Nowhere to go for Christmas Kate Russell
All Trisha Purves wants for Christmas is a stable home for herself and her granddaughters. She has shifted between seven
motels in the last ten months, ever since they came into her care at the beginning of the year. “We’ve been in motels, motels, motels. We can’t even put a Christmas tree up, it’s pretty
depressing. It’s not going to feel like Christmas this year.” Her granddaughters, aged nine and eight, were originally placed in Oranga Tamariki care, and Trisha stepped in to take
care of them. “It was really sudden. At the time I was renting a room, I didn’t have a house, so they put us in a motel.” And they have stayed in motels
ever since, while Trisha actively applies for rentals and waits on the Housing NZ list. “I’ve been working with a

Santa Parade comes to town
This year's Santa Parade saw one of the largest turn outs in years with a crowd of more than 10,000 people lining Trafalgar St. Nelsonians were treated with a parade of up to 54 floats featuring emergency services, community groups, clowns, dancers, live music, mermaids and Santa himself. This year Nelson City Council relinquished organising duties to private organisers and The Hits Nelson 89.6 with great success. Organiser Hayden Rose says for him it was a fantastic afternoon that all ran smoothly. "We are very much looking forward to 2021, with a bigger, noisier and more colourful parade.” Photographer Erin Bradnock was there to capture the action.

But with the summer holidays approaching, availability is drying up. “We’ve got to be out of our current motel on December 18, because it is booked out.” She’s still not sure where they’ll go. “I’ve rung around, they’re just all booked up. They say, ‘why nana, why do we have to go again?’ They don’t know what’s happening from day to day.” Trisha says her budget for a rental is $450 a week, and ideally, she wants the girls to stay at their school in Richmond as it is “the only stable situation they have”. “They’ve both been there since they started school. I don’t want to move them out of the only place that’s good for them.” Trisha is hoping that her Christmas wish will be answered. “This is something that I didn’t expect to happen. We’ve been through the wringer, it’s exhausting. I just want a stable home for these kids. “I’ve just got to keep trying and hope that someone will give us a break.”

Former Giant laments stolen memorabilia Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Ali Granger is a sentimental sportsman. The former Nelson Giant saved his sneakers from every season with the side, some covered in signatures and special messages from teammates. So, he was understandably devastated to discover on Friday morning that thieves had broken into his business and stolen all his basketball memorabilia. Ali has lost almost 70 pairs of his beloved Nike shoes, his cap collection, tools, and other Giants gear in the burglary at Van and a Man on Parkers Rd. A colleague called Ali at 6.20am to report the incident. "I thought ‘surely not?’ Then I came in and everything that really means something to me was gone." Ali says the reality of the theft has yet to completely sink in. "I just feel so down, almost emotionless." The thieves were prepared and wore gloves, meaning police were unable to take fingerprints at the scene. Ali must now spend his own money to replace the tools that

He says the loss of his sneakers particularly hurts. "You can't replace that stuff, personal things I had signed and there are quotes and things written on those shoes which no one else would understand." He says many of the sneakers from his five years with the
Giants hold value only to him. "They’re wrecked from a whole basketball season and have all sorts of random crap written on them, but it is meaningful to me. I was looking forward to looking back at them in 20-30 years." Ali and his partner are offering a $2000 reward for any information leading to the recovery of the stolen gear. If you have any information please contact 0223757795.

Project to dispel myths about Islam Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Mutenser Qamar knows firsthand the abuse Muslims still have to deal with in society. Earlier this year, Mutenser was sitting at a Nelson coffee shop during his “I’m Muslim ask me anything” campaign when a passerby went on a Islamophobic rant. “F*** Islam, go back to your country,” the man shouted. Mutenser remained calm and offered to have a coffee with the abuser. The person refused, however, and continue spewing vitriol. Though the ugly incident highlights the need for these campaigns, Mutenser was heartened when a group of Nelson schoolgirls created a barricade between himself and the man. “As soon as he left, they turned around and said ‘we are really sorry’. That was such a heartwarming moment and shows the majority of New Zealanders hold those moral values, but the fact such thoughts are out there shows
Mutenser Qamar and Shafiq Ur Rehman with the Te Reo Māori translation of the Qur'an. Photo: Jonty Dine. there is misunderstanding,” says Mutenser. A 2017 University of Otago study found that the more avid a news reader someone is, the more likely they are to hold antiMuslim sentiments. In a bid to break down these barriers, Mutenser has been travelling the country with fellow Muslims inviting the public to ask them about anything Islam.

