Backlash over stalled city plan Kate Russell Reporter

A city centre retailer says it is “disappointing” that plans to reinvigorate Nelson’s CBD have

been stalled after other business owners challenged moves to reduce car parking. Renee Wilson of Palm Boutique has spoken up on her desire for Nelson City Council to make the city more pedestrian-friendly.

This follows council’s recent decision to vote against a proposal to implement a ‘hybrid’ trial which would see elements of the council’s original four options for Trafalgar, Bridge and Hardy

Sts come together - along with $900,000 in funding from central government. These included closing Trafalgar St to vehicles, two footpath widening options or doing nothing.

Council sought public feedback with 43 per cent of respondents in favour of keeping the status quo and 39 per cent in favour of pedestrianising Trafalgar St.

Getting a buzz out of bees Kate Russell “Bees are cool,” say Nelson Intermediate students. A group of 20 young bee enthusiasts from the school have taken on a project to get their own beehives and make their own beeswax food wraps. Teacher Anna Chitty says the school has around 100 students in its Enviro Group, who have split up to do different projects. “This particular group wanted to get bees.” The school will be getting three beehives at the start of next year with their caretaker Roger Thorn currently learning how to be a certified beekeeper.

“I agree with it. We have a housing shortage and there’s plenty of land that is undeveloped. But I can understand why people would be upset by it.”

“I’m not strongly opinionated about the topic, but it makes sense to have a development as we do have a shortage of houses.”

“I don’t know enough about the topic to make an opinion about it at this stage.”

“I don’t know a lot about the topic. It would be a shame to lose the area but, at the same time, we need more houses.”

Maitai campaigners head to council Charles Anderson Campaigners who want to keep the Maitai Valley rural have taken their message to Nelson city councillors. The group gathered at council buildings yesterday to protest a proposed change in land use which could see hundreds of homes built on former farmland in the Maitai Valley. It has collected over 8000 signatories to the petition against rezoning the Kaka Valley, which up until a year ago was covered mostly in gorse, wild goats and grazing stock. The 800-acre area is private land, 315 acres of which developers want to turn into space for housing, starting at around $550,000 for a house and land package, as well as creating a wetland area, cycle tracks and regeneration of native bush.

Beth Beauchamp and Ali Howard were among the dozens of protesters who campaigned outside Civic House on Tuesday. Photo: Charles Anderson. Any development needs to go through three stages before being approved for

construction: firstly, a zoning change from rural to residential and open space, then resource

consent approval and finally construction. However, the group called ‘Save the Maitai’ say that the development would ruin the valley. “It’s very clear that the majority of Nelsonians treasure the Maitai-Kaka valley as a peaceful area where generations of people have swum in the river, picnicked, played with their children, cycled, walked their dogs and enjoyed many other activities, free from city traffic and noise,” says spokesperson Peter Taylor. He says Nelsonians have not opposed large subdivisions in Atawhai and northern valleys, Marsden Valley, Ngawhatu Valley, nor the Brook, but they have long seen the Maitai as a “sacred and spacious” area that should be left as it is.

Backlash over stalled city plan FROM PAGE 1 “You could take out the carpark outside my shop and put a couple of park benches there, that’s not a problem,” says Renee. “It would be great to see some updates and creative changes within the city centre to give it a new lease of life and encourage people to dwell and stay a little longer.” Renee was part of a taskforce made up of various inner-city retailers who were shouldertapped by council staff to give them insight. She says she backed the hybrid option. “From my perspective, the changes were essentially temporary in nature and something to trial with funding from central government - a real bonus. I think it’s a real shame that opportunity has been lost. It’s a no brainer in my mind.” She says it has been disappointing to see the “negative reactions and narrative” around the proposed changes and council-led consultation after a letter from the Nelson City Business Group was sent to Nelson’s mayor and councillors stating they were “implacably opposed” to changes that reduced car parking. “If council fail to heed our concerns, we will take legal action,” the letter stated. “There’ve been people who’ve had extreme feelings towards the situation. He says he is “fully supportive” of a review of Nelson’s streetscape if it’s done at the right pace. “Unquestionably, change has to happen - I think it’s long overdue. The city is looking tired and it really does need an upgrade. There are a group of us who are very supportive of the

need to have that happen.” He stresses that the views being expressed within the city are not just of retailers but of business and building owners. “It’s certainly not just a retailer’s movement here.” Craig says it’s important any work doesn’t happen in a “kneejerk” approach. “It’s such an important thing to happen in Nelson. It needs to happen properly so we end up with a really good result. It needs to be done thoroughly and with appropriate consultation with stakeholders, so we are all working towards a sensible and positive end result.” Craig says, with a store in Richmond, they’ve been through the process of the Queen St upgrade. “It’s pretty fair to say that ended up being a really good result. It is a nice shopping environment, it’s modern, it’s effective, functional, and it’s Nelson’s turn now to bring itself up to scratch.”

