Following that outbreak, fires broke out at Rabbit Island, Atawhai, Moutere Hill and Dovedale Hill, costing Fire and Emergency NZ about $13 million in total.

With that in mind, principal rural fire officer Ian Reade is urging locals to take extra care.

Thousands stream into city of Bay Dreams

Nelson was alive with 20,000 punters who descended on the city to attend one of the hottest music festivals in the country. The second Bay Dreams concert saw some of the biggest acts in the world perform for a day-long event at Trafalgar Park. “As the fire risk climbs and you are working or playing in the outdoors, take note of your surroundings.”

He says grass is starting to dry out and has reached the point where in parts of the district at least 50 per cent is dead or dried out.

“At the 50 per cent level a fire will carry through the grass on a warm, dry day,” Ian says. “As the grass continues to dry, the risk of ignition from sparks or hot surfaces such as exhaust pipes increases.”

In early January the fire danger is moderate on cooler calm days and high on windy days.

Already this year fire crews have battled blazes in rural parts of the region. On January 2, a mystery fire in Kahurangi National Park took seven hours

for firefighters to extinguish due to the difficult terrain they were in.

Ian says if you are on or in dry vegetation there are some things you can do to minimize your risk.

“If it’s hot and dry and you are doing spark-hazardous work where anything metal may hit metal or stone, hot exhausts in long grass, electric fences through dry vegetation, try and do it in the morning when there is dew on the ground or late in the evening.”

He says the riskiest time for an ignition is 11am through to 7pm when temperature is high and humidity is low.

Waimea Rd crash brings heroes together Jonty Dine An unlikely trio of heroes helped save a man’s life following a highspeed crash on Waimea Rd. With little regard for their own safety, the three Nelsonians joined forces to help extinguish the car after it ignited and then free the trapped driver on Sunday night.

It was a narrow escape for both the driver and occupants of the house, which he missed by mere metres.

Veteran firefighter Rob Appleton was getting ready for bed when he heard what he knew was a bad crash.

Running to the scene, Rob’s brain went into work mode and he started to assess the situation.

“I was expecting there to be deaths.”

Rob says it was a miracle the driver was able to ‘thread the needle’ between the two houses.

One of those houses was Nelson MP Nick Smith who said that his daughter was home and got “an awful fright” but thankfully no one was hurt.

After Rob tumbled down the roadside, cutting his hand and getting stabbed in the hip by debris on the way down, he went about rescuing the trapped driver.

“I felt pretty naked initially because I’m used to having a truck with equipment and a team of firefighters but, in this case, I just mobilised the citizens. A lot of the neighbours were down trying to help.”

A neighbour handed Rob a knife as he proceeded to cut the driver free.

The man walked from the wreckage with little more than a few cuts and bruises and police say they are continuing their enquiries.

Chanelle Tahu witnessed the crash as she was driving her friend home and was first on the scene.

She says the car flipped through the air and landed upside down on the bank, taking out everything in its path.

Chanelle pulled over and rushed to help the driver while her friend called the emergency services.

“I thought he was dead, but then I saw the fire and heard someone screaming.”

After getting the children clear of the wreckage, Chanelle started to panic.

Thankfully, she was joined by ‘the most legend of legends’ in the form of Kirk Waho.

Kirk thought his house was being burgled when he heard the thunderous bang.

Once he realised a car had landed in his backyard, he sprang into action.

“I just jumped in there and just done what I could do.”

Kirk controlled the fire as Rob proceeded to cut the driver free, burning his hand on the exhaust in the process.

“I was on the car, and I’m just thinking ‘it’s going to blow’. I was worried, but we couldn’t just let him die so did what we had to do.”

He says the incident could have been a lot worse for him and his family.

Rob says he is a bit sore in the aftermath of the accident but was back at work on Tuesday.

Second Bay Dreams deemed ‘perfect’ Kate Russell Reporter

A sea of revellers dressed in tie-dye, bum bags and glitter descended on Nelson for the second installment of Bay Dreams South last week - and according to organisers it all went “perfectly to plan”.

The music festival saw just over 20,000 people congregate in Trafalgar Park under sunny skies on Saturday for the follow-up to last years’ inaugural, sold-out event.

“I’ve been involved in running festivals for 17 years and this is the smoothestrunning one I’ve ever been involved in,” says Bay Dreams director Toby Burrows.

