First Covid-19 vaccine arrives Kate Russell

It’s official - the Covid-19 vaccine has arrived in Nelson.

Frontline Port Nelson workers and their families were the first in the region to receive the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine on Monday, with just over 400 workers and the

1000 people they live with being offered it over the coming weeks.

“It’s just another jab, no big deal,” says Port Nelson worker Shaun Chase after receiving the vaccine.

Shaun says that he feels safter because of the vaccine but he was more interested in doing it for the safety of other people around him.

“We’re interacting with a lot of international ships that come in.”

The vaccines will be given out in batches of at least 50 per day.

With two doses required for all parties and three weeks required in between doses, the complete roll-out will take several weeks.

“This is the first phase of New Zealand’s largest-ever immunisation programme, and the much-anticipated next crucial phase in our fight against Covid-19.

“Our frontline port workers,

such as pilots and stevedores, can potentially come into direct contact with crew on international vessels. This makes them some of the most vulnerable members of our community in terms of their exposure to the virus.”

Hugh Morrison, Port Nelson’s chief executive, says he is pleased frontline border workers now have access to the vaccine after being tested either weekly or fortnightly for Covid-19.

The vaccine was approved by Medsafe in early February and has been transported in special containers to the South Island from the ultra-low temperature (ULT) storage facility in Auckland.

Nick says the next group of people to be offered the vaccine will be frontline healthcare and disability workers, plus those most at risk from Covid-19, such as older people or those with medical conditions that make them vulnerable if infected.

“We appreciate our community will want to know when they’ll be able to get their vaccine.

While we can’t confirm the exact timeframe, we have been assured that there will be enough vaccine for everyone in our region, so no one will miss out.”

Nick says if people have questions about the vaccine, it’s important they get the information they need to make an informed decision from reliable sources.

“I encourage people to talk to their GP, practice nurse, Māori healthcare provider or other healthcare professional.”

Chicken burger leaves raw taste Charles Anderson Editor

When Mary-Ellen Brown started tucking into a Burger King buttermilk chicken burger she was just looking for a decent meal. Instead, she got a raw deal.

Mary-Ellen was just finishing work when she thought she would purchase a 2-for-1 deal from Burger King Nelson, through the Burger King app.

She took a few bites.

“And something just didn’t feel right.”

So, to check she tried the other one and took two decent bites from it. When she looked at the burger, there was a nasty surprise.

“That was worse. It was totally raw.”

When she got home her husband said that she should force herself to be sick.

“I actually had to make myself vomit.”

She called the store and could not get through for some time.

Eventually a worker answered and apologised and offered her two free meals.

“I said ‘thanks but I’m not going to be going back to BK any time soon’. But really this is a health and safety issue. I thought maybe their fryer had been turned off or something. It shouldn’t have been allowed to happen.”

She worried that it might have happened to someone else.

“What if they were pregnant or if I had given it to my son, he wouldn’t have even known.”

Mary-Ellen ended up emailing photos of the burger to the company’s head office in Auckland. They sent back a generic letter saying they were “sorry the experience did not meet your expectations”. Enclosed was $20 worth of vouchers.

The training and quality assurance manager for the company emailed Mary-Ellen and said they would investigate what went wrong and let her know. But it was only when Mary-Ellen followed up that he emailed her the result. It turned out a timer on the fryer had been accidentally bumped. The manager said that they had now moved the timer to prevent that from happening again.

But Mary-Ellen says that’s not good enough.

“There needs to be some extra protocol in place to check the food. Even just checking the temperature for food before it goes out. It might take a bit longer but this is health and safety.”

Burger King's head of marketing Andrea Spearman says the "health and safety of our guests is of the highest importance to us" and began a full investigation to understand, and rectify, the root cause of the raw chicken.

"As a result of this finding we revised the set-up of cooking equipment across the entire network."

In 2018, the Nelson Weekly published an expose on the Burger King after customers and staff complained about its lax hygiene efforts.

