‘Protect us’ say Monaco residents New sea-level rise forecasts prompts concern from residents Erin Bradnock Some Monaco residents are ‘frustrated’ at the Nelson City Council and believe their

community has been ignored following the flooding and sea-level rise projections released last week. The council launched their virtual coastal inundation map last week,

demonstrating the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels through Nelson. Monaco, a thin peninsular jutting out from Nayland, is predicted as one of the

first areas to be vastly impacted by sea-level rise as early as 2060. Rosie Muster has been a Monaco resident for 32 years and says she feels “frustrated” at the lack of

communication and protection for their community following the impacts of cyclones in 2018.

‘Take diabetes seriously or end up like me’ Jonty Dine As a young man, Shane Torrance believed he was bulletproof. Shane played sport, had a physicallyintensive job, would eat and drink as he pleased and gave little regard for his health. So when, at 20-years-old, he was found to have type one diabetes, Shane more or less disregarded the diagnosis. “I was straight onto insulin four times a day and being told ‘you can’t eat this, you can’t do that,’ but I was doing it anyway. My control was pretty poor, I didn’t look after myself.” Shane’s lifestyle would eventually catch up with him.

“Why is the council not doing something to protect us?” she says. During tropical cyclone Fehi in February of 2018, many Monaco homes were evacuated, flooded and destroyed. Rosie and her partner were some of those residents who experienced severe flooding damage. They lost historical family documents and paid thousands for a residential sea wall in the front of their property, an expense also adopted by other neighbouring residents. While Rosie and other Monaco residents understand the risks of living seaside, some are questioning why more has not been done to protect the area from coastal inundation. “We pay the highest rates for nothing,” says Rosie, who

questioned why the road had not been raised or why storm piping had not been installed in the area. Monaco resident Ian Fenemor says he is still waiting to hear from the council regarding a plan against coastal inundation. “I would’ve thought the council would do something,” he says. Despite living seaside and being impacted by the 2018 flooding, Rosie, Ian and other neighbours have yet to hear directly from the council regarding the future of their area. According to the council, a letter to 4500 residents in these at-risk coastal areas was sent out last week but Rosie along with other Monaco residents have yet to receive their letters. Council projections show sea levels may rise 0.5m from the year 2075 if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. In

Mayor Rachel Reese says, "there are no surprises" in the newly-released data and says she doesn’t want Nelsonians to panic. However, Monaco

resident Rosie Ross believes the council’s announcement has left some residents “panicky” and confused, as houses continue to sell in the area. The council are holding a community consultation period up until December 18 including drop-in sessions in Stoke and The Wood.

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A former Stoke resident is so terrified of what might have become of her beloved cat that she moved out of the area after a ‘frightening’ run-in with her neighbour. The woman, who did not want to be named, told the Nelson Weekly of the incident where her cat went missing late last year. She was told by neighbours that another neighbour had found it and she needed to go round and collect her. Her cat had previously had to be collected late at night after climbing onto her neighbour’s roof. When she arrived, she was greeted by David Riddell, who handed her a note saying that her cat “molests” his pet birds every day and he had resolved to “catch and kill” the cat. However, in the spirit of Christmas he said that he would give the cat back with a warning. “Next time it repeats trespass, it will die,” he wrote. The woman says she was very frightened by the encounter. She was led into David’s backyard where she saw a cat in a trap.

3

Part of the letter which was written to a Stoke neighbour threatening to kill her cat. Photo: Supplied. However, it was not her own. The woman then left the house in tears worried what might become of that cat. Her own cat was never seen again, and she moved out of the area soon afterwards for fear that she might run into her neighbour again. When contacted by the Weekly, David Riddell said he did not “hate cats” but just wanted his neighbours to exercise greater control over their animals. He said that it was not appropriate for the woman’s cat to be climbing on his roof late at night. He would not explicitly deny that he had killed any cats in the past other than to repeat again and again that his neighbours “have nothing to be concerned about at all”. The Weekly understands that there have been previous complaints made to agencies about David’s actions regarding cats.

Legally, cats are allowed to trespass, and their owner is not usually liable for any damage they do. Nelson SPCA manager Donna Walzl says that a complaint was made about the incident, but they were unable to get to the bottom of it. Police were also contacted. “If a cat comes on your property you are not allowed to kill it. That’s against the law,” she says. Donna says it can be a “difficult situation” to manage as cats like to wander but there are options. These included talking to owners about potentially keeping the cat indoors or to the complainant about how to make their properties less attractive to felines. She says that the SPCA wants to hear about any situations where those encounters escalate and result in animals potentially being harmed.

First home buyers struggle as Nelson housing market goes 'nuts' Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Courtney Archer and her partner Lucas Hall are reaching for the first rung on the property ladder, but they are struggling to grasp it. On paper, the Stoke couple tick all the boxes. But in reality - it’s not enough to get their foot in the door of their first property. “It’s got to the point where we’re putting offers on anything, just because it’s a house and we might be able to afford it,” says Courtney. According to an urban development capacity report received by Nelson City Council earlier this month, median house prices in both Nelson and Tasman have increased by around 60 per cent in the past five years. Courtney and Lucas started house hunting just before Covid-19. They have been pre-approved for a home loan up to $600,000 and have made multiple offers on houses. They both work full-time, Courtney sometimes up to 60 70 hours a week. “The whole house hunting thing

I’m on Trade Me every day looking at the latest listings. We’re putting offers on things that nobody else has seen yet and we still get outbid.”

She says she has found process “mentally draining” and they are considering building or even moving to Christchurch if they can’t secure a property.

“My question is, what are the Government going to do to help us?” Owner of You Realty, Nikki Ryan, describes the situation as “nuts”, estimating that first home buyers make up around 50 per cent of the prospective buyers she meets. “It’s not unusual for a first home buyers’ budget to be $750,000 and yet they are still struggling. That’s saying huge things.” She says if buyers are using a Kiwisaver first home withdrawal it can put them on the backfoot as it can take around ten working days to process applications. Nikki says it’s a tight race, and buyers need to get involved “very early on”. “As soon as it goes on Trade Me, you need to get onto it.” She says with drop in supply and a surge in demand, things don’t seem to be cooling off. “Everyone is out there trying to take advantage of the good interest rates.” The urban development capacity report also states that the number of applicants on the Ministry of Social Development’s housing register has increased by 49 per

cent for Nelson and 14 per cent for Tasman, compared with 12 months ago. Cr Rohan O'Neill-Stevens labelled the figures as “bloody depressing”. “It breaks my heart and it also in some ways breaks my hope when we see this constant upwards slog of house prices and rents well above increases in income.” Deputy mayor Judene Edgar echoed his concerns. “We’ve got people with children who are both working in what should be good income jobs that can’t afford houses - and that is a situation we should never be in.” Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says the Government has a number of initiatives to increase housing supply through building affordable housing, changes to urban development legislation and the upcoming reform of the Resource Management Act. "We also have a number of programmes to help people buy their own homes including a Progressive Home Ownership scheme, and First Home Grants and Loans, which now have a deposit requirement of 5 per cent, reduced from 10 per cent.”

