‘Protect us’ say Monaco residents New sea-level rise forecasts prompts concern from residents Erin Bradnock Some Monaco residents are ‘frustrated’ at the Nelson City Council and believe their
community has been ignored following the flooding and sea-level rise projections released last week. The council launched their virtual coastal inundation map last week,
demonstrating the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels through Nelson. Monaco, a thin peninsular jutting out from Nayland, is predicted as one of the
first areas to be vastly impacted by sea-level rise as early as 2060. Rosie Muster has been a Monaco resident for 32 years and says she feels “frustrated” at the lack of
communication and protection for their community following the impacts of cyclones in 2018.

‘Take diabetes seriously or end up like me’ Jonty Dine As a young man, Shane Torrance believed he was bulletproof. Shane played sport, had a physicallyintensive job, would eat and drink as he pleased and gave little regard for his health. So when, at 20-years-old, he was found to have type one diabetes, Shane more or less disregarded the diagnosis. “I was straight onto insulin four times a day and being told ‘you can’t eat this, you can’t do that,’ but I was doing it anyway. My control was pretty poor, I didn’t look after myself.” Shane’s lifestyle would eventually catch up with him.