Controversial planter boxes to be relocated Erin Bradnock

A picnic table and planter box that were placed on Kawai St as part of a $1 million project to make the road safer will be relocated after a resident canvassed his neighbours who thought they were an “accident waiting to happen”.

The on-road planter boxes and tables on Kawai St were part of a Nelson City Council 'Innovating Streets’ trial to make the area through Kawai South, Tipahi and Tukuka Streets more people friendly.

The $950,000 project, 90 per cent funded through Waka Kotahi NZ, includes a four-way give way intersection, speed humps and the controversial planter boxes and picnic table setups on the road.

Kawai St resident Laurie Christian says he was “disappointed” that the council hadn’t consulted with him before the table and planter boxes were set up outside his property. He describes the set up as an “accident waiting to happen”.

“I knew people weren’t happy after speaking to a few community members, so I wanted to find out who was in favour,” he says.

Out of the 92 residents who responded to the question regarding the planter boxes and tables, 78 disagreed with having them set up on the road.

Other results include 71 out of 98 residents disagreeing with the four-way stop sign intersection and 77 out of 90 disagreeing with the removal of street parking.

Having presented his findings to Nelson City Council on Thursday, councillor Mel Courtney announced the table and planter box outside Laurie's house will be relocated.

“Laurie’s work was fabulous and very helpful. This is a matter of trial and error and this is just phase one of the trial,” says Mel. While Laurie is pleased to hear the installations will be removed from outside his property, he still holds concerns for safety if they continue to be placed on roads.

“They’re still going to cause traffic to swerve onto the wrong side of the road. The planter

boxes coming out to the middle of the road is dangerous and there are no warning signs or arrows to warn drivers there is a change to the road” he says.

Mel could not confirm when the installations outside Laurie's house would be relocated but said the matter will be discussed at a public meeting that was set this week. The meeting will now be postponed due to recent changes in Covid-19 alert levels.

“We need this feedback. This is all new, it’s exciting and it’s another idea. We might not get it right the first time, maybe not the second but maybe on the third or fourth we’ll get it right,” says Mel.

Wild Tomato mag closes Staff Reporter Nelson-based lifestyle magazine WildTomato has ceased trading after 15 years.

The magazine, which covered Nelson and Marlborough, was owned by UK-based Jack Martin and closed its doors last Thursday. The magazine, which was launched in 2006 and bought by Jack two years later, had been on the market since the end of last year.

In a statement to readers and advertisers, CEO Lisa Friis wrote: “Sadly a range of factors, brought to a head by Covid-19, has led to the decision by our offshore owner to cease trading.

“None of this takes away from what WildTomato and the people behind it - staff, contributors, advertisers and readers - have been able to achieve. We were pioneers in the regional magazine space and published more than 170 editions which have been met with consistently wonderful feedback from our readers and advertisers.

What’s the problem with a pride crossing?

OPINION On Saturday afternoon I made the rare decision to pull down a post from our Facebook page.

We had published a story about Nelson City Council’s move to install a “pride crossing” across Trafalgar St. It would go across one of the existing courtesy crossings and feature the multi-coloured flag that reflects the diversity of the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender and queer community. It would cost between $5000 and $9000 that would come from Nelson Youth Council and council itself.

The councillor that championed it, Rohan O'Neill-Stevens, was quoted in the article as saying that the crossing represented “more than just paint on the ground”.

“It is a commitment to work with all of our marginalised communities to uplift them. I hope this can be a starting point for Nelson to be one of Aotearoa's most open and welcoming cities."

He said at the time that 99 per cent of public feedback had been positive.

Then we posted the story to Facebook. Almost 800 comments later, I made the call to pull it

There were complaints about council spending, there were complaints that the money would be better spent elsewhere – like fixing the housing crisis or the city’s pipes. People complained that it was too exclusive – that why should one group of people get their own crossing? One woman was even concerned that the colours would lure children onto the crossing.

Then there were offensive complaints which used vulgar and aggressive language that do not bear repeating here. They were an insight into some views that are unfortunately still held in

Nelson. Too many bordered into this territory. It made moderating the thread a relentless task.