He says, for many people the only exposure they get to Islam is what they read in the media, which is often very negative “You hear about things that are happening in the Middle East or groups like Isis, the Taliban, and Al Qaeda and, because of that, whether consciously or subconsciously, people begin to develop a negative perception of Islam.”
Mutenser says with the Muslim population in New Zealand being so small, many people have never even met a Muslim before. “We just want to give that opportunity for people to ask any questions they may have.” Mutenser and his fellow Muslims were asked an array of questions by the Nelson public, from women’s rights to links with terrorism. “It’s all about helping to remove those misunderstandings.” As well as the informal conversations, an exhibition was also held at the Greenmeadows Centre on Saturday. Among the displays was a complete Te Reo Māori translation of the Islamic holy book, the Qur'an, with almost 50 locals coming through the exhibition. “We have had a very good response, some came with reservations, but it’s been very positive. “Understanding is essential to being a more united and peaceful society.” To find out more about the campaign go to www. trueislam.nz/

Riverside pool to close Staff Reporter
Nelson’s Riverside Pool will be closed for over a month as a new heating system is installed. Nelson City Council says the pool will be closed from 28 December 2020 until February 2021 so the current heater can be replaced. The work has been timed to ensure an alternative is available with Nayland Pool being open over the summer months. Community and recreation committee chair Tim Skinner says, on top of energy efficiency and reliability, another bonus is that the effect of breakdowns on the pool’s operations will be minimised. “The new heating system will mean pool users will enjoy a more reliable heating system with reduced energy costs. It’s a great upgrade for this important city centre facility.” The Riverside Pool fitness centre and changing areas will still be open over this time, and members can use Nayland Pool for no extra cost. Hire groups have been contacted regarding their bookings with the option of moving to Nayland Pool where possible. For enquires regarding the works please contact customer service at Nelson City Council. If you have any enquires regarding use of the pools, memberships or swimming lessons please call Riverside Pool on 03 546 3221 or email NelsonAquatics@ clmnz.co.nz.

Demystifying the hospital experience Locally Owned and Operated

Visits to the paediatric room at Nelson Hospital’s emergency department (ED) can be scary for children, but new artwork panels created by Victory Primary School students is hoping to fix that. The panels were installed last week, and some the students were given the chance to visit ED to check them out and try out some of the hospital equipment. “Some children come into the hospital and they’re terrified especially some of the immigrant children,” says registered nurse Anne Geange, who coordinated the project. “To go to a hospital is scary and anyone in a uniform is quite threatening.” She says the art panels, which depict the Victory community gardens and the Matariki lantern parade on the Railway Reserve, act as a welcome distraction. “The distraction is the best thing, especially if they are in

If you can take their mind off it, it’s a huge help. It’s artwork for kids, by kids. “It’s also very stressful for parents, so it also helps them to feel more comfortable.” The MDF panels were donated by Mitre 10 Mega Nelson while Resene donated all the paint. The students also got to try out
oxygen tubing and masks, a ventolin spacer and get dressings on Monday when they visited to “normalise” the experience. Anne says some of the kids had visited the hospital before, but for a few it was a new experience. “We’re trying to show them that we’re not this scary place where scary things are done to you.”
More than 20 families and locals joined in for some summer fun at Tāhunanui Beach on Sunday as part of a free sand sculpture competition and BBQ. The community event was hosted by Neighbourhood Support Nelson Tasman, Multicultural Nelson Tasman and Tāhunanui Community Hub. Aniquah Stevenson from Neighbourhood Support Nelson Tasman says the sand sculpture event was to create a fun, low environmental impact event with a focus on young people and families.
“It’s been a wonderful turnout and atmosphere with lots of shared kai and lots of beautiful sculptures left in the sand,” says Aniquah. Aniquah and Nelson City Councilor Rohan-O'Neill Stevens had a tough job ahead of them with 20 entries to consider. “It was an absolute treat to judge, with so many fantastic creations and a lovely community spirit,” says Rohan. Some of the impressive sculptures included a giant octopus, a millennium falcon, a gingerbread man and a living room set up from the “couch potatoes”.