Police honoured after long investigation into suspicious death in Stoke Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The Nelson police officers behind an arduous investigation into a suspicious death four years ago have been honoured for their work in bringing a woman’s killers to justice. Three members of the Nelson CIB received commendations

for their professionalism and commitment to Operation Barley - an investigation into the death of Tracey-Ann Harris who was discovered in her Stoke home in February 2016. A difficult and prolonged investigation into the circumstances of her death followed, culminating in the arrest of two people in early 2018 charged with her murder.

A further 18 months of meticulous work followed in preparation for the trial which took place in the High Court at Nelson during August and September 2019, with both accused being found guilty of murder. The dedication of the investigation team was recognised with the presentation of a District Commander’s

commendation to Detectives Bronwyn Inglis and Jonathan Evans, while Detective Sergeant Ian Langridge received a Commissioner’s Commendation for his leadership. It has been a tough two years for the Tasman Police, from helping battle the Pigeon Valley Fires to enforcing a national lockdown. However, police officers rose to

the challenge and went beyond the call of duty in service to our community. To honour our heroes in blue, a ceremony was held at the Old St John’s Hall on Friday afternoon. Among the acknowledged were long service awards and commendations for actions taken during the evacuation of Wakefield as well as the attempted rescue of a kayaker.

The crowds at the Golden Edge Nelson A&P Show enjoyed the best of weather over the weekend. Bright sunshine with just enough periods of cloud cover to keep cool. “We’re so pleased with the end result,” says A&P Association manager Annette Robinson. “We’ve had great feedback regarding the events part of the show and the new layout plus the reduced gate price were also crowd-pleasers. Stall holders were blown away with the seas of people queuing before them.” The helicopter rides, which have been a big part of the show, were also flat out with queues this year. Annette says maybe people are thinking it’s more important to get out and make the most of events in the region. English school pivots to teach residents Charles Anderson When Covid-19 forced New Zealand to close the country’s borders Miles Fitton flipped a coin. It was to decide whether he should follow suit and close the Nelson English Centre entirely or try to keep it open. “At the beginning of Covid, who knew,” says the centre’s chief executive. Before lockdown, the centre had 80 students from all over the world, along with 14 staff. Then, almost all those students left and went home. Staff were made redundant and scraped by on government subsidies. But now the school has had a lifeline – a government grant programme that deploys teachers to instead help Nelson residents who have never formally studied English. They currently have 20 students ranging in age from in the 30s to in their late 70s and from countries like Japan, Belarus, Afghanistan, and Latvia. Some have been in the country for more than 20 years. “Some have never had the opportunity,” Miles says. “Or they have been in a niche which meant they never needed to. But now they are loving the language.” The eight-week course is free for students.

Nelson residents Yukiyasu Uda, Larisa Dzonza, Akiko Crowther, Ksenia and Serge Pashkevich, Toshimi Kashihara, and Sofija Petrovic have all been learning English as part of a grant to help locals. Photo: Charles Anderson. Yuko Yamamoto has been in New Zealand almost 18 years but says she never prioritised learning English as she raised her children. “Now I have extra time. It lets me learn more about New Zealand culture, it’s so nice and everybody is so friendly.” Serge and Ksenia Pashkevich arrived in Nelson from Belarus three years ago but since have worked from home. “It just means that we don’t get enough speaking experience,” says Serge. “That’s why we are here – we want to improve our writing and speaking skills,” says Ksenia. “It is vital, and we are loving it.” Larisa Dzonza came to New Zealand

from Latvia 14 years ago but never learned English formally. “I want to fit into society more. I also like to read scientific magazines, and sometimes there are complicated words there. This course helps me recognise them. Even on the TV, I can understand the news more.” Akiko Crowther been here for 15 years working as a calligrapher, but recently her husband, who is English, had a stroke. She knew that she had to take learning the language more seriously. “Suddenly my conversation is much better. I went to dinner with friends and I could hear their conversation in detail. It was so delightful. It’s a wonderful

experience.” It has also allowed Miles to hire back almost all his staff and he hopes by the time the grant scheme finishes, the country’s border situation will be clearer. “This has been a rollercoaster year - do we shut it down, do we hibernate? My gut feeling was to stay open and do whatever you can to stay alive.” So now he is on a mission to help 50 other residents who want to learn English as a second language, before June next year. “It’s a really great way to invest in our Nelson population and our teachers. All that money stays here, everything stays in the Nelson community.”

‘Take diabetes seriously or end up like me’ FROM PAGE 1 November is Diabetes Action Month - an awareness campaign that focuses on educating New Zealanders about diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune disease usually caused by the body's immune system destroying insulin-producing cells, eventually making the insulin-producing organ, the pancreas, useless. Shane was passing out at work, thirsty all the time, and would often feel like he was being “boiled from the inside”. It began with burst blood vessels in the back of his eye which needed to be scraped out. This led to him becoming legally blind. Next the disease began to attack his extremities. An ulcer on his middle toe required amputation and doctors implored Shane to stay home and put his feet up. But with a wife and kids to support, Shane persisted with his manual work as a painter decorator. “The side of my foot went mushy, so they did surgery and put some screws in which held me up for about two years, but then it started to fall again.” Suffering incredible pain, Shane then made the difficult decision

Shane Torrance had to relearn to walk after losing his legs. Photo: Jonty Dine. to have his right leg removed from the knee down. With his left leg having to bear the extra weight, it took only two years before the effects took their toll and Shane became a double amputee. Shane had to adapt to life on crutches and in wheelchairs as he awaited prosthetics. He required a lot of counselling to deal with the loss of limbs and eyesight. “There was no way it was going

to get me, but it did. It can get anybody, I got very depressed from not being able to function properly.” Once fitted with his new legs, Shane had to relearn how to walk. “I thought my life would be over physically, I had to sit and watch other people walk, but it only took about a week of slowly thinking about where to put my feet and I was away.” It was during this period that

Shane made significant changes in his life. He got himself an insulin pump, a diabetes nurse, overhauled his diet and stopped drinking. “I wish I had given it up earlier, I wouldn’t be alive today if I hadn’t.” Shane also started volunteering at Presbyterian Support, working in the kitchen or just generally connecting with the residents. The new lifestyle would drastically improve Shane’s health and mental well-being.

