The creation of a $50 million gondola experience up Fringed Hill could be Nelson’s biggest and

most ambitious tourism project ever.

Recently released artist impressions of the newly renamed Koata Park project showcases the top station of the gondola, which will sit

630 metres above sea level and overlook the Maitai Valley and Nelson and Tasman Bays.

The proposal represents perhaps the city’s biggest ever development of its kind, a notion which is not lost on the

man tasked with bringing it to a reality.

Hemi Toia, chair of the park development company, revealed to the Nelson Weekly that the project is budgeted to cost between $45 and $50 million.

It has also been expanded from just an experience for mountain bikers to something that has a much broader audience, with conservation at its heart.

“This is ambitious, this is huge,” says Hemi. “But you’ve got to be ambitious and that’s why we have to have people from the Nelson region behind it.”

The development has been renamed Koata Park to recognise Ngati Koata as the landowner and to better reflect the focus on the local nature and cultural experience.

Hemi says they have already raised $8 million from the iwi and other investors and now they were looking for more people and organisations to throw their money behind the project.

“It is a city investment; this is not a Koata project it’s a project, of the city. It needs to be viewed that way.”

The idea for a gondola in Nelson has been around for many years, since first being floated by the Nelson Cycle Lift Society. Three

An economic impact assessment released last year, before Ngati Koata’s expanded concept, said total value added from the project was estimated to be $3.8 million for year one increasing

to $7.3 million at year ten. The report also said that the proposed attraction would achieve at least 160,000 visits per year after ten years’ operation.

“There is the realistic potential for the attraction to reach close to 200,000 visits after ten years.”

The gondola would be 1.3km long and take about five minutes to reach the top. The development would be designed to have broad appeal for

visitors of all ages and expectations with magnificent 230-degree views from the mountains, over the city and out to the sea.

“It’s going to take time and a lot of money,” Hemi says. “It’s not about getting it done quickly, it’s about getting it done right.”

He says that there was still la resource consent process to go through but optimistically hoped to be building by 2021.

Swimming to evade police was ‘silly’, says judge

A man who jumped into the sea on Rocks Road in an attempt to evade police did so because he panicked and thought he would go to jail.

Kane Cameron Hippolite, 29, pleaded guilty to charges of failing to remain stopped for police and driving while disqualified, in the Nelson District Court on Monday.

The charges relate to an incident on October 3 when Hippolite was driving towards Nelson on Rocks Rd with a passenger who was not wearing a seatbelt.

The police summary of facts says the car was unwarranted, did not have current registration and had been previously ordered off the road because of cracks in the windscreen.

A marked police car that was travelling behind the Toyota Altezza activated its lights in an effort to get the car to pull over, which it did after a couple of hundred metres.

He then swam the majority of the way to Haulashore Island before being pulled from the water by police search and rescue in coordination with the coastguard.

He was arrested once aboard the vessel.

In explanation Hippolite told police he panicked as he feared he was going to jail.

Judge Richard Russell did not

enter a conviction as he was expecting an application to be made for Hippolite to serve a community-based detention rather than have further disqualification period imposed.

“It’s a silly thing you did jumping into the sea and trying to swim away from police, you could’ve drowned.

“If you don’t want to be disqualified, the singular worst thing you could do is get in a car and be found driving.”

Hippolite was remanded on bail to appear on January 13.

Local health board NEWS failed cancer patient Sara Hollyman

Nelson Marlborough Health should have reacted quicker to signs a woman who had undergone bowel surgery was deteriorating, the Health and Disability Commissioner has found.

A 65-year-old woman died after complications following bowel surgery, which prompted a formal complaint against the regional health board.

In a recent decision, Health and Disability Commissioner Anthony Hill said the Nelson Marlborough Health should have reacted more quickly to signs the woman was deteriorating following surgery and provided treatment which could have saved her life.

The patient, referred to in the decision as Mrs B, was admitted to hospital in 2014 for bowel surgery following radiation treatment for bowel cancer.

The report says “although the procedure appeared to have gone well, Mrs B’s condition deteriorated” after the operation.

Four days later she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit where she died that afternoon, following a diagnosis of acute respiratory distress.

A post-mortem found the cause of death was pneumonia due to aspiration.

A day after her surgery it was reported she was recovering well, however, that afternoon Mrs B was beginning to show signs of constipation and intolerance to oral intake.

The next day the woman experienced vomiting and abdominal distension.