Lifetime honour for Nelson disability advocate Charles Anderson Rodney Haines is used to breaking down barriers. Born without arms in 1942 in Nelson, the doctors who attended Rod's birth advised his mother to choose between euthanasia or placing him in an institution. Rod's mother refused both options and instead opted to take her baby boy home. He was recently inducted into the Attitude Awards Hall of Fame at a black-tie gala ceremony in Auckland. It was recognition of an incredible career devoted to the rights of Kiwis with disabilities. “Just because I have no arms, it doesn’t mean I’m not as capable or as able as the next person. I may look different on the outside, but I’m just the same as everyone else on the inside.” Rod has had a lifetime of overcoming tough odds. He went on to study law in Christchurch in the early 1960s, became a well-respected lawyer, including a brief stint as a judge, and eventually took over as manager of Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital in Nelson. During his speech on the awards night, Rod spoke of his journey of self-acceptance. “I was 30 before I was really comfortable with myself and with the philosophy that I was just as entitled to ‘be’, as much as the next person.”
Rodney Haines celebrates being induced to the Attitude Awards Hall of Fame with his wife Leonie. Photos: Supplied. The Attitude Awards are a nationally televised event celebrating the achievements of New Zealanders living with disabilities. Rod was joined at the ceremony in Auckland's Cordis Hotel by his wife Leonie, their sons Steve and Sam, daughter-in-law Berny and niece Anne. Rod is also one of the stars of ‘No Distinguishing Features’ - a documentary on the lives of six Australasians with disabilities that has just launched for streaming in New Zealand via Vimeo On Demand. Rod has also published an autobiography on his incredible life, Armless Not Brainless, which can be purchased as online as an e-book at or as a hard copy by emailing randlhaines@gmail.com

Former teacher enlists pupil to help with children’s book
Charles Anderson

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
When former Nayland College teacher Geoff Gudsell needed to find an illustrator for his children’s book he looked no further than his former pupil. Ned Barraud was in Geoff ’s social studies class some 30 years ago and has since gone on to become a successful author and illustrator. “I had been playing around and sending rhymes to my grandkids, so I sat down and wrote some down.” Then he sent them to Ned to illustrate. The subject matter was inspired by Geoff ’s grandchild Theo who had been sending him updates of his Lego dinosaur projects. The results are Old T-Rex and Big Woolly Mammoth – which tell the tales of two of prehistory’s most curious beasts. “The rhyming stories in the two books are both quirky as well as factual,” Geoff says. “I decided not to dumb-down the stories for the fouryear-olds who have the stories read to them, as he believes that even at that age they are capable of coping with terms such as the Pleistocene
Geoff Gudsell with the copies of his children’s books he has recently completed. Photo: Charles Anderson. and Cretaceous.” The biggest supporters are his grandkids, who also make an appearance in the book, alongside the prehistoric creatures. “The resutls of Ned’s artistic ability speak for themselves as you see the characters and personalities of these famous creatures develop throughout each book.” The Nelson Weekly is giving away a copy each of Old T-Rex and Big Woolly Mammoth. Email editorial@ nelsonweekly.co.nz with why you would like a copy to enter the draw. The books can also be found in Paper Plus, Page and Blackmore and Volume.

Rhona reaches academic Everest Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Rhona Aran understands better than most that education is a human right. Her father grew up in deeply impoverished rural Nepal. The youngest of eight children, he would have to walk up steep hills for up to two hours just to get to class. At six-years-old, he had to drop out of school to help the family.
Her father’s upbringing instilled Rhona’s appreciation for education, a privilege she did not take for granted as she was recently named dux of Nelson College for Girls. “Seeing how proud my dad was because he didn’t really get to go to school was amazing,” she says. Rhona has returned to her father’s homeland every year since she was six, where her family runs an education charity. She spends weeks at a time living in the country, getting to know
the culture and the locals. “It makes me appreciate the differences in education between here and there.” Rhona hopes to one day work in a third world nation, improving the lives and knowledge of women. Her passion for social science is evident in her grades. Studying English, Art History, Classics, History, Geography and French, Rhona achieved excellences across the board in her internal exams. “I worked harder this year, but
"Seeing how proud my dad was because he didn’t really get to go to school was amazing." the main difference has been I have been so interested in all my subjects.” Rhona also made her mark outside of the classroom, as
she was heavily involved in volunteering for the school’s enviro group and for Amnesty International. She also enjoyed a two-month exchange in Switzerland which she ranks among her schooling highlights. Rhona will attend Otago University in 2021 to study a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in history and global studies. “Do what you are interested in and you will always work hard and be rewarded,” she says.