“Last year was a bit of a test but I feel this year we really nailed it. Everyone felt a lot more comfortable.”

Starting at 12pm, a steady flow of punters streamed through the gates throughout the afternoon and into the evening, with many taking advantage of door sales thanks to 5,000 extra tickets this year.

Free water and sunscreen were available at the event

and free buses were in service for ticket holders.

Visitors praised the camping set-up at Rutherford Park, although more than 60 tents were left behind which will packed up and sent overseas for refugees.

Police, paramedics and fire crews had a heavy presence at the event throughout the day and reported no major incidents.

“The large crowd was generally well behaved, and police are happy to report there were no major issues.

Four people were arrested at the event for disorderly behaviour and have been spoken to,” says Senior Sergeant John Price.

Emergency Manager at NMDHB Pete Kara said health services saw just over 500 people throughout the day requiring treatment for small cuts, exhaustion and overdoses, which was “as expected”.

The festival brought an impressive line-up of acts, with international superstar Tyler, The Creator as headliner, alongside other international names including Skepta, Yelawolf, Netsky, SASASAS and Ella Mai.

Record house prices: Nelson has had one of the biggest increases in average asking price over the last year, with a jump of over 19 per cent.

According to realestate.co.nz, Nelson and Bays has had an average asking price of $763,904 for December 2019, compared to $638,230 the previous December. This was a jump of 19.6 per cent. The highest jump in average asking price was in Manawatu/Whanganui which jumped from $359,364 to $450,673, an increase of 25.4 per cent.

Chair of Nelson City Council’s sport and recreation committee, councillor Tim Skinner, says he is “absolutely delighted” with how the event went.

“The crowd was exceptionally well-behaved, and throughout the day I saw numerous examples of partygoers looking after their mates and being respectful to each other and to our city.

“I’d like to thank all of the

emergency services, event organisers and volunteers an event of this size takes a huge amount of planning and co-ordination and it really was a team effort.”

Toby says while Nelson may be small, the city is a perfect candidate for a music festival.

“The proximity of everything to the city is great - we’re really excited to bring it back again next year and hope to be here for the long haul.”

Crash victim named: Police can now name the woman who died following a crash on Wakefield Quay, Nelson. She was Christine Jane Kelly, aged 30, from Greymouth, who resided in Nelson. The crash occurred on 29 December and Christine passed away at Christchurch Hospital on 30 December. “Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones,” a police spokesperson said in a statement to media. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing.

New year honours: Two Nelson women have been honoured for their services to nursing and conservation as part of the New Year’s Honour list.

Annette Milligan was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her work in founding Nelson’s INP Medical Clinic in 1989, a womenfocused, nurse-led sexual and reproductive health centre that offers a wide variety of advice and checks for women’s health issues. Cable Bay resident Barbara Stuart was also honoured for her work in conservation administration in the Nelson-Marlborough region for more than a decade. Barbara has been a member of the Nelson Marlborough Conservation Board for the past two years, contributing advice towards conservation policy outcomes across the Northern South Island region.

Coastguard raffle to bring summer cheer Staff Reporter A few people will be celebrating later this summer when the national Coastguard fundraising Summer Lottery raffle is drawn.

Coastguard Nelson members are out selling tickets around the region now and hope that a local will win some of the big prizes up for offer.

While the raffle is a national one, $7 out of every $10 ticket sold in Nelson Tasman will go directly to Coastguard Nelson.

That money will go towards the Coastguard Nelson efforts The Nelson Jazz Festival came to a swinging conclusion on Sunday after four days of jazz and blues gigs around Nelson and Tasman.

Christmas trees light up Cathedral, Wednesday, 11 December: The Christmas Tree Festival at Christ Church Cathedral was a huge success, with interest from all over the world. Over 4,500 people nominated their favourite tree, while many thousands more attended. The tree with the most votes was from the Alzheimer’s group and the second most popular tree was from the Citizens Advice Bureau. Coming in third were the Happy Gardeners Club.

Organiser Bev Greig was delighted with the response. “Next year I would like to have another 20 trees,” she says. The

400 Christmas bags for families in need, Wednesday, 18 December: Fifeshire Foundation manager Leanne Churchill says they delivered 412 Christmas gift and food packs as part of the 2019 Big Give appeal.