On day five her condition worsened, and she was transferred to the ICU where she died at 4.33pm.

Hill found the DHB failed to pick up the earlier signs and therefore did not provide the appropriate treatment quick enough.

He said the hospital should have investigated whether the high white cell count was a sign of infection and criticised staff for not considering the possibility of inserting a nasogastric tube on the morning that the woman was transferred to ICU with breathing problems.

“I am concerned that this did not occur,” Hill said.

Further concerns about the care she received while in ICU were also raised and found there had been a delay in escalating her care to the consultant anaesthetist.

Hill also found that invasive ventilation

should have been implemented sooner when it was clear that the woman was experiencing severe respiratory failure.

In response to the findings that Nelson Marlborough District Health Board was in breach of the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights, the DHB has provided a written apology to the woman’s family.

It has also produced new clinical guidance on non-invasive positive pressure ventilation and provided the commissioner with a copy.

The woman’s daughter-in-law, who laid the complaint, was given opportunity to comment on Hill’s provisional opinion.

She stated that several nurses told her that she should complain, and she found this distressing as it indicated to her that NMDHB seemed to rely on “the people most vulnerable” to report problems, and did not have an adequate system for selfinvestigation to regulate itself without a logged complaint.

Council comms shakeup: Long time Nelson City Council communications manager Paul Shattock is leaving the team to take up a new role at the organisation.

He is moving to become the manager of community engagement, which was earmarked in last year’s annual plan. This looks to work across the organisation with a focus on capital projects “to make sure that the community has the opportunity to engage better with council”. He says the role will look to upskill the wider organisation on how to better engage with stakeholders.

Recruitment for Paul’s replacement is underway, as well as another communications adviser to replace a staff member who recently left. Earlier in the year another senior adviser role was also created.

Nelson organisations receive funding: Nelson organisations have received almost $200,000 from the New Zealand Community Trust in their latest round of funding. The largest grant of $70,000 was awarded to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust which will go towards operating costs. Following closely was a $69,000 grant which went to the Tasman Regional Sports Trust. The Tasman Wheelers received $14,230 for a new timing system. Nelson Volunteer Coastguard received a $25,000 boost for their replacement rescue boat. They need to raise $ 1 million by the end of the year to be able to place an order for the $1.3m custom built, heavy weather rescue vessel.

Recent changes to the Navigation Safety Bylaw have left some Nelson boat owners struggling to catch up on the rules.

The bylaw was reviewed earlier this year, and, from 1 October, vessels over six metres in length must be registered with Nelson City Council - unless the identification is a Yachting NZ or affiliated club registration or the vessel’s trailer registration number.

If your boat is less than six metres, it doesn’t need to be registered - but it does need the owner’s name and contact details displayed above the waterline on each side of the vessel.

“This is so that, in the event of a mishap, we know how to contact the boat’s owner,” says Clare Barton, group manager environmental management at council.

There is no cost to register your vessel and it can be done online at www.nelson.govt.nz/vesselregistration The changes apply to visitors in the area, too.

The council consulted with the public on the changes back in July, and Clare says there is a focus on improving the safety of people in Nelson’s marine environment.

“The amendments have been made based on local safety checks and evidence gathered throughout the country on the causes of marine accidents.”

Descendants of New Zealand’s first Chinese immigrant, Appo Hocton, have spent almost two years trying to get a local pathway named after the early settler.

Alvin Schroder was bemused to find there was not a single street, pathway, park or reserve named after his great grandfather, who became a well-known businessman and personality around Nelson.

So, he and his family set about getting a previously unnamed pathway, which joins Pioneer Crescent with Valley Heights Rd, officially named after the first Chinese man in New Zealand to be naturalised.

Appo arrived in Nelson on board the Thomas Harrison, where he worked as a steward, on October 25, 1842.

When the ship left on November 10, Appo was not onboard, he had instead been hiding in the hills of Moana.

Valley, and built several houses in Hastings St, owning one and leasing the others.

Living in Washington Valley, Alvin knew of a pathway that had remained unnamed for years, and the location happened to be right on Appo’s doorstep.

“My wife and I walk around there and saw the path with no name and thought ‘that’s a bit silly’, his property backed right on to it,” says Alvin.

In 2017, Alvin’s wife Priscilla lodged an application with Nelson City Council to get

the ‘accessway’ named.

Nearly two years later on September 5, 2019 it finally came before council in a hearings panel meeting and, after a slow but successful process, it was approved.