Lee-ann lauded for youth work Locally Owned and Operated
Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
From a youth worker to an adolescent nurse specialist to educator, Lee-ann O’Brien has been helping young people since she was one herself. Lee-ann is the manager and cofounder of Whanake Youth, a hub for local young people to escape the stresses in their lives. “It is a place for young people to be the best versions of themselves they can possibly be.” Lee-ann opened the youth service in 2015 after seeing a gap in what was needed for young people in our community. Whether it’s food, clothing, emotional or physical health problems, Whanake Youth caters to every need.
“We want to walk alongside young people whatever that journey looks like.” Lee-ann’s unwavering commitment to local youth has seen her nominated for a Kiwibank Local Hero Award. Lee-ann says a number of the children in Whanake’s care have difficult home lives. “We look to take people out of home environments which are a bit tricky and give them a space that is just for them. It is not just about life skills development but teaching them to be young people again.” New friends, improved selfconfidence and its famous cheese toasties have made Whanake Youth a popular hangout spot for young people in Nelson. “I think it is important for the wellbeing of people.”

Stock runs dry amid Christmas rush: Why not just support our amazing food products, activities and services that come from Nelson? Craft beer, the Cable Bay Adventure Park, manicures, mountain bike shuttle passes, Anatoki Salmon vouchers or huge buckets of peanut butter. Celebrate our amazing region. Julian Trigg
At the markets you can get your items immediately and put the money straight into the creator’s pocket. Everyone wins. Jodie Lee
How silly to worry about such materialist nonsense when our children are hungry and homeless and the rest of the world are still dying. Sarah Hall
If it reduces the level of Christmas consumerism then I don't see that as a bad thing, to be honest. Dennis Goodman I love the decorations in the city. Many of us are so incredibly lucky to even see Christmas. For me, spending it with those I was separated from, is all I want for Christmas. Sharon Patterson And people wonder why I start my Christmas shopping in July. Mandi Halliday A first world problem indeed. Renee Lang The number of customers that abuse us daily is shocking, they seem to think that it’s our fault we don’t have what their children want for Christmas and think the company isn’t trying its hardest to fill the shelves. We don’t have control over the Coronavirus set back and stock problems, but we are sure trying our hardest to please everybody. People need to remember to be kind to retail workers and have a little heart for how hard we are working for everybody this Christmas. Tori Hodgkinson Young mums turn lives around: It is hard work being a young parent and studying, these young women are true high achievers. Gai Thomas It is very, very hard juggling children and just their lives - and then to put in you studying is even harder. What it means is no housework or any spare time for you. It is for a short time (a few years) and not easy. Good on you, keep strong. Megan Inwood
No matter how old you are or how many children you have, you can still study and achieve so many wonderful things. I'm 30 with five children and just completed study and career preparation at NMIT. Honestly, ladies well done. Congratulations and I wish you all the very best for your futures. Jannelle Blair Patterson When I did my bachelor of midwifery, there were quite a few young women studying with me who had their babies at 16 or 17. Then at around 23 they went to university. Don't ever let anyone say a baby messes up your life. A baby just changes it. Go and be whatever you want. The world is your oyster. Leah Tibbotts Well done girls! Very well deserved to all of you lovely young ladies. This makes me so happy to read. Great job to the whole teaching and manage-
ment team also. Karyn Brain
Mother’s plea to ease daughter’s pain: Heart-breaking reading this story and that it boils down to money - why can’t her family help her quality of life? This family should be allowed to make the CBD oil themselves. I hear it’s a simple recipe. But of course, big companies can make it legally, and doctors can prescribe for up to $1000 a bottle - yet if a family like this made it, they would probably face prosecution. How is this fair? I know several elderly people on CBD oil who are now sleeping eight hours straight. It helps with arthritis, anxiety, and inflammation. Top Nelson specialists are putting patients on CBD oil, but people can’t afford this natural medicine that seems to have no side effects. Michelle Ashby
Nelson Matters Labour is making Nelson’s housing affordability problem worse with its “Funding for Lending Scheme”. It is also very unfair on our Nelson Building Society (NBS). This scheme involves giving $28 billion of printed money to the banks at an interest rate of just 0.25%. There is no requirement for it to be used for struggling businesses or job retention. The bulk is going into housing with $400 million expected to flow into Nelson
and Tasman. It is not targeted at first home buyers or new house construction and is just throwing petrol on the fire of rampant house prices. These have soared 20% in the last year in Nelson and Tasman, the fastest increase ever. The median price is up $100,000 since last year to $670,000 in Nelson and $774,000 in Tasman. Median house prices nationally went up $24,000 in a single month in November. It is crazy that people are making more
money from their houses than from working. These massive house price rises are also driving up rents. Nelson rents have gone up $70 per week under Labour as compared to the preceding three years of $20 per week between 2014 and 2017 under National. Waiting lists for state houses have trebled since 2017. Nelson is seeing more homeless, more low income families struggling to pay rent and more Nelsonians locked out of ever owning their own home.
The cheap billions the Government is giving out is only going to the banks and not to other home lenders like our NBS which has to get its funds from retail deposits. Labour is enabling the Aussie banks like ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac to underarm bowl against NBS in the home mortgage market. Nelson should be very proud of NBS as NZ’s largest non-bank lender. It has a billion in loans and provides thousands of local families with home mortgages
while generously supporting many Nelson causes like our Hospice and the champion Mako rugby team. Labour should not be screwing the scrum by advantaging the big Aussie banks against our NBS. This scheme shows how Labour does not understand finance. The cheap cash is just driving house prices higher and undermining our Nelson Building Society. Advert.