Battle to call Nelson home Getting a buzz out of bees Jonty Dine

Steve Webster can finally call the place he fought so bravely to protect, home. After helping battle the Tasman fires on the frontlines, as well as facing as numerous immigration hurdles, Steve and his wife Gail are now New Zealand citizens. And the news is still sinking in. “Stunned shock,” Steve says. “It wasn’t expected at all, we had no inkling, we had no advice that there was a decision pending or anything.” Steve and his wife Gail first visited New Zealand in 1990 while on a gap year and fell in love with it. “Since then we always dreamt of living here.” The couple made the move in November 2012 on a work visa after leaving their jobs and selling their home in the UK. Their dream soon became a nightmare, though, when it was revealed they had bought a fraudulent business off a scam artist who had fled the country. The Websters spent the next eight years having to continually renew visas with the threat of deportation a constant fear. “We were just living one to two years at a time, it gave us no security.” Immigration eventually told the Websters to leave New Zealand. However, as well his as fight for residency, Steve was also among the brave men and women on the frontline during the 2019 Tasman Fires. It was during this time that the Websters’ plight came to the attention of the public from a photo. “It was all down to that picture, it was just a fluke, somebody took a photo of

Steve Webster and his wife Gail have finally obtained New Zealand residency after years of rejections and appeals. Photo: Jonty Dine. me, I didn’t even see them. They were 100m away.” The photo caught the eye of a friend of Steve’s who created a petition which gathered 94,000 signatures and was presented to Nelson MP Nick Smith. This led to appeals to the Immigration Minister and eventually a review of the decision. Steve says with everything else going on, he figured his residency was well off the radar.

“We were not even following up that hard because of Covid and the elections. We thought no one would be interested in us so it was absolutely out of the blue.” Nick delivered the life-changing news. “He walked in, shook my hand and gave me the letter he received from Immigration Minister Poto Williams.” Steve looked at Nick and said ‘I suppose a hug is out of the question,’ to which Nick replied ‘definitely not’ before the men embraced. Steve then got straight on the phone to his wife. “She didn’t believe it, she said ‘don’t even joke about that’, I shot up the road with the letter and she just looked at me while her knees went and she had to sit down, she was breathless, we both were.” Steve says his family has fully embraced the Kiwi lifestyle and says the way people reacted to their problem made them feel that they chose the right country. “We are extremely happy and grateful for what we’ve been given. We love Nelson, it is big enough to be interesting and small enough to feel friendly.” Steve says he keeps having to remind himself that he can get on with life without this hanging over their heads. “A huge weight is gone, you just have these quiet moments where you just sit and grin.” Nick says the Websters are very welldeserving citizens. “This is a lovely family who have showed huge resilience, they have already contributed much to Nelson but are going to make great Kiwis.”

“We received a Nelson City Council grant to purchase five bee suits and we’ll be renting a hive next term for the students that won’t be here next year,” says Anna. In the meantime, the students are making and selling beeswax food wraps to raise money for other bee equipment. Student Elise Morton says the aim is “to hopefully get rid of a lot of plastic lunch wrap and be more eco-friendly”. They are also planning on using the honey from the bees for the school’s breakfast club. Until the hives arrive, the wraps are being made with organic beeswax that has been donated by families. Students picked out the fabric and they have made over 100 so far. “We had a production line gong with different groups - the cutting table, the grating table, the organising table, the making table. First, we cut the fabric and measured the sizes,” says student Chloe Steele. So far, they have sold 56 wraps to fellow students during lunchtimes, making them affordable for families with prices ranging from $1 to $5 with different sizes to choose from. Anna says if members of the public want to purchase them, they can pop into the office during school hours, but they must bring cash. “Stock is limited, but once we have our own bees and beeswax this project will be ongoing, and we will be selling them throughout the year.”

Still waiting for pilot banking hub for Stoke Locally Owned and Operated

Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

At 95-years-old, Stoke resident Daphne Crampton is tired of waiting for a promised banking hub to materialise in her suburb. Last October, after the closure of the Stoke Kiwibank, the six major banks in New Zealand promised to create a hub consisting of a “Smart ATM”, a support person and online support. It was meant to be open earlier this year, but Daphne isn’t holding her breath. “You can delay these things and delay these things. It’s like a landlord that says they will get round to fixing something and they never do.” Daphne, a resident at Whareama retirement village, says there are many older people who struggle with the current set up, which only includes ATMs. She says people need in person support to help them. “It might be convenient for the banks, but it isn’t convenient for the customer.” Stoke has a population of 16,000 with 4,500 older New Zealanders, one of

the highest proportions of seniors of anywhere in New Zealand. The New Zealand Bankers Association advised Nelson MP Nick Smith and Grey Power Nelson that the six banks, ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, TSB and Westpac remain committed to the Regional Banking Hub pilot but the Covid-19 crisis and lockdown delayed the new service until November. However, this timeline is “subject to review” The association advised it is a pilot on a new type of banking service that needs to be trialled during a period as normal as possible. Christine Tuffnell President of Grey Power Nelson says the delay is disappointing for seniors as it will have been two years by November this year from when Kiwibank closed. “The problem of accessible banking services has been exacerbated during lockdown and by the recent decisions to no longer accept cheques. We accept some delay was inevitable from the Covid-19 emergency. It is better late than never, but we want to encourage the banks to move

