soon and says she started smoking when she was 16. “I’ve only given up once in my life, for three months. But I was getting sick. It was my health that was worrying me,” she says. “There were no excuses anymore, I was putting it off. I had the support and the products, and I had somebody to put me on the right path.” She says she is feeling “fantastic” because of the programme. “I don’t use my puffer anymore, I was a bad asthmatic because of my smoking. It’s the best thing.” Karen says the programme is free and provides motivational group and one-to-one support, nicotine replacement therapy products and information about other quitsmoking products and services. Nelson’s talented young musicians took the stage on Friday night in the 10th annual Rockquest Bandquest competition, the nationwide music competition for intermediate and primary students. Broadgreen Intermediate band the Remnints came away with the first place and $400 from The Rockshop for their school. Bandquest works as a platform for the next generation of contemporary musicians to step on stage and perform, and this year in Nelson attracted 10 keen bands to compete at Annesbrook Centre. Nelson architecture shines at awards Kate Russell Reporter

Nelson’s new airport terminal and a hillside home claimed national awards at two separate ceremonies last week. Studio Pacific Architecture picked up the Sir Miles Warren award for Excellence in Commercial Architecture for the Nelson Airport terminal at Thursday’s New Zealand Institute of Architects awards. Judges described the building as “a great hovering timber tent that celebrates the excitement of air travel”. “The design process is a testament to what can be achieved with a strong design team using integrated design process, not only in New Zealand but globally, for all passive buildings. “Nelson Airport is set to become a defining moment for Nelson and for New Zealand regional architecture, and an

attraction in its own right.” Chairman of Nelson Airport, Paul Steere, said Studio Pacific had “stood by their side” for the past five years during the build of their vision through to commissioning. “Their guidance, explanations and support were invaluable in us meeting the challenge of the most complicated build in Nelson ever, resulting in an iconic landmark of which the community will be proud in the decades to come.” Meanwhile, a contemporary hillside home with expansive views of Tasman Bay has won a 2020 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Award. Designed by Tony Karsten of Karsten Architectural Design Ltd, the project titled ‘Bellevue House’, received a Commended Award in the Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 Category at the Nelson/ Marlborough ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Regional

Awards last Friday. Located on a steep hill site, with strict planning rules and challenging geotechnical conditions, a clever design was required. Judges described the home as geometric, orthogonal, and minimal. They said the design was a clever response to a complex site and demanding brief. Gregory Watts, CEO of Architectural Designers New Zealand, praised Tony for his considered and inspired response to a difficult site. “With its beautiful views, it is a magical spot for the homeowners to enjoy. It is fantastic to see members of ADNZ finding solutions to complicated sites that might have sat unused otherwise.” Regional winners were announced from August to October, while the National Awards Gala will be held on Friday November 20 in Auckland.

RESTORATION & MODIFICATION

We have moved: Cnr 2 Parere Street and St VinCent StreetS, nelSon

This year’s Vintage Car Club’s car rally is taking place on Sunday the 23rd of August and following in the tread of the last three year’s events they should have over 450 entrants joining in the relaxed, fun event. It’s a chance for proud car owners to share their pride and joy. The rally itself is a non-competitive simple process with no questions to be answered or timed sections to complete. It’s just a fun organised route with a group of likeminded motor vehicle lovers. All local car and motor bike clubs are also welcome. The rally has two runs, one of approximately 60 km and the other of approximately 90 km. Each vehicle will receive printed rally route instructions and a window poster as part of the $10.00 entry cost per vehicle. There will be generous spot prizes for any car entered in

the rally. The Vintage Car Club are extremely grateful for the support from many local businesses who have been very generous in supplying the spot prizes in these difficult times. Each year the number of entrants to the rally increases and the Club is hoping for an increase on last year’s number with 450 to 500 cars expected to be attending this year’s rally.