However, many others voiced strong support for the crossing as a way to show Nelson as an inclusive, welcoming and vibrant community.

Often when faced with such polarising opinions like this I sometimes like to do a thought experiment – I ask ‘what is the best, or the worst that can happen from this?’.

In my view, the worst case is that up to $9000 will be used from funds that are generally to be used for projects devoted to youth issues, or community wellbeing.

In the worst case scenario this might mean that some other project or cause or issue would miss out on some money. But in the context of council’s budget, a solution could still likely be found. The council’s total operating expenditure for the 2020-2021 annual plan is $123 million. If the crossing came to $9000, this would represent just 0.007 per cent of that total budget and will not affect rates.

So the worst case is that .007 per cent of the council’s budget is spent on something that some people, who are ambivalent about its purpose, believe is superfluous.

It might mean another project could miss out. Maybe not.

So, what is the best thing that could happen?

Maybe it makes for a photogenic scene that helps promote the city.

Maybe it brightens up the CBD a bit. Or maybe it helps a kid who is dealing with how to come out to their parents feel a little less alone. Maybe it gives them the confidence to be who they are without fear that they might be attacked, ridiculed or threatened.

Maybe it challenges Nelsonians about their views and sparks real conversations about the sort of community we want to be. That’s maybe the best thing that could happen. And if it does – the cost-

benefit ratio is priceless.

Arguments about runaway council spending don’t add up.

A week earlier we ran a story about the council progressing plans to spend up to $44 million on a library. The number of comments on that piece paled in comparison.

We elect councils to make decisions. Those decisions are about infrastrucure, and roads and libraries but they are also about community wellbeing.

Speak to anyone from the LGBTQ community about whether the pride crossing will add to their sense of community wellbeing and the answer will be ‘yes’. And that’s important because they are part of Nelson and they seldom, if ever, have had any money budgeted towards anything that might benefit their sense of place here.

As Rohan suggested in responses to some of these comments, it doesnt have to be the crossing OR something else. It can be both.

They should be sorting the pipes and the roads and housing AND the “small quick wins”.

The pride crossing can be a small quick win, for minimal relative budget, for a potentially very big upside.

For me, it’s a no brainer. What is less clear is whether I should put this on Facebook.

A unique partnership between Placemakers and Nelson Police will help tradies protect their tools from theft.

Police will be attending the annual Placemakers Monster Tool Sale breakfast at Placemakers later this month and will be offering free engraving for any tradies’ tools.

Police area prevention manager senior sergeant Hamish Chapman says tool theft has always been an issue and often police struggle to reunite tools with their owners.

“We will do a search warrant and we find tools that we know don’t belong there, often nobody comes forward to claim them. But if they have a unique identifier on them, we can start to return the items to their rightful owners.”

He says the March 31 breakfast will be a chance to educate tradies on

site safety and security of their gear.

“A big thing is often they will go off site for a quick trip down to Placemakers, for example, and you just don’t know who is out going for a walk around.

“More often than not, someone will get a window of opportunity and think ‘there’s some good tools, I can flick them off easily’.”

Placemakers Nelson Marlborough hub operations manager Matthew Hansen says the inititive is about encouraging their customers to keep records of their purchases.

“These guys could be looking at thousands of dollars to replace their gear if it’s been a bad hit, some of the big ticket items are up to $2000 to replace.

“We just want to encourage them to take photos of their tools, keep receipts or a catalogue, there may not be much engraving done on the day but we want to reinforce that they need to take the necessary steps to protect their gear.”

Sanford to forfeit $20m vessel Nelson-based commercial fishing company Sanford Limited has been ordered to forfeit a $20 million vessel, and fined $36,000 for bottom trawling in a restricted area.

Sanford was convicted on three representative charges relating to fishing in the Puysegur Benthic Protection Area, west of Stewart Island.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) found the vessel – the San Waitaki – to have illegally bottom trawled in the Puysegur Benthic Protection Area while targeting orange roughy during fishing trips in 2017 and 2018.