new banking hub will help Stoke businesses and I have written to Ministers and the Banks advocating for the November date to be brought forward to help with the post Covid-19 recovery.” Meanwhile, Daphne says she will wait but won’t expect anything soon.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to get ahead. Jacinda Ardern and Labour have announced more support for low income families and individuals to access skills training. This includes the reinstatement of the Training Incentive Allowance (TIA) to help cover the extra costs of studying for single parents and students with disabilities. The previous National Government removed the TIA, ignoring the impact this would have on people’s chances to upskill themselves and get into the workforce. I was Student President at NMIT at the time and campaigned hard against it. I am delighted that it’s back because I know that vocational education is life changing for people in Nelson. I have also advocated strongly for part time workers who receive a benefit to be able to keep more of their wages if their income increases. These changes will help parents like Jayden upskill themselves and keep Nelson moving.

You won’t find Gino Vannelli next to van Beethoven in an alphabetical order of composers but you should. New Zealand’s foremost classical pianist, Michael Houstoun loves him. “I love the tunes, the harmonies, the driving rhythms, the jazz-rock feel,” he says. So much so, that Michael, jazz impresario, Rodger Fox, and the Rodger Fox Big Band (RFBB) are touring a world premiere of Vannelli music through New Zealand in the next three months. The trip will see them come to Nelson after their first attempt was stymied by Covid-19. The pair perform on November 8 at the Nelson Centre of the Musical Arts, 2.30pm. On a rainy winter day in Nelson, Banshee - a one-yearold Siberian husky - was out on a city hillside walkway, dotted with sheep. Dogs are meant to be on a leash in Stanley Whitehead Reserve, but Banshee's owner slipped in the wet, and lost the lead. A person in a house below saw what happened, as environmental inspections manager Brian Wood told a council hearing last week. "It was a member of the public who observed Banshee's behaviour, and reported her as pulling at a sheep. "She watched as Banshee used vigorous head-shaking, and attempted to try and drag the sheep, but could not move it so fed on it where it lay." The farmer, Andrew Newton, recovered the dead Perindale sheep and said in his report to the council the sheep was on the bottom fence-line with its head through the netting. It had been badly mauled around the face, probably prior to it getting its head through the fence. Wool had been pulled from the body which was consistent with a continued dog attack. "We knew it was a husky

and they are a notoriously susceptible breed to that - there are a few breeds susceptible to chasing sheep." The council classified the dog as menacing, the lowest classification under the Dog Control Act, which required a dog to be muzzled in a public space. There were currently 77 dogs on the council's books with this classification - a number that has remained similar each year over the past eight years. Since 2013 and up to 2019, it has dealt with 377 dog attacks on animals and 159 dog attacks on people. Banshee's owner Ashley Shih, who declined to attend the council hearing remotely by Zoom or in person, tried unsuccessfully having the classification reversed. The Nelson City Council deemed the dog must remain muzzled in public. In a report to the council Shih said: "I have always been very responsible. She is never allowed off leash anywhere near sheep as I know dogs, given the chance, will chase prey. "This incident was a wrong place, wrong time accident." The council acknowledged the

steps Shih had taken to remedy the incident, including payment of reparation for the loss of the sheep. Shih said in her report to the council that Banshee had no history of aggression and that she was well cared for. In her written objection to the dog's classification, she said Banshee had been booked in to one of the country's top dog psychologists. Andrew Newton said dog owners had become a lot more responsible around stock in urban areas, but unless they took a firm stance with their dogs, they would keep killing. City councillor Kate Fulton, who chaired the hearing, said Banshee's owner had taken the matter seriously, but they were not convinced Banshee no longer posed a risk. "We're here to uphold safety in public spaces and make sure stock, animals and humans are safe. "In this particular case, we believe the muzzling will work, and that's an acceptable outcome at this point in time." Fulton said the door remained open for a change in Banshee's classification, pending a further application, but until then the dog must remain muzzled in public.

Charity auction goes virtual, Wednesday, 26 August: The Big Brothers Big Sisters online charity auction was winner for all, according to programme director Chelsea Routhan. “Overall, we raised $40,000, which is incredible considering we didn't hold the event,” she says. “This was raised from the online auction and incredibly generous supporters who had purchased tickets for the dinner let us keep the money instead of refunding them.” The most popular items were the Skywire experience, Frozen II Lego, a State Cinema screen advertising package and the Deadly Ponies handbag. All money raised will go directly towards matching young people on their waiting list with a volunteer mentor.