Alvin and his family had agreed to front up with the costs of the two signs, about $500 each, to get it across the line.

The agenda from the September NCC meeting stated that Appo Hocton’s descendants had been in contact with Council for “more

than a decade” with the aim of seeing him commemorated through an appropriate naming opportunity”.

Then, on October 11, the day before Alvin’s 78th birthday, his determination finally paid off with the erection of two brand-new street signs officially naming Appo Hocton Way. The Schroder family say they feel immensely proud that there is now a landmark which recognises their ancestor, who is thought to have 1500 descendants.

Could clearways help Nelson’s transport woes?

Transport was a contentious issue during the election campaign with clearways raised as a potential solution to Nelson’s congestion. Sara Hollyman speaks to an expert urban designer to find out whether they would help our city.

For growing cities, clearways for general traffic will only ever provide a temporary reprieve from congestion, says Kent Lundberg.

“As traffic capacity is increased more people will choose to drive eventually, eroding any congestion benefits,” he says.

Clearways were raised by mayoral candidates at the Nelson Weekly debate as being a possible solution to Nelson’s traffic woes, while the Nelson Future Access investigation is underway. That investigation will report back next year about whether the city need a new arterial route to help solve congestion.

But Auckland-based Kent, who is one of the country’s leading urban transport planners, says it’s usually intersections and their approaches that are the constraint, not the sections of road in between. He says that clearways can often have negligible benefit, or make congestion worse, if they just force more traffic into the same intersections.

He says, while the first traffic lane can carry between 800-900

cars per hour, adding a clearway lane won’t add the same capacity again. Instead, it will add only a few hundred cars, or sometimes zero.

In fact, Kent says, depending on their location, clearways may exacerbate traffic problems.

“Clearways make it hard to cross the street on foot. This can be a big problem on routes to and from schools, where you end up with more parents driving their kids to school because it is too dangerous to cross the street.”

However, Kent says adding a bus only clearway lane can provide extra capacity for thousands of people per hour.

“Providing bus-only clearways or priority measures for buses helps to make public transport an attractive alternative to driving.

Unlike providing space for cars, bus priority is a virtuous cycle.”

He says freeing up buses from traffic delays means that public transport services can run more for the same cost.

“And as more people use the service, it’s cheaper to run making it

“This is basically how Auckland has been addressing growth around the city centre for more than a decade. On constrained corridors, bus lanes and bus priority measures have enabled the city centre to grow rapidly while not adding additional traffic capacity,” he says.

Returning Nelson City councillor Matt Lawrey says Kent presents two important ideas.

“The first is that increased capacity,... will only temporarily reduce congestion.

“We’ve actually seen this happen

in Stoke. When Whakatu Drive was built, the idea was it would reduce congestion on Main Rd Stoke. For a while it did but today the traffic through Stoke is back up to the levels we saw before the bypass was built.”

Matt says creating a clearway that can be used by buses could create extra capacity for thousands of travellers.

Nelson MP Nick Smith says he’s not surprised that a traffic expert thinks that clearways are only a short-term solution. He says they are risky from a safety perspective and they have huge downsides for

neighbouring home owners as they eliminate car parking.

“Clearways are a really poor solution for Nelson’s transport issues. People often mistakenly leave their cars in the clearway, which has led to serious accidents and even deaths in Wellington.

“Clear ways in Nelson would costs tens of millions of dollars. Nelson is better to work on the longterm solution of the Southern Link which would complete the roading network. I’m supportive of buses but people are dreaming if they think it will be the solution to traffic in Nelson.”

Finding a home for Rebekah Locally Owned and Operated

Rebekah Smith is in limbo.

She moved into her Bishopdale unit three years ago after struggling to find somewhere suitable. Rebekah uses a wheelchair after living with Multiple Sclerosis for many years.

She managed to kick the disease into remission thanks to stem cell therapy, but its aftereffects were lingering. Neurological damage to her spine means she cannot bear any weight on her legs.

Now, add to that, the stress of trying to find somewhere to live. Several weeks ago, her landlord said they needed to sell her unit.

“They had a change in their situation which means it sucks for me,” she says. “There is nothing out there.”

Rebekah says the housing market is horrific enough without having to find somewhere that is wheelchairfriendly.

“Or even modifiable.”

The landlord did offer the one-and-a-half-bedroom unit

She is only on a supported living wage through Work and Income.

“I’ve tried everything.”