Proceeds from the sale of fish taken in the Puysegur Benthic Protection Area in 2018 – amounting to $150,720 – were also forfeited as well as fishing equipment valued at $5,280.

In addition, vessel master Grant Clifford Walker, 51, was convicted on two representative charges and fined $11,250, and first mate William Dessiou Lash, 46, was convicted on one representative charge and fined $5,400.

Walker was found to be in control of the vessel during eight trawls and Lash was in control of the vessel during four trawls.

Benthic Protection Areas, which are susceptible to damage by bottom trawling activities, are closed to protect marine biological life.

Sanford's offending in 2018 came to light as a result of MPI's electronic monitoring system, which tracks the location of a commercial fishing fleet in near real time.

MPI is alerted when vessels enter areas that are restricted or prohibited.

Tessa’s five-hour wait after injury Jonty Dine Reporter

It was deep into the fourth quarter of her social netball game when Tessa Dudley heard a distinct pop.

She collapsed to the court in agony as play came to an abrupt halt.

Tessa had badly sprained her hamstring and anterior cruciate ligament.

“I went to catch the ball and twisted sideways and felt something at the top of my hamstring pop, it felt like my knee was getting ripped off.”

Lying prone on the concrete, Tessa took comfort in the news that an ambulance had been called.

“I knew I wouldn’t be in pain too much longer.”

However, 40 minutes went by before Tessa was told she would need to make her own way to the

“It was really painful and frustrating as I could have been waiting at the hospital that whole time and gotten in sooner.”

With the injury occurring just before 8pm, Tessa was finally seen at 1am and wasn’t home until after 3am.

“Obviously my very sore leg wasn’t important.”

The 15-year-old will be on crutches for the next two weeks and is set to miss her school’s netball trials.

She is now questioning the lack of medical care that was available to her at Saxton Field.

“I expected, as there were hundreds of people, that there would be an ambulance or at least a paramedic who knows what they’re doing and has the right gear.”

Twilight Netball is run on Tuesday evenings for players of all ages and abilities.

Tessa says, as many of these players are not athletes, the risk of injury is high.

“You never know when it’s going to happen, and I don’t want someone else to go through what I did.”

Nelson Netball Centre manager Leigh Gibbs says, ideally, they would have ambulances stationed at the courts during social netball, however, funding prevents this.

“It is something we have been investigating, unfortunately it is a financial issue, and the costs would be passed onto the participants.”

Nelson Institute pushes for attendees The Nelson Institute is pushing for more people to attend its monthly talks this year.

The first talk for this year is on March 7 and will be about the electoral forum with guest speaker Nick Smith. In the months ahead there will be talks on satellites, ‘man of stone’, radiation and reason and

novel foods from ancient crops.

There will also be talks from students from Nelson College and Daniel Wilson, principal of Nayland College. The talks are held on Sunday afternoons at 2pm at the Elma Turner Library.

The objects of the institute are to aid and promote public education and moral and

intellectual improvement. The Nelson Literary and Scientific Institute was founded on the Whitby en route to the new colony of New Zealand in May 1841.

It was also the foundation of Nelson's first library with the institute’s first reading room opened in Upper Trafalgar Street in 1842.

A St John spokesperson says an ambulance will always be sent if the situation is life threatening, but in Tessa’s situation, it was not.

“Unfortunately, given resourcing we can’t attend every event.”

He says St John are contracted to events, however, many opt for a third-party provider.

Sanctuary volunteer giving back to his ‘happy place’ Kate Russell Reporter

For Peter Jamiseson, The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary is his “happy place”.

The trapping volunteer has spent the past 13 years helping to re-create a historic piece of New Zealand, right here in Nelson.

“I find it incredibly rewarding.

We have wonderful volunteers that have been here for a long time.”

In fact, Peter is just one of 300 volunteers at the sanctuary.

The 69-year-old says it was his love for the bush and tramping that led him to sign up in 2008.