President Nicole Russell says the exhibition, which was held at Wall to Wall Art Gallery on Bridge St, was a welcome change from their usual winter event. “It was a different space, but we were happy with it. There was a lot of foot traffic going through.” The group’s next event will be the ‘Art in the Park’ exhibition at Queens Gardens on Saturday, 16 January 2021. David’s second chance at glory, Wednesday, 22 July: Nelson’s David Egelstaff came up just short in his quest for a second chance at securing a Super Rugby contract. The 28-year-old was one of five contestants representing each franchise on Three’s TV show called ‘Second Chance Charlie.’ The winner received $10,000 and a 12-week training and development programme with a Super Rugby franchise thanks to 2degrees. David says his time on the show helped him feel sharper, clearer and more motivated. The prize went to prop James Cockburn who was announced the winner on 6 August. He will link up with the Hurricanes in pre-season next year.

Local production staff plead for recognition Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

They usually are dressed in black and behind the scenes of our beloved local events but now they are turning red to let Nelsonians know they are out there and need support. ‘We Make Events’ is a global campaign started by the events industry which calls for greater recognition of producers amid the uncertainty of a Covid-19 pandemic. “There are people in this industry that are suffering greatly,” says Wendy Clease. “We are not used to speaking up because we are behind the scenes. But now it’s time to say that we need help too.” So, to that end, next Wednesday venues around the city will be lit up red to remind people of those who work hard to make sure locals have events to go to. Producers of festivals, theatre shows, grassroots venues and business events have all been in limbo without much support and say the entire supply chain is at risk of collapse. JR Richardson, of VenueTech, says that if companies and people start leaving the

Photo: Charles Anderson. industry, then, when events do start coming back, it will be difficult to put on projects for the public. “No one is annoyed that we are in this situation,” he says. “We are an incredibly risk adverse industry, we are used to having

the responsibility of our crew and audiences on our shoulders. [Level 2] has been the right thing to do but, because we agree with that, we have probably stayed quiet a little too long.” Sand McDougall says that she has invested 30 years of her life

into the industry and all of a sudden it was gone. “It messes with your head. My sense of purpose has gone.” Even though Nelson is now in Level 1, JR says the fear is the jumping back and forth between levels and the uncertainty that

creates. “It’s been a difficult gamble for people to say ‘yes’ to work not knowing what would be permitted to go ahead.” Tony Lilleby, of CognitAV, says he still remembers in March when Level 4 was announced and how he watched email after email come through cancelling their shows. In Level 1 there was a sniff of normality but that was all snatched away again. “It’s pretty grim. I know some big AV companies that have been around for 30 year have dropped from 60 to 10 staff.” Producer Giles Burton says the pandemic coincides with Nelson City Council slashing events budgets, which will now be very hard to get back. But investing more in local productions would be one thing to help the local industry survive. Sand says September 30 is about making people aware that they are here. “We are always the people in the black, but we need to say we are here and we are worth something.” More than anything they want people to come out to events when they are put on to try and pull the industry through this time.

Tatiana Staples is a leader both in and out of the classroom. The Stoke School student is the most recent recipient of the prestigious Sir Peter Blake Young Leaders Award. The award recognises students who show leadership in making a positive change towards a better future for our communities and planet. The 10-year-old was stunned to win the accolade. “I’m overwhelmed, very surprised, but I feel great.” Tatiana was awarded for her willingness to help junior students as a senior monitor, serve on the school board of students, and help lead the kapa haka. Like her award’s namesake, Tatiana has a passion for the environment and is frequently seen picking up litter, not that she considers it as an act of leadership.

“That’s just the right thing to do. why wouldn’t everyone do that?” Principal Sarah Davies says Tatiana stands out for all the right reasons. However, Tatiana certainly doesn’t see it that way. “I’m just a normal average student,” she says. “I just try and be myself, responsible and kind to others and don’t judge people by their looks.” Tatiana says she tries to demonstrate the values of her school every day, the most important being ‘one whanau.’ “This means to work together because teamwork is the dream work.” The young leader has also been commended for her efforts to educate students about healthy diets and arrange lunchtime activities to improve their fitness. Mother Kim McGettigan says her daughter is a blessing to have. “She takes everything in her stride, she is just the coolest kid to have around, I’m very proud of her.”

Smart or stupid? Smart little city, or stupid little city? We all know you can't put old heads on young shoulders, and for our councillors to be allowing children and teenagers on skateboards and scooters to be tearing along the footpaths weaving in and out of vulnerable, elderly people is amazingly non-smart. I know people who won't shop in Nelson - and the middle aged and elderly are often those with disposable income (not the tearaways on scooters) - because they find the CBD footpaths a dangerous environment. And they are. Would be interested to know what is smart about seeing city businesses losing patronage. Morag Woode

Children threatened at pop-up playground: These places all need CCTV cameras working 24/7 and flood lights for overnight to capture the ones that damage these places. Sad but true. Noel Lummis

the park yesterday afternoon and yelled at all the older kids (around 8 and 9) to get off the pump track so her children could have a turn. Hopefully when the novelty wears off, we can all play nice and enjoy the space. I think it’s awesome the council have made this space for all our young people. When mine were little and wanted a turn at the skate park on their scooters, I taught them it was a big kid’s space and they had to keep to the edges and be careful of the older kids. We never had any issues. I always found the older kids naturally respectful and careful of the younger ones. These places are here for all the young people. Karyn Brain The "person" assaulted was a young person by an adult. I think that all parties need to learn to share. Micaela Taylor This is a brilliant initiative! Well done NCC. Evey McAuliffe I would like to see the “real” ongoing cost of this “playground”. Graeme O'Brien