She has gone to various housing organisations, but she doesn’t seem to quality for them. She is on the waitlist for state housing and emergency housing.

“If I was kicked out tomorrow, I don’t know where I would go.”

She would prefer not to move but realises that the odds are stacked against her. Rebekah needs to stay in Nelson because of her health but is looking for help anywhere she can get it.

She is now on a periodic lease from which allows her to be given 21 days’ notice at any point. It is likely that the unit will be listed publicly this weekend, but Rebekah is not giving up.

“I just have to keep trying.”

Nelson Surf Life Saving held an open day on Sunday to encourage new members to sign up. Organisation vice president Stu Edens says it’s also a great opportunity to show the community what they do.

They are the protective covers we place over the fuses that connect the underground power cables to the service cables conveying electricity to your house or business. As these boxes have live electrical components inside them, it’s important for public safety that they have securely fitted covers.

We have about 12,000 underground boxes on our network, most of them in urban areas. As they are generally in public spaces they sometimes get damaged when: z

vehicles accidentally run into them, causing the cover to loosen or crack

people drill holes or insert screws into them

some have their covers removed by people not authorised to do so.

These are all dangerous situations, as they can expose you to the live electrical parts inside the box and put you at risk of electrocution.

If a box gets repeatedly damaged by vehicles, we will look at putting protective bollards around it.

Underground boxes must be left alone and only networkapproved contractors are permitted to remove the covers.

Putting screws into an underground box or drilling holes into one is extremely dangerous! If anything ever causes you to need to interact with a box please phone us.

Thousands turned out to witness the 25th Mask Parade in action on Sunday. The parade, which was postponed after heavy rain on Friday, is the largest walking parade in the Southern Hemisphere. Hope School claimed the title of Best School Group and took out the top prize of the Kim Merry Supreme Award.

Getting artsy for sea scouts

A lineup of unlikely artists has created a series of works to help get a team of local sea scouts to Jamboree 2020 in Hamilton.

From the Prime Minister to a former All Black, the prominent personalities donated their doodles for a silent auction raising funds for the Iron Duke Sea Scout Group.

Fundraising committee member Angela Craig and chairperson Nathalie Campbell were tasked with signing up celebrities for the cause.

The pair started by emailing Jacinda Ardern’s office and, to their surprise, received a reply within an hour.

They then went on to get Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese, National party leader Simon Bridges, former All Black Wyatt Crockett, World of Wearable Art founder Dame Suzie Moncrieff, Nelson MP Nick Smith, owner of Pic’s Peanut Butter Pic Picot and junior Tall Black Max Darling on board.

“The theme was open-ended, we got a bit of everything,” Angela says.

New airport ‘magnificent’ Jonty Dine Reporter

Nelson Airport’s new terminal reflects what Nelson is as a region, says Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

“It’s a magnificent place, and that’s not something you can say about all New Zealand terminals,” she told the airport’s official opening on Saturday.

Jacinda says she loves airports, not because of the planes but because of the people.

“It’s a symbol of connection and lets us maintain links with one another which is vital to our prosperity and well-being.”

She says the terminal is a place that visitors will remember and Nelsonians can take pride in.

Designed by Studio Pacific Architecture and built by Naylor Love, in partnership with Gibbons Construction and Fulton Hogan, the airport terminal caters for growth in excess of 50 per cent of the current one million passengers who have passed through the facility in the last year.

More than twice the size of the previous terminal, the new building has an indoor luggage carousel and offers more seating, airline lounges,

The number of car parks has also increased , from 600 to 900.

The new building has a distinctive local feel, with most of the timber and steel used in the construction sourced from Nelson Tasman.

Air New Zealand head of tourism and regional affairs Reuben Levermore says the new terminal is fantastic for the airline and the entire region.

“Nelson has become a key port on the Air New Zealand network. Over the past five years, seats on our services have increased by more than 140,000 on Nelson routes, strongly supporting the case for a redeveloped terminal.”

He says the terminal will provide an excellent experience for customers and sets the airport up well for future growth.

“We’re also looking forward to opening a new Air New Zealand regional lounge at Nelson Airport before Christmas.”

Nelson Airport chief executive Rob Evans says the Nelson Airport continues to expand its services and increase its contribution to the region.

“The airport is the gateway to Nelson Tasman and has an important role in the region’s development and prosperity.”

The airport supports more than 30 businesses that contribute more than $80 million to the region’s GDP and employs 1,500 people.