Checking out the cars pre and post the rally This is the Vintage Car Club’s fourth annual car rally set up to add to the $18,000 tally they’ve

raised for our local Cancer Society over the previous three years. The event is a display of the magnificence of motoring history from the early 1900’s through to modern everyday cars. It demonstrates how huge the range of vehicles that live in the Nelson Tasman area are and provides such a wonderfully colourful motoring event. The rally is open to the public to wander around and appreciate the fine machinery. Your gold coin donation will also go to the Cancer Society to be put towards raising the awareness, undertaking research, and most importantly, supporting local families suffering the

Being part of the annual Vintage Car Club’s Daffodil Day car rally is a fun way to help the Nelson Cancer Society fund ongoing research and provide support for local families suffering the effects of cancer. effects of all forms of Cancer. Food and coffee carts will be on site at the start and end of the runs, but there is no Eftpos available so everyone will need to bring some cash for donations as well as snacks and drinks. The rally’s start and end venue is the Vintage Car Club’s facilities at the Nelson Speedway grounds on Lansdowne Road at the end of Lower Queen Street, Richmond, where there is lots of off-street parking. There will be plenty of time be-

fore and after the runs to have a wander around and inspect some very interesting and sometimes expensive vehicles along with the average everyday commuter. The event will be open at the Lansdowne Road gate from 11am. Vehicles will leave on their runs around 1 pm and return at approximately 2.30 pm. At around 3:30 pm the Vintage Car Club will have the prize giving and the raffle will be drawn. For more information, visit

www.nelsonvcc.org.nz or phone Jim Wareing on 027 544 9998. Established in 1964, Nelson’s Vintage Car Club is in great shape with over 300 members. Nelson has always had a number of car enthusiasts restoring and driving vehicles from the past and the public have always supported and encouraged old cars in good humoured fashion. If you own or have an interest in any motor vehicle older than 30 years, you are welcome to join the club.

Summer is just around the corner If you are thinking of buying a pop-up pool this summer, know the rules and keep your kids safe. Any pool with sides less than 1.2 metres high, where the water depth can exceed 400mm, will require a compliant barrier. Here’s your checklist for a safe and fun summer in the pool: My pool has a barrier that restricts access to children under five years. There are no openings in the pool barrier greater than 100mm. My pool gate opens away from the pool, self-closes and has a child-proof latch. I don’t have anything climbable outside the barrier. I only have pool-related activities in the pool area.

Did you know that STIHL Shop Nelson is now open 7 days a week? What’s more, STIHL has recently won the Reader’s Digest title of ‘Trusted Brand’ 2020 for its amazing range of Garden Power Tools! Stihl Shop Nelson is also offering customers a GST free spring on selected items until the end of November including: HSA56 Battery Hedgetrimmer, NOW $385 (kit price) and NOW $239 (tool only), BGA56 Battery Blower, NOW $387 (kit price) and NOW $239 (tool only), HLA56 Battery Long Reach Hedgetrimmer, NOW $600 (kit price) and NOW $413 (tool only), and the MSA 120 C-B Battery Chainsaw Kit, NOW $500 (kit price) and NOW $395 (tool only). Located at 66 Vanguard Street, Stihl Shop Nelson is the place to go for all the battery power tools you need for outdoor maintenance. You can also shop online at www.stihlshop. co.nz. Home delivery and click and collect options available. Now open 7 days MON-FRI 7.30am – 5pm, SAT 9am –2pm, SUN 10am – 2pm. Be pool-safe this summer - Are you buying a pool this summer? While they are just the thing to keep you cool on hot days, be aware that some pop-up pools are easy for small children to get into, but can be really hard to get out of. Any pool capable of having a water depth of 400mm must have a physical barrier that restricts access to children under 5 years, as required by the Building Act 2004. In some cases, the pool sides are high enough to be compliant, but in all other cases when considering purchasing pop-up pools or swim spas, keep in mind the fencing requirements and make sure your pool is safe and compliant. A hard lockable lid may be sufficient for some small heated pools less than 5m2. Since the 2017 legislation changes, indoor pools

Winter was busy for Debug Nelson, getting rid of pests in people’s homes. “During the springsummer months, flies, spiders and ants start to take off,” says Debug Nelson owner Shane Warland. “During the warmer weather flies can become an issue, when people start having barbeques and the heat brings ants out from the ground to look for food.” Shane says Asian wasps can also get very ‘friendly’ at this time of year. “Last year we had over 70 wasp callouts.” Whatever pest problem you are facing, it pays to book early before it gets worse. “We will keep going until the job is done,” says Shane. “We have two vans out on the road which cover the Top of the South region.” Debug Nelson is a member of the Pest Management Association of New Zealand. “We’re still fighting the good fight on pest control.” If you have a pest problem at your place, call Shane on 027 251 8229 or visit www.debugnelson.co.nz.