“We gave out over $30,000 in grocery vouchers and, in addition, received over $5000 in voucher donations.

Cash donations received for the event were almost $20,000.” Excess gifts in the days leading up to Christmas were dropped to Women’s Refuge, Nelson children’s hospital, the Salvation Army and the Community House Motueka community Christmas event.

Brook Sanctuary reflects and looks to future It’s been a busy year for the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, with multiple staff changes and plenty going on behind the scenes. Kate Russell talks to chief executive Ru Dawson about the successes and challenges of 2019, and what 2020 holds.

Tell us about the progress the sanctuary made in 2019.

After two years focused on pest removal, we’re entering a phase of why we’re here - to supply a plot of land which supplies the wildlife within to not just survive - but thrive, and to introduce lost species. We’ve achieved more than we hoped and we’re in a pretty positive frame of mind. Project wise, we’ve enlarged our walking track network. We’re extending two tracks and will continue to put in additional tracks over the next two years. Our lower valley loop track will be completed soon. It’s been three years in the making, with 3000 volunteer hours and half a million dollars going into it. This includes a new footbridge over the top of the main dam, which will be opened in mid-February. We also have refreshed signage going in soon - about 100 new signs to improve wayfinding and to highlight special sites and points of interests.

Were there many staff changes?

The staff and board changes were significant, with myself

coming in as chief executive in May and new chairman Chris Hawkes starting in April. A lot of long-serving people stood down. We looked closely at the skills we needed around the table to help us and that’s been a feature of this year.

What were the main challenges in 2019?

We’ve had a few disappointments. It’s been a year that’s been very hard in terms of what the weather has thrown at us. A spring mega mast dropped a lot of seeds, which is a food source for the pests we don’t want in there. We’ve been tested with mice, rats and weasels and it’s been a constant battle keeping them out. We’ve had a long four months of being on high alert, but it’s been a good test for our systems and processes.

What species will you be introducing this year?

The first species we are looking at is the orangefronted parakeet and then the saddleback. Hopefully, all going well, we will have these species in by June. We would have loved to have got rowi (brown kiwi) but we had to decide on accepting them

against being free of rats. It was a hard decision and very disappointing as we were on the cusp and the volunteers and staff had almost finished kiwi proofing the site. But we’ve got to move on. They will be here one day, but not now.

Currently, entry into the sanctuary is by donation.

Will you be introducing an entry fee?

We plan to start charging the public this year. I know it’s a community project, but it’s becoming a reality that we’ll need to move to that direction.

There will be set rates for out of towners and reduced rates for locals, and under-fives will be free. People can also join as a supporter and pay an annual fee - which works like an annual pass.

What else will 2020 bring?

It’s going to be a busy year in education. We’re looking to appoint an educator and really start pushing the education space again and the outdoor classroom for schools to use.

We’re also going to work with DOC, i-Site and the museum more and work on fundraising and securing grants.

NMIT Viticulture and Winemaking graduate lands job at renowned Marlborough winery NMIT Viticulture and Winemaking graduate Lucy Tyrell is already making her mark on the industry, working at one of Marlborough’s most highly-regarded wineries.

Lucy graduated in 2019 and is currently working full-time as a cellar hand at Yealands Estate.

“I am still continually learning the practicalities of being a cellar hand every day while linking the deeper knowledge I learnt through the course,” Lucy says.

Lucy was drawn to studying Viticulture and Winemaking NMIT as it combines three of her interests - science, art and problemsolving.

Marlborough is at the forefront of New Zealand’s wine industry growth, which makes NMIT’s Marlborough campus the perfect place to study.

The facilities are world-class and students get to visit some of the country’s most prestigious wineries and learn first-hand from award-winning winemakers.

Lucy had the opportunity to work part-time during her studies, gaining experience in the

cellar door, in the vineyard during summer, and in the winery during the vintage.

Getting that real-world experience helped her to “solidify the theory learnt in class,” she says.

“Studying has introduced me to the wine industry and it’s nice to meet people that have a similar passion for viticulture and winemaking.

“The discussions had about the worldwide wine industry and all the people I have met, both in Marlborough and from overseas, has led me to conclude that there are so many different aspects to the wine industry - so many different people with opinions, dreams and goals. But there is a place for everyone.”