There are many benefits to getting a Bachelor’s degree at NMIT, such as smaller class sizes, attentive tutors, hands-on learning, industry experience, and flexible part-time and online study options. Not to mention the state-of-the-art facilities, including the purpose-built Creative Industries building, the exercise science and physiology lab, and an onsite vineyard and winery. You don’t have to leave the region, get an expensive flat in a big city, and attend university to have a life-changing study experience. Instead, you can “study local” at NMIT.
Find a list of our events at nmit.ac.nz/events or follow us at facebook.com/NMITNZ
NMIT currently offers 10 Bachelorlevel programmes in a range of study areas, including Commerce, Arts and Media, Information Technology, Nursing, Viticulture and Winemaking, Aquaculture and Marine Conservation and more. Our unique blended model of classroom learning and industry experience prepares our graduates to be work- and world-ready.
Bachelor of Arts and Media student Georgia Elliston says she was attracted to NMIT by the smaller class sizes and the prospect of more one-on-one support and feedback from tutors.
Bachelor of IT student Corrina Busby had the opportunity to do work experience at a local software company while studying, which has led to her being offered an internship when she graduates.
Choosing to study local could be the best decision you make for your future and help you to launch into your career on the front foot.

She also wanted to study locally in Nelson. “Getting to have time with tutors and getting to know my classmates, it’s a really great vibe. The tutors are almost like mentors, based on the one-on-one time they dedicate,” she says.
“I feel like I know a lot more about working in industry just by having the opportunity to do the placement.”

Volunteers needed for Isel House
Grant applications extended for Heritage Month ideas
Lovers of history have an opportunity to help share a piece of it with the world as a volunteer at Isel House. Originally set on 1000 acres of land, the historic home was built by the Marsdens, one of Nelsons first families, who arrived in the area in the 1840s. Isel House has been restored by way of layers of history – from the ornate style of the Victorian era, to the modernist style of the 1950s. The upstairs rooms have been conserved and hold displays on the history of the house, the grounds, and the community of Stoke. This year there is another new display for children and families called 'The Tiny Room'. The house is open to the public every summer from October to April, and visitors are assisted by volunteers, who give information about the house and are responsible for opening and closing it. Sylvia Wesney is one such volunteer, and it was her love of Nelson’s heritage that drew her to it. “Isel House is so unique, with a rich history regarding
its construction, the farm, the park and stories of the families who lived at Isel from 1849. It is so rewarding to see the enjoyment visitors and locals get when they visit Isel, learn its history and enjoy the exhibitions, especially the two children's rooms. “As a volunteer it is a real pleasure to contribute to Nelson's heritage, ensuring Isel House remains open to the public.” Heritage and Collections Officer Māhina Marshall says Isel House in in need of more volunteers over the summer, and encourages anyone with a love of history and a few spare hours a week to get in touch. “Being a volunteer host at Isel House is a chance to give back to the community and keep Nelson heritage alive as well as meet people, learn about the history of Nelson and enjoy the satisfaction of keeping this grand old house open to the public.”
Photo: Isel House volunteers Myra Millward, left, and Sylvia Wesney. Shifts at the house are 2.5 hours long, and take place once in the morning and afternoon during the summer period. People are welcome to join with their friends or partners. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact mahina.marshall@ncc.govt.nz