“What’s most exciting is that the new terminal sets us up to welcome more passengers to our fast-growing region and keeps us moving towards not just being the most popular region, but to be the best regional airport in New Zealand.”

Christine rubs shoulders with A-listers: Local author Christine Leunens has just returned from Hollywood where she attended the premiere of Jojo Rabbit. The film, created by Taika Waititi, was an adaptation of her book Caging Skies. She joined the cast, which includes Scarlet Johansson and Sam Rockwell, on the red carpet, as well as other born and bred Nelsonian Carthew Neal, who was the film’s producer. The film premieres in Nelson tonight.

Suter celebrates birthday, Wednesday, October 2: The Suter Art Gallery celebrated 120 years on Saturday, 5 October, and staff member Maria Anderson says there was “a real sense of occasion and ceremony” at the event. “A crowd

gathered in the foyer for the cutting of a cake and complimentary tea was served by Bishop Suter and his wife Amelia in fitting attire, with three-year-old Maia Brown assisting with proceedings. Behind the scenes tours were on offer and floor talks presented by the director, educator and curator were well received by an appreciative audience”.

My pleasure at the Mako win in Blenheim was soured driving home as I carefully assessed the proposed speed limit changes on the route. The reduction in the speed limit from 100kmph to 80 kmph on open straight stretches like from Renwick to Havelock, Havelock to Pelorous Bridge and through the Collins Valley are ridiculous.

This is all part of the Government’s anti-car crusade led by

Green Party Minister Julie Anne Genter. They have increased fuel taxes three times, proposed new taxes on cars, slashed the annual investment on our state highways by 70% and are now radically reducing speed limits. I was appalled at the mind-set of Ms Genter referring to motorists as “car fascists”.

The most sensible initiative we could make to improve the safety of the Nelson-Blenheim highway is additional passing lanes.

I am a big fan of the electronic variable school zone signs being proposed for Hira and Canvastown schools. They are a smart approach that dramatically reduce speed for the 30 minutes at the time when schools starts and ends. It maximises safety for children while enabling freer traffic flows during the bulk of the time. The biggest cause of increases in our road toll has been drug impaired driving that now exceeds drunk driving. Minister Genter has a blind spot on drugged driving and has repeat-

edly rejected efforts by police, transport officials and myself to introduce random roadside drug testing. We also need to do better in tackling driver distractions like cellphone use ahead of across the board speed limit reductions. These big cuts in speed limits between Nelson and Blenheim are over the top.

‘Grounding’ performance at Founders Park Kate Russell

Bungee-assisted dance will meet with landscape design in a free outdoor performance at Founders Heritage Park this week.

As part of the Nelson Arts Festival, ‘Herelessness’ will see two talented locals come together for a one of a kind, mixed-media performance.

Critically-acclaimed choreographer Chloe Loftus and award-winning designer James Wheatley have

combined their experiences to explore the vitality, grounding and power harnessed through our connection with nature.

Set among a New Zealand landscape created by James they are being assisted by sound engineer Tym Miller-White.

‘Herelessness’ starts Thursday, 24 October and runs until Sunday, 27 October at Founders Heritage Park.

All performances start at 8:30pm and run for approximately 20 minutes. Entry is free.

Thousands of books may not have been in good enough condition to sell at the Founders Book Fair, but they are still being put to good use.

Pre-loved Encyclopedia Britannicas, dictionaries and more have taken on a new life as building blocks for a sculpture at the home of the popular book bonanza.

The man behind the idea is Nelson artist Lee Woodman, who is creating a derelict colonial cottage for the Nelson Arts Festival, called ‘If walls could talk’.

“Charlie Unwin [festival director] approached me with the brief of creating something using recycled material. Then, I saw the books at Founders,” he says.

“I’m a builder by trade and books are a building blocks of

Over the course of the festival, Lee will be making his way through six apple bins full to create his masterpiece - that’s around 3000 books.

He says the idea is inspired by a small cottage that has been left to fall apart, with the chimney

and attached gable end being the last to fall. Lee started on Saturday and will be working on the sculpture on the main grass area at Founders Heritage Park.

If it rains, there may be a few swollen books on show, but Lee says that’s all part of the charm.

You can see Lee working on the sculpture from 1-8pm every day until 28 October.

Mako steams into historic final Jonty Dine and Peter Jones

Mako fans were reminded of what NPC play-off rugby is all about at Lansdowne Park on Saturday.