Lucy says that studying at NMIT has provided her with valuable life and work experience, which has already led to her taking an impressive first step in her career.

Beethoven meets Biggie in new Nelson rap duo Jonty Dine Reporter

An unlikely mix of classical and rap has helped shape Nelson’s newest music duo.

Jayden Hawks and Philippe de Maupeou have very contrasting musical backgrounds - Jayden growing up in Auckland listening to hip-hop while Philippe was born in France where he played the violin and piano.

Their style of Beethoven meets Biggie has proven popular with their growing fanbase.

The pair, known as Phiscari and JJ Hawks, released their first single “Traded” back in February and have just followed it up with their latest track “Lavish Life”.

The song features a verse where Jayden, aka JJ Hawks, raps exclusively in French.

“We both like the French culture, he’s dragged me into it a bit, but I really appreciate it. So, we wrote some French lyrics to make it more multi-cultural.”

The song was released to YouTube, iTunes and Spotify to a positive reception.

“We haven’t heard anything negative.”

The group formed at the beginning of the year at Nelson College.

“I have always enjoyed doing rapping and when Philippe offered me to rap over one of his tracks, it was a great opportunity.”

Jayden says he has always been a big fan of Philippe’s work.

“I haven’t heard a bad beat from him.”

Philippe says they draw inspiration from modern day culture, blended with history for their lyrics, but they steer away from explicit language.

“We are into hip hop but don’t cuss, we like to have fun with lyrics, using humour.”

The teenagers say they hope to play some local gigs in the near future with the dream of one day performing at one of New Zealand’s top festivals such as Rhythm and Vines.

‘Phiscari’ says if he could work with any artist he would opt for Nelsonbased multi-instrumentalist rapper ‘Hoody Time’.

Summer Shakespeare returns with Romeo and Juliet Matt McCrorie

One of the Bard’s greatest love stories will be making its way to the Tasman region this summer, with history’s greatest starcrossed lovers set to take the stage.

Nelson Summer Shakespeare is returning next week, touring venues across the Nelson region with its production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

Director Giles Burton says the 2018 production of ‘Twelfth Night’ was a significant success, attracting more than 2200 people over 14 performances across four locations.

“It attracted an incredibly diverse audience and delivered a fun, family outing, and for most, their first foray into Shakespeare’s rich library of works.”

Building upon the strengths of previous Summer Shakespeare seasons, Giles says he has built a strong and professional ensemble which will offer everything from humour and heartbreak to swordfights, which are sure to delight audiences.

With a 6pm start, the outdoor

performances operate on a ‘pay what you decide’ scheme, where audience members can pay what they think the performance was worth.

“The intention is to create a simple, yet magical event where families can experience high quality arts performed by trained and experienced Shakespearean actors without the worry of excessive expense,” says Giles.

Like previous years, the performances will be hosted in outdoor spaces, including Fairfield House in Nelson, Isel Park in Stoke, Washbourn Gardens in Richmond and Riverside Community Oval in Lower Moutere.

“As well as adding to the region’s summer events for locals, it also provides access to affordable, professional arts for the large number of visitors who come to the region during January.”

Along with the fresh take on some of the more traditional gender roles of the play, Giles says the intention for the 2020 production is to build on previous years by adding two

new venues in the form of Isel Park and the Theatre Royal.

“This will engage more people, more families, more Shakespeare education, and more accessibility for our communities to high quality professional theatre.”

The young lovers are played by actors Finlay Langelaan and Georgia Chapple, both ex-Garin College students. They have both returned to the region to be part of presenting professional theatre in outdoor spaces in the region.

Giles says audiences are encouraged to make a night of it and take a picnic and enjoy a professional rendition of one of the Shakespeare’s greatest tales.

Romeo and Juliet is on at Fairfield House, Nelson from 6pm on January 16 – 19 and 21 -24, before moving to Riverside for January 25 and 26. Then Richmond will play host to the performance on the 29 and 30th, before two performances in Isel Park on January 31 and February 1. A special seated performance will also be staged at Nelson’s Theatre Royal on Sunday 2 February.

Retirement: No doubt, many of your hardworking readers have been hanging-out for a little down-time over the holidays to recharge. But, it’s not always easy.

When I was in full-time employment (and that was before the full misery of cell phones blighting all our social arrangements) I often found celebrating Christmas more stressful than working!