“I’d just moved to Nelson and my life had settled down a bit after living in Auckland for 15 years. I had some time that I wanted to devote as a volunteer.

“I met someone that was involved with the sanctuary and I came up here, and it’s now very much my happy place. I’ve always been a keen tramper,

and this is 700 hectares of amazing countryside that you can get quite immersed in.”

Peter now organises 80 volunteers, who are involved in monitoring traps all over the sanctuary.

Peter also spent time as a trustee for several years.

“But I decided to go back to volunteering again. It has been great getting back into the field.”

Peter says one of the most rewarding things about volunteering at the sanctuary is knowing that he is “setting something up” for the next generation.

“I won’t get the benefit of what we’re creating here, but hopefully the next generation will have something that is what New Zealand bush used to be like. The thing that I’m seriously excited about is the bird population, which has just exploded.”

But there are many other perks too, he says.

“The people are fantastic. There

are some here in their 80s and they are up here every week.

Some of them are far fitter than I am, too.”

Collectively, about 20,000 volunteer hours per year are being invested into the sanctuary, according to chief executive, Ru Collin.

“The range of volunteer activity stretches across the whole operation."

Waimea Dam cost blows out again Jacqui Rawson The Waimea dam project has blown out a further $29 million as contractors deal with the fallout from Covid-19 and “geological curve balls”.

The total cost of the dam now sits at $158.4m - more than double the estimate of $75.9m that went out for public consultation in 2017.

Waimea Water CEO Mike Scott presented his six monthly update last week saying that “geological curve balls have been thrown at us that needed to be addressed and have led to part of the cost increase”.

Waimea Water is a councilcontrolled organisation responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the dam, which says will secure the region’s water supply for the next 100 years.

Mike says that, besides the challenges, there has been excellent progress in the last six months.

The dam was 50 per cent complete with the embankment now coming up out of the ground and the rock wall was now 7 metres high. More importantly, he says there have been no injuries.

“And we’ve pretty much completed the mechanical and electrical design

that wasn’t designed at the time of funding,” says Mike.

The Covid-19 costs of $11.2m include a provisional allowance for future costs that Mike says they are beginning to see emerge, particularly around the supply chain and bringing equipment in from overseas.

Tasman mayor Tim King says the council expected an increase, particularly in light of Covid-19 and knew there were challenges although not the scale of them.

The council, in their long-term plan meeting last week agreed to raise funds for the shortfall of $21m which, if agreed, could have an impact on Tasman district ratepayers of a 0.1 per cent increase.

“The project on the ground is progressing really, really well and the challenges we are facing at the higher level shouldn’t detract from the pride the hundreds of members of our community that work out on the dam every day should feel,” says Tim. Nelson City Council has funded the project $5 million in return for a take of up to 22,000m3/day of water from TDC, and allow the council to convert the $5 million to shares if desired.

The Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) and Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP) are currently open for public submissions.

The plans detail the investment council proposes to make to create a sustainable transport network throughout the Nelson Tasman region. They also outline how we intend to respond to the needs of a growing population, and improvements related to road safety.

Proposals for 2023 include low-cost urban flat fares, a simplified route network to operate 7am-7pm, 7 days a week, low emission buses, a regional commuter service from Motueka to Richmond, connecting on to Nelson, and an on demand local Stoke service.

For 2026, it expands to including buses every 30 minutes on urban routes between 7am-7pm, 7 days a week, and a park and ride facility in Richmond.

Consultation closes on Wednesday 17 March, and public hearings are scheduled for early April.

Triumphant car Rachel show at Trafalgar Boyack MP for Nelson

Charles Anderson Dave North still remembers sitting in the back of his dad’s 1959 Triumph on beautiful summer days in the UK. But when he went back home in 2000, he found it sitting in a garage gathering dust.

“So, I tidied it up and drove it around the UK for a couple of years. Then when I moved to Nelson, I shipped it back over here.”

The story goes that when his father first bought it in 1965 it was a British racing green.

“But my mum took one look at it and said, ‘I don’t like the colour’.”