Holiday Hours For Nelson City Council holiday hours go to
People with fresh ways to tell stories of Whakatū Nelson's unique people and places now have a little more time to get their grant applications in ahead of the 2021 Heritage Month event. There is a wealth of stories from our city’s history to explore, and Nelson City Council has been working with the eight iwi of Te Tau Ihu to encourage greater participation in our next festival. Events in previous years have included tours of Nelson’s heritage homes, classes for traditional crafts such as dowsing, and talks from the curator of the Nelson Provincial Museum. We’re keen to hear from creative individuals or organisations with ideas for sharing our histories and stories for inclusion in Heritage Month. Council has grants of up to $2000 to help bring those ideas to life and has now extended the deadline for applications out to the end of January 2021. The grants work in partnership with Council, and as such, applicants will also need to contribute time or money to the project. Events must have a focus on heritage through stories of people and place, and be open to the public. For more event criteria, or to apply for a grant visit:

Nelson’s oldest rugby cup housed at Civic House A piece of rugby history memorabilia has a temporary new home in Nelson. The Nelson Rugby Football Club's cup, which is the oldest competitive trophy in Nelson club rugby, is on display in the Council chamber at Civic House. New Zealand’s first rugby club lent the cup to Nelson City Council after their 150th anniversary celebration of New Zealand's first recorded rugby game was held earlier this year. Founded in 1868, the Nelson Rugby Football Club won the match in 1870 at the Botanical Reserve in Nelson, with a 2-0 win over Nelson College.

Standard and Poor’s report says they expect the next few years to see Council recording small after-capital-account deficits due to a rise in capital expenditure linked to an “uptick” in core infrastructure investment. However, they also say Nelson's debt burden should remain moderate compared with its peers. The report also notes pressure on Council revenues due to measures taken as a result of COVID-19, including the zero percent rates rise, which were partially offset by a staff pay-freeze and other savings. Despite this, the agency describes the increase to Council’s debt burden as
“modest”. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says long-term, careful financial management put Council in a strong position as revenues reduced during lockdown and helped to maintain the AA credit rating. “The debt we will have taken on in our response is relatively modest, thanks in part to the savings we found in the 2020/21 Annual Plan. Our fiscal processes are described by the agency as credible and well-established, and it’s that attention to detail, which has left us in a solid position financially.”
Sport Tasman payment agreement amended Nelson City Council has granted Sport Tasman a 90 per cent rent reduction for Sports House, putting right a past misunderstanding, by releasing the organisation from the remainder of an agreed payment schedule. The Community and Recreation Committee agreed, at its 10 December meeting, to cancel Sport Tasman’s future commercial lease obligations to payments for Sports House from 1 July next year. This means Sport Tasman would be released from paying the remaining balance of $166,000. The Committee also recommended Sport Tasman is charged a community rent rate of $5,600 per annum from 1 July 2021, noting that Council has given Sport Tasman rent relief through to 20 June, 2021. The recommendation will be confirmed at the next full Council meeting on 17 December. Community and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Tim Skinner said the decision was an opportunity to put the situation right. “Sport Tasman have unfairly borne the additional financial weight of this for the betterment of the community, and this change will now better assist them going forward.” The resolution was welcomed by Mayor Rachel Reese, who said the issue had been around for a long time.
“I’ve spent years trying to get to the bottom of this and I’m really delighted this is finally here. “I would like to thank the Sport Tasman team who have been trying really hard to work this situation out for a long time. I’m so pleased that we have finally been able to address this, and ease the financial burden on an important community organisation at this time.” In 2008, Sport Tasman requested the construction of Sports House while plans for Saxton Stadium were being finalised. At that time, Nelson City and Tasman District Councils both gave Sport Tasman grants to pay for the project, with Nelson also giving the organisation an additional $665,000 as a loan repayable over 20 years. However, the loan was documented as a lease, with Sport Tasman entering into a lease agreement, with the annual repayment received as rent. Council officers have since recognised the agreement was misunderstood in its expression, which meant when a change of management occurred, it was not clear the agreement was a loan.
Giants extension to funding agreement recommended to Council The Community and Recreation Committee of Nelson City Council has recommended that Council grants the Nelson Giants a reduction in the hireage fee for the Trafalgar Centre for 2020/21. Council provided a two-year discount in 2018, however the Giants were not able to fully make use of the Trafalgar Centre over the 2019/20 season because of COVID-19 restrictions, and therefore missed out on the benefits of the reduced fee for that year. The recommendation will result in the Giants paying $35,000 for hire and service charges of the Trafalgar Centre instead of a potential $61,000 cost. At the Community and Recreation Committee meeting
on 10 December, it was recommended that unbudgeted expenditure of $25,101 was used to cover the cost of the fee reduction for the Giants’ use of the Trafalgar Centre between April-July 2021. If the Giants require any further venue hire discounts after 2021, they will need to make a submission to the Annual Plan. A final decision on the recommendation will be made at the next full Council meeting on 17 December.