When we were there a group of teenagers seemed to think they could hog it and they don’t like to let the little ones have a go. I knew they would cause issues before it was even open. Sheena Thomas

I went there with my children last weekend and thought it was fantastic. Admittedly we weren’t on the pump track. Kids loved it and we went back the next day. Jacinta Beullens

Come on NCC, get it together. Chellz Carter My kids are keen to check it out but I have been hesitant after hearing what our town’s teenagers deem acceptable behaviour, and yes I have a teenager myself (and younger kids) and he has been taught to respect others and knows the repercussions of such terrible behaviour - he wouldn't dare. Jaynie Holmes Good dog Cadbury, good dog: I knew a lab that was 19 years old as well, rumour was she had given birth to over 100 pups. That was over twenty years ago now when I knew her, so I would say she would have of passed on by now. Allister Tosh Awesome story Hamish, definitely man’s best friend and he obviously came into your life for a reason - you know that more than anyone. Let him love his time up the Maitai, have fun. Geoff Win Our gorgeous black lab Kate was very well for 16 years. She was such a trooper and a true darling at the end. Julie Scully Well done Hamish and Cadbury, make sure you get that amazing South Island trip done before all the tourists turn up again. Best wishes. Steve Woodfine Lovely old Cadbury. Looking forward to see-

ing him again soon. Renee Lang This is what I call real beauty in a world that lacks it at its roots. You and your beautiful lab are indeed a flower that breaks through cracks in concrete against all odds and reeks of everything that is pure essence in this thing we call life and living. I've seen two labs out. Labs are life givers that give us air to breathe when we can't do it on our own. Anya Naraya Flu rates plummet amid Covid response: Wouldn’t have anything to do with the sanitiser and hand washing would it? Renee Toms Yip keep hand sanitizer in every shop on the way in. Katherine Harvey Also, the fact that we don't have people coming in from overseas bringing flu strains in, plus higher immunisation numbers this year. That combined with hand sanitiser, hand washing, social distancing and mask wearing means less flu. Delwyn Lovell How good is that. Lockdown and social distancing works. It definitely has for this household. Kaylas broken lungs Giving a kidney away to a stranger: What an amazing thing to do. Gives me faith in

Nelson Matters The scale of Nelson and New Zealand’s economic problems were laid bare with three major reports out last week. Stats NZ reported the biggest ever drop in our national income (GDP) of 12.2%. It is much worse than Australia’s 7%. This is because Australia has taken a more targeted approach to Covid controls allowing low risk industries like construction and forestry to continue during lockdown. NZ’s inflexible approach also cost us the Rugby championship. National’s plan is to be tighter at the border by testing everyone before they come into New Zealand but to also work much more closely with industry on tailored

solutions that keeps businesses working. A good example of this was the positive solution I brokered for Nelson’s marine engineering businesses. Treasury’s pre-election report is awful for jobs. 70,000 people have lost their jobs since March and they forecast losses of another 100,000. The forecast is for 250,000 jobless by 2024 and 5,000 in Nelson. My top priority is jobs. I have the experience and track record from two previous recessions when we halved unemployment. Dole numbers reduced every year from 2010 to 2017 under National, but increased again in 2018 and 2019 prior to Covid. Labour does not understand

that business confidence is key to saving jobs. It is extraordinary that Labour is proposing new costs on small businesses like extra holidays and doubling sick leave at this time of a jobs crisis. National will support businesses to retain and grow jobs with our $10,000 Job Start grants, this week’s announced new technology package and incentives for investment in plant and machinery. Treasury’s financial report is equally bleak with Labour running deficits for the next 15 years which means they will continue to borrow every year till 2035. Debt would top $200 billion and be 48% of GDP. National agrees that borrowing is needed in

humanity seeing someone so selfless helping fellow mankind. Keri Small I did this for my cousin in 2005 with great results. Dale Boyce

And I'm wondering how many people might follow your example. Hope you're a trendsetter. Jane Morrison

Such a kind, selfless thing to do. Good on you. Hope you are recovering well. Cheryl Searle You’re a bloody legend girl. Karl H Evans

You are extremely friggin' awesome. I'm lost for words. Sharon Patterson Dog park to open next month: Looking forward to it. Maureen Jopson Brilliant idea. Jared William Welsh How great for the dogs. Jennie Poulter