And it wasn’t pretty.

The Mitre 10 Cup premiership semi-final, won 18-9 by Tasman, turned into a war of attrition, ultimately decided by a couple of moments of brilliance by the home side.

Auckland came to Blenheim stung by a 40-0 reversal in roundrobin play, with a plan to negate Tasman’s traditional strengths and it nearly worked.

For three quarters of the match they held onto possession, slowed down any ball Tasman managed to get their hands on and pressurised the home side into errors of judgement and discipline.

However, the one thing the defending champs couldn’t do was forge a decent lead, thus putting the home side under scoreboard pressure.

Tasman survived the intense

semi-final encounter which saw the side lose three key players but ensured its unprecedented season will continue.

The Mako were rattled in the first forty, finding themselves on the wrong side of the referee and scoreboard.

Tasman was dealt two cruel blows inside the opening quarter with Ethan Blackadder dislocating his shoulder and taken from the field.

His replacement Jordan Taufua didn’t last either after being knocked out while attempting to clear a ruck.

Their woes were compounded as Auckland put first points on the board through the boot of Harry Plummer.

Mitch Hunt uncharacteristically missed a regulation penalty to respond but the fly-half made amends with his side’s first clean break leading to him squaring the scores after 37 minutes.

The hosts finally took the lead right on half-time with Hunt’s second penalty, but the half belonged to

the defending champions.

Auckland again made a superior start in the second as Plummer evened the honours again at 6-all.

The casualty ward kept growing as did the frustrations for Tasman, losing Will Jordan to a knee injury.

Auckland were then denied a spectacular try thanks to a single blade of grass with the game starting to open up.

An Alex Nankivell brain fade handed Auckland a chance to reclaim the lead with the in-form mid-fielder pinged for a blatant late shot, but Plummer pushed his attempt wide.

Hunt missed his second penalty, but a turning point was around the corner.

Replacement Fetuli Paea exploded through the Auckland defence and was brought down metres short of the chalk.

But a rampaging Quentin Strange was on hand to score the game’s first try as Lansdowne Park erupted in elation.

The nerves were getting to both teams, Auckland making a simple error in front of its own posts to set the Mako right back on attack.

Another miss by Hunt kept Auckland alive but the game was put to bed thanks to an outstanding run by replacement

hooker Hugh Roach.

Skipper David Havili remained composed and linked up with Nankivell who sealed a famous win.

The unbeaten Mako will now meet Wellington in the final at Trafalgar Park on Saturday.

World-class riders to roll into region

Nelson will this week play host to some of the best mountainbikers in the world.

The Enduro Series sees riders take on the greatest trails on the planet and the next round is set to be hosted by the Nelson Mountain Bike Club.

From October 26-28, hundreds of riders from Europe, Asia, America and across New Zealand will compete in the first round of the Enduro AsiaPacific series.

The region has the opportunity to showcase its stunning natural landscapes of lakes, mountains, rivers, native bush and beaches as riders will soak up the spectacular scenery along the tracks.

Club administrator Belinda Crisp says the event will double as a dress rehearsal as Nelson has made its bid to also host the World Enduro Series in 2020.

“The committee will be looking at this event really closely. If we do a good job it would bode well.”

She says preparations are all under control and the heavy rain that has fallen recently won’t hamper competition.

“The weather is looking good, the track is a bit tacky because of

‘Geezer’ Tom lights up team’s bowling attack Jonty Dine Reporter

Affectionately known as ‘geezer’ or ‘the pom,’ Stoke/Nayland has added another weapon to its already formidable arsenal in the form of English bowler Tom Chambers.

The 20-year-old seamer from Weston-super-Mare, in Somerset, has joined the Nelson champions as they chase an unprecedented fourth consecutive title this season.

Tom had a dramatic start to his overseas stint as Stoke and Athletic Old Boys played out and epic tie in round one of the Tasman Premier League.

Batting first, the defending champions posted 262 before ACOB reached the total.

“It was an incredible start,” Tom says.

The result evoked memories of England’s incredible super over win against New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup final earlier this year.

“I have been using it to ruffle a few feathers, but everyone’s been in good spirit about it.”

England will be in Nelson in November to play the Black Caps in a T20I. “I will definitely try get some tickets and time off work,” Tom says. “Hopefully they do the same again.”

Cricket is entrenched in Tom’s family with his grandad a former president of Westonsuper-Mare.