“Life with diabetes is a 24-hour thing, you have to be on top of things to run properly, you don’t get Sundays off.” Shane says it was a costly lesson. “I might still have my eyesight and be able to work if I had listened to the professionals. You need to do the right things rather than try to live life like everyone else, you can’t ignore it and I did for a long time.” Diabetes has also badly affected Shane’s family, his twin brother being diagnosed at 37 and his daughter having lost an eye. “It can be very debilitating, it never gives up, every meal, every exercise, you have to plan. It’s a real hassle, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.” Shane says a good diabetic does the same thing every day. “I didn’t listen to the doctors, but my advice is to take it seriously or you’ll end up like me.” The 57-year-old has since enjoyed a much more active life, completing the Wairua Warrior obstacle course with some friends, and joining a wheelchair basketball league. “I’ve got four kids and if I give up, they think they can give up too.” Shane hopes his experience can be a cautionary tale for diabetics. “You have to change your life, or it will kill you.”

Health boss spends Clarrie’s history of life, $22k on travel rugby and war Tracy Neal of RNZ Nelson-Marlborough Health's top boss spent just over $22,000 on flights, accommodation, meals and airport parking in the year to June, including a $9.20 coffee with the mayor of Tasman just hours before alert level 3 began. The total was less than the previous year's $25,886, when overseas travel gobbled up $4522 of the budget on a seven-day trip to London. Peter Bramley's early morning coffee catch-up with Tasman Mayor Tim King happened during alert level 2, a few hours before alert level 3 was imposed on 23 March. Level 2 of a four-tiered alert level system was introduced on 21 March to try and manage Covid-19 in New Zealand. On 25 March, New Zealand moved to alert level 4, putting all of New Zealand into a full lockdown in which only trips for essential

needs were allowed, and essential workers were the only people allowed to leave home for work. A health board spokesperson confirmed that Bramley visited Blenheim's Wairau Hospital on two occasions during level 4 lockdown, in his essential service role to provide management support to clinical teams and the primary health organisation clinical teams. The visit included minor spending on meals and accommodation and Bramley also attended, by Zoom, a meeting for South Island health board chief executives. Bramley was until recently seconded to the Canterbury/ West Coast District Health Board to help with the board's transition to a new chief executive. The expense form showed the majority of the total $22,133.59 travel expenditure went on domestic travel around New Zealand. Just under $4000 was spent

on "local" travel between Nelson and Marlborough, and a little more than $1000 was spent on overseas accommodation booked for April, but cancelled because of Covid-19. The single largest expense in the local travel budget line was $450 spent on meals for 10 people at an end-of-year event last December. On one occasion more than $600 was spent on flights from Nelson to Auckland and Wellington, and back to Nelson in a day for a national district health board chief executives' meeting. A similar amount was spent on flights between Nelson, Wellington and Christchurch in March this year for a chief executives' meeting and a South Island regional boards induction day. In the 2018-2019 financial year, $19,000 was spent on domestic travel and related expenses and more than $2000 on local expenses. Total travel expenses the year before that were $26,639.56.

Jacqui Rawson At 95-years-of age Clarrie Maskill life is filled with wonderful tales of meeting princes, playing international rugby and being part of a New Zealand’s artillery division. Named after a packet of Clarence-brand cigarettes, Clarrie began life in a tent in Cromwell, Otago where he says his family “didn’t have two bob to rub together”. They finally ended up in Wellington where Clarrie got into wrestling, boxing, lifesaving, and rugby. He started a cabinetry course at technical college when he was 13-years-old. After finishing his apprenticeship, he moved to Nelson where he took up a cabinetry role and ended up playing representative rugby for Nelson. Two years later, at 24-years of age, he joined 4000 other New Zealand volunteer soldiers answering the call from the United Nations for volunteers to join the Korean War. “I volunteered and it was something I never regretted, not something I’d want to go through again, but it was a wonderful experience,” Clarrie says. Part of that could be due to his ship being held up in Sydney on its way to Korea and getting the chance to meet his future wife, Eugenie with whom he later moved to Nelson with.

Clarrie Maskill reflects on his 95-years of yarns. Photo: Jacqui Rawson.

Clarrie started out as a Lance Bombardier and rose through the ranks to Battery Sergeant Major in charge of the 161 battery over his two years in Korea. “The New Zealand artillery were very good and very clever,” say Clarrie. Rugby was a welcome distraction and Clarrie joined the artillery team that toured around Japan in 1952 in response to rugby authority’s keenness to get Japan playing some international rugby. Clarrie became a successful business owner after the war, taking on the first Luxaflex blinds franchise with stores in Dunedin and Christchurch, as well as Nelson. Clarrie says his dad came up with his name while sitting in a pub wetting the baby’s head. His eye was drawn by a packet of Clarence cigarettes and “that was that”.

Freemasons still waiting a year after 'devastating' fire Locally Owned and Operated

Erin Bradnock It’s been over a year since Nelson’s Masonic Hall was significantly damaged by a fire and the future of the building is still on hold. Nelson Freemason representative and district grand master Ian McLean says no decision has been finalised regarding the future of the Nile St building as they are still waiting to hear back from their insurance company. “We’ve been having to meet at various halls around Nelson. Would be nice to have our own space again,” says Ian. No one was injured in the fire which Ian says was caused by an electrical fault on November 5, last year. However, the Masonic Hall faced extensive damage across the foyer and meeting rooms. The freemason group had been at the site since 1990. Ian says they were able to retrieve some furniture from the site this

week to be cleaned, but historic items and community groups’ belongings were lost to the blaze. “Hopefully the decision is coming back to us soon,” he says. "There's so many community groups that use the building it's just absolutely devastating.” Kahurangi Irish Dance school was one of these community groups and they had been at the Masonic Hall for over a decade. Head teacher Lianna Connor says she burst into tears when she first heard news of the fire, the group lost paperwork, costumes and their speaker system. "It was devastating," she says. Lianna wanted to thank the generosity of Beggs Music Nelson who donated new speakers to the group. While they are situated at the Tāhunanui Community Hub, Lianna says they are still looking for a permanent space one year on.

editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonweekly.co.nz

It’s not the speed that is causing the accidents, it’s a lot of poor judgment when it comes to the intersections. I have seen a lot of people who don’t have the patience to wait just a few minutes. Shaun Duff

Your Voice Big 80kmh slowdown on SH6: I'll be very surprised if this doesn't cause more problems than it solves. Mike Puke As a person qualified in road and traffic engineering, I agree with the truck driver, but partially agree with the NZTA. I have always thought 100kmh is too fast along the Marybank to Nelson stretch of SH6 as there are many side roads to 50kmh zones. I think lowering the limit from Rai Valley to Blenheim may cause frustrated drivers to do risky overtakes. Rather than implement blanket speed limits, we need tailored limits that are appropriate for various sections of the road. Other factors that need addressing are the condition of the road and the safety of the road design as well as the elephant in the room - driver training (and re-testing). Driving shouldn't be a right just as it isn't for a pilot. It should be more strictly controlled. Doug Barry-Martin What amazes me is the road is the best it’s ever been and now they drop the speed limit? That's some really backward thinking. Chrissie Small Thank goodness, about time. Jo Duncan Maybe the speed limit is being put in place because that road bleeds so much sticky tar and if you go too fast all the tar and chip will run off the road. Darryn Gray

Heather’s heart for helping nets award: She was our marriage celebrant, the most lovely lady. Well deserved. Megan Burn

The Cash for Christmas elf, AKA Matthew Edgar, has been busy picking up entries for this year’s competition. Tess Jaine from Shine on Hardy St says they have seen a steady stream of customers getting in on the action. They are one of 32 local shops in Nelson who are getting behind the competition, run by Nelson Weekly and Uniquely Nelson. It gives people the chance to win hundreds of dollars in vouchers every week and also puts them in the draw for a grand prize of $5000 cash. All you have to do is enter your details wherever you see the ‘Cash for Christmas’ entry box at local retailers. Photo: Charles Anderson Many of the deaths were caused by vehicles way exceeding the speed limit, so lowering it isn’t going to change much. There needs to be more safe passing lanes and passing bays. And lowering the speed limits won’t address the deaths caused by drugs and alcohol. What about actually fixing the roads? Top of the South roads are the worst maintained roads we drive on in the South Island. Diane Chandler I'm no scientist but 80kmh is spot on in some areas, some should be lower, but in the good stretches it should remain 100kmh. Isn't it so narrowminded that they come up with ideas themselves? Rayon Mackenzie

Thousands submitted, nobody listening. There are 20 places to pull in to pass and no signs. Remove frustration and start there. Glen Jarvie Has anyone noticed that no one has died on the Appleby to Maisey 80kmhzone? Not one loved one. Zero deaths sounds pretty good to me. Jacqui Irwin It's cheaper to replace 100kmh signs with 80kmh signs than install median barriers which actually save lives - but that would make sense so we can't have that. Troy Dando I was sure that when the public was consulted on

this, the very strong voice was to improve roads, do not decrease speeds. Danny Frans It is driver skills and the lack of care that have been the reason behind a lot of these accidents. Then add to the problem of the road, the lack of passing bays mean that to overtake you have to travel on into the other lane. All that money spent on the Rai Saddle, what a waste of time and coin. Wonder if those who made the call even came down and looked it over? Brian Bishop It’s all money gathering, more tickets for speeding. Noel Roberts

She is a beautiful soul, lovely lady and holds a special place in our hearts. Congratulations, Heather. Tash Mehrtens

Congratulations, Heather. Many citizens have benefited from your advice - always given with a smile. Warren Tilley & Carol Tilley

Congratulations, Heather. Great for you to have some recognition for all the time and effort you have volunteered on our behalf. Marion Whyte

Congratulations, Heather. Good to see volunteers such as yourself recognised. Glenda Buschl Thank you all for your congratulations. I've enjoyed every minute - the learning, the variety, the people, my colleagues - and being able to make some's day just a little brighter makes me feel good, too. Heather Thomas Nicest person. Master builders honoured at awards A home located on the banks of the Maitai River has come away with the supreme renovation award at the local Master Builders House of the Year awards. The home, renovated by Jason Gardiner Builders Limited, won the title for a complex renovation that required a high level of care and skill to carry out, according to judges. The house was redesigned with a partial demolition and new foundations, floor and walls. New internal stairs and steel

beams were needed to provide support for the upper deck and bracing. Windows were well positioned to maximise the winter sun and make the most of the river views. “The renovation has been so well done that it is hard to see what was existing and what is new,” judges said. “The finished result is beautiful.” Salter Builders Limited won the Altus Window Systems New Home $750,000 - $1 million category. Its fourbedroom house is set into the

hillside in Wakapuaka with steps that lead down from the entry to the open plan living area. It also has wide views of Tasman Bay. “Polished concrete floors are beautifully finished and create a heat sink for the sun from the north-facing windows,” judges said. “Birch ply ceilings and the living room joinery have been fitted with precision. The kitchen is a hub of this home and is very functional. The spectacular tiled splashback is beautifully fitted.”

Stay safe around power lines when doing jobs at your place If you’re catching up on home maintenance but working around electricity there are a few things to watch out for. Any work around electricity lines can be dangerous. Here are some important tips to help you stay safe while you do common jobs around your property. POWER LINES SAFETY FOR OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE If you’re checking or cleaning gutters and downpipes, painting the roof or eaves, or doing a job anywhere near the connection of the power lines to your house it’s important to know what to do to stay safe. Sometimes the power line can cross your property and drop quite low, or go across other structures such as a garage or a shed. Be aware of the location of the service line to your home when you’re planning how to do a job. If you’re planting trees, building fences or doing jobs on something tall in your driveway it’s always important to look up and around you to see where power lines are and keep away from them. Service Line

If you need to carry out work near your service line you can have the power disconnected temporarily for safety. The safety disconnection service can be provided by one of Network Tasman’s approved contractors, listed on our website at www.networktasman.co.nz/new-connections WASHING WALLS NEAR METER BOXES Remember, water and electricity don’t mix. So if you’re waterblasting your external walls keep away from the meter box. Water inside the meter box can cause problems. TREE TRIMMING AROUND LINES Be aware of the danger of trees connecting with the service line that goes from power poles on the street to your property. If you think your trees are getting too close to the line then it’s important to get the right advice and help to trim them back. Option 1: You can contact a network trained arborist to take care of the work as they’re trained to carry out this type of work safely. There is a list of network trained arborists on our website (visit www.networktasman.co.nz/trees-power-lines) Option 2: The power can be temporarily disconnected using the safety disconnection service so you or your contractor (e.g., a gardener) can do the work safely. (visit www.networktasman.co.nz/keep-yourself-safe). If you have a question you can email the specialists in our team at trees@networktasman.co.nz. We’re happy to provide advice to help keep you safe.