Almost 70 of the 237 Russian and Ukranian seafarers who were in a Christchurch managed isolation facility have made their way to Nelson. Thirty-one members of the group of 237 tested positive for Covid-19 during their stay in managed isolation at the Sudima Hotel in Christchurch. Nelsonbased Sealord is one of the three companies which bought the crew into the country to work on its deep-sea trawlers. Two healthcare workers at the hotel caught the virus and are considered community cases, as they have not been overseas. Sealord chief executive Doug Paulin said 69 of the crew members working for his company were now in Nelson and on-board ships. Two Sealord crew members will stay in isolation until this weekend, because they are considered to be close contacts of positive cases. Paulin said the crew on its second boat will have their shore leave cancelled for seven days in order to provide reassurance to the public. About 200 crew members were due to arrive in New Zealand

Sealord general manager of operations, Doug Paulin. Photo: RNZ / Tracy Neal. from Moscow on Monday, but had been delayed, he said. “All of those crew had to use accommodation in Moscow before leaving,” Paulin said. “That obviously becomes a place and a time when they’re at greater risk. “We’ve looked to get rid of that day and make sure they continue to follow all the protocols.” However, a fisheries expert is

asking whether the economic benefit New Zealand receives from having overseas crew here is worth the risk they pose due to Covid-19. Dr Glenn Simmons said they should all be sent home. They did not bring enough money into the economy to justify the risk we were taking, illustrated by the two health workers taking the virus home with them after caring for

31 of the infected mariners, he said. “We send money overseas for the actual charter of these vessels and their wages are typically sent back to their home country. The species that they are harvesting is sent offshore semi-processed, and it’s reprocessed into value added products offshore, and we don’t capture that value either.”

The seven overseas-owned deep sea trawlers were chartered by three New Zealand companies, Sealord, Independent, and Maruha Nichiro. Paulin said while the low value species they caught were not processed in this country, there were other downstream benefits to New Zealand from having them here. “Stevedoring, provedoring, engineering services, cold storage, freight forwarders, transport companies, the port company.” Paulin said between them the seven boats brought in $725 million in revenue every year, and supported the jobs of 425 land-based locals. Over time Sealord had moved from having all boats crewed by foreigners to just two out of nine being manned in this way. Paulin said by the end of next year they would only be using one of them. “It really comes down to affordability for us, because it takes quite a bit of time to build. It’s like a two-year project to build a new deepwater fishing boat. And we’re very lucky we’ve got very supportive shareholders, who were happy to invest in replenishing our fleet.”

Valued Team brings Wealth of Experience

Three years ago, Brendon and Rochelle Mathews first opened The Bike Station in central Nelson and today the vibrant, expanding business has fantastic stock and a passionate, experienced team. Rochelle says contrary to what some may think, Ebikes aren’t a lazy option. “Ours are pedal-electric, so you still have to pedal but you get assistance as

you need it, so they’re suited to anyone, including those with a medical condition. “Using an E-bike allows me to get uphill quickly and ride for longer. They’re great enablers. I can do a

Staff are a massive part of The Bike Station. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here today,” Rochelle says. From the outset, Brendon and Rochelle have been focussed on having high-quality staff and, because they all have significant experience with bikes, the couple have 100% faith in their ability to provide fantastic service. Yohann, who is from the UK, says, “It’s been useful to experience how bike shops operate in other countries, including New Zealand. I picked Nelson because of its awesome mountainbiking trails and The Bike Station had cool brands, a nice workshop and it’s a great place to work.” Meanwhile, two-time national track cycling champion and national record

holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base. Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year. “I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.” Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.” Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland. “I started as a customer and ended up working here; I love the team; we all get on well. It’s always a good sign of a great workplace