Hopefully all the people taking their dogs to the dog park will pick up all their s*** and it won't be a centre for dog fights and dog owners yelling at one another. Happy to be living rural and not have to use a public dog park. Janelle Thorpe

the short term to stimulate the economy. Under our plan we will put more into infrastructure and growing New Zealand’s assets. We will put less into Government bureaucracy. We will let New Zealanders keep more of what they earn by providing income tax reductions next year worth $3,000 for average earners. We will return to surplus by 2027 and keep debt under 36% of GDP. The third report out last week was the ASB’s quarterly regional economic report showing Nelson was 16th - the worst performing region. The March report before Covid also had Nelson bottom. This contrasts with the same reports under

National which had Nelson at number one for both the first and second quarters of 2017. This negative report shows how Labour has hurt our region with increased taxes and centralising services. Government allocation of regional development funding has become far too political as evidenced by the $20m for Taranaki’s Green School and the hundreds of millions for racing and Northland. Nelson has been short changed. Election 2020 is all about the economy and jobs. I look forward to sharing my ideas over the next month on how Nelson can rebuild and recover. Advert.

Elliot Le Page, Daniel Hawke and Tiegan Maru have all been celebrated for helping the region’s young people. Photo: Charles Anderson.

Youth workers recognised for community contribution Three of the region’s most dedicated youth workers have been recognised for their contribution to some of Nelson Tasman's most vulnerable young people. Daniel Hawke, Elliot Le Page and Tiegan Maru were recently celebrated at the annual Nelson Tasman Youth Worker Awards. Nelson Tasman Youth Workers Collective coordinator, Sally Wood, says this year's awards celebrated workers who have sacrificed in order to support our youth. “This year we are celebrating workers that have not only made sacrifices to their personal lives but have gone over and above to support the youth development of some of our region's most vulnerable young people”. Daniel Hawke of Youth Nelson left a well-paid government position eight years ago to take up a tutor role with Youth Nelson, supporting young people excluded from the mainstream education system. She says Daniel is respected by staff and plays an integral part in

giving young people an education experience that meets their often complex needs. Since 2008, Elliot Le Page has provided a weekend and late-night safety net for young people in the Nelson's city centre by working tirelessly as a street ambassador. Elliot's ambassador role sees him working until 4am to de-escalate potentially violent situations and to provide first aid and other emergency support to limit harm from alcohol and other drugs. Tiegan Maru works at the Motueka Recreation Centre and has undertaken Level 3 and Level 4 Certificates in Youth Work to inform her work. Tiegan has also built a group of Motueka High School students into a high-functioning youth governance group, who now have a seat at the Motueka Community Board; and has also developed and delivered an accredited Gateway programme in Sport and Recreation for students from the school.

Postponed auction still on A charity auction that is aiming to raise $50,000 for mental health is on track for its new date. The auction that was slated for September 24, being organised by Nelson College, has been delayed due to concerns around Covid alert levels. The new date of Thursday, October 29, will mean more confidence for those who are working behind the scenes that Nelson College’s biggest charity event yet will go ahead without any issues. The auction, which is being organised by students and the wider parent community from Nelson College, is aiming to raise money to go towards The Key to Life Charitable Trust, which aims to effect a social change to how people view mental health and suicide. One of the many prizes that will be up for auction on the night is a beauty rest silver, medium feel, queen size bed set from Bedpost, valued at $3200. Bedpost Nelson manager Mike Gane says that its ‘fantastic’ to be supporting such a great cause. “This is such a worthy cause to get behind, absolutely, and we’re really proud to be involved.” “When Stanley came in to see us about donating to the auction, it was

Elliot and Mike from Bedpost with a bed they are donating to the Nelson College charity auction. such a good cause, you’d have to be the grinch that killed Christmas to not get on board,” he says. “That’s what it comes down to. It’s worthwhile, and when these actions with mental health are carried out it effects so many people.” Tickets for the auction are continuing to sell out fast. Tickets, which will include a range of fantastic canapes and drinks, can be bought from the Nelson College office, 03 548 3099. Costs for tickets are $400 for a table of 10, and single tickets are $45. If you’d like to offer your support, please give Steve Page a call on 0275449448. Kudos to the tutors The team of ACE Tutors at Waimea College need to be acknowledged for their efforts over 2020 in delivering the range of courses and workshops to adult students in the local community. This has been a trying year and their dedication is reflective of their passion and desire to pass on their knowledge and skills. Post lockdown has seen an increase in demand for people wanting to upskill, learn new skills or just get together with other people with a common interest. In particular, Sewing, Gardening, and Woodwork courses have seen a resurgence with places filling quickly. Also, Te Reo

UPCOMING CLUB ACTIVITIES

A trophy that sports the names of sailing legends Peter Burling and Sir Russell Coutts will be up for grabs in Nelson this weekend.

The 2020 Pic’s Peanut Butter Starling National Championship, originally scheduled for April, takes place September 27-30. Up to sixty of the country’s top young sailors will descend on Nelson waters, all vying for the coveted title. Sailing Manager at Nelson Yacht Club, Tim Fraser-Harris, says the next Team New Zealand captain could be among the 38 North Island and 20 South Island sailors. “It is an iconic class, unique to New Zealand, they are beautiful boats to race and Nelson is a beautiful place to sail.” Tim says with a varied breeze, nice waves and warm weather, Nelson provides a superb setting for the regatta. With the disruption of Covid, the social side of the event has been forced to the wayside with the focus shifting purely to the competition. “We’re looking forward to putting on an awesome sailing regatta.” Tim says they have been fortunate to maintain all its sponsors for the event throughout the uncertainty. “It’s been awesome to keep the support going and we are really grateful they have come on board.”