Comment from Kate Fulton Climate change and sea level rise are important to understand – take five minutes now to think about the future. It’s nearly Christmas, and 2020 has been a very challenging year. The impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on so many of us has been enormous. Yet our concerted effort, collective responsibility and care for others has allowed our lives to adapt to a new normal. We need to deliver the same effort, responsibility and care to climate change. As Chair of the Environment and Climate Committee, and as a scientist, I know understanding climate adaption and resiliency isn’t straight-forward. It’s important Nelson City Council communicates current climate science in a local context and meaningful timeframe. To keep you up to date with the current science we recently released sea-level rise maps. The Ministry for the Environment’s (MFE) guidelines were used to produce the maps based on emissions profiles and predicted global temperature increases over the next 180 years. The guidelines show us that a continuation of high global emissions and consequential temperature increases of 2.7- 4.9°C will result in 1m sea-level rise by 2100 and up to 2m into the middle of next century. However, how fast and by how much the sea will rise, will be influenced by local, national and global efforts to reduce and offset emissions. Therefore, MFE has provided sea-level rise profiles aligned with declining future emissions which meet the COP21 Paris Agreement global temperature warming targets. New Zealand also sits within the High Ambition Coalition committed to achieving below 1.5°C. If achieved, sea-level rise is predicted to be 0.4m – 0.5m by 2100. The potential benefits will protect 10 million people - including our Pacific Island neighbours. There’s a lot at stake here. There’s also a lot of opportunities - for countries, cities, industries and communities to make the emission reductions necessary to give future generations greater choice and stability. The decisions we make now can deliver the best outcomes for us all – people, planet and the place we live. We are yet to release a range of adaption
options. We recognise the approaches we take to plan fo the future may have implications in terms of Council and individual costs, insurance, accessibility, land values and our environment. Other communities around the country are having similar conversations. We want to shape a future based on the values of our community, including a love of our coastlines, rivers and waterways. We cherish living closely connected to water. We need to figure out how that relationship will be protected or changed based on science as it evolves. Since releasing the maps, some people have asked that we abandon parts of our city now. Others tell us we can ignore climate change. Neither outcome reflects our ability to plan for a resilient future in a measured and responsible way. We are committed to taking a long term, balanced view. We encourage feedback on how the things that matter to you may be affected. We expect different opinions, and we recognise everyone will have a unique perspective. It’s important to hear from a wide a range of people so we can get a true understanding from our community on how we should plan our response to sea-level rise. The maps and feedback form can be found at shape.nelson.govt.nz/coastal-hazards. Feedback closes on 18 December.

Swimming: Nelson swimmer Oxford Bayley almost upset the pre-race favourite while Abbey Smale of Richmond picked up from where she left off last summer in the first race of the national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series in Takapuna on Saturday. The series opened this year with a new race, the 3.8km
Swim the Shore race from Narrow Neck to Takapuna. From the start, a couple of lead groups of four or five emerged, with 53-year-old former Commonwealth Games swimmer Brent Foster in one and 17-year-olds Smale and Bayley in another. As they rounded the final buoy off Takapuna Beach, Foster had a slight lead over Bayley, going on to win by 20 seconds in 47min 34sec. Auckland swimmer Alex Dunkley took bronze a further 30 seconds back. Sticking with the leaders paid handsome dividends for Smale, as she continued her dominance of the series, finishing eighth overall in 49.28, three minutes ahead of Auckland swimmer Teresa Adam. It was a further 90 seconds back to Ella Crowe of Auckland, who took the women's bronze medal. Full results at oceanswim.co.nz
Nelson College stun Stoke/Nayland Jonty Dine Reporter