If you are building or renovating, choosing the right builder is hugely important, someone you can trust and who has the expertise to do a great job. Marshall Builders, which is run by licensed building practitioner Steve Marshall, offers a wide variety of building, renovation and custom carpentry services across Nelson and Tasman. “Our vision is to create practical houses that are good quality, but still not unreachable for people as far as their budget goes,” says Steve. “We want our brand to be connected with quality, energy-efficiency and sustainability.” Marshall Builders likes to customise a build to the client’s requirements. “Often it’s those small things that can make a big difference.” General manager Lilly Minnich says people sometimes have the perception that the construction industry is a ‘little bit rough,’ an image they want to change. “We have created a great team culture where everybody is seen and valued, a caring family culture where we treat everyone really well and give them opportunities, a place

where they can bring an idea and it’s heard,” says Lilly. The positive team culture also has flow-on effects for the customers because it creates a good atmosphere and provides an exceptional building experience which goes ‘above and beyond.’ Steve has run his business for 10 years in the Nelson/Tasman region and has grown significantly this year, currently building ‘spec’ homes as well as houses for customers. “It’s really above standard; better insulation solutions, European tapware and appliances, thermally broken windows where possible, and so on, which really improves the overall quality of the home,” says Lilly. If you are contemplating building, Marshall Builders is taking inquiries in the lead-up to Christmas and has some capacity to take on new work next year. “Often we can also fit in smaller renovation jobs between builds,” says Steve. “Having a trusting relationship is really important to us.” Call Marshall Builders today on 03 265 5053. Excitement. That’s the buzz word surrounding the start of the Nelson Griffins’ season this month. A new coach, new captain and a slew of promising young prospects makes this year an intriguing one for the city’s premier cricket team. New skipper Ollie Jones-Allen says the team possesses more than enough firepower to make some serious waves this season. Returning to the squad are New Zealand U19 reps Finn Raxworthy and Thomas Zhorab, as well as Central Stag’s Greg Hay, Josh Clarkson and Felix Murray. “We have an awesome bunch of boys and it’s nice to have some quality players coming back and supporting our group.” Ollie says, while the side’s strength lies in its batting, there are plenty of quality bowlers in the ranks.

Tasman’s premiership defence is now under serious threat as Canterbury dominated the Mako across the park with the hosts kept scoreless against the red and blacks’ resolute defence. The loss was Tasman’s third of the season after going unbeaten in 2019, however they remain in second spot in what is quickly turning into the closest premiership battle for many seasons.

Although they face a tricky away match against Otago on Saturday, the Mako at least have their semifinal future in their own hands. Mako lock Quinten Strange said while Canterbury played well some of the damage was self-inflicted. “We were just one or two percent off tonight, in a few areas of the game we were our own worst enemy. “As we know, if you don’t turn up against Canterbury they are going to punish you.” And that they did, Saturday’s defeat ending an 11-game winning run at Lansdowne Park, with Tasman’s last defeat in Blenheim coming against Auckland in September 2015. Tasman toiled away bravely but simply couldn’t crack Canterbury’s rock-solid defensive line. The scoring slowed until the 77th

minute when replacement Isaiah Punivai hammered the final nail in with a bonus point try to conclude the dominant performance. Next Saturday afternoon sees the Mako go under the roof in Dunedin against Otago. “That’s the beauty of this competition, we have to make sure we get the right mindset heading into next weekend,” says Strange. Kick off is at 4.35pm. Scorers: Canterbury 29 (N. Punivai, McKay, Fihaki, I. Punivai, tries, Cameron 3 cons, 1 pen) Tasman 0

The Donaldson Civilsponsored Volkswagen was the starter car at the fireworks meeting. Emma Nell will be piloting “Herbie", joining 30 other cars hoping to take the chequered flag. Herbie is also part of the harvest series being raced in Blenheim over the summer. Donaldson’s have entered four cars - plus a couple of cars in the hands of a few regular participants making it a fun

Nelson Suburbs helping schools with gear Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Christmas came early for 27 local schools last week as Santa, in the form of Nelson Suburbs director of football Ryan Stewart, came bearing gifts across the city. Ryan brought sacks full of cones, bibs and balls on behalf of his club to primary and pre-schools. Tahunanui School sports coordinator Jacinda BeyerRieger says funding for sports

equipment is becoming increasingly difficult and the gift is greatly appreciated. “This is gold, it’s just brilliant.” She says students are out on the fields playing every day but are just as adept at losing footballs as they are at kicking them. “Plenty of the balls go missing. You have to scout around the field each day to make sure they aren’t left out; these will be put to very good use.” Ryan says he has seen a common trend at schools with cutbacks on sports gear.