Now I’m retired you might think Christmas chez moi is a bit of breeze. Wrong!

One problem with retirement is the irresistible temptation to continually put off doing the important stuff, like exercise. Mind you, do I really need exercise? I can still hobble to the bar and order a round faster than Usain Bolt.

Another real problem with retirement is the surprisingly sticky trap of daytime TV. Aside from screaming at all the unbelievably dim contestants on the quiz shows, I worry whether to order the Fish Harvester or sign up for the dishwasher-friendly barbeque. Also, do I have room for the buy one, get one free massage beds? And where on earth to put

all those ladders? Then there’s the constant anxiety over which death insurance to get.

Alas, retirement, it seems, is full of surprises, not all of which respond to antibiotics.

In order to finance a climate committee and climate Czar that will create more expense and paperwork, compliant councillors - ignoring all due process - raided the port company dividend to the tune of $500,000. This was done under urgency through a corrupt process that is the subject of a community complaint to the Auditor General.

Meanwhile, unbelievably, the same council was approving another fossil fuel station in Tahunanui - which some claim will endanger cyclists because of its position. What this situation is suggesting is a case of staff forging ahead with sensitive issues without informing elected representatives. Whatever the truth is, the reality is Nelson City Council is once again suffering from bad management. An attempt by the mayor to explain this hypocrisy

REGATTA WEEK brought to you by

Excitement is building ahead of the 2020 Evolution Sails Nelson Regatta which is being held later this month. Organised by the Tasman Bay Cruising Club, a large fleet of trailer yachts will be competing for the South Island Championship, joined by sports boats and keelers in Nelson’s biggest regatta event. A full programme of racing starts on Friday, January 17th and goes through to Tuesday, January 21st, showcasing stunning Tasman Bay with its fantastic sea breezes, warm waters and gorgeous mountain backdrop.

The Nelson Regatta, TBCC’s flagship event, starts on the Friday with an invitational race for all boats, followed by prize-giving and socialising in the evening.

On Saturday, the trailer yachts competing for the South Island Championships, sports boats and big boats will head out for

round-the-cans racing. There is also a longer course for boats which prefer point-to-point racing over laps. On Saturday, boats will compete in the Wellington to Nelson race which involves

racing yachts from Nelson, Wellington, Waikawa and further afield. It’s a big social gathering of all the yachties on Saturday at the club, with entertainment and dining available. Sunday is more round-the-cans action, with all boats on the water. The trailer yachts and sports boats wrap up their sailing, with an early evening prize-giving. Monday is a race for the keelers across to Anchorage, a beach party in the Abel Tasman and Tuesday sees

the boats return to Nelson, with a prize-giving that night. The warm pristine waters of Tasman Bay have been the playground of New Zealand Olympic and world champion sailors for many years.

This is your opportunity to join this tradition, as the Tasman Bay Cruising Club welcomes sailors and supporters to the region for what is set to be another celebration of New Zealand yachting.

Long-standing nautical history

The inaugural Nelson Regatta

was conceived in 2009 by a group of local sailors, with ambitions of placing the region back on the national sailing map. Over the years the format has evolved to create a competitive and social week of racing that showcases the beauty of Nelson and Tasman Bay, including the iconic Abel Tasman National Park. The region is proud of its long-standing nautical history, with yacht races dating back to European settlement. Nelson's affair with the sea (beyond a means of transport) began in 1843 when the first official yacht race was staged, which led to the establishment in 1857 of New Zealand's earliest yacht club - the Nelson Yacht Club. A growing big boat fleet eventually saw a new club established, the Tasman Bay Cruising Club, in 1989.

Nelson’s clear, sunny mornings makes it ideal for sailing - the fairly predictable 15-18kt afternoon sea breeze and with the added accessibility of the Abel Tasman National Park.

“It’s more than one race, so you have different battles going on with different boats, so it’s quite fun.” On the Friday evening locals and visitors can enjoy watching a race which starts in the harbour. “The regatta is open to all people with trailer yachts in Nelson and the event may also inspire people who are looking at getting into yachting, as there are a lot of boats looking for crew members.”

“There’s also the building (the iconic ‘Red Shed’), the bar, the nice yard and great location,” says TBCC member Mark Howard, proud owner of ‘Eagle,’ his trailer yacht.