So, for 50 years it has been various shades of blue.

Dave’s car was one of 84 Triumphs that arrived at the Trafalgar Centre grass over the weekend to take part in the TR Register of New Zealand’s local showing. It saw 155 people come to the region from as far away as Kerikeri in the north and Arrowtown in the south.

Local chapter organiser Bill Rogers says it’s the largest turnout for the club ever in the country.

“We don’t know why. Whether it was just really well organised or just us being small and people wanting to support us."

Bill says there isn’t anything special about Triumphs other than just being a really nice classic car.

The attendees had several events over the weekend, ending in a tour down to Westport, across to Hanmer and then to Kaikoura before ending up back in Nelson.

“They are a great mob,” says Bill.

“There were a few breakdowns on the way, so people rallied around them and organised repairs.”

There are about half a dozen members in Nelson and Dave says the car is perfect for the region.

He drives it most days on his way to work and also takes it out on the weekends.

It’s a nostalgic thing to have in the family, he says. When he had his own kids they also enjoyed sitting in the back while whizzing through the streets.

“And now my son has his license, he likes driving it too.”

Being an employed tradesman (working for the same company for more than 10 years) it’s been over two years since my last salary increase. I love that Nelson is such a safe place. We have for years had one of New Zealand’s lowest crime rates. My worry is the recent growth of gangs and the escalation in violence and drug crime.

My strong concern is that a merger would create a huge lack of transparency in a joint organisation and provide a great opportunity for both senior managers and our councils to ‘hide’ poor decisions and avoid accountability. Furthermore, the direct cost to

The action for this weekend’s New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show at Lake Rotoiti will be concentrated on Sunday March 7, if there is a shift to Covid-19 Level 1 by then, as currently predicted.

Organiser Pete Rainey says at this stage the intention is to run a full day of activities on the Sunday.

“We’ll be able to have displays on land in the morning and activities on the water in the afternoon as usual, if the alert levels are dropped to Level 1 at 6am on Sunday morning as is the current plan announced by the Prime Minister,” he says.

“While we won’t be organising any activities on Saturday, people who have planned to come to Rotoiti will be able to launch their boats and enjoy the lake – they’ll be doing this as members of the public and we remind them Covid Alert Level 2 restrictions, including social distancing, will apply.”

The dinner and prize-giving

A reminder that dogs are not allowed in the National Park, and a warning not to wear blue as it attracts the bumblebees which are copious at this time of year. If the Covid-19 alert level drops to Level 1 before Saturday the boat show will run across both days as usual.

After having to postpone their annual show twice due to Covid-19, the Nelson Gang Show was able to finally perform last week, just in the nick of time before Level 2.

Organiser Bridget Smith says last week’s shows - running from February 25-27 at Nelson’s Theatre Royal, went off without a hitch.

“It was in the second to last song of our final performance that

the alert that we would be going into Level 2 at midnight came through. We were so pleased and relieved to have gotten to perform,” she says.

The scout-led gang show was originally set for July last year, however, Covid-19 and alert levels caused the show to be postponed until September.

Then it happened again, delaying the show until late February.

Tāhunanui’s rich and sandy history More than 600 years ago, Māori nestled their camps in the sand-dunes near the junction of Bisley Avenue and Rocks Rd. There, they harvested kaimoana from the coast and the deeper waters of the bay.

The area was originally named ‘Suburban South’ by early European settlers who weren’t enthusiastic about swimming or lazing on the beach. It wasn’t until the opening of the convictbuilt Rocks Rd in 1899, that they started accessing the area.

By then it was called ‘The Sands’.

In 1903, when the first flat sections were offered for sale, a competition to name the area gathered 442 suggestions from citizens possibly hoping to win the one guinea prize money.

The Māori name Tahuna was selected, meaning ‘sea beach' or ‘sand hill'. However, this created a problem, because Morrinsville already had a post office called Tahuna. They suggested Tatahi, which is a location word for seaside, or riverside. That was used until 1908 but it proved unpopular. Finally, Tāhunanui (nui meaning big or abundant) was coined, becoming the official name in 1911.