NYC is looking forward to a packed programme for the summer season, with Opening Day scheduled for the 10th October.

Sally Roff, Ben Roff, Blake Grindley-Jones, Tom Fraser-Harris, Ben Mangin and Gus Hildreth.

With most of the racing set to take place in Tasman Bay, the public will be able to see the starlings coming in and out of the Nelson Harbour. “If people are on the wharf when the boats are launched, they will see some action.” Another aspect of this year’s event has been the drive to ensure a ‘clean regatta.’ “This means no plastic bottles or stickers on the boats that can end up in the ocean.” Since the programme’s inception in 2006, over 2,300 events have shown

their commitments to sustainability by hosting Clean Regattas. The programme has reached over 660,000 sailors and attendees in over 40 countries. The Nelson Yacht Club would like to extend its thanks to the following sponsors: Pic’s Peanut Butter, Nelson City Council and the Nelson Regional Development Agency, Scott Construction, Tall Poppy Real Estate - Nelson/Tasman, Hampidjan & Nelrig, Burnsco, Sealord, Nelson Petroleum (NPD), Sublime Coffee Roasters, Oaklands Milk, Nelson Plastics.

Over the winter, club members have been working hard to give the club’s lower lounge and Penguin’s Nest canteen a well-needed overhaul. They are looking fantastic!! After the Starling Nationals we’ve got 4 more regattas to look forward to - the Nelson & Marlborough Regional Champs, the club’s annual Whakatu regatta, the NZ Kite Foiling Nationals (super exciting!) and the Top of the South Schools Team Racing Regional Champs. We’re also extremely excited to be the ETNZ Fan Zone for Nelson for the 36th America’s Cup in March. The racing will be live on a big screen, and we aim to create a bit of a festival atmosphere down at the club. It’ll be THE place to watch the racing and be part of the excitement. We’ll also be busy with our weekly club racing programme

as well as one of the country’s busiest sailing school operations, providing the opportunity for all in the Nelson & Tasman region to give sailing and watersports a try. For juniors/youths we run afterschool programmes during term time and also our famous holiday courses. More details: http://www.nelsonyachtclub. org.nz/learn-to-sail/juniorwatersports-programme/ For adults there are Tasters, weekly or weekend Learn to Sail and Learn to Windsurf courses, private tuition and provision for supervised hire to practice your skills afterwards. The Sailability Nelson Trust provide disabled Nelsonians with the the opportunity to try sailing. More details on the fantastic work they do can be found here: http://www.sailabilitynelson. org.nz There are also plenty of ways to come and get involved if you’d like to volunteer or support the club. Mako squad thinned thanks to All Blacks Peter Jones The only cloud on the Tasman rugby horizon after they had completed a perfect start to their 2020 Mitre 10 Cup premiership campaign at Lansdowne Park on Friday, is an All Black one. The Mako’s 54-21 win over Northland means the defending champs have claimed maximum points from their first two matches. However, the Tasman ranks are about to be thinned with the All Blacks going into camp on Monday in preparation for their forthcoming international fixtures. After that, the availability of Tasman’s men in black is up to Ian Foster and his fellow selectors. Tyrel Lomax, Quinten Strange, Shannon Frizell, Sevu Reece and Will Jordan, who have been named in the initial All Blacks squad, and possibly utility backs David Havili and Leicester Fainga’anuku may also depart as the three wise men look to enlarge their squad.

The question is, does Tasman have enough depth to maintain their momentum when the stars go away to play? Co-head coach Andrew Goodman thinks so. “There is going to be guys getting more opportunities now with more minutes, so it’s going to be exciting to see how they perform when they are given the opportunity to put their hand up.â€? There was no denying the All Black contingent’s impact on Friday night’s game. Reece bagged three tries, Jordan’s silky running sliced Northland open repeatedly, although he kicked more than usual, Lomax was at the core of a formidable scrum and Frizell was simply superb. However, they were certainly not the only players to shine. Goodman was generally happy with his side’s effort, despite conceding three tries. “The start was good ‌ the forwards set a great platform, carried well with good body height and got us go-forward

2.05pm in Nelson. It is likely the Mooloo men will also be without some of their stars as the competition returns to its normal, All Blacks-free,

appearance. In some ways the “real NPC begins next week, and Tasman couldn’t have wished for a better start.