“I love being part of the club. We race every Wednesday night and over the winter there’s a really cool travel series for my class of yacht which starts in Taupo and works its way up to Tauranga and over to Auckland.” Mark says the social side of club membership is really good.

“It’s a good mid-week de-stresser; you get out on the water and forget all about work.

"The cool thing is you can meet 15 to 20 boats out there, but it’s not about the boat with the biggest budget

– the difference between first and last might only be 100 metres. It can be like the world champs out there on a Wednesday night, but everyone comes back to the bar and, after a few pints, you forget about it,” laughs Sam.

Nelson’s biggest weekend of racing will see thousands of punters test their luck at the track.

The Nelson Harness Races Summer Festival attracts over 4000 people to the course over the two-day event.

The festival will see 10 harness races each day with the marquee event being Friday’s Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup race.

Club president Kristie Hill says Nelson is in for another fantastic festival.

She says about 4500 punters are expected over the Friday and Sunday.

The festival has one major change this year with the coveted 3000m Nelson Cup shifting from Sunday to Friday.

The change was made as Sunday will now see the Magic Mile Day with all 10 races over just one mile.

Kristie says the centre of the track will again be filled with marquees and food vendors, with under 18s set for free entry to help create a family-friendly atmosphere.

“We are doing a couple new things, but we also have the usual bouncy castles and kids’ carts.”

Sunday will also see pony rides available thanks to the Motueka Pony Club and, of course, the hotly contested Fashion in the Field.

“People will be absolutely dressed up to the nines.”

Kristie says more than 100 horses have entered the festival which she says is fantastic, considering the number of racing happening around the country.

She says the Takaka-owned horse ‘Change is Good’, driven by Mitch Kerr, is an early favourite for the Nelson Cup while local rider Murray Pash’s Giselle will also be in the running.

The purse is hovering around $14,000 for the main event.

Earlier this year it was Dadndave who nosed favourite Huey Lewis by 0.1 of a second in a thrilling race.

Disappointing play by Griffins Nelson Pine Griffins were completely outclassed by Canterbury Country in their Zone Three Hawke Cup preliminary round match at Mainpower Oval in Rangiora late last year.

Asked to bat first, Nelson made a disastrous start, losing their first six wickets for a paltry 15 runs.

Facing a 160-run deficit, Nelson fared a little better in their second innings.

Cricket: The Central Stags are in a tight scrap for a play-off berth in the New Zealand T20 Super Smash. The defending champions have three wins from eight games with one no result, to sit third on a congested points table. The Stags have two remaining matches, against Canterbury and Otago, before a possible preliminary final on January 17.

Football: The post-Christmas season kicks off in the National Football League this Sunday with Tasman United set to host Eastern Suburbs at Trafalgar Park. Jess Ibrom’s side will be desperate for a resurgence as they are currently anchored to the bottom of the table with just two wins. Though they sit 10th, Tasman are just three points shy of their weekend’s opponents, with the fourth-placed Eastern also registering just two victories to date. Kick-off in Nelson is at 2pm.

Sea Swim in full swing Peter Gibbs As the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series approaches the halfway point in the season the distances are increasing, with Bendi Kepess taking line honours in Thursday’s 1500m swim - the longest of the season so far.

With a strong outgoing tide, the course was set in a triangle from the yacht club ramp to the ‘dolphin’ navigation marker, south of the Richardson St steps.

Then, a northward slog of 650m against the current back to an offshore marker and into the ramp.

Hayden Squance set the early pace, rounding the dolphin narrowly ahead of a tight lead bunch.

Fergus Drummond took over in a speedy tide-assisted leg to the southern mark.

The 650m third leg of the triangle was a slog against the current and the increasing waves, with Luke Kelly taking the lead role until the Boat Shed, when Bendi Kepess put in a spurt which took him to a narrow lead which he held

There were many out-oftown competitors among the 90 competing in the 1500m swim, with former Nelson swimmer Julia Cree returning from Auckland to dominate the non-wetsuit women’s field ahead of the formerly

unbeaten Jude Vincent.

In the short swim over 500m, Samantha Wilson held off a field of 30 in a tight finish, ahead of Olivia HuataFindlay, Corey Tremblay, Lily Claridge, Mia Langley and Ariah Bayley.