“I was always around the club and then at about nine decided to start playing.”

His short career has seen him rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in the game.

Tom’s side enjoyed an annual fixture against the Lashings World XI, the ‘Harlem Globetrotters of Cricket.’

He has played against the likes of former English players Simon Jones, Geraint Jones and off-spinner Monty Panesar.

“He got a few beers in him and got very chatty by the end of it, was a good time.”

Tom says, to go from watching those legends on TV to playing with them was amazing.

The fast bowler was brought to Nelson thanks to his connection

with Stoke/Nayland’s Patrick Howes who spent time playing with Tom in England.

“I told him ‘if you ever need an extra player to keep me in mind’ and the offer came up this year. Luckily, I was in between work contracts at the time, so it was a perfect opportunity.”

He was given the rundown of Stoke’s incredible run of form in recent years.

“They told me about the various trophies they’ve won so will try and keep that standard and hopefully do the same again this year.”

Tom says he has been received very warmly in the region.

“Nelson is incredible, everyone is so friendly and welcoming, it’s very different to back home.”

During his time in Nelson, Tom will be working at window manufacturing company, Insight.

He says he has no desire to become a professional cricketer.

“I’ve always just played for fun, and it’s managed to bring me out to New Zealand to make friends for life and, hopefully, come back in the future.”

The catches are still inconsistent but we had quite a few reports of snapper being caught in various locations. The big moochers seem to move into the shallows first, now is the time to go after this trophy fish on your bucket list!

Traditional hot spots at this time of the year are the middle of the Bay between 30 and 40 metres and shallower waters off Rabbit Island and Delaware Bay. Timing is essential, early mornings with a lot of current flowing seem to yield the best results.

Using burley is a double-edged sword, it certainly attracts snapper but also a lot of undesirables like red cod and spiny dogfish.

Especially the latter can turn up in hundreds and spoil your fun thoroughly. If that happens you can try fishing through the school but sometimes a change of location or drift fishing with

lures or heavy sinkers are the only options left.

If the sharks are not too bad, be patient and try different baits on flasher rigs and stray lines.

Bigger baits usually catch bigger fish and using crabs as bait attracts fewer sharks.

Light but high-quality gear increases your chances significantly, snapper can be very cautious. Make sure you check your leader after every fish, especially if you hooked a shark, their sandpaper like skin can damage the line easily. If in doubt, replace it, you don’t want to lose that fish of a lifetime because of a pesky shark!

The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club will hold their annual “Goldfish vs Sharks” competition at the end of the month where male and female members compete with each other. The boys are eager to make last year’s crushing defeat forgotten but according to the girls the chances are slim…

Nelson’s tranquil waters are a paddler’s paradise.

From waka ama to kayaking, paddle sports are surging in popularity and the region has become a hotspot.

So, in what is hoped to be the first of many more to come, Nelson will host a paddle sport festival on Labour weekend.

‘Paddlefest’ will get underway on October 26 with hundreds of paddlers expected to descend on Tahunanui Beach.

Nelson stand up paddleboard club president Rod King says Tahunanui is perfect for paddling.

“We get that year-round ability, no wind and a flat sea.”

Nelson has a proud history in paddlesports, with New

Zealand SUP beach sprint champion Tara Hope in its ranks.

Rod says the hope is to unite the various paddling disciplines for a weekend of races and events.

“There are a few other groups around, so we want to try get them all together.”

The weekend will feature SUP, surfski, and waka ama relays, long distance and sprint races.

Another highlight will be races for juniors (8 to 11) on inflatable SUP boards through the Maitai River.

Rod says planning for the event started in April.

“It’s amazing how much work has gone in; without our volunteer committee we couldn’t have got it done.

He says Nelson has thrown their support behind the concept.

“We have been promoting it

across Wellington and the South Island and have got a heap of local businesses involved.”

Rod says they plan to start small and expand.

“It’s one of those things, we’ve never done it before but are exceeding expectations with interest.”

The hope is locals will turn out in droves once the weather plays its part.

There will be spot prizes for those that take part including leashes, PFDs, paddles and even an inflatable paddleboard.

Paddlers can pay $25 to enter any race or relay during the three-day event.

Season over for Mako women Locally Owned and Operated

Peter Jones Despite being well beaten in their final game of the season the Tasman Mako women’s side have made “massive strides,” according to head coach Chris Binns.

Tasman were beaten 64-10 by the Otago Spirit side in a Farah Palmer Cup championship semifinal at Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday.