Tāhunanui became Nelson’s seaside playground. Major housing developments appeared on the hillside from the 1920s.

A town board governed the thriving community, and they even had their own town hall which is currently home of Aikido Karate. The town hall hosted all kinds of events and activities until the suburb became part of Nelson city in 1950, ending 30 years of selfgovernment.

The land was vested in the Nelson City Council, however, early on an active group had formed to administer the beach area – the Tahuna Sands Association. They created facilities for the community, such as the corrugated iron changing shed, canteen and toilets, swings, slides and merry-go rounds for children.

By the end of the 1930s, more than 1000 visitors were staying at the motor camp that had been established by the association.

Nelson Jaycee gained approval to create a petting zoo called ‘Natureland’ on part of Hounsell’s Circle in 1966. Tucked into a small alcove in the hedge on the seaside of Natureland, you’ll find a brass sundial, part of the original bequest.

The Latin inscription ‘Non Numero Horas Nisi Serenas’ - meaning ‘I count only the sunny hours’.

An area levelled for a wartime antiaircraft gun battery, was leased out for a ‘Dine and Dance’ in the 1940s.

But when this business closed, the buildings were transported to Beach Rd and converted into motels, while the concrete floor was turned into an outdoor skating rink. Between 19491977, no summer was complete without motor-racing on the back beach, with spectators perched on the surrounding sandhills.

Many older residents will remember enjoying outdoor concerts on the

tennis courts: The Great Benyon’s magic shows, ‘Big Digs’ with grand prizes, rides on the Modellers Pond in The Navy Lark paddle boat, Mr and Miss Tahuna pageants and the annual Beachcombers’ Ball in front of the Surf Club in the 1950s and 60s.

In 2019, the Geographic Board added a macron or small line above a single vowel to indicate it should be emphasised. It turns out, without a macron, it means nothing in te reo Māori.

Boxing Day hailstorm bill hits $41m Sara Hollyman Reporter

Insurance claims from the freak hailstorm that hit the region on Boxing Day last year have reached $41 million.

More than 1000 claims have been lodged over the weather event that saw some orchards lose their entire crop.

Provisional figures released by the Insurance Council of NZ show that 1043 claims have so far

been lodged, totalling more than $40 million.

The claims include 425 house and contents claims ($1.8m), 125 commercial and business claims ($18.7m), 432 claims for crops and other ($20m), 59 motor claims ($146,000) and two marine claims ($3000).

ICNZ chief executive Tim Grafton says sudden and unexpected extreme weather can leave widespread losses for individuals and their communities in its wake.

"It is sobering to think of the numerous orchards in the region that may not have had insurance in place - with the true cost of the event realistically much larger than reflected by our figures."

Insurance support for communities around the country hit by extreme weather events has hit a new annual record of $248m, with insurance customers making more than 13,600 weather related claims for the twelve months to December 2020.

Tim says that due to the impacts

of climate change we can expect extreme weather events to become even more frequent, with more droughts and more flood events.

"Sadly, the impacts of climate change are very real for all New Zealanders. Insurance plays a vital role to support our communities to manage these risks and it has never been more important to insure adequately for unexpected events.

"Conversely, we must adapt to our changing climate and take

steps to reduce risks where possible, building more resilient communities."

He says this could mean improving infrastructure such as stormwater systems, not consenting new properties in higher risk areas, as well as building more resilient residential and commercial buildings.

"The sooner we adapt the less adaptation will cost us and the less we will be impacted by the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather."

Whale stranding at Farewell Spit

It was a dark time in Golden Bay last week with dozens of pilot whales beaching themselves at Farewell Spit. The whales were first brought to the attention of DOC on February 22 with a pod of 49 stranding themselves. Despite the tireless efforts of rescue workers, 21 of the longfinned pilot whales died. Around 65 staff trained medics, volunteers, DOC staff and members of Project Jonah successfully re-floated 38 of the 49 whales at the evening high tide on Monday. The following morning however, another 29 whales were discovered re-stranded, eight of which died. Department of Conservation spokesperson Trish Grant says it has a been full on week for the team and volunteers working with the whales.