Many swimmers will head

to Taupo for Swimming NZ’s Epic open water championships next weekend. For the younger swimmers there will be races over 5km and 7.5km, aiming for world championship qualification after the cancellation of the NSW Open Water Championships before Christmas.

For 47-year-old Terry Bone and 56-year-old Christina Harris, it will be the challenge of the Epic back-to-back races over 10km, 5km and 2.5km.

At the same time back in Nelson, swimmers will take on the 33rd annual Eyebright Mile - a 2km swim from the Nelson Yacht Club to Tahuna Beach.

With so much talent away in Taupo, it could come down to a race between this season’s form swimmer Luke Kelly and Eyebright record holder Hayden Squance.

Spectators will be able to follow the race from Rocks Rd, starting at 11.55 - right on the high tide, on Sunday, January 12.

Eddie wins South Island speedway title in style Jody Scott

Nelson’s Eddie Frans won the Donaldson Civil South Island Production Saloon title at Milestone Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night.

Eddie claimed the feature crown on what was a busy night of titles up for grabs.

A packed stadium was kept busy with plenty of spills and thrills which culminated in a demolition derby to end the night.

The Production Saloon title was a late inclusion in the Nelson calendar. With strong fields most weeks, it was the locals who dominated the heat results with Cam Lankshear, Kaylim McNabb and Frans picking of wins.

Lankshear and Frans were off the front row in the final.

They battled for the first few laps but Lankshear’s option of the high line was his undoing

With another local, Vaughan Cornelius, edging past into second spot, Blenheim’s Brett Allen kept low to finish in third with Pam Nixon in fourth which gave Nelson cars four out of the top five spots.

The Stock cars were running their club champs as Keightley Teece’s season of hard knocks continued when he was left upside down again. A run-

off was needed to then decide the winner between local Ben Smith and Blenheim’s Wade Sweeting.

A cat and mouse game ensued before the more experienced Smith outsmarted the younger driver.

Round two of the T.Q club champs went the way of Morgan Frost, running away in the feature.

The Youth Ministocks continued to grow their

numbers, with two wins to Cambell McManaway and Blake Hearne picking up the other heat win.

The Streetstock best pairs provided plenty of action with the car of Thomas McLeod lasting only one lap after finding the wall in a tangle-up.

Bradley Evans and Neville Soper came out victors from ex-New Zealand champion Simon Bland and Shannon Marr.

The Demolition Derby ended a big night of racing with a nervous Sarah Kitto surviving the carnage to win.

Dylan and Adam Hall were the sheriffs in the stock cars and had their hands full when the Nell brothers Brayden and Josh decided to take them on in their derby cars.

Plenty of smoke and a few sparks kept the fire crews busy and the crowd on their toes - a great way to end a festive night of racing.

First run of year for harriers

A smoky haze in the sky over the Monaco Peninsula blocked the sun from shining and made running conditions much more pleasant for the 13th annual Monaco 5km and10km races on Saturday.

The event saw 134 participants with Angus Wemyss home first in the 10km in 35.34mins, just 30 seconds ahead of Hayden Squance.

Up-and-coming young runner, Matt Bowen, came home in third place in an impressive time f 37.30mins. Julia Grant ran strongly to finish in 37.41mins and was the first woman home. Alan West, 71.14mins, was the clear winner in the walking section.

In the 5km event, Josh Barry finished first in a fast time of 17.39mins, with Lizzie Thomas the first woman home in 23.17mins. Steve Pauling led the walkers home in 33.59mins.

Race organiser Stu Hague was delighted with the turnout for the event, which raised a large sum of money to subsidise the travel costs of Nelson’s Junior Athletes.

Nelson volleyballer Sophie Young has added another win to her list of outstanding achievements in 2019. Sophie has become the first Nayland College student to gain a full volleyball scholarship to an American college in Illinois. When it came to selecting a university or college to attend, Sophie was spoiled for choice, with many schools interested in her. However, one grabbed her interest from the very start of the process and last month Sophie signed a volleyball scholarship with Parkland College, a Junior College in Champaign, Illinois, roughly two hours south of Chicago.

Parkland particularly appealed to Sophie because of the “cool university town” it’s located in and the family nature of the volleyball team, as well as the success it was having. holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base.

Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year.

“I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.”

Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.”

Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland.