Creators Martin and Andy Dawson chose the image of a bowler-hatted gentlemen -an archetypal stockbroker to reflect the fact that historically England is the home of gin. Broker’s is a seriously good gin made in FOR MATES! a 200 year old distillery in the heart of England using a traditional copper pot-still. The recipe is as old as the distillery. A quadruple-distilled pure grain spirit made from English wheat is redistilled with ten traditional botanicals, creating a gin of outstanding flavour and smoothness.

Growing mos for a good cause Sara Hollyman The Chevron, horseshoe and a simple beardstache are all making appearances at CLM this month in pursuit of men’s health. CLM’s ‘Mo Bro’s are a team of 15 men from the organisation who have united in the pursuit of the ultimate moustache to raise awareness and funds for Movember NZ, which tackles men’s health issues - from cancer to mental health. The team will host a Movember Breakfast and Charity Auction this Friday morning at Greenmeadows Community Centre with guest speakers Tyson Hullena, Chris Jack and Paul Hampton. Mo Bro, Dave McKenzie, says this year has been tough on everyone which makes it all the more

important for the community to rally around each other. “Some people are just battling through and the more help we can provide for the people that need it will be good.” Trafalgar Centre manager Mark Mekalick says the awareness is just as important as the funds raised. “Yes, it’s great to be able to fundraise and make some money for a great cause, but also to create that awareness to get checked out if things are going wrong and speak up if you’re not ok.” Mark says the team’s wives are “not too impressed” with the range of facial hair but understand it’s for a good cause. They hope to raise $5000 through the event. For donations or ticket enquiries contact mark@clmnz.co.nz

Major upgrade to Salisbury/Champion Road roundabout underway

TŌ TĀTOU WHAKATŪ

Tasman District Council contractors have begun work to improve the roundabout at the intersection of Salisbury and Champion Roads. This will include adding extra lanes to cope with increasing traffic, work to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians and taking the opportunity to make improvements to the water supply reticulation and other services at the same time.

Issue 109 • 25 November 2020

Stage One of the works occurs prior to Christmas. Disruption will be minimal as it mainly involves work on the water supply alongside the road and construction of a one-way access road off the Richmond Deviation (SH6) into Champion Road west (by the Richmond Aquatic Centre). Stage two starts in January 2021 and will have an impact on traffic flow. Work at the roundabout will be done in four sections so the directions you will be able to travel in will change as the work progresses.

Keep up to date with the latest news from Nelson City Council

Two things will stay the same throughout the project:

Mayor Rachel Reese presented the ‘Key to the City of Nelson’ to Black Ferns Captain Eloise Blackwell on Friday at a special ceremony following the Captain’s Run ahead of the Black Ferns vs Barbarians match at Trafalgar Park in Nelson. Photo: Mayor Rachel Reese and local rugby players from left, Ellanna Scott Rollason, Hunter Nicholls, Madison Greenaway and Lucy Mahuika with the Black Ferns.

• You will always be able to go straight through the roundabout travelling between Richmond and Stoke. • You will not be able to turn right from any direction on the roundabout.

Nelson City Council releases coastal inundation map viewer for feedback

Traffic will move more slowly through the works due to speed restrictions and lane changes, so consider taking an alternative route if one is available. A temporary roundabout will be installed at the Templemore/Salisbury intersection to accommodate traffic detoured from Champion Road, via Kareti and Templemore Drives. The work is scheduled to finish by July 2021. This project is managed by Tasman District Council. Construction queries or urgent issues can be raised with Fulton Hogan on 547 9789, and more general queries about the project can be answered by Tasman District Council on 543 8400. For a map showing the temporary road layout in place from January visit: shape.nelson.govt.nz/champion-road-roundabout

ROAD CLOSURES

“The uncertainty of climate change and sea level rise means that we can only project what we know could happen, not what will happen.” The maps and process for engagement are closely related to the work Tasman District Council started in 2019 and will help us build on existing shared approaches to hazard management. Further coastal erosion and modelling work will be completed in early 2021.

Community input from 18 November to 18 December The maps and a feedback form are available online at shape.nelson.govt.nz/coastal-hazards. We need to hear about the things that are important to you that may be impacted by rising sea levels. These may be areas, objects or experiences that you value - whether your own assets, beach access, community facilities, heritage items or coastal habitats for shorebirds and other native species. We will also be asking you to share your observations of coastal hazards in our city – building on the information we received in 2019.

There are many ways to get involved • Go to shape.nelson.govt.nz to view the maps, answer our short survey, share your observations of coastal hazards and provide any comments on the coastal inundation map viewer. • Attend a drop-in session (see details below) • View the maps and pick up a survey form from Civic House, 110 Trafalgar Street or at the Elma Turner Library. Find out more at our Community drop-in session on Thursday 26 November 2020, from 4-6.30pm at Trafalgar Park Pavilion, 30 Trafalgar Street, The Wood. This is a great chance to look at the coastal inundation maps and talk to our experts on this topic. We welcome your feedback until 18 December 2020. Further engagement is planned for 2021 on this issue.