Jock unbeaten on 74 years Locally Owned and Operated

Over the next few months, sports reporter Jonty Dine is putting the spotlight on our off-field superstars. These people work tirelessly to make sport in our region happen - without trophies or medals to recognise their efforts. The region’s oldest active cricketer, Jock Sutherland is still donning the whites for Wakatu at 74 years of age. Other than losing a bit of zip in his step, Jock says he can still contribute to his club. “They’ve moved me to slip to avoid blemishes in the field,” he jokes. “Quick singles aren’t straight forward but, apart from that, I’m as good as I ever was.” An opening batsman by trade, Jock says these days he is happy to slot in the order wherever there is a vacancy. “I’ll play when a side is short. I don’t want to stop a kid from enjoying his Saturday because of a fellah like me that’s had his day. I’d feel guilty about that, so it’s only when the phone rings.” Despite his best years being behind him, Jock is no liability in the team. “I get a few runs, nothing to write home about, I’m more there to hold up one end.” He may not have scored any centuries in his career, but he sure frustrated the hell out of plenty of bowlers. “I don’t give my wicket away easy, so a few bowlers came down the pitch and had a go, accused me of being stroke-less. I could stick around for

a while, or I tried to.” Jock admits the hand-eye coordination isn’t quite what it used to be, but his competitive nature keeps him coming back to his beloved Victory Square. “When I make a mess of things I say I’m going to retire, then a few days later I’m keen to have another go.” It’s not just the on-field experiences that Jock treasures. “The comradery after is important I quite enjoy it at the bar, you play you best cricket at the bar.” There has been a plethora of highlights as a player over his 40 plus year career. “We won a few championships over the years and you don’t forget them, or just getting a game when you didn’t expect the phone to ring.” Jock says there are no other players in Nelson close to his age. He has, of course, been on the receiving end of plenty of banter by younger players. “Sometimes the slip cordon of young kids have a few cracks, call me ‘grandad’, say ‘this guy is too old

to trouble us.’” Naturally, the veteran is too experienced to give anything back. “You’re silly to do that, because if they’re proven right, they think they’re pretty smart.” He prefers to answer their criticism with his bat, still possessing enough power to hit the occasional boundary. “If it’s a bad ball and I manage

to get the timing right, then there’s no need to say anything, you just give them a little look.” It has been some years since he has cleared the rope though. The Nelson stalwart has given more than 40 years’ service to the game, starting as president of the Wakatu Cricket Club in the mid-1970s. His appointment came the day of the team photo as Jock, being

a lawyer, was the only player to own a suit. Jock’s efforts were recognised in the form of a Queens Service Medal in 2015. Playing is where his true passion lies, however, and says as long as it holds up, he will be out in the middle. “I’d prefer to be playing than to be spending all day in a meeting.”

Nelson College is synonymous with New Zealand rugby tradition. The school was the first to play a competitive game in New Zealand 150 years ago and next week will write another chapter in its storied history as it hosts the 94th edition of the Quadrangular Tournament - the world’s oldest college rugby competition. Speed demon conquers 100km Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Holly Ward’s legs are, more often than not, sporting some pretty gnarly cuts and grazes. The 16-year-old inline skater has broken bones and smashed her teeth after taking a number of hard falls at high speed. However, Holly rolls with the punches she takes in a sport where pain is inevitable. “I used to be afraid of crashing, but you have to go for it and if it happens, it happens. There is nothing you can do about it.” The diminutive speed demon says the slightest mistake, even by another skater, can result in carnage as skin meets gravel with only one winner. “You do get the really bad ones,

but you get used to having the little ones.” Holly’s tenacity was recently on full display as she completed a marathon skate of 100km at Timaru’s Levels Raceway. This was no casual Sunday skate in the park, with competitors averaging speeds of 34kmh. The Nayland College student was the only female who hadn’t dropped out before the 50km mark, leaving her with the choice of skating alone or trying to keep pace with the men. “I chose to keep with the males because skating alone is not fun for that distance, and it was quite windy as well.” With her previous longest skate being 42km, Holly says she almost hit a wall after 60km. “I still had 40 to go, I was only halfway, and my feet were really

sore.” However, fuelled by Powerade and lollies from her back pocket, Holly refused to give in. “I just kept pushing through it. I told myself ‘if you drop off, you’re not going to finish and there is no point in coming all this way not to finish’. I got to 80km and I felt a lot better.” After more than three and a half hours of non-stop skating, Holly had reached her Everest. “It was so good to cross the finish and think ‘I just did 100km.’” Besides some seriously swollen and blistered feet, Holly was ecstatic to have completed the marathon effort. She has no plans to skate that distance again anytime soon but may return next year to defend her title.

Locally Owned and Operated

The 100km had long been a goal of Holly’s. She started skating at eight-yearsold when she saw another young girl zipping around the Tāhunanui Skating Rink. “She looked really fast and I thought that was cool. Her dad gave me a flyer and from there it was all go.” Under the tutelage of Alan and Anna Bartlett, Holly has since

gone on to represent New Zealand at competitions in Australia and Indonesia and now has her sights set on Junior Worlds in Columbia next year. She says her ultimate dream is to see her sport one day gain entry to Olympics. “I love going fast and it’s just a fun sport, it’s different, most people don't know what it is.”