The countdown to Havelock Mussel Festival is on The wait is nearly over - the Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival is returning to Marlborough for its seventeenth year this month!

Basketball: The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have inked another three local players as they continue to round out their roster ahead of the 2021 Sal’s NBL season. Tysxun Aiolupotea, Riley Bensemann and Nic Trathen will all don the Giants’ navy blue once again. The Giants roster now sits at eight players, including five players born and raised in Nelson, a sixth who has played 13 seasons for the club and two imports.

Festival organiser Murray Cameron says there was top tier racing across all grades at the velodrome and criterium.

“The numbers were up on last year and it was a great group of riders."

Also among the riders was paracyclist icon Brian Jacobsen.

Brian has suffered a brain aneurysm, stroke and numerous heart-related issues over the last 25 years.

The 73-year-old from Pohara will also attend the New Zealand Championships.

Football: FC Nelson has taken another step towards strengthening grassroots football in the region with the club establishing a new relationship with Nelson College for Girls. FC Nelson has confirmed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the football club and NCG. The agreement is similar in format to the MOU signed between FC Nelson and Nelson College before Christmas but also offers a somewhat different pathway.

Zohrab twins a cut above Jonty Dine Reporter

David and Thomas Zohrab were born just a minute apart and little has separated them ever since.

The 20-year-old twins have spent every Saturday in summer playing cricket together since they were seven.

Countless hours in the nets and in their garage has seen them become two of the most promising young cricketers in the region.

It has been 14 years since a set of identical twins played for the Black Caps.

The Zohrabs say they are both incredibly competitive.

“Whether in the garage, out for a run or on the golf course, you always have to come out on top,” says Thomas.

David says, despite the sibling rivalry, they are both very supportive of each other’s achievements.

The Zohrabs say they thrive when batting together, with their mutual game understanding highly in-sync.

“We have had a few mix ups but generally we are pretty good on that quick single,” says Thomas.

The boys also share very similar personalities.

“Dave will say I’m a bit more outlandish than him.”

The brothers are currently living in separate parts of the country with David studying law and commerce at Victoria while Thomas is at the University of Canterbury doing law and criminal justice.

The pair admit they are very close and that it took some getting used to living apart.

“When we come back over summer, we reconnect but it’s good to have our time away, I

guess,” says David.

Their first stop when arriving back home is the golf course, followed soon after by a session of garage cricket.

“We have a good garage cricket set up and have had a few battles in there since we were young, we will go spend up to an hour in there.”

After leaving Nelson College, success followed the boys into club and provincial level.

Thomas, an opening batsman and medium pace bowler and David, a middle order off spinner, would feature prominently in two separate Hawke Cup victories for Nelson as well as back-to-back Tasman Premier League titles.

After Thomas almost single handedly won the 2020 TPL title with his stunning spell of 5/19, he would back that up this season with another dominant display.

At 10/2 in the final against Stoke/Nayland, he says he saw that someone had to stand up and try to take the game on.

“It is such a cliché, but you do step up a gear with so much riding on it. I think I play my best when the game really means something.”

Thomas and David would combine for a 92-run third wicket partnership, each scoring half centuries in the six-wicket win.

The twins were just as influential with the ball, Thomas taking 2/12 off ten while David claimed 1/18.

David says the win was the result of the team environment.

“It was an awesome season with a great bunch of guys.”

He says there were eight or so players around their age which translated to being good mates on and off the pitch.

“A lot of us had played through Nelson College and having BJ (Barnett) and Ollie (JonesAllen) involved really brought the group together.”

Thomas says it is a side that enjoys time off the park just as much.

“We will always have a beer together on Saturday night.”

The Zohrabs say they will be back next year to chase a threepeat with higher honours the long-term goal.

“You have to strive for the ultimate which is playing for the Black Caps and doing it together would be awesome.”