MEETINGS

nelson.govt.nz/meetings

The science is clear that our climate is changing and will continue to do so in the future. The New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010 requires Nelson City Council to identify areas that are potentially affected by coastal hazards, giving priority to identifying areas at high risk of being affected, and to assess hazard risks over at least 100 years. We already account for sea level rise in new developments and now we want to better prepare our communities for the long term impacts of climate change, including ongoing changes to weather patterns and rising sea levels. This conversation is not new for many, nor is it unique to Nelson. It is occurring in coastal communities all around New Zealand as well as globally. We’ve published a coastal inundation map viewer on shape.nelson.govt.nz. The map viewer uses a ‘bathtub model’ to show the potential effects of future sea level rise and coastal inundation, the flooding of low-lying coastal land with seawater, on Nelson’s coast. It shows land that is vulnerable to the impacts of sea level rise from present day up to a 2-metre sea level rise scenario – a scenario predicted to be beyond the year 2150. Residents will be able to search for their own property and view the different scenarios. All owners of properties within the potentially impacted area (approximately 4500 properties), have received a letter letting them know that as we now hold this information, we are required to include the information on Land Information Memorandums (LIMs). Mayor Rachel Reese says that people should view the maps as a starting point for finding out more about how their own property, or places they value like beaches and estuaries, could be affected at different sea levels. “We really want people to come and talk with us and let us know what places they value along the coastline, and their experiences with coastal inundation. Our maps are based on the best information we have at the moment, but we value any further information or discussion based on people’s own experience and knowledge.”

Decking the city with Christmas delight Christmas is coming to Nelson’s city centre as Santa’s elves prepare his grotto, new decorations arrive and a resplendent Christmas tree is chosen. The crowning glory of this year’s Nelson City Council Christmas decorations is a live Christmas tree, which will be installed and decorated at the top of Trafalgar St on 9–10 December. The tree stands at more than 6-metres tall, and will be adorned with lights, baubles, stars, chains and Christmas cracker decorations made with the help of Community Art Works. The tree is going up a little later than the street decorations, which will be installed from 30 November, to ensure its continued vibrancy through to the big day. New to the decoration collection this year is a series of Kiwiana Christmas-themed flags, which will be hung using the flag poles throughout the city centre. Joining them will be 1m wide tree wraps, adorned with images of birds, Christmas decorations used in previous years, and 1.5m wide festive wreaths. Santa’s Christmas Grotto, complete with elves, a

Santa will be available for photos in the grotto from 11.30am-3.30pm from Wednesday-Saturday 9-12 December and 16-19 December. Acting Group manager Community Services Mark Preston-Thomas said he was looking forward to seeing some festive sparkle in the streets. “It really feels like Christmas once the decorations start going up, and we hope they bring cheer to our community too.” Other Christmas activities are planned and are being collated and posted online on the Uniquely Nelson website. Hollywood filmmaker closes Nelson film festival Erin Bradnock Oren Peli made his name by creating one of the most successful horror films of all time – but now he is calling Nelson home. Oren propelled to global fame 11 years ago following the release of his first film ‘Paranormal Activity,’ but for two years he has been laying low in Nelson. A screening of the film and a Q&A with Oren closed Nelson’s Top of the South Film Festival at the Suter Cinema on Sunday. For Oren, it was the first time seeing his hit film on the big screen in over a decade. With a budget of US$15,000, the horror film grossed over US$200 million at the box office, making it one of the most profitable films of all time. But, despite the Hollywood successes, Oren says he’s grateful to have come to New Zealand when he did. “When we were looking to move, we Googled ‘sunniest city in New Zealand’ and Nelson came up,” he says. While Oren says he made some valuable friendships in Hollywood

Winners of the Top of the South Film Festival

Oren Peli became a global phenomenon after releasing his first film. Photo: Erin Bradnock. he admits he met far too many “slimy” people in his time there. He left filmmaking behind in 2015 once he started a family, and he and his partner agreed New Zealand was the place to relocate. Oren says it was the weather, size and safety that attracted him to Nelson. “When we first got here, we immediately fell in love. We thought ‘wow this is where we belong’.” For any budding filmmaker or film enthusiast, Oren’s story is nothing short of inspiring - making him the perfect person to close the Top of the South Film Festival.

Before Hollywood, Oren was a film enthusiast and computer programmer who was growing sick of his job when he came up with an idea for a film. Despite having no filmmaking experience, Oren dove into the deep end as a director, producer, writer and editor of Paranormal Activity, which he shot in his own home. His advice for anyone wanting to make a film is to “go for it” and says he’s seen a lot of filmmaking potential come out of the Nelson region already. “I’ve seen people here do a lot of cool work with very little resources and it’s very inspiring."

Swashbuckling Sinbad sequel to premiere Locally Owned and Operated

Kate Russell A family pantomime full of villains, slapstick comedy, music, terrible puns - and even a dancing camel - is coming to the Theatre Royal this week. Sinbad the Sailor (Retired) is the latest work from writer and director Alli Campbell, who was inspired by the thought - 'what happens to heroes when they retire?' Sinbad was a seafaring adventurer of renown in his youth and Alli picks up the hero's story long after he's tied up at the wharf. The Nelson Repertory Theatre show has been described as a “funny, energetic and heartwarming yarn” which begins with the retired hero sitting in his palace, nursing aching knees and a sore back. He believes his days of adventure are behind him. That is, until he gets a cry for help from an old friend, Betsy High Boots - the Pirate Queen. He is determined to put

Photo: Sam Collins Photography. his ailments and fears to one side and rise to the occasion - but not without the help of his allies and some encouragement from the audience. For Alli, who moved to New Zealand in 2009, the show is in part a nod to her Scottish roots.

“As long as I can remember, I have been going to a pantomime at Christmas,” she says. “It is a UK tradition and one I've always loved.” Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Nelson Repertory Theatre had to cancel two productions this year and are determined

that this time they can bring fun and laughter back to Nelson. Sinbad the Sailor (Retired) is on at the Theatre Royal from November 26 – 28. Tickets are available from www. eventfinda.co.nz or the theatre box office.

Opportunity to see motorhomes at beachside show It’s fantastic the Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show 2020 is going ahead this weekend in its usual beachside location by gorgeous Tahuna Beach. “Although we won’t have $300,000 dollar vehicles coming down from Auckland like we did last year, it will still be a great day out for motorhome enthusiasts,” says organiser Jan Heslop. Held annually at the region’s iconic Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, the event showcases New Zealand’s leading motorhome, campervan and caravan suppliers and designers, with new and used privately-owned motorhomes also available for sale and lease. “With so many Kiwis deciding to explore their own country, product has been in high demand, so some models are in short supply,” says Jan. “So, come along and see what’s available.” This year, the motorhome show

will be held on the last weekend of November. The event usually attracts around 2000 people from all over the South Island, with similar numbers expected this year. “We will be promoting safe practises as usual, asking people to register, scan QR codes, etc.”