Binns said that while his charges had not played to their full potential they had come up against a very good side, who he feels will go on to take out the title.

Otago had too much pace out wide for Tasman and scored five first-half tries to lead 35-0, then added another touchdown soon after the break.

Tasman then managed to build some pressure of their own and were rewarded with two second half tries, to Sydnee Wilkins and Rebecca Kersten.

Otago first five-eighth Rosie Kelly had a big game, scoring two tries and drilled seven conversions in a 24-point haul.

For Tasman, debutante Jess Harvey, just 16, impressed off the bench, as did the propping duo of Louise Nalder and Paris Hart, plus loose forward

Victory boxers claim more gold A pair of Nelson’s most promising young boxers made a big impact at the Wellington Hutt Valley Novice Championships last week.

Victory Boxers Ashley Belk and Paddy Baker both won their respective divisions inside the ring on Saturday.

Ashley won the female elite 54kg Wellington/Hutt Valley Championship, claiming every

round of her bout with a Palmerston North opponent.

The diminutive dancer fought twice in the day, winning her semi-final in the morning before the main event.

Paul Hampton says the 24-year-old was superb in both fights.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Paddy won a unanimous decision against his New Plymouth opponent to win the cadet male 75kg title.

Hannah Beech also turned in a solid shift.

Winger Kersten was outstanding, as was Wilkins and midfielder Jess Drummond.

Binns suggested his side may have played their semi-final the previous week, when they beat North Harbour in a quarterfinal.

“That meant a lot to them, to actually make the semi, and maybe today was just a step too far, at the moment.

“We were a little flat to start with and built into the game, but we were well and truly outplayed.”

The loss of key players Wai Greig and Pippa Andrews through injury did not help Tasman’s cause but their teammates stepped up.

“They were naturally disappointed to lose today but are a really good bunch and the most were happy with their season,” said Binns.

“We have made some massive strides this year, now the challenge for us as a management group is to put some planning in place that allows them to take bigger steps next year.”

A major plus for the Tasman side was the opportunity to play under the roof at Forsyth Barr.

“The girls loved that,” he added.

“The facilities were amazing, it’s not every day that you get to play in such a facility.”

Speedway postponed: The Nelson Speedway Association has decided to postpone this weekend’s Coca-Cola Fireworks Extravaganza at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway for seven days. Association president Wayne Martin made the decision with the Tasman Mako hosting the Mitre 10 Cup final at Trafalgar Park against Wellington on Saturday, night which would have directly clashed with the event. The event will now be held on Saturday November 2 with the rest of the season’s calendar unaffected by the move.

Tasman women claim SI golf title Peter Jones Tasman made the most of home course advantage to pull off a history-making victory in the South Island Interprovincial golf championships over the weekend.

For the first time, Tasman were crowned South Island champions, shading golfing powerhouse Canterbury by half a point during a gripping final day on the Marlborough Golf Club course at Fairhall.

The competition involved eight-person teams from Tasman, Aorangi, Otago and Canterbury doing battle on Saturday and Sunday in a match play format. Each player contested two games each on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Tasman met Otago first up on Saturday, followed by Canterbury in the afternoon, then Aorangi on Sunday morning.

After the three rounds were concluded Tasman, Canterbury and Aorangi finished with two points each. Tasman beat Otago 6-2, Aorangi 7-1 and lost 3-5 to Canterbury.

However, Tasman won on a countback of individual games, having won 16 times, compared with Canterbury’s 15.5 and Aorangi’s 10. Otago finished without a win.

Tasman No 3 and captain Emily Stenhouse and number four Amber Boyce were both square with their Aorangi rivals going down the 18th but produced some solid golf to pick up vital wins which ultimately made the difference.

Nelson’s Eve Clarke, Stenhouse, from the Marlborough club, and Karamea’s Jean Gibson won all three of their games.

Stenhouse was thrilled to come out on top and said neither she nor Boyce knew that the overall result hinged on their final holes against Aorangi.

“We weren’t sure that we needed to win on the 18th … we were just excited that we had won our matches, then someone told us that we had won overall, so that was pretty

cool.”

Tasman broke a 33-year drought at the prestigious event, which has been running since 1986.

Stenhouse said there was no doubt home course advantage played a big part in the result.

“Just knowing the course helps and we had a few supporters down there too, club members and others from around the area.

“It’s a great team. We all get on amazingly well and we have a good team culture.”