“We have a lot of old stock and this is just a better way to reuse them and we hope it makes a difference for these schools.” He says it is all about connecting with the local community. “We are a team supported by the community so if we don’t give back then they are doing everything for us.” He says Nelson schools needing any form of help should not hesitate to contact the club. “We are here to give back, when people need us give us a call and we will do our best to help.”

Lowe set for Irish debut

Jonty Dine

James Lowe’s dream of playing international rugby is about to come true, almost 20,000km from where it began. The former Mako winger has been included in the Ireland squad for the inaugural Autumn Nations Cup meaning the 28-year-old could make his long-awaited debut against Wales in the tournament opener in Dublin on Friday. The dynamic winger made the move to Ireland’s most successful club in 2017 where he has developed cult hero status and became eligible through

the three-year residency rule. While on holiday in Nelson earlier this year, James told the Nelson Weekly it was a tough decision to leave New Zealand, but it was just too good of an opportunity to pass down. James played six caps for the New Zealand Maori between 201417 with the All Blacks having an embarrassment of riches out wide. “You had Julian Savea in his prime, Ben Smith breaking in, Waisake Naholo, Reiko Ioane, I just didn’t really put my hand up enough.” The closest James got to an All Black jersey was in 2015 against Samoa with a number of regulars on Super Rugby final duty, but

From your local Beekeeper

shoulder surgery ruled him out. James says while he has plenty of unfinished business in Ireland, he is hopeful of a homecoming at the end of his career. “I would still love to come home and play for Tassy for a year or so, that’s a long way down the track, and assuming the body holds together, but Nelson will always be home.” Ireland coach Andy Farrell told the team’s website: “I’m as keen as everyone to see how James goes at the international level. It is a different level, but we’ve seen the potential of what he shows for Leinster and how he has fitted into life in Ireland.”

s w e N g n i h s Fi Snapper are back Dominik Berghamer The snapper are back in the bay and for the next month or so they should be rather easy to catch! There is little doubt that Tamure are New Zealand’s most popular fish species, in regards to their outstanding sport fishing and eating qualities alike. Their English name is a bit misleading, they do not belong to the snapper family but are actually a type of sea bream. They are not picky and will eat almost anything that fits in their mouths. If it doesn’t, they will try to crush it to pieces that do. The jaws are strong enough to easily crack shellfish, snails and, a favourite, paddle crabs. Never ever stick a finger in a snapper’s mouth, they will crush it with ease! Worms, sea cucumbers, squid and small fish are also on the menu which explains why they can be caught on such a variety of baits and lures. About three weeks ago they arrived at the 40m mark and are moving into shallower depths as the water warms up. They are feeding voraciously to build up large amounts of roe and milt but they will go off the bite abruptly when they start spawning, usually around midDecember. This takes place on the surface, an aggregation of spawning snapper is a rare and spectacular sight! In the late 1970s people realised that they reproduced on the surface and commercial fishermen started to catch huge amounts

Kevin Barker is the first Kartsport Nelson member to win the coveted Jason Richards Grand Prix Trophy held last weekend. The trophy, named after the late racing legend, is awarded for both the best result and sportsmanship. Kevin won all the races on Saturday but, unfortunately, racing on Sunday was called off due to flooding on the track. Kevin says it was a massive honour and also quite an emotional one. “Especially with his parents there to present it.” Jason Richards was a famous New Zealand motor racing driver who tragically passed way in 2011 after a battle with cancer. Born in Nelson, Jason enjoyed a stellar racing career which included finishing second three times in Australasia’s most famous race, the Bathurst 1000. The win was vindication for Kevin who was in the box seat to win it last year but broke a chain just before the 40 lapper, which put him out. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport.

Tristan’s first snapper for the season. of spawning fish with trawl nets and purse seines. Within a couple of years, the numbers were reduced to a fraction and the snapper fishing collapsed. It took decades for the stock to recover a bit and only over the last 10 years or so the numbers increased substantially, probably due to a few good spawning years and a large influx of fish from the west coast of the Northern Island. After breeding the snapper will start biting again around midJanuary and will stay in the Bay for the summer. By the end of April they will again disappear into deeper waters. Tight lines!