Returning and new exhibitors Jan says the relaxed nature of the show and the overall success of the event has seen it grow exponentially. “It’s the partnership with Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park, working in with Nelson Rotary and Heslops, the superb location – it’s the whole package. We have a lot of exhibitors who are returning for the 2020 event and we welcome some new exhibitors too, including Diesel

nights for no extra cost.” There’s some wonderful prizes on offer this year including the Heslops Rotary Raffle Prizes for 2020. Ist prize is a 2/4/6 berth Maui Van 5-day hire, sponsored by the RV Super Centre. 2nd prize is a $1000 travel voucher sponsored by MTF Finance and 3rd prize is a $500 Gift Basket sponsored by Moutere Caravans.

Funds go to mental health for young mums Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park and Motel Operations Manager Peter Fraser and Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show organiser Jan Heslop. Tune NZ, Hybrid E-Bikes and Dump Mates.” “We would also like to thank RV Leisure Centre and Deluxe Group who have supported us every year for the last 10 years. We are also grateful to our sponsors – RV Super Centre, Heslops, MTF Finance, Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, Magic 99.2 FM, Burnsco, Maui NZ, Moutere Caravans and Rotary Club of NZ.” Jan says they are especially

grateful to Peter Fraser and his team at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park. “They always look after us. We get the opportunity to stay there for three nights and exhibitors can stay overnight for three

“All proceeds from this year’s show is going to mental health for young mothers with babies,” says Jan, who has been organising the event for the past 8 years and is still very passionate about it. Behind the scenes, Jan’s Rotary team of Barry and Hec, amongst others, have been busy doing a lot of the correspondence and invoicing for the exhibitors.

Pabitra Poudel with the amount of food an average New Zealand household wastes in a week. Photo: Kate Russell.

Fighting food waste Kate Russell

The Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show taking place at the Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park is great for people who are considering buying a motorhome or caravan or upgrading their existing one.

Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Pabitra Poudel is learning how her family can reduce their food waste. “I want to make sure we’re not throwing food away,” says the mum of two. Pabitra attended the 'Avoiding Food Trash and Saving You Cash' workshop at the Victory Community Centre on Friday. Hosted by Nelson City Council and led by Gileen Caughey from FoodSense, locals learned how to make the most of their food. Pabitra says leftover rice and vegetables are the main culprits in her house and the workshop gave her some good ideas to try - such as cooking less food to avoid leftovers. She says, in the past her family would rarely eat leftovers from the night before. “We never did it. Nowadays, we have to eat it.”

“I’ve been learning a bit more about posting stuff on Facebook and things like that too,” says Hec. “I’ve been involved in Rotary for 40 years and one of the things I’ve learned is that you get nothing out of something if you don’t put the time in. Jan said they needed someone to take on the role, so I said ‘yes.’”

Come down this weekend If you are looking at buying or selling a motorhome, campervan or caravan, want to improve your current motorhome or just want to see what life could be like if you owned a motorhome, then head down to the Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show which takes place on Saturday, November 28th and Sunday, November 29th, 2020 from 10am to 4pm at the Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park, at 70 Beach Road, Nelson. Public Gate Entry: $8.00 per person, under 15 free. Parking: entry is off Parker’s Road and at Tahuna Beach Holiday Park.

She also wants to learn how to recycle her food scraps. “We don’t use the scraps - we need to recycle them and learn an easy way to do it at home.” Gileen says the foods most often found in our trash cans include bread, fruit, leftovers, potatoes, poultry, rice, lettuce, and beef. On average, New Zealand households waste 3.15kg of food a week and cumulatively $1.17 billion worth of food each year. Gileens’s top tips are to use up what you already have, make a meal plan each week, shop with a list, store fruit and vegetables correctly and eat leftovers. Karen Lee, environmental programmes advisor at council, says Nelsonians are pretty good at not wasting food, but there is always room for improvement. “There is lots of really good information out there about how to avoid food waste and it’s all about sharing those ideas with each other.”

Mako fends off BOP to reach final Jonty Dine and Peter Jones The Tasman Mako are into the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership final for a second year running. Tasman will have the chance to defend its title and go back-to-back next Saturday when they take on Auckland at Eden Park. The Mako booked its berth in the big dance this weekend after a hard-fought 19-10 win over Bay of Plenty in Nelson on Saturday evening. Mitch Hunt put first points on the board after just three minutes with a relatively easy shot at goal. Tasman were guilty of forcing the issue with unnecessary offloads early on but reverted to its bread and butter in the 20th minute as Quinten MacDonald scored the game’s opener through an expertly executed rolling maul. A second soon followed as the powerful Leicester Fainga’anuku was rewarded for his numerous tackle busts in the opening exchanges with a try in the left corner. A controversial penalty put the Steamers hot on attack and eventually saw Tasman's Sione Havili sent to the bin for a professional foul. BOP took immediate advantage of the

Photo: Gavin Hadfield/Shuttersport. extra man, Joe Webber weaving his way through the Mako line to get his side in the game. The try ensured the Steamers would trail by just six at the break. The visitors introduced plenty of power from the pine in the form of All Black Sevens star Regan Ware and former All Blacks halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi. Otere Black edged his team three points closer with his first penalty but Hunt responded with his own long-range effort to make it 16-10 with twenty to play.

Tasman also injected fresh legs from the bench to try close out the result, but BOP began to build momentum. Another crucial play by Fainga’anuku sent Tasman into Bop territory where Hunt would nailed his third penalty to stretch the lead to nine as the clock ticked under seven. Bay of Plenty fought right until the final whistle but came up just short against the 2019 champions. After Auckland defeated Waikato earlier in the day, Tasman will now head north in a bid to win consecutive premiership

titles. Mako co-head coach Andrew Goodman was thrilled to make another final, and a chance to go back-to-back in the premiership. “There were some good passages there, Bay of Plenty have finished all their recent games very strongly so, in the second half particularly, we used our contestable kicking game to a real advantage. Goodman was also happy with his side’s ability to adhere to the game plan but suggested their general discipline would have to improve for the final. Captain David Havili said that although the Mako had lost plenty of seasoned campaigners from last year’s squad, there was still lots of experience in the squad. “The group that we have now is exceptional in the way that we use them, and we are super excited for next weekend. It’s pretty special to make the final, especially coming from this area, I’m really stoked to be able to get another opportunity, again.” 03 546 4455 The premiership final 41 Washbourn Drive, kicks off on Eden Park Richmond at 7.05pm.