Nelson College pulled off a major upset in the Nelson 50over competition, knocking off frontrunners Stoke/Nayland by 14 runs at Lower Ngawhatu on Saturday. In a low scoring match, Nelson College's Dmitri van der Colk ripped through Stoke/ Nayland's line-up to claim 4/25 as last year's finalists were all out for just 86. Batting first, Nelson posted just 100 runs, Flynn Day managing the only substantial score with
39 as Ryan Edwards and Jared Silvester took three wickets apiece. Kaleb McKay set the tone in the second innings, dismissing Josh Smith with the third ball of the chase. The wickets, continued to fall as van der Colk took the final four wickets including that of All Black Mitch Drummond who top-scored with 18. The win was Nelson's first of the season with Stoke being handed its first loss after three rounds. Elsewhere, Waimea Toi Toi United picked up a comfortable seven-wicket home victory against Athletic College Old Boys.
Despite a half-century from Aravinda Panditaratne, the visitors could only manage 155 from 44 overs, Sam Baxendine and Jon Routhan each claiming three scalps. In Motueka, a blistering century from Brad Smith saw Wakatu climb to the top of the table with a big win over Wanderers. Smith struck 123 as Wakatu amassed 289/9 in its 50 overs, Dustin Emms- Healey scoring 65 and Angus Philpot finishing unbeaten on 31. Wanderers were be dismissed in the 40th over for just 107, handing Wakatu a hefty 175 run win.

Christine’s rapid rise to top boxer Locally Owned and Operated
Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
After a long hard day of painting houses, there is nothing Christine Gillespie enjoys more than going to the boxing gym and punching someone in the face. Just four years ago, Christine was 30kg heavier, eating poorly and not exercising. The 29-year-old confesses to becoming lazy after retiring from dancing and her lifestyle was catching up to her. It was then she decided to scratch an itch she has had since childhood and stepped inside the boxing gym. “Dad used to box so I grew up watching it all the time,” she says. “I always wanted to get in the ring, it just took a long time to get there.” Christine has since enjoyed a rapid rise in the ring and is now set to fight at the New Zealand Amateur National Championships in January. She will face strong competition from a pair of North Island

Christine has been putting in hours of grind in the gym in preparation for the bout, sparring with much larger men. “I’ve learnt to keep my hands up.” She also recently fought an exhibition bout at the South Island golden gloves in Richmond. After eight official fights she is sporting an impressive 6-2 record.
“The losses were big learning curves.” Should she be successful in January, Christine will be the first Nelson boxer to bring home a national title since Dawn Chalmers in 2011. “We are not going to participate, we are going to win,” coach Randall Dixon says. “I think she will give a few girls a fright.” Christine is setting her sights high, hoping to one day box with a silver fern on her chest. “I’d like to have a crack at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.”

Kirby loses speedcubing crown Jonty Dine Nelson’s Ben Kirby is proof that practice makes perfect. The 19-year-old two-time national speedcubing champion admits his talent is not a natural gift. When his mum first brought home a Rubik's Cube from a birthday party, Ben tried his hand at the iconic 3D puzzle. “I was terrible, I couldn’t even do a side.” However, Ben would persist, with his Broadgreen Intermediate teacher Jean Munro providing a source of inspiration.
“She could solve it in 50 seconds which was mind blowing, and she got me motivated to get to her speed. I was determined to beat it.” He perfected his craft though YouTube videos and soon surpassed his mentor’s speed before breaking the record for the fastest solve in the country, with a best of 6.35 seconds. “It’s about learning the algorithms and committing them to muscle memory, I was pretty fixed on getting faster then I realized there were competitions.” Ben is a twotime national

He put his title on the line at the Trafalgar Centre over the weekend as the National Speedcubing Championships came to Nelson for the first time. “It’s exciting to have it here, hopefully it will continue to grow in Nelson.” The former Nayland College student says it is an incredibly nerve-wracking sport. “It is aesthetically pleasing and relaxing for me, but in

I don’t know, I guess it was one of those days, the nerves got to me. Since the pressure is so high it screws with your mental clarity.” Ben’s title was claimed by Wellington’s Lucas O’Connell, who averaged 8.61 seconds, edging Ben’s 2019 average of 8.64 seconds. Despite the loss, Ben picked up an impressive consolation. “I did really well in other events, my best result was the 5x5 where

I set a new national record, six seconds faster that previous one.” This result also put Ben, at 23, in the world for the ‘5x5’, which is a bigger version of the traditional cube. “That made up for it.” Ben says consistency is key in speedcubing. “I did it a lot in high school, countless hours, I didn’t do it in class but sometimes at lunch.” Ben has since competed at the world championships in Australia. “There were more than 1000 competitors, it was cool to meet people you know about, it’s like going to the Olympics and meeting the greats.” His goal is to become the fastest cuber in the world. “You have to be consistently in the low six seconds to be up with top in the world, so I have about a second to shave off.”