The Black Ferns survived a significant scare as the world champions played its first-ever match in Nelson on Saturday. New Zealand was made to work during every minute of its fierce encounter with the Barbarians, eventually prevailing 19-17. The Barbarians managed to outscore the heavily-favoured Ferns 3-0 in the second half and almost stole it at the death. The Black Ferns fed a scrum with time up on the clock, but the Barbarians pulled off a stunning tight head to give them a shot at a thrilling upset. Earlier in the week, the team was welcomed onto the Whakatu Marae, held an open training session at Nayland College and cooked up a sausage sizzle at the top of Trafalgar St. Tasman Rugby CEO Tony Lewis says he hopes to host an annual Black Ferns test in Nelson. Lobsters didn’t get the memo The literature says that squat lobster form pelagic shoals of juveniles for some weeks and settle on the bottom as they mature. Quite obviously, this year’s class didn’t get the memo, large schools of them have been around for months. They have grown a lot bigger and many of them are even carrying eggs now. Thousands of birds are bobbing around between the 20 and 40m mark, most of them too lazy to fly because they are so full already. The fish aren’t any different, every single fish you catch is filled to the brim with the red A typical catch for this time of critters. Griffins claim Chapple Cup Jonty Dine

The coveted Chapple Cup will hold pride of place in the Nelson Griffins’ trophy cabinet for the first time since 1999. The annual tournament pits the Stags associations against each other in a 50-over format for central cricket supremacy. Nelson saw off Taranaki, Manawatū, Marlborough, Horowhenua-Kāpiti, Hawke's Bay, Whanganui and Wairarapa to win its first title in 21 years. The Griffins met 2019 champions Hawke's Bay in the final at Donnelly Park in Levin. Batting first, the Griffins scored 205 in 38 overs, Josh Clarkson top scoring with 74 off 60. With the likes of Greg Hay and Harsh Visavadiya in its batting ranks, the total appeared subpar for the Griffins. Things were looking comfortable for the defending champions at 141-2 before a significant collapse saw the Bay lose eight wickets for just 33 runs. Hawke’s Bay would slump to 174 all out to hand Nelson the historic victory. Felix Murray claimed three scalps with skipper Ollie JonesAllen chipping in with 2/32. Meanwhile, the first round of The Car Company 50 over Premier Grade competition was held on Saturday with

At the Botanics, Athletic College Old Boys dismissed Wanderers in the 49th over for just 109, Logan Ogilvie and Hayden Ingham top scoring with 17 and 15 respectively. Jake Milton claimed 3/16, and in reply ACOB needed just 22 overs to reach the total four wickets down, Greg Chitty making 36 and Shane White 34. Elsewhere, Wakatu managed just 134/10 off 40.5 overs as Will Bexley took 3/35 ably assisted by Dmitri van de Colk with 2/11. However, Nelson College could only muster 91 off 40 overs in response, Matthew O`Sullivan taking the stunning figures of 4/6 while Ryan Hooper picked

up 4/27 in the 43 run win. In the round's final fixture, Stoke Nayland were bowled out for145 off 40.3 overs, Dylan Eginton falling one short of a half century while Amit Dhiman acted as chief destroyer with 5/20, Waimea Toi Toi were woeful in reply though, dismissed for 60 off 31 overs, Jared Silvester claiming a five-wicket haul as his side won by 85 runs. Also last week, the Central Stags took on the Northern Knights in a four-day Plunket Shield game at Saxton Oval. A number of Black Caps were on show including Ross Taylor, Tim Southee and Ish Sodhi. Set 300 on the final day to win, the Stags came up 40 runs shy of victory.

Exciting first night at sea swims Peter Gibbs Nelson swimmer Oxford Bayley celebrated his 17th birthday in style, winning the opening race of the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series on Thursday. Richmond’s Abbey Smale showed she’s in the mood to reclaim her national ocean swim title as she dominated the women’s field. Despite the grey skies and chilly breeze, 145 swimmers lined up at the Nelson Yacht Club, 119 choosing the 750 swim and 26 the shorter option of about 350m. Ages ranged from 10-year-old Nia Linyard to 79-year-old Derek Eaton. The region has a core of some of the top distance swimmers in the country and it was no surprise that Alec Swan and Nic Hall were among the leaders as they set out on a triangular harbour course. National triathlon champion Hayden Squance was there too, as well as age group performers Terry Bone and Ben Marshall.

At the final mark, Oxford and Hayden were close together, but it was the younger swimmer who turned on the speed, winning by three seconds, with Alec a further ten seconds back in third. Abbey was next to finish, ahead of Nic, Terry, Ben, then Joe Thornton, and Matt Hansen, with 57-year-old Hamish Neill rounding out the top ten. Another 57-year-old, Christina Harris, was the second woman home, finishing in 14th overall, ahead of Ben Van Dyke, celebrating his elevation to septuagenarian status, and the third woman, 13-year-old Caitlin Eden. Brooke Swan continued on from last season, winning the short race by nearly a minute from Emily Chadderton, who finished in a tight bunch just ahead of Lilly Claridge and Noah Brehaut. Swimming continues at the Nelson Yacht Club throughout the summer. Details and full results at nelsonseaswims.co.nz.

With his father having grown up in Russia, ice hockey is in Max Plotnitski’s blood. However, due to Nelson’s climate, Max has had to hone his skills at the roller rink to chase his NHL dream. “There’s no ice here or I’d be playing ice hockey,” he says. Max had just turned five when his father first had him in skates. He almost immediately ended up on his bum. “I remember my first time, I fell over straight away. I didn’t like it and wanted to stop.” About a year later, Max was playing his first season for the

Nelson Whalers. “We just had a bunch of kids who couldn’t skate properly, we lost all of our games. I thought I wasn’t going to improve.” Despite the inauspicious start to his career, Max persisted and is now one of the most promising young players in the region. “I just kept practicing and started watching NHL, which helped me learn.” Max follows the Washington Capitals and his idol, Moscowborn Alexander Ovechkin. “My dad calls me ‘Ove’ because he’s my favourite player.” He also began playing with the seniors to further sharpen his skills.

The dedication paid dividends as his side began to turnaround its losing record with Max at the forefront of the resurgence. Spending hours shooting at a target in his garage, Max says his stick-handling skills have become his strength on the rink and he has now surpassed his father’s ability at the same age. “He says he wasn’t as good as I am now.” The ten-year-old Nayland Primary student also plays rugby and basketball, but his focus remains on inline. Max is set to trial for the New Zealand U-12s in 2021. “That is my goal now, I just want to make that team.”
